This game was way too overhyped. A no man's sky rip off and very boring. This Idea is old. The graphics are also outdated with awful character facial detail that took lifeless. It should be a Game pass free to play game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a total disrespect to the real players. Normal people who aren't company fan boys. Lots of loading screens, equal and empty planets, no facial expressions, complicated maps to understand, fake exploration, the game ship is just an illusion of exploration, space is a PNG screen, 30 FPS crashes and falls on many times, horrible NPCs. Everything that has been promised about this game is a real lie and illusion. A smaller studio would make a better game than that. Expand

I am 18 hours in and I didn't want to believe everyone stating it takes 10hrs to even get exciting.....guess what...its true but why? Why would you ever create a game that takes a min of 10 hrs to get good? Ridiculous and the game is a work of art without the art. I think gamers will know what I mean by that comment if they are playing it. The graphics engine is outdated.....its that simple and 25 years to make a game that plays like this with all the success Bethesda has had in the gaming industry doesn't make any sense. It's a game but nothing to get excited about. It is boring and that fact alone is why I will finish the story and then delete to never play it again. I don't have the time to waste when a gaming experience is not engaging me, at all, and bringing me back to want to play it . It feels forced just because of all the hype and I am still waiting for that WOW factor. After 18 hours nothing.........this is an upsetting reality to this game and I appreciate the gamers who are being nice but this is not the game I was expecting on any level. Expand

NPCs/AI, graphics, main story feels outdated and not interested. Would bebetter if it had an online part like Death Stranding with its buildings, or a pvp to test our spaceships. All the grinding is not worth it.

Good thing i have GP for a couple of games that I;m interested in. This is surely not worth the 70 or 100 euros

The game really opens up after the first hour or so. While it may be daunting having 1000 planets and moons thrust on you, its really well structured. It's also my first Bethesda game. While the graphics are nothing to boast about, the voice acting, scope and story more than make up for any wonky animation or NPCs.

Right away I got emotional, I couldn't contain the tears, I cried like a child, when I left my ship for the first time, the beautiful graphics, fluid and smooth movement of my character, impeccable soundtrack to make me shiver. And playing that stunning story, super well-crafted missions, side missions, everything from the fully detailed map, the houses, bases, ship creations, weapon mods, research, we can actually explore the universe. It makes me sad that a game of this level is being negatively bombed by Playstation fan boys, that's not fair, just because the game didn't come out for Ps5. Yes Starfield isn’t a perfect game it has its issues and just like many others I had high expectations and some wasn’t met but it’s still a great game probably the best Bethesda game they’ve made as of right now. They said Starfield was Skyrim in space & yet it feels more like Fallout in space. The only thing Skyrim like about Starfield is the old outdated inventory system and the fact that u can pocket almost everything in the game. That's about it. In the first 10 minutes of play, the game crashed & kicked me to the homescreen. I guess that too is Skyrim like. If I were someone who paid $70 or more for this game, I would be angry. Instead, I got this in Gamepass just like Redfall & we all know how that turned out. I have to admit, the visuals in Starfield look very dated. The frame rate is not stable and not locked at 30. It's not a smooth experience at all, and within 15 minutes, the game gave me a headache. That comes from poor optimization. It too is really hard playing games at 60fps & going back to 30 & that's what u have with Starfield. The space fights are about as boring as it gets. They are tedious to the point where you'll want to avoid them at all costs which is almost impossible. There literally is no excitement in this game. I almost fell asleep playing while exploring a planet. When I started playing Starfield, it literally felt like I was playing an old Xbox 360 game. It just feels dated! There is absolutely nothing next gen about this game or this experience. And why is the game freezing up on the most powerful console ever made? Why? Is Starfield a 1, 2, 3, 4, or a 5 rated game? No. I think those ratings are very unfair as people are probably review bombing the game. I think some people will have some fun in this game, just from the size & scope of the game alone.. There is a lot to do in this game! I have a friend who is a true fanboy and he absolutely loves this game. It's blows my mind, but opinions will always vary & I respect people's opinions especially in gaming. This is why the reviews are so mixed. For me, Starfield is not a next gen experience & it's not a game that people will want to sink 30 hours in before they start liking the game. Yes,, Starfield has pronouns. Pronouns are annoying and not necessary at all in this game. Why they are pushing ideologies & politics in video games is beyond me, but the pronoun thing isn't as obtrusive as some have made it out to be. It's very unnecessary but that doesn't make this game bad. It has many issues despite the pronouns. I have 3 Xbox Series Xs & one Series S in my home & 3 Gamepass subscriptions. I did not spend all of this money on this service & all of this money on the most powerful console ever made, for games that look dated & are poorly optimized like Starfield. If this is next gen on the Xbox, it's a step backwards in my book. Starfield could be better, but maybe in a few years when the mod community gets ahold of it & when Bethesda decides to use a better engine. For the people who question whether I'm an Xbox gamer & question whether this review is legit- most of my gaming is done on Xbox and has been since the OG Xbox days. Like I said, I have 4 Xbox next gen consoles & only 2 PS5s. So I'm invested way more into Xbox than Playstation. I have right at a thousand game library on Xbox & maybe 200 on Playstation. Xbox by far is where my gaming money is spent. It's sad that u have to explain stuff like this because of rabid fanboys & biased gaming sites will toss the review up as bombing. If I wanted to bomb it, I'd just give it a 1, & from where I sit, it's a 6 or 7 all day long. Expand

