The all-new Grudge Match System keeps track of the competitive history between teams and the introduction of SAPIEN Technology to the NHL franchise takes character likenesses to a whole other level. The addition of a revamped Franchise Mode experience, a brand-new WOC Live Events structure, HUT Wildcard Mode, and a simplified, single-path XP progression shared across HUT kicks Chel’s game modes up a notch. Check out all the new ways you can build your dream roster in Hockey Ultimate Team, including Wildcard Mode that brings unique rulesets to keep players on their toes and ready to adapt with each and every cycle. NHL 25 is the most visually stunning release this franchise has ever seen, and on-ice gameplay is an absolute blast. Franchise Mode was given a massive upgrade while HUT and WOC saw some solid improvements, but another year of neglecting Be A Pro leaves career mode players out in the cold.

NHL 25 introduces much-needed changes and improvements to the series, most notably ICE-Q, a revamped Franchise mode and generally smoother play on the field. The result is definitely the best title in the series this generation, except for a revisable passing system.

The EA NHL franchise has seen of lot of change in the last few years, both positive and negative. Despite EA throwing terms like ICE-Q at us, it finally seems like big gameplay changes from the last few years are starting to gel with one another. X-Factors plus pressure systems plus smart AI? It’s a literal gamechanger. I’ve had a blast so far and I hope that continues in weeks to come.

As readers have probably guessed by now, NHL 25 isn’t a “must-purchase” title, except for users that have taken several years away. That doesn’t make it less enjoyable — just less necessary. Updates to game modes could have been more notable and microtransactions continue to be a drawback, but there’s still plenty here to make this a worthwhile return to the rink. Ultimately, we may never experience another “NHL Faceoff moment,” but EA’s focus on more adaptive AI and improved player control raises the bar (slightly) in the right direction.

NHL 25 plays better than the last few games in the series, but it doesn't bring any real changes, improvements or new features. In the end, it's just an overpriced update.

What I’ve learned as an adult trying to learn new things (I took beginner’s swim class a few years back when a lifeguard suggested I should stay out of the deep end at my local pool, too) is that a bit of struggle is OK. It’s why, I think, I was able to let go of the frustration of NHL 25’s lack of tutorial or introductory mode. Despite its steep learning curve for a newbie, NHL 25 fits naturally into my little world of hockey.
