The annoying part is also there: there’s some big dungeons where you’re forced to ‘unlock’ 5 keys and to defeat bosses.. in some situations you’re got annoyed losing your way in mazed dungeon. .. but after all, I’ve played more hours than previous Breath of the wild already. It’s addictive to discover, exploring a whole new world of Hyrule

Brilliant - the building mechanics are fun and the additional ways to explore the world underground and in the sky bring innovation in this Zelda game. So much replay value for these reasons, as well as containing classic dungeons and quests.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a great entry in the Zelda franchise and is absolutely worth a playthrough. I'd go so far as to say if you are going to play one game from the franchise in your life this is the one. That being said the game is full of issues that I think are indicative of Nintendo's lack of interest in pushing boundaries of any kind while also competing with its own characters lack of development and Zelda's own personal development being one of the coolest we have ever seen not just in this series but in many Video Game stories.

I like that they brought back the concept of the sages, having that portion of Zelda lore back in such a big game for the franchise was great. And seeing the first rulers of the land of Hyrule was equally mystifying and interesting as a long time fan of the series. But the sages themselves had zero character development. Even if we include what happened with them in the first game. e.g. Tulin the sage of Wind and a Rito is just a generic teenage kid. they do not appear to have any other defining traits aside from this. Riju is still *just* a Gerudo leader and Sidon is your run of the mill himbo. All of this culminates in their powers which are at best clunky to use, but most of the time they are just useless side mechanics that the game could easily have left out. While it is clear that the building was meant to be the star of this game one of, at least in this gamers opinions, best parts of Breath of the Wild was that the guardian abilities were supplemental to the runes that you collected at the beginning of the game. whether they were defensive or offensive, or hell just let you traverse the wind better, they all had a purpose and were easily used as you played the game unlike the sage powers in Tears of the Kingdom.

The boss fights were immaculate, and each one felt so unique. Finding them again in the depths and getting to play through them a second time with the slightly added difficulty of the gloom was a lot of fun. The Ganondorf fight while not initially at the epic scale I would have hoped for proved to be my favorite in the series. I felt like for the first time I had become strong enough to stand toe to toe with the demon king himself and the final form when it all took to the skies was breathtakingly epic.

Overall I did really enjoy this game, but unfortunately it just left me wanting in so many ways. Characters who didn't even begin to get a beefier backstory or even a whisper of growth throughout this ordeal were forced upon you, while the clunky mechanics and seeming lack of forethought made it strange to move through the world or even use the new abilities that were given to you. I see why this game is going to be the GOTY, but truly it does not deserve it and it's a shame that other titles that have more fleshed out stories and mechanics will be overlooked because this game lets you build a hover bike. I think the ending of this game is a perfect allegory to how I felt when I beat it. Like link sitting on the grass with nothing left to defeat in the world, all I wanted was a hug and instead I just saw some credits roll.

