Personally, I enjoyed the puzzle-solving battle system, but I can understand how it can be frustrating to others. Fortunately, coins are abundant in The Origami King, and they can always be used to help solve the puzzles for players who are stumped. Visually, the game is beautiful, and the music is among the best in the series!

I believe that Paper Mario fans, while perhaps disappointed by some missing aspects from games prior, will still find plenty to enjoy here. It's not the zenith among the series' entries, but The Origami King is still solid!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics: 2/2 The Origami King looks and runs beautifully on the Switch. It is one of the best looking games that Nintendo has put out in 2020.
Gameplay: 2/2 I found the combat in the Origami King to be very fun. However, during the Purple/Green Streamers, I felt less compelled to engage in combat. Nevertheless, the ring based combat in Origami King was a delightful experience.
    Sound/Music 2/2
The Origami King’s soundtrack is magnificent. Some highlights are the Streamer Battles, Event Battle, Boss Battles (Vellumentals/Legion of Stationary, Toad Town, Picnic Road, Autumn Mountain, Shogun Studios, etc.
    Story: 1/2
I felt that The Origami King’s story felt a bit short and lackluster. It definitely has some highlights though (eg. Bobby’s death). However, the rest feels like filler to extend the content of Origami King.
Characters: 1/2 The characters are just generic Mario enemies. The party members are kidda interesting. Bobby is my favorite character in the entire game. However, Professor Toad, Kamek, and Bowser Jr. are mediocre at best. Oliva is just annoying. King Olly is a “unique character”, however his intentions for folding everything into origami are childish and racist. Overall, The Origami King is a very good game. The gameplay, graphics, and music are beautiful. However, I felt that the story was too short and the characters were too generic. 8/10

Although this game continues to ignore fan’s requests, it isn’t necessarily for the worst. It falls short as a RPG, but excels in every other aspect. Puzzle solving, exploration, art style, story, and even the combat, make this game what it is. There is no experience system, however, you can collect coins from combat, and from finding nook's and cranny s throughout the world to buy weapons and items. Unfortunately, fighting random enemies in the over-world is the most inefficient way to collect coins. Speaking of fighting, the combat can be a mixed bag. On the one hand, random enemy encounters can be frustrating. However, boss fights are exciting and diverse in game-play. The aspect that really sells this game is the story, and the charm in general. You will find yourself falling in love with the characters of this game, such as Olivia and Bob-omb. Puzzle solving, while annoying at times, is usually pretty fantastically integrated in an appropriate context that doesn’t halt the pacing. The world design, for the most part, is diverse. The music is exciting. The art style is gorgeous. Although this formula for a more unconventional RPG will probably return to mediocrity with the next Paper Mario, this entry’s risk-taking certainly paid off. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario the Origami King is a solid adventure game. The world that is created here is incredibly unique and visually stunning, even if certain parts of it are comprised of the standard Mario fair. The Vellumentals and their temples give a sense of mystique and allure to the world that few Mario games can manage. The best part of this game without a doubt is the writing and characters. Olivia is one of the best partner characters Nintendo has ever made. She is cheerful, bubbly, easily frightened, and extremely enthusiastic about seeing new things and going to new places. She contrasts perfectly with her brother, King Olly, who feels nothing but contempt for the world and his creators. It creates a very strong emotional throughline for the main journey. And beyond that, the game is really funny. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times throughout the adventure. Just about every NPC says something witty regarding their circumstances, one of them even parodying the Eric Andre show, which nobody under the age of 15 will probably get.

The battle system is sort of give and take. Conceptually, it allows for satisfying puzzle solving that can make you feel like you're legitimately smart and can think outside the box. And many times, it does just that. Quite a few battles in the late game can be head scratchers, and took me a long time to figure out. However, just as many puzzles are pretty mindless and can be solved rather easily. And if you really feel like making the entire game this easy, the game gives you options to solve part of the puzzle for you. This is where coins come in. Unlike other Paper Mario games, battles don't give experience. Instead, you earn coins which can be used for buying time to solve puzzles, which is what I used them for most frequently, or you can use them to buy stronger items from shops. This makes the lack of experience pretty negligible, since you also don't earn more HP in the traditional sense. You earn more HP by exploring the world and finding Max increases at certain locations, and this also improves your other stats. The rest of the game is built around coins. But the downside to this, or possibly an upside depending on your perspective, is you can use coins to partially solve every battle puzzle automatically. On the one hand, it's nice to give people a little help when they can't figure it out themselves. On the other, solving the puzzles is never required just to finish the battles, it just gives you an attack multiplier to beat them faster. While I can see them attempting to appeal to that old-school arcade game mindset of "the better you are, the faster you can beat the game," it falls short here because the coins are so numerous that there's basically no punishment for letting the game solve the puzzle for you, so you can easily fall into a pattern of doing that for every fight and eliminating pretty much all of the game's challenge. I actively tried to avoid doing this, and I think it improved the experience for me. But I can fully understand why it would be a turn off for others.

