Simple Action Adventure. Nice building Item mechanic.
Very bad Graphic, only 30fps, missing rpg mechanics, empty Open World, bad audio syncro, bad character design, missing good Quests

Most disappointing game ever. BOTW is one of the greatest games of all time and this is a lazy soulless clone of it. New skies and depths have nothing fun to do might as well not be in the game at all. Same monsters, koroks, lame sidequests and shrine puzzles from BOTW copy pasted everywhere. Story is awful makes no sense, awful character design and cringe cutscenes. Not just the map, literally EVERYTHING is copied over from BOTW and the story plays out exactly the same. How am I not supposed to feel like I'm just replaying an inferior BOTW ripoff? If you play Zelda to make logic gates and helicopters then I guess this is your game but if you're anyone else with a brain this game is a complete failure. I am still dumbfounded that Nintendo created this embarrassment. Even more dumbfounded that everyone is giving it a 10??? I will never understand... Expand

There is zero excuse for making a copy pasted game, right after tutorial section of the game, it became too boring and felt like I was playing the same game all over again as I did many years ago.

For me Zelda TOTK is just a big dlc. I liked the game but I didn't feel the joy I had felt with botw. Zelda TOTK is a disappointment for me. And I am sad cause I love Zelda games I wish the best for the next game Nintendo (please Nintendo please)

Runes suck here too, where is my stasis ability? the Recall is no replacement for it. The only ones i really liked was Ascend because it helps with getting to higher areas, as well as Fuse which lets me fuse objects like boulders/rocks/collapsed ruins to my weapons/shields for increased damage and defense. Ultrahand is basically just magnetism like in BotW, except that you can attach things together with it, which I always avoid doing whenever possible.
The only times where I can somewhat enjoy this game is when I'm playing it like I would play BotW.
This game should just have been a DLC, which would have been less terrible and wouldn't have somehow taken 6 whole years to make, and wouldn't have cost 70 bucks etiher.
Do yourself a favor and just get BotW instead.

First, let me start by giving some credentials, I have a bachelors in game design and a crap ton of experience too. Now let me state why this game only deserves 2 stars and why anyone who has ever played a better game should stay away.
This game is only fun, for people who have not had the joy of trying something better. This game is bread, sure it is decent, but not compared to ice cream.

The dungeons in this game are great, the shrines (or at least most of them) are great. Every other element in this game is designed to only cause you suffering. The number 1 rule of video games is that they should be fun, it is literally in the definition of game. Yet for some reason Nintendo decided that you can't have fun until you earn it.
What does earn it entail, well you must walk in a straight line for 2 hours to get to the fun. Don't bother fighting enemies, they only use up your resources, making you have to stop on your long boring walk to the content to go gather more resources.
Is that a tough enemy blocking your way, run past it, can't? Then go make food, where is the nearest cooking pot? 2 hours in the other direction. Honestly Nintendo could have saved so much time and money by just making the dungeons and shrines and having a loading screen in between each one that just says "SCREW YOU" because that is what the rest of the game is.
Breakable items were probably added to encourage experimentation, unfortunately there is just a best weapon combo because all weapons are the same, just with different damage numbers, so no need to experiment. All breakable items do is encourage players to not engage with the combat in the game, because even when you win, you lose (your items).
Stamina might as well not exist, until you upgrade it you can (slowly) run for 2 seconds then wait 3 for it to refill. And, just in case you want to try and run a little longer than 2 seconds, Nintendo yet again says screw you by making you walk so slow that it would have been faster to just not sprint at all.
What about horses, well, if you go out of your way to get one (or bring one over from botw) it can save you some boring walking time, but not much as the game map is so vertical and the horses are not able to follow you, meaning you can only really use them around the plains, so you can't use them to get to a single freaking dungeon.
Surely gliding is better, no, stamina means you can only glide short distances and you don't recover stamina while falling so, once it is empty you are done gliding, Nintendo doesn't care that you think gliding is fun, you must play the game in the way they want, this isn't your game, and you can't do anything about it except not play.
Zonai devices fix this right? Absolutely not, did you make a really cool flying machine, vehicle, etc. do you like using it, well screw you it's gone. All Zonai devices have a short time limit that they can be used, for instance, do you not want to fast travel to a cooking pot, then slowly walk back to the "content" of the game, well you can use a Zonai instant pot (assuming you have one in your inventory which requires gathering items, going to a specific pot shaped location, and gambling to see how many pots you get out of the literal gaptcha machine, o yeah, you might as well just fast travel to a cooking pot and skip the middle man). Then finally, you have your instant pot and are ready to cook your meals without leaving the content, nope, screw you again, it can cook 1 meal, then it is gone. 1 meal in this game is basically nothing, imagine 1 healing potion in any other rpg and that is what 1 meal is.