the video game is fun, has immediate gameplay that does not tire and is capable of making you spend hundreds of hours of fun, since facing enemies and completing the various mini-games on the map is extremely fun due to the dynamism of the gameplay. thanks to the ultrahand it is possible to build incredible things and thanks to the compositor the crafting of weapons is fast and immediate. so what's wrong? well since building vehicles and completing minigames isn't the reason a person buys a Zelda game this game for me was a complete bust. Zelda as always is all about exploration and a sense of discovery, and when you fail this point you have failed the entire game. Let's start with recycling. The asset recycling in this game is disgraceful, and I honestly don't understand why people defend this, despite the fact that the game still cost 70 bucks. And stop comparing it to majora's mask which only recycled npc assets. Finding again enemies, weapons, fauna, flora and clothes from the previous game was a huge disappointment. especially when most of the enemies are bokobli, grublin, lizalfos, octorot and lynel again. also the Yigas appear in the exact same way. The map of the sky, so advertised by Nintendo, is nothing more than a group of tiny islands and copy pasted with the same puzzle. the exploration of the sky was disappointing because I find it extremely boring to explore to always find the same things. the underground may look cool at first but then it turns out to be nothing more than a wasteland with only one biome and with ridiculously repeated enemies. it has only 2 structures and it repeats them all over the map giving the feeling of exploring a procedural environment. Hyrule has remained the same, and no, I don't consider moving shrines and korooks to be a different map. I honestly found it extremely boring to explore a map on which I had already spent hundreds of hours botw. the only satisfaction was given by the caves, even if many of them are similar and a bit boring. Since Nintendo has decided that all the same rooms with a puzzle inside can very well replace the Dungeons, also in this game we have only 4 small dungeons (the castle of Hyrule has remained the same as that of botw). The temples in this game are none other than the divine beasts but dressed differently. Honestly I'm sick of this game being compared to the first zelda for NES, since the only thing they have in common is that they have an open map. in Zelda 1 dungeons were essential, just as it was essential to explore to get items without which you could not complete the game. in totk everything is made to be Optional, the really useful things are only given to you at the beginning, everything else is just finding useless things just for completion. if you don't care about Zelda or what it has been to date this game will be perfect for you, otherwise it was a complete disappointment.

It's pretty much the same game as Breath Of The Wild, now with side quests that involve some basic sandbox mechanics.

    - Main quest is super short, and super easy if you play the first one.
    - Same map, with more NPCs, and the same design flaws. One giant map that's still mostly empty. Narrow it down to the main shrine quests, and you'll get 5/15 regions worth of content. All the rest (including the new "maps") is just "exploring" and side quests.
    - The new physics engine doesn't really add anything new to the main quest, it just let's you move faster or build weapons with the same feature set as the previous game.
    - All shrines can be done in any order from the beginning, therefore, all shrines can be completed with relative ease without any experience level.
    - You get to explore new areas, only to collect items that make you explore more areas faster...
    - The "sequel" part only applies to the story, that in my opinion, are leftovers or uncompleted content from the first game that were not released due to time or development constraints. It's like the saying, SSDD.
    - Most new features are improved or patched versions of the previous game
    - After 50 hours of playtime, I'm officially done with any more Zelda games. Makes me feel like all my investment in the previous game (200 hours+) was for nothing.

In summary, it's Botw with a green tint instead of a blue one.

Small issues, but i figured Id mention it as to not simply heap praise. We all know why we love BotW and TotK! Ill be playing for 100+ hours easy. And to the people review bombing and giving the game 0 out of 10, grow up. Im glad I dont know anyone who would rate TotK as a Zero, they must be soul-less jerks who took one look at the graphics and quit. Or uncreative people who find no joy in games unless their being dropped into a shrinking circle from the sky in a battle royale FPS. If you don't like TotK and actually played it, be honest and give it at least a 5 or 7 or something reasonable. Zero is reserved for the worst game of all time, not one of the best of all time. TOTK is a full, expansive, and all encompassing open world game filled to the brim with ingenuity, exploration, and fun.

TOTK is basically BOTW on steroids, the open world we loved exploring before is back for the most part, with additional areas and surprises, with new updates, shrines, caves, wells, and beyond to explore. New abilities offer near unlimited character and creative options to explore, materials and devices can be melded in any way the user sees fit to aid in their exploration and experience in this open and beautiful vision of Hyrule. In addition to an expansive ground level, dark depths and open skies await the player, exponentially increasing the scope and exploration potential to be had.

Everything here is working in unison to guide the player to every wonderful and interactive space that they have created. Quests, main or side, lead you to stables or villages with quirky characters who are in need of aid. These lead you past shrines, caves, chasms, or other engaging landmarks. The only area that feels somewhat played out or empty is the ground level in some areas, likely due to it being roughly the same landmass as it was before in BOTW. Also, many of the new features, wells, caves, etc. are not readily visible on the surface sometimes. Long stretches can be found off the beaten path with seemingly no real direction or appeal.

