This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe I'm a pretty positive person but I can be negative at times. That being said I LOVE Super Mario Odyssey. I've never played a 3d Mario game but I did a whole lot of research and learned that 3d Mario's were getting more and more linear, so people were excited for this. Then came E3, I thought the game looked amazing during the trailer and the gameplay, I was super hyped. I wasn't as into it as Splatoon 2 only because Splatoon 2 was coming out later and Mario + Rabbids was leaked. During the week before it's release I was way too hyped and I'm happy to say that it lived up to that hype. It's approachable and the exploration rewards you for everything you do. For example, the fact that you don't take any fall damage just rewards players. It's fun, as you know this review contains spoilers because of this line. When I entered the Forgotten Kingdom I was ecstatic that it was only about exploration and nothing else. That only scratches the surface of what I like about this game and love about this game but to not make this review too long I'm gonna stop here. So I give Super Mario Odyssey a 10/10 Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I Have put over 35 hours into this game and I have to say that it is amazing.
Unlike more recent popular gaming titles, Super Mario Odyssey has so much more to do.
The difficulty starts out pretty easy in the beginning so you can master the controls. Closer to the end is where more complicated things start to appear and the final area is near impossible.
If you are devoted, you can easily put in over 100 hours of fun into this game.

How can you give something you enjoyed a 0? Simple stupidity, that's how. Okay, so the cap idea is inspired if not perfect. Visually the game impresses also. The switch shows what it is capable of in the right hands and other developers should take note. Yes, it's not exactly a challenge, but the Mario games have always been about fun and letting your inner child remember why you got into gaming in the first place. There is much fun to have here. If you expect a game designed for adults, look elsewhere. If you are looking for something that can put a smile on your face and also plays really well, then give this a go. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is absolutely mind-blowing. Beautiful graphics and I really see that Nintendo has truly created the best Mario game so far. It is an amazing game and I don't see why being easy is bad. The game has a high skill ceiling. Well, first I'll explain what a skill ceiling is. A skill ceiling is a point where any improvements you make are unnoticeable. And it's awesome how assist mode works. I've played through the game twice, once with the assist and once without it, and it does really help. It's the only switch game I play now, and I literally haven't taken out its gamecard since I got the game. I literally got up, applauded, and whistled at the credits, and it's seriously cool. I love the sheer amount of content, and describing how amazing this game is would take well over 5000 characters. Let's run through what you can and can't do here. THIS IS THE PART WITH SPOILERS!
Capture a T-rex and run around smashing stuff? Check.
Throw hats at, jump on, toss bombs at, and spin down onto evil cartoon rabbits? Check.
Go on for 3 hours, scavenge 6 kingdoms, and leave 20 moons richer? Check.
Go on for 10 minutes, search 1 kingdom, and leave 2 moons richer? Check.
Come back after the credits roll and find a weird metal box that shines? Check.
Open the box, which hides like 20 moons? Check.
Giggle at the final cutscene before the credits? Check.
Hammer, bomb, and peck a giant rabbit-bot? Check.
Possess random character that give you cool powers? Check.
Ground pound a Gushen lower than it spawns, stand on its spawn zone, and have it spawn underwater?
    Check.
Capture said Gushen, glitch through a wall, and zoom off? Check, although they should probably fix that.
Throw your hat at Bowser, capture him, and take off running through a collapsing moon? Check.
Visit Peach in all the kingdoms? Check.
Puzzle over devilishly hard hint art, crouch through pipes trying to find that last moon, and end up going on a 6-hour mooning spree? Check... that came out wrong *cough* mooning spree *cough*

I never experienced the older Mario games, as this is my second 3-D single player Mario platformer. However, being a Game Historian, I have noticed the combination of new ideas, controls, and advanced movement with nostalgic bosses and gameplay, a feat achieved by many of the newer Triple A titles on the Switch. The persistence of the spirit of the old games continues to live on.

Bowser kidnaps the princess, this time so he can force her to marry him, and it's Mario's job to stop him. The graphics really show off what the Switch is capable of, there wasn't any noticeable slowdown in handheld or docked mode. The only problem is that this game drains your battery fast, and after about 2 hours of gameplay, I went from 100% to 30%. The music is fantastic, some of the best music Mario has ever offered. The game is easy to control and as you play, you will learn all the tricks you can do to maneuver Mario around. The worlds in this game are unique and fun to explore, I think my favorite was New Donk City. The enemies in this game are very well designed, with new and returning characters for Mario to possess with his hat, all of which are very fun to use. My only real issue with the game is that it's very easy, the lives have been taken out and instead you lose 10 coins every time you die. In fact, it's actually impossible to get a game over the game will just keep you at 0 coins if you lose them all. This isn't really a bad thing because I died a lot. But at the same time, I felt there was no real penalty for dying. Overall, it's quite a masterpiece that I think everyone will enjoy. Expand

With its sandbox-like levels evocative of Super Mario 64 and its new novel "CAPture" mechanic, Odyssey successfully mixes the old with the new.

