I was skeptical about Super Mario Odyssey at first, mostly due to the realistic setting bearing similarities to Sonic 06, I thought that this would be the first bad main series Mario game, I have never been so wrong about a game before. First the soundtrack and visuals are amazing, to say the least. In fact, as of now it is the best looking game on the Switch bar none, though Sonic Mania slightly beats Mario Odyssey in terms of the music. Mario Odyssey’s weakest point is, like most Mario games the story. Summed up it goes like this Bowser kidnap Peach and Tiara the sister of a magic hat named Cappy who Mario has to wear after his normal red cap is torn to bits in the opening cutscene by Bowser. And that leads us to the gameplay and a sandbox Mario game has never felt this good before. Mario controls excellently during normal gameplay with the controls feeling super responsive including the motion controls which had a couple of problems in galaxy. The main gimmick of Mario Odyssey is Cappy who can control enemies, kill enemies and be used as a jump pad which I have yet to use. Cappy when controlling enemies feels like a whole new game that had and equal amount of effort into it as the main game I will leave it at that. There are also 2D sections that aren’t designed well but are so short they dont have time to start getting annoying. You can also buy clothes at a store which dont do much but can be pretty funny to wear. One last criticism I have is that after taking a hit you cant restore health by grabbing a coin which has been a has been in every Mario game that has a health bar up to this point. The main objective getting moons is a blast since each moon either given to the player as an objective or is hidden for veterans to find while wandering around the kingdoms this game has to offer. Mario Odyssey is a great game that is only a few steps from perfect due to some missteps like the 2D sections, story and the life bar mechanics! Expand

Every world - called kingdom - is packed with details and gameplay, especially the transformations which replace the power up: Mario can use his cap to take control of various elements or ennemis. It’s technically beautiful, charming, innovative.

Nintendo made the formula a little bit different this time: the moons you collect can be easy or difficult depending on how far the player wants to go. There are so many... In other words, the player choose the difficulty. It can be frustrating, but the curious ones won’t have any problem looking around.

The game is enough to justify the Switch. It’s one of those industry changing games that you get every decade or so.

Again I just echo the majority of reviews on here

    The game is fantastic

Even my non game playing girlfriend is playing it

Its as easy or hard as you want it to be

Not going to give it a 10 as I don't believe any game can be perfect.... yet

The level design is very refined, making every aspect of a level in Mario Odyssey important in finding new collectables. Mario Odyssey has a fun way of keeping players engaged in new content constantly, there are 3 final bosses and each provide a true challenge. The environments are absolutely beautiful with kicking soundtracks to go with them which causes me and a lot of players to be in the right mood for this game. Mario has a new gameplay feature which is throwing his hat at enemies to control them, this is a smart move because this opens multiple gameplay opportunities for each level. The levels before the final Bowser battle are truly entertaining, and the 2 secret levels that are unlocked after saving peach are true challenges, truly amazing.

The only thing that keeps this game from getting a perfect 10 is that they reuse a lot of bosses after Bowser is defeated, you have to fight each Broodal a total of 4 times in the game and it gets a little annoying, but this is my only major complaint.

I rarely finish Mario games. A consequence of personally being poor at platforming,

That said, Mario Odyssey's suite of moves, transformations, colorful playgrounds, and numerous collectables saw me all the way through to credits.
And what a send off it was! I cannot recommend this game enough!

From The Cascade Kingdom to Moon Kingdom, I mostly had fun the whole way through. Amazing graphics, clever mechanics and enough content to last days. My only complaint is that the game lacks difficulty to entertain past new mechanics and graphics. Other than that, a game I recommend to all fans of Mario. Expand

I remember back in the day when I was a young kid, just played Super Mario Bros and got a Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64 as a christmas gift and how that blew my mind. Super Mario Odyssey wanted to give the same impression and the first impression was strong enough for me to buy Nintendo Switch.