So yes there is some fun to be had, but only if you are willing to slog through the most boring, tedious, monotonous bull crap that video games have to offer. Literally every other entertainment medium (books, movies, etc.) have learned to skip the slowly walking parts of the adventure, but for some reason video games have still not learned how to make getting from content to content fun (with a few exceptions, most famously Infamous).

Although it's the same map as Breath of the Wild, Nintendo found a way to make this game bigger, bolder, and more fun. The new mechanics have let loose the player's creativity, and I'm sure many cool things related to the game will keep appearing for years to come. I've been playing for roughly four hours, but it keeps calling me every time to come back.

I completed the game last week after playing for 3 weeks nonstop, got all shrines and sidequests complete (but not seeds/armors upgrades/photos), just like I did with BOTW.

I'm a huge Zelda fan and completed all games in the series, I had the same opinion as I often read about BOTW, it's an amazing open world game filled with content, but a very poor Zelda game. I hate how people praised the "you can do anything in any order" part, that's exactly what makes it stray away from the formula. You are supposed to unlock unique items in a specific order to gain abilities and unlock harder sections of the map, that's what makes a Zelda game a Zelda game. I also hated like most the weapon destruction, and the stamina/climbing that while it helped with locomotion, it was painfully slow and long and padded the playtime with annoying moments doing nothing but waiting. Nevertheless, I enjoyed pretty much everything else.

Come TOTK, I initially got a bad first impression when they showcased it with a construction aspect. I hate construction games, if I wanted to do so I would play Sim Cities or Minecraft or online survival games, not a single player Action RPG. But fortunately, it ended up being not bad at all. The fact that pieces are limited and break after a while restrict it to smaller sets and mostly to get past a simple puzzle, so I actually liked it.

The new paragliding mechanic is great for faster locomotion too, but completely rendered the horses useless (never used one in the whole game except for quests). It also brings the same negative aspect as climbing that half of the gameplay time is spent teleporting to a tower, launching up and gliding toward the objective point, which get long and repetitively annoying with nothing happening.

As far as the rest of gameplay elements go, there's absolutely nothing else, it's a complete copy/paste of the same game with no redeeming qualities that can explain the long development time, same engine, same graphics, same combats, same quest structure. I think they trolled us by making the weapons "decayed" and even easier to break. Instead of making longer more complex shrines, they just added even more!

The depths seemed cool at first, and I loved the Yoga questline in there, but after it was done I realized it was just an empty mess. It's 10x bigger than it should have been and there's absolutely no reward for lighting it up, it seems like a big afterthought they didn't complete. "Just make the players run along in the dark for hours with no goal".

But the part that disappointed me the most are the side quests. In every previous Zelda games, including BOTW, they were at least interesting to complete, always with some funny or clever aspects. In TOTK, they are just fillers, they are boring collectible or just going back and forth to places. I feel like they forced themselves to place references to every character of other games, even if it didn't fit in the story and the world, they put them there as an afterthought to fill in a checklist of references.

That said, I still loved my time playing it, but I absolutely cannot agree with people saying it's the game of the year, it's just a downgrade to this marvelous series. I seriously hope Nintendo scraps the concept and reboots anew again for the next title.

