    Paper Mario: The Origami King is a solid offering from Nintendo who have clearly tried to bring the series back to its RPG roots. The RPG elements are not as old school as some of the haters would want which is why I believe some people are unhappy. If you judge this game by its own merits, Origami King is a winner. This is the best looking game on switch.     The writing is some of Nintendo's best, both story-wise and characters. The humor had me laughing and engaged every step of the way. There are some extremely memorable characters here (looking at you Bobby and Olivia). The puzzles are engaging and you feel a strong sense of progression as you make your way through the adventure.

    The amount of content you get in the game is huge. So many areas to explore, so many different collectables.

    Now for the bad: The combat. The combat itself is not bad, but it is for sure the weakest part of the game. If they allowed you to control your alley and pick your ally's action I think it would have really beefed it up.

    I very much liked the boss battles. Especially the bosses which did not require the ring style combat.

    I have never been so engaged in a Mario adventure. True score is a 9/10 but i will give a 10 to rebuff the haters.    … Expand

    This is a cute, charming, and very funny game. The writing is full of nonstop wacky humor. I was trying to screenshot every joke and couldn't keep up. Also, your companion Olivia, establishes herself as a memorable character.

They are usually littered with obstacles, you have limited turns, are on a timer, and often have to pick up items along the way. There is a specific way to beat them and you have to figure it out on the fly. It is needlessly complicated and vague.

    This game has faults, but they are outweighed by a good soundtrack, a heartfelt ending, and many unforgettable moments and characters this game has to offer.    … Expand

    Having played this as my first paper mario game I really have no point of comparison as to how the series has been going I've heard lots of different reviews about how it is far from the original series, I'd say if this game was not good enough for those people I don't know what is.     Gameplay - Great. I had fun with the battle system. In the end, depending on my mood, I would battle the enemies or I would kill them with a jump or hammer without entering into battle mode. 90% of the time I would battle them because I would receive a lot of coins like that. If I just jump or hammer them, I would only get one coins. I did enjoy the puzzle element of each battle. No two battles were ever alike because of the freshness of this system.

    What I am surprised to read in most reviews, is that you end up running from the fights. I do not know if what they meant when they say “run” is that you actually can one hit kill the enemies because you are powerful enough AFTER leveling up with hearts. During my 32 hour play through I never run from anything. Also, apart from coins and confetti, the incentive for battle is the puzzle solving and kickass music.

    Also the other problem of to much coin of confetti. Me, personally, my main source of coins and confetti for the entire game were battles. First, lets talk about coins. I needed coins to buy items or trophies, They were EXPENSIVE. I even run out of money once. AFTER 25 hours, when you reach a special island (which is optional), you get overloaded with coins AFTER completing a trial. That was near the final part of the game though. Second, lets talk about confetti, I know you can get it on trees or flowers. That is an emergency source of confetti. When you are exploring, fighting, covering holes and discovering secrets, your main source of confetti are the fights. Of course if during that whole action process, no enemies are left and you run out of confetti to cover that last portion of a hole, THEN you get it from a tree or a flower.Trees and flowers are not your main source of confetti.

    A lot reviewers out there sound like they wanted to rush through the game. In that case, it is obvious their main source of confetti was going to be nature and their main source of coins was just going to be the environment. Then, because they were rushing an avoiding battles, the few battles they would get into, they would just pay the toads 100-200 coins to solve the puzzle an automatically win. If I played like this, I would also detest the game.

    Another thing I see that a lof of reviewers fail to mention, is that this game give you OPTIONS on how difficult you want it to be. For example, there are charms that give you more health or more defense. There is a way to have toads solve the puzzles in each battle if you pay them. If you do not want to pay them, than some puzzles in battles you will not solve and then you will rely on buying more powerful items to fight a longer fight. All of these things are OPTIONAL. Personally, I always solved the puzzles. I only used the toads help when my energy was low an I could not risk getting killed.

    The game is just a breath of fresh air! It is so beautiful, funny and creative. I needed a game as original as this for a long time. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Also, do not read other reviews, because there are idiots that spoil some parts.    … Expand

    Even with all the medium and bad criticism. My personal review is excellent. The story is very fun, the game is very well made with the scenario a details, Mario faces. And the fighting dynamic is quite different and make you think. Again even without the experience points the game is world class.

