Fun but feels really bloated. There are a 1000 moons you have to collect and about 150 off them are fun to get.

Just a joy. This is as good as 3D platformers gets for me, I think. I played through it in bits and pieces between other games that demanded a greater commitment of my time (e.g. BOTW).

It's Mario, with the same mechanics and more new to play, the same old characters but with even more beautiful design, nice and well-done worlds to explore and a lot of content to remember the old days.
Indeed it's a must-play for all Switch owners.

You know you can expect high quality for a flagship Mario game, and this game is no different. It's a very polished experience with great visuals, soundtrack and gameplay (including coop gameplay).

However, it's a bit too easy for my taste and personally I don't find any replayability whatsoever in this game which is a bit of a let down.

A good game, but a bit too boring for me. The moves aren't as cool as I thought and the overall game isn't as good as it is always presented by users and Nintendo. I definitely see its qualities, but it's not perfect in my opinion.

I have to say that this a really good game, however, not all about it is perfect.
If you ask a general public what's its favorite Mario game, Oddysey will be probably the less voted, Why? Because it doesn't feel the same as the previous ones.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy have objectives for its collectibles (Stars or Shines) that encourage you to explore the worlds, but Mario Odyssey doesn't have them after the main moons.
There are way too many Power Moons in worlds that are not open at all, Mario Oddysey was sold with the idea of an open-world game, but some maps are reduced like a Mario 64 normal level and make you think that was just marketing for the game.
Talking about moons again, some of them are in rare places that were put there because yes. Collect the rest of the moons doesn't feel fun at all, it becomes tedious after a while, and having a lot of moons around the map breaks the point of collecting the main ones.

I hate to say this, but comparing Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy, Oddysey was my least favorite. The experience was satisfactory but less fun than previous Mario titles.

Mario odyssey is an amazing Game!!! I don’t like it AS Much as Breath Of The Wild But it’s Still AMAZING. Very much like 3D Mario's before it, (like sunshine's fludd and galaxy's gravity mechanics) Odyssey introduced Cappy. The mechanic is fun to play with and makes this 3D Mario stand out from the rest. Great game.

-The music are good but since you don't get booted out of the world when you find a power moon, it means you can stay 30 minutes in the same stage if you want, meaning that you'll hear the 2 minutes soundtrack a loooot during that time of exploration. And that will make you bored of the melody quite faster, which is kinda sad.

-Litterally a third of all the power moons (so around 300) feels like they are just there to fill the game. A lot of them are just impossible to find if you don't go search on the internet. So yeah, it rewards you for exploring, but also punish you for exploring 1h a damn power moon and not finding it because it's ridiculously hidden without any clues.

I also think the story could have been thrown out at that point since it's totally useless. I would have prefer a simple ''find everything to repair X thing'' because the marriage thing is lame ( and so outdated, come on Nintendo).

I personally prefer the more linear Marios, but there’s no denying that this game is a modern masterpiece in every way. The animations are lively, the worlds are well designed, and Mario’s move set is a ton of fun. Great game.

