Ok, so, first things first. What I liked about the game: the graphics were nice, specially the characters models and their facial expressions, which looked above average. The weapon variety was also nice, although I think the order in which you unlock them felt unusual (your first weapon is an OP handcannon, whereas you only unlock a weak pistol much later on). I also REALLY liked the soundtrack, overall atmosphere and visuals. You were always on edge thanks to them. The story was also pretty cool and the voice acting was top notch. I didnt like it though that they intentionally left loose ends in the end so they could justify selling us a future DLC. What I didn't like: the gore was not as good as I thought it would be. It often felt cartoonish, and very much far from real. Prior to the games release they said that the gore system took years to develop. Well, I didn't look like it. The blood didn't feel real and many death animations were straightup bad. Also, I didn't like it that it was pretty hard to switch to a new weapon during more intense combats. Many of my deaths to bosses were because of that. Speaking about bosses, there weren't many: just 2, actually, one that was reused multiple times and the final one. Overall though, great game. Recommend it. Expand

It's like eating a cookie thinking it has chocolate chips but it's raisins.
It's very nice but the gameplay is horrible. the puzzles are repetitive.
    Disappointment of the year.
    10 hours of infamous gameplay.
79 euros to waste for an insufferable movie full of bugs on ps5!
Worst of all is that they want to sell us the ending as a DLC!!!!!!

Another one of those developers lacking creativity. One if the final boss fights is a real challenge, but to boring and uninspiring. Add to that the cluncky, inacurate controls and I lost all motivation to continue.

The graphics were ok not exactly the next gen i know games are capable of today. They looked very washed to me and the hdr implantation was trash. Frame rates dropping in certain areas and it’s completely obvious. The voice acting was very good and I really liked the main characters just wish we had more back stories and more relationship building instead of just throwing them out there. The story was ok, there just wasn’t enough, it was too simple and your kinda looking for more. This game was definitely a build up for future games they just need to fix some gameplay issues. If your looking for basically a very ok dead space clone then sure you can get this but I would just wait for the dead space remake. Overall i would give this a 7/10. The Good: The graphics are swell. The Bad: 1) Camera control during combat is a mess because you can't lock on to enemies. 2) Since the resources in the game are so limited, it's impossible to fully upgrade all your gear -- you can only fully upgrade maybe 3 out of the 6-7 weapons in the game. While this makes you choose your upgrades strategically, it also makes combat very repetitive because you're relying on the same 2-3 weapons and tactics for the entire playthrough. 3) The story is derivative. 4) Your carrying capacity is so limited that you'll spend a good chunk of the game fiddling with your inventory. 5) The game is less concerned with presenting a scary atmosphere and more into cheap jump scares. Often, enemies jump out of nowhere, hitting you with unblockable attacks that are less scary than they are annoying. You literally can't avoid taking damage from these surprise attacks and you can't see them coming to avoid them. 6) The controls are just bad. Often, when I wanted my character to run, he wouldn't on the first attempt. It takes a full 2 seconds to turn around and look behind you. Switching weapons mid combat when you have more than 2 it's a real pain. Etc. 6) I could go on-- wasted potential of their cast, lame upgrade system, and overall just not very fun. This game is destined for the bargain bin. Expand

Performance wise, I got it in PS4, and while it’s not the best, it was alright. Upgrades feel like they actually have an effect on your weapons, and they’re expensive enough to the point where you have to be smart with your money, and I like that. Unfortunately, you can’t get every upgrade in one play through, and while that would usually be ok, the lack of a new game plus makes this really upsetting, and most likely wouldn’t warrant another play through for most people, although I’ve beaten it about 5 times. Being a horror game, I was hoping for it to be scary, but it unfortunately isn’t and the scares are very predictable, making this more of an action game with horror elements. All that in mind, I had a great time with it, and I think it’s worth a try if you would like to try it, just maybe wait for a price drop if you want. 7.5/10 Expand

TL;DR It’s not perfect, but I still found myself enjoying the game quite a lot. An overall solid 7.5 master of none, I would probably wait for a sale unless horror games are your jam.
The Callisto Protocol is an interesting case of attempting something new, yet familiar, in an effort to catch a similar lightning in a bottle that the original Dead Space absolutely nailed.

