Backbone is a post-noir roleplaying detective adventure, in which you step into the shoes of raccoon private investigator, Howard Lotor, and explore dystopian Vancouver, BC, beautifully rendered in high resolution pixel art.

After years of small-time cases, lonely evenings, and just barely scraping by, Howard Lotor is swept into a job quite unlike any other before it. What starts as a menial case slowly unravels into something much darker, pitting Howard against the oppressive, systemic power hierarchies of the City itself.

Backbone isn’t an overly long game, maybe 5-6 hours at most, but what it does in its trim time frame is craft a world and characters that we care about, a narrative that is constantly intriguing and surprising, and offer us just enough interactivity that we can progress almost without having to worry about any challenge. It’s a marvellous example of what the indie game space can do, and a title that everyone with – or without – a Game Pass subscription should check out.

The upcoming detective seemingly gets a mundane case of alleged cheating. As we progress, we discover that the bar the suspect likes to visit kills customers and sells their meat. Disgusted by what we saw, we promised to see the whole story. We meet the shop owner who collaborates with the main villain because they have his daughter. We meet a girl who becomes our partner, helping us solve more mysteries hidden from the public eye. We talk to the mother of a dead girl that worked for the antagonist. We find out about what they do to their workers. After that, the game's plot gets a little strange, at least for me. We somehow end up in the laboratory where they are working on some black symbiote from spiderman. We touch it, and it becomes part of us. We escape for some time, and we live under the bridge. Then the main villain catches us. Scientists who take tests on us let us free and go out of town. After that, we collapse, and the game ends. I am sorry if I mixed up the plot. I finished the game long ago. In my opinion, this game deserves 9/10 because of the fantastic plot and game mechanics. Solving puzzles, stealthy moments and conversations. It is an excellent game if you like detective games with complex stories. I love this game because it made me sit through full credits. I love every single fact about this game and how interesting it is. I found it only because of the game pass. I was looking through games, and it caught my eye. After a few minutes, I knew it would be great. It is a strong 9/10. I love it. Recommend it without hesitation. I think it's a must-play to experience this perfectly crafted story. Fantastic gameplay and see the hard work put in. Expand

Was fun for the first half of the game until it threw in a twist out of nowhere. You don't really get a full picture of what is happening in the story, and I feel like it could have done with another chapter or two in order to really flesh things out. The ending does not make a ton of sense given the context of the rest of the game. It starts out as a very gritty crime drama, escalates to a full-blown conspiracy, and ends suddenly with you dying because, aliens? The art, writing, and music are all top notch.

Had fun with the game for the first 5 hours or so. Great atmosphere and story.

Then booted the game again and suddenly the entire game was in Chinese. There’s apparently a quick language switch button (for whatever reason). Well, I pressed every button and couldn’t get it to switch back to English. Tried to go into the pause menu, but apparently the second option is New Game. This instantly overwrites your save and there’s no option to load the old one.

Who seriously comes up with this stuff. Had a great time playing it this far, but because of ridiculous game design I’ve now lost 5 hours of progress and have to start over. Won’t even bother.
