Often, entire families can't find a movie that they all can agree on. But for sure, this is one of the best movies of al times. I will be blown away if Cameron doesn't recieve multiple Oscars for best graphics, best actors, and best movie of the year. Overall, everyone should see Avatar for a bit of something they like. Avatar is definitely the best film of the year, and one of my favourite films ever.
Yes, the dialogue can be cheesy at times, but this film isn't about that: it's about visuals and about actions. And yes, a good film can be about those things, too. It definitely has some good ideas behind it (environmentalism, tradition, old ways of living vs modernisation) and those are definitely present in the film. The films biggest strength, though, is definitely its visual power. It is so moving and just makes you want to plant a tree, haha. It is just amazing. I'd highly recommend it to everyone.

Perfect effects, and I can honestly say, it was the first film I ever saw at the cinema with which I didn't want to pause and walk out for a couple of hours. The ONLY film. Greatly looking forward to the sequel. There really isnt much I can say about this film apart from, it ticks every box. Just next time, Cameron, jazz the plot up slightly? This film was nominated for an unbelievable 128 awards, which includes 4 Golden Globes. If that isn't enough to convince you to watch it (if you're one of those rare people who hasn't seen it already) then just take (At the time of writing) 1,309 positive Metacritic reviews. Completely epic, and only 40% live action, with the other 60% being made up of the greatest technologically advanced CGE. The highest-grossing film ever made, by a large margin. ( 0.8 Billion US Dollars more than its closest competition, another of James Cameron's films, Titanic. In total, Avatar has so far made $2.6 Billion.) So in-depth was the making, a 1,000 word language for the Na'vi was created. No wonder it took 16 years to make.
10/10. Why? Because it's a masterpiece.

Avatar is a revolution for the genre and is basically the Star Wars of the next generation. This is Cameron's true masterpiece, and is the greatest 3-D film of all time. Many naysayers say the dialouge does not sound real and is just terribly written, but to me the conversations sounded more realistic than some films. Personally I found the dialouge intresting and very lifelike. The acting is good on the most part, with a few exceptions. The audio is also exceptionally good. The background score is good and backs up exactly what is happening, and thats not all.Explosions sound like explosions, the wind sounds like it is blowing, and embers sound like their burning. I have never felt so submerged into the movies environment. I literally felt like I was flying with Jake and Neytiri on my own Banshee. I didn't even care that the story was unoriginal. The Lion King wasn't an original story but its still fantastic. Everything James Cameron touches turns to gold. The only reason people don't like this movie is because of it's anti war message and because they think it makes the USMC look bad. Get over it, its a movie. Shouldn't have lost the Best Picture Oscar to The Hurt Locker. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ah Avatar, where can I begin? This movie is a masterpiece of a motion picture! Everything about this movie is amazing! The plot takes place several thousand years in the future, where mankind has run out of resources, and are now looking for more on distant planets. They then come across a race of humanoids called the Na'vi, and go to war with them, all because the humans are stealing their resources. This is a very good, yet a tad bit unoriginal plot that everyone loves. As you can probably expect from this film the humans are the bad guys. The visual effects are excellent! Everything looks very realistic, and I love that! The character development is great too! It shows the main hero turning from a human to a Na'vi. Personally, I see little problem with this film, other than its plot, which is a little unoriginal. I wish the video game based off of this movie was better (see my review of that for more details), but it is unfair to judge a movie by its video game. Overall, this is the near perfect film! Expand