The story is a good straight forward Zelda tale, the voice acting is excellent and the lore, while shallow, is engaging. I do wish maybe some more care had been put into the distribution and ordering of the main quests. The game really does not want to hamstring the players exploration in any way, but it does come at a cost in story terms. Dragon tear memories can be found throughout Hyrule that give backstory on the area and Zelda's wherabouts. The problem is they are not given in any order, so you could watch the climax of the story before getting to even know the characters. Main quests to find the master sword can be done early on that spoil the dragons tears storyline, characters will be openly discussing how we need to find the master sword while it is sheathed on Link's back.

None of these small issues are enough to detract from the massive accomplishment Nintendo has put out here. Tears of the Kingdom is one of the greatest games of all time, a wonderful and engaging blend of exploration, charm, and creativity.

The first hour feels very similar to BOTW, which isn't a bad thing considering how great that game was, but I didn't understand the price tag.

    Then it happened...

After my 3rd "Shrine" on the starter area, I fully realized what Nintendo attempted and succeeded at doing: Making the game feel fresh by adding even more mechanics that make the game feel like YOUR game and yours alone.

I would feel comfortable giving this game a 10/10 just like my BOTW review. However, the same issues that I had with performance in BOTW (I looked past it then) are even more noticeable here. I am considering backing up the game from my switch so I can emulate it on my gaming PC, with little to no lag.

For that reason, I feel it is appropriate to dock this a few rating points. Nintendo...make a Switch Pro, or allow your games to be played on PC without console hacking or piracy. THANKS

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game held back solely by the platform it is limited to is the the best way to sum up TOTK. Somehow the developers managed to take what made BOTW so good and expanded upon it even more, pushing an already outdated system beyond what most expected. The new sandbox of things to do with Link's new abilities as well as increased enemy variety makes the game stand out enough from BOTW but still keeping the same identity. Also despite being in the same Hyrule as before enough has changed both with the existing BOTW map to make the world feel fresh. On top of changes to locales 2 entirely new levels of the world have been added that offer new challenges to exploration and act as puzzles of their own to try and solve in order to uncover everything that they offer. Going to the story of the game, even though I have not personally completed the main story what I have seen from the story quests and memories akin system in the game it is a step up from what BOTW did although it won't blow you away. The biggest selling point the game offers is the new abilities and each and every ability massively changes the way you approach the game compared to BOTW. The freedom the game allows for is unprecedented in almost any title not in the sandbox genre and that alone could carry this game even if none of the new big areas were added.

TLDR: Amazing sandbox, lots of freedom in both puzzle solving and world exploration, new areas added on top of changes to the BOTW map, slight story upgrade, held back by hardware. 9/10

Each ability in this game is fun and has its uses across all of Hyrule. The Depths, which I thought I'd never go down to, was mixed wonderfully into the story, and became something that was to be scared of, but have fun exploring it. The sky islands wasn't pushed upon you like I thought it might, and was utilized very well. Although the reviews say differently, I thought this was better or at least on par with Breath of the Wild! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's literally a Breath of the Wild clone with different abilities. I actually enjoyed it ok for the four regional phenomena temples and getting the sage's abilities stuff. Then it became a real nuisance as soon as I unlocked the find the fifth sage quest and had only the clue of "the ruins" and everything went downhill from there with the annoying gloom killing you mechanic, way too cryptic and "finding a needle in a haystack" b.s. with how big the overworld was, and needing so much stamina vessels/heart containers from shrines to get the master sword. The breakable weapons, lack of much of a soundtrack, food cooking, and deaths in 1-2-3 hits regardless of how many heart containers you have were also irritating elements carried over from Breath of the Wild into this game. I really hope they stop the Breath/Tears formula here and go back to Twilight Princess/Majora/Ocarina stuff or something new that's different from this formula. I can see how people would enjoy the Breath/Tears formula and it isn't necessarily bad, I just really don't care for it myself and much prefer traditional 3D Zelda formula. Expand

Dispelling some misconceptions, this is not a like a "DLC", totally unfair and irrational to call it such. This game is a full fledged sequel. This game had its own development cycle, the level of new content and novelty is huge. Yes, there are "recycled assets", that does not mean the developers were lazy with it. This is meant to be a sequel in the BOTW universe, so of course there will be returning characters and locations. Keep in mind that A LOT was done to revamp the map, and a lot was also added.