    Reading other reviews. People say you get too many coins. That's true at the start of the game. Until you start hitting item after item that costs a fortune. Though mushrooms and so on stay cheap.

    A few fun moments throughout in the story I'd say too, daftness, sillyness. It's nice.

    Though.... There are too many toads at times, haha.

Now the combat system is pretty unique, it’s laid out like a puzzle and when you do it right you get your attacks powered up, the bosses in the other hand are completely different and unique they always add something new to the bosses each one feels unique in they’re own way which is awesome. The soundtrack is absolute perfection, every tune is a jam. There is one minor issue with the game though, at the start you might have issues getting the hang of the combat system and the boss fights but when you master them no harm will be on your way. Paper Mario The Origami King is a thriller, it’s fun in every way from the combat and bosses to the worlds to even the soundtrack it’s all there in this complete package, don’t let the minor issue get to you the game is absolutely worth it especially for the humor. It may not be the classic Paper Mario RPGs from our pasts, but its something more. Something new. The story is good and funny. My only complaint is the battle system. In game battle requires you to move the monsters to certain positions to increase damage. This is fun at first, but will be a little repetitive after 50~60 matches. The rewards for battles are all coins, which would be more interesting if we can get more different items. Despite these complaints, I still pretty enjoy the whole game and I would recommend people with switch should give it a try.

    PS: I would like to give this game a 8.5/10 but I can not. Therefore, I give it a 9/10 since I have a great time playing this with my friends.    … Expand

    Gráficos muito bonitos, história, ambientes do jogo são ótimos e a trilha sonora também é muito boa. Único problema é o repetitivo modo de combate que a única vez que sai da mesmice são nas batalha contra os "chefões" do jogo. Ótimo jogo, recomendo pra todos os amantes de MARIO!

I was caught off guard a few times by how much I laughed out loud, or felt very strongly for Olivia or even the Bomb Om.

    Music is fantastic and at times surprising that it's in a Paper Mario game. Each song fits the mood and scenery perfectly

Not a fan of ALL the battles being done through the puzzle ground lay out (meaning the basic folded soldiers, i avoided them to simply avoid the 5minutes it took to battle them). Love the story throughout. The ending, was heart breaking to me. I didn't want to see Olivia become competitive nonexistent. My only complaint really is just all the battles were the same. In comparison I would say the super paper mario wii is still superior. I hope to see more super paper mario games in the future.… Expand

The game gives you plenty of opportunities to avoid them (even without literarily running away from enemies). The boss battles are great. When I noticed that „weapons“ are wearing off, I thought that would be a „downer“ like when I heard about it in „Breath of the Wild“. But like in Zelda just don‘t worry, you‘ll always have enough hammers and shoes at your disposal. I never backtracked once. I personally consider the game not to be too easy to be enjoyable. Yes, you will hardly see a „Game Over“ screen, but that is not something that makes the game less fun to me.    … Expand

    For example, the battle system. At first I was interested because it was different from your standard Turn-based combat because of the the tile switching and stuff. And it is! It’s a pretty good battle system. However, the attacking itself is a bit... weird. A perfect attack and a weak attack have almost no difference in damage. And there are items, but there’s no reason to use them since they do less damage than normal weapons and are really just no different. You can also defend, but that’s only useful during bossfights really. There’s also toad town wich you can go to to buy weapons and items, but you always have a huge supply of them, so there’s really no reason to. The system is a lot better during bossfights, as there’s a lot more different combinations you can make and different things you can do. Talking about bossfights, using regular everyday objects such as scissors, tape, or rubber bands. The bossfights are a lot of fun. So, the battle system is pretty good, but has a big flaw.

    The story is phenomenal. There’s just so much charm in it. That definitely gets a 10/10 from me, no questions asked.

    The graphics are pretty good. I mean, you can’t really make a game about paper look more realistic, and some of the ending cutscenes look like they came straight out of a movie, so yeah.

    And this game is no short game either: I played for a few hours almost every day and it took me 4 weeks to complete. So definitly buy this if you want something that you want to enjoy for a long time.

