Obviously an awesome production all around, story, writing (a bit cliched though), direction, fx, etc. But somehow I kept thinking, "I'm watching a super-slick Saturday morning cartoon." That kinda ruins the moment.

I really enjoyed watching Avatar, it was kind of like spending a couple of hours at Disneyland, it was light fun. I would have given it a higher rating but the story was really weak, and it was a bit too heavy on the tree-hugging aspect I really enjoyed watching Avatar, it was kind of like spending a couple of hours at Disneyland, it was light fun. I would have given it a higher rating but the story was really weak, and it was a bit too heavy on the tree-hugging aspect (Capitalism, man, & the military are evil and nature and the environment are to be untouched). I'm sure all the climate-change (formally global warming) nuts will give this movie a 10, and thats ok, It's visuals and action alone did not merit a 10 for me. There was never any explanation why the material in "Pandora" was so important to the military other than it was worth alot of money so the core of the story was never explained. The action and visuals were great, I really liked all of the action sequence's, stunning special effects, and creativity of the "Pandora" world. The movie was a bit long and the plot as I mentioned was pretty lame, it had alot of similarity to something like Bravehart. I saw the movie in 3D and it was good, however, after the first 30 minutes I did not even notice the 3D anymore so I would imagine that it would be just as good without the 3D. I would reccomend this movie for the visuals and action, if you are an anti-capiltalist or environmentalist you will absolutely love this movie for its tree-hugging message! Expand

Great effects, meticulous mythology. Ultimately a pat and unoriginal story. Like Dances with Wolves meets Terminator.

The most impressive part of this movie was the world of Pandora and the cgi visuals. The story was very shallow without ever really explaining what was so great about the special mineral found in Pandora other than it was worth alot of $$ to the government/military. The not suprising Hollywood message is preached throughout Man=evil nature=good, which is kinda funny because they are all laughing their way to the bank (already grossed over 1 billion!) using our capitalist way of life that they dislike so much. On the good side, if you are a greenie type you will want to hug a tree after leaving the theater! Expand

I thought it was decent...definitely overrated. It had impressive CGI but a crappy script. I am really surprised by all the attention it is getting. Not terrible, but not the best of the year either.

All I needed to see was Avatar!!, you know those little blue ppl, Thats what got me interested in watching this in the 1st place. This movie started off extremely slow because of that. ofcourse, visually this was stunning but pretty much everything else is lacking. There wasn't enough focus for me, It had Its moments but It was inconsistent in a way. There was a lot that I just did not understand from the get go, heck, I still have questions. This was a bit of a disappointment, the acting was great but the story was generally weak. All in all this was pretty good, nothing great or genre defining though. Even with Its many short comings It was well worth the watch. Expand

I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, it's not a groundbreaking film, I don't think, and the 3D was distracting, fuzzy, and ineffective. The storyline could have been great, but instead was destroyed by a limp script (the "Kansas" lines was really not needed), an overweening self-importance, and clumsy themes that really do become offensive. Cameron may not have meant this, but the film too strenuously scorned everything that is uniquely human. He tried to make us weep when trees are knocked over, but cheer when Americans are blown up. The "noble savage" plot wears thin with such a treatment, and I wondered at how incurious the Na'vi seemed. No character was genuinely interesting, and despite the melodrama, there was little to no emotion invested in the story. By the big end battle I just didn't care who won or not -- although I DID care what cool stunts would be shown next. See? So, the overall experience is fun and sparkly, as long as you can ignore the weak, sometimes-offensive message. Expand

Then again, it as produced by the same person who done Titanic, which was a very good movie. This movie, however, can be reviewed just like a video game: good graphics, bad gameplay. First half of the movie is an ultimate bore-fest, having almost nothing close to canon (JC, why did you allow "unobtanium?") . Second half is where everything is taken up a few notches, giving some very good fight scenes and a Star Wars-esque battlefield. It's pure nostalgia for the whole movie, and I like that. However, the reason why I give it a 7 is the matter of why I watched it in 3d. 3d is a fad, through and through, and this movie proves it. Ironically, it was the human metals in the first half that made everything look like a fake motion blur. For some reason, I really couldn't watch the movie because of this, and, if I watched this in 2d, it MIGHT have been a good 7.3 movie. Actual rating: 6.5 (bonus points to second half of movie). Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi hottie performed upon this former marine is pure romantic pap, but "I see you" could have transcended its pedestrian connotations, had Jake's loyalties been more vacillating. A nice guy from the start, "Avatar" could have distinguished itself from "Dances with Wolves" comparisons by making Runs Like Manute Bol less compassionate and open-minded than the Kevin Costner character. Confined to a wheelchair, Jake's shoot to kill days are over, but that doesn't mean his warring mentality needed to be over too. The human infiltration into the Na'vi world needed just one benevolent presence(the scientist played by Sigourney Weaver), not two. After all, Jake is on a science-based detail, by default. If it wasn't for his accident, he'd be carrying a gun, and dancing with money. The tepid love story gains in power only if Neyriti was employed as the catalyst for Jake's transformation into a full-blooded Na'vi. But since he comes to Pandora without a shred of prejudicial feelings toward the planet's indigenous population, our protagonist has no character arc. Turning Na'vi-nese becomes inevitable, becomes ho-hum. It's probably the main reason why the story can't keep up with the special effects. The two sides, military and science, are too black and white, in terms of moralistic complexity. When Neyriti tells Jake that she sees him, the meaning is way too literal. (Jake is a human being.) "I see you" could have been issued as a challenge to be good, in the name of interspecies love. (For the record: "I see you" worked beautifully in Wayne Wang's "The Joy Luck Club"). Expand

