Bethesda has taken a great series of games and ruined it with this latest release of FallOut. I have played them all since the release of the first FallOut, always trying to finish the game to 100%. Now they add this horrible version known as FallOut 76. It is indeed, the worst in the series I have played. This has ruined the FallOut saga for me.

why bethesda...why would you do this to fallout. If there were NPCs and a richer immersive story, this could be the best game..hands down. RDR2 for the win.

I'm a lifelong Fallout & Elder Scrolls fan, and have always extended the benefit of the doubt to Bethesda regarding buggy games because these are massive worlds and problems are to be expected. That is over now. I will never look at or treat Bethesda the same way again. From now on I will read reviews and watch videos of their games before I buy them, if I even do.

My major problem with 76 is the server issues. And by "issues" I mean I can't even log in to the game most of the time. I work for a living and have extremely limited amounts of time to give to anything at all, including movies, TV shows & games. I do not have time to sit and try for a half hour, which has happened often, just to get into any server at all. Regularly I have to back out to the Home screen on my X, start up a different game, cancel out of that, and then I can get into 76. All of this is after the recent 50 GB day one patch & the next 50 GB update which was supposed to fix these issues.

I simply do not have the time for this nonsense. I sold the game last night and will take that money and put it towards getting an older Back Compat game, or Red Dead 2. I do not tolerate anything wasting my time, and that's exactly what 76 did. And I paid $60 for Bethesda to waste my time, which is infuriating.

Never again will I give Bethesda leeway for this stuff. And now they've also made me question what games are actually worth dropping $60 again at launch.

    Bethesda screwed up, big time.

Glitches galore, unstable frame rates, major, MAJOR pop in, screen tearing, uneventful and stupid AI that goes from popping and spawning in anywhere they damn please to just freezing and looking at you at times in one place as you just pick them off. Remember NPCs? They are all gone. Now instead you have fetch quests. Even some as eventful as picking up a bottle...Instead of NPCs you are given quests through holo tapes and robots. What else is there to say about this game. Its a stripped down, dirty lazy, cash grab version of fallout. Its an online only, live service game with an outdated combat system that does not work in this online world. Dont let those people that spent their hard earn $60+ on this game and are defending it till no end and giving this game 10s fool you. Rent it first for yourself and make an educated decision before spending your hard earned money or just let Mommy and Daddy (grandma grandpa) buy it for you. A shell of a fallout game. A wannabe fallout game. A vast wasteland devoid of any meaningful things to do while trying to earn your cash through putrid micro-transactions. Im sick of this excuse. "but you need to play it with friends, its fun with friends" A game should be fun on its own merit by yourself or with friends. Having more fun with friends is icing on the cake. The enemies are interesting and the world looks good for the most part but besides that there's not much about the game thats any good. Controls are still Bethesda-style clunky and downright terrible when compared to most other games released today. It's a half-baked exploration game with a Fallout skin, and that's about as deep as the game goes. This feels like it would have been good on the last gen, but on its own and especially comparing to other games out now you could be buying, the case for Fallout 76 is pretty weak. Expand

This has to be a massive disappointment. I have played the Fallout series going back to 2008 when Fallout 3 was released. Based on how all the previous Fallouts have sold, they didn't need to go in a different direction, Fallout sells. They should have made a traditional Fallout game that used the same engine as 4, and made it a spinoff like Fallout New Vegas. But instead they turn their back on their fan base, and appeal to a smaller crowd who doesn't play Fallout, just so they can milk microtransactions. I did not like playing Fallout 76, I can't get immersed in the game because there is no NPCs, and trying to read a terminal or note only to be getting shot at by another annoying gamer trying to pvp me. It's annoying, and is not Fallout.
This is just a mmo with Fallout skin, but it is not Fallout, just a desperate cash grab.....

