Nintendo has really captivated that feel of what a true Mario game is all about with Super Mario Odyssey. You'll feel like you're playing Super Mario 64 at Christmas all over again on you N64. Though the story is short and can be beaten within a day, the game leaves you with tons of secrets and collectibles that will have you wanting to go at your wits end to get it. The surprises from this game keep making you want to come back and collect as many power moons as possible to get all endings and there is plenty of variety when it comes to clothing Mario with the various unlockable outfits. The difficulty of levels and puzzles stays at a steady pace throughout the majority of worlds and those dealing primarily with story content, however, when you start getting into the harder puzzles, it will definitely leave you wanting to throw your Joy Con at your tv. Nintendo has put a lot into Odyssey to challenge players. The boss fights seem to be lacking though when pertaining to the "Broodals". They are smart addition to the line up of enemies Mario has come up with over the years, but the fights are boring, predictable, and leave you with a feeling of "Oh no, THESE guys again? Give it a rest already!". I do hope there is DLC for Odyssey. Definitely a game worth being game of the year. I give it a perfect 10. Expand

I think this game is really fun, a bit on the easy side but after you beat it, there are challenges that will be sufficient for people who want them. If you have a switch, definitely get this, if you don't have one, this game makes a decent case as to why you might want to pick one up.

Say hello to another 10/10 collector because new SMO it's one of the best Mario I ever played (since 1995 When I first try SMB on C64) Absolutely briliant and ideal for Switch.

This game is another a big reason after Zelda to buy Switch!

I am not a "critic." I am a gamer. I have played every major Mario game since the original Mario Bros. 1983 arcade game (the NES version, anyway), and then from then on the Goomba squashing Mario we came to know and love as the first ever mascot of gaming (after Pac-Man, of course - though I wasn't around then).

After playing the Galaxies, I did not think Nintendo could ever make me love Mario again. Between Sunshine and Galaxy 1 and 2, the traditional Mario (Mario Bros. Wii) fell by the wayside for me... Sure, it was fun, but it just didn't have the creativity of the other three games. And then the Wii U happened... and everyone hoped for a Galaxy 3..... and we got a Mario Bros. Wii reiteration, and then a "3D" gimmick of that same formula. These were fun, sure, but they were a sort of mundane fun... something you did not really feel like playing again after winning.

(I personally think the Wii U was Nintendo's grace period to figure out what they needed to do, with EVERY franchise, including Mario, because they were screwing up. And boy am I glad they figured it out.)

Mario Odyssey is the game that could not be a Wii U game. This much is clear. The fluidity of animation without frame drops, the wonderful controls, the seamless flow of throwing Cappy and using him and jumping on him, the wonderful return to actually great music... Look, the truth is, as you play this game, you will find not just remnants of Mario in it, but also remnants of Banjo-Kazooie's little side quests.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will end on an honest note: if you hated the specificity of controls for that not-so-great Zelda game, Skyward Sword, you will not like the controls here. However, if you give them a chance, you will notice they are much more responsive (the Joy-Cons have much better technology in them than the MotionPlus Remote did).

If you loved Mario Sunshine, Mario 64, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Banjo-Kazooie, and even Mario 3D World, you will truly enjoy this game and rage a little here and there at some of the more difficult places. As for the difficulty of the game, it isn't difficult as a whole. A few people are upset that this game doesn't use a "Life" system; it uses coins. Many of them thought this stupid, but the truth is, you NEED those coins for some of the funner factors of the game (no spoilers), so it does not pay (ha! pun) to lose them by continuously dying - I have no idea why anyone who actually played the game and understood the coin system thought that it was stupid, but that's that.

All in all, I have to give this game a 10/10, because the only shortcoming is that it isn't longer - and yet, no game can last forever; not all games can be Breath of the Wild. For Mario, especially, this is a good thing. The pacing of the game is enough to keep you in wonder, and that's what all great Mario games have done since he landed in 3D space.