    The music is great and very rememberable. There definitely has been some thought put into that. The bossfights all have unique music (except for the vellumentals). However, I think the final boss music should’ve been a bit more unique, as it sounded very generic.

    In conclusion: definitly give this game a try. You won’t regret it. I would give it a 9,5, but there is sometimes lack of detail and unpolished game aspects, so it gets a 8.8 out of me.    … Expand

The only thing I didn't like is how there was no EXP for battles, but they were still useful to some degree, rewarding you with coins which with you could buy accessories and weapons. The world is so much fun to explore and there's always something in the dialogue that makes me laugh. The battle system, while not perfect, has a certain fun to it and the boss battles are unique and interesting. I'm currently on the blue streamer area and I loved the water vellumental fight, and I'm super excited for the rubber band boss. Definitely would recommend, even to an older PM fan. The only thing I wish was different was partners, if we could have a party and have the battles scale in challenge and size along with your party, I think it would give a great sense of progression, which I feel is limited with how the party system works. Otherwise, great game, would recommend.… Expand

The narrative is one hell of a blast and utterly (and I can't stress this enough) FULL of puns, jokes and humour that would make you either laugh or at least smile.
    The only downside I saw (which is why I'm leaving a 9 instead of a solid 10) is    Oh my, what a great time I had playing this game. Level design is absolutely gorgeous. But if you're looking for a great game with wonderful music, diverse settings, hilarious writing, gorgeous visuals, and lovable, well written characters, The Origami King does not disappoint.

    The battles are fun and some of the later ones are pretty puzzling. The boss battles in particular are all super diverse, force you to think, and are tons of fun. Some people say the battles are pointless because they give EXP instead of coins, but honestly I never ran from a fight. Battles are fun, so you don't need to attach some arbitrary incentive like EXP to make the player want to fight.

    It's a shame review bombers brought the score down. The user score is way lower than it should be.    … Expand

    I enjoyed this game . the combat system does need work i.m.o it gets stale,and i noticed myself trying to avoid combat quite a few times because it feels a bit pointless without a xp system even though you do get coins/confetti.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Paper Mario: The Origami King is a seriously great game. It blows both Color Splash and Sticker Star out of the water. Granted, I liked those games too, but this game is really good. Story is great, especially with deaths and sacrifices that make you realize how emotionally invested you are into it. Level design and the lack of a world map is great. Collectibles, treasures, etc., are a fun addition and add several hours of gameplay into it. Partners are another great addition from the original 3 games, while temporary, they add a layer of depth to the story and setting of Paper Mario and allow you to see there’s specific stories behind each character. Music is another great part of it, I never heard a song I didn’t like. As for the downsides, the battle system is not good. I did not like it. At first it was okay, but as the game went on I just ran. Same can be said for boss battles. They weren’t as bad, but still not great. And there’s no reason to fight. As the game goes on, you have upwards of 50k coins. I had around 65k at one point. The lack of any kind of EXP is disheartening, but the semi-reintroduction of Badges is a step in the right direction. The final boss fight didn’t feel like a boss fight, instead it was another puzzle. The lack of original characters, as well as distinguishing features for characters like age and gender, is another huge downfall to this game. Every character is a Toad, or a Goomba, or a Koopa.     Paper Mario: The Origami King is easily the best entry since The Thousand Year Door. Never has innovation felt so fresh and welcoming for a Paper Mario game. Its puzzle ring combat is challenging yet rewarding and you'll want to explore every vibrant and beautiful area in the game. This feels like the end to a classic trilogy. (Sorry, Super Paper Mario)

    I'm unsure why this game isn't getting the love is deserves. Sure, it's no "Thousand Year Door" but it's still a great game. Plenty of RPG elements, challenging puzzles and rewarding boss fights. If you like Paper Mario you'll like this game. 9/10

    I loved it. It has actually funny dialogue which I haven't seen in a game in a while. It really got some chuckles out of me. The start is a bit more battle based but the further you go the more story there is. I think this is a must play on you switch

