Avatar - Breathtakingly Beautiful
When movies are created, they are done so with intent. Different genres of film target specific audiences, a formula which has sustained Hollywood and it's industries since the beginning of the blockbuster movies. When a movie is created in a manner that sets in motion any given goal, said films success is pendant on whether or not that goal is reached. If a comedy creates laughter, or if a romance produces tears, then they are successes in their own right. So when a massively ambitious, seemingly impossible to create film aiming to usher in a new era manages to grab hold of it's audience and take them on an unprecedented cinematic roller coaster ride that delivers the goods every turn of the way, it can be considered successful. Avatar is that success.

A work in progress that spanned a decade and a half, Avatar is more than just a film - it's an experience, an event. When James Cameron set out to make this movie back in the mid 90's, he realized that his ambitions were simply too far ahead of their time. His ideas could not be reached in a feasible manner, and due to this, he had to wait. Or create. Once informed that the image he held for this film was one that was out of grasp, he began working on the technology that would bring his masterpiece within reach. Fifteen years and nearly half a billion dollars later, James Cameron has brought that vision to the screen, and has done so in an extravagant and showstopping way.

Avatar tells the tale of a war between species, each fighting for the ultimate survival of their race. Desperate to find the fuel for their dying planet, human soldiers and scientists set out from earth and set course for Pandora. A planet connected by all living things, Pandora is home to an indigenous species known as the Na'vi, as well as the precious element Unobtanium needed to save earth. Using transference technology, paralyzed marine Jake Sully is volunteered for the "Avatar Program", which enables the thoughts and mind of a human to be placed within the shell of a tube-born Na'vi body. Using this as technique to their advantage, Jake is sent into the harsh Jungles of Pandora in order to bond with the natives, thus gaining knowledge and insight on their ways. Having originally planned to use this knowledge as a means of negotiating the natives relocation, so that the humans can access the deposit of Unobtainium - which just happens to sit below their most worshiped and valued pseudo-deity of their planet.

While the plot on paper may read as a standard shoot'em-up action sci-fi flick, it is a near inconceivable task to truly explain how incorrect this appearance truly is. This takes a stroke from every movie, and a dab from every genre, and manages to create a portrait of beauty, in which all pre-existing notion of what cinema can and cannot do is destroyed. Within the lengthy hundred and sixty some odd minutes of film, moviegoers will find that there is always something to keep them enthralled, a merciful gift when considering how tedious many of the longer film of recent memory can become.

No matter what can be said about the overtly cheesy script,a criticism that, while holding true, manages to fit charmingly into the over-the-top nature of the film, Avatar does as it set out to do, bringing moviegoers a cinematic experience rather than a film. Relying on the technology that he created, Cameron pours his heart into this movie, and it shows in every scene. Ranging from the absurdly detailed creatures to all-too-realistic planet, this flick manages to tell a fulfilling story while all the while throwing jaw-dropping scenery at the audience, giving them only enough time to recover before bombarding them with yet another breathtaking shot.

Be it the fantastical and charming love story told between the native and the outsider, or the too-real-to-be-true action scenes between gunships and foreign ferals, Avatar is what Star Wars was too the 70's, the Wizard Of Oz of the 40's - a masterpiece that will go down in movie history as a game changer of it's time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Avatar captures all realms of the human indulgence. It is the perfect form of hero story as well as having a positive message about saving the environment. The movie is extremely creative and imagined. We are presented with a new language called the Na'vi, a new goddess named Eywa who is presumed one with nature, and new fundamental lifeforms that engulf your imagination. The idea of the human controlled Avatars is something unprecedented. It makes the movie fun and at the same time plausible because the world of Pandora is so substantial and inhumane, that mankind is forced to create organic bodies that can not only survive but explore the land efficiently. The Avatars are controlled by people with similar DNA from a tranced state that allows them to connect into the body. The plot of the movie is also one that is imaginable yet realistic. In the year 2154, U.S. armed forces embark on a journey to an earth-like planet called Pandora. On Pandora there is an element called Unobtainium that is extremely valuable. When humans discover that there is a substantial amount of Unobtainium under a large tree called "Home Tree", where the natives live action needs to be taken. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) gets lost on a botanist mission and ends up at Home Tree, and the only reason he wasn't killed is because Eywa showed the natives a "sign" not to kill him. Since Jake is able to join and train as a native, the humans want him to convince the natives to leave their tree, in able to attain the unobtainium. Jake learns in conclusion that there is nothing the natives want and refuse to move from their home, therefore humans take force and destroy their home. The Na'vi are not advanced people, they live among nature and are smart with which creatures they interact with. Because Jake learns the importance of being a Na'vi he begins to choose sides and understands what is morally right. Dilemmas arise due to the natives not trusting Jake for his betrayal-like actions, and humans don't because he refuses to help the humans fight the natives. What will turn out for Jake and where will the Na'vi people go? This movie is an action packed thriller with imaginative fun and fight distributed throughout the film. We are introduced to many creatures including the Ikran (a huge flying bird-like creature), and the pa'li (a large horse-like creature). These animals play a significant role in the movie's structure by adding awe inspiring moments and serenity. The film never feels long and concludes with the ultimate warfare that has a special element that comes as a true surprise Expand

I was really blown away with this film. Hands down the best 3D movie I have seen. You could argue that the plot is the same as Dances with Wolves or even Fern gully except with blue aliens, but I don't care. This movie is absolutely wonderful.