There are far more quests and free-form content in this game which feels much less of a chore to play through than BotW as there are often many different solutions to a single puzzle or means to completing quests. Most of the Shrines are more interesting than in BotW and I wanted to complete each one I found rather than ignoring half of them in the previous game, since they felt more like a speedbump rather than worthwhile content.

I will say that some of the new mechanics introduced such as ultra-hand and fusing do get a bit tedious after about 30 hours of play. If you go into this game expecting a traditional Zelda type experience, you may feel the same. However, if you’re going into knowing what to expect such as spending a lot of time exploring and going at your own pace, you’ll find it much more rewarding.

I also found that the story was very lacklustre and far too predictable. Obtaining each stone felt like striking off a checklist each time, especially since the cutscenes and video sequences played out in almost the exact same way every time. I found this by far to be the laziest part of the game given how diverse the exploration was, only to be met with cookie cutter story sequences on what should have been the main parts of the experience.

Leading on from that, the main dungeons for each of the sages were great and spiced things up quite bit since they were all very different to each-other and added a diverse set of challenges (often including the new abilities present in TotK). It was also satisfying seeing the calamity reverse itself after defeating the bosses which were the cause of the gloom. The boss fights were also versatile and interesting with a decent amount of challenge.

Overall I’d say TotK is worth playing over BotW, although it takes a certain type of player to want to do most or all of the side content since there is so much of it and it’s often very free-form and samey. I still think Ocarina of Time is the best Zelda game ever created and whilst TotK is decent, it has not displaced the conciseness of a linear and much darker Zelda game with a more abstract story. I think Nintendo should continue to make games as dark as OOT and even Majora’s Mask as the atmosphere I find far more enticing.

I would give TotK 9/10 if the story was at least in the same ballpark as OOT, but it’s simply a disappointment. Don’t let this put you off though as it’s still very much worth playing as it does so many things very well.

Still, the ability to jump high in the sky kills ground exploration. Ultrahand is a fun mechanics but it’s slower and sluggish in everything you may want to accomplish with that. There’s always an easier faster solution.

    Great game, bad sequel.

There are new things like the ability to create basically anything you can think of, and some nice mechanics like rewinding time on objects or going through any type of ceiling. There is a subterranean underworld which i honestly feel was ANNOYING and repetitive, the sky islands were nice tho. They sort of brought back the classic Dungeons, which is good. Overall a must play, just stop repeating like parrots that this is the best zelda ever. IT'S NOT, that spot still belongs to Ocarina of Time, that to this day millions of people still play and stream it.

Negatives are that game is based on heavy grind and is like poor mans minecraft at moments. For every cell for energy there is grind, to use auto creation even more grind... Eventually I started calculating how much time I need to do some simple stuff and it was staggering. Also for me it seems too much creation for this type of game.

Way too empty and repetitive, no incentive to continue once you finish last boss, every vehicle experimentation requires huge grind. Zelda plus minecraft basicaly.

I gotta be honest, the first 70 or so hours of this game were amazing. It was the first game in awhile where that's all I wanted to play with every free moment I had. But after the 70 hour mark it just became very repetitive, and I started to notice just how shallow the story and quests were, and even the dungeons bored me. The first two I did were brilliant (wind and water temples), while the other 2 were very dull and I just wanted to get to the end.

Despite its brilliance, BotW also left me feeling unsatisfied once I beat it. The story was just not very good, and TotK is the exact same in this regard. Not only that but the game gives the player information that the characters don't know, and so you have to continue through the story knowing what's happening but being unable to inform others, which was frustrating.

The more you play, the more you really get the feeling that the developers got tired. Rauru's blessing shrines, for instance. There are so many of these, where you find a shrine and there's no puzzle at all--you just simply collect your treasure and leave. At first it's a nice little reprieve, but then when you encounter them again and again you start to miss the puzzles. They also repeatedly have shrines where you just kill all the zonaite constructs using items in the environment, which are all a cakewalk. I guess those were easier to design than puzzles. Then there's the plethora of caves that are all essentially the same, and the koroks who can't walk and need your assistance to reach their friend, and the guys who need help holding their signs. You do so many of these that it becomes a grind.

