Boasting massive, diverse maps, a riveting campaign, incredible interactive landscapes and unparalleled realism, Battlefield 3 trumps all 2011 shooters in overall quality, including the highly anticipated Modern Warfare 3.

The servers really need work. And also they need to patch a few things. But overall this is one the best games I've ever played. Putting an 8 now just because of the few bugs but I would give it a 9 or higher if they patch them up

But it's a step in the right direction. I have not had much time to play the campaign so I'm going to not comment on it, but let's face facts. Call of Duty is not a heavy hitter because of campaign. It's mainly multiplayer that will decide what game is played more. I'm not going to talk much about Call of Duty and from what I have played it's about average. The multiplayer feels very uninspired, I feel they have been milking the same cow from Modern Warfare. The last game I played was Modern Warfare 2, and it felt the same, but less.... fun? I was a huge fan of Modern Warfare, let me say, and I played it to death. I never bought Black Ops and have never heard any great praise for it. But this is a Battlefield review, so let's move on. When I heard about Battlefield for the first time, I was sitting in a Modern Warfare game, and my friend in the party was giving major acclaim to Battlefield Bad Company 2. I said "Meh." and moved on. After awhile I bought Bad Company 2. And I fell in love. With multiplayer. The campaign was hard to get into, but I was playing live so I didn't care. When Battlefield 3 came out, all of the signs of a fan-boy came out. But I'm not writing it like that. I know it has flaws. So my first impression while playing after the first day I had it was good. It had the Battlefield feel to it, it was very beautiful. The controls felt smooth, not as hectic and jerky as Call of Duty, but still fast paced in it's own special way. I played with my friend and we would talk and make strategy. It was a great time. But I have a beef with this game. Two of the classes are very over powered. Support and Engineer. RPGs flying around my head constantly is very annoying. And when they stand over a ammo drop, hey look.... unlimited rockets flying around. Not fun. I love the game, but sometimes I feel encumbered by reaction times. There is also way to much dead space in the maps. It works for the PC because of the ability of more players in a match, but not here. Once you get into the action though, you feel that sense of urgency. Al the lighting effects add to the feel, and it makes you feel immersed into the game. It has it's ups and downs. I love this game, but it gets on my nerves sometimes. Expand

Battlefield 3 probably deserves this higher rating because it is something different than what the COD people have been repackaging every year.

The single player is only so-so, battlelog/matchmaking is frustrating (as is almost any system outside Xbox Live, why the hell do they do this?, Why can't I just play against my friends?), and the idea that secondary users will need to purchase an online pass is just another way of ruining its resale value.

Shame on both EA and Activision for trying to squeeze even more money out of consumers.

The highlights of the game occur when you are in a squad of people who are all talking to each other as you move across a map- in my case we took cover in a concrete building only to have a tank burst through the wall. We scattered, shouting "TANK", as the world exploded in shattered concrete and rebar around us. Those moments make the game worth the score alone.

The downside is that new players will find themselves staring into the dark, or into rubble-strewn streets, through iron sites while veterans are peering back through a bipod-stabilized, thermal-vision rifle with a heavy barrel. You'll hop in a tank to rumble across a battlefield with your basic canon as a tank on the other side of the map is firing image-enhanced guided munitions on you. There's a sense of unfairness about it.

The campaign plot is not so good but the Multiplayer section is definitely awesome. But I think EA can build a training scene for noobs so they know how to use those jet fighters and vehicles instead of wasting those tactical advantages like crap.

Frostbite 2 - Huge leap on the graphics effects. EA finally ditched Windows XP/DirectX 9 support, I'd say this is very brave and great act.

DICE put forth a great effort for this title. I will start off by saying that this title has been riddled with issues since launch. Issues with multiplayer have been rampant, from servers being down, to voice chat on PS3 being choppy, etc. The takeway from these issues however is the fact that despite how frustrating they can be, I simply cannot justify putting the game down. Issues with multiplayer have been rampant, from servers being down, to voice chat on PS3 being choppy, etc. The takeway from these issues however is the fact that despite how frustrating they can be, I simply cannot justify putting the game down. The graphics look a lot better and brighter, while at the same time the darks are a lot darker and ominous. There is so much depth and customization involved in the multiplayer that the game is hard to put down. Do you feel like sniping, healing? Perhaps a tank is more your style, or a jet, or a helicopter? Grab a gunner seat if you can't pilot. Or perhaps you want to boogie around the landscape with little more than 4 wheels and a prayer. Got that too. The real value in Battlefield is that there are so many strategies and ways to approach a specific map or firefight, and all of them are pretty damned fun. I have no tried single player yet, but I have never cared about single player in any Battlefield game. To me, it simply goes against what Battlefield began as; a great multiplayer experience that allows you to conduct what is arguably the closest demonstration of a war scenario to date. Finally, does it stack up with Modern Warfare 3? I don't know, it depends on how much you like Modern Warfare 2, because that is all that 3 is. Developer DICE rolled the dice with this game, and overall I think time will show they chose wisely with this endeavor. Expand