This review will be split to four things, overworld, battle system, enemy design ( I choose enemy because as far as I know, nobody talked about it), and completionist view, so lets start with the overworld, the overworld is filled with many things like really pretty graphics, other people might not like the 100% paper themed world, I really enjoyed it, especially because most games I played had different styles, but somehow felt he same so the paper theme was a nice change of pace. the overworld is also filled with collectibles like toads that have sometimes have pretty funny things to say when you save them and tons of what is basically cool looking action figures that look that that also describe whatever the figure is, there are also not-bottomless holes that you can fill with confetti that you can get from almost everything (because everything is confetti), the last thing I will talk about is the worlds, there are 6 different areas in-game that I won't describe because this is a spoiler free review but all I will say that each world has it's own theme that it's mission revolves around which is normal for a game but the themes are still pretty cool. Now I will talk about the oh-so controversial battle system. The battle system is a literal turn based battle system because you turn rings to arrange enemies to get them all in a single turn, and while other people might absolutely despise the battle system, I find it very fun and refreshing, and yes I did avoid most battles, but I do that in every single RPG I play and never because the battle system is boring and that not having EXP is also pretty nice because I don't like to grind for a boss just to get destroyed by the next one (AKA every single hard mode RPG I played) so not having EXP is pretty nice there are also boss battles that instead of arranging the enemies,
    you arrange a path to hit the boss's weakpoint. the battle system is also supported with the gear system, the gear system is just equipment that you buy with coins that you get from battles and overworld stuff like not-bottomless holes and ? mark blocks and to counter a point I see a lot in this game's reviews, items get pretty expensive later on, and weapons breaking helps with losing money. Remember toads, well they can help in battles by solving some of the puzzles, healing you, and damaging enemies which reduces their annoyance factor. Next is enemies design. Since the game is themed around origami, most enemies are are origami and are all possible to make in real life (neat), most of them look like kinda creepy and unsettling which is probably how they are supposed to look like, there are also paper macha enemies that eat the world and create non bottomless holes and instead of using the normal battle system, you need to beat them in the overworld by hitting a sticker on them with the hammer so they aren't invulnerable to hammer hits from every other side. the bosses have my favorite designs even though some people might say they are lazy because they are literally just stationary work materials, and I LOVE that, each boss had attacks depending on what they are. My favorite was the ninth boss that always uses an attack that can 1-hit kill you (you could probably guess what it is). Now to the final category, the completionist view. In this category, I will talk about how completing the game 100% is, and was hard but fun. most stuff like saving toads dosen't take long but can sometimes be just a little bit frustrating, but not too much. Collecting the figures is the same as the toads, but the real challenge is the trophies. The trophies can range from hitting all ? mark blocks, to playing all games in a game show without failing any one (that was a nightmare) but they aren't almost impossible to get. Sadly, there aren't any special thing that you get exept an extra cutscene after the credits, but the journey more then enough for me. Overall, paper mario the origami king is a great game, but if you think about buying it, you should watch some gameplay for it until you decide to buy it or not.

    Original battle system, but à little bit easy in "random" battles. The direct battles on the files, or bosses, are better.

    Any Nintendo fan needs to play this game on its own merit. Don't think of it like an installment in a series. As a standalone experience, there is a lot to appreciate. I've paused and taken screenshots of amusing dialog and cute photos throughout the game. Those that don't like it I fear have not truly given it a chance, and perhaps judging it against what they want the game to be instead of appreciating the developer's intentions.    … Expand

    This game is a 10/10. Better than TTYD. All the neck beards that haven’t showered in “a thousand years” keep saying it’s not a true paper Mario game, well it is. The combat is the best out of all games, and the puzzles are the perfect difficulty. The boss fights, and music is also KILLER. Would recommend 100%!

    One of the highlights of this game is the story. I will talk a bit about it here so if that worries you skip anything in (). (SPOILERS!——
    Each and every character in Origami King is filled with life, identity and humor. The game strikes an incredible balance between humor, netrual, and serious. This is a modern big N game so don’t expect the next Majora’s Mask or Partners in Time but it knows when to be serious when to be neither and when to be funny. However, Due to Nintendo being safe the team was not able to make unique characters. But they still tried anyways. 8/10 story.)

