This is what I personally want in a sequel. More of the first, but better. My only grips are my inability to pet animals, fed them, and make my own village. Posting as a 10 vs a 9 due to the amount of people giving this a zero. Zero is unplayable, a failure in every aspect. This, whether or not this type of game is your thing, is clearly not a failure in many of the areas it sets out to compete in. Expand

The great thing about Tears Of the Kingdom, they take what's working from Breath Of The Wild and improve it. You have story, (finally !) , grown up characters, more places to discover and explore, the difficulty settings has increase a tad, the shrines makes sense, more new enemies, more side quest.
yes you may not have your usual arsenal in BOTW, but thats what makes it a challenge.

First of all, this still doesn't feel like a Zelda game. Not anymore. The vibe, the feeling. Not the same. It could've been released one or two years after BOTW as a DLC or something like that. I really think Nintendo could've done much better on Switch or even go beyond the console for this game. They still do not translate the game for many languages and that is a shame. Classic Nintendo. Really don't think it deserves all the hype I was having with it mostly because it took 6 years for a new game and the way it came was the same game as before with some minor tweaks. If they get the GOTY award, this has to be because there is no competition from other games that deserves it better (that is if you don't consider Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space or any other to be good just because they are remakes LOL) Expand

What initially seemed as a mere "DLC" to some people has been completely abolished by the overwhelming amount of new content and features that, somehow, create an even bigger sense of freedom and choice that the previous entry Breath of the Wild established.

Speaking of freedom and choice, each mechanic that Link can utilise such as Ascend and Ultrahand are crafted in such a way that it truly allows complete and total freedom to tackle objectives and secrets (that, by the way, the world is absolutely FLOODED with!), and gracefully enables this mouldable gameplay that is entirely unique to the player. You do things how you want, when you want, and that is where Tears of the Kingdom truly shines.

I bought Breath of the Wild on release day for my brand new Nintendo Switch, which I had purchased with my student loan instead of spending money on less important things, like food. I spent many nights eating my 40-pack of Nigerian instant ramen that was supposed to last me until the next semester, questing around Hyrule.

I had my problems with the game. Firstly, the weapon durability was far too punishing for the lack of weapons in the game. To compound this difficulty, it was far too convoluted to expand your inventory to ensure you always had an ace up your sleeve in the form of a powerful weapon to dispatch tough foes. Obtaining the Master Sword also alleviated this hurdle. Getting around Hyrule could sometimes be a pain without a fully upgraded stamina bar, and the rain would hinder all progress for a while as Link slid off the side of mountains. Most of all, for a place as big as Hyrule, it just felt empty.

Tears of the Kingdom has addressed all these issues in a very unique way. The new "fuse" ability allows you to boost less powerful weapons to aid you in times of need. While I would have liked a boost in durability, knowing you can create your own lethal weapon out of something as brittle as a stick really alleviates some anxiety. "Recall" and "ascend" can help you move around the map when traditional methods are not available. But the most important change is Hyrule itself.

Rather than just throwing a bunch of NPCs across the world, Nintendo opted to create sky islands. This reminds me very much of Skyward Sword, which is a detriment to the game, as vocal critics have been using this fact as ammunition to suggest this is a cash grab from Nintendo.

The main difference between Skyward Sword and Tears of the Kingdom is the traversal of these islands. Tears of the Kingdom's island hopping feels a lot slower than hopping on a Loftwing and gliding to the next location. Some thought has to be put into moving from island to island. You can skydive if you believe you have the speed and stamina to make it to the next island, or you can use an Ultrahand to climb aboard a Zonai contraption to take you there. One of my favourite things about the flying contraptions you can make with the Zonai devices is how uncontrollable they are. I thought Loftwings were tricky to manoeuvre, but the knife-edge nature of the DIY vehicles really makes you think and perfect your designs. But the main attraction is The Depths...

Going to The Depths for the first time made me reminisce about journeying down the Great Hollow for the first time and seeing an ancient, barren land. The Depths are expansive, as big as Hyrule itself. I have yet to know exactly what this place is, but this space alone fully justifies the £70 cut-and-epaste job. However, it also reveals a bigger problem.

The Switch came out in 2017 with Breath of the Wild as a launch title. It has taken 6 years to revisit this incarnation of Hyrule. Typically, each console gets 2 original Zelda games (minus the Wii U, which we should try to forget about...), so this is theoretically the last one for the Switch. So far, a new Zelda game has been released on a 2-year cycle since 2017, so we can expect 1 or 2 GameCube remakes in the pipeline.

The issue is that Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel, and Nintendo have outdone themselves. The Switch is struggling to run this latest instalment. The Switch is donning 2015 hardware in a 60 FPS standard world. Unfortunately for Nintendo, this game is both their magnum opus, and their most successful home console's death rattle. In order to meet this high standard they have set themselves, they will need a new console to drive Link's next chapter.

If it takes them another 6 years to make a Zelda game, and a Zelda game is likely to be a launch title for their next console, we can expect an iteration of the Switch in 2029, with the possibility of a Switch Pro in 2024. Hey, at least we are probably getting Twilight Princess...