It does almost everything. The one thing it doesn't have is much humor. But Great acting, great action, great visual/special effects, great 3d if you saw it in theaters, great music, it presents you a whole new world to learn about, it has a moral message; not a super deep or revolutionary one, but actionable and practical, and that's more than most movies can say.

P.S. Great concept for 2009, Avatars look like Lord Shiva (Hindu god of Destruction) who has many avatars which he uses to destroy and defeat evil on the planet. But in the movie, Humans transfer their conscience and soul to Navi.

I am usually a pretty good judge of movies from their trailers but the trailer for Avatar is filled with some of the more cliched elements. The CGI effects are marvelous and the realization of the world of Pandora is very detailed and persuasive. Having read cynical accounts of the plot as "Dances with Smurfs" I was also surprised by the story which was not exactly the strength of the movie but also didn't detract too much from the movie going experience. I feel a little sorry for people who become deeply attached to this movie and wrapped up in its reality...but on the other hand, I might even consider going to the movie again in the IMAX version. I applaud the creators and all who put this film together as it is a masterpiece of cinema. Yes, there are some cliches that can be traced back to stuff done in other films, but seriously - what "hasn't" been done before ? Yes, there was the age old cowboys/indians type of conflict - but it is still relevant and definitely part of our human nature - so it is absolutely valid as a plot. And, some on here said the acting was terrible, and that there was no character development - I can't understand those comments - as this film had just the right blend of development that was needed to tell the story. One last comment - Zoe Saldana is hot as Uhura and also as a NaVi - I'd do them both. Expand

This movie will remain in my memory for a long time. (The fact that I wouldn't mind watching this on a regular basis would help keep it fresh in my memory). I have seen this movie twice, the first time being in 2D. I traveled 45 minutes in bad snow to see it in 3D, but was ultimately disappointed. Not due to the movie but the fact that the 3D did not enhance the movie as much as I would have liked. This could be because I didn't drive the extra miles to an IMAX theater. I really don't think that 3D is needed to express the new world that Cameron creates. Even in 2D, I was amazed by the new scenery and visual artistry that was presented. I thought that all actors/actresses in the movie offered solid performances. However, at times Sam Worthington (Jake Sully) was a little hard to understand in his dialogue. As for plot, the movie gives everyone something to enjoy and follow along with. The plot is well developed and even gives the action junkies something to look at with the final battle scene. Even I was enthralled with the elements of romance that were presented. As I put it to a friend, "There is a great plot, great action, and a sprinkling of romance." In conclusion, I feel that it would be likened to a felony to not see this movie. James Cameron creates a beautiful new world as well as a beautiful well-developed plot. This movie deserves the cost of a movie theater ticket, no matter how expensive it is. Expand

Avatar First of all I would like to say that I have never reviewed a movie on here before but am sick and tired of people thinking that a movie rating is based on how much you can insult a movie or how clever you can make yourself sound. Avatar itself is the first movie that I have ever seen that totally dragged me in. No the story wasnt anything brand new but it certainly is not boring or old. The graphics were groundbreaking and quite often breathtaking but that wasnt overshadowed by a rubbish story. The characters sometimes seemed a little typical but a fantastic performance by Sigourny Weaver at least added one major lead acting role. It's basically the story of pocahontas, in a fight for their land love story. Though incredible battle scenes and great suspense gets your eyes glued to the screen. I was on the edge of my seat. I just finished watching Avatar in boring old 2D. I expected that without the gimmicky glasses the film would lose most of what people are raving about (see Beowulf) but darned if that wasn't an awesome film. I saw Titanic in '97 I just finished watching Avatar in boring old 2D. I expected that without the gimmicky glasses the film would lose most of what people are raving about (see Beowulf) but darned if that wasn't an awesome film. I saw Titanic in '97 and though the visuals were incredible, probably the best until Avatar, I felt that the story was too hackneyed to ignore just for the sake of special effects. Avatar has come in for some of the same criticism from some viewers, but though there isn't anything really new in this plot, it's surprisingly well written, at least for a big budget action film. But of course the story only needed to not be annoying, because the real reason everyone is going to see this film is the visuals, which even in plain old 2D are enough to make Lucas's last three space operas look like something out of Ed Wood's filmography. Only Lord of the Rings has come close to creating an entire world with this level of detail, and some of the same folks are on board for this film. But they have really outdone themselves. The only negative reviews I've seen from non-critics have been from conservatives who are offended by a movie that says we shouldn't rape and pillage native peoples and pristine environments. I'm not sure that's really a defensible position, so no comment there :) Expand