What was a great company has gone in a very disheartening direction, simplifying their games from true RPGs to Action Adventures which devolved into a Free Roam Shootem Up and now to whatever you call this. Absolutely pathetic there’s micro transactions when we have a quarter of a Fallout game here. Now to ignore the knife Bethesda put in my back and review it as a game on its own it’s probably a 5 or 6. Typical buggy launch that can be expected of these games (Really was Skyrim any better on release?). Shooting feels clunky as always and Vats has been altered to work in real time but it looks and plays stupid. Missions and story are very stale without NPCs to bring them to life. Graphics really show their age against other games this year like RDR2. Creation engine is as outdated as Gamesbryo was for New Vegas (They still made it work better than this however). As an MMO it has very limited pvp options and safe guards anyone from losing anything of value. As a survival game it’s hit and miss, they put the need to eat and drink however items are rarely ever scarce and there’s no real repercussion when you die. Big map that can have immersive Fallout times when your exploring the landscape alone or with a friend. Random people ruin immersion and fun with their wacky pink hair and colorful power armour cussing profanity over the mic. This is a medicorce apocalyptic half MMO, half Free Roam Shootem Up survival type game. Hilarious how Forbes defends them while they are always the first ones to get press coverage regarding their games. Yeah that’s totally not corrupt. Expand

Technology-wise, it is Bethesda at its *finest*. Bugs-galore. Performance is right out. I have an Xbox One X and when I say the game chugs along at 15-ish fps in public events I'm being generous. Couple that with the game not reacting under those conditions and you got a recipe for disaster. Forget firing your gun at mobs, or even moving, if it's not the terrain bogging you down it's the melee attacks of the mobs, which under 10-15fps you simply cannot outrun or move away from. Forget about getting a stimpack going and surviving, that's right out.

If this game ran at 60fps or had better graphics on my Xbox One X I could see it as a technology demo but right now it is far from a demo of anything but mediocrity.

This is not "Fallout with multiplayer", this is a multiplayer walking simulator with guns, in a Fallout world, nothing more.

Give this one a pass. They can patch out all the bugs, even improve the performance, but I highly doubt they can ever make this game fun.

I'm supposed to believe every single human survivor suddenly died in the last few months to 3 years? There's TONS of evidence of people that were here recently but NOT ONE of them is alive? Okay....

Second, this game is buggy even by Bethesda standards. It lags and glitches extremely often on every system. The Xbox one X is the worst though. Many people complain they have no audio, though I don't have this issue. The issue I and a ton of One X users have is an issue with "overheating". I put that in parenthesis because the system isn't actually overheating. It's a bug that shouldn't even be possible but Bethesda's legendarily bad programming has found a way. It happens most often when fast traveling or leveling up but can really happen at any time. I rarely play more than 20 minutes without the system shutting off and I've never played over an hour at a time.

This game was not even remotely ready for release, and Bethesda should be ashamed that they pushed it out anyway. Absolutely disgraceful.

With Fallout 76, it seems that Bethesda has stripped away the aspects of the game that made it worthwhile, and lazily left in everything that made it so frustrating and broken. Even most of the bugs and broken mechanics that were in Fallout 4 initially are still here, along with a slew of new issues. The game just feels like garbage to play, and it looks like a total mess. I'm glad I played this game on a friend's machine instead of purchasing it myself, and I feel bad for all of the people who foolishly pre-purchased it at full price (with even more milking to come through microtransactions and future DLC).

Fallout 76 is such a terrible abomination that shouldn't have been released in the state it is/was. Buggy, visually displeasing worse than Fallout 4 and the frame rate is the worst I've ever seen in video games for awhile. The world is void of life, PvP is pointless and the servers or what Bethesda call "dedicated servers" are awful and have took me out of the game many times. Quests are just fetchfests with no meaning or cause and there's no story in this game at all. No NPC's just crappy holotapes that no one focuses on. This game is just a shamble and shouldn't be £49.99 at this stage of it's development. It should be more half that if not £20 early access garbage that creeps around lately. I have nothing good to sat about this game. Bethesda need to innovate and either update their game engine or make a new one as their games look like things (Apart from F04) from PS3/X360 era. Developers need to stop shipping half finished games, then promise to fix the problems within 1-2 years when most of the player base has moved on. We want the product we're promised and support on day 1 then you may have the right to bring DLC/expansions to add game time. Players deserve more when the fact developers are able to make video games in the first place or sequels is thanks to the consumers.

