    Super Mario Odyssey is a great game to get for your kids, so long as they aren't easily frustrated by awkward camera controls or Mario running as though he's on ice or slipperier ice the entire game. The main challenge is figuring out how to make Mario do what you want him to do without facing the wrong way, succumbing to inertia, or throwing your cap-panion in the wrong direction. The main challenge is figuring out how to make Mario do what you want him to do without facing the wrong way, succumbing to inertia, or throwing your cap-panion in the wrong direction. I am astonished, quite frankly, that other reviews have touted the responsiveness of the title character in this game. My experience was quite the opposite. Dexterity and patience with the camera controls, that is, are your main opponents in the game.

    The puzzles-- the parts of the game I wish were challenging-- are remarkably simple and the basic story is dull, repetitive, and short (not to speak of its depressingly archaic gender roles, Mayor Pauline notwithstanding). After my initial interest in the main conceit (Cappy controlling your enemies; more on that later) I became more and more disappointed with what the game had to offer. I was not compelled to explore any of the worlds because everything I found was basic, and, eventually, without joy. After the closing credits I read Cappy's exhortation to explore more worlds and gladly exited to the Home screen to close the software, never to open it again.

    The one shining point of this game is the main conceit of Cappy. Being able to take control of the various enemies that Mario has faced over the years (and a few other beasties as well) had me grinning for the first several hours of play. This too became tedious after a while, but those few hours are enough to make me think that children will be captivated by this game for quite some time. The puzzles may be challenging enough to maintain their interest, the Candyland graphics may enchant them, and they may not be disappointed with the terrible controls.

    So the gameplay was fun and all but what really pissed me off was the story:
    You play this little man trying to save a princess from this bowser chad who wants to "force"-marry her to him (isn't this a bit **** up by itself?) and after you went through all those worlds to find out that bowser stole something special from each world for the wedding, you arrive at the moon to crash the wedding bowser spent so much time setting up (I still don't understand how the princess kept wanting to be rescued after all the nice things bowser got for her) After the player beats bowser, the pricess doesn't even thank mario or anything and just leaves him hanging while bowser gets rejected as well after they both try to "win" her by offering flowers. The ending ruined the whole buildup in my opinion.

    Right lets get the good bit done. It is an absolutely stunning production. The game at times felt like a masterpiece of imagination. The people that came up with some of the ideas and the excecution of those ideas was perfect.

    Graphically it was really fantastic, a really fun game world although NPC design was rubbish.

    Music, with the exception of the end of New Donk City level, which everone knows and is a fantastic song, I literally can't remember the music to this game.

    Gameplay, I found the controls weren't my favourite and occasionally a wall next to me would fill my entire screen and block my view at times causing me to manuever, which in some levels was really annoying. Just something grated on me a bit with the controls and made it feel very sluggish.

    OK, so my review is probably up around 7/10, so why 5/10? I base all of my reviews on a fun to cost ratio and the fun just wasn't there. Here are the downsides.

    A good few of the levels were boring and not very nice in design. Felt like they were fillers to add length to the game.

    The whole game felt very fetch questy. Instead of typical platformer action it was a permanent moon quest. Being told find more moons to move on but I've been all over this level and bored of exploring it now - tough, go find more moons.

    I was so excited when I got to New Donk City but I didn't enjoy playing the level (until the end). When I got to the end of the level though it was amazing and I remember being shocked at how brilliant and fun it was.

    New Donk City felt like an amazing game end finale but it wasn't and going back to normal levels after that was totally deflating and I was starting to want the game to end. I wanted to complete it and I did and it just dragged from this point. I think I may have scored higher if they skipped straight from New Donk to the last level and made a shorter game that didn't drag.

    Again like New Donk City, the last level was amazing, I won't spoil it but it was a grand excecution of imagination again but when the game finished it just put a sort of new level and boss challenges and left it feeling like I had more to do and uncompleted, I was getting too bored to play more and the completion that was satisfying and funny, now felt incomplete again, I found myself running around the end world wishing it wasn't there.

    I don't think the levels were as much fun as Mario Galaxy and it didn't have the frantic, fast fun of Mario 1 and 3. It got tiresome and felt repetitive as the objectives were tons of mini fetch quests and not level completion.

    I feel a bit mean rating a 5 because two of the level ends, were two of my favourite moments in gaming and the ideas and production were out of this world but two perfect monents and great ideas didn't make the entire rest of the game fun. If those two brilliant parts didn't exist this probably would have been a 3/10.

    A game filled with great ideas, totally hampered by boring, repetitive gameplay. A shame really, so much lost potential.

    I'm not a fan of Mario nor paltform games but since this game the "Must play" seal of Metacritic I've decided to give it a try.

    First Mario game i've played in my life and didn't like it that much. Only played for 5 hours. I don't see anything special in it. Honestly i think is overhyped because of the nostalgia that revolves around it.

