It was a perfect game for me. I also enjoyed the story and the feeling of soaring through the sky during the journey. However, the only disappointment was the frame drops due to the performance limitations of the Nintendo Switch hardware.

Firstly, let me note that I am a nintendo fanboy and zelda fanboy and have been for 27 years. Tears of the Kingdom is a great game but by no means perfect and has plenty of flaws that stops it from being truly a game I would call the greatest of the Zelda franchise, as I will outline below (no spoilers). To anyone saying the game is just a copy and paste of breath of the wild, sure, it kinda is but enough new things were added and the game was polished enough to make it worth being called a new game. Also, with two additional maps added, followers, weapon repair system and new powers, the game is a truly different game built upon what BOTW made and that is what makes it great; BOTW was amazing so why try to fix something not broken. Pokemon learned that a long time ago. Overall, it is what I expect from a Zelda game, top quality game play, a map filled with so much to do I get lost in it and millions of ways to slay Bokoblins. Now, to anyone saying it is a perfect game and is best ever made and we must worship the ground Nintendo walks on due to this; not by a long shot. The game is great but does not have the same shock factor that BOTW had 7 years ago. Also, lets be honest, the graphics are subpar for this day and age, especially after just finishing the visual masterpiece that was GOWR but it still has that Zelda charm that breath of the wild created and Hyrule is beautiful enough that it is easy to look past the visual flaws but that is more a Switch problem than Zelda problem; team worked with what they had. Also, I do think they could have put more effort into the surface map; it really is just a bit too similar to BOTW to count for 7 years of production time. I do feel a lot of things have been polished up and this is the direction future zelda games are going and I am fine with that. Overall, the game is great; I got the same feeling as when I play Skyrim. It is a world I can just get lost in and no matter what direction I go in, there is always something to find. The game was certainly not worth being a 70 dollar game, that was just a bit of greed on Nintendo's part and makes me disappointed. Still, I love the game and will be putting in likely hundreds of hours to match my BOTW playtime. It is defiantly a good game to play if you are looking for a world to just get lost in and not expecting much in terms of story just like BOTW. (Its a zelda game, the story is never the point). Also, Rehydrated Ganon. If you did not like BOTW, you won't like this. If you are not a fan of big open worlds with total freedom and graphics from the 2017's, you won't like this. If you are someone who hates nintendo, you won't like this. If you are someone who hates dealing with breaking weapons, dark souls level difficulty in some fights and having to actually use your head to solve puzzles (or just use youtube) you won't like this. This game is not a fun hack and slash but an open world exploration with difficult combat, lots of things to micromanage and a huge world to get lost in. If you are looking to just lose a few hundred hours of your life, go for it. Still not worth 70 dollars though. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom took everything about its predecessor and flipped it on its head. Everything from the music, to the game play mechanics have been increased ten fold. If you like your hand being held for the entirety of a game, this game is not for you. Links four main abilities some would call gimmicky, but I would call them a unique set of powers that allow the players to traverse the expanded world of Hyrule however they imagine. Although you no longer have the champions abilities from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, you’re still given all the tools necessary to complete any challenge thrown your way. That’s what makes this game so amazing. You have to go out of your way to reap what you sow. There is no other way around it. This game is very rewarding for your hard work. When it came to building vehicles, it was a bit clunky at first but the more you practice the more you get the hang of it. The frame rate in this game can drop at times, but it’s so amusing it’s forgivable. The story through memories was a bit of a let down I must say. I was really hoping they’d deviate from its previous title in order to keep things fresh. I would say the same about its tutorial, seeing as you start with obtaining Link’s 4 abilities through shrines. Although it’s the same engine, map, mechanics, and characters, it’s approach to the overall open world story telling was a bit too similar to Breath of The Wild. These are the only small complaints I had of the game as I was too distracted by having a jolly good time. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom took the foundation of Breath of The Wild and built upon it. That’s what makes a direct sequel work really well in my opinion. Keeping things similar enough but not too close is a hard line to walk and I think the developers did a fantastic job at towing it. Overall the game is rewarding despite its small similarities from its previous title and will keep you thinking hard the entire way. Expand

Integrated with fun side quests and plenty of spaces to explore. Brand new customized building mechanics all give returning players a good refresh on what made the game good in 2018.

