Best Mario game since Mario 64, maybe even better.
I've been sceptical about that game since the canticles in advance where that high, hyping the game. But now I know these were not just hype, but appropriate for that masterpiece in video gaming.
    Thank you Nintendo!

Super Mario Odyssey takes everything that made the 3D Mario genre great and blends it all together in one big grand adventure. The graphical art style is amazing, and while 900p may not sound great on paper, the fantastic colors, lighting, and the locked 60 frames per second will make you forget the Switch's hardware limitations. The soundtrack is phenomenal, possibly grammy-worthy. The sheer amount of collectibles found in the game will keep anyone coming back for more. Very few games have ever made me cry tears of joy at the ending; Odyssey is one of them. If I had any complaints about the game, it would be the story's length. But the good thing about that is that you can play it again and again. Super Mario Odyssey is the greatest video game of all time, and I can't give it a high enough score. If you own a Switch, you need to buy it. If you own an XB1 or PS4, you need to sell it and buy a Switch and this game. This game is not worth 60 dollars, it's priceless. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's face it. This game is really easy. I am not a particularly skilled player, and I got to the Bowser fight after a dayfull of playing the game. The Bowser fight wasn't that hard, but harder than everything else. I would recomend this to those who have never played video games before (it'll be a challenge at that level, but still fun) and for players who have played scince the NES. The game is shock full of a collectable called power moons, that you use to power your airship, the Odyssey. The game also has purple coins in each kingdom, ussually 100. Some are easy to find, some a little harder. 100% -ing this game will take a lot of time. This game earns 10/10 because:
    - Having Cappy as a companion is very usefull, and a fun twist on the traditional Mario vibe. Capturing enemies never felt "over powered," or game-ruining. But, rather, fun and a good mechanic.
    - The Moons are wonderful comparable with Stars in previous titles.
    - I personnaly like the way the Odyssey works. Some people seem dissapointed that it is not a hubworld, but I like it better than a hubworld.
    - The art style. Just wow. Mario never looked this good. And the addition of the new
    - snapshot mode is amazing. Very nice to be able to freeze and move the camera for that just-right capture. Similar to SSB for 3DS and Wii U. 's camera funtion.
    - Never a dull moment. I would say this is one of the best games I have ever played. No joke.
Mario Odyssey has gotten mostly good reviews, but some dislike specific aspects. I think that if you have a Switch and can find $60 you almost absolutly must buy this game.

Of course now it's even more pretty! the visuals are simply attractive and beautiful. For sure the best looking visual mario game you'll find on the market.

However the mario gameplay style in this game is quite unique and genius at the same time by using your cap you can use the action "capture" to for example be in control of a goomba or even a cheep cheep, I mean wow... I've always wanted to be one of those, also who would've imagined that you could even be in control of the humans it's very interesting and very exciting on what this capture action can do and gives us nintendo switch players a brand new way to play and explore new things.

Mario is trying to save Princess Peach from Bowser as Bowser is trying to marry her the plot is actually a little different although it's still the same "save peach scenario" which still works as you have to fight through multiple boss battles although I feel as if it's quite easy to beat them but overall I find the game so easy to just explore and have fun it's the most exciting game in years. This is a true 3D mario game that's for sure, I recommend picking it up as you'll have hours of fun with this and explore and find all those power moons, if you don't have a nintendo switch right now this is the perfect excuse to get one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Odyssey is an amazing game and the sequel to Super Mario 64 that has been 20 years in the making. It is astounding there are 17 unique kingdoms each fun to explore. This games story is short but has an amazing final Bowser boss . And don't forget the capture system it is one of the greatest aspects about the game and adds a lot of variety never before seen in a Mario game. The moons that you collect throughout the game are just a blast and that's good seeing as there are 836 unique objectives now i have about 469 of them and the have all been fun to collect. The game is pretty easy but some moons are challenging one of them in the later kingdoms took me like 30 minutes to complete. Finally the controls are the best in a Mario game giving the player ridiculous of control and the largest variety of moves in a Mario game. Over all Super Mario odyssey is a joy and a must have for switch owners. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just 100% completed Odyssey and I just wanted to write somewhere about how god damn impressed I was by it; I've not felt this refreshed by a 3D platformer since I were a young'n playing Banjo Tooie.
The game play was so enjoyable and fluid, keeping me interested at all times to go and explore every nook and cranny instead of just looking things up online as I do when I just can't be bothered to give other games the time of day.
I can't help but feel that if Yooka Laylee was even a fraction like this, it would have been much better received; MO just ticked all the boxes YL didn't in terms of mechanics, tone and content.
Odyssey was also one of those games that just kept giving, I was so shocked to see initially how many moons there are to get per level, but then you of course get given ample more via the moon blocks after beating Bowser's lizard ass within the main story. It was such a nice way to distribute more content as the game went on rather than fart-assing around with longed out mechanics or spending a fortune on 'the rest of the game' through DLC as so many do these days.
Don't get me wrong, there were a few infuriating parts (the skipping rope 100 moon, the final challenge), but these felt more like something I could get better at by trying rather than wanting to throw the joycons at my TV like ninja stars.
With this, Breath of the Wild and several other great titles, the switch is really shaping up to be a worthy contender late into the console cycle and I cannot wait to see what DLC they can crack out for this. Well done Nintendo for showing everyone else (cough, EA) how it's done.