I had wonderful time playing Super Mario Odyssey and while I completed the main story fairly quickly there are still many many power moons to find and secrets to uncover. The game is not particularly difficult, however the challenge comes in the form of collecting all of the power moons which act as a fuel powering the Odyssey, a ship that takes you from place to place in the world. Some of the power moons can be found just lying around in plain sight while others require a lot of effort. And these things are EVERYWHERE! It really makes you want to explore every nook and cranny of the levels as you may be rewarded for your efforts.

Control wise there are a lot of different ways you can play Odyssey. The game nudges you in the direction of detached Joy-Con, but you don't need to use this control scheme to get the full experience. I usually play using both Joy-Con in the grip and do just fine.

The "CAPture" mechanic mixes things up from the usual Mario fare offering some really unique opportunities for interacting with the environment and enemies. In one level you might have to scale a tall structure by taking control of a little seed creature that can extend its legs very high letting you get to otherwise unreachable places. At another time you might be taking control of a tank and laying waste to your enemies. This variety makes the game feel varied and interesting.

The world of Super Mario Odyssey is split up into Kingdoms each with their own unique enemies, styles or climates. You will want to explore all of these as they are beautiful to behold and cleverly designed. A lot of loving detail is packed in the worlds as you will find nods to classic Mario games and fun secrets. One of my favorite features of Odyssey are the 2-D segments that are found in unexpected places.

One interesting aspect of Odyssey is the customizability of Mario's wardrobe. Each kingdom that Mario visits offers up the opportunity to buy an outfit that goes along with the locale. And the outfits aren't just for looks, in some cases a certain outfit can help you complete quests for power moons.

I could go on and on about Super Mario Odyssey and while I have talked a lot about the game there are so many more interesting things waiting to be discovered. in the end I highly recommend Odyssey to anyone who owns a Switch. You will not be disappointed.

Super Mario Odyssey is perhaps the greatest Mario game I've ever played. It's a must have for any switch owner, and if you don't have a switch, this should be the game that sets you over the edge to get one.

First there are the superficial stuff, looks, sounds, smells, tastes etc.

The visuals are so wonderfully stylized, ditching the "plastic" vibe from 3D world and Mario + Rabbids (which are still great in their own right) for a more realistic - yet still cartoon-y feel. There's so much polish and flair, yet it still remains technically and mechanically accurate. I don't have much more to say for this one, but just know that they're fantastic!

The soundtrack is bar none the best in any Mario game to date, with just about every song perfectly matching it's environment, while being great as standalone songs too! The obvious highlight being Jump Up! Superstar, which has quickly become one of my favorite video game songs. And the sound design is as high quality as you would expect from a Nintendo game, with quite a few being taken from previous installments. Not that it's a bad thing, of course.

The story is about what you'd expect from a Mario game. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and mainly only exists to tie up the whole experience, but that's okay! You don't play Mario games for the story, so I can't say that it was a disappointment. It's fine. I'd quicker say it was above average, than below.

Then there are the Controls, which are by far the best in the series.

Mario's main move-set controls so smoothly, with new moves like the roll - a great and satisfying way to get around quickly. Then there's the ground pound jump, which DID originate in 3D world, but given that games more linear structure, it wasn't particularly helpful. Now though, it's the easiest way to get the most out of your jump. Then there are returning moves, like the triple jump, which is the most forgiving to preform it's ever been, and the dive, which we'll talk more about later. The only casualty this time would be the side flip, which is a bit harder to do now that 8-directional movement is gone, but isn't much of a problem after the first hour or two.

This, is the best new addition to Odyssey - Cappy. Cappy is like a cross between the punch from 64, F.L.U.D.D. from sunshine, and the luma from galaxy. You can throw him on the ground as an attack, or in the air as a course corrector, then use the aforementioned new and improved dive to jump onto Cappy, then throw him, and dive again. This simple move set opens up a HUGE range of possibilities, in fact there have already been discoveries of incredibly precise shortcuts, some intentional, some not.