Overall this is the worst game I've ever played.

It is NOT fashionable to hate this game, it is logical. There is bad press for a reason.

Graphics have NOT been improved upon, this feels like the graphics from an Xbox 360 and frame rate drops into an unplayable mess every other minute. (Look up F076 frame rate tests).

The "Quests" are given to you via Holotape (audio recording) and Terminal entries (text to read on in game computer). There are no NPCs, so interactive dialogue is out of the window. These quests are all the same; stumble across a tape/terminal, go to the waypoint the tape/terminal tells you to goto and kill the enemies. QUEST COMPLETE. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Most of the time, the enemies are exactly the same and not interesting.

The world doesn't change. You can goto an area, clear out the enemies and set up a camp. After you wander off or log out and come back, ALL of the enemies will be there and attack you. It feels like you as the player, make absolutely no impact to the world around you. Which, kind of is the point, isn't it..? "When the fallout clears and the doors open, you must rebuild." (Paraphrase).

Camp items are all locked, you need to discover recipes for a chair/bed/door/turrets etc. Which doesn't sound bad, but they are very difficult to come across. THEN you need to actually source the resourced to build the item like in Fallout 4. The items should not have been locked, resource gathering would have been enough. This makes camp building extremely slow and not in a fun way, which was annoying because it was one of my more enjoyable elements of Fallout 4. (Also, you cannot raid player bases, neither do they show up on the map unless you have them in your team.)

For information on bugs, just YouTube Fallout 76 bugs, you'll see for yourself.

Multiplayer is clunky and PvP is completely broken. On paper, the anti-griefer system looks great, However, in-game it is horrific and doesn't work. Imagine there is someone in your camp stealing your food or blocking your door, you shoot them. if they don't shoot you back and engage in combat, you can not kill them unless you stand there and shoot them with 100 shotgun rounds one at a time (Providing they don't heal).

Playing this game solo is impossibly boring, there is nothing to keep you emotionally engaged or to motivate you to progress.

If you are having fun in this game with your friends, fair enough. But let me ask you this, has there ever been an open world multiplayer that you and your friends haven't had fun in? Don't get confused with where the fun is coming from, your personalities or the game.

Even as a long-time Fallout fan, this is honestly the worst game purchase I have ever made. I have played the game for approximately 40 hours now and not one of those hours were fun. It was more about me trying to justify the £60 I had spent and slowly realising what an awful mistake I had made.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. This game will not get good enough with updates to warrant the amount of money this costs, it should be a free-to-play add-on to Fallout 4. An example of what should have been done with this is how Rockstar implement Online into Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, not charge full game price for what is basically a map expansion with no content in it.

PURCHASING THIS GAME ENCOURAGES LAZY GAME MANUFACTURING IN THE FUTURE. MAKE A STATEMENT AND GET THE GAMING INDUSTRY BACK ON TRACK. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS LEVEL OF CONTENT AFTER THREE YEARS OF PRODUCTION TIME FROM A TRIPLE A STUDIO WITH A MASSIVE BUDGET. DON'T GET MANIPULATED BY PRETTY MARKETING. (If they had spent half their ad budget on the game production they might have actually made something good.)

Maybe it will do a No Mans Sky and turn into something pretty decent eventually, but at launch this game should be avoided. It is currently drowning in problems both technical and creative and just generally feels like a game thats still in development and about a year off launch.

    - Lack of NPCs takes away a lot of the motivation to explore and pretty much kills PvE, especially solo.

All you're ever going to find is a holotape or note.

    - The PvP system is also quite poorly implemented. Anyone you attack will take drastically reduced damage unless they retaliate, the world is huge and resources are plentiful so theres just no real incentive to do it right now.