In case it was forgotten or not known, Nintendo made it clear after Skyward Sword that they had to go in a new direction or risk the Zelda franchise dying out, the old formula had been tapped out for novelty and creativity. It's called innovation, and if it's one thing the developers did exceptionally well with TotK, is build even more innovation on top of the previous entry.

    Solid Improvements:
    - A LOT of quality of life additions, smarter use of hub systems so you're not lost roaming around, character progression more streamlined and flexible.
    - Good story, major improvement over BOTW. More intriguing themes, more main characters. The game world is way more busy than the prequel with tons of sub plots.
    - More variety of NPCs, more in depth interactions than the prequel.
    - Combat system has been enhanced by allowing the combination of weapons with an item system, allowing for a variety of different effects/strategies.
-New mobs added and some interesting enemy designs.
-Better dungeons and a return to more traditional boss fights (no more generic blight bosses).
-Highly novel abilities and gameplay mechanics makes for more efficient travel and also allows for more fun and rewarding exploration, especially when coupled with fascinating new map features.
-New item collection systems adds extra layer to exploration and gives more incentive to adventure off the beaten path.
-Improvement on shrines, puzzle solving has more variety due to new mechanics. They are also easier to locate.
-Stable Association system has been vastly improved, much more central to character progression and story.

In terms of the cons, there are a few with the first one impacting gameplay the most:

-Outside of the towns/cities/hubs, the Hyrule field overworld is still vast with not much in between. The main challenge of the game comes in when the travelling ends up happening for extended periods. However, there are characters/quests added here and there to provide diversions when travelling, something that was almost non-existent in the prequel. Keep in mind that travelling is only ONE aspect one the game.
-Menu systems took a step back and are more simplistic. You have a greater variety of items to collect but organization is not very optimized. They do just enough, but could have been much better.
-Core combat remains largely unchanged, durability can still be a pain but it's built into the game, you're meant to constantly loot new weapons and there are now ways to enhance durability.
-Some new gameplay mechanics can at times be clunky, mainly the build mechanic. I find it gets better with more experience - majority of the time, not bothersome IMO.
-Dungeons similar to the Divine Beasts, still fun but lacking depth.
-Textures aren't ground breaking and at times performance can dip, but honestly this goes back to how Nintendo had to balance the Switch's capabilities while absolutely maxing out the game size, literally to the limit. I see it as a trade off more than anything - you need to keep this in mind. Of course graphics will be the same...BOTW and TotK are both Switch titles using the same hardware.
-Looting at times can be anti-climactic, with the reward not being worth the effort put in.
-Apparently Nintendo is down with Woke culture, more of a minor annoyance but it's in the game. Thankfully it's subtle more often than not.

In short, it's my opinion that in spite of the cons, the net sum of all that Nintendo has done to improve, innovate and build on BOTW is monumental in providing a fresh and fun experience for this Zelda outing, with replayability going up drastically. That's the reason I am giving it a 9, Nintendo has broken new ground back to back with their last two Zelda games.

In light of the FULL scope of TotK, it's a huge achievement for the Zelda franchise and a giant step forward. I think certain players are taking issue with the negative aspects of the game, and the fact that they carried over is compounding the reactions, but it's to the point where everything else is being thrown out in the overall evaluation.

If you have no issue riding over those couple of humps, then guaranteed you'll have a blast with this game which IMO is an outright classic.

Not a flawless game, but very good, I played over 150 hours and had a lot of fun throughout.