Most kingdoms also have some very unique captures, which, unlike most games , are all fun( besides one of them which i'll not spoil). By the way, Mario's movement options are so fantastic (you can even beat the game without jumping!) and diverse that even in the late game when you're trying to collect the 800+ power moons it is still(mostly) fun. Also, 99% of this game's power moons are rewarding and feel really good to collect(besides 4 of them). This game ISN'T too easy: The main campaign won't be tough, I'll admit , but it's really fun, and go past that and you'll find some really tough-but-fair moments, which are equally as fun, and since the campaign isn't long, you won't have to wait much to get to the challenge( but if you try to complete

Super Mario Odyssey™ pleases every Super Mario™ fan( besides the Mario maker™ ones ):Galaxy, 3d World , 3d Land, 2d fans will have great pure-platforming sections and clear goals, 64 and Sunshine fans will have exploration and collect-a-thon gameplay( you can just skip the goals and have just as much fun), Mario Sports/Party Fans will have tons of (mostly) fun minigames. This game is just suited for any playstyle, and you'll have fun in any way you want to play, and anywhere, since this game is well-suited for short gameplay, due to the power moons , and for long sections, due to the huge kingdoms that don't make you quit them when you collect a mission, making it kinda of addicting, since you will originaly be looking for one goal and suddenly you'll find another moon, then another, then another...
However, the game isn't flawless. The nowhere platforming gauntlets are really great in level design, but the least creative in the game, even compared to 3d Land or the New Super Mario Bros. series, but they are still fun.The parts where you don't have cappy are really annoying, and forced and unresponsive motion controls( which would have been OK in the days of the Wii ,but this is the Switch, and even when you're are clearly playing it in handheld mode or with the Pro Controller the game still shows tutorials( which is another problem, the game shows tutorials even when you are in the final kingdom, but not as frequent as something like Skyward Sword)of actions you can only do with the split joycon ,which turns it somewhat frustrating),and the Co-op mode feels really rushed and unpolished,so if you want to play with your friend, you should look elsewhere (even Mario Galaxy's is better). With that said, this game is really worth-buying,despite these negatives, and the campaign is aproximately the same length as this review.

The bosses were pretty easy in general, but I like the fact that you need to be smart to hit them a few times instead of easily hitting them 20 times. I completed the main story in about 8 hours (about 80% of purple coins and 261 moons). I was not looking everywhere, but I was looking. There is a power moon and/or a mini-game every 2-3 minutes if you look properly. I really like collectibles, but 999 power moons is just too much lol 250 would have been more than enough. I think I will replay it to try to gather 500 moons, but I am not sure yet. The music is good as usual, but nothing incredible. I personally played with the detached joy-con and I really enjoyed the experience!

I still remember how in awe I was when i played Mario 64 on the N64 as a teenager, Mario Odyssey really reminds me of that game, it really is a true follow up to Mario 64 and while due to the times that initial awe is a little harder to achieve over my playthrough a similar awe developed for Mario Odyssey, with the 2d sections the HD rumble and motion controls and the fluid and creative movement of Mario and the possibilities each world holds. This game is amazing.

Super Mario Odyssey is as close to perfect as any game can be. After hitting 100% completion, I have to say it's one of the best games I've ever played, and would have been my game of the year for 2017 if not for Breath of the Wild.

What makes it so good? To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games.