That you can also constantly cheese the game also speaks to the developers not caring as much as you think. Once I learned how to make a hoverbike out of 2 fans and a steering stick that's literally all I ever used to travel. There was no longer any reason to care about horses, gliding from sky islands, or land vehicles of any kind. The shrine puzzles can also be cheesed horribly using a variety of methods. Some will say this is intentional, but I fail to see how using the same technique on every shrine could be intentional. There were simply too many variables for the developers to keep track of.

And then there are the depths: a massive, pointless underground that seems to only exist to surprise the player into thinking there's an overwhelming amount of content. There's really not much to be found down there, and everything that exists is repetitive. It just feels like they tried to make the game huge for the sake of being huge. I would have rather had them focus on underwater exploration instead of this entire underground that is a chore to navigate and offers nothing truly exciting.

I think the biggest letdown though, for me, is just the fact that the game is a continuation of Breath of the Wild in every sense. It doesn't feel truly new. It feels like one massive expansion pack. And no matter how much you argue against that until you're blue in the face, that is exactly what it is. They took the world of BotW and edited the heck out of it. While it's amazing what they were able to accomplish on the Switch, it's also visually underwhelming because it still looks like a 6 year old game (which looked dated even back then)--and we've been there and done that.

Overall, I think the game is a good way to waste 100-160 hours, but it's also overrated because it lacks in a number of key areas that left me feeling very unsatisfied once the credits rolled. I don't think I should feel that way from a game that's gotten 10/10 ratings across the board. I certainly shouldn't feel that from a game I dropped 100+ hours into. Just because a game has inventive ideas and loads of content doesn't make it a masterpiece. Pacing, story, consistency and quality of content are also important.

TOTK builds on a great foundation but does not get rid of some issues and does not add much substantial except the obvious building mechanic.

    Animation/Cutscene:
The amount of times I mash buttons to skip animations, cutscenes etc. is ridiculous. If the aim is to make you wear out your controller they have succeeded. Can we please have cutscenes for first few times when opening a chest and after that a much much quicker one unless its a cool item inside? And it's not just chests, its cooking, upgrading clothing etc. Whenever you have to cook 10x of something or upgrade 10x, it's just a button mashing fest.

    QOL:
Very few QOL that we have had since forever in other games. Why can't we sell several items at once? Why can't we move around the shields weapons etc. in the order we want? So much that just feels incredibly dated.

    World Issue:
The vast majority of your gametime will not be spent in the new areas, it will be in the same lands as BOTW.
The new areas are cool at first but very shallow if we examine them closely.

The quests are new but most people in this world don't even know who you are, Zelda is well known but the person that ran around Hyrule for XXX hours killing monsters, helping people, saving the world is apparently a complete stranger.

    Reward Drip:
There is 152 shrines in this game, they are very small puzzles but is a must do since you gain health by them.
There is a 1000 seeds in this game, which are necessary for the various inventory slots.

These things are called "fun exploration" in Zelda, but in all other open world games, gamers hate these "collect XXXX of this" and "XXXX of that". I'm not sure how Zelda gets away with it, I would much rather have 50 Shrines with three times bigger puzzles and 300 seeds to hunt, with three times the hunting.

I get it, "there is an overabundance so all players get a baseline of health/inventory" but that doesn't take away from how simple and boring the shrines often are. Some have more animations/cutscenes than content.
"But it's good how some teach you how the game works!" yeah that's great, too bad they are completely optional, that would make sense if the 1 shrine was the same for everyone, and the 10th etc. that would actually make sense because they would get increasingly complex and it would make sure everyone got to learn combat, physics solutions etc.

So basically you are given a vast world to explore and every time you stumble upon something the reward is a 1/10000 drip.
If you're very very lucky you will stumble upon a unique item but there is never a good clear indication that "hey, what you're doing here is leading towards something cool".