This is why I started by saying this is a good adventure game, because the best parts of the game revolve around the beautiful vistas, the fascinating locations, the sense of discovery and world-building. All of that is stellar. If you're looking for a solid adventure with funny dialogue, charming characters, and gorgeous scenery, you need to get this game. If you're looking for a challenging or otherwise thoughtful RPG, you're better off with the older Paper Mario games, but I still recommend this as long as you leep expectations in check.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was initially hesitant upon getting this game due to the reception of the last 2 Paper Mario games, but I’m glad I did. In my opinion, this is the best Nintendo-published Switch game of 2020. The visuals are gorgeous; the slightly tweaked art style created to fit the origami nature really pops and makes the world seem much more alive. The soundtrack is great (I especially love Autumn Mountain’s music), and the writing is simultaneously quite funny, serious and heartwarming all at once. There were many moments in the game that left an impression on me in a very good way, like the lead-up to the boss battle in Shogun Studios where Mario was acting out scenes of a play in real time and the calming ride down the river in Autumn Mountain. Additionally, the areas of the game are so much more fun to explore and get lost in than Sticker Star or Color Splash. The world is interconnected in TOK and that is much better suited to this kind of game than separate stages. Plus, the locations aren’t quite as basic or rudimentary as they were in Sticker Star or the NSMB games. However, the game certainly isn’t without its problems.

I complimented the writing and some parts of the story, but others were quite uninteresting. Olly is uninteresting as a villain and so are his motives; he only wants to create an origami realm because he hates the toads. That’s it. And on the subject of characters, there aren’t many that left an impression on me besides Bobby the Bob-omb (who ends up dying later on). Olivia, the companion character, can be frequently cute and wholesome, but not enough for me to have that much of an attachment to her. In terms of Mario himself, he has a few new abilities in this game, but they’re somewhat limiting. The 1000-Fold Arms technique allows for Mario’s arms to stretch out and grab certain creases on the wall to progress, but it’s context-sensitive and can only be used with a corresponding Magic Circle on the floor. It’s not used in battles or with solving puzzles or anything. Mario can also throw confetti to patch up holes in the ground, but that’s literally the only use it has. It doesn’t play into the battles in any way like the stickers or paint did in the last 2 games. And in terms of the battles themselves... Oh boy. If anything, I can commend Intelligent Systems for trying something unique and new, but the battles in TOK are cumbersome, frustrating, and worst of all, meaningless. It’s set in a ring where you have to line up the enemies in certain patterns that enable you to kill all of them at once, so it’s essentially a puzzle you have to solve before actually being able to attack. To me, it just takes a longer time than necessary to get going, especially if there are multiple rounds to the same battle, and it only lasts longer if you don’t line the enemies up perfectly. Yet if the battles get anything right, it’s the fact that they don’t use stickers or cards, meaning you will absolutely always have a means of attacking the enemy, which is wonderful. But in the end, none of that matters because you get no EXP from battles. All you get is coins, which are everywhere in the game and SO numerous. At least in Color Splash you were able to upgrade your paint capacity via battles, but in TOK they’re absolutely worthless. And the boss battles? I absolutely hate them (but I also kind of love them). There are a lot of boss battles in TOK, from the Vellumentals you have to defeat to utilize their powers later on, to real-life objects like a bin of colored pencils that make no thematic sense in this game. In the boss battles you have to clear out a path to reach them and beat some sense into them, but there are a lot of tricks they pull to make it harder. More often than not, it’ll be reaching the bosses that provides the challenge more than the actual attacks the bosses have, and it’s infuriating most of the time. To me, the boss fights are the worst parts of the game by a mile. However, the 1000-Fold Arms technique is actually utilized in the boss fights, and if you have motion controls turned on (yes, motion controls are something you can optionally use for things like 1000-Fold Arms and some other areas) you can shake the controller to beat the bosses senseless, and I am not exaggerating when I say that it’s one of the most therapeutic experiences I have ever had in a video game. It is SO gratifying that it almost makes up for how frustrating the journey was getting there.