The motion controls are where things get a little bit controversial though. I personally think they were handled pretty well, not great, but just fine. Shaking the joy-con/pro controller allows you to roll faster, use a homing attack with Cappy, and all around play more efficiently; but at no point are you required to use them. The only problem is that shaking the entire system in handheld mode doesn't feel too great, and thus you always feel like your at a disadvantage when using said mode. Though unless you're doing a speed run, it really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Finally, the most important part, the gameplay.

Mario Odyssey goes back to the style of 64 and Sunshine. Instead of going the galaxy route, where there are tons of levels, all being linear platforming challenges, containing a couple of stars, there are a lot fewer, open worlds, each containing quite a few of the games main collectibles, power moons. Dozens of these guys are scattered all across every kingdom, some you get for solving puzzles, some for exploration, and some for completing challenges.

Now time for the main game-play "gimmick" of Odyssey, being the ability to capture enemies. It's amazing how they managed to make almost all of them feel so great to control. Each kingdom has it's own few capture-able enemies; they don't drag on with any of them either, they're always quickly moving on to the next one before the previous one gets stale. Throughout the game they make you use every capture in a plethora of unique and creative ways, forcing you to know the ins and outs of how each one works.

In conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey is a blast from beginning to end. I'd have to give it a 9.8/10, but seeing as how I have to choose between a 9 and a 10, I opted for 10. While I don't think it deserves a 10 per-say, (but what game does?) giving it a mere 9 would be criminal. Go get this game right now.

When this was first announced I can confidently say I had an incredible amount of faith in this game. As time passed and the switch was released, the hype continued, waiting to play the first 3d sandbox Mario game on the go. E3 only added to the hype with Nintendo's direct trailer, and announcement that the game would arrive in November. Here we are now, with a game of the year nomination on our hands. A real amazement to play. The game's opening doesn't take its time. Tutorials are fluently integrated into the beginning of the game. Introducing you to a wide variety of controls, that can fluctuate your playing style from simple to complex in a matter of button presses. With one of the most clean control schemes I have ever played a game with. Not only do the controls make the game a real charm, but the art style is one to remember. The HD graphics of the switch enable Mario's adventure to look incredible. From the waterfalls of the Cascade Kingdom, the bustling city of the metro kingdom, the tasty colors of the Luncheon Kingdom, to the rolling hills of the Mushroom Kingdom and more this game delivers an amazing presentation. Not only looking amazing no matter your location but introducing new characters and features that will hopefully become staples of Mario games to come. Only adding to the spectacular experience of the gameplay. With the already amazing controls the gameplay only makes them show even better. Your pace of playing through the game can differ so much based on where you go in the sprawling lands this game has to offer. Play through the game gathering as much moons as you can find. Or speed through, using specific hat tricks and jumps to hurry your way through the game to beat it as fast as possible. Moons (the games main item you need to find in order to progress) are scattered across every nook and cranny of every kingdom. Your means of finding them can range from simply finding a location. To playing mini levels within the worlds, which can be 2d or 3d. Or completing side quests for the residents and tourists of each location in order to choose your own path to completion. Giving a major boost in the replay value department. Not only that, but the game is crammed with features to 100 percent, and complete giving the gamer much more than the admittedly short story. After beating the game, you can unlock 3 new kingdoms (The Dark Side, Darker Side, and the Mushroom Kingdom) all with moons to find and levels to beat. With worlds gaining a massive overhaul of new moons. So your new worlds can feel new again as challenges are laid before you. With 880 moon to collect. 100 or 50 purple coins to collect in each kingdom to get in game rewards. Along with in game coins, the ones you know from other Mario games, being able to purchase a wide arrangement of outfits. Ranging from classing nostalgic clothing featured in your favorite games. To new and creative outfits, to, dressing Mario up in peaches wedding dress......
In all seriousness, the amazing gameplay, art style, range of features, and swift controls. Create this amazement in gaming anybody with a switch should have, or is worth getting a switch for.

    A tribute to 64
Super Mario 64, one of, if not the most loved 3D platformer of all time set the standards, along with Crash Bandicoot, of what this type of game should be. They set the bar high, and not many other titles have been able to reach it, let alone exceed it. Along with games such as the remastered Crash Bandicoot "N-Sane Trilogy" and "A Hat In Time" This particular 3D platform feels like a special tribute in honour of the 3D Platforming era of the mid-to-late 90s. It's smooth gameplay, remarkable graphics and it's cute and charming story makes this game what it is, and the possession cap ability adds an extra layer of gameplay. The hidden collectibles on each map makes every space used for something that isn't just platforming. Overall, this game is a beautiful, remarkable achievement in gaming history, and it's selling fast, as well as the console.