It is almost as Nintendo is expecting you to Google/Youtube "best armor" and "best weapons" instead of having clear quests that give you more than 100 rupees and a meal.

Which I have been doing because I don't want to spend XXX hours looking around for actual cool items/content like an addict.

    Weapons:
We can fuse stuff with stuff! Cool! But why does some items just glue on the tip of my sword and some transform my sword into something actually cool?
Why does a scythe still move like a staff? Or a scimitar still have exact same movement as a Longsword?

I could probably go on but it boils down to not enough unique changes and not a game that does not respect your time.

It is still a very fun game but it is more a reskin than another GOTY.

Admittedly, I was HOOKED at first. Exploring to find whatever new equipment you can get your hands on was addicting. Then it got old. You're pretty much exploring the same landscape from Breath of the Wild so there's no REAL big surprises. Your weapons breaking makes a return and it becomes pointless fighting enemies if your weapons are just gonna break again. I end up not wanting to use my best weapons because I don't want them to break.

People say it's great to have so much to do, but there's nothing FUN to do! Exploring the depths is just time consuming because you're just uncovering the map and grinding for materials to upgrade your batteries or collecting enough poes to get that Dark Link armor you probably want.

The sky islands are just..... there.

The side quests are mostly just pointless. Most of the time I run into a NPC asking me to clear out an area or gather some stuff. Side Quest initiated. Side Quested completed. No sense of accomplishment. That's what this game is. I never feel like I'm really accomplishing anything. Nothing to look forward to.

In all honesty, I've only beaten ONE dungeon. But I know I've seen everything there is this game has to offer me. I'm actually shocked at this personal realization to what I'm about to say. I've loved the Zelda series, it means so much to me, didn't like Skyward Sword, but honestly, I don't think I can ever continue this journey to defeat Ganon in Tears of the Kingdom. I have no motivation to do it.

While I hated Skyward Sword, I at least finished it. Tears of the Kingdom....... I'll never finish it. I'm angry that I was right. I'm even more angrier that I spent the $70 Nintendo thought this carbon copy was worth.

The combat has a wide amount of freedom with customizable structures, which is arguably one of the strongest points to the combat system, but they don't ever feel necessary and practically every fight can be solved with your typical weapons. Exploration is fun and fairly rewarding - you will often encounter characters along the way with quests, new shrines for occupying your time and there will be plenty of instances where you will stray away from your goal just by wandering around. The sky islands are particularly fun to explore, and the dungeons usually have pretty fun lead-ups - however, the dungeons themselves, while visually striking, could be more ambitious, like in the older titles. I like the imagination put into some of the areas you can find - such as encountering a wandering boss or finding a mystical dragon to ride. Your allied characters are likeable, and the story is relatively engaging, but a little basic. The biggest letdown for me was the Depths area - a great concept, but ultimately there isn't much to do in the Depths besides quests, finding tough monsters (which can also be done in the overworld), and completion metrics with unlocking the lightroots. The most interesting thing for me to do in the Depths was find armor, but as soon as I found that most of the armor pieces were just Breath of the Wild DLC sets, most without major statistical improvements to the most basic of armor pieces found in the overworld, I lost interest in trying to find these pieces quickly. Overall, the game is very solid, but perhaps not ambitious enough. Expand