The Callisto Protocol is an interesting case of attempting something new, yet familiar, in an effort to catch a similar lightning in a bottle that the original Dead Space absolutely nailed.
I’m an absolutely huge fan of Dead Space, have been so since I played the original over ten years ago, and I can faithfully say this isn’t quite the Dead Space we know and love. Despite this reality, I’ve come to really enjoy what The Callisto Protocol does different from its spiritual predecessor.

    The Good:
    - The atmosphere is absolutely top notch, the attention to detail in each area is astounding. The graphical presentation, sound design, and overall feel of the environment compliment each other well, emulating that feeling of being all alone in this cosmic nightmare.
    - The presentation and overall graphical fidelity is very impressive, with a fantastic art direction and some of the best graphics I’ve ever witnessed.
    - The performance’s by the cast are all amazing, each character is brought to life through their portrayal. Josh Duhamel (Jacob Lee), Karen Fukuhara (Dani Nakamura), Zeke Alton (Elias), and Sam Witwer (Leon Ferris) were all such a treat to watch and listen to in this title, even if I wish there was more Sam Witwer because I just love that dude lol.
    - The gunplay felt great, each weapon was responsive and the impact felt brutal and effective, even if the guns aren’t quite as iconic as a trusty plasma cutter.
    - Although I am somewhat conflicted on the overall design of the melee combat, I must say that when it hits and works with intended fluidity, it does feel fantastic smacking around the biophage.

    The Bad:
    - The overall design of combat can feel cumbersome and hard to nail without much practice. For the first half of the game I nearly died at least once per encounter, whether I was killed by a full group of 5 enemies or a smaller instance of just 2. I replayed the game right after my first playthrough on the hardest difficulty and was doing much better in comparison, but I can see how this could be frustrating for some, the biophage does not show mercy. I’m apologetic with this aspect because I think once the flow of combat, specifically the melee focused combat, clicks and you understand the best way to approach the hordes on Callisto, you’ll start tearing through all the enemies. - For me, the story is pretty underwhelming. I was really missing the more personal and psychological aspects of a space based horror game. While there is a story and there are sections of intense psychological distress, I felt it just wasn’t at the level I was expecting, which left me feeling a tad disappointed.
    - The lack of open spaces was noticeable. While the latter chapters do open up a good bit, I felt that the first half of the game was almost purely a corridor shooter. Without a doubt my favorite chapter is called “Lost” and it’s where the game really opened up with Jacob finally dawning the space suit seen in all the advertisement and you wander over the frozen surface of Callisto. The “Lost” chapter is where the game really had me in its grasp, where I was really enjoying my time with it. Unfortunately, majority of the game did not carry that same feeling the “Lost” chapter absolutely nailed.

    The Ugly:
    - The Callisto Protocol is just not that scary. A heavy reliance on jump scares is noticeable, an aspect I was very underwhelmed by.
    - The lock on feature the camera utilizes during combat makes it difficult to counter multiple enemies attacking you at the same time. For the most part, enemies will attack you one at a time, however, it’s inevitable that in some situations the enemies will get a cheap hit in simply because you cannot view the attacker and effectively counter, which is beyond frustrating.
    - The enemy variety, for me at least, is the most glaring issue within this title. There are roughly about 6 different enemies, including the final boss enemy, it’s really a shame in comparison to the necromorphs of Dead Space.
    - The boss scenarios are frustrating, simply put. If a boss/mini-boss physically hits you a single time, it’s an instant kill and you have to start the fight over. I’m all for difficulty in games, I love a good challenge, especially so during a boss encounter, but I really do understand why there was so much buzz about this title being too difficult.