    - The world is ironically too much of a wasteland. Some of the environment design is decent but with no proper NPCs (other than protectrons, Mr Handys etc that have limited dialogue) and a very small amount of other human players around (relative to the size of the map) it feels like you're walking through an abandoned museum. Yes, its supposed to be post apocalyptic, but this takes that way too far.

    - The hunger/thirst mechanic is just an annoyance that gets in the way. You need to eat and drink far too often and of course most food/drink gives you radiation.

    - The game lags to absolutely preposterous levels as times. I'm talking literal slideshow.

    - A lot of times it feels like enemies simply materialised 5 feet behind you then darted at you at 100mph with absolute laser focus in a way that you couldnt possibly have pre empted. You can be in the middle of an empty field and then 2 seconds later getting swarmed by enemies that were nowhere to be seen.

    - Graphically its if anything slightly worse than Fallout 4 was.

It can be mildly entertaining for an hour or so here and there in co op with friends, but most things are. To reiterate - I strongly recommend you wait and see how (or if) Bethesda fix this game, and what they add to, before you consider buying it.

PS: Gotta love Bethesda spending time implementing microtransactions when the game has a myriad of serious issues that they should be working on first. Absolutely shameless.

As a bethesda fan I gave this game despite the bad comments a chance and played it at least 10 hours alone and further 20 hours with friends to make my own opinion. And i'm totally disappointed by bethesda, it was a waste of time to play Fallout 76. Never thought that I would say that about a Fallout game.

I've been a Bethesda fan boy since Morrowind. MORROWIND. I always had the greatest respects for Bethesda for creating massive worlds with easily 100's of hours of stuff to do and accomplish. Fallout 3 will forever remain my favorite Bethesda title for bringing a post-apocalyptic setting to life so well. However, Fallout 76 is where Bethesda ends for me. It feels like I got slapped across the face by Todd Howard's flaccid dick based on how big of a disappointment this game is.

    PROS:
There are a few new weapon/enemy variations that spices the game up from the typical Fallout formula. That's it for pros.

    CONS:
This game feels like a horribly ported mod for Fallout 4. It LITERALLY feels like an online mod for Fallout 4. There is absolutely nothing new besides the above listed. I can't describe how disappointing this experience was. I grinded nonstop hoping at some point that the game would get better. Hell, I hit LEVEL 110 AND IT WAS STILL GARBAGE.

The online doesn't work art all. Seeing Zenimax (the guys who did ESO: Online) it's shocking that they could make a much bigger game like ESO work but not Fallout. Granted, there are at least 10 studios that worked on this game which may be the main reason why it ended up as such a disaster. The graphics are exactly the same as Fallout 4. God rays come out of the f'ing ground (good job Todd). It still has the same old signature Bethesda textures where everything looks like ass up close. It also has BUGS FROM FALLOUT 4. Modders in Fallout 4 LITERALLY MADE A PATCH TO STOP BUGS IN FALLOUT 4. YET THOSE SAME BUGS GOT PORTED TO FALLOUT 76 UNPATCHED. At this point, I feel the modding community should own the rights to Fallout being that they do a better job than Bethesda's devs.

Now let's talk story. There is none. Okay, there is. But it sucks. You just go around the map, pick up holotapes. Done. That's it. There are ZERO human NPC's. This is Fallout 76's biggest downfall because NPC's are what bring the world to life. But because of Todd's terrible misdirection to make YOU, the player the NPC (no one acts like that).. we end up with this shallow, empty, soulless, obvious cash grab by Bethesda.

I loved Bethesda ever since I discovered Morrowind. I considered Fallout 4 a low point in their work because the story fell short for me but mod support reassured me that it was a good game because mods fixed a lot of what was broken in Fallout 4. However, Fallout 76, I hope remains on a **** list forever as an example as to what not to do when you decide to become a game dev. I don't know what to say, Bethesda. You **** it up.

I wouldn't even recommend this game if it was $20. The price has already dropped to $35-$40 and I feel cheated because I paid a full AAA $60. Thanks, dark souls.