This is a game where I am regularly signing in to do one thing, then end up hours later trying to return to that thing as I was distracted by a bunch of other content. In one case, I went to a planet to get an item and got a distress call which sent me on a 2+ hour side adventure that I wasn't expecting. Many of the people writing stinging criticism of this game are super pedantic or hoping for pity clicks of their garbage content. Overall this is a 9/10 game, but I'm giving a 10/10 because of the babies that like to review bomb.

Starfield is a massive open-world space RPG that has been in development for over 10 years. However, it is a disappointment. While it has a lot to offer in terms of exploration, its technical flaws and lack of polish hold it back.

The game's biggest strength is its exploration. There are over 100 star systems to explore, each with its own planets, moons, and space stations. However, the planets are all procedurally generated, which can make them feel samey and repetitive. There is also a lack of variety in the wildlife and the environment.

The game's combat is also underwhelming. It is serviceable, but it is not very engaging. The weapons feel weak and the enemies are not very challenging.

The game's story is also a letdown. It is predictable and uninspired. The characters are also one-dimensional and forgettable.

In addition to the above criticisms, the game is also buggy and unstable. I encountered several bugs during my playthrough, including quests that would not progress and enemies that would not spawn. The game is also poorly optimized. The frame rate can be choppy, even on high-end PCs.

The game's UI is also clunky and unintuitive. It can be difficult to find what you are looking for. The game's dialogue is wooden and unnatural. The characters often say things that do not make sense.

Overall, Starfield is a flawed game that does not live up to its potential. It is a derivative game that borrows heavily from other space RPGs. There is nothing in Starfield that feels truly new or groundbreaking.

I hope that Bethesda will address the game's shortcomings in future updates, but I am not holding my breath.

Stuff like the loss of AI Schedules, looting changes on both NPC's and general "clutter", a terrible map for the surrounding area/city, the overall reliance on fast travel due to the way traveling and the instances work, space being a buffer instance where there's a small chance of something happening, but it's just there to get a view of the planet before you land on it, sandwiched between 2 loading cutscenes. (Biggest gripe, world feels so broken up and even on planets extremely empty.). A ton of the Bethesda "staples" are cut down to such a degree that it's hard for that level of immersion to "click" in the same way their games have since Morrowind to around Fallout 4. The very basic looting and equipping (We have now fully regressed into having a grand total of 3 equipment slots for armor with 2 additional slots for clothing.) The armor models comes in 2 different sets repainted, and guns are a weird step in a different direction from Fallout 4's customization, as there is much less of a reliance on it here. It's a weird mix of what feels like a blend of laziness, streamlining, or even rushing that I can't quite put my finger on for a lot of these sorely implemented features.

It's both little and big things that make me sad seeing one of my favorite developers streamline their games from tremendous RPG adventures, to instanced mindless looter shooters.

The game is fun despite all this. It has a lot of strengths, keeping at least a large chunk of the Bethesda charm in the jank that stems from the engine. Combat is the best feeling it's ever been. The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding and captures the world completely. Spaceship building is a blast. The new persuasion system is a massive win. The story and side content has been fun, but suffers from the very basic writing Bethesda suffers from.

Overall, It's in a weird place where I really can't recommend it unless you were a massive fan of Fallout 4 and want more of it, or just really enjoy the modern Bethesda design philosophy. It's a shame Bethesda gets the "mods will fix it" pass, Bethesda should be making better games. They've arguably gone downhill in most ways. Another reason is performance, at least on PC. There's no good way to recommend a game where even on a high end rig you're facing an unoptimized mess.