My biggest disappointment is that they still decided to make the entire story optional and non-linear. Having some non-linearity is fine, but I think they could have gone in a direction that allowed you to do a certain set of dungeons in any order first, another after, for example. This would have allowed for additional abilities that gate parts of the story, and allow a linear story to be EXPERIENCED rather than seeing flashbacks in no particular order. The most interesting "story" is the end, which isn't much. It was still more interesting than BotW, but it wasn't a high bar to reach to be frank.

Something I think was done really well is that when I am doing content I am not necessarily chasing a reward, I am just having fun doing it, whether it's a puzzle or a fight or exploration. It's nice to get something rewarding, but it is not the goal, unlike many other open world RPGs I've played, where the gameplay itself is boring and mindless but the reward is why you do it.

I have not yet completed the main story of the game how to review this But I think I've played enough to rate the game With more than 30 hours played, I have this impression of Tears of the Kingdom
I'll start with the following Is this sequel better than Breath of the Wild? Personally I think so, at least in its Gameplay section From what I've seen, Aonuma and his team saw some of the most common criticisms towards Breath of the Wild and tried to change it or find a way to fix the problem. For example One of the most common criticisms was the small variety of Monsters in BOTW
Tears of The Kingdom not only brings back the old enemies but they also got a redesign, now they can make different attacks and their way of organizing has changed They have also added new enemies to the game (some of these may be familiar to you if you follow the series) Another of the most common criticisms was the issue of weapons within the game and how quickly they wore out.
While the mechanics are still present within the video game, they devised a way in which this same thing stops being so annoying, I mean the combination You can literally mix almost any object to your weapons to boost them or give them some extra effect.
In addition, it usually gives them a little more durability to this same weapon.
Personally, there were times when I wanted to try a new combination and I didn't even have room to pick up this new weapon because my inventory was already full of so many weapons that I had already merged and I had to get rid of one that I already had. It is true that the game can not maintain the constant 30fps at absolutely all times, but it never becomes something frustrating or unplayable and this is noticeable in the Tutorial of the game or for small moments after finishing it, how when using the ability of Ultramano, you may notice some drops in fps but they are not abrupt causing it to be impossible to play this wonderful game.
I will summarize it in this, so as not to continue writing the Bible in the form of an attempt to review. If you played BOTW and liked the experience it offered, you will definitely love this new experience offered by Tears Of the Kingdom
If BOTW was not to your liking, nor do you try, it is very difficult for this direct sequel to be to your liking logically

I had so many frame rate issues there and jumping out into the island after the title plays was just embarrassing for the switch frankly. really glad it improved after that A LOT. seemed that once i left that area the frame rate and visuals improved to a standard I am happy to look at. gameplay is great 90% of the time when your free of that evil island. after much play I am willing to sacrifice that first area and say it is far better than breath of the wild so far but could be improved drastically in many ways and doesn't feel quite as "thought out" as BOTW did but is better none the less through quality of life features if nothing else. It is a great game but that makes the bad things REALLY stand out because most of it is a real masterclass in exploration. For example: i gotta say it. The depths are really boring... such a shame I really enjoy my time with the game but I'm spending most of my time on the surface or the sky cause every time i go down there i feel none of the joy of exploring. what over there? dunno. can't see it. lacks all of the "oooh what's that" that the surface and sky have. feels barren probably intentionally but that doesn't mean that it isn't deathly boring down there. I cannot emphasise enough that the land and sky are as great to explore as ever though once you are let loose. so much to do and try. I've done a lot of side adventures/quests too and they have all been fun and and worth playing.
story wise I think it's more interesting than the first game so far. I like time travel stuff but all the dialogue is like they got the janitor to write it. I think the voice acting is uhhhh not the type I enjoy? anyway I just don't vibe with it i don't really know what you'd call this style of voice acting but the script 100% didn't help anyone. very much personal preference stuff and I think i would have been far more willing to overlook it if the script was better.

basically it's better breath of the wild but it has problems that stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the games excellence. Will be much better if they make an enhanced version at 60fps on "Switch 2" and improve the depths with dlc or something.