Already sought a refund. This game is well below what Bethesda could produce. We know this categorically, as they have Elder Scrolls Online, not perfect, but vastly better. Graphics bugs, glitches, crashes.. and then.. Content? This better be a FREE title soon.. worse than Sea of Thieves at Launch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you liked Fallout 4 for the missions and crafting, you should like this game. I have been playing it non-stop since I bought it and I love it! There ARE problems... you will bet get disconnected from the server sometimes; however, it will put you right back where you were with everything you had. If you were "inside" a quest site, it will put you outside.

I have the regular XBOX One and I don't experience or really notice that much lag or frame degradation - perfectly playable.

There are no NPC's, but a huge part of Fallout 4 used tapes and robots to move the story along, so it isn't that bad. I think they did a good job with telling the stories and integrating everything. So, there are a lot of quests with multiple parts that I found very interesting.

I play alone, but I often interact with others. We trade things from time to time; I help people who get killed when I find them; and I work with others to complete missions. I am NOT part of a group with them, but simply working together at the same time. I keep the sound of others off and never hear them. There ARE a few grievers out there. I feel sorry for them as they don't know how to interact normally with people - bless their hearts! Be sure you set your settings so you don't accidentally
shoot them, and you can ignore them for the session. You can also just log off and log back on.

What I enjoy most is that there is a sense of danger to the world. For example, I was about level 12 and walking along a very quiet and nice highway. I noticed a couple of eyes quite a bit ways up ahead of me and hit my V.A.T.S. to see what it was -- it was a Level 35 Mothman!! Yikes! I took a different route. This reminded me so much of SKYRIM and walking right into a Dragon one time that was just randomly sitting on the road. Don't worry about the leveling though; if you follow the main quest line, you will find things appropriate to your level. You will also find some things you aren't ready for, so stay alert!

They have fixed quite a few of the things that were initially a problem in the beta. They increased the storage to 600 lbs. To be honest, managing that is kind of fun and it's a part of the game; you don't actually need all that stuff!! You will find it all over and find it very quickly. The monster spawning is now just about right; I finish areas all the time way before they re-spawn again. When someone else enters the area, the monsters DO come back, but the other person is there to help clean things up. Just work together for a bit and then keep on truckin'.

I gave the game a 10 based on whether I want to play it non-stop or not. I can't wait to get back to the game and find some more cool gear or just wander around aimlessly and seeing what happens next. You can't go very far before you either find something or something finds you!

With continued support from the dev team and updates weekly with new content and server stability fixes all the time this game has been making moves and slowly rising up the charts. It will take some time for this game to be in its prime but once it is. I see huge potential for this AAA game that at one point was dead. Now it’s growing and I’m very happy with the time I had in this game.

Not as bad as people make it out to be.
Hope they can add more content and especially stop making dumb decisions.
This game could be a lot better if they improved performance, added npc's (which is supposed to come with Wastelanders dlc), basically make it more fun.
Still have hope for this game!

The gameplay experience with other players is for the majority of the time good, everyone tends to help each other, but obviously the style of the game means people will be constantly at you too, 2 or more against one is hopeless and you can just watch any effort you've put in be destroyed. You only have a "camp" and a very small area and budget to build something, this is the only thing that remains when you log off the server. All other captured bases and structures are gone instantly.

There is no real story, the game feels dead inside with the lack of life and only robots you can "interact" with but no more than pushing a button for a random quote from them. This game is horribly disappointing. The only way this game could be redeemed some what would be if I could have the Fallout world to myself and my friends, not every random moron or give me the option of having players attack me or not (excluding captured base areas). Was it really that difficult to make a game that would have suited a wider audience? Not a minority.

First off, anyone giving this game a "10" are being completely dishonest and/or are trying to offset much of the low scores other users are giving this game.

Is this the Fallout that people loved? it is. However, it's like the kid voted "Most Likely to Succeed" and goes on to become an utterly hopeless junkie. They're still the same person, but just the worst version of themselves.

Let's discuss the graphics first. The game is slightly better looking than Fallout 4, but isn't as polished. You'll see tons of clipping issues, and you'll also see tons of things floating instead of resting on the ground.