    -Gameplay-
    —Overworld—
    Mario does not control super well in the overworld. I will admit I played a lot more Mario and Luigi than Paper Mario but it just felt, off. Mario only can really jump and hammer and it’s weird for a Mario game even a Mario RPG to have this horrible small jump. It just doesn’t work right. Overworld battles are ehh... I know a lot of people like them but to me they were alright. Not bad but I think they did a good job by putting just enough in for it not to get old but it doesn’t whear on you. The puzzle elements of the overworld are very very good however. And I think puzzles are a great fit for the series. Same with all the collectibles which are ironically Toads but it is a great deal of fun finding them all. 7/10 Overworld
    —Battles—
    Battles are great as well, It uses a unique battle system that is made very well. It uses this game’s greatest strength by making them like a puzzle to solve. You can use coins to buy extra time to solve the puzzles and pay the toads to help you. If you correctly solve it you get a nice attack bonus and that satisfying ah-ha! moment. It takes out EXP/Star Points/Love/Whatever and has coins. I love this coin system. It is so much more elegant. It takes grinding out completely. And makes it so that it’s more up to skill if you win or not. You get upgraded via coins by going to the mostly balanced shops and getting temporary upgrades. Which work like BOTW except you have a permanent hammer and jump. And get health by finding toads. (Except once which annoys me but I digress) Which allows you to still do hard playthroughs just like the old games by avoiding badges, health, and shops. You can also use items and the combat really didn’t get old till the very end but they were able to make less encounters happen when it got old. 10/10 Combat. Perfect.

    Origami King has one of the hands-down best soundtracks in a video game period. It’s kinda hard to describe it but so much effort was put into the smallest details. 10/10 Sound design.

    Finally, the art. Along with the other things this game’s art is excellent. It takes the design of Paper Mario and perfects it. The game is gorgeous and it is impressive because they would have had to painstakingly fold every price of origami in real life and get it right. It is breath taking. And it is flowing with originality as well. 10/10 Here as well.

    A wonderful game, well designed, definatly an underrated game that should be a must-play for anyone that has always been interested in the Paper Mario franchise. It's not like the old trilogy, but it's the best step Nintendo has ever take into the right direction of the franchise.

    I have never been into the Paper Mario Series before but wanted to give it a shot. In my opinion the story totally delivers, I was hooked after a couple of hours and enjoyed it up to the end. There were even some dramatic and sad scenes in there, which is not that common for a Mario game.

    The game may have a combat system that takes some time getting used to, but it's still absolutely worth playing. Just for the beautiful world, the great humor, the good story and one of the most lovable characters in video game history. Anyone who doesn't take Olivia to their heart has no heart.

    I am honestly impressed (in a good way). I thought this game just won't be for me but after playing through it i can definitely recommend this to everyone. Whether you're a paper Mario fan or new to the series this is an excellent entry in the series. Probably the best out of modern paper Mario games.

    Amazing soundtrack, good story, etc. This game is one of my favorites games, i really like the battle system. I have bad anxiety and when i play this game i can calm down and feel good, amazing game i really like it its pretty good

    I think we should take Origami King as an independent game and as an adventure game and not as an RPG and a continuation of the saga, seeing it that way it works great in most of its aspects.

    Good but needs to add xp. absolutely huge improvement from colour splash though, infact i think its better than pm64. I havent played TTyd so i cant say if its better or worse.

    Really enjoyed the game, open world adventure each new level brings new interesting challenges and puzzles. The battle system is a bit boring but that does not take fun out of the other stuff. The boss battles have their own unique battle system which is really fun.

    I also really enjoyed the story, finding toads and collectibles and adds an extra layer to the game. It really feels like I'm Paper Mario, doing whatever Paper Mario does. Honestly, the battle system is better than people say. I like how this game handles puzzle combat. The best part about this game is it's basically color splash and sticker star but it adds a few things from the older games to get the best of both sides. The dang environments are Origami and they each have their own banger theme to them so it's just a win to hear a track and explore the beautiful Paper World. It really feels like this is peak Paper Design here. It even has a similar mechanic as color splash where you fill in a part of the environment! What makes this even better is the new gimmick made possible by motion controls. It's wacky, it's creative, and it's enjoyable! The best part is, you get to use it in battle too! Now aside from the flashy art and effects, there is instances where some attacks might be very ineffective to the boss's health but there is obviously a more effective way to deal with each of them. The plot is as simple as writing your own name on paper but that's just another mario trope. The action is great and even though there isn't any EXP, Mario still grows a little stronger just by collecting Max-up Hearts which I like doing. The battle system doesn't really have much strategy and half of the time it's the same puzzle you gotta solve but because of the exaggerated effects and the music, I don't think you won't be running from too many battle just because of how flashy this game is!… Expand