In order to become part of the avatar program (the DNA of the user and the indiginous natives, that was fused together in order to befriend them). He has to befriend them so that the other humans can get a rare element that happens to be under their home tree.it turns out that the real bad guys are us. 12 years is a long time out of the directors chair, but for Cameron this was necessary to create his vision for perfection, for technology to catch up on his dream, and boy oh boy was the wait worth it.
Cameron's epic tale is a war story of sorts, set in perhaps a not too distant future when humans have basically used up all resources on earth, and have sent many soldiers and scientists to the moon of Pandora, a distant planet in an entirely different star system.
Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is our paraplegic hero, a former marine who is sent to replace his deceased twin brother as a Na'vi hybrid, or "Avatars". These are created using human DNA and the DNA of the native tribe of Pandora, the Na'vi. Jake is soon tasked with infiltrating the tribe as a mole in a bid for them to give up the location of unobtanium, a precious mineral which can be used on earth.
Without going into too much more of the story, this film is beautiful, stunning and is a breakthrough in modern technology in cinema, the world of Pandora which Cameron has created never looks overly CGI, it looks, well, real, quite an impressive feat, the rumoured $300 million budget has been put to good use.
What is most impressive, however, is the cinematography Mauro Fiore, who has superbly collaborated with Cameron to create an alternate universe to get lost and to fantasise about other worlds.
To put this up against some of the best epic films of our time, the Star Wars franchise, Lord of the Rings and even Cameron's own Titanic, Avatar can proudly sit amongst if not above them, Star Wars was a franchise that had already made its market, LOTR were already a set of books and Titanic was a real life event, Avatar is a completely original concept, with obvious similarities to other films, but it is truly remarkable the scale and size of this film which was unsurprisingly over a decade in the making, but is not appreciated in its fullest to what has been achieved, a true mile stone, a technological and cinematic anomaly.
Only question and drawback I had from this film was simply...why did it have to end?

There are way to many people that simply "like" this movie and I don't get how that's possible. It's great in almost every way. Second, just because a film has similar theme and plot element as other films (Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves), does not mean it's automatically unoriginal? I see the similarities between the films, but it doesn't bother me. Why? Because this is a brilliant film. So what if it is, Avatar has created it's own little world when it comes to film. Nothing compares to the visual effects, graphics, and action. I don't think people realize that; Avatar has revolutionized cinema!

It is without a doubt the most visually beautiful film ever made. The world of Pandora is as detailed and alive as any setting you'll ever find in a movie, and quite possibly even more so. The story may have been done many times before, but it's still very engaging. There are moments that are powerfully charged with emotion, the direction is flawless, and the scope and scale are both breathtaking. There is also an extremely resonant atmosphere throughout. James Cameron has created what is quite possibly his best film. It's an instant classic, full of deeply human and resonant emotion, groundbreaking visuals, and viscerally stunning action. My only real complaint is that the dialogue can be somewhat clunky, but the rest of the movie quickly sends this to the realm of nitpicking. Please choose to watch this instead the next time you even think of checking out one of the lousy Transformers sequels. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an amazing movie and the ability to bring the viewer deeper into the realm of new belief is not comparable. James Cameron was able to strongly voice opinions through the characters and situations presented in Avatar. From the story line all the way down to the visual effects, the movie was spot on for its delivery point.

I don't believe that this movie set out to push its belief and logic on the viewer, but set out to prove a point in society; that is, that our world loses sight of essentials when we are in need of any resource. The beauty and character of Pandora is easily forgotten by the drive to gain substance. We have a long line of character personalities from the general who at any expense will not be stopped in his need for what seems is payback, to the scientist who wishes to gain knowledge from the indigenous peoples.

I think there is a stronger presence in this movie for a world in search of answers, or unwilling to see whats in front of us. In modern world we struggle to see that there is a God, much like on Pandora. The beauty of the creation is hard to enjoy when you see it as a mere object. The creation, just like on earth, was created to prove a maker! Losing sight of this turns us into mere objects for pure progression, nothing less nothing more, but we are caught wondering what is this life for? The answer lays on the lines more deeply of is there more than this life or is this it? Pandora, it seems, attempts to answer this question through its deity. There is a higher power that brings life and beauty but the inability to come to that realization creates what seems is a monster in the characters seeking their riches.

I think the deeper questions are not along the lines of, what was the point of this movie? But, more along the lines of what can we learn from this movie. There is a bold statement made about culture today, do we see that ourselves, or are we blinded by progress much like from the humans in this movie?