The coop can be beaten in 2 hours on the hardest difficulty. There was really no story to it, but it was fun to play with a friend. The online like i said earlier is great. I have brought MW and the prestige editions for MW2 and Black Ops and loved Bad Company 2. Now I didn't even show an interest in MW3 I may even end up buying it later on down the track just for the single-player because I got sick of playing MW2 and Black Ops online just to get quick scoped all the time or the guys who are in a party just go on different teams and just keep killing one guy for the kill streaks. Now I brought BF3 when it was released and I have only played the first mission of BF3 because most of my time I've been playing the multiplayer. I believe that the open maps and number of vehicles you can control create many different tactics you can apply to the battlefield and I have even witnessed different tactics used against me. True that the servers were really bad the first week but they worked on them and now it's up and running perfectly! Plus the add-on we get for free (if you purchased the limited edition) which has new vehicles, weapons, and re-created maps from the previous game. Where as and I'm sorry about this but paying 1200 MS points for 4-6 maps as just outrageous and yes I did purchase 1 or 2 of the map packs. If anyone has actually read up to this point I am a casual gamer and love my games, even so much I don't even trade them or resell them but if you are looking for a great multiplayer experience this game is for you, the amount of upgrades for your weapons, even with your level, plus for each vehicle, will just keep you coming back for more. The only thing they really need to work on is an easier way to quit out of a game without waiting for a new game to start. I'll start on campaign, boring if I'm honest, some great levels, some great set pieces, bit too linear, but campaigns usually need to be on shooters, its no ArmA is it! Scenes like thunder run or the first time you walk onto the deck of the aircraft carrier are very "wow this looks awesome" and its moments like that in the campaign that make it look better than its rivals, it plays well and looks good, although nowhere near as good as the pc version, iv installed both the game and texture lack and while impressive its still nowhere near to the pc version, Now the multiplayer, 30fps 720p (just) looks and plays good, its a change of pace to cod adding vehicles etc, but it does little to keep you hooked in and some server issues and lag etc have made some gamers have less than good experiences online, The squad features and clan options are lacking heavilly in a game that is supposed to thrive on team play, the levels although well designed and quite big have little in the way of choke points or areas to hold down with a squad, exept the smaller levels like metro,
Levelling up takes an eternity and can get boring,
The player cap at 24 is a step foreward but surely 32-40 would have been better, mag managed a smooth 256 on mag! Overall the game is let down by slow and boring levelling system, and poor squad and clan settings, a small player count and ea been server hoggers although dedi servers are great, they don't work for xbl! The player count could have been better and they could have done a console based app for battlelog, a great looking and sounding game, but not enough to hook you in unless your already a fan from 2005! At least EA is making an effort to create games that people will actually want to play for an extended period of time (unlike certain other devs). This game isn't the greatest FPS out there, but at least it's not a complete waste of money.

Best multiplayer shooter in the market. Period. The level of detail is brutal. You can use any type of weaponry, destroy buildings and revive your buddy. Teamwork is effective, but in the end is the most realistic military game out there.

By that i mean, they start have you do impossible stuff, stuff that could never happen in real life, and well this really detracts from the Battlefield style. It isn't very long at all and in my opinion isn't to good at all. it has some good aspects like the Fighter mission and the tank mission, but it doesn't give anything new or aww inspiring.

    Multiplayer-
Now onto the good stuff, the reason we Battlefield Fanboys" bought the game....Multiplayer.
The multiplayer in Battlefield 3 brings brings a lot of stuff from Battlefield 2 and BF:BC2 and brings them together. Honestly in my opinion they tried to hard to make this game a COD killer instead of just doing what they do best, again as they did in the campaign, they just made the game a bit to "modern warfare ish" the game play seems a bit smoother than BFBC2 but at the same time they took away from the "everything is destructible" that BFBC2 had. In BFBC2 by the end of a match, the entire map could be destroyed. while here in BF3 in the more urban maps, most of the buildings cant be destroyed, you can destroy walls and parts of the buildings but not the entire building. Vehicular warfare- all of the vehicles work well in this game, They brought back the jets which are very cool to fly, and the choppers have new stuff to use.
instead of blowing up right away now, most vehicles will actually be disabled first then blow up, by this i mean you can disable a tank and it cannot move, but the turret will still be active and can still shoot, or you can take out one of the 2 engines on jets and choppers, which is a very cool added aspect to the game To Sum it up, this game is very good, but could have been so much more.
I mean they did a fine job with this game, but they just Modern Warfared the game a bit to much, and the Maps just don't feel right compared to BFBC2
I would recommend this game to anyone, but if you haven't checked Battlefield Bad Company 2 yet, i would say go for that first because it is a much better game

Second, the gameplay and maps are not designed for so few players. 24 works for some maps, but many feel vast and empty without the full 64 players that they enjoy on the PC. If they're going to release the game on consoles without upping the player number, then the maps need to be changed.