At the same time it also carries most of the negatives form its predecessor. Soulless openworld, lack of incentives to explore, combat starts fun but parry is op, rewards are either breakable common gear or stamina and HP from temples, monster variety is just as terrible, story is almost non existent, music is questionable...

If you were awed by BOTW, you would be awed by this game. But if you weren't convinced by BOTW or if you are like me who never finished the game despite multiples tries. You will definitely question what does make this game fun.

Tears of the Kingdom takes the concepts laid out by Breath of the Wild and brings them to a fine polish.

The map has been altered slightly and events have shifted enough to properly reflect the passage of time. Despite the surface layer having the same base geography, the new additions of landmarks and the completely different mechanics change the nature of traversing the world entirely. I know where various specific places are on the map, but getting to them isn't the same as it was. It is a whole different challenge, one that I relish. The addition of various caves around the map is a nice little distraction. There were some incredible surprises inside some of them, and a few that caused me genuine terror I wasn't ready for.

The sky layer is definitely the place where the dev team tested all of the new mechanics behind Link's new abilities. The variety of little puzzles and interactions you can find there are surprising. it is very much reminiscent of the outer lying sky islands of Skyward Sword, but there is far more to do in this game than in that one. There are clearly places you are intended to reach later on in the game, but given enough time and effort, you can reach them at just about any point in the game. I encountered one specific place where there was an enemy that ended me a number of times before I was able to run away. Were I better player I may have stood a chance, though.

The Depths layer offers an experience I haven't encountered before in a Zelda game. It is a challenge to just survive there. I spent a good hour during one session traversing the underground and barely uncovered a fraction of the map, yet the number of things I found to do and enemies to fight caught me off guard, and I was trying to avoid most of them. There are things that will jump out at you from any corner available down there, even from the ground beneath your feet. I also met a face I wasn't expecting down there, but was very glad to see again.

The dungeons of this game are leagues ahead of those found in Breath of the Wild. The challenges offered by them force you to think about what you're doing. Some solutions where fairly straight forward in hindsight, but coming to those conclusions in the first place was a delight. The bosses are given a spectacular presentation, and offer just the right level of challenge. I felt good after completing them.

This game is not perfect. While I haven't encountered any graphical or framerate issues, and don't think I've encountered any bugs, there is a certain tedium to equipment management that is less enjoyable.

Having said that, I do enjoy finding new pieces of things to attach to other tools I've collected to create new and interesting tools. There's one specific item dropped by a specific type of world boss that I've already taken a liking to and regularly go back to obtain for my weapons. You are also still required to have a great variety of tools on you at any given time if you want to be thorough in your exploration. I've discovered a number of tools already that are a must have for exploring certain sections of the map.

The new mechanics of this game are a genuine joy to experiment with. I've been thoroughly enjoying testing the limits of what the abilities can do. There are a number of things that can be done in this game which were simply not possible or were otherwise too complex for those like myself to do in the previous title, but the new mechanics have brought forth numerous new possibilities for interaction with the engine. There are some times when I find myself missing the powers of the prior game, but those times are few and far between, and that does not detract from the experience.

If you enjoyed Breath of the Wild, you will enjoy this game. If you haven't played Breath of the Wild, I highly encourage you to do so before picking this game up. The experience is not the same.

All of these combine to make Tears of the Kingdom immediately one of the most amazing games I've ever played.

