The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is an amazing JRPG that expertly handles its extensive cast to conclude this arc. The pacing respects the long history players have had with these characters to deliver a narrative that respects fans. This isn’t a game for those who haven’t played the previous titles, as it addresses overlooked plot points and relationships that could spoil those games. It doesn’t bog down progression with feeble recaps and instead marches ever onward with confidence. Trails into Reverie is a reunion among reunions, a capstone among capstones, and a soul-stirring special experience you won’t find in any other game.

A fantastic send-off for a cast of characters I’ve become attached to, Trails into Reverie is a superb RPG with the most refined battle system to date and an engaging story you’ll be sad to see finally come to an end.

The truly staggering achievement of Trails into Reverie, however, is that it manages to bring some true catharsis and poignancy to nearly nineteen years of connected storytelling, something that no other video game series in existence can claim.

Trails into Reverie is a fine epilogue for Crossbell and Cold Steel arcs, offering necessary closure and clear hints about the series' future.

Trails into Reverie is an all-star excursion that feels like one big franchise festival; your more traditional Trails campaign being the spine of what can be a brilliantly robust RPG, complete with more than enough gameplay depth to keep even the most hardcore players happy. As an epilogue to the Crossbell and Cold Steel games, it can seem a little tired in terms of creativity, but its faults are easily overlooked when you're back in the saddle with all of your favourite heroes.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie may not mark the beginning of a new narrative arc, but it serves as a celebratory culmination of a beloved RPG series. With its well-crafted characters and intricate political storytelling, it offers a final chance to revisit the rich Trails universe. While visual aspects may show their age, the engaging gameplay and memorable interactions make this a worthwhile experience for dedicated fans. For newcomers, starting with earlier entries in the series is recommended for a proper introduction.

Trails Into Reverie is a hard game to recommend at the best of times. Are you a long-time Trails fan who wants one last hurrah with some of your favorite characters? Do you find it exciting to see how that baker NPC turned out? Then it has a lot to offer you. As a stand-alone RPG, however, it's almost inaccessible, and you should play the other games first. The extremely poor QA work in this title means that even die-hard fans will likely have a hard time enjoying the game; the well-translated script is surrounded by a truly unacceptable amount of bugs. If you're still on the fence, I'd recommend waiting for a patch. Otherwise, it's a crappier experience, as without those problems, Trails into Reverie could've gotten a much higher score.

C's route is also a breath of fresh air to the Trails cast. Lots of fun things to do in the Reverie corridor and the turn-based gameplay remains as solid as the previous entries with tons of more customization. Not as great as Sky the 3rd, but this will definitely satisfy Trails fans if you have been following the series since the Sky saga. Expand

However – that journey is one of the best I ever started in my video game history and this is an insanely strong pay off for the Crossbell and Erebonia Arc.

Reverie is the best game in the Trails series in terms of story telling and pacing – because it can shine so much due to the world building and character arcs all the other games established. The main story itself is also very strong, yet I would not rank it amongst the best of the series. However it ties together a lot of loose threads and gives us amazing character development for characters that felt „unfinished“ after CS 4. It also introduces a few new characters that instantly became favourites of mine – Falcom is just that good of a developer.

The gameplay itself is very close to CS4, adding a few more tricks, but overall the same. You still have a variety of equipment and accessories, quartz, master quartz, orders and arts. There is so much you can do here and you can get lost in these RPG elements.

The game is also way more linear than other titles, which I personally enjoy, but it does take away the sense of exploration and hidden stuff, like hidden side quests etc. Due to the extremely big cast of 40+ playable characters, the story telling via 3 different routes splits those up nicely. It does get a bit chaotic at the end though.

Which is also my biggest issue with the game: All the characters are amazing story wise, but when they come together and you are tasked with creating a team of 8 it gets extremely difficult to pick a proper team. Furthermore, you will need to switch accessories and quartz around a lot, which can get annoying as there are no options to save load outs and fast re-equip them.

Overall, an amazing entry, to the best ongoing RPG series that exists – there is nothing comparable to Trails out there and everyone should try it.

Fantastic characters, engaging battle system, great music and fun gameplay. Something that FFXVI can only dream about. I just wished that we could get it sooner in EU compared to Japan and they had bigger budget to pump up the visuals a bit more (characters look great but the environments are still bit outdated). Nevertheless, this is a real JRPG with all the best from the genre. I recommend it to all jrpg fans out there Expand

With two established protagonists sharing the spotlight, the story could have been better than this. Instead it turned out to be a disjointed mess. Out of the 3 routes, only one of them was good. Lloyd's route had a strong 'rinse and repeat' vibe. Rean's route heavily revolved around Rean only, the rest of his party felt like mere cheerleaders. The third route featuring the new protagonist C was by far the best. It felt fresh, and while C was indeed the center of the plot, each of his teammates had significant role to perform.

Thankfully the battle mechanics were still pretty fun although the bloated roster made battle setup feel cumbersome. I understand this was intended as fanservice so every player could build their own dream team consisting of their favorite characters which I can appreciate but they really should make team management a little easier and streamlined. In the end I only regularly used like maybe 10-15 characters, the rest were perpetual bench warmers, neglected and forgotten.

The Reverie Corridor and side contents were a nice addition but they weren't able to raise the game to the standards I'd expected it to meet.

I played 20 hours and it still doesn't convince me. Its story and narrative is trite and the epicness of its previous installments is absent here.

This is the weakest entry in the series.

It's just too much of everything. Too many characters, too many quartz, too much equipment, too many gameplay systems and minigames all thrown at you way too fast.
I felt overwhelmed with all the stuff. You unlock new characters, quartz and equipment so fast, that you can't even keep up with upgrading slots, picking equipment for characters and organizing their quartz. Because when you do it 30 minutes later half of your party is changed for story purposes and you'll have to do it all over again.
At some point I just stopped to care for upgrading slots, equipment or quartz and just ran with the equipment the characters came with. Also the amount of minigames would be ok, if they were optional. But they aren't. You need to do them in order to unlock things you need for the base game, like additional character slots. And why the frick can I skip story cutscenes but I can't skip cutscenes of those day dreams, that sometimes just give a bit side info on characters and sometimes are outright nonsense like the magical girl stuff, where you have a sailor moon like story just with the Trails girls.
Why do I have to sit through those nonsense cutscenes, that take 15 minutes to finish even if I skip the complete text, while I am able to skip actual mainstory cutscenes?!