Super Mario Odyssey is likely meant to be Mario's version of Breath of the Wild, with it being a big game with lots to do. And I'm not going to beat around the bush; Super Mario Odyssey was amazing. But while the plot is shortSuper Mario Odyssey is likely meant to be Mario's version of Breath of the Wild, with it being a big game with lots to do. While I'm giving it a ten out of ten, I'm not going to say it's perfect; as my only gripe with the game is that the plot is way too short and kinda easy to tackle. But while the plot is short and simple, that is merely the door to the game itself, which is collecting a grand total of 600 Power Moons. I feel like the game's story was downplayed for a reason; to emphasis on the exploration aspect and Moon collecting. And while I still have many Power Moons to collect, I don't need to one hundred percent this game to say that it was fantastic all the way.

The capture mechanic the game takes on opens up a ton of new options for Mario to progress through worlds. From smashing blocks as a Hammer Bro to swimming through magma as a Lava Bubble to collecting a tower of Goombas to meet a female Goomba, Mario has more options than ever. It's a really cool feature, even if it does feel a bit overpowered at times.

The worlds are plentiful, rivaling that of Super Mario 64 and easily suppressing the game in terms of collectables for each world. While it feels like the game simply hands you Power Moons for the simplest of tasks, you have to get used to the patterns of where they appear. That means ground pounding almost everything, throwing you cap at anything and breaking anything. Moons can literally be anywhere and that's where the challenge aspect comes in; some Moons won't be easy to find. While it may just feel like an enormous version of Super Mario Galaxy 2's Green Star challenge, if you love exploring worlds and discovering these kinds of secrets, it'll keep you busy for a long time and if you enjoy it, there's no problems in it, is there?

Looking past the game's short story, Super Mario Odyssey really lives up to the hype it had. While it may not truly feel like the nostalgic Super Mario 64, it still does a good job at following in it's footsteps. The worlds are fun to explore, the capture mechanic makes it even more fun to explore and the amount of Power Moons means this isn't a game you'll one hundred percent in a day. But if you like a game that big, then this is definitely going to be a fun experience. Mario hit the Switch in a big way and this will likely go down as one of his best adventures yet.

The soundtrack is forgettable for the most part, but there are a few good tracks. Mulitplayer mode is disappointing. Playing as Cappy is boring for Player 2 and makes the game less intuitive for PLayer 1. In terms of difficulty, Odyssey isn't particularly difficult. There are no lives. This game is pure platforming fun. Each level requires you to go through the level and acquire moons to get to the level. Simple, but the level design is so good you’ll go moon hunting far beyond the required number. There are many costumes and collectibles to go after. Possibly the best Mario 3D game, loads of fun here.

While this game takes a sharp turn from what I used to think a Mario game was, the level of innovation and incorporation of amazing ideas lead me to see that this is one of the greatest of out generation.

Super Mario Odyssey has exceeded all of my expectations and kept me busy for a long time. Even after the story, there was still enough in the game to keep me playing for weeks. The game has the typical Mario story of Mario trying to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, but the fact that Bowser steals her to marry her is a nice twist and gives his actions throughout the game more purpose. In terms of gameplay, the game reminds me a lot of The Legend of Zelda: there are tons of puzzles and challenging fights that even experienced gamers may have trouble getting through. What makes Odyssey stand out from other Mario games is that it is completely open-world and you don't spend the entire game going level to level. You have to figure out where to go and how to get there, and it's not always obvious. The other main thing that separates Odyssey from previous titles is the map. There are so many different worlds, each with decently large maps. Also, each world has a store with exclusive souvenirs to decorate the Odyssey. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece and I would highly recommend it.

    Pros:
    - Huge open-world
    - Takes a long time to 100%
    - Challenging puzzles and boss battles
    Cons:
    - None

I got this game a couple of days ago, it's very fun and innovative. In my opinion, it's not as amazing as BOTW but still, the Switch had 2 of the best games of the year. I'd recommend this over BOTW, because it seems easier to get into.

Every "capture" mechanic is as creative and well-refined as the last, ensuring that what could have been a disjointed gimmick in a lesser game instead repeatedly offers unique and clever variations on platforming and puzzle solving.