Unfortunately, on its native hardware there are plenty of framedrops during normal gameplay and people used to 4k 60fps resolution will be disappointed. Performance is the only reason I won't give TotK a 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had the honor to receive (certainly by mistake), the game in advance. This game is in the perfect continuity of its predecessor, although it has kept some defects. Let's start with the latter.
One of the main flaws that I decided to mention for this review is the dungeons. This is a point where I expected an evolution from Nintendo with a new way of conceiving them. In spite of these expectations from me and also from the players, I still find them too close to what was done in Breath of the Wild, that is to say structures with 4 or 5 points to activate in order to reach the boss. In the previous Zelda games, each dungeon varied and was solved in a different way, which brought a great originality to each of them. Here, the only nice thing about the dungeons is the environment that varies each time and the theme of each of them, involving in this the bosses for which Nintendo has made an effort. In short, Nintendo didn't put as much effort into the construction of the dungeons as one would expect, and the way of solving them would be different from BOTW.
Other minor technical flaws including slowdowns (probably because I only had access to 1.0.0 during my session) are present and will require a patch but did not spoil my gaming experience.
As for the qualities of this Zelda, as usual in the games of this series, Nintedo has provided us with a game of very high quality, putting even its predecessor at the rank of prototype despite the revolution it brought. The narration is much better with an excellent scenario. On this point, Nintendo has listened very well to the players. I was also satisfied with the soundtrack, with the reworking of some of the themes you could hear in BOTW. The construction system is very well integrated in the game and is well brought in the story (a whole tutorial area is dedicated to the mastery of it), the new powers are also excellent. Nintendo has, on this point, kept the best of BOTW to make something much more advanced, which gives a gameplay that can vary to the extreme.

In short, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is a game that I recommend to those who are looking for an excellent game that pushes its concept to the end. I could talk about many other qualities but not all of them come to mind as I write.

It’s not a 10, I didn’t even really think it was a 9 at first, I was hovering at a 5 at best when I started (excluding the initial bit with Zelda WHICH IS AWESOME!) but it grows on you once it stops holding your hand and just lets you go wild and explore, a bit like BOTW (which I similarly hated when I first started playing).

I will sink many an hour into this game I think. I might even think it’s a 10 when I get a bit more into it, as I did with BOTW

Me encantó.

Best game for me, a game with infinite possibilities. As Aonuma san said, this game makes you think "If you do that, then this could work, too!" and those things actually work.

    The Good:
-the freedom in this game is crazy, there is no location that the game forces you to go.
and the traveling system is way more easy and more fun by using the tower.
-beautiful and visible map. It is crazy that when you are up in the sky you can see all of sky islands and also the surface. It is wild to think about that this little device can load all of them in real time.
-creative mechanics. There are so many things to do with materials, Zonai gears, and your ultra hand.
Just playing with your gear and not continuing the story is also fun way to enjoy.
    -artistic designs
-very rewarding combat system -flurry rush, parry, making robots to destroy enemies.etc-
-various ways to play. Especially in the shrine, there are so many unique ways to solve things.

    The bad:
-when you use ultrahand, the frame drops -didn't bother me-
-Underground feels a little bit empty
-If you didn't like Botw, then you will not like it obviously
-a bit of potato display quality in the first area -where it has a lot of Ginkgo-
    - it can be confusing to press buttons cause there are kind of complicated.

This game is very good though I wish I could give it a 10 I want to realistically rate this game so I don’t send the wrong message. If you enjoyed the shrines and puzzles of the last game then you will most likely enjoy this game. Some complaints I have is mostly technical issues but otherwise there is only one thing I don’t like. The game doesn’t run so well because the switch was pushed to the limit with this game. The only non technical thing I have to complain about is the lack of new things in the over world. Sure there are new towns but I wished some areas geographically changed a little bit, but not too much to the point that the over world is unrecognizable.Yes, I do think it was worth the hype but, there are some things they could have done better. If you read this all I thank you for seeing my opinion. But in general the game was very good (or at least so far). The abilities were all very fun to play around with (specially fuse and ultra hand) I also liked the more creativity that could be used to build machines so there is always something to do even after you get hundreds of Korok seeds and 100% the game. (Who doesn’t hate Korok seeds) I don’t like Korok seeds because obviously it is a pain to get 999 of them when they are so cleverly hidden.

I finished the game, and the final boss against Demon King Ganondorf felt actually challenging. He could dodge my flurry rushes! When you first see him become the Demon King, and the health at goes up, it’s intimidating, but then it KEEPS GOING and almost goes off the screen. And after the long and hard battle, he throws away everything and eats his tear to become the Demon Dragon, which turns into an epic fight on the back of the Light Dragon facing off against the Demon Dragon.

