First, I've been with Halo from the beginning. The first release amazed, the second released was good with a dumb ending, but I had had a deep fear after seeing many unflattering screenshots that this release would not extend the state of the art and I'm sad to say its true. Aside from a few new weapons and vehicles and debatebly enhanced graphics the game breaks no new ground. First, I've been with Halo from the beginning. Aside from a few new weapons and vehicles and debatebly enhanced graphics the game breaks no new ground. Which is a shame for such an anticipated release with so much money behind it. Let me break it down. Graphics: 7 Not as good as Gears of War and not as good as Bioshock. The character models are average quality. For example, not as detailed as the players in Madden. Environment: 7 You'd expect to be able to interact with all kinds of things in the environment and blow stuff up. At least this is the mark of next-gen FPS today. Not so in Halo. You can knock stuff over, but you can't look inside of things, break things, use things, etc. Its a very superficial environment. Sound: 5 Oh boy. It's sad. I have a dolby 5.1 setup and the sound from Halo is very muffled and low-def. The weapon firing sounds or ok, but things like grenades sound like they are farther from you than they visually are. Little to no surround effects or ambient noise. A total lack of depth in the sound field. For the best 5.1 game sound, crisp and clean, check out Bioshock as the new standard (I'm not a fanboy, just using a real example of quality). Gameplay: 7 Same gameplay as before with a few new gadgets. No cover control (such as in GoW and Rainbow 6), no squad control, etc. Same, same, same. Story: 6 Getting a bit dated. The opening dialog is a bit perplexing. An utter lack of mind provoking elements in this story. Its a "story on rails". Not to mention, that for 3 versions of Halo the opening sequence is the cliche "the aliens have invaded our barracks" scenario. Tired! Get some new material. Overall: A very generous 7 Expand

Halo 3 is we pretty good game, but seems to cut you short again. The ads is what made this game larger then is really was. I'm a fan of the online play, but this should have been alll of Halo 2. I've only presently played single player but it is very disappointing. Bland graphics and sound, dismal AI and apalling script. A truly epic game (which this claims to be) would not sacrifice single player over multiplayer - both aspects should be outstanding. Poor effort.

Doesn't really move the series on from the original. Pales into insignificance next to the more accomplished multiplayer titles like GRAW2, Rainbow6 and the upcoming Call Of Duty 4. Halo 3 definitely lives up to the hype. The campaign was a decent length and ties everything together, the graphics are great though not perfect (more than made up for by the rock solid frame rate), and the music and voice acting was excellent as usual. Yay Im the Master chief, I kick Ass, Looks like ill shoot someone then, repeat till your eyes bleed (or you are stabbing them out). I never thought I would ever say that killing aliens wasnt fun but in this its a chore to keep myself from ripping the disc out of my beloved 360 and using it as a frisbee. I dont know how you could possibly care about going past ten minutes of this snoreville. I beat the first two stages ( heroic) using the left thumb stick and my fingers pressed pretty much constantly on the triggers. No jumping, no eqiupment no need to think no need to care. Who the hell said this was tactical. You are having a laugh mate. This has all the tactics and appeal of a dead baboon. I also get to listen to thousands of people that I dont like crap on about how awesome they are, how many kills they got.... blah blah blah. That might be a bit unfair but somehow I could put up with that banter during GOW but i cant in this and it can only come down to gameplay ( at least there was a third button to push in GOW). I dont know what you 10/10 people see in it but at least you like the game and dont feel so bloody ripped off. 3 years for a crap one dimensional shooter. Also its glitchy, idk if its just my copy or what but the the final cutscene just died, and i never saw the credits it just got stuck on a single frame, now i gotta replay the final part to see the whole thing. There are also many bugs from killing things, often the enemies will just start to run into a wall and keep running thinking they're going somewhere. not often but it happened a few times to me, ill kill something or someone and their body will do that annoying twitch if it lands on an edge or another object. Usually im not picky about little bugs like this but Bungie prides themselves at completely polishing a game with no bugs and my grade for polishing it is a B-, not the A that halo was or B+ that halo 2 was. Graphically it is amazing at times but a lot of things are just bland and look exactly like they did in halo 2. The explosions are the best ive seen in any video game thou. Multiplayer is better then any other console game of all time and in my opinion better then all computer games too because it is so accessible, and with downloadable content it will only get better. I was v.disspointed with this game. Graphics are below average, the A.I is boring, enemies just stand still and shoot or stand still and dont shoot. Multiplayer is okay but still eons behind PC FPS online games. Killing in this game is a skilless and bland excercize. Any gamer who has played a lot of fps will see this as very outdated.