I think many dislike this movie because of its bold undertones so we flee or become stand offish. There is a constant critique about controversial movies, but what about sitting back in learning rather than being so critical?

Maybe it is just all of the subpar Netflix movies I have been watching recently, but “Avatar” has aged exceptionally well in the 11 years since its release. The battle sequence actually has emotional resonance. I have seen so much war in Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Marvel movies, but I never cared about any of them. Cameron got me invested in a way none of the others could. If you can enjoy a roller coaster movie, you should love this one, especially if you have a solid theater system. If you can find a way to watch this as it was intended, in 3D, by all means do it, but even in old fashioned 2D, it was amazing.
I don't know what percentage of the Neytiri character is Zoe Saldana vs. the animators, but somebody deserves an award for that role. There is a deep passion expressed by her that is very rarely captured on film. I give it an A, make a point to go see this movie.

All I ask is that you please be respectful of my opinion, just as I am respectful of yours. Please, and thank you. Now, let's begin.
I've been circling back to "Where the Wild Things Are" quite a few times lately, but let me circle back to it one more time. As I mentioned before, the end of 2009 graced us with a few incredibly polarizing films. "Where the Wild Things Are" (is it a brilliant portrayal of childhood or a weird, boring, creepy film?), "Michael Jackson's This Is It" (is it an honest portrayal of Michael and his concert or a ploy to make money?), and "A Christmas Carol" (does the visual splendor make it worth watching, or is it too overwhelming?) helped create some interesting conversation pieces at the end of the year (I've also heard that "2012" was polarizing, but I can't really speak for it, as I haven't seen the film). However, one film was more polarizing than all the rest, and that was box-office sensation "Avatar." Were the groundbreaking visuals and revolutionary 3D enough to make the film great? Or was it another case of style over substance? Does it deserve to be the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide? Or is there no logical explanation as to how/why that could've happened? Was it worth the hype? It's a matter of personal taste, but I personally believe that it was worth the hype. It's brilliantly-crafted, it's exciting and it's memorable, and while the story isn't the most original, breathtaking thing ever, somehow the movie is still so engrossing even without a highly-original script or original characters. The characters themselves are actually quite memorable, and the film actually has some pretty interesting themes to it in regards to politics, culture and religion. There's also so much that can be interpreted from the film, which I think is part of why it works: you can make a lot of things out of this film and a lot of those things make sense. Even for a film that started production in the 1990s, "Avatar" is a worthy conversation piece and a wonderful film overall. It's not for everyone, and a ton of people will definitely voice their displeasure with the film, which is perfectly fine, but in my opinion, "Avatar" is a great film and a very memorable experience.

The only legitimate criticism I can agree with for this movie is the over-arching plot. Man evil, wants to exploit natural resources for reasons of greed and will destroy anything and everything in its way. Natives good, in tune with the natural state of things, being pressed by evil. Man sees error of his ways, switches sides and repels that evil. It's been done before...but never this good!

Anyone giving this movie below a "5" is either butt hurt about the themes of the movie, or simply didn't watch the same movie I did. This is one of only a few movies I'd ever consider giving a "10". I honestly would have given it a 9.5 if I could, with the only criticism being the plot isn't exactly original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. “Avatar” is one of the greatest movies to ever hit the big screen, and this is seen on the box office hits. At almost $3 billion, “Avatar” is the number one grossing film of all time. The film used an excellent plot, infused with action, romance, and drama, all while hitting home a true message. The message that the movie delivered can touch anyone that is able to view the 3 hour-long eye candy. The movie budget approached $300 million, adding a quality never before seen in cinema. This movie was a cinematic breakthrough, intertwining computer graphics with live acting, creating names for unknown actors, and leading critics to rave over the top film of all time.