Super Mario Odyssey's story is the same old Mario story: Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario's the one who has to save her. Nothing new but Mario platformers are not games to play because of the story. It's good enough that you have some motivation to go through the game.

After WiiU's Mario titles the gameplay in Odyssey has gone to the right direction. You get different sized kingdoms to explore and they differ from each other enough. Some are a little bit bigger with lots of possibilities to explore, other are a little bit smaller and maybe more linear. I liked that kingdoms don't feel like they were copy-pasted from each other. My main issue is that the kingdoms itselves are not connected by one big hub world. The Odyssey ship was kind a cool idea for faster traveling but I feel that SM64/Sunshine styled overworld would've made the exploration better.

I don't own a pro controller so I played my game using JoyCons. Controlls felt like they were polished but they were too sensitive for my taste. It didn't give me so much trouble in the regular run but in harder post-game missions I got frustrated. For example if there were a narrow path, Mario liked to run in wave motions. I don't know if the problem is with the JoyCons or in lack of my skills but it never felt that i could replicate same actions ever again.

Music - i just loved it. Especially the festival song. Music are composed well and they fit to the environment. I also liked the jukebox idea that you can pick any music in any part of the game and just roll with it. I stopped to use jukebox when I found out that dying resets the music. I wanted to lift my spirit in some harder parts but opening the jukebox each time you fell out of bounce made the option feel more like gimmick than addition to your experience.

The search for the power moons was fun but some power moons felt they were there just because. I don't say that there was too much power moons. It just felt that some missions could've left out or maybe it could've been better to make one more kingdom (or that hub world). Also I didn't like how post-game introduced new power moons. All the playthrough I was hoping that I get a new ability that opens older kingdoms in new way. Like in SM64 when you first time find the Red Cap Switch and remember that there was a red box in the Bob-Omb Battlefield. Revisiting older levels isn't a problem if you can feel how you've grown since you were first time there. And lack of that gave me thoughts "Why couldn't this power moon be here from the beginning".

Also another nitpicking subject: costumes. It was a nice addition to see Mario in different costumes but besides of few hidden power moons they felt pointless. I would give them a pass if possessed enemy would've had the same hat as you were wearing as Mario that time but possessed enemies always had a basic Mario cap. In my opinion there could've been less costumes and some kind of outfit bonus for excisting ones, like Cowboy Mario throws Cappy faster and Caveman Mario can break the rock boxes. Costumes were nice idea but considering how much coins post game costumes cost it just didn't fulfilled the purpose for me.

But after all nitpickings I've had, I still enjoyed and liked the game. Odyssey took the right steps from WiiU Mario games while keeping some of those elements. I truly enjoyed most of the kingdoms and, while I hated the swimming controls as Mario, my favourite was the Sea Kingdom because how the possessing right enemy can open the world differently. The game have lots of wide open areas to explore and almost always awards the player for exploring. My issues with the controls affect to my whole experience (I hated luring the Banzai Bill) but it won't change the fact that the game itself is great. Odyssey didn't give me the same end impression as SM64 back in the days but the game industry has evolved since then and now I'm older, so it's unfair to even make the comparison.

Super Mario Odyssey is a great game for the Nintendo Switch. If you own Nintendo Switch, you should buy the game. As a system seller game, I don't think it's as high as Breath of the Wild but still high enough to enjoy playful gameplay and witness the direction what Nintendo is currently taking.

Some being very simple to others being a bit more complex to get. The story is pretty basic Bowser takes Peach and you have to save her again like any Mario game. For this game the gameplay and exploration is what makes the game not the story. There are a variety of bosses that are unique. You will have to face the same bridals over and over as you progress through the story. The game is more enjoyable if you try to collect every shop coin and moon. That's were you will get the most out of this game. The last few levels will push your skills and be a bit harder than whats in most of the game. Music is pretty enjoyable and fits each world perfectly. I 100% recommend this game to anyone who has a switch. It can be a simple or complex platformer depending on what Moons you go for and has a joyful atmosphere surrounding it. Took me 85 hours to collect everything. There has been multiple updates since the games release for outfits and for an online mode call Balloon World. Balloon World is were the real challenges come into play. There are some easier challenges but you get to choose how hard they are. I'm sure there will be plenty more updated after this review is posted. Expand

This game is a very good Mario game. In fact, it's one of the best in my opinion. The fun and creativity in Mario games is huge, although the main quest is a bit short.