I bought Breath of the Wild on release day for my brand new Nintendo Switch, which I had purchased with my student loan instead of spending money on less important things, like food. I spent many nights eating my 40-pack of Nigerian instant ramen that was supposed to last me until the next semester, questing around Hyrule.

I had my problems with the game. Firstly, the weapon durability was far too punishing for the lack of weapons in the game. To compound this difficulty, it was far too convoluted to expand your inventory to ensure you always had an ace up your sleeve in the form of a powerful weapon to dispatch tough foes. Obtaining the Master Sword also alleviated this hurdle. Getting around Hyrule could sometimes be a pain without a fully upgraded stamina bar, and the rain would hinder all progress for a while as Link slid off the side of mountains. Most of all, for a place as big as Hyrule, it just felt empty.

Tears of the Kingdom has addressed all these issues in a very unique way. The new "fuse" ability allows you to boost less powerful weapons to aid you in times of need. While I would have liked a boost in durability, knowing you can create your own lethal weapon out of something as brittle as a stick really alleviates some anxiety. "Recall" and "ascend" can help you move around the map when traditional methods are not available. But the most important change is Hyrule itself.

Rather than just throwing a bunch of NPCs across the world, Nintendo opted to create sky islands. This reminds me very much of Skyward Sword, which is a detriment to the game, as vocal critics have been using this fact as ammunition to suggest this is a cash grab from Nintendo.

The main difference between Skyward Sword and Tears of the Kingdom is the traversal of these islands. Tears of the Kingdom's island hopping feels a lot slower than hopping on a Loftwing and gliding to the next location. Some thought has to be put into moving from island to island. You can skydive if you believe you have the speed and stamina to make it to the next island, or you can use an Ultrahand to climb aboard a Zonai contraption to take you there. One of my favourite things about the flying contraptions you can make with the Zonai devices is how uncontrollable they are. I thought Loftwings were tricky to manoeuvre, but the knife-edge nature of the DIY vehicles really makes you think and perfect your designs. But the main attraction is The Depths...

Going to The Depths for the first time made me reminisce about journeying down the Great Hollow for the first time and seeing an ancient, barren land. The Depths are expansive, as big as Hyrule itself. I have yet to know exactly what this place is, but this space alone fully justifies the £70 cut-and-epaste job. However, it also reveals a bigger problem.

The Switch came out in 2017 with Breath of the Wild as a launch title. It has taken 6 years to revisit this incarnation of Hyrule. Typically, each console gets 2 original Zelda games (minus the Wii U, which we should try to forget about...), so this is theoretically the last one for the Switch. So far, a new Zelda game has been released on a 2-year cycle since 2017, so we can expect 1 or 2 GameCube remakes in the pipeline.

The issue is that Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel, and Nintendo have outdone themselves. The Switch is struggling to run this latest instalment. The Switch is donning 2015 hardware in a 60 FPS standard world. Unfortunately for Nintendo, this game is both their magnum opus, and their most successful home console's death rattle. In order to meet this high standard they have set themselves, they will need a new console to drive Link's next chapter.

If it takes them another 6 years to make a Zelda game, and a Zelda game is likely to be a launch title for their next console, we can expect an iteration of the Switch in 2029, with the possibility of a Switch Pro in 2024. Hey, at least we are probably getting Twilight Princess...

Thank you Nintendo, this is the Switch's Swan Song.

The major problem is how you can cheese almost every puzzle with those creations, no joke, if you are outside a shrine challenge you can create an huge bridge and cross a map section skipping like 20 minutes of gameplay. Specially on temples. Like seriously, did someone tested this? you can pass the fire temple without doing almost no puzzles

After putting a ton of hours into BOTW I was skeptical this game could eclipse the feeling of playing BOTW once again, but it has. BOTW feels like a blueprint to what this game is. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Summary: Open World Action Adventure starring Zelda, Link, and their friends and foes. It's basically BOTW II, with more areas to explore, side activities to do, and new abilities to play with. Most of all, its solid gameplay intertwined with its charm make it a very unforgettable experience that is a lot of fun.