Let's face it, a truly original idea is nearly impossible to find, so saying Avatar is not that original is not that big of a slam. Another possible flaw is the 3D. It works, as far the effect, but is paying an extra few dollars to see it, there is no sense it added that much to the movie. This dream that 3D will make you feel like you are in the movie is not a reality here. The reality is if you want to feel like you are in the movie is for a technology to be developed the uses virtual reality glasses that allow you to have 360 3D views. Bottom line, if you want to see a good action/sci-fi movie, this is a great choice. Just don't expect the ultimate movie. Expect to see an above average movie. So many at this point, that it is extremely rare that I experience any sense of awe or wonder at a film. "Avatar" stepped in and changed that for me in a tremendous way. If you're expecting a brand-new, never before seen tale, you've come to the wrong movie. The story and formula are tried and true, as both James Cameron and most other prominent directors in Hollywood well know. Where this movie steps out of that mold, is in the fantastic world that James and crew have created. The sea, land, sky, and life on display here are like nothing you've seen before, and yet, are so familiar that you slide right into the feel of the place like an old pair of jeans. As for story, learning, loving, betrayal, and redemption are all on display and used to competent effect. Where this movie really shines, however, is in three dimensions. I have yet to see a movie that uses the 3D so intelligently. Used here, 3D truly puts you inside the spaces of this film, and the experience is made all the better for it. As for the technology of the creatures, plants, and the blue-skinned, three-fingered Na'Vi, every one in Hollywood should sit up and take notice. There has been nothing yet to compare with the realism of everything on display. Gollum was long the benchmark by which CG performances were measured, but in my world, this is no longer the case. The Na'Vi, in terms of movement and emotion, are the most convincing creation ever to come out of a silicon chip. When they smile, you believe it. When they cry, you feel their pain. I stand up and salute James Cameron and all the brilliant computer artists who came together with technology to create an utterly believable world, along with the plants, animals and people who inhabit it. Coming back down to earth, I must say this will not go down as the greatest movie ever made. It has it's flaws. If you've seen a James Cameron film before, you probably know what to expect in terms of story, and I can't say that this will "change the way" we watch movies forever. What I can say is this. For the sheer experience of it, for the spectacle, for the awe and wonder, this is the best film on the big screen today. Expand

This movie was so great, only a few things were missing, which stopped me from giving it a 10. First thing is that at parts the movie felt slow paced, most parts the pace was perfect but a few parts here and there the pace was a bit slow. Also, I came and watched this movie not just to enjoy myself but also get educated about the world that Cameroon has created, but I was disappointed that I did not learn anything about the world, everything was just shown to you, you were never told any fascinating information, like why is there such a big tree sticking out of the ground+why do many of the Navi tribes live in it (maybe it is just a really large tree and its a rare species and the navi prefer living in it because it offers protection, but nor all Navis live in it because they are rare trees and not ever tribe can find one, or the answer could be more complicated than that), why are those mountains floating, why have certain creatures adapted in certain ways, why are the Navis so similar to humans, etc. Another problem was that there were really 2 events in the whole movie, the main character learning the ways of Navi and a big battle. The battle took up about 15-20% of the movie, while learning took up over 65% of the movie, while another 15+% of the movie was taken up by other things. Every single part that felt slow paced was in the learning section, they could have cut this down to a little over half of what it actually was and it would have made the movies pace perfect and they could have spent the extra time to explain the movie. Now there are few movies out there that can explain a whole universe in a single movie, a few examples are Lord of the Rings and Matrix (even though these 2 movies explained a lot of the universe in sequels most of it was explained in the original movie). I expected Cameroon to be able to do this since he is such a great director and the movie was so damn long but I was disappointed. But I am sure that the sequel (already in the talks) will explain the universe in detail to us which will make the first movie even more enjoyable to think about and watch. Thanks for reading. Expand

While James Cameron is a master in creating a fantasy world on screen, the only reason I could not give this movie a 10 is because of what another critic had said regarding dialogue and screenplay. He has definitely raised the bar when it comes to CGI. I just got done watching it for the second time (once in 3-D, once in 2-D) and it is marvelous. I've heard some women thinking that it's going to be to "sci-fi" and that is not the case. This is truly a love story and while Peter Jackson had better material to work with when it came to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Cameron is up there with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg when it comes to creating a movie that never gets boring and always has a message bigger than the movie itself. Special effects were amazing. -1 for the soundtrack fail. It just needed a better soundtrack - they clearly know not to use the soundtrack from the lion king for the trailer.