The new Mario is creative, fresh, and revolutionary. It twisted anything that remained stale and old on a platformer game, and presented this new way to play a Mario game. The only qualm that I have about this game is that it was a bit short.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a while now I have felt that Mario games were getting stale. They were always fun though since the Galaxy games every new entry felt the same with little creativity. Well it seems as though Nintendo finally let out their crazy ideas at once for Super Mario Odyssey as it is the most creative and wacky Mario game in ten years. To start, Super Mario Odyssey is a game that is simply pure fun. It is the modern day Super Mario 64 with tons of collectibles, great music, and colorful environments. The main thing that makes Mario Odyssey great is how fun it is to control Mario. He has many of the moves from past games such as the triple jump, long jump, and dive. But the thing that really adds more to this installment is the new hat character Cappy. Cappy allows Mario to make insane jumps and control his enemies making exploring each Kingdom exciting and unique from one another. The game's main story is short which may be disappointing though I feel the game really gets going after the final boss as each area gets filled with more power moons to collect and even a post game kingdom longtime fans are sure to love. Some of the areas in this game are undoubtedly the best in the Mario series. The best kingdoms are the largest ones such as New Donk City, Steam Gardens, Tostarena, and Mount Volbono. Though some Kingdoms are lackluster due to their small size and lack of areas to explore. There is one kingdom in particular later in the game that looked really unique aesthetically though there weren't many things to do in it which I felt was a really missed opportunity. There are some areas in this game where I felt Nintendo could have done more with.Super Mario Odyssey is probably the first game that really shows of what the Switch can do. The power moons are quick enough to get individually for handheld play but also satsfying to collect for long play sessions on the TV.. I also believe playing with the detached Joy cons is the best way to enjoy the game as they allow quick movement and allow you to target your cap throw to enemies, objects and collectibles. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is the most fun Mario game since the Galaxy games. It returns to the sandbox style of Mario 64 which makes the game feel familiar but the surprises of the kingdoms and capture abilities gives a much needed breath of fresh are for a franchise that was starting to feel generic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. In my opinion, it is the best Mario game of the franchise. All of the kingdoms are quite lovely and offers a great variety places to explore. It is what I consider to be the true sequel to Super Mario 64 from the Nintendo 64 era. Though, the main story is quite short and easy and can be completed in around an hour, that isn't what makes this game amazing. So if you're someone who doesn't like collectathons and trying to get every little thing then this game might not be for you, but for someone who loves to 100% games then this game will be perfect for you. There are over 850 moons in the game (maxing out at 999 moons including the ones you buy from the shops infinitely) and most kingdoms have regional coins which you collect to buy stickers or props for your Odyssey (usually 50 or 100 regional coins per kingdom). The game is NOT perfect in any way, and that's the only reason why it doesn't get a 10 from me. Just to say though, that is not a bad thing to say about a fantastic game like this, I want games that are not perfect already as it'll give room for improvement in the next lineup in Mario games. You will get a TON of hours out of this game, as I currently have around 700 moons and already have 52 hours into the game. Solid game, definitely worth the $60 you must pay for it. Expand

Almost every level in this game is gold. From sand kingdom's sprawling expanses to metro kingdom's hustle and bustle to luncheon kingdom's food -themed delight, every new kingdom holds a new suprise.

    Mechanics

Cappy is a wonderful addition to the cast of this game, and as mario's companion, he has a lot of cool moves. my personal favorite is his ability to possess many of the game's enemies. controling timeless enemies like the Goomba, Bullet Bill and Chain Chomp is a blast, and many of the boss fights are desinged with this mechanic in mind.