The gameplay for the most part is the same as Fallout 4, except they made VATS real time. VATS occasionally works, and when it doesn't it's frustrating. Like, when you have 95% chance to smash a Stingwing with your super sledge, just to hear the thump of the hit and see your AP go down and the Stingwing take 0 damage. Then you see the same result the next 4 times you try it. VATS is only really useful to close distance in Melee or to land a shot on an extremely agile enemy.

Then there's the stash issue, and the fact that they lowered the base carry limit from the prior games. So having strength of 10 only gives you 200 units of weight you can carry before you become encumbered, and they give you 400 units for stash. Not to mention, this game is set in the "survival mode" of the previous Fallout 4 and New Vegas. So everything has weight. Oh, and good luck trying to sell anything. Vending machines have 200 caps to buy, and yet you can't sell to them. Vendor bots and various traveling merchants have 200 caps available to buy and it takes forever for them to restock; and when you buy from them, only a small percentage of the caps are returned to the vendors available caps. Also, you can't sell most items. When you can, you get pennies on the dollar; even with max haggling perks, everything always is sold to you at a significant mark up. This inventory issue was the biggest complaint throughout the BETA, and it's unacceptable that it wasn't fixed prior to launch. I've spent 99% of my time in game over-encumbered and unable to fast travel. I've been super encumbered, and forced to crawl , for way too long. That's with weight reducing perks and other tricks.

Then there are the broken quests. How do I love having my quest giver reside on the SW corner of the map and my objective being on the NE corner and get to the objective just to realise you can't interact with the object in order to complete the quest. Then another you need to search an area and install a tracking signal; only to have the tracking signal stop working; and when you quit, you have no way to install it again, so you it makes finding the item like looking for a needle in a haystack. I've come across at least 3 quests with quest breaking bugs.

Death in Fallout 76 is like Dark Souls, just instead of dropping all your souls on death you drop all your junk in a, at times hard to see, brown paper bag with all the junk you've accumulated. Usually, when you try to retrieve it while you have a marker to guide you, you either get ambushed by some radically OP mob of enemies like Death Claws, Glowing Ones, Wendigo, Scorchbeast and Yao Gui. They also have a real problem with enemy and weapon balancing, which can be compounded by getting swarmed by the mob of top of the food chain. I hit a KIng Mirelark with 2 mini-nukes, and it may have only took 1/4 of their health; and it was equivalent to the level of the Fatman I was using. Yet, back to my point on retrieving your loot after death, if you die before retrieving it, good luck trying to find it then afterwards. You'll still 400 units over encumbrance. Also, people can take your stuff if they get to it before you do.

Bounty system is broken, and because of it there is no way to escape PvP. You can open a nonplayer owned box, that clearly doesn't have a player owned item in it, only to get a message that you have a bounty for stealing another player's stuff. Yet when you actually take another player's loot from a world loot box, you get nothing. If you have "pacifist" mode on, it's literally like stealing candy from a baby for anyone hunting you. You do significantly less damage and they can do full. So never, ever, ever, put on "pacifist" mode. Player's can still kill you, and they usually wait to wail on you while you're in someway indisposed so they can whittle you to death, if you never intend to engage them back; and then they get a bounty for murder. You get like 10 caps for a bounty, and basic ammo is like 5 caps each at a vendor.

Final verdict, is the game fun or have some redeeming qualities? Yes, it can be fun. Even with the "emptiness" and lack of civilized life, it has potential. The fact that they knew about these issues by no later than day 2 of the BETA and failed to fix it by launch, is why the scores, and mine, are so low.