Thank you Nintendo, this is the Switch's Swan Song.

If you are a Zelda fan I can't imagine you would be disappointed by the scope of the new content and expansion of the ultimate lore. This is not the same map... While there are familiar landmarks, the land of Hyrule has been twisted and broken apart making this a whole new map including the vast network of the new underground caverns and the floating islands that await exploration. It's entertaining to see people try to affect this games meta score by throwing out review bombs and still not making a dent in its high marks due to the overwhelming positive reaction to this game. If you can't stand this game because it's popular and positive reviews, maybe your problem isn't this game..

I don't like the building mechanics or weapon fusion. it feels too goofy for a normal zelda game. like a rock too heavy to move, becomes light as a feather because i glued it to a sword? idk feels kind of cheesy. it's like i have to stop playing zelda to do a poorly functioning little big planet level every 10 minutes. also it works very poorly. the games physics cant keep up . things are constantly getting stuck to things they aren't supposed to. the fan boats seem to gravitate towards walls and ledges amd just get stuck there and need reset. i frequently have to kill myself to reset glitches on puzzles that aren't working. like once every 2 hours i have to do this..... that's just plain shamefully lazy game design. never once did a puzzle glitch out on breath of the wild (a substantially better game). this should have been a new windwaker game instead. would have been a better fit for this gimmicky building mechanic. huge drops in framerate anytime something happens. like just turning the camera too much makes the framerate drop. you can only sprint for 3 seconds early in the game and exploration is tedious. took far too long to unlock the glider. which absolutely never should have gotten taken away. this is probably a good game, but a very bad sequel in my opinion. if botw is like playing an expensive oil painting, then totk is like playing a looney tunes episode. it's more in your face and crazy, but lost all the artistic wonder i loved breath of the wild for. also $70 is uncalled for and undeserved for ANY Nintendo switch game. that just isn't right. its very obvious that this game was stuck in development limbo for 6 years. it's extremely dated, and messy. the more i play it, the more it feels like a chore. rather than a fun videogame i want to get home to play. the combat is ridiculously easy, and has no strategy whatsoever anymore because all the fused weapons are so overpowered. totk has completely lost the plot of what made link special. it's a pretty big "screw you" to every other zelda game and their developers. it's also a huge drag that the sheikah slate, and all it's fun abilities are gone. no explanation, its just gone. replacement with the "purah pad" which is literally a smartphone with no abilities like the sheikah slate. i just dont understand what makes this game deserve all the praise it's getting. totk just plain doesn't deserve it. middle of the road game. nobody seems to be calling it out for its horrible physics, unwieldy gameplay mashup, and having more glitches than any zelda game that has ever existed. possibly more glitches than any 1st party Nintendo game that has ever existed. polish is the thing Nintendo always prided itself on, so I don't understand why this was allowed to remain so sloppy upon release. it perplexes me. i don't have an epic amount of $ to spend on games, and I'm feeling buyers remorse... from a zelda game? those words together would have made my skin crawl one year ago, but here we are. i sincerely hope this is a one-off and doesn't influence the future of the series. sorry everyone. don't mean to ruin it for other people enjoying totk, but i just don't see it as a truly good game. OK, I was already a fan of BOTW, and loved the open world exploration ethic (I'm no speedrunner - I enjoy a more leisurely approach). I thought BOTW was the best game I would ever see and was worried that TotK could not improve on it.

Well it has - and then some. In so many ways it has added to the experience. Now to be fair, for an y new users to the franchise (are there any left?)

But after some time even newbies who enjoy exploration and story lines will grow to love this adventure.

I can see myself playing this title many times over for years into the future. An easy 10/10 for me.