    The Good:

If you felt there wasn't a ton of stuff to do in BOTW, you certainly won't get that feeling in TOTK. You can spend somewhere between 150 and 200 hours if you choose to 100% the game. Even outside of all the things that get you to that 100%, there are just more NPCs walking around, enemy encampments scattered about, and areas to explore in the name of caves introduced to the main world, the sky islands, and the Depths, which is like an "upside down" pitch-dark world that is a mirror of the main overworld you are used to from BOTW.

The combat is the same from BOTW, so if you liked it there you will like it here. If you haven't played BOTW, it's very reminiscent to other 3rd person action games where you lock onto targets and dodge around and get your hits in when you can (which, you can often as the game is not very difficult). What is more interesting however in TOTK, is the ability to fuse things to your weapons and shields. This helps spice up combat a bit as you can attach anything you want to a weapon or shield which will give it different properties. As you progress the main story, you get these spirit followers that will follow you around and help you fight stuff which helps speed up clearing big enemy encampments as well.

One the biggest features of the game is the ability to build things using the materials fusing ability (called ultra hand, different from the ability that you use to fuse stuff to weapons). This is used in the main story, in side quests, and in figuring out most puzzles. However, the most interesting part to a lot of players is probably how you can use it to build traps, fighting contraptions, vehicles of different kinds: whatever you can think of really. This wasn't really something that I was interested in doing, but overall I enjoyed doing the quests and side stuff that required building.

    The Bad:

The story is like a 4 out of 10. Its pretty basic, and outside of the twist (which I won't spoil but you probably know what it is anyway from the Internet) it just isn't very interesting and it mostly just keeps repeating the same points throughout the whole thing. I understand its Nintendo and they probably want to appeal to the widest audience as possible, but I don't think kids would really care if they don't understand the story because they probably just want to fight stuff and build silly things with ultra hand. So, that being said it would have served the game better to have a better written story.

The depths and sky areas are kinda a bummer. The sky area is not very big at all and consists of a bunch of small to medium sized islands, and just feels big at first because of how spread out it is. If you put all the sky areas together instead of spread out over the map like they are, it would probably be the size of one of the biomes, like gerudo desert or death mountain. The depths is a mirror of the normal world above, so where there is a valley in the normal world, thats a mountain in the depths. That in itself is kind of a bummer, but more so the fact that there is hardly any lore at all outside of a couple main quest lines down there, and there are just a bunch of copy-pasted enemies from the normal world down there for the most part.

That leads to the last bad part, the copy-pasting. Its an issue with a lot of Open World games, and TOTK is not much different. A lot of the game is copy-pasted collectible stuff and enemy encampments. If you don't enjoy that kind of content, it is easy to feel like there isn't much enjoyable stuff to actually use the fun abilities and the combat abilities against.

Tears of the Kingdom is a great sequel to Breath of the Wild, adding a lot of things, including two whole new layers (or tiers) on the BOTW map. But the game still isn't worth the 70 dollars...

The final boss was an intense and heart-pumping moment with the greatest moments of gaming I have ever seen. The characters are interesting and they each have a different personality. I do appreciate Nintendo taking the time to give each of the probably thousands of characters in the game different text boxes and interesting little bits of details about themselves as well. Link is back with a brand new set of abilities such as Ultrahand which lets you take anything and build something beautiful with it, Fuse which can let fuse your weapons, shields, and arrows with any item in the game, Ascend which can let you go up any solid surface that is above you which is super helpful with navigating the world of Hyrule, and finally Rewind which lets you turn objects back in time so let's say you dropped something by accident off a high cliff. Well, thanks to Rewind if you are fast enough you can rewind it in time, and have come right back at you. There is one other ability that wasn't shown in any trailers so I won't tell you it because that would spoil the game if I did. This game also includes some hidden references to past Zelda games and also tons of other secrets which give this game a bunch of replayability. Sure it may be $70 which is a bit more than the usual switch game I would say it is well worth it. So if you want to buy it and you have money go and get it and you will not regret it at all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely one of the best Zelda games, nevertheless video games, I have ever played. It's an odd situation where I do think this is a better objective experience in most regards when compared to Breath of the Wild- yet, after having played it for 2 and a half months, I can't help but feel like I enjoyed my experience with Breath of the Wild slightly more. For one, despite Tears' strikingly incredible reuse of Breath's Hyrule, I can't help but feel like the initial magic of unfettered exploration from Breath is largely gone. Now, it's undoubtedly true that the advent of the sky, depths, and caves make up for much of the difference. In fact, the opening moments of the game where the sky is first revealed to the player fully DO recapture that magic from Breath for me. Sheer awe.

