It's an okay game. Dare I say, even good. But it's not the second coming of christ that a lot of people are making it out to be.

It's an okay game. Dare I say, even good. But it's not the second coming of christ that a lot of people are making it out to be.

I just played Sekiro, and damn, that game is incredible. It's challenging, with a great story, and visceral combat. Which is everything this game isn't, so going from that to this was just jarring.

Combat in this game consists of rolling around like runaway tire while bosses spam attacks, and then occasionally getting a smack or two in. The fact that defense still consists of the same crap dark souls had 10 years ago is lame. All an agility character can do is roll around like a moron. Why didn't they at least try and put sekiro's parry in? Why isn't there a smaller step dodge that's actually useful? All you can do is roll 5 times in a row, then get one hit in.

The story is, well, vague. Meh. That's all I have to say. Coming from Sekiro's story to this was disappointing.

In past souls type games by Fromsoft, you'd adventure a while, and encounter a boss, and get stuck on it a long time then finally have that "hell yeah" moment when you beat it. Just coming from Sekiro, each boss was exhilarating. Overcoming boss enemies in this game sucks ass. Why? The density. Everywhere you throw a stone there's a goddamn boss. It's so tedious. There's no pacing, it's all just boss enemies everywhere all over the world that you'll die to 5+ times, and then actual turbo bosses that you'll die on 30+ times in the dungeon areas.

There's another issue with combat. In the open world, fighting on the horse is optimal nearly all the time. Like 99% of the time. In a game where death is so punishing, it would be stupid to not do the most optimal thing. It's also optimal to just run past and completely ignore the existence of a lot of enemies. The reward for killing them just isn't worth the time. Who the hell designs a game where you're just supposed to bypass things people put weeks of work into designing?

The open world is good I guess, if a bit monochromatic, with a few exception areas that are incredible to behold. Some areas are really fun to explore. Some are awful and incredibly aggravating. Fast travel is a thing. A big thing. There are bonfires every 10 feet. And you'll be fast traveling between them all the time because of the tedium factor involved. I really dislike fast travel like this but whatever.

Overall I'd just call this game amazing, annoying, tedious, and fun, all at the same time. It's definitely not a 10/10. It's dark souls with a bigger (and less good, in my opinion) world. It'll give you a good 150, 200 hours of playtime. I really wish they at least tried to innovate on the crappy and dated dark souls combat, instead of making us roll more than a stoner in a joint factory.

A story where you would have to collect tax from Marika would make more sense than this mess.

I rarely come across masterpieces nowadays and I've completed very few action or RPG games the last decade. And then came Elden Ring. Elden Ring is a masterpiece. I just finished putting just over 200 hours into my first playthrough, during which I searched every nook and cranny, tried to fight every enemy and boss, tried to find every item, tried to finish every quest, and accomplished most of that. A masterpiece. Beautiful. It's a modern and mature Zelda, a new gen and darker Skyrim with greater difficulty and less time-consuming and useless systems. It's grand. It's art. And I recommend it to every gamer. If you can get over the difficulty, you will be rewarded. And I never liked Souls-type games one bit before ER, but I see dopeness and beauty even in death in Elden Ring - how cool the enemy looks as he stalks over your body, the environment, the graphics and grandeur of it all. A masterpiece. Bravo, FromSoftware. Expand

This game is mediocre in every way.

Biggest difference between other souls games is the huge size of the map. That means they had to put a lot of filler in to the map to accommodate for a full open world. This game has more in common than latest assassin's creed games than to souls/bourne games. What a disappointment...

It's the reason they made this huge game so quickly. Still though, I'm 60 hours in and I'd recommend it. It's the same old dark souls that we all love, but I would only wish for some more innovation. Never was there a point during my 100 hours in the game so far where I had felt completely defeated; I was always improving learning the moves of bosses and standard enemies alike.

A challenge was not the only thing Elden Ring brings to the table, it also features a vast open world that is constantly rewarding the player for exploring. There are an absurd amount of weapons, talismans, sorceries, and incantations to be found; and just as many unique variants of said gear that feel different.

I played Elden Ring on my Xbox One S and the graphics absolutely still hold up a generation behind. In my entire Elden Ring experience the game only stuttered a few times when certain open world weather effects were active. I imagine that this wouldn’t be a problem on current Gen, and even so it wasn’t inconvenient enough to take away from what I’d consider to be a perfect game.

Great visuals, large world, extremely unintuitive gameplay. Combat? Ridiculously off balance area of effects and hitboxes that dont match visuals, laggy responsiveness, AI counters everything while you get to slash at an ankle here and there ad naseum, one slight screw up and your dead. Combat is a complete turn off, totally regret this purchase.

I wish more current game developers would rip a page out of Fromsoft's book because no game i can think of in the last few years even compare. 2022 game of the year hand down, possibly game of the decade.

The open world is amazing, there is so much detail to this game. But I can’t really call Elden Ring a game, because games are fun. Elden Ring is not fun. Its very simple why it is terrible.

Elden Ring punishes you in more ways than just charging you $70, by giving you re-used Bosses, lots of dead ends, terrible game logic, zero fun, and a broken controller. Its mainly the terrible boss design, I get killed at full health in two hits while taking 30 minutes to recover from the last attack! And to just arrive at the boss fight, you have to deal with a plethora of nuisances that deal unreasonable amounts of damage. And by late game, you can only really level up your character and weapons by killing the bosses that kill you in less that 10 seconds. What really aggravated me and lots of other Elden Ring players was the Godskin Duo, the most annoying boss in the entire game. They are near impossible to fight without dying immediately. I know Elden Ring has one of the largest and most detailed maps, good graphics, and is a great challenge, but it all comes down to how much fun and joy you can have. There is no fun and joy in this. Zero. It is mentally draining to play. You should only buy Elden Ring if you an absurd amount of time on your hands and if you hate yourself.

Fanboy fodder. Games that do not have a save-on-demand feature are by the very definition, insane. Why would anyone want to traipse across a vast world, with little to no help against enemies that are way too difficult and not scaled? I am incredibly biased because I hated Dark Souls. Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