Playing as Mario himself is as simultaneously tight and fluid as ever and the way some levels transition between 2D and 3D platforming really showcases the best the series has to offer in every dimension.

All of the different kingdoms are intriguing and beautiful with tons of secrets to find and space to explore. The different costumes you can collect inject a humorous customization aspect and provides plenty of extra incentive to keep playing and collecting long after the credits roll.

Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece and manages to stand out and leave a mark even in a franchise crowded with masterpieces.

I started out this Mario adventure skeptical. I felt like I'd seen enough "tablet" gaming that I felt this couldn't be a "REAL" Mario game. After having beaten the game, I can honestly said, I was proven completely wrong! This not only is a Real Mario adventure, this is one of the best Mario games I have played in years. I remember the novelty of Super Mario Galaxy's really cool planetsI started out this Mario adventure skeptical. I felt like I'd seen enough "tablet" gaming that I felt this couldn't be a "REAL" Mario game. After having beaten the game, I can honestly said, I was proven completely wrong! This not only is a Real Mario adventure, this is one of the best Mario games I have played in years. I remember the novelty of Super Mario Galaxy's really cool planets and thinking "Oh the next game has to be Mario Universe, right?". When it was announced that the next game would be an Odyssey on a single planet, I felt like "There's no way this could top Galaxy or Galaxy 2." but it certainly has.

When you first start out the game, Peach has yet again been kidnapped by the notorious Bowser. Of course, he plans to make her his bride, but in doing so, he's also kidnapped the princess of another land, the Ghost Hat people... ok... I know that sounds really weird, and it is, but it's still fantastic. In this game, Mario LITERALLY wears different hats. Sometimes these hats provide perks and there are many outfits that match each hat. Mario can use his hats to posses various creatures/enemies and become them. Yes, he very much takes over their possessed body and can use their powers. Often times these powers result in Mario locating his goals, in this game, that being Power Moons instead of stars. Which is different... somehow.

Moving on, Mario's controls have evolved over the years and all his staple moves have returned with a few more added to the fray. Mario can toss his hat and even spit and toss his hat so that it flies around him in a circular pattern, bopping every enemy around him. It's a really cool move that when done correctly, is very satisfying when you kill a big group of enemies with it. Furthermore, when you posses enemies, their controls work as you'd expect and they are very responsive. Possessing bad guys is so much fun, you'll want to try every creature you meet just to see what their powers are and what secret areas they can help you sniff out.

Speaking of which, the level design in this game is no different than past Mario adventures, in which I mean it's completely brilliant! The themes that are provided throughout the game have accompanying outfits/hats to go with them and each time you get to a new land you can get excited and say "I can't wait to see what cute little outfit Mario's going to buy in this land!" My favorites are Clown Mario and MexiMario. They are so adorable.