    Nos ha gustado mucho a mi hijo Leo de 6 años y a mi. Hemos vivido muchas aventuras super chulas. Y nos íbamos pasando el mando para compartir. Hemos conocido muchos personajes que nos han emocionado. Me han encantado los doblegaciones de los papeles elementales. Recomendamos que todo el mundo lo juegue.

    Un juego muy fresco y divertido. La mecánica del juego es un pseudo RPG con combates por turnos (un sistema de combate nuevo y bastante ágil).

    El juego en si está dividido en los típicos mundos de los juegos de Mario, con algo de plataformas y puzzles.

    No es un juego difícil, es entretenido y la historia esta bien.

    Hay que destacar sus diálogos muy frescos, con humor y muy actuales.

It's full of charisma you would expect of a Mario game, and looks so beautiful! Loved how they fused the origami esthetics into the environments. So charming and creative. However it works really well during the bosses battles. Maybe with some small tweaks they would get the perfect balance of a good battle system. It's not bad though. It's possible to shorten or make it easier by throwing coins to the audience formed by the toads you find hidden around the world. But if there's something that really annoys me is this origami partner you have the whole game. Remember Fi from Zelda Skyward Sword? Just as inconvenient. And last, but not least, please get rid once and for all of these f... sliding panel puzzles.    … Expand

    After reading many reviews that gave it a bad score I didn't got it until 2023 when it was discounted. Surprisingly I liked it a lot, the game is really good. The combat may get some times a bit tedious if you don't want to think but is not so bad as others seem to think.

    Ebenfalls wäre schön gewesen (aber kein Muss) die Schnellreise-Röhren auf der Karte zu sehen. So muss man sich die merken.
    Ein Hot-Swap für’s Zubehör wäre eine weitere Steigerung. Hat man die Toad-Glocke aktiviert, muss man durchs Menü rascheln um die Frageziechen-Glocke zu aktivieren.
    Manche Rätsel (wie. z.B. die Kristall-Augen der Türme) fand ich für mein Alter zu kryptisch. Die drei Tempel gegen Ende fand ich böse.
    Für ein RPG fehlen Angaben wie z.B. Stärke etc. eines Rüstungsteiles
    Warum kann ich Items nicht verkaufen beim Händler? Ich muss die entsorgen?
    Die Rate Show am Quell der Farben war zwar witzig, äußerst witzig, aber für mich ebenfalls nicht mal ansatzweise machbar.
    Ein Completion Bildschirm nach dem Durchspielen hätte alles abgerundet.
    Alles in allem muss sich durch die Community kämpfen, die wenig gute Haare daran lässt. Verstehe ich einerseits nicht, da Intelligent System hier einen fehlerfreien Job macht, aber andererseits doch ein bisschen, da bspw.. in meinem Fall die Kämpfe zu schwer sind ohne Leichtmodus.    … Expand

    All the characters have a lot of personality, the visuals are stunning, the world has a lot to explore and the story is really good with a lot of unexpected twists.

    Your first battles are good but after a few time the gameplay starts to be boring it's the same board and techniques over and over again if it didn't have the timer it would be extremely boring. The boss battles are an exception though, they're actually really unique on their own and they need a little more strategy to be defeated.
    Basically, this new entry to the Paper Mario series has a lot of charm in it's characters, world, story and boss battles that are all unique and many times unexpectable, It's a shame the regular battles are boring.    … Expand

    Un juego muy divertido con un humor hilarante, musica increible, graficos acordes a armar un mundo echo de papel y carton con un monton de elementos coleccionables que amplian la historia original. No le pongo un 10 solo porque el modo de batalla se vuelve algo repetitivo para el final del juego.

    Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