    Conclusion:
Overall, it has issues that are noticeable, however the overall structure of the game is appealing and worth a playthrough imo. Is it as good as Dead Space 1 and 2? I’d say no, unfortunately. Is it better than Dead Space 3? Ya, without a doubt. If you like horror and don’t go in expecting a carbon copy of Dead Space, you’ll probably have a good time, even if it’s shortcomings do standout.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The story is terrible. Why does this cost more than the PS4 version? There are many masked loading screens with those ventilation shafts. $70 and it doesn't utilize the strength of the PS5. It's not like this game has much to load anyway, seeing it's just corridor after corridor. The physics are a joke. The level design is terrible with lack of enemy variety.

For goodness sake, why are there still developers in 2022 not allowing me to skip cutscenes? Enough already. I don't want to watch a stupid movie about outer space. I just want to punch monsters. I'm getting real sick and tired of unskippable cutscenes. It's as if these video game directors failed to make it to Hollywood and got bullied for their interests in astronomy, norse mythology, WWII and all of that stupid bookworm trash, so now they want to take out their frustration on gamers. Whatever personal problems you developers have, go and sort them out. But don't you dare drag me down that rabbit hole, because now you're starting to make it personal with me. It's one thing to make a horrible game, but it's 100 percent inexcusible to not allow me to skip cutscenes in a AAA game. I paid $70 so I should be able to skip whenever I want.

As I mentioned earlier, there's no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. The developers were too cheap and lazy to include multiplayer. The only good thing in this game is graphics, but the graphics sacrificed the gameplay and multiplayer. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.

Story is pretty solid for a survival/horror title. Deeply enjoyed this title. I do wish there was a navigation system though. Sometimes I think I'm exploring but I accidentally progress the story. Also would've liked more enemy variety but what we got is still pretty great. I do wish it had new game + upon release but I hear they're adding that later so I won't hold that against it. For a horror game it's not very scary but I honestly haven't been scared of a horror game in the past 10 years or so. So I don't really hold it against it as no other horror game tends to scare me anymore nowadays. Also that story doesn't really take off until the last two or so hours of the game. Otherwise it's mostly just soft teases and such. Unless you listen to all the audio files that you can collect. Those really flesh out the story too.

I think where a lot of people are getting held up on this title is the comparisons they draw to Dead Space. Honestly don't know why outside of the fact that that the game director is the same. But that doesn't mean it's the same title. It also doesn't help that other games journalists kept talking about how it's a spiritual successor and all that jazz. But the devs explicitly said multiple times that they didn't try to make another Dead Space. So I think if anyone plays this and goes in open-minded just willing to see what happens then I think they would really enjoy it. Kind of breaks my heart it's getting all the hate it is for some performance issues.

Anyway if anyone is actually reading my review I highly suggest simply trying it for yourself. Ask a friend if you can borrow it from them or something. Get a sense of the game and try it for yourself. And if you enjoy it maybe go out and buy it. Support the developers on one of their first games as a studio. Cuz I can't play this game without seeing the love and care that actually went into it.

I had to make a Metacritic account just to review this game. If you enjoy Sci-Fi Survival Horror do not listen to the negative reviews, this game is great for what it is.

Graphics: 10/10 Phenomenal on PS5, face rendering is some of the best I've seen in ANY game. Environments are dripping with stunning detail down to the cracks in the concrete. In quality mode, the ray tracing is even coded into rough surfaces, meaning you can see your rough reflection on a wet slab of concrete.

Performance and Bugs: 8/10 Certain areas dip in frames and sometimes there will be loot that falls through the ground. I experienced some audio glitches where a character would get cut off in the middle of their lines, but nothing major. Performance mode on PS5 held 60 frames at 4k pretty well and quality mode holds 30 frames.