To be absolutely honest, I give this game a 10. I have been a Halo fan through out the years and this one is my favorite. The campaign is a little short, however it is highly engaging, and truly a unique shooter experience. At first I thought the ending was extremely dissapointing and anticlimatic, however if you wait through the credits, you will indeed see the answers to your questions. I have never really been a Halo fan but I found myself more disapointed with Halo 3 than Halo 2. It was too short, the storyline is not engaging, the graphics remind me of Halo 2, The levels were repetitive and environments all looked the same, it has cheesy characters and a cheesy storyline. Multiplayer is fun. But there is no way I am going to pay to play over Xbox Live.

There is nothing wrong with it at all, the only things that really stopped me from giving it a 10 was the fmv and it failing to live up to my expectations..and also the Sun/NOTW calling it the game of the decade when that is just uter rubbish, but it doesn't surprise me with a tabloid that talks a load of crap! Also a few comments about the graphics, are you guys blind, "It looks like Halo2" was one comment..."what?!" Firstly no way, and second just no way. The game is amazing, the story is an intensive conclusion to an amazing trilogy, and quite frankly we need to take that part in mind. If you want a better more advanced Halo3 experience try playing the game on heroic or legendary and see what happens when the AI starts calling for reinforcements and backup, and starts making better use of it's tools and weapons. So 10 is my vote I have been a Halo fan since before I had an xbox, and I still think it is the best story based FPS and online multiplayer FPS to date. I can't believe all of the negative reviews I'm seeing. Those people who are giving ratings of 1-6/10 really need too open their eyes and realize that too much innovation could change the game entirely. Halo 3 has innovation (equipment, nicely tweaked control scheme, Forge, Saved Films) but it doesn't go over the limit that many people are expecting it to, so it still feels I can't believe all of the negative reviews I'm seeing. Those people who are giving ratings of 1-6/10 really need too open their eyes and realize that too much innovation could change the game entirely. Halo 3 has innovation (equipment, nicely tweaked control scheme, Forge, Saved Films) but it doesn't go over the limit that many people are expecting it to, so it still feels like Halo. If you feel it was overhyped, blame yourself for expecting the hand of god to come down and make Halo 3 the perfect game. The Single Player/Co-Op campaign is somewhat short, but far more spectacular than a game like Gears of War's even shorter and less exciting campaign. Playing 4 man Co-Op over Xbox Live, a feature that GoW left out, is the best Co-Op gets, especially on the Legendary difficulty. In fact, the only issue I have is that the dialogue from characters is sometimes so low that you have to turn up your TV a bit during cutscenes. Not a big deal. Multiplayer is nearly flawless in my opinion. There are so many different game modes to choose from, in addition to being able to create your own and download other people's game modes and maps. I've noticed that a majority people are sticking to the "Golden Three things of Halo"(Weapon, melee, grenades)in conjunction with the Assault Rifle, which can make the game a bit repetitive at times. The solution? Turn Assault RIfles off. Turn anything you want off. Make it a rockets match with low gravity on your version of High Ground loaded with fusion cores. Customize anything you want to. This is perhaps Halo 3's biggest innovation. Halo 3's graphics are not bad either. Granted, GoW's textures beat out Halo 3 here, but when you consider how much of a technological advancement the Unreal Engine 3 was in GoW and that Halo 3 does not have that engine, Halo 3's graphics are quite remarkable, especially on an HDTV. Marty O' Donnell's composition is as amazing as in the first two games, and it expectedly adds depth and complexity to the game's single player missions. Gameplay is extrordinary, as is the AI. All in all, I'd ask that you actually play ALL parts of the game (that includes the multiplayer unlike most reviews I've seen here) before you write a 5/10 review because "Halo 3's storyline was too short!" Oh, and if you haven't played any of the game at all and you're trying to write a review to bash it, go away. Expand

The MP is the best console has ever seen. What bugs me is what people are saying about the graphics...what game are you looking at? Its Halo in HD with great textures and effects, with levels and enemies Halo 3 is the best FPS bar none. What other game can offer the mix of strategy and fun that Halo brings. The most overhyped game of all time, but arguably the best game of all time. Pros: Great gameplay, forge, real-time level editor, saved replays with freemoving camera, tons of vehichles and guns, online is awesome, and very good story. Cons: Most equipment besides the regenerater and bubble shield is useless. Umm.... I guess that's it.