Can't wait to see where the game goes in the future, but with it's overall disappointing and streamlined nature, I would find it hard to see myself coming back to this game over and over again in the future like I have with previous their games back to Morrowind. Who knows if things will be fixed or changed, or if my opinion will change. YMMV

I wanted to love this game, I love space exploration as a concept, I love RPGs and the kind of "firm" Science Fiction tone this game uses (similar to Mass Effect). Problem is this game experience is frustrating to say the least.

Exploration is tedious because Starfield's universe is largely empty, especially when you deviate "off the beaten path." This was really surprising given Betheda's history and their famous touting of their worlds, I was expecting a game where venturing off the paths of quests would be like FO4 or Skyrim, where I stumble onto some side content that pulls me in and I look back two hours later and say: "Wait, I was doing a quest!" To be very clear: Starfield DOES NOT give you this experience in the least. Many of the worlds in Starfield are largely empty and offer few NPCs or locations to interact with.

The gameplay feels dated as well, not outright bad, more like they just took FO4, stapled on some 2016 No Man's Sky, and applied a new coat of paint. Ground combat is very stale, largely due to a combination of bad AI, bullet-sponge enemies, and that most guns have really toned down sounds... Then there is space combat. The ship and base-building mechanics are much improved from their FO4 roots, clearly this is where Bethesda spent A LOT of time, and it shows. I can say I was very pleased with what I could do with my ship after awhile and there are many options in regards to constructing your base/home. That being said, combat in space is just very poorly balanced because you have the same "bullet sponge" issues from ground combat, but the added difficulty of lacking cover. This places a lot of onus on the player making sure you are upgrading your ship, particularly on higher difficulties, and causes this heavy emphasis on resource gathering, hence the NMS comparison.

Then there are the bugs. I expected them given its a Bethesda game, but this... It isn't as bad as FO76, but it also feels like Bethesda just haven't learned anything in the last 15 years. I can't tell you how many times I had companions or enemies stuck on level geometry that would either impede my progress, and more than a few times it required me to re-load and hope I didn't end up with an enemy shooting me from behind a wall or above the ceiling where I couldn't shoot back or end up with a companion preventing me from moving into a room with the quest objective. I had crashes, I had physics and texture bugs, I had objectives fail to properly complete requiring reloads.

I compared this game to 2016 No Man's Sky earlier, and I really think that is what Starfield is: 2016 No Man's Sky with a Bethesda RPG skin. It has the same lifeless universe NMS did in 2016, the same mechanical issues with the world, which I assume are driven by lazy use of procedural generation, and many of the same problems with the gameplay loop. If you're willing to grind it out for the sake of the RPG mechanics and ship-building, the two lone bright spots of this title, then more power to you. Personally, I found this game tedious to play and unrewarding to explore.

Starfield is the embodiment of 'tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing right.'

It's like they handed Skyrim space gear and said, 'Fly, my Dragonborn!' but forgot to give it wings or a functional jetpack.

    Open World:
Starfield is a stale, soulless “world,” that feels disconnected.

Everything is locked behind a loading screen and the game doesn't have an "open world" to navigate and experience. You jump from objective to objective via the UI like some sort of CoD Campaign. You are not in control of flying your ship between systems, landing your ship, departing from settlements, attempting risky docking to board other ships. Everything is a fast travel cut-scene initiated via a key-bind or through the confusing UI.

You read that right. There is no traveling, landing, or exploring to do on your own. When you are “in orbit” around a “planet” you can’t go anywhere; no matter how long you fly for you are no closer to the planet you see ahead of you than before. That’s because being “in orbit” around a “planet” only serves as a “placeholder;” an enclosed waiting zone to open the UI and choose where to fast travel next. There is no open space to navigate. Everything is done via cutscenes which only make you hungry for more. Why can’t I fly my ship wherever I want to in a System? Why can’t I manually find a spot on a planet and land there myself? One click on the map and you suddenly teleport to Neon city. Where is the awe of discovering it by yourself through exploration?

This makes Starfield feel more like a collection of maps/dungeons with no clear link between each other, rather than a connected and breathing world. It's like playing Skyrim, but you are only allowed to teleport between dungeons through the map interface - without the open world in-between.

    Cities:
Like space, cities feel disconnected and non-immersive. New Atlantis, for instance, is not even a unified city. Instead, cities are split into various parts requiring you to fast travel between each district. Other than soulless “citizen” NPCs walking aimlessly around with no schedule, nothing of interest is going on to justify having so many loading screens.