Gameplay: 8/10 This is a BIG one. So many reviews and videos have bashed this game undeservedly for it's combat, I found it very entertaining and was always hoping to run into enemies to get more of it. The combat is interesting for this genre, melee hasn't been thrown out the window as it was in other games like Dead Space. Melee here seems to take a lot of inspiration from Last of Us with some tweaks to make it more challenging. You dodge with the stick, which becomes second nature a couple hours into the game, and then you counter with whatever you would like to counter with. You have many tools available to you. Would you like to heavy strike you enemy into a wall of spikes? Go ahead. Prefer picking them up and launching them across the room so you can engage the guy that just came out of a vent behind you? Do that. Want to just unload an explosive shotgun shell right into their chest and watch them become zombie smoothie? Me too. Look, many people have gone into this game with false pretenses. People go in thinking it will be a third person shooter like Dead Space and it is not that, it could definitely be later in the game as you get upgrades, but early on you REALLY can not go into encounters blindly without thinking about it. One great thing about this game is that I was ALWAYS in danger (Maximum Security difficulty) throughout the entire game. You don't get that false sense of security like you do with other survival games where you feel like your character is severely underpowered at the start and severely overpowered at the end. This game strikes a balance where you are weak at the start and strong enough to defend yourself by the end, but not strong enough to cake walk even basic enemies if you let your guard down. One negative I found was that it really felt like some areas dragged on a little too long with our adding anything to the story or giving you any enemies to fight, I can think of only like 2 areas where this happened. Enemies act intelligently, jumping into vents when losing a fight or when they can't reach you, only to come out of a vent at a later time.

Variety: 7/10 This is a big negative for me, boss variety. You face about 10 different enemies, one of which is a miniboss type enemy that appears about 3-4 times, another is a phenomenal robot enemy that you really only face like twice which is a shame because the strategy in engaging these enemies is really unique and fun, and the others you will encounter often but I don't want to spoil each one as the game introduces them for you. Then a single boss enemy that gets repeated twice with a second phase added the second time around. This isn't horrible for being the first game in the series but it also isn't great considering games like Dead Space had many memorable epic boss fights so I would've preferred more large scale fights with greater strategy or complexity involved. Environments, while gorgeous, did lack certain variety in scale. The majority of the game is very claustrophobic with very narrow hallways and corridors. While this works to create tension when done right, almost 90% of the game is done like this and it kinda spoils the fear since you know where you need to be going and where you can be attacked from. Weapon variety is decent, not a huge pro or con, you get the usuals and you can also carry all weapons on you at once.

Sound: 1000/10 This is an audiophiles dream game. Every step, every creak, every nasty explosion of guts hitting walls and then sliding down said wall. It's incredible. You need to wear headphones, both to improve the immersion quality as well as to make combat easier, enemies will try flanking you through vents at times and the sound is designed so that you can hear an enemy crawling under/above you through vents as they get closer to their intended exit so it's very easy to keep track of enemies all around you.

Fear: 3/10 There were really only a few moments I felt truly afraid here. The atmosphere and sound design is there and it's phenomenal but the combat itself breaks up the tension often so there's no time for you to overflow with anxiety.

It feels like the dev team are not survival horror fans and failed to understand the ethos of the genre, or they were just blinded by their clout of being the OG Dead Space guys that they thought they could do no wrong.

I really wanted to like this game because in a world where there is mass consolidation of dev teams, I wanted an independent studio to be able to output something great, but this is not the case here.

The pros are the graphics & atmosphere are fantastic but unfortunately that's about it. The story is thin & lame, the characters are forgettable, dull & boring & the combat is the worst. They encourage close combat to which is fine except & have implemented a dodge mechanic and opt for using the left analog stick & the player will move it left or right to avoid attacks, but which is not effective during intense combat with multiple enemies. The use of a button would have been more practical. Instead of using the D pad or a button to switch or to rotate through your weapon selection, you use the right D pad & then you can scroll through your weapon selection. Again, it's very clumsy & awkward & you can easily choose a weapon with no ammo by accident leaving you open for attacks. The reloading animation of a weapon is ridiculously slow, so if your hit by an enemy during that time you will not have done it. You have health injection gun that's used for low health but here again the animation is sooooo slow that you will not complete increasing your health if you're hit by an enemy. They start you off with only six slots for your inventory but no storage box for stashing extra items, so you're limited on item you can carry & unable to pick up extra due a full inventory. Also, a big negative is that the game is nowhere scary but rather creepier & jump scares becomes repetitive, predictable, & boring. Expand