Nothing new. Abilities are inferior versions of the abilities in BOTW. Dungeons are disjointed and laughably easy. At least the ones in BOTW had a gimmick. Story is not cohesive. Fake Zelda went on for too long. I get that you can do the dungeons in any order, but COME ON. Link knows that Zelda is fake like after the first dungeon. WHY DOESN'T HE SAY ANYTHING. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you liked Breath of the Wild, you’re gonna like this game; just, don’t jump into this expecting the game to not be a sequel to BotW, because it has been said since the start that it was like this. With that said, the complaints about the world are many times exaggerated: while it is the same Hyrule, lots and lots of stuff have changed, giving the world a new, fresh look. They could’ve added a few more sky islands, but the aesthetic of it is awesome, especially the equivalent of the Great Plateau here (which-in BotW you don’t return to the great plateau, I don’t understand the problem with the sky islands). Weapons breaking has returned, but honestly I don’t see a problem with it - it’s partially solved with a creative way (which is easy to use - open the quick menu, select your weapon, drop it, then fuse. Takes far less than one minute), and weapons breaking add a challenge element to smth that would be stale. Given the immense amount of weapon that are here, it incentivises you to use different kinds of weapons, rather than always using the Master Sword.
The other abilities are fun, just taking a bit use to. Ultrahand is super useful, especially given the fact it has no cool-down. The ability to build stuff is even more useful - while you need to get used to the rotation mechanic, after you get used to it’s extremely flexible, and almost anything you can think about would work. Sad to see the runes gone, since some were really useful, especially the bomb rune, but it makes sense. The new ability wheel is also faster to use than the old runes menu.

Speaking of performance, my game seemed to run most of the time at 30FPS, dipping only in dense areas with ultrahand, so perfectly on par with what BotW had. I haven’t gotten to the temples yet, but from what I’ve seen - they’re an upgrade from the Divine Beasts. Cool the new companion mechanism, the new thing of learning combat abilities from other characters, and - they’re not like OoT dungeons but, did really anyone expect those? I’ve played some of the sanctuaries though, and in my opinion they’re far better than BotW: more thoughtful puzzles that incentivise the use of ultrahand, brand new mechanics, etc etc. Worth noting all the quality of life changes which do really improve a lot over BotW: the new menus are far more useful, the new recipe book is useful, batteries are a good addition, and overall are just nice.
Overall really, I don’t see the points presented by the overly negative reviews: “the game is just like BotW” (it’s a sequel, it uses the same engine, it uses some of its mechanics - MM had this too, sooo…?), “weapons breaking is bad” (so challenge is bad?), “the game should fill all the map at once” (so you already know what there is everywhere? It’s part of the fun of the game going around and exploring as if you were on a real adventure), “stamina should be removed” (isn’t that a challenge too, so you’re incentivised to explore more for shrines to get light orbs?), “this is just a dlc” (perhaps you haven’t seen a BotW dlc, those are 1/20th of what this game is. A DLC should never, ever do as much as what TotK did to BotW, it would simply break continuity, consistency, and be confusing to every people), “the game is easy” (wouldn’t say so, BotW was far far easier. TotK gives you hoarders of improved enemies with new mechanics, new enemy types, the new demonic miasm challenge, like - at the start of the game which is where I am now, you die far far more often in this than BotW), “it doesn’t have the quality” (in a sea of unfinished, rushed, buggy releases by everybody, just to cite one Redfall among the hundreds, TotK runs like a charm on outdated handheld hardware, having great art direction, improved resolution with post processing, while having zero bugs/glitches, unlike those others which do have bugs the moment you boot up the game. Remarkable to have such a polished experience in 2023), “theres no replay value” (let’s forget about - the entirety of the map then? Exploring it, collecting resources, testing your boundaries, etc). Many people do mention many mechanics being the same while not even having the audacity to look at the rest of the game apart from the tutorial game: there aren’t the same armour sets (might be worth taking a look at the Discord server, there’s an entire channel dedicated to new armour, not to mention also all the new paraglider fabrics and new abilities attached to those), there are more combat techniques (you can learn some from scrolls, for example the Yiga earthquake), you don’t gather the champions to just beat ganondorf (they help you through all bosses and through the overworld, far more fetched than BotW), the story is entirely different.

This highly anticipated sequel introduces a captivating storyline filled with mystery, ancient ruins, and the struggle against the encroaching "Gloom."

The game begins as Link and Zelda delve into a secret passage beneath Hyrule Castle, driven by the enigmatic phenomenon known as the Gloom. Unearthing Zonai ruins, the duo discovers murals depicting a great war against the Demon King and the revelation that the Zonai may hold the key to understanding the origins of the royal family.