Firstly, let me note that I am a nintendo fanboy and zelda fanboy and have been for 27 years. Tears of the Kingdom is a great game but by no means perfect and has plenty of flaws that stops it from being truly a game I would call the greatest of the Zelda franchise, as I will outline below (no spoilers). Tears of the Kingdom is a great game but by no means perfect and has plenty of flaws that stops it from being truly a game I would call the greatest of the Zelda franchise, as I will outline below (no spoilers). To anyone saying the game is just a copy and paste of breath of the wild, sure, it kinda is but enough new things were added and the game was polished enough to make it worth being called a new game. Also, with two additional maps added, followers, weapon repair system and new powers, the game is a truly different game built upon what BOTW made and that is what makes it great; BOTW was amazing so why try to fix something not broken. Pokemon learned that a long time ago. Overall, it is what I expect from a Zelda game, top quality game play, a map filled with so much to do I get lost in it and millions of ways to slay Bokoblins. Now, to anyone saying it is a perfect game and is best ever made and we must worship the ground Nintendo walks on due to this; not by a long shot. The game is great but does not have the same shock factor that BOTW had 7 years ago. Also, lets be honest, the graphics are subpar for this day and age, especially after just finishing the visual masterpiece that was GOWR but it still has that Zelda charm that breath of the wild created and Hyrule is beautiful enough that it is easy to look past the visual flaws but that is more a Switch problem than Zelda problem; team worked with what they had. Also, I do think they could have put more effort into the surface map; it really is just a bit too similar to BOTW to count for 7 years of production time. I do feel a lot of things have been polished up and this is the direction future zelda games are going and I am fine with that. Overall, the game is great; I got the same feeling as when I play Skyrim. It is a world I can just get lost in and no matter what direction I go in, there is always something to find. The game was certainly not worth being a 70 dollar game, that was just a bit of greed on Nintendo's part and makes me disappointed. Still, I love the game and will be putting in likely hundreds of hours to match my BOTW playtime. It is defiantly a good game to play if you are looking for a world to just get lost in and not expecting much in terms of story just like BOTW. (Its a zelda game, the story is never the point). Also, Rehydrated Ganon. If you did not like BOTW, you won't like this. If you are not a fan of big open worlds with total freedom and graphics from the 2017's, you won't like this. If you are someone who hates nintendo, you won't like this. If you are someone who hates dealing with breaking weapons, dark souls level difficulty in some fights and having to actually use your head to solve puzzles (or just use youtube) you won't like this. This game is not a fun hack and slash but an open world exploration with difficult combat, lots of things to micromanage and a huge world to get lost in. If you are looking to just lose a few hundred hours of your life, go for it. Still not worth 70 dollars though. Expand

I finished the game, and the final boss against Demon King Ganondorf felt actually challenging. He could dodge my flurry rushes! When you first see him become the Demon King, and the health at goes up, it’s intimidating, but then it KEEPS GOING and almost goes off the screen. And after the long and hard battle, he throws away everything and eats his tear to become the Demon Dragon, which turns into an epic fight on the back of the Light Dragon facing off against the Demon Dragon.

This game is very good though I wish I could give it a 10 I want to realistically rate this game so I don’t send the wrong message. If you enjoyed the shrines and puzzles of the last game then you will most likely enjoy this game. Some complaints I have is mostly technical issues but otherwise there is only one thing I don’t like. The game doesn’t run so well because the switch was pushed to the limit with this game. The only non technical thing I have to complain about is the lack of new things in the over world. Sure there are new towns but I wished some areas geographically changed a little bit, but not too much to the point that the over world is unrecognizable.Yes, I do think it was worth the hype but, there are some things they could have done better. If you read this all I thank you for seeing my opinion. But in general the game was very good (or at least so far). The abilities were all very fun to play around with (specially fuse and ultra hand) I also liked the more creativity that could be used to build machines so there is always something to do even after you get hundreds of Korok seeds and 100% the game. (Who doesn’t hate Korok seeds) I don’t like Korok seeds because obviously it is a pain to get 999 of them when they are so cleverly hidden.

BOTW and TOTK followed a new gameplay paradigm of minimalist scenaristic exploration games. It's not really bad but it more looks like an independant €10 steam game than a Zelda game. Though the artistic direction is neat, the technical aspects of graphics are totally overaged, music is boring, controls of Link are quit bad, the inventory and menus are too complex. You spend your time to solve puzzles or to find nuts but the game is empty of any epic Arthurian quests or bosses, only cooking or spending time wandering.

I'm not convinced at all by this new paradigm of Zelda.

I like the aspect of having to overcome a major setback after having set Hyrule on a course of recovery, as it mirrors what actually can happen in real life (obviously i don't mean the whole magical beasts and things of that nature being in real life...)

Don't get me wrong here though. There are things that I don't like (still can't pet the dog! :(....) but again, it's so minuscule in comparison to the size and depth of the game overall.

The visuals of the game are stunning and some of the changes are so enjoyable to me (ex: some of the ways you get korok seeds adds a further level of interaction with the koroks that is absolutely adorable.) And i genuinely don't care what others say in regards to the dialogues and voice-acting. Matthew Mercer as Ganondorf could not be anymore perfect and while I'm only done the first major plot point regarding the different races and groups of people, I can already tell how pleased I am with the new characters and how we are involved with them.

And Tulin is a precious muffin who I will die on every hill for.

I could go on and on about this game from a psych level as well but this isn't the space for an essay or dissertation so I'll leave it at this. The game is amazing and by no means is it perfect but I honestly don't know that a perfect game does or will ever exist. And that's why I love it so much.

It's a perfect sequel to BOTW. The World Map is known, but also different in a way that it makes it unknown (Don't know how to say that but you get the idea).
Also the new features like Ultra Hand and Fuse are pretty fun.

Better than its predecessor, a huge, epic, very complex game. But it's not for everyone, it's a game that requires hundreds of hours to get everything it offers.

i am changing my negative review to a 10 , i was initially unimpressed but i stuck with it and if you guys give it more time i promise you its better then BOTW. Yes the graphics are terrible lol but its still fun and hopefully when switch 2 comes out in 2024 it will run a lot better. If you like BOTW then you will love this game , just give it some time to learn the new mechanics

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