    What makes it so good?

To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games. There's something magic about being able to become practically every enemy you encounter and learning how to use their unique characteristics to your advantage. However, even without that fantastic new addition, the basics are all incredible. Movement is fluent, and the quest to find all 880 moons, and the many regional coins hidden in each kingdom, is fun - they make the game a lot bigger than I expected and the challenge presented by the sheer volume and creativity of the moons (which will surely be appreciated by completionists) kept me playing for more than 55 hours (the addictive minigames and leaderboards helped to bolster that playtime). After seeing everything the game has to offer, I was happy with the varying difficulty. Furthermore, Odyssey has an excellent tone, never taking itself too seriously, whilst being incredibly charming. There's a certain polish applied to everything in the game that keeps it consistent and keeps it feeling alive. Every single kingdom is impeccably well designed, from the soundtrack to the characters and creatures that live there. There isn't a single forgettable location, with it even making something memorable and interesting out of snow and water levels. I don't think I could pick a favourite nor the worst - every kingdom is truly special (however, I think it's only fair to give the stellar Metro Kingdom a mention). One of my favourite things was to discover what each kingdom had to offer, because of how distinct each is from the last. There's so much to see, and its a pleasure to be able to get absorbed in the excellent soundtrack and interact with the brilliant environments.

It's fun. I don't see how anyone could dislike it - the variety is so intense that it's hard to imagine that there isn't something here for everyone. It's far better than any other Mario game I've ever played, and far surpasses the likes of Super Mario 64. This is one of those games that is so good that people will be using it as a benchmark for years; it's raised the standards for modern platformers and collectathons.

Every single moment spent playing Odyssey is a moment well spent - this is an objectively perfect game that is deserving of it's universal praise, and of it's name. Odyssey, meaning epic journey, couldn't be a better fit.

I am a loss for words! This game is incredibly addicting.

    Positives:

-The 2D sections are incredibly innovative. I love how they even created a separate 8-bit theme of each course to fit them, along with even including the 30+ outfits being visible on Mario in those sections too. Nintendo has definitely opted for quality over quantity this time round.

-The new inclusion of outfits. It's like I'm in mod heaven. Some of the outfits in the game will give you goosebumps if you've played any other Mario titles before this

-The capture abilities. There are over 50+ captures, and man, do they provide gameplay variation. I'd had expected to avoid them due to having a limited moveset compared to Mario's renown ability of parkour, but that never seemed to cross my mind. It isn't a gimmick, it definitely improved my enjoyment of the game.

-Mario's moveset. It harkens back to the ol'64 days, and I love it. As you can probably already observe, people have broken the boundaries of this game with Cappy and still are rewarded for unorthodox gameplay. Nintendo truly tries to appeal to both a casual and hardcore audience, and it pays off beautifully.

-I have to admit, the best kingdoms are definitely the ones Nintendo did not show off.

    Negatives:

-In some ways, I feel like the *actual* platforming in Odyssey in the main kingdoms is slightly lacking. I know it's meant to be similar to 64 with that adventurous feel instead, but the Sand Kingdom, dear god, is far too vacant. I would prefer if Nintendo at least included more lumps of sand or at least some hurdles to force me to take advantage of Mario's moveset more, rather than rolling around everywhere.

-The background aesthetic is incredibly mundane in most of the secret-esque levels, akin to Sunshine. It's rather off-putting and makes me less inclined to want to play them.

-The broodal boss fights are just plain boring. The rest however, (like local bosses) are **** amazing. But that's mostly because they are unique (using captures exclusively) rather than just jumping on heads.

In other words, I'd say personal improvements for me would be that I think the kingdoms could be designed a bit better, otherwise I believe there should be more. Nintendo could definitely force you to be more creative with the capture abilities as well. They have untapped potential.

Again, this game took quite a few risks that are in their infancy for the Mario franchise, similar to BOTW for Zelda (where it nailed combat, over-world, health, scavenging and accessibility in roaming, but failed in puzzling variety and dungeons). So I don't expect perfection off the bat when it comes to innovation. I can definitely see any direct sequels to these titles easily improving on their respective formulae. Which is insane to perceive when these games are already almost rated 100 on Metacritic, implying they are already perfect.