The movie is based in the year 2154, on the distant moon of Pandora. Humans have ran out of a special mineral on the Earth, called “unobtanium,” so the humans travelled millions of light years, to this moon in the Alpha Centauri star system, to harvest this precious mineral. This moon is very Earth-like, with dense, green forests, a water-like substance, and many animals and creatures. A major difference from Earth is that the atmosphere is poisonous to humans. The moon is inhabited by the Na’vi: ten foot tall, slender, blue-skinned creatures, that somewhat resemble humans. In order for humans to harvest this mineral they search for, they have created human-Na’vi hybrid creatures, which can dwell among the rest of the population. These “avatars” initiate contact with the Na’vi people, and adapt to their culture and way of life.

The main character in the movie is a paraplegic war veteran, named Jake Sully. He takes pleasure in using an avatar, because he is able to walk when using it. During his “avatar” adventures, he meets Neytiri, a beautiful, talented Na’vi. Jake and Neytiri begin a relationship, and over the course of this relationship, Jake develops a bond with the people of the planet, and sees that what the human race is planning to do to them is wrong. He begins to fight the humans in his avatar body, and the humans eventually find out and take action. They prohibit Sully from using the avatar but he still manages to get through and get back to the Na’vi. The movie ends with a tantalizing battle between the humans and the Na’vi, in which the humans eventually fall and send the humans back to their dying planet Earth, with the exception of Jake and a few of the other scientists that teamed with the Na’vi to send the humans out. The humans that do stay behind are permanently transferred over to their avatar bodies, so that they can live with the Na’vi. The transfer occurs with the help of the goddess of Pandora, “Eywa.”

From the get-go, Avatar draws in the viewer, using Jake Sully as bait. He is a relatable character, but he also catches the attention of the audience because of his disability. His character is one of the main utensils that bring the whole conflict to fruition in the end. The computer graphics create an incredible sense of realism, as if Pandora and the Na’vi are really out there amongst the galaxies and stars. Jake’s relationship with Neytiri really brings out a warm, romantic side of the movie, away from all of the drama and adventure. Their journeys through the dense forests, encounters with wildlife, and her care for teaching him the Na’vi ways shows a serious relationship is forming. There’s even a love scene between the two thrown in, pasted among the glowing lights of the alien trees. During their countless adventures, they encounter many obstacles, as he tries to become one with the wildlife of the planet. Along with this romance, is the background debacle unfolding with the humans, planning to destroy the Na’vi “Home Tree.” Of course, the largest collection of this mineral the humans came for, is the lifeline of the Na’vi habitat. The resulting battle over this mineral has to be one of the most breathtaking, touching, emotional, action-packed, thrilling scenes I have seen. And the whole scene is conducted using computer graphics. You will leave the theater amazed.

This movie broke the barrier, and showed that CGI, or computer graphics interfaced, can be used as an art, and not to just create fake and corny low budget films. The film used new, young actors to attract a larger audience and paved the way for the beginnings of their careers. The movie was a breakthrough and proved that James Cameron still knew how to work the big screen and attract the masses to theaters. Thousands of critics rave over this movie, giving it five stars across the board, and
“Avatar” has cemented itself as a movie for the ages. And the burning question that is etched in minds across the worlds is, when is the sequel?