    OVERALL VERDICT:

    10/10 - Masterpiece

It's amazing graphics, attention to detail and smooth, responsive controls makes this game shine through all the other titles of this year. It's beautiful soundtrack makes it stand out, and it is an essential game to buy in the new year.

Merry Christmas to you all! And KEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP Gaming!

Cappy. He can capture ALMOST ANYTHING. Even a hand in the Knucklotec fight, to revive the feel of punching goombas.
The number of moons. 833 not including Crazy Cap ones. I salute those people who 100%ed this game, as there is so much content.

Crazy Cap stores. Tired of regular ol' Mario? If you earn enough kingdom specific purple coins, you can buy a new outfit for Mario. There are a total of 42 outfits and 41 hats.

The difficulty progression. As you get further into the game, the difficulty increases. Take the Cascade Kingdom and compare it to the Darker Side for example. You probably get it now.

I've been adding lots of pros, and I don't want to add more because it would take a long time.

Cons: Not really many. The number of moons would go here too because there are way too many.

I love this game so much First one thing people seem to bash on about is the difficulty, some say its the same old 2d game slapped into a 3d game.2 Words you are wrong first its a Mario game just look at Mario galaxy 2 and tell me that the final boss is even partly hard and I will face palm myself.Just tell me how you could compare that final boss to you freaking possessing a trex in the 2nd world thats about 11 or 12 kingdom's before the final boss the final boss,Some say its total old content. When in reality have you possessed a tank, yoshi,a trex, and Bowser!Or get chased by a trex in new donk city. Then later have a section where you go pixel mode and play jump man aka donkey kon the first game Mario aka Jumpman debuted in?In fact the only reason I consider giving it a 9 is because of the motion controls and thats it.Added Sarcastic remark The games totally easy its not like every single technique has its situation use which takes time to practice and the fact every transformation has a limit you have to go and find a way to make it useful example People who don't know how every transformation is useful someway:Oh look a useless goomba it can't jump high it's useless.People who do know how every transformation has a use:Hm a goomba what should I do.1 minute later finally I stacked 100 goomba now I can jump to the sky. Also side note for people who don't know you lose 10 coins and you can buy stuff with it in a non mario rpg game! With previous installments of 3D Mario games taking a more linear approach (Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World), Super Mario Odyssey charts a new, yet familiar, direction by encouraging players to explore large sandbox levels packed with collectibles. Not only are there Power Moons (the main collectible in the game) scattered everywhere in each level, there are also coins one can use to purchase clothing, and purple coins to purchase level specific materials. The new and main mechanic of the game is using Mario's hat and companion, Cappy, to take over enemies and utilize their abilities to further explore and discover each area. The game also allows players to play at their own pace and to control the extent of their exploration. If the player explores and takes risks they are rewarded with Power Moons, coins, and extra challenges. Don't expect anything new story-wise (this is a Mario game after all). The focus is the game play and level design; and they are both phenomenal. If you are a fan of Super Mario 64 and the several 3D platform collectible games that are like it, Super Mario Odyssey is cut from the same cloth and you will enjoy it. Super Mario really takes us back to when Mario was known as the king of gaming. Recently with 3D world and 3D land Mario took a bit of a dip with creativity but his comeback has never been more glorious. I feel like mario odyssey is a general mix of 64, sunshine and galaxy (the true mario classics). Mario odysseys plot hasn't changed in the fact that you are still rescuing Princess PeachSuper Mario really takes us back to when Mario was known as the king of gaming. Recently with 3D world and 3D land Mario took a bit of a dip with creativity but his comeback has never been more glorious. I feel like mario odyssey is a general mix of 64, sunshine and galaxy (the true mario classics). Mario odysseys plot hasn't changed in the fact that you are still rescuing Princess Peach but nevertheless nobody plays mario for the plot anyway. Odyssey takes the standard platform genre and turns it into a sandbox styled environment. Mario will travel the globe going to numerous kingdoms of willd and abstract themes such as the luncheon kingdom which is a rainbow delicacy world or the seaside kingdom where the oceans are made of fizzy water. Each kingdom is PACKED with creativity and charm and most of them are giant. Some kingdoms are smaller and has less exploration value such as the cascade and lake kingdoms but the majority are gigantic. The main motive for travelling to these worlds is that Bowser is collecting possessions and relics from these kingdoms to use at the wedding where he will be officially married to the princess