In addition, almost every single building or shop has a loading screen to access, which is very weird since 90% of buildings with interiors are basically just an empty lobby with one shopkeeper. This makes simple fetching quests a nightmare. You have to go through 5 different loading screens just to deliver a package from one part of the city to another.

    Spaceship:
It feels like they wasted all these resources for the Spaceship builder, yet neglected adding gameplay that will make your spaceship meaningful. Space traveling, planet exploration, landing/docking mechanics, and fuel planning - just to name a few. As it stands right now, your spaceship is just a storage locker between your UI fast travels. It is so tedious to fast travel that you may end up not seeing your spaceship for hours during a playthrough, since you instantly teleport to the selected locations and spawn outside your ship. To see your ship and add “immersion,” you would need to add 3 more loading screens to your fast travels. Pointless, since you have no control over anything. You only get to watch the game do everything for you via cutscenes.

    Combat:
It’s… working. Like in any basic first-person shooter game. There are no “classes” or anything else that will make you think “Damn, on my next playthrough I am gonna play as X and Y.” You can tell by the Skill Points you get to allocate that all Traits offer small bonuses to combat (e.g., deal 10% more damage with Pistols) that add no distinctive gameplay or new combat mechanics. They are just… flat bonuses to damage, health, persuasion, ship damage. Class-wise, the only option you have would be to either play a ranged build or a (hardly viable) melee build. That’s it.

    Outpost Building:
Barebones and clunky. We will most probably see paid DLCs adding props and things to expand building, like they did with Fallout 4 (they released 3 paid workshop DLCs).

    Land Vehicles:
Yep, they did it too. The only way of traversing is by foot – no land vehicles/rovers exist in the future. Fast Traveled to a planet in a super-ship? Now you need to jog like clown for 1200m in a barren and empty wasteland just to reach an enemy encampment. Be careful not to go too far or you’ll hit an invisible wall.

    Story:
As soon as you launch the game, you are given a ship, a place to stay, and suddenly a full organization blindly trusts you – which is very off-putting. This feels like a big “roleplaying” part of the game is cutout.

    Graphics:
Starfield feels like a texture-enhancement Fallout 4 mod. There is little improvement between Starfield and Fallout 4.

What I love most about Starfield is its open world. There are more than 1,000 planets to explore, each with its own climate, fauna and flora. It is a pleasure to get lost in this universe, discovering new places and completing missions.

Starfield's combat is also very cool. There are many different weapons and abilities to choose from, and players can customize their playstyle to their preferences. Space battles are very exciting.

Starfield also has a strong role-playing component. Players can choose from over 200 skills, which can be combined to create unique characters. The game also offers many dialogue options, allowing players to influence the world around them.

Of course, not everything is perfect. The main story is a bit predictable, and the game has some minor bugs and errors. However, these are small niggles in a game that is, overall, very good.

If you're a gamer parent looking for a new space adventure, Starfield is a great option. It is a game that will keep you entertained for hours, and that will make you dream of other worlds.

It's not a perfect Skyrim and not a perfect No Man's Sky but a decent mix with endless potential thanks to the modding community. So for me it's value and selling points is in the foundation the game is at the current state and the mods to come.

The main quest is well made even if it's really a small part of the game, there are multiples side quests that are well scripted as well and that are going to keep you in front of the monitor for dozens of hours. The exploration is good even if there are probably too many loading screens, but it's a compromise we can accept for such a big map. The cities are big and full of people you can interact with that will give you informations or side quests. The thousands planet have been made to make the starfield universe feel realistic and like in reality most of them are empty, you will just land on them, have a look around and take same minerals or stuff that you need. It would have been impossible to create 1000 planets all full of life, cities or stuff to do, and it would have been also unrealistic. The poor AI of the enemies is one of the main problems of the game, even tho it doesn't affect it so much. The graphic is really good looking except for the faces that are static and lack of details. In this game you can choose who you want to be: you want to be a good astronaut? you absolutely can. You want to be a pirate? you can do it as well (even if your companions will not be so happy of your choice). If you are looking for a game like NMS, a game where you jump infinite times from a planet to another one, exploring with freedom planets full of life but without a real meaning, than this game is not for you. It's not an exploration game (and nobody said it would have been), it's much more: a real Bethesda RPG, with thousands of things to do, and with the exploration being the surrounding, not the main aspect of the game. It's a big game, but starts way too slowly, and may never get interesting.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