Other than that, it's a phenomenal game. It's a much slower pace and larger scale than Call of Duty, but these are good things if you prefer executing more refined strategies and tactics with your team. The gameplay is far more diverse, both because the maps allow full use of all the classes (snipers actually can behave like snipers), and because the scope and design of the maps encourages shifting tactics.

In the daytime? Really? C'mon with that. Deploying planes.
I'm sorry, but the fact of the matter is that in a conflict no air craft carrier is going to be a couple hundred yards off shore. Planes are deployed from a greater distance. In saying that, I believe that it is unfair that the opposing team can strafe your carrier and destroy planes or helos causing you to die as you spawn in them. They need to either move the planes further out and not allow enemy aircraft the ability to venture that far, or do a patch where they can't destroy planes on the deck or the ground. Sniper rifles
I don't know...if I hit a guy with a high caliber sniper rifle and he continues to run full speed, I'm having a problem with that. I don't believe three bullets to the upper body is what is needed to bring him down. Gotta do better with that. Percentages
I like the fact they let you know how much damage you did to the person that killed you, but when I see the "X" flash three times indicating a hit, him only being at 66% upsets me. I don't care what gun you're using, that is crazy.

The single-player has been improved and the campaign makes a refreshing change after playing the Bad Company series, which I found quite cheesy and gimmicky, now it feels dynamic with impressive 'Call of Duty' style scripted set pieces. The co-op campaign is pretty good also, its different to the main campaign and takes roughly 6 hours to play through. The only bad thing I found about the co op was the helicopter mission. Helicopter piloting on Battlefield has always been hit and miss; it requires a huge amount of coordination and patience, it is also unintuitive and hard to learn. I have played the entire Battlefield series, and never have I felt the need to learn the fly the chopper. I have avoided it at all times. The second multi-player mission is based entirely around the chopper and unlike the spec ops mode in Call of Duty there is no way to select roles, the only way to switch from pilot to gunner is to repeatedly fail or crash on purpose. I could imagine a lot of players giving up at this point which is a shame. I found the multi-player in Bad Company 2 more enjoyable, which had better class balance. Recon (my favorite class) feels underpowered now, they have removed mortar strike, and increased bullet drop on sniper rifles (but guns from other kits have no bullet drop even at max range which means you can make a more effective sniping class from the assault or engineer class by equipping a 6 or 8x combat scope to your rifle/SMG as well as getting a superior load-out to recon). Unlocks are earned on weapons individually instead of on kits, which adds rewards to players who stick to a favorite gun, however casual players who trade up weapons every level will never see the majority of unlocks.
Graphically BF3 is way ahead of the competition. The single player graphics are awesome. The co-op and multi-player models & textures are also very good, however the draw distance could be a bit better, but overall looks great and lag free even on big maps with 20 players.
The sound is good (not quite as good as recent Call of Duty games) and sounds great in 5.1 surround with decent bass, however, menus and loading screens are punctuated with dubstep riffs which I didn't really like.
In terms of value I would say it is roughly the same as Bad Company 2, while you have a new co-op campaign you are now forced to register an online pass, (free at release) priced at 800 Microsoft points (£4.50) which is an unwanted expense for customers borrowing it off a friend or renting the game for the weekend. The store exclusive pre-order DLC content is also a pain in the ass. It's a good deal for stores wanting to shift extra units, but bad for consumers (I ended up buying the game at £44.99 from Gamestation purely for the pre-order DLC whereas the game was £38.99 from Amazon.co.uk with an inferior unlock) who want to access all the content.
The re-playability is OK, the weapon proficiencies, ribbons and awards, and the achievement for max multi-player level will keep completionists red eyed into 2012.