and Mario must go on a wild chase through each kingdom trying to catch his "minions". This is another thing that the game does extraordinarily well the koopa kids are scrapped and no longer exist and have been replaced by "the broodals" a play on words of "the brutals" and "Bride" and are the head party planners of the wedding. It's genuinely lovely to see a new type of mainline enemy because lets be honest, we all knew that the koopa kids were getting really old really fast. The boss fights however are the very standard 3 hit phase bosses we find in many games but especially mario. Each boss must be hit 3 times and each one of them will make the boss battle harder but the chances of you dying are slim, the bosses are really easy, granted this is a kids game but there's a difference between easy and a complete pushover (which they were) however some kingdoms have a regional boss that can only be found in that kingdom aside from the broodals such as a giant squid or mechanical flower machine??? Like I said the creativity in this game is astronomical so the bosses are bound to be creative. Although they are easy there is a certain post game activity where you will fix this problem. The game isn't meant to focus heavily on story. instead it focuses on exploration and diving (quite literally!) into every nook and cranny of the kingdom, if you want to rush through the story you can do it in an hour, but that's if you are properly speed-running, the game WANTS you to explore so if that's not your thing you may find the game disappointing. Aswell as a game of endless creativity, new enemys and boss battles and reminiscing to the days or classic Mario, Odyssey has the biggest move set ever in a Mario game, the amount of tricks and parkour you can play around with in this game is mind blowing. To list a few: Dive, roll, cap jump, cap dive, cap roll, ground-pound-jump, twirl, double jump, and many many more. The main attraction however is the brand new capture ability which REALLY puts the cherry on the cake, early in the game a hat creature from the cap kingdom takes control of marios cap after it gets shredded to pieces creating basically a living mario hat. Throwing your hat at an enemy will allow you to essentially dive into their body and take control of them. As you can imagine this opens tons of possibility's! You can be a bullet bill to soar through the skies, play as a hammer bro or goomba, swim through lava as a lava bubble and my personal favourite is that you can be dinosaur and rampage through the lands of cascade kingdom! The games main collectables are called power moons and they are used to power up the odyssey (your ship) there are absolutely tons in each kingdom and in some there are even over 100 to collect, there are a grand total of 999 moons to collect which are even more than korok seeds in zelda so there's plenty to do there. Another collectable are regional coins which are different designs for each kingdom, you can use these to purchase stickers or souvenirs for the odyssey. Collecting regular coins allows you to buy outfits for Mario including some really nifty original styles in the post-game. Talking about post-game, the post-game has huge value, probably one of the biggest I've seen. Most of the moons dont become available until after the ending is unlocked and a few more tricks and appearances become available including some new kingdoms which is a delight because in a game as short as odyssey you need tons of post-game value which is delivered well. There is a mode called snapshot mode where you can freeze the game and take wonderful pictures with countless filters which can then be used for mobile or desktop backgrounds.
In general odyssey is a switch mustbuy, great exploration, outstanding creativity and an absolute joy to play keeping you hooked for ages

One of THE best Mario games, heck, even the best! The movement was smooth and felt extremely satisfying, it was easy to pick up, held plenty (if not too much) moons, and there was no shortage of things to do. While some kingdoms were better than others, and some outfits were dull, and some linear sections, this is still a fantastic game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of my favorite Mario games of all time. This is actually competing with Galaxy 1 as my favorite and I thought that would never happen. Each kingdom in this game is absolutely great to explore. Nintendo still uses the traditional grass, snow, and lava level, but it has a twist this time. (Spoilers ahead) In the Moon Kingdom, you explore the surface of the moon and then you enter a cave which is the lava part of the level. This is inside of the moon or the core of it. Mario controls the best by far out of any Mario game yet. This is a small adjustment, but Mario can now turn while in a long jump. This is a great speedrunning game. Expand

Odyssey looks like a straight successor to the Mario 64 and Sunshine line of sandbox 3D Marios, but it is much more than that. Naturally, it evokes, honors, and is sometimes directly inspired by the games that came before it in its characters, music, and mechanics. But it also has new things to say as well, like fusing classic-style 2D gameplay with the 3D world and using a completely new possession mechanic to add constant variety to Mario’s abilities and exploits.