Over the years however I question myself if it was really that good except the phenomenal 3D effects (It is still the poster-child for 3D cinema). Strangely this is a common response now or lets say others had the same thoughts. For those who don't believe this. Have you heard Avatar being named in the best movie lists in recent years (not to be confused with most successful)? For itself it is James Camerons most successful movie and also the highest grossing film of all times (Switched with Avengers Endgame after re-releases). It has phenomenal 3D effects and is one of a few movies I absolutely recommend watching in a 3D cinema. The other special effects / computer animations were amazing too. They put a lot of effort in creating a world that feels genuine and believable. We never doubted the setting, worldbuilding or scenery. Alone for this I recommend to watch it. Lets go to the story: It is set in the year 2154. Earths resources are nearly depleted and humanity will face a dire energy crisis that will destroy civilization if nothing is done. On the moon Pandora in another solar system exists an element named Unobtanium (pun?) that can solve humanities energy problems. However there are problems as the atmosphere is poisonous to humans and it is inhabited by dangerous animal and intelligent but not technical advanced blue humanoid aliens called Na’vi. Mining the resources is devastating to the environment. It is the story of Jake Sully a former marine who will replace his deceased brother on a mission to Pandora. The mission will change and challenge him more than he can ever imagine. I am heavily avoiding spoilers here even why it is called Avatar. The story is excellent and engaging. However it uses familiar themes and tropes. It has themes from Princess Mononoke, Pocahontas, Daces with Wolves and the Emerald Forest to name those I knew. Because it is immersive and engaging this is not a weakness. It takes familiar themes, tropes and stereotypes and mixes them into a strong movie experience. There is also a lot of philosophical and moral themes to discus (We had a lot of good discussion back then). This movie is of cause also carried by the actors. We have Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and he does an amazing job He sells the emotions and inner conflicts well and shines with a great performance. This is equally true for Zoe Saldana. She made an awesome performance and is a highlight of the movie. The rest of the cast is strong too. We have Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch who is a deep character with understandable motives and flaws. Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine is the hidden gem of the movie. She made an amazing performance and deserves full credits. I also praise Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy Chacon and Lez Alonso for their performance. Every actor delivers and I see no missteps. I already mentioned the special effects and visuals. I can only repeat how amazing it looked. The world is fully believable and everything looks amazing (Wildlife, fauna and landscapes). The perfect 3D cinema poster-child. They put a lot of care and thought into it I I praise the whole team. The soundtrack by James Horner rounds up the experience. The rest was movie history as Avatar broke all box office records. It is well liked by critics and fans but will not be named as best movie of all times. Overall I am back to my beginning statement. It is a 10/10 movie when I watched it first. Later I had my doubts and think in the 8-9/10 range. However because of the worldbuilding and good memories I will go with a 10/10 and would recommend it for everyone as it has a place in movie history. Expand

Avatar is so realistic you could mistaken it to be 100% real. The story is the heart of this film as it drags you into the world of the planet Pandora which is inhabited by humanoids called the Na'vi. The actors and actresses are unbelievably amazing all of their performances, like Sam Worthington who plays Jake Sully, the wheelchair bound veteran who is given the job to control his dead twin brother's Avatar so he can convince a Na'vi clan to move away from the part of the jungle that they are in because the way of the RDA's path of the search of the rare metal Unobtainium that lies in the soil of the planet. Then we have Na'vi woman named Neytiri who is the clan leader's daughter, she was forced to train Sully to become one of them, which eventually makes them fall into love. Everybody else gave an A+ performance which was amazing. It will be a very very long time before we see another so incredible like Avatar and a while before another breaks it's massive box office record as the top grossing film all time with earning of $2.7 Billion. This film ushered in a new era in visual entertainment. All "3D" movies made after it look like pale attempts at imitation by people who don't know what they're doing. (No, the plot doesn't matter that much once you've made such a leap in visual technique. It just has to be a decent plot, good enough to keep the whole project together, and it is definitely good enough for that.) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Avatar was one of the best movies that I have ever seen! It was a shock to me when Avatar didn't win Best Picture at the Oscars. The visual effects, acting, character development, and the story-line was perfect. I highly recommend this movie to anyone! Expand

I remember being blown away and loving the 3D. I also remember leaving with a headache. It's funny how your perspective can change as you get older though. I recently bought Avatar on 3D Blu Ray and watched it on my PSVR. The 3D was good but I don't remember the story being this good. It's a story that really pulled me in and got me feeling for these characters. The entire cast was great. The relationship between Jake Sully and Neytiri felt real. She teaches him how to do everything really. Their relationship is the heart and soul of this film. I was really rooting for them and wanted them to succeed. It's also great sci-fi. This is something I could actually see happening in the future. Also if you can watch it in 3D. It's honestly not fair to rate this movie if you don't... It' absolutely stunning to look at. Overall watching this was a magical experience. I look forward to the other four movies and hope they make them in VR360.. Making them in virtual reality 360 degrees would put you in this world. That's what I want going forward. Expand