The music just fell flat in many situations it just didn’t fit some areas like in the final area where you play as bowser and have to destroy 4 pillars while the song is good it just does not fit what is happening in the game. Honeylune ridge is an exception, but that’s because they had already done space extremely well and the remix of star chance fits extremely well. The collectibles are also lackluster. The purple coins are basically where normal coins would be in a different 3D Mario but they are better than the power moons. Power moons replace stars in this game ambit are something entirely different instead of a star that is the focus of the levels the power moon are a collectible that are at best at the end of a plat forming Challenge or after a boss fight, but at worst a chore that are under the ground or just around a corner the worst of these are the dog and nut stars which just require waiting and are tedious. Moons are just not satisfying to collect cause the only reward is more moons. Stars in other Mario games are satisfying to collect because their challenging and their is buildup to the stars. Moons in odyssey are where one ups would be in in other 3D Mario. Idk Mario odyssey just doesn’t have the same magic its much more joyful and lacks the depth of the other 3D Mario’s while before they had characters like rosalina who had an optional story and it was sad. Mario galaxy had a sadness to it that makes Mario odyssey look like an illumination film. The kingdoms are also not that memorable and really short in the main run through of the game each kingdom feels insanely short if you get only the required amount of moons, but getting more that the required amount of moons is tedious and feels like looking through a wasteland of a kingdom to find a random moon on a ledge. A lot of the moons are very similar making the game feel the same throughout. It is also painfully easy speedrunning the game is fun becuase the movenment is fun not because the game is fun. While other 3D Mario’s are about platforming challenges odyssey feels like a trek that goes nowhere and is barely satisfying my urge to do challenging things which are not to be found in odyssey. I understand if you like the game, but for me it was good but not greater other like other 3D Mario’s except sunshine and 3D land. Expand

With blander environments that are either too blocky or flat, many Power Moons being located in easy-to-find areas (even just being available to BUY with the in-game currency, meaning you can just grind for coins to get them), a FEW good songs in the soundtrack with the rest being quite forgettable and barely that much difficulty besides the Dark and Darker sides of the Moon (two places that you can visit after beating the main piss-easy game might I add) I don't think this game lives up to games like the Galaxy Duology, or even Sunshine or 64 (despite being a successor to the latter two games). I would have accepted the game if the main quest was easy if the post game was easy, but no. The post game is easier than the main quest. That has to be some kind of joke. Not even the final level was that hard. There were only a few times I genuinely had fun which were the 8-bit gravity shrine in the Mushroom Kingdom and when you get to be Bowser. The problems of that game being that it is:
    -Easy, but I mean TOO EASY, even a 3 years old would be able to complete it. Mario Galaxy was aimed at a young audience, but atleast it was a bit challenging, I don't say no to such easy difficulty, but give us the possibility to choose for a higher difficulty for the a little more "extreme" players;
    -Bland and empty, the level design is so awful and honestly, it hurts me to say that but even another mediocre Sonic game known as Sonic Forces had a better level design. Well, the bad level design is especially in the overworld, when you enter one special stage it gets a little better, but that's not saying much;
    -The story, no comment it's just bad;
    -The music is inexistant;
    -Open World/Collectathon don't mix well with platformers. I think that many can agree that the base idea was bad, Zelda BOTW was a lot less hated because the base idea wasn't awful. Zelda BOTW is using the Dark Souls formula and is beautiful, making up for an excellent open world. Mario Odyssey, looks, feels and pretty is boring, empty and soulless. The team working for Mario Odyssey clearly have never done a single open world/sandbox/collectathon before and this is where comes the incompetency;
    -It is full of nostalgia and that's pretty much why it gets much praise, honestly it doesn't make it bad, but I wanted to point it out;
    -No charm, at all;
    -Overall boring: See points stated before;

    I'm also expecting some sort of censorship on Metacritic, especially considering that there are 223 negative ratings for 16 negative reviews, while there are 89 mixed ratings for 49 mixed reviews. I might be paranoid, but if my review happen to disappear, hopefully you will remember it.
    And please guys, understand that this game is not as good as you make it look like, again I didn't go in dept with my review, but many other people did successfully tell you what was wrong with it.
    Honestly this game is not a proper sequel to SM64, the DS version of the game was more of a sequel to be entirely honest.

    Gameplay:
    The puzzles on each level are very easy. You don't feel smart for solving them and there is little to no feeling of joy after completing them. However the game is still a "challenge" due to the controls being so badly designed in this game. More often than not Mario runs in the wrong direction, jumps late, or falls off edges. The way he moves have an acceleration that is way off for a feeling of controll and arcade. The camera makes you loose depth and often take control and force you to look in a direction where it's not really necessary and is in sabotages more than it helps.

    Graphics and visuals:
    The graphics is the best thing about this game. They are very nice and good looking. Every level looked unique and has many characters. Animations are nothing short of perfect. Vfx is awesome and 3D models are of quality. Simply very well done and beautiful.

    Conclusion:
    Over all this is a game worth playing if you don't have anything else to play. But it's a backwards designed game, where it's being more frustrating to play than it is challenging your intellect as a player. The hard part is not marios mission, it's to make him do what you want. But while struggling you'll see very polished visuals.

    While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.