The plot Built to be very similar to Pocahontas, basically a big social commentary about genocide and how stupid our militaries are. If a world such as this was found it would certainly be beaten, eaten, and exploited as in the movie. The plot isn't hackneyed, but it isn't very creative, leaving plenty of room for predictability, so it's hard to like when compared to Cameron's unpredictable masterpiece Titanic *applause sign*. Where the film actually falters is the bad guy. If every character who contains interest in killing the indigenous people was to have a MySpace/Facebook profile, it would contain a brief generic history written by some staff member along with an inspirational quote something along the lines of, "'Kill everything in your way in order to achieve fiscal benefit.' ~Adolf Hitler." Also, that quote is made up but I wouldn't put it past him. Expand

I mean great on a level that would have made this film iconic. Instead, it pandered and borrowed, and used every trick it could to distract us from the fact that the story has been told before. In fact, it was told recently in The Last Samurai, and less recently in Dances with Wolves. That is the films major flaw. There are minor ones as well. If ever there was a film that deserved a magnificent, soaring, original John Williams score that people would instantly recognize, this was it. Something along the lines of Star Wars, Superman, Raiders or Jaws. Instead we get an ignominious James Horner piece overflowing with his tiresome use of choirs and way too much borrowing from his previous scores. I can't imagine he is happy with this effort after creating FAR better music for films like Titanic, Braveheart, The Land Before Time, Willow, Aliens, Glory and probably his best work, Star Trek II. In my opinion, Hans Zimmer would have been the logical choice, considering the rip he's been on lately. At the very least, they should have given Alan Silvestri a shot. A few of the other minor flaws... Too many obvious plot devices (fog that prevents instruments from working, A tree that can conveniently transfer souls from useless human bodies to perfect alien bodies, etc) Too much overt storytelling. Can't you let the audience come to the conclusion that everything is "connected." Why did we have to have it explained to us? Some minor stupidity, like machine guns that can't hit much of anything. In fact, why couldn't they have simply used their gigantic bulldozer to destroy the tree at the end? Floating mountains? How? Anyway, I was entertained enough by the visuals to allow enough of these gripes to slip by without feeling the movie had been spoiled. It's just frustrating at how often films like this only need a little more oversight to avoid these painful flaws. Expand

The story Although this movie's visual effects are groundbreaking for its time, I felt that the story seemed to drag a bit. There are sequences in the film that are purposley inserted in order to wow audiences using special effects. The story could have took a different route and wowed audiences in that way, giving the audience a chance to connect with the characters more. Also, the dialogue became less entertaining as the film went on, especially for the Stephen Lang character. He says all of the trademark marine shoot 'em up phrases, that you eventually feel that the character would be so much more effective if he had better dialogue. Other than that, the film's visual effects are outstanding and will have a huge impact on the film industry in the years to follow as CG animation improves. Expand

Mining Corporation after deposits on alien planet, team are sent down to inhibit the planet in native form via Avatar program, things go wrong, man befriends tribe, learns their ways, fights the evil corporate machine.
Competent yet cliched sci-fi action fest which has plenty of thrills & spills over its 2 and a half hours.
The CGI is very well done, as are the action sequences with the big fight at the end the standout.
Where it does fall down is the awful dialogue, the ridiculous stereotypical militia & the story isn't exactly a new concept & pretty predictable.