Since multiplayer aspect has to be balanced, the rest of the game is more of a give and take. The new perk system is somewhat confusing but decent. Weapon condition has been reintroduced to the franchise, but there are workbenches and junk everywhere so fixing something is only a short sprint away. Some weapons and perks have level requirements, but these pack a punch when you finally equip them. Every item you pick up has realistic weight to it (yes, even ammo at .003/round). Enemies aren't tanky but they aren't one shot either. In all honesty, it just feels like what it is: a fallout game retooled for multiplayer. It has great potential to be a fun and balanced game for players, but truth be told, it's no botw. Expand

This game was nearly unplayable at launch. Since launch, though, it has become the game it should have been at release through the benefit of numerous updates. It has gone from a buggy, glitchy mess to a solid MMO. It may not be a perfect 10/10 but the rating should reflect what the game is now and not how it was at release.

Why would i want to pay full price for a game that has decade old graphics and the same boring gameplay? Fallout4 barely held my interest due to the terrible graphics, this game several years later looking like a DLC for fallout4, no. I've loved this series since the very beginning. Yes, even the action-RPG Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. I've played them all to death, and I can say with complete confidence... I'm having as much fun exploring post-apocalyptic West Virginia as I've had everywhere else the series has taken me.

In some ways, Fallout 76 is the best one so far, in my opinion. Since it's online-only, there's no pause feature, so I better find a fairly safe place to hide when I need to step away from my Xbox for a minute. More than once, I've returned to find that some beastie has turned me into a snack. It's intense.

They've included many of the Survival Mode features from Fallout: New Vegas as mandatory game requirements in 76, and that adds another layer of intensity. Instead of providing a pile of groceries to sell for caps, you now have to scavenge for and craft food and drink to consume, or your hunger and thirst will weaken you and eventually get you killed. Ammo now has weight, so you can't stockpile bullets and cells without taking a serious hit to your Action Points as you explore. I love it.

The crafting has been expanded, and because I'm a natural born hoarder in games like this, I just can't get enough of this change. If it isn't nailed down, I'm taking it and making something cool with it. =D

But probably my favorite change is to the game world itself. It's easily the most vibrant wasteland in the series and the abundance of color reminds me so much of Oblivion's game world, another welcome change from the oppressing grays and browns of the last few games. In addition, they've greatly varied the lighting levels - many indoor areas are so dark that you're all but forced to use your Pip-Boy light... which makes you a monster magnet, adding yet another layer of intensity.

It all adds up to a fantastic experience, in my book. It's not trying to be Fortnite and I wouldn't be playing it if it was. I can't wait to see what they add, if Elder Scrolls Online is any precedent!

That said, I feel compelled to finish my review by asking the zero-score bombers one simple question and then setting some things straight...

What did you think you were getting?

Bethesda made it very clear from the beginning what Fallout 76 would be: A vast desolate post-apocalyptic exploration game with online multiplayer features in place of the previous games' NPC interactions, set in the hills and valleys of West Virginia, while still enabling the wonderfully lonely solo play we all know and love - and that's exactly what we got.

Enjoy the game or go play something you do like. Fallout is the game it has been since 2008. Stop with the hate already.

But it’s hard to feel as if you’re truly affecting the world when there are no NPCs to express satisfaction or disdain, or to be directly influenced by your actions. Even killing feels hollow. Some of my best battles in Fallout 4 came when I stumbled across an outpost and found there a raider in there; he’d yell and scream at me as we were facing off. The Scorched, while armed, feel like nothing more than zombies.

The addition of multiplayer feels as though it comes at the expense of Fallout’s memorable story-driven moments. What good is a vast map full of players if they're given little to no purpose? When no other players are around, the game’s world feels almost empty. The attention-grabbing locales and landmarks add to Appalachia's charm, but it's difficult to not wish for living, breathing characters to inhabit it. Post-apocalyptic West Virginia is described as a wasteland, and this term paints an inadvertent but accurate picture of what Fallout 76 is right now.

If you enjoy multiplayer games of this type and are willing to overlook the engine anomalies, you may find yourself rapidly addicted to the game's exploration density and loot systems. If you're easily frustrated by bugs and issues, you may want to sit tight a bit to see what Bethesda does to polish things up, cus oh boy, it could use a bit right now. If you're a fan of the single player, branching narrative the series is known for, you'll want to wait for Fallout 5.