It's an adequate fps. Level padding shows poor design though and the storytelling resulted down to being very simple. Not the best example to show for a top class FPS but a nice example that simplicity can still manage to be fun.

Good game, but nothing really original in the series. There is no story at the beginning and the level design is slightly repetitive. However, combat is as polished as in previous titles. Too much hype, I guess.

Why does a game that is just a complete rehash of previous installments with a couple extra doo-dads even worth playing? Not innovative, sorry excuse for a story, and mediocre single player at best. Sure, the multiplayer is great, but it does not make up for its short comings. The reviews this game is getting are obviously just to keep advertising revenue from Microsoft.

I just don't quite understand how this game is getting 100& scores. No game is that good. At the end of the day, all it is is more Halo. That may be exactly what you are looking for, however, most gamers would be much better served saving their money and just renting this game.

Why not just call the game Halo Live, because they get the single player campaign out of the way so quickly, the only value in this game is on Live. Single player campaign very disappointing, especially when compared to the graphics, art, innovation, and storyline of Bioshock. Bungie hasn't moved forward since Halo 1. Not a bad game, just over familiar to the point of boredom. Expand

This game is abundantly awesome. Great graphics, tons of features - only snag is that campaign just doesn't compare to the first.

This game is fantastic end of story, the single player campaign is fun, the gameplay is tight and the AI and graphics a definitely improved. Beyond all of that the multi-player is amazing, Forge is a great and Inovative addition and being able to record your entire battle, play it back from any angle and edit it to your liking... give me the name of 1 other game that does that. When reading these bashing comments and ratings below 5 or 6, I can't think why people are so small minded and build up so big expectations that no game can fulfill. Yes, the game feels a bit oudated but in the otherhand it's exactly how a Halo game should feel like....I'm sure if Halo 3 would've been a revolutionary 3rd person shooter, with slo-mo (bullet-time) effects, with few different endings and moral choices Master Chief should make....I'm sure these people would be dissapointed anyways, because it wouldn't feel like Halo. Well, for my part, I'm not dissapointed in any ways, because I didn't have any expectations as I didn't like Halo 2 so much but loved Halo 1. The graphics are great, the world is vivid and living with many many small details that makes me almost gasp in aww. As for gameplay, it's almost exactly like Halo 1 and 2, with some tweeks....yes it feels a bit outdated compared to other 3rd generation fps's, like Rainbow Six Las Vegas or Bioshock...but come on, it's Halo! Every xbox gamer propably have the controls in their marrow and can pick up this game and get shooting and theres nothing that you wont love in this ride that ends one of the best trilogies and game-series of all time. ´ Why 8 and not 9 or 10? Even if I do like and love Halo 3, all it's ascpects and especially the new Forge mutliplayer mode, I still have to compare Halo 3 to other 3rd generation shooters and as Rainbow Six Las Vegas and Bioshock and now Call of Duty 4 Beta really blew my mind away, Halo 3 really couldn't stand to it's competition. Halo 3 is more than the sum of it's parts, it's the conclusion of an epic and all really need to take this ride and see this game-series to the end. Short review: Gameplay: 8 Story: 8 Graphics: 10 Soundeffects: 8 Music: 10 (yes I love Halo soundtracks) Replayability: 9 Multiplayer: 7 Pros + It's Halo + Replayability + Controls and gameplay -> 6 years of tweeking and polisihing, really can't go wrong + Soundtrack + Lots of multiplayer modes + Campaign co-op up to 4 players Cons - Gameplay, feels a bit outdated. - Sounds in general. - Weapons, even if balanced and there's alot to choose from, they don't have the oomph-effect and feel unpowered. - Multiplayer bunnyhoppers. Awesome game that pulls together all the elements that have made this a great series and perfects them. I wouldn't read too much into 1/10's from people who've probably never owned a 360 let alone played this. The console wars are alive and well sadly.

My real vote is actually an 8, but I give it a 2 to counteract the fanboys who say stuff like "HALO 3 ROCKS. 10".

Halo 2 did such a great job introducing new elements eg dual-wield, cloak armor, play as arbiter, prophets, brutes, drones, very good twist on storyline and managed to let you relive the "wow" feeling of the 1st one. Halo 3 - graphical leap isn't what it should have

Halo 3 - graphical leap isn't what it should have been, considering 360. New gameplay elements like bubble shield etc are under-utilized (vehicles should bounce off), way fewer movies that either filled narrative gaps or added immersion. Last level = very fun, but identical to Halo 1's last level which was fun.

Bottom line : What did Bungie spend 3 years doing, honestly?

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.
  3. 100
It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].