    Story

This game's story is pretty basic. Bowser has kidnapped Peach so that he can marry her, and Mario and Cappy have to stop him. over the course of the game he steals many wedding-related items from the kingdoms, such as a ring from the Sand Kingdom, a Dress from the Lake Kingdom, and so on.

    Conclusion

I'd say this game is very, very good. the only problem that I have with it is that it's maybe a little too easy, and by that I mean the actual story part of the game is a little to easy, but that's about it. thanks for reading my review. bye!

Overall, this game was great, the graphics are great, the game-play is smooth, and none the less, it's an open world Super Mario game. I would love to see some actual plot from one of these types of games. I do enjoy just running around different kingdoms and trying to jump from x position to y position to see if it's possible, and it is fun, but after you have collected every single power moon in the game, that's all you can really do, besides starting a new game. This game does have its replay values though. If you have a Nintendo Switch, Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are a must have. I think overall 2017 has been a great year for Nintendo, and I would love to see more games like this come out for the Switch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved this game, but a few flaws (and the extreme frustration of Darker Side) made me give it a 9.

    Cons:
    1: Difficulty
Now, I had no problems with how the game is too easy and I think that it was a medium challenge (but I am slightly sad that there aren't higher difficulties, but most Mario games don't have them, so I ignore this) but then Darker Side has to come and frustrate me beyond belief with no checkpoints and a pretty difficult challenge.
    2: inconsistencies:
I had a few small problems with this through my playthrough, like how I throw the cap, hold Y and dive but I don't dive, or how I clipped through a wall as one of those cloud things in the Snow Kingdom (or the Ice Kingdom, I forgot its name) when the other side of the wall that it was part of was fine. Honestly, these barely impacted me, but I decided to mention them anyways.

    Pros:
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.: Basically everything else:

It is an understatement to say that I loved this game. The art style, the music, the gameplay, and the content level (most importantly the gameplay) were all things that made me come back for weeks after I got the game with the Switch along with Splatoon 2 (I never played Splatoon 1, and Splatoon 2, or Spla2n as I jokingly call it, is also great) and also get more games for the Switch, like Arms and Darkest Dungeon!
    Summary:
I really loved the game and you should get it.

This game was awesome I feel that all the levels where fun and I think that all them had a good amount of moons even though there is a ton of them you only need about 120ish to get to bowser. But if you only go for the ending then you are missing out on an amazing package of charm and fun and it does make this game a bit of a "its not the destination its the journey" type games this would be a bigger problem if the journey wasn't so much fun there are so many new races or species or whatever. The controls where perfect and I felt at no time that when I died it was the game's fault when I died I felt like I made a mistake. Speaking of controls I found the motion controls pretty fun as well but this is probaly because I used the sperated JoyCons and not the ProControler so if you want to use a ProControler then you probally wont enjoy them as much the ideal way to play is with the JoyCons. There is something that gives the games controls the extra step to being perfection is Cappy. In this game your new sidekick is the hat ghost thing Cappy. With a press of the Y button or a flick of the JoyCon you can toss out your Felt Friend and grab coins and kill small baddies. The reason he only kills small foes is because when thrown at a normal sized enemies is that when Cappy is thrown at them he will "Capture" them, but its more like possesion because you go inside there bodies and take control of there brains. This adds a fun new twist onto gameplay and makes some fun boss battles based around these Captures. Another thing you can do with Cappy is when he is thrown you can dive onto him which will give you a bounce then you can dive again to get some serious style points this can used to get to seemingly impossible areas. How about the worlds you use these controls in well they are fairly compact with tons of moons they really remind me of Banjo Kazzoie but with like way more jiggys they are fun to traverse and have memorable NPCs and locals. All around I would say Mario Odyssey is my favorite game of 2017 even more than Breath of the Wild Expand

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