Ultimately, what's the bang for your buck? TREMENDOUS, if you dig in! There's a lot to see and do in this adventure if you give it time and seek out every nook and cranny. It's easy to get hooked on looking for all the power moons and since Mario is such a joy to control, the game is super addictive. Furthermore, you can purchase Amiibo characters from the store and provide Mario even MORE outfits! If you own a Nintendo Switch and have ever been a fan of Mario, GET THIS GAME! I have been with Mario since he began his adventures through the plumbing tubes and I'm so happy to see where he's at now. Mario is a great mascot and will continue to enchant people of all ages for years to come. You'd have to have a heart of stone to not look at Mario in his cute little outfits and gush like crazy. IF YOU PLAY THIS GAME, AND YOU HAVE A HEART, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do I even begin. After spending 3 days playing and paying my life into this game, and just starting my second playthrough, I am extremely pleased to say that Nintendo is on a roll this year with their newest podium console. Both this game, Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reinforce that fact and despite the Switch's multiple flaws and technical issues since its launch back in March, I truly believe this year is one of if not Nintendo's best years of gaming since the iconic year of 1985. Though onto the game. After my full playthrough and grinding in getting as much moon's as possible, I can definitely consider this game (along with Breath of the Wild) a masterpiece. From the start to finish, this game truly represents an exciting, creative and outstanding (as the title suggests) odyssey. Our Italian plumber friend does not stop with his adventures in defeating Bowser and saving Princess Peach ("WAIT, Why is that so familiar, OH YEAH!"), though this time Bowser seems more serious and intentional on marrying Princess Peach than I have seen him in almost every Mario game including Sunshine. Mario continues to impress me with his cunning and practical skills when it comes to completing these courses. Despite this being considered an open world Mario game, it would not be a 'Super Mario' game without those courses to further progress through the game. However the way that they have been implemented in this style is very very (about 10 more times) creative. Every single kingdom despite most being fairly small feature multiple courses, puzzels and secrets that you come upon when exploring whether it is on purpose of intentionally. And somehow, the game was even able to implement the classical 2D style courses that Mario enters via a pipe inside a wall, cliff, mountain etc. And even better, they didn't just put all of these mini-courses in for the sake of it, most of the time you will need to get through them if you really want to progress through the game and collect enough moons to power up the odyssey and travel to the next kingdom. On paper it may sound a little repetitive, but in reality it is not. Thats what I mean when I refer this game as creative. Every single kingdom is different and unique in its own way with multiple different courses and secrets scattered around the small kingdom where some can consist of up to 50 MOONS! Exploring further into the kingdom is up to the player however. Collect all the moons that you need from completing the main (3D) courses and defeat one of Bowsers mini bosses and move to the next kingdom, or keep exploring it like I did. When I did this I was and still am extremely ecstatic and intrigued of the amount of secrets and hidden courses to find all those moons. I haven't discovered this much secrets in a video game world since Assassin's Creed. Even Breath of the Wild wasn't this wild with its secrets. And Mario is not alone Oh No. He has a new companion! Not his brother Luigi, or Toad or anyone like that but a cap. Though not just any old or just an advanced version of Mario's own red cap (which is destroyed at the beginning) but it is an actual character. A ghost who has the physique of a hat who has many powers which include harming enemies when thrown, shapeshifting into a different type of cap and the ability that not only makes him stand out but make the entire game stand out over all the Super Mario games is being able to possess creatures such as goombas, frogs, wigglers and DINOSAURS, or enemy machines such as Bullet bills to literally transform Mario into a rocket or a tank to blow up everything (In some way). Without cappy, this Super Mario game would not be the Odyssey that it really is, even at one point in the game where cappy is abducted and you're forced to recue him without using any of his powers. Because of both the team and relationship Mario and Cappy develop throughout the game, this was not an easy thing to do as you're forced to get through obstacles using Mario's own (old school) abilities to rescue Cappy. It also proves that Cappy is not only a great companion but a necessity for Mario. Together the two of you are travelling through all the kingdoms, collecting all the moons, finding and discovering new things/secrets and defeating Bowser and saving Princess Peach (OBVIOUSLY) along with saving Cappy's little sister who is being used as Princess Peach's tiara and is most likely her companion. In conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey is yet another Mario game that does not disappoint in any way and another amazing Nintendo game to promote the Switch console and put Nintendo back on top after the failed launch of the Wii U. With this games surplus amount of secrets and hidden courses/puzzles, its content for the games main progression and all the versatility at your disposal with Mario and Cappy makes this game (along with Breath of the Wild) the best game for the Switch and the best Super Mario game since Galaxy released 10 years ago! This game is phenomenal. I love everything about it except these two complaints: 1, there is an unforgivable lack of checkpoints in some places, 2, the camera is broken and causes you about 40% of your deaths, and typically in an area without reasonable checkpoints. But it's such a great game otherwise.

