THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake is precisely that, a remake of one of the most iconic and best rail-shooters of all time. In terms of core gameplay and story, there isn’t much; however, the touch-ups are all that was needed for a perfect refresh. To add to this, the gyro controls are surprisingly great and the best way to play. Grab yourself a joy-con and a willing partner, and shoot your way through bullet-hell in THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD.

Currently a Nintendo Switch exclusive, The House of the Dead Remake does a decent job at staying faithful to its legacy to the best of its ability by keeping the spirit of its campy acting and fast-paced action. The controller handicap the team had to deal with is unfortunate, but also an expected one, given the circumstances. While it’s a game that will guarantee a split opinion amongst fans, based just on frame rate and soundtrack alone, I found enough entertainment here to keep me pretty satisfied and coming back for more.

The House of the Dead remake is characterized by a faithful embodiment of the elements of the original. However, it does not reproduce the sophisticated manipulation and immersion, which are characteristics of the gun shooting genre, so it stays in the remake as a rip-off of the original, not a remake beyond the original.

The House of the Dead: Remake can be an enjoyable return to the classic arcade rail shooter, but performance hiccups and frustrating controls are scarier enemies than the zombies themselves.

The House of The Dead: Remake bets on nostalgia and tries to renew itself while leaving its arcade essence intact. Sadly, controls are not precise and makes it frustrating in a short time. If you overcome this huge problem, its new art direction that gives the impression of being an old game and adjust to its shortcomings, The House of The Dead: Remake becomes fun to deliver you a simple and action-packed experience.

The House of the Dead: Remake will appeal to fans of the original for obvious reasons, but several significant issues hold the disappointingly threadbare experience back in several ways.

The House of the Dead is a classic and monumentally important video game. I didn’t even bat an eyelid when this popped up on the eShop. Even knowing that as a Forever Entertainment project it probably wasn’t going to be all that, my fierce loyalty to the brand caused me to buy this instantly. As I wrote in the introduction to this review, however, The House of the Dead Remake makes Uwe Boll’s film seem like a masterpiece by comparison. At least Boll had the good sense to put gratuitous B-genre exploitation nudity and unintentionally hilarious directing in his film. His film was a thing you could enjoy drunk. You play this game and you’ll just jump straight to the hangover.

Im a HoD fanboy so might not be the most objective here. Been waiting for this game for a long time and my biggest concern was: how will aiming work? There is no light gun for switch so we are left with gyro. Thankfully it does work! Its not perfect though but with few hours training it gets commfy enough - so really give it a try.
As for graphics, its good enough. After so many years you could expect a bit better but switch has its limitations. Music score is hit and miss for me. Some tracks are awesome - some just so so. Overall, game is as cheesy as should be and at the end of the day its a lot of FUN. You just wanna try again and beat you score. Just got to protect the life cycle...

This game is far from being perfect but if you are a hardcore fan of rail shooters and specially of The House of the Dead series you must not miss it.

Anyone who is lucky enough to remember the original House of the Dead and what glory it was picking up a light gun and blasting some zombiesAnyone who is lucky enough to remember the original House of the Dead and what glory it was picking up a light gun and blasting some zombies has likely sorely missed this game with the golden light gun generation (PSX) never pumping out an updated version back then.

Thank god then that you can get this games remake on the Switch as it is the closest thing you'll now get to a light gun experience thanks to the use of gyro control (and preferably the use of a good gun-like joycon accessory). The latest patch addresses many issues the game had at launch making it an enjoyable arcade experience romp on Switch with even a horde mode.

The game is almost perfect on Switch... almost. The biggest problem the game has is frame rate in "Performance" mode the game hits UP TO 60FPS, with the regular mode hovering between 30-45FPS, so the most consistent experience naturally comes from the regular mode however it is truly bewildering how the devs couldn't get a simple game like this running a solid 60FPS, or at least a solid 30FPS. The second thing I'd like to see is instead of having to manually center the crosshair with a press of the "Y" button is an option to auto-center the crosshair after 6, 8, 10 or 12 shots. That should then likely solve the problem of inherently inaccurate gyro control. For these reasons I'd give the game 7/10, it could have so easily been a 9 or 10 with proper optimisation. A trick has really been missed by the publisher here as well by not offering this stonkingly good remake of a classic in a bundle that included a gun-like joycon accessory to get the most out of the gyro function.

A must have for light gun game lovers on Switch, less so for other platforms due to a much bigger lack of gun-like controller accessories.

Unfortunately, though faithful in level design, this remake has lost a lot of the campy magic that made the originals so memorable. I was also disappointed in how incredibly easy it is; I managed to clear it on classic with credits on my first go, certainly not reminiscent of my time spent struggling on the original.
The biggest crime by far is the change to the Magician end boss. He's now incredibly easy to beat (he used to be rock solid) and THEY CHANGED HIS THEME. Unforgivable.

The controls are quite bad, and the game runs very slow. Not worth it supporting such a watered down version of the game.