That possession power, embodied by Mario’s new sidekick/headwear Cappy, is Odyssey’s big new idea. In keeping with Nintendo’s decades-long tradition of charmingly nonsensical storylines, he’s a hat with a soul, and he’s teamed up with Mario in order to rescue his sister Tiara who… wait for it... has been kidnapped by Bowser along with Princess Peach. (I said it was charming, not original.) Cappy’s power allows you to possess many other characters by throwing Mario’s hat at them, which bizarrely slurps Mario’s physical body inside of the enemy and gives you full control over their powers. Cappy’s also used as a jumping pad and a weapon, sparing Mario’s tuchus from an untold number of butt-stomps this time around (though you can still do that, if you wish). Many of the cleverest and most smile-inducing possessions are best left to be discovered for yourself, but whether it was thrashing about as a huge, realistic-looking T-rex in the prehistoric-themed Cascade Kingdom or becoming a lowly Goomba but then making a stack of Goombas 10-tall to win over a hard-to-impress Lady Goomba, Odyssey mixes up the gameplay in surprising ways in each of its 16-plus worlds. Throughout the entire campaign, you’re using new creatures in new, game-changing ways on a regular basis.

Odyssey’s inspired integration of 2D gameplay – complete with Super Mario Bros.-era 8-bit art – deserves special mention. Entering into a pixelated pipe in the 3D space transports you to a side-scrolling 2D challenge that takes place on the surface of an object in the world, almost like Link’s 2D transformation in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Most of these sequences aren’t too long – I wished they were longer, in fact – but each blends pure, weapons-grade retro gameplay with numerous other callbacks while still mixing things up in ways they never appeared in those original games, such as flipping gravity or wrapping the 2D scene around the corner of a 3D object. They bend the rules so far they go beyond even the most ambitious creations we saw in Super Mario Maker. It’s also super fun seeing Mario’s new costumes get translated into the old 8-bit art style. My favorites include the aviator suit and the retro-colored builder outfit, for no other reason than them being fun looks for the veteran plumber, but you can also mix and match hats and outfits to your heart’s content.

Of all the disparate lands Mario visits in his Odyssey, the urban-themed Metro Kingdom is my favorite. We’ve never seen anything like its semi-realistic look of New Donk City in a Mario game before. Not only do its urban obstacles allow for some kinetic platforming – bouncing off of the hoods of cars and flinging yourself off of city poles, for instance – but tucked-away minigames like an RC car race and a jump-rope challenge are great diversions. All the while, the sheer artistic contrast between the city and Mario’s consistently cartoony look and proportions have already generated interesting discussions about who – or more specifically what – Mario actually is. (Was “plumber” just a euphemism for some kind of goblin all along?) The end of the New Donk City portion might, in fact, be the very peak of the pleasure that Odyssey delivers on a consistent basis. Its conclusion is a literal celebration that doubles as a figurative one; Odyssey is pure joy that seems to understand and relish that about itself. On that note, I strongly recommend playing on a TV whenever possible. It’s not that it plays poorly in handheld mode – it runs perfectly smoothly at 60 frames per second in either mode, although there are no touchscreen controls even in minigames where they’d have made sense. The drawback to playing on the go is that the tiny screen doesn’t do nearly as good a job of showing off the scope and detail of the characters and worlds, such as the funny faces Mario makes when performing certain actions and the tiny 8-bit icons hidden on some walls. (Toss Cappy at them to get a quick gold-coin reward!). Of course, it’s every bit as good a game in handheld mode.
Overall Super Mario Odyssey is a brilliant adventure and love letter to the series that made Nintendo a household name.

The gameplay is astounding, the visuals are beautiful, the story is, well, it's a Mario game, so it doesn't matter, the music is incredibly catchy, Cappy serves as a great sidekick (who comes with a side bonus of cap-diving and breaking the game). I have got up to beating the Darker Side, and the best part is New Donk City. It is a huge, innovative, open-world map, but there is always something to do. Bowser's Kingdom isn't just a simple lava dungeon, but a Japanese-styled mansion world, with my favorite enemy, the Pokio. The Moon served as a great final level, with the Dark and Darker Sides being, well, hard. The callbacks to Super Mario 64, particularly in the Mushroom Kingdom, are great (I grew up with the DS version, so it is quite nostalgic to me) and when the update comes out, I'm grabbing the outfits, I'm using the filters, I'm playing Balloon World, and I consider this game the best Mario game of all time, and my personal favorite game of all time.