The motions controls feel so intuitive and really enhance the gameplay. Cappy serves as a great sidekick, with his boomerang and capture abilities providing a refreshing take on the classic 3D Mario Mechanics. Visually, it is a gorgeous game. It maintains 60 fps consistently in both mobile and docked. There seems to be a variety of different environments in this game, unlike Super Mario Galaxy and Sunshine. While those games followed a common theme, Odyssey takes influence from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World in that there is a (Spoilers) desert world, ghost world. tropical world, metro world, etc. The music is phenomenal. I recommend that everyone use a headset to truly appreciate it. I had chills running down my spine once I heard the theme from the Switch Presentation Trailer for Odyssey. No other franchise has made as big of an impact on the gaming industry as Mario. He is the Micky Mouse of gaming. This game can be enjoyed by anyone. Enthusiast gamers. Father/Mother playing with his or her kids. Teenagers. Anyone. I had lost faith in Nintendo during the Wii U generation. They have absolutely blown me away with putting out masterpieces such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. These 2 games make the Switchh worth it. I must also add that this year has been incredible for gaming. Besides Mario and Zelda, we had Persona 5, Cuphead, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier, Nioh, Divinity. Instead of debating Game of the Years. The worlds ar vibrant and diverse, there's so many collectibles and the levels have so much variations. Bosses are cleverly made and all the quests will make this game playable for a long time. This is the best Mario game since 64. Just play it.

What a Masterpiece of a game. This game to me is the apex of everything Mario and then some.

For the longest time, I wanted a 3D sandbox-like Mario 64 sequel. Mario 64 was so good you couldn't just let it go and the potential was still there to expand the game. Nintendo took that potential and made a work of art in 2017. Mario Odyssey is simply the most game feeling game I've ever

Mario Odyssey is simply the most game feeling game I've ever really played. It's a feeling that not even a book or movie can replicate. It uses what makes video games unique and uses them so well.

This will be a legendary masterpiece that people will still talk about for years to come. Yet another timeless Mario game like Mario World and Galaxy.

Yes this game is as good as the hype. I played it three days straight now and have not been able to put it down. There are so many things to discover and collect. So many beautiful references to the older games.
The last boss fight is absolutely epic for a Mario game. I loved it.

Super Mario Odyssey is like a mash up of all of the previous games mashed together but with completely new mechanics and worlds. The game boasts beautiful scenery and colors in the levels, along with great music and innovative gameplay. Playing through the game doesn't feel repetitive unless you try to collect all 800+ moons with travelling through each kingdom and even though the game may remind you of previous games like Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy the addition of the Capture feature with your trusty sidekick Cappy adds a whole new dimension to the Mario franchise. So you will never not be surprised and you will find yourself returning to kingdoms to look for easter eggs and hidden secrets for you to discover.

I would definitely recommend anyone looking into buying a Switch to purchase one. Nintendo have had a great start to the year with BotW, Splatoon 2, ARMS and now Super Mario Odyssey and the future is bright for them.

Super Mario Odyssey is by far a contender to Breath of the Wild and those two games are my all time favorite games that I've played this year, All in all, it's fantastic.

Judging by how I played this game for over 10 hours straight with maybe one or two breaks in between, I would say this is a great game. Yes, the game isn't very long or difficult, even when I stopped to smell the flowers and collect extra moons, but it feels so great to control Mario and there are a million ways to do things and get to places. The game is so full of surprises, particularly a certain nostalgia-inducing post-game costume that you can unlock. The graphics are mostly fine even though it's in 900p and the city level can look pretty bad. When I finished the game, I just wanted more; there's some neat post-game content here, but it's nothing too crazy. Overall, just by the amount of joy this game has given me, I'd stay it's still a 10. it's the best exclusive title for the Switch. This year has been so packed of fun games that this would already be a good game to end it on, but there's still more coming. Here's hoping Xenoblade 2 lands that knockout blow in December. Expand

The best game of this year, easily! The story is the most unique and fun Mario story so far. The graphics were amazing, in both portable mode and on the TV. The gameplay is new and great. The use of Cappy is helpful and a big part of what makes this game Mario's most exciting game yet. It was easily worth buying.

Este juego es una oda a los diseñadores de videojuegos, al entretenimiento y a los jugadores. Nintendo da una lección de cómo ofrecer diversión a los jugadores, una vez más.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