As the adventure unfolds, Link and Zelda encounter a mummy bound by Gloom, wielding dark power. A fateful encounter leads to Link's transformation, his arm replaced by a powerful disembodied limb. Joined by the guidance of the ghostly figure Rauru, Link embarks on a quest to restore his strength, reunite with Zelda, and save Hyrule from impending peril.

The gameplay in Tears of the Kingdom remains faithful to its predecessor, building upon the open-world exploration and dynamic combat mechanics that made Breath of the Wild a beloved title. Additionally, new gameplay elements such as rail grinding, mechanical transport, and the ability to fuse objects with weapons add depth and variety to the experience. The inclusion of Recall, Fuse, Ultrahand, and Ascend runes further expands Link's arsenal and strategic options.

The development of Tears of the Kingdom has been a highly anticipated process. The decision to create a direct sequel stemmed from the desire to revisit the vast landscape of Breath of the Wild while introducing fresh narratives and gameplay mechanics. The game showcases meticulous attention to detail, with stunning visuals and a richly crafted world that seamlessly blends familiar locations with new discoveries.

The announcement and subsequent trailers for Tears of the Kingdom generated immense excitement among fans. The continuation of the Breath of the Wild universe, coupled with the promise of an engrossing story and new gameplay elements, has captivated players worldwide.

Although some details remain undisclosed, such as the possibility of playing as Princess Zelda or multiplayer functionality, the anticipation surrounding Tears of the Kingdom is undeniable. Fans eagerly await the release, eager to embark on another legendary adventure within the beloved world of Hyrule.

In conclusion, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is poised to be a worthy successor to Breath of the Wild, offering a compelling storyline, exhilarating gameplay, and a visually stunning world to explore. With its captivating lore, engrossing gameplay mechanics, and the promise of a worthy continuation of the beloved franchise, Tears of the Kingdom is a game that Zelda enthusiasts and adventure seekers should not miss.

Tears of the Kingdom is, arguably, a highly derivative sequel - however, it is willing to encourage players to use unorthodox means of solving puzzles, instead of locking players into linear solutions to its various puzzles. It also has an enthralling and spacious open world with plenty of opportunity to explore and discover. It makes its predecessor feel like a stepping stone to this game's majesty.

As far as criticisms go: I found the game's plot and cutscenes to be mostly vapid and serviceable, barring a few well-delivered lines and powerful moments. However, skipping through them bore no consequences, thankfully. Additionally, the game unapologetically clings to even its more controversial aspects (such as weapon durability), which may alienate anyone who did not enjoy those things in the first game. Having said that, with the widespread appeal Breath of the Wild received, it feels trifling to legitimately critique Tears of the Kingdom for sticking to its guns.

To put it very succinctly, Tears of the Kingdom is more of Breath of the Wild, but with enough new bells and whistles to help it transcend the simplicity of that game. It possesses many of the same pitfalls and quirks, and while many will likely find that appealing, others may not. However, I believe the widespread appeal of Breath of the Wild likely means that most people will find playing through Tears of the Kingdom to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

This level of polish in an open world sandbox is a rarity in today's industry, especially on a console that for all intents and purposes should not be able to run the damn thing.

This game only gets a point off in my book because I do believe the world could have been better developed in the 6 years it had in the oven. Don't get me wrong, there is a TON to do here, but I found the two extra maps, the skies and the depths, to be lacking in one way or another the more I played. The skies, for example, are far too repetitive beyond the starting area, and the depths could've done with two or three more visual environments. However, given everything that is done right in Hyrule proper, this was hardly more than a nagging annoyance at times.

I would say it was an experiment. A trial run to see if this new formula works. And it did. And the day after BotW released they started crafting a masterpiece.

I've never been able to compare any other Zelda game to the confusion and originality I found in Zelda II until this point. And if that was all it is, I'd be cool, but man, oh man, you just gotta play it.

This is why we play video games. This is the sort of game you wait 6 years for and go into with every single expectation hanging on a thread and you're willing to risk it all because if it's dog **** man, then **** all the haters.