Who decided one day that performing such actions are fun and necessary to core gameplay?). It took but four or five hours for my conquering of BF3's campaign. That's a bad time, even for n64 games. However, the game delivers what it promises with each new installment: a deep multiplayer experience. Though, I would love to see 64 player deathmatches come to my beloved 360. However the game is somewhat limited to what Microsoft can currently offer. Thanks, Bill Gates. Besides that little pipe-dream, the multiplayer is more than solid, and should keep any competitive player happy for a long while. So if the multiplayer is great, why give it an eight (rhymes)? Because I'm a COD fan...kidding, I'm just kidding. I love the fact that the game reaches out to a special group of gamers who are interested in strategy rather than run&gun tactics. However, I think that the time spent on BF3's campaign mode could have been used to create an even better online experience. The only negative views the critics had to offer was that BF3's campaign sucked. I guarantee that the game would have gotten higher ratings across the board if the campaign didn't exist. It only served to show a chink in the armor.
If you love games like Bioshock for narrative purposes only, sit this one out. But if you are a FPS fan looking for some deep competition (current owners of BF3, I was the guy you tromped several times) pick this one up! It comes in 2 disc format, one for campaign and one for online matches. So basically, for $60 you can play BF3 online weekdays and play Frisbee with the dog on weekends. BOOM. Everyone is happy!

    2. This game was over hyped. Again, THIS IS A VERY GOOD GAME PLEASE DON'T KILL MY FAMILY, FAN BOYS. Although the multiplayer game play is solid and the graphics/ physics are stellar, the game play is just too slow and repetitive for many gamers. Some of Battlefield's elements act as a double edged sword, such as destruction, which although is freeking awesome, makes many maps feel the same, taking away variation from the game. In addition, the main game play formula just doesn't really appeal to the average casual gamer. That being said, this game is still great and will be a staple for hardcore gamers, and for casual gamers, this will be a great game to go to a few times a week. I definitely recommend buying this if you have the money. If you don't have the money, don't feel obliged to get it.

First off, multiplayer is massively addicting and satisfying. It is without a doubt one of the best looking games I've played in a while. I found the multiplayer to be a great improvement over Bad Company 2, with added in-depth customization, unlockables, jets and many other additions. The new maps also look beautiful, and feature a lot of interesting terrain. The destruction of terrain at times seems to be a step back from BFBC2, and there are a few balance issues, however DICE has been working to correct them. There is also the occasional glitch, but not enough to detract from the captivating gameplay that Battlefield 3's multiplayer offers.

For the campaign, the game is sub-par. It features an intestesting story, however it is somewhat poorly-executed. Plentiful quicktime events plague the game, as well as AI that is at times unfair and unfun to play against. I was disappointed that there was barely any use of vehicles, as for me that is a strong point in Battlefield's trademarked gameplay. On the plus, the campaign looks absolutely stunning with some impressive visuals thanks to a brand new graphics engine.

Overall, BF3 is a great multiplayer offering and how I feel true war-FPS multiplayer SHOULD be played. The campaign is a let-down, but don't let that keep you from buying this game. Totally worth it!

Most people tend to take a liking to a certain class, but I recommend using all 4. The maps are HUGE. You'll spend half the time traveling across a huge landscape in one of BF3's many vehicles. They other half you spend strategically killing opponents. And I mean strategically. You will have to adjust if you come from Run and Gun shooters. BF3 also adds a Cooperative mode, where you and one friend can team up on AI enemies. Its fun, although I wish there was more than 6 missions. Campaign, ah Campaign. Im not really sure how to react to this, considering there isnt really a story. Its more like several missions with a short 5min cutscene. In fact there isnt even an ending to the Campaign, it just cuts to black with no conclusion. Aside from this BF3 is a great Multiplayer game, worth the $60. Expand

This game is not abstinent of flaws after setting aside the online passcode, however:

-When facing the sun, an almost blinding hexagon covers a good third of your screen.
-When respawning, you stare at a black screen for .5 seconds despite actually have already spawned (this is evident, because when looking at the black screen you can move your character around).
-The range of a gun is determined by the scope rather than by the gun itself.
-People look like the environment from far away.
    -The minimap can get cluttered.
-The screen goes blurry when an explosion occurs near you, despite no damage being taken.

Please keep in mind the campaign was an afterthought in this game. The Battlefield series never -HAD- campaigns until Bad Company One, and DICE only added them to give the series extra value (ie, no one would pay 60$ for a console game if it was strictly multiplayer).

The Frostbite 2 engine lends itself for beautiful graphics, awesome physics and intense gameplay; whereas Call of Duty has been using the same engine since CoD4, and as such there is limited things that Infinity Ward can hope to accomplish.

The class gameplay of Battlefield is a staple and illustrious facet of the series. Having the assault, medic, engineer and recon classes makes it virtually mandatory for a team to work together to win, rather than playing a round as a lone-wolf doing as you please like in other FPS'. If you do not work together, you will lose. PERIOD.