Hey Mr Nintendo add in proper ocean swimming and exploration next time? hmm? for me?

This game is SO GOOD. breath of the wild was great, but this game is so good and with so much stuff that it makes botw seem like a tech demo.

A story superior to its predecessor, which was already an excellent game with great game play, makes Zelda Tears of the Kingdom one of the best games I've ever played in my life. Even things like weapons breaking cause the player to have to try various items, so even that which some consider a problem I consider a good strategy.

Graphics: Not super but you're playing this game on switch
Gameplay: New abilities are super, but i want to use breath of the wild abilities.
Story: This game telling imprisoning war (Ocarina of the time, Hero's defeated) and you can with with Ganondorf
I think this game is gonna become a goty.
    Have fun.

This is seriously the best game to come out in years and I really believe its the best game Nintendo has ever made. I'm completely in awe. I went on a complete blackout before the game released and managed to avoid all spoilers. If you loved Breath of the Wild add at least 3 or 4 points on top of the score you gave that game. For me this is better than Botw in every way. I don't understand some of the negative reviews, but I'm not going to let them ruin my enjoyment of this amazing adventure. Thanks Nintendo! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I legitimately can not understand people reviewing this game. Most as far as I can tell are in two camps "It's not a Zelda game therefore it's bad" (which would normally be fine but they base there reviews as if they're ranking against other zelda games), and two "It reuses too much of the previous game". I have played this game for at least 50 hours now and I have completed maaaaybe a third of this games available content, and I've completed about half of the main story, not once did I ever feel like "Man, I've seen these land formations before" or "I've done this before". It just doesn't happen. The sky islands, the depths, the very way you traverse the world is completely different.

Some people dislike the building aspects, it's a fairly minor role outside of shrine puzzles, which is when the building aspects shine the best as creative problem solving. I can understand not liking it, but the game doesn't require you to interact with it pretty much 99% of the time outside of it. You can explore exactly how you did in breath of the wild. Climb up a cliff, paraglide off a cliff, swim up a river, ride your horse. However for those who want to do DOPE **** you can build hoverbikes and cars and boats and death machines and it's very fun to tie a rocket to a korok and launch it to where it needs to go.

Durability is back, and while I liked it in breath of the wild, it's kinda a non issue in tears of the kingdom. Yes weapons break, but you get so many monster parts for a single weapon that it feels like you always have powerful weapons ready to go, which helps encourage you to actually fight monsters rather than just avoid it to prevent weapon damage. The game gives multiple fuse parts which helps you decide what resources you're willing to spend, so if enemies are clumped together, using a bomb flower on an arrow to finish the fight faster is something you'll consider very naturally.

The dungeons still aren't dungeony enough for me, they still behave more simmilar to divine beasts. However, this does not mean the temples aren't fun, they're still designed to take advantage of breath of the wilds unique freedom of movement. The story is also way better than breath of the wild it constantly has you asking questions and it's a genuine joy to receive memories to unlock a little bit more of what exactly happened.

Peak around the corner there's a falling rock to take you to a sky island, there's a chasm to jump in, another cave another well another pack of mobs another camp here's a stable with a quest go talk to some people. Litterally side tracked the game there's so much to do and explore it just teeters on the brink of being overwhelming.

a breath of fresh air that makes you feel like a little explorer in a whole new map with so many things that make it so different from its prequel, every corner every place is something new to explore from the underground to the sky.

This game is a masterpiece. It is very innovative and the sense of freedom and adventure you get from playing it is somehow bigger than Breath of the wild, even though it's almost the same world map. It performs very well, even on a 2017 hardware and has a breathtaking artistic direction. It runs at a constant 30 fps and very rarely drops to 25. A great experience, a complete game with no bugs or microtransactions, is quite enjoyable with thousands of possibilities. I don't give it a 10 because no game is perfect and I think the price is quite high. But I'm satisfied, happy, it's clear that the developers put love into it and I'm enjoying it. I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