I know I spent much more time talking about my critiques with this game than the parts I enjoyed, but I really did have a great time with it. I would absolutely recommend this game, but I recommend playing it as an adventure game instead of an RPG. Skip the battles and you’ll still have a really fulfilling experience. I clocked in around 30 hours when I was done with the game so there’s still quite a bit of substance without the battles. Overall, this is a great game.

Paper Mario is fun, because unlike Mario Odyssey, the story is humorously designed with allusions. There are a few mini-games that are entertaining, but not a must. The game can be played through 100% with skill without having to grind. The battle system takes some getting used to, (I haven't mastered it yet), but the attempt to create something new. I honestly didn't know what to expect from this game, I wasn't expecting much, but I was shocked to see how the game managed to do just about everything right. Granted I will still never be able to hold this game to the same praise that everyone does with the first two Paper Mario games, but this game did some things that make me believe that a game like those two is certainly not unreasonable to expect from Intelligent.

There is so much good in this game that I'm honestly not sure what I should praise in this review, the visuals in this game are absolutely stunning, quite possibly the best in the series, and all the areas are very appealing, and the gimmick of almost everything being origami really makes this game stand out from the two games it descended from.

On top of that they fixed the biggest sticking point in the game, battles are now no longer a net loss, since stickers and cards are no longer a thing, you now have weapons you can equip, and these weapons are not gone immediately when you use them, instead breaking after repeated use, which may be a turn off for some people but for me that definitely is a good idea, one which I'd prefer as opposed to losing it immediately. Plus you can get accessories which basically act like badges from the first Paper Mario games, which definitely helps.

But if you thought that was good, wait until you hear this: they added back partners! Ok well not like in the first two games but still in certain areas characters will follow you around, now in battle they aren't as useful as the first two games cuz they will just choose whether they want to actually be useful or not, but it's nice that they're not forgetting the original games.

And for the first time in 2 Paper Mario games, the story isn't just a boring Bowser captures Peach narrative. Instead it's a story about an evil Origami King Olly wanting to fold everyone into origami so they will be loyal to him. And unlike a crown from the sticker star or a paint can from a fountain, your main assistant in this game is Olly's sister! That's incredibly awesome especially since we haven't had a story that isn't Peach kidnapped by Bowser in a long time.

Now I will say I do not have any big issues with this game, instead only a few small issues, issues that don't really affect the game that much.

Now the biggest issue I have with this game is with the tutorial, you cannot skip it and it explains the entire system in excruciating detail for just about the entire first area. This is okay for first time players but for those replaying the game it is torture, this could've easily been fixed by just adding a skip tutorial option.

But surprisingly for the first time, I actually don't like the bosses that much. Well specifically the ones guarding the ribbons, the Vellumentals are sick, I don't wanna bash on them. But the Legion of Stationery I have a big dislike for, especially since they're all things from the previous two games, you got Colored Pencils, Rubber Bands (I actually kinda like this one but only a little), a Hole Punch, a Tape Dispenser, Scissors, and (although not guarding a streamer) a Stapler. These bosses feel really uninspired and I feel like they could've tried to get them to work in other ways than this.

Even with those few negatives, I feel this game is very well-made, and I would even recommend it to people who consider Sticker Star and Color Splash to be absolutely awful.

I give this game a high rating because I simply like paper Mario games. Not everyone does, but I have always enjoyed them. I still hope that one day the series returns to the creativity from the Thousand Year Door.

Basic Review: This game is really enjoyable, the world is not connected instead of being levels on its own; which was a problem people had with the previous two games. But the game is only enjoyable when you look at the whole thing. The battle system is badly made when fighting bosses.

Sometimes you may do a certain move too early & then have to do it later, but the game may not tell

Sometimes you may do a certain move too early & then have to do it later, but the game may not tell you that or give a hint. It can be confusing.

This game also has partners, but they aren't helpful in battle. The best they can do is leave a basic attack & you can't even control them, you also lose your partners after a section of the game is completed.

Also, this game is kinda short for the story mode, the game takes around 25 hours to beat without going for %100. These games take 4 years to come out in between titles so a longer experience for the next game would be nice.

Overall this game is a step in the right direction for returning to the Paper Mario classic formula. But it has design flaws outside of it not being like the other games.

After that I got hooked on Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which repeated the fate of The Origami King - I abandoned it at the point where you have to defeat the enemy only with perfect kicks. In a month I'll come back to it and I want to believe I'll drool over it again.