In conclusion, Battlefield 3 has some definite flaws and is definitely not the best installment in the series. However, compared to other multiplayer FPS released this year, it is probably the most versatile and best.

Battlefield 3 had arrived a few months back made by DICE the founders and the creators of the popular Battlefield series. (I am reviewing this with the Back to Karkand DLC). (I am reviewing this with the Back to Karkand DLC). The single player is just like Black Ops' which is not necessarily a bad thing but it would of been nice if DICE had taken it from a different perspective other than an interrogation room having flashbacks to the time he was in the army. Other than the disappointing Single Player there comes the coop, which can be played up to 2 players. I wish you could play with more than 2 people but it's still fun nevertheless. You can play a variety of different missions from someone flying a helicopter to your standard reach 'Checkpoint A' kind of modes, it's a nice little addition but will grow to get quite boring at times, however if you need some skills that need improving then the coop is a good place to start. The main part of the game is from the multiplayer which is a blast! I played days upon days of the multiplayer and is still not that tiring and not at all tedious. Each match is different every time you play and each weapon feels unique unlike MW3 (I WILL NOT BE COMPARING THE 2). You need to get the DLC (Back to Karkand) to experience Battlefield 3 to it's full potential as the maps are better than the ones on the disc, however the maps on the disc are still varied and have different outcomes everytime you play. The vehicles feel just like any Battlefield game, the tanks are more like Bad Company 2 but that's still not bad considering the tanks in Bad Company 2 were perfect in my opinion and in Battlefield 3 that's no different. The jets are easy to fly but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're new to flying then it's easy to pick up although you have to unlock the missiles etc. The levelling system is pretty bare bones, it goes like this; you get points by doing the objectives, getting kills or assisting in some way; that then goes towards your rank, get enough points you rank up and giving the things you unlocked for that level. It's not a bad thing but I wish it was more in depth than it is at the moment. The verdict: The multiplayer saves it from being worse than MW3 (Not comparing) and is a true sequel to Battlefield 2; prepare yourselves Battlefield fans, you don't want to miss this. Expand

So where does the campaign go then? Well it is the classic hunt for nukes before time comes out and get through the sub plots as they unfold. The story is bad, the acting, the feel, the battling and support is really, really good. Soldiers react the way you want them to, and the enemy dies the way they would in real life. Not the duct tape enemies like in the Call of Duty series but legitimately difficult enemies that will kill you with melee if you stray too close. This helps with the hyper-realism that the game tries to accomplish and indeed does. The frostbite 2 engine developed by Dice raises the bar for graphics exponentially. The console version looks amazing but the PC version is beyond comparison. Words cannot describe the complexity of even the hand models in the PC version, if you have the means then that is the version to buy. Back to the campaign; the best part about it is not the way enemies die, the story, r even the look of the game but your companions and how they react and interact with you and the environment. This is not a lone wolf shooter; it is very much based on coordination with large and overwhelming forces. My only complaint about multiplayer is the servers. Why would you rent out servers? No longer can I do a quick match, I have to find a dice hosted server. People rent servers and make a bunch of stupid rules, and it just isn't as fun. This is clearly an ploy by EA to make more money. The party system is also pretty bad. None of these things actually really affect the multiplayer though. BF3 Has the best multiplayer I have ever seen.

The Battlefield series is known for multiplayer matches at lightning speed. And that`s exactly where Battlefield 3 can score. Even more, it surpasses its predecessors nearly in every point. The single player missions are worth a look too. If you like war games, you should buy this immediately. You won`t regret it!

Really great game. This is when BF multiplayer really started to find it's footing and become legendary imo. Wouldn't rate it as highly as Bad Company 2 even though there are very obvious improvements in the gameplay. But storywise, it's just a bit of a noticeable step down for me.

If you're looking for a great single player campaign you're out of luck, rent BF3 or pick it up in the bargain bin. If you're looking for the best online multiplayer action then BF3 is your game hands down.

While Battlefield 3 was aiming to be the biggest name this holiday season, and while it has made strides towards knocking off Modern Warfare 3, it misses the mark. That's not to say it is a bad game, it's a very good one, but the polish and excitement that is found on the Call of Duty series feels missing here. Still, there are much worse games you could end up with this holiday season, and the competition between the two series should heat up significantly in the next few years.

This experience alone sums up what Battlefield 3 is about. It isn't a John Rambo run and gun shooter and it shouldn't really be compared to MW3 in terms of how you play it. For players to truly understand the Battlefield experience you need to embrace the teamwork by joining a squad and calling out your spotted enemies, as after all, sometimes you also need your back covered too.