Enjoyable, but quite easy and shallow at times. I've enjoyed the 3d mario games in the past, with galaxy 1 & 2 being my favourite. This game was made to sell the Switch, which is fine, but that's probably what led to the somewhat low difficulty. MAN am I late to the party. I'll admit that I was never keen to play switch games back in high school. Of course I played the occasional round of Smash Bros Ultimate and I was always up for the next new Pokemon game whether it be good, bad, or god-awful. But after playing this game, I've had a change of heart for the switch. For a while, I've been trying to figure out what makes this gameMAN am I late to the party. I'll admit that I was never keen to play switch games back in high school. Of course I played the occasional round of Smash Bros Ultimate and I was always up for the next new Pokemon game whether it be good, bad, or god-awful. But after playing this game, I've had a change of heart for the switch. For a while, I've been trying to figure out what makes this game so enjoyable. And while there are several answers to fill in that blank, even after research I had trouble figuring. On the surface it's just another Mario 64 sequel. You explore new lands, you beat up Bowser's henchmen, you hunt down wascally wabbits...the usual. But what's really great about this one, is that the controls are tighter than ever before. And combined with the abilities of his new buddy Cappy, you can achieve some seriously great platforming feats. I still remember how long it took me to learn the careful timing of the wall jump when I was a just kid and it feels great to master it here. Combined with all the other great mechanics...enemy possession, mini-level challenges...the fact that tossing a hat is equivalent to the force of a kick in the face...that's just good stuff man. At the same, nothing really feels forced in this game. Granted you need a set amount of Power Moons to move on, but nothing feels really restricting. The lack of a live system and plenty of fair check points, makes this adventure feel pretty limitless. In my Super Mario 64 review I complained about how easy it was to die in that game...and for the past 20 years, all of the 3D games had an annoying habit of booting the player out of the level whether they reached the goal or met death. And that back tracking really got on my nerves. Now that it's non existent, I can just focus on collecting as much as I can in each stage. I've said once before that one of the most important elements in game design, is freedom. Whether is comfortable controls or enjoyable mechanics, it's vital to give players the joy of exploring a brand new land. Give them the power to conquer great challenges. Game designers that fail to understand that end up relying on pay-to win systems and outdated gameplay mechanics only focusing on making the big bucks. I can only hope that my favorite electric mouse doesn't end up like the Blue Blur. Setting that aside though, I wouldn't call this my favorite Mario game. And that mainly comes down to the game's theme. Odyssey is blend of cartoons and realism. You've got cartoony Goombas mixed in with scary as hell T-Rexes! And while everything looks really good besides the eyes of the soul stealing human NPCs, it never felt tremendous to me. 64 had a magical castle theme, Sunshine was a vacation, Galaxy had space exploration, while Odyssey is just a world tour. It's a good theme especially when you blend it with realism, creating the idea that Mario is entering our world. However, Galaxy still has the more interesting theme. To call this a successor to Galaxy would be hard to swallow. I'd rather think of this as an evolution of Super Mario 64's format. Yeah, its a shame there's no hub area connecting all the worlds...but with all the Easter Eggs in the Mushroom Kingdom, I'm convinced which fans are going to enjoy this game the most. It's a nice reminder that there's a Mario game for everyone. Since this isn't a serious that focuses heavily on story, I think it's safe to say that the Mario developers should focus on creating new styles of enjoyable gameplay rather than the creating a superior sequel. So what's left to say? Well I will say, that the Metro Kingdom levels are amazing. You get to fight a robotic hell spawn, evade a T-Rex on a moped, play a possible sequel to "Shell Shocked" from Mario Party 2, and "Jump up Superstar"...good Star Spirits I love this musical level...ITS SO GOOD! It just MAKES this game! So now that I'm on board with the awesomeness. I'll be really stoked in they pull a Galaxy 2 and make an incredible sequel to follow. By the way, have you noticed how much lore the Metro Kingdom adds to the DK Country games? Whatever, the best way to play this game is too listen to "Jump Up Superstar" on loop while you play this game. It's like the montage trailer just comes to life. I'm really looking forward to returning to this franchise in the future. I won't spoil the ending this game either, its so ridiculous and awesome at the same time that it deserves to be spoiler free. So for all the new players and returning fans, I highly recommend this game. It takes time to adjust, but once get used to the sweet new controls, you can really dance on air. Nothing's stopping from zipping to one kingdom to the next collecting piles of Power Moons with each leap. And with all the untapped potential to go with this gameplay style...JUST IMAGINE. Mario capturing the Ruined Dragon, fighting ol' Tanga from Super Mario Land 2...I don't have much to complain about. Now I just want to dream(: Expand

It's been very long since I played a Super Mario game before, so playing Super Mario Odyssey felt quite refreshing.
However, Super Mario Odyssey pays homage mainly to the older sandbox Mario games, which I haven't played before, and that made my experience with Odyssey interesting but also slighty... complicated.
Now, the story, just like in every other Super Mario game, is not important.

Now, the story, just like in every other Super Mario game, is not important.
What's important in a Super Mario game, is the gameplay, and the gameplay in Super Mario Odyssey is the best in any Mario game I've played, and also arguably in any platformer game I've ever played; it's quite crazy, thanks to the excessive amount of different mechanics that sync in well with each other and Mario's moveset.
Visually, it's one of the better looking platformer games I've seen in the past few years, and the music is surprisingly good as well.
Additionally, the level design is detailed and creative, and the areas are fun to explore, albeit smaller than I expected.
Unfortunately though, the story is pretty short and the post-game content is very underwhelming and lackluster.
Also, the bosses are way too easy and repetitive.
My biggest gripe with the game, however, is an unpopular opinion. I know a lot of people won't agree with me on that, and that's fine but... I really don't like the progression system in this game; collecting Power Moons to progress through the story is tedious and it brought down the entire experience at times.
I can somewhat understand why most people like that though.

    Pros:
    + Exciting gameplay
    + Amazing mechanics
    + Beautiful visuals
    + Great level design

    Cons:
    - Short playtime
    - Boring post-game content
    - Bad boss fights
    - Progression system

    - Great -
Super Mario Odyssey is a very well-crafted game and it's arguably one of the better platformer games I've played in a while, but it has some serious annoyances as well.
All in all, it's a very good game but it's also surprisingly unremarkable and a little bit... disappointing.

    Do I recommend it?:
It's pretty fun to play for the most part, so yes.

Some super creative, fun ideas, and the core 3D Mario gameplay will never be bad. But, this felt overstuffed. Truly an insane amount of collectibles to the point it cheapens the experience. I would normally play all the extras in a Mario game. With this one I dropped out an hour or two after I got to the credits.

This game is great. If you own a switch then this is a must have. My only drawback for this game is that while Cappy allows for some really cool movement, the game rarely uses it as a mechanic. Once you know how to do some tricks with Cappy the platforming sections become way easier.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