Paper Mario: The Origami King was a turning point for me, after which I started to trust Nintendo more. And if a game seems uninteresting at first glance, it's better to try it anyway and form your own opinion. In my case, it worked with Fire Emblem, and a month ago I would have laughed in the face at someone who said I would play turn-based tactics and drink tea with anime girls.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is better then Color Splash. That is no achievement, or a standard. Compared to the rest of the series, it’s fine. As a stand-alone game, it is superb. Let’s go further in.

The story is very good. Mario and Luigi go to a festival, which would be a recipe for disaster if it were sticker themed. Toad town is deserted, so the bros venture inside the castle.

The story is very good. Mario and Luigi go to a festival, which would be a recipe for disaster if it were sticker themed. Toad town is deserted, so the bros venture inside the castle. Mario and Luigi find an oddly angular Peach, who drops them into her dungeon. Mario, now alone, finds Olivia, the sister of King Olly who has turned many of the inhabitants into Origami. He wraps the castle up in some streamers and Mario and Olivia get away. This is the most emotionally compelling Mario game. Play it yourself to see what I mean.

The gameplay is more action and puzzle based. When you do find an enemy, you battle it in a ring-like style. You’ll like the overworld more then the battles. The gameplay is good.

They go all out with the paper theme. It’s no Luigi’s Mansion 3, but it looks very good. The locations look nice and are interesting, like Shogun Studios, which is a Japan-Styled theme park. The music is insanely good, a standout being the Shogun Studios theme.

There is about 15 hours of story. I wouldn’t 100% it, as that may take very long.

A criticism I have is that the characters don’t look interesting. A lot of people say they don’t like it, and I kind of know what they mean. If you’re interested, I’d recommend it. You’ll like it, trust me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

+ uniek battle system. wapens kopen is optioneel

Played it after 3ds and it improved a lot of things from that one, but still some things just dont make sense for an RPG turn based game, like not leveling up, so usually you dont want to enter any fight.
I actually like the new art style with everything papery so I think its a very beautiful game also with great graphics. It is very comic and engaging, did almost 100% and had a great time.

Paper Mario: The Origami King was a fantastic gaming experience. I milked this game for as long as I could because I didn't want it to end. I milked this game for as long as I could because I didn't want it to end. The plot is truly one of the best I have experienced in all my time gaming. To be honest, it did not hook me right from the start. This is not because it was not compelling enough, but as a traditional Mario gamer it took me a while to resonate with the new characters that played a massive role in the story. It did not take long for the plot to hook me though, and once it did I couldn't put the game down.

I do not understand complaints about any game being too long. If you're bored of a game, just... stop playing? People who enjoy games want them to continue. It's not like this game was overly repetitive - in fact, I'd argue the opposite. The ability to explore new settings, meet new characters, and the variety of objectives kept Origame King fresh throughout the entire story. The toad collection was repetitive but it was not much of a requirement to advance through the story so it could be ignored. Paper Mario games have always included humor and charm (shoutout to Gourmet Guy), and Origami King is no exception to this. The humor is very clever - got a few good laughts out of me. Of course, as an E-rated game it is a bit cheesy, but not in a cringeworthy way. I personally do not take much pride in beating a game as quickly as possible, I prefer to take my time and enjoy the experience. For those considering Origami King, I'd suggest taking such an approach if you do decide to give it a shot.

Like others, I did not love the puzzle solving battle system. Unlike most others, it was not nearly egregious enough to ever make me consider putting the game down. It added another complicated element to the heat of these RPG battles, and while I see the vision, the execution was lacking. These battles are of course a huge part of this game, so this was the only reason I did not give Origami King a perfect score. That being said, the music for these battles was an absolute masterpiece. Truly one of the best pieces of VGM to ever enter my ears. Contrary to everything I said to criticize the battle system, I would find myself seeking out enemies just to bop to that banger. That music absolutely slaps. Great OST throughout the game but the battle music takes the cake. Also, the boss battles were not affected by the flaws of the battle system in my opinion. I thought the boss battles were fantastic.

Overall, Origami King was a great time and I would suggest it to anybody who enjoys RPGs, adventure, Mario games, etc. I'd put this on par with the original Paper Mario for N64. Both games shine in different ways, but the bridge between them is a fantastic story that makes you never want to end.

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Among countless places to visit, bosses to win, and puzzles to solve, the game can be considered one of the best in the franchise.

Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