The story and characters are unoriginal being recycled and two-dimensional. So a lot of whether or not you will enjoy this movie will depend on how much those to aspects matter. If you just want to see amazing visuals you’ll have a great time being blown away by this movie and forgetting for most/all of the movie how unoriginal the characters and story are. However, if characters and story matter a lot to you, you will be disappointed in this film as they are recycled from countless other films. For me I really enjoyed the visuals and they kept my interest throughout the film. The eh characters and story only took me out sometimes. It's kinda like a sleazy, but charismatic sales person. You like the person while your in his office, cause he just reeks of charm (or cigarettes) and you buy in to his pitch, cause he's good at what he does, but when you leave the store, you find that you really didn't like the product that much after all. That's kinda how I feel about Avatar. The movie's visuals are amazing and I would say that nothing will be defeating it anytime soon as far as that goes. But when you brush away all that, what you're left with isn't necessarily a bad movie, but an average to ok one. I say this because most of the time I spent watching it was marveling at the amazing visuals that Cameron's team presented us. That part I can't heap enough praise on, but other than that, the story of the movie pretty much comes across as a straight up black and white morality play. I can understand the "it's just a movie" that people may say to that kind of suggestion, but where it doesn't hold up is when you try to pass the movie off as a political/social statement about our society. Nothing in reality is ever black and white, and to do so discredits a lot of what makes us a very complicated, arrogant, and interesting species. Aside from it's horrid attempts to justify why our material world is wrong, the story presents the humans as evil, greedy, and violent; but the Na'vi are peaceful, harmonious, and coexist with nature. Of course the main character ends up going native, finds he likes the tribe more, and then sides with them in the upcoming inevitable bloodbath, and the usual sequence of most big budget movies plays out with no originality whatsoever. Still the movie does entertain, even though it provides a mixed message, and there are some very interesting moments. The real credit to Avatar is the level of thought put into the actual world itself, and here the production/design team did a remarkable job in making Pandora a reality. To me it's a shame that they went for a more simplified story of good and evil as opposed to something more complex and real, but I guess that was never their intention in the first place. It probably wouldn't have been as successful in the theatres if it was. A simple message doesn't mean a bad one, but in this case it was more of a typical one. Expand

The movie shows that colonialism leads to the destruction of nature due to excessive exploitation of the land, and further to suffering of the native people due to the accompanying displacement of them. Moreover, the movie supports a holistic world view, describing a harmonic interconnection between the indigenous people, flora and fauna. The natives live in harmony with animals and nature. At one point the War on Terror mentality is criticized, when the humans explain their attack as a means of protection from the "savages". Well, this is a 3D hyper-technological version of it, with very few differences between them. I'll be honest: this movie was good, but I knew the plot from the long run and, aside the flashy 3D graphics and the animation, it has nothing much to offer: it tries to impress with its scenery, character developement, alien backstory, enemy's reasoning and desperation and such, but in the end you'll hardly even hear any and just want to see an action scene! There's just nothing impressive at all in this movie: the main character is just uninteresting, the lover is just there, the enemy are the usual greedy people wanting to get their stuff and action is...good actually, and the scenery, while I admit it was well done, it just doesn't impress anymore: we had an overload of CG graphics already, and if they have to use it, use it so it doesn't bore us! We are tired of super-yet-fakey-realistic CGI graphics that are obviously fake: videogames could and actually did better than you did!!!
However, it's worth a watch anyway: it's a good movie to pass the time but, after that, you'll probably never seen it again.

As for the movie itself, I liked it for a lot of reasons but it wasn't the ground breaking experience it was made out to be from all the hype. My only real gripes are with the story. If the characters were at least somewhat memorable I could have given it a better score but... I don't know what it is but the vast majority of the characters just seem like actors on a set rather than real people. I've seen better character development in videogames from the 90s. The plot I thought was good but can't deny how similar it is to a number of other movies I've seen. Those things aside though I could find a lot of reasons to defend it too. I remember there was a lot of racial controversy surrounding the movie and I can't help but scratch my head at that. >_> Also the art direction is some of the best I've seen in a movie, I just wish all the cool bells and whistles were backed up by a better plot. I will say that it was probably among the most intriguing movies I saw in 2009. Expand

With orders to infiltrate the Na’vi, Jake finds himself falling in love with native girl, Neytiri, and complications soon ensue…

Cameron seamlessly melds live action, computer-generated animation and 3-D technology. The motion-capture technique that dazzled in Lord of the Rings reaches a new level of proficiency, enabling more nuance in facial expressions.

But for much of the movie, that hardly matters. The scenes in Pandora — a planet with an Earth-like environment — are so breathtaking that the narrative seems almost beside the point.

An epic battle to drive the Na'vi from their land tests Jake's allegiance. At nearly three hours, the movie grows sluggish, especially during the protracted battle scene.

Overrated but enjoyable.

Avatar!! A game? No. When people hear the word avatar, most would think of a game character but in this case, it brings a new meaning to the word avatar, literally. James Cameron not only the writer but also the director of the movie “Avatar”Avatar!! A game? No. When people hear the word avatar, most would think of a game character but in this case, it brings a new meaning to the word avatar, literally. James Cameron not only the writer but also the director of the movie “Avatar” (2009) has brought everyone’s dreams into reality by utilising the modern art of visual cinematography and 3-D imaging to blur the lines of virtual reality, making it more realistic. Cameron has also utilised certain star actors such as Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington who have won multiple awards in the past to play crucial roles in his film.