There's no doubt that Tears is probably Nintendo's single most impressive technical experience to date. The ability to freely move nearly every object in the game, attach them to one another, fuse items to any weapons, AND have all three layers of the map available without any loading screens, WHILE being on a system that is leagues behind other major systems technically??? It is a complete miracle to me that the game isn't constantly breaking. And, yes, while there are definitely moments where the game stutters quite significantly and has minor glitches, I can easily look past all of these things given the circumstances. I can easily see why the game took six years to develop just for the physics system alone.

There are notable ways in which the game has notably improved upon milestones of Breath. For instance, the bosses and enemy variety in Tears are a SIGNIFICANT improvement. In addition to the few enemy templates from Breath, Tears introduces Like Likes for the new caves, Aerocudas as a new sky enemy, the particularly interesting inclusion of the desert-exclusive Gibdos, and several others. In addition, the game's bosses are a massive improvement as well. Several new overworked bosses are added in the forms of Gleeoks and Flex Constructs, not to mention the game's inclusion of full-fledged dungeon bosses as opposed to a rehashed Ganon battle every dungeon. All of these inclusions give the game so much life and variety, though I definitely think there could've been more enemy variety for the game's various areas. If the desert has its own enemy-type, why not the game's various forests? Or its icy mountainous areas? The lack of unique environmental enemies for these other areas make them still fall flat in terms of feeling like a truly populated space.

On the topic of the game's dungeons, they serve as a mixed bag. Tears makes the choice to have its dungeons harken back more so to the dungeon styles of Zelda of old... in theory. These dungeons certainly LOOK like older Zelda dungeons, and some feel similar to them (such as the Lightning Temple). Others though, like the Wind and Water Temples, are once again terminal activation collections. I am still unsure as to why the game marks every terminal location on your map, as this would at least force the player to explore the map to find them. Still, the build up to each dungeon is genuinely magnificent, and the inclusion of new bosses still makes these dungeons, at least to me, an outright improvement over Breath's, even if they are still far from the quality of many older Zelda dungeons.

For me, the single biggest disappointment in Tears would be the two new map layers. While both are certainly phenomenal inclusions, I can't help but feel as though neither reached their full potential. For example, the sky map in Tears often uses the same cookie-cutter islands dotted throughout it. More often than not, when exploring another section of the sky, you will stumble upon a pronged island with a device dispenser, a launching platform, and a crystal for a shrine quest. Having a few of these islands as a sort of checkpoint location throughout the sky makes sense, but the game has what feels like dozens of them. Beyond these and the game's two sky dungeons, there is astoundingly little else of note apart from a handful of diving challenges and only a few totally unique islands, with one set of thunder-covered islands being the most unique. The game begins on an enormous sky island as its tutorial, implying that the sky will have at least a few of islands of this size. However, there are no other islands even CLOSE to as big as this. The depths suffer from a similar problem of feeling monotonous- while it can be very fun to light light roots, apart from Death Mountain, the rest of the depths has the exact same aesthetic, which is somewhat disappointing.

Still, ultimately these are all minor nitpicks that I'm dwelling upon to show how minor they are. While I still ultimately SLIGHTLY prefer Breath for its perfected focus on exploration, that could change in the future easily. An absolutely wonderful game, sequel, and Zelda experience that I'm sure I'll love forever.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