Peach is kidnapped and Mario needs to save her, same old thing, but like almost every Mario game ever made, the game isn't about the story. However, I will say that this game holds the most cutest ending that I have ever seen in any video game.
Once the story has been finished, the content increases by huge margin. The amount of Moons you can collect is numerous, and there are so many different outfits for you to try out, the fun just keep going. The content is so great, the game stays fresh from beginning to end.

    Controls:
The gameplay is fun and intuitive... that said there are like 3 moves that you cannot use on the unless you use motion controls; cap throw down, cap throw up, and homing cap... yes you can use it with your controllers attached to the grips but it would've been nice to have every move mapped onto the controller. there is also the way Mario does a spin cap attack... you can do it without motion controls but it is not as instant.

Now the positive, as I said above, the controls very intuitive and fun. once you get used to the main controls (which won't take long) your up and running and playing the game. like most, all Mario games the controls are super tight and fun... it will make you fall in love with Mario and Nintendo again.

    Graphics:
The game runs at a fluid 60fps throughout the whole game as far as I know... there might have been frame dips but they were so negligible I didn't notice them. I did, however, notice the antialiasing but to run this game at 60fps and smoothly I think it is forgivable.

    FunFactor:
The fun factor of the game is out of this world... the main game itself is super easy... but that is not where this game shines... the game shines in its exploration, Nintendo gives you massive worlds to play in... I mean huge worlds (except for the few little ones scattered in the game for story or tutorial reasons). it is like Nintendo built each person a bunch of playgrounds to just explore and have fun in... of for that I say thank you Nintendo.

Yes, you can breeze through the game in a few hours and be done with it... but if you want more out of the game you need to delve deeper (use tricks and advanced moves)... you will need to work for some of these moons. but if you are inexperienced or a casual gamer, there are plenty of moons to find randomly in the world.

so to end my review, if you have a switch, pick up the game, if you don't buy a switch and get the game... if you can't try to get someone to buy you a switch and this game lol it will be well worth it.

Just spectacular. This game is a love letter to my childhood. It's the Mario 64 sequel that we never got. I liked it more than Zelda. It's amazing what Nintendo does. Mario is back, Nintendo is Back

The game is incredible. The scenarios are beautiful, the phenomenal songs and the controls are very easy and intuitive. It reminded me so much of the late Mario 64.

Probably the Best 3D Mario Game since 3D World/Galaxy/64. The Game is a Major Breathtaking by any means.
It's like you're playing Super Mario 64 again. Cappy is Awesome, The Gameplay is Amazing, and you can walk anywhere you want as it's open-world.
    Nintendo killed it this Year.

The game that brings a big smile to everyone on planet Earth.
I always thought the return of a Mario game like Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy level was impossible before I played Odyssey. As a guy that started playing when I was 4 years old with the N64 I'm in love with Nintendo and Mario 64 has always been one of my top5 and my favourite Mario. I can't explain how fun and how happy I feel when I play this game. No boring worlds, no boring story scenes, ALL FUN.
To me this is the successor to Galaxy, Sunshine and 64 combined with a 3DWorld feeling and I absolutely love it. It is insane how Nintendo has put Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey the same year, it just amazes me.
I rate this game a solid 10 and of course if you have a Nintendo Switch, buy the game if you have the money, just buy it, it's worth every euro/dollar/etc of it.
    Have fun!!

Super Mario Odyssey is a 10 out of 10, as you know, Mario is back! And btw his hat gets stomped on by Bowser who will have a wedding with Peach even if he kidnapped her a lot of times in other games? Anyways the point is the city is one of the best maps in Odyssey, I don't have the game yet but can't wait to play it!

Halfway through the game, though far from halfway through the content, this game is simply a pleasure. Mario controls better than ever, and has more moves and transformations than ever before. The worlds are varied, and very creative. The environments are not simply themes, as they often have been in the 2D Mario games of late, but full fledged worlds with dozens of hidden secrets across their many nooks and crannies. Power moons and purple currency reward exploration with fuel for your ship to reach new worlds, and customization of both Mario and his ship.

This game feels very much like what it is, the culmination of decades of design experience refined to be as fun and fresh as possible. Play this game, seriously, play this game!

Just getting it yesterday (on release date), I believe this game is amazing to its core and everything around it. the controls are sound, music refined, but most importantly, the gameplay shines like a burning star. It retains elements of the classic 3d mario titles yet has its own style and structuring. Without a doubt my game of the year, even surpassing breath of the wild.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