The movie being in the category of fantasy/science fiction, it begins in the future or more precise, year 2154 and one the many themes of the movie is protecting the environment.
Involving the military, they set off on a mission to collect, colonise and learn from the new planet, Pandora. Their main task for this operation is to collect a rich mineral that Earth desperately needs more of and they recently found that there was an abundant amount under their village.

Unobtanium, the mineral, they need to save their energy crisis or to put it bluntly, to survive and is what keeps the project running. Those who went had to be in cyrosleep as Pandora, the new planet is 4.4 light-years away from Earth. The movie is both a show and tell with its incredible graphics of a new world, its nature and of course the natives, the Na’vi, blue people who stand at 10 feet tall and its story plot of the mission to collect the resources and a turn of events after the main protagonist learns about what was going to happen if the mission proceeds.

I like how the actors played their parts well, and not just with their words but with actions as well. Some actors in movies struggle and get nervous and would cause themselves to not sound or seem natural. Zoe Saldana who played Neytiri, the Na’vi princess, was perfect for playing the role in this film as she could not only play the part but was actually able to get into character for this film. For example, she manages to accept a different accent to mimic being a native Na’vi.

The computer-generated imagery also known as CGI, can only capture the movement and facial expressions in animated forms, but it is the actors job to give life to their characters. The director, not only did he capture the motion, but also the intent of the actors to make his characters even more realistic.

There are of course strengths and faults in this movie just like any other. One of the biggest faults in this movie is that the transitions from one angle to another is a little off but hard to notice. For example, a different hand positioning from a camera angle to another and mild nudity of the natives as another fault. The strength of this film is that it follows its theme and executes it as the film goes towards the end, they of course follow up and was able to save the environment from the destruction.

Overall, I think the movie ”Avatar” is a great film. It being rated as PG-13 is at minimal as the faults of those who are younger would have to watch the violence and mild nudity. I personally enjoyed the film and it left me in amazed and if you haven’t seen it yet, then I suggest you go see it now. It would not only leave you at the edge of your seats but also keep your blood pumping . 7½ out of 10

Cameron's choice to create a 3D visual feast was a wise one as it allowed for the audience to invest in the world they're creating. It's a work of great effort and skill in both direction and performance as the motion sensory method of animating the Na'Vii allows for realistic cgi movements. It's a cinematic achievement that should be regarded as more than just a star crossed lover story but an epic Sci fi with few limits and a pg story of love. Expand

I don't know if it's because that's where the big fight scenes started to happen but yeah, it's got a decent cast but the plot is ok I guess. Also, I will have to say this though, I really liked the score of the movie from James Horner, I think that it worked really well from start to finish. Finally, the fight scenes were quite enjoyable for the most part and I think the CGI throughout this movie is incredibly good but I think that's about it really. Expand

Historia nadal miejscami się nie klei i jest pełna klisz oraz magicznych uproszczeń. Jednak ten film nadrabia fenomenalnymi efektami specjalnymi - robi wrażenie

However, the story in this is just too predictable. There is some genuine moments that makes you sit back and wonder how it would feel like to be in that characters shoes but the story ruins it for me. It is one of those movies you don't watch for the story I guess. I just do not understand why it is SO POPULAR. I get its very pretty and all and I personally loved it the first time I saw it. But as time has gone on, it makes me wonder if it was more the spectacle of it being so big and immersive that got us all hooked on it. Expand

To be honest this is not my favourite Cameron's movie. Maybe because I saw it on TV and the film really loses a lot if you experience it that way. This film should be experienced more as a cinematic experience and outside certain contexts it turns out to be a normal but pleasant film.

I knew the special effects would be amazing before I even entered the theatre, and I'm not lying when I say they were. The setting had been beautifully painted by James Cameron for the audience to view and enjoy. A location you wish were real. You'll become enthralled, that much is certain.

The story, though, is what I had anticipated would follow next. Without a doubt, it was a fantastic narrative. But after watching the teaser, you already knew how everything would turn out since it was so simple. Additionally, I found the stereotype of the army guy to be too strong.

This film is good only for the special effects and for the design of the creatures, the rest is not that great and the plot is even worse because it is banal and without particular feeling.

Beautiful visuals, some good advances in CGI are shown in this flick. But that is about it. It is a 3 hour tech demo. This is Fern Gully almost scene for scene but stretched out. It's nice to see state of the art however I am a little tired of how easily people ignore all other aspects of the film as long as it is pretty enough. I look forward to when these new techniques become more affordable so that we can have the technology along with some more in-depth writing/direction. Expand