The Callisto Protocol introduces Jacob Lee, an interstellar transporter who gets embroiled in a corporate affair. That’s pretty much it… and gameplay… many people are complaining but I actually find it satisfying. Yes, Jacob is kind of clunky, but it is not bad. I was expecting a shooter, but this game felt like Resident Evil 4… yes, I shoot a limb, run into the foes and give them a nice combo, and automatically a QTE pops up heralding a nice shot from my gun. To conserve AMMO I realize I can take the monsters with my melee attacks, expecting that nice QTE to blast through these foes… but when you get surrounded, yes, it is tricky and sometimes disappointing… but then I unleash a rain of bullets to either immobilize the monsters or give me space for my melee attacks. Combat is good but it can be overwhelming, so you need patience.
Additionally you have a nice GRP gauntlet that grapples foes so you can launch them against other monsters or against environmental threats. There are 5 weapons and you can improve them by collecting credits from fallen foes, or chests.
You can parry and evade and is simple: you just need to hold the directional button left or right and if the enemy you’re facing is throwing you a combo, you need to alternate left and right until you have a window of opportunity to launch an attack. I like it, is different and is good!
The game is not linear from my point of view, yes there is a main path but it has branches for you to explore and get items. I hear others complaining about this, this is not am open world, it is a survival horror experience.
Graphics are superb. I have not seen such detailed animations in a PS5 game, it is good, environments are detailed, dark, gloomy, spooky. When you die, you die in the most goring way… sound, music, and acting is good.

Overall an interesting game, there is potential to keep the franchise moving. I was expecting Dead Space 4, and got a different experience that was troublesome at first to understand the gameplay, some frustrating moments in some boss battles, but after several tries, you’ll get there.
Get it, this game is really good. Performance on PS5 is almost flawless, I never got a crash from the game, just a couple of interrupted animations here and there but nothing major.
Great game, I enjoyed it, and now that I feel more at home with the gameplay, I will go back and increase the difficulty… my recommendation is to start in either normal or easy, as it could be easily frustrating. I did die, a lot, but never felt powerless, with the exception of a few boss battles. Get the game, nice SciFi survival horror experience!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Callisto Protocol is an unsettling, frustrating, and at times very much an endless torment of a game. You start out with nothing for the first few hours battling strong and terrifying enemies that are taken down only by your own self determination and careful precision to make it to the next reforge to get stronger and yet the more you go the more, the deeper you descend, the more you realize that the creatures aren't scary anymore and are more in your way than anything. The devs wanted to make sure that you had everything you needed to win, with each upgrade your confidence as a survivor grows and makes you a better fighter. The environments were made to seem plain by the reviewers out there but they are carefully made, offering you EXACTLY what you need at all times, whether that be ammo, a fire cannister to destroy your enemies or a spiked wall to turn them into darts on a dartboard and the claustrophobia is REAL, making me many times feel that I had no space and just wanted to get to the next room by any means necessary. The soundwork here is truly amazing, making me hear literally everything going on around me, warning me of someone coming through the vent or jumping down or telling me there is danger around the corner if I'm smart enough to avoid it and take the upper hand. The weapons at your disposal each serve a purpose and can be used in a creative way to make every unique encounter that much more manageable. The creatures themselves are grotesque, brutal, and calculating, the A.I. here is very smart and if you're not careful you will get ganged up on or one of them may just pull you into them so they can give you some bloody combos. The visuals are second to none of course, I don't know how they pulled this off on console but the textures, the fidelity, the careful attention to detail of every piece of the environment is something truly special and I especially was in awe of the lighting here and how everything is just so handcrafted with love and detail. Truly the best looking game I've ever played.

Last but certainly not least is the story. The Callisto Protocol is a domino effect type of game, every action has a reaction and likely a consequence and that is what happens here to Jacob. What happens to him is his own doing, everything you experience as the player could have been avoided and now you're paying the price for it for turning a blind eye to corruption and the greed of scientific and human advancement for profit. The people you meet, the ones who die, the ones who survive, are all in those situations because of you and it's as simple as that. There is no smoke and mirrors here, the message is loud and clear. You, Jacob, are the reason this is happening on Callisto, what happened on Europa, and you have a responsibility to fix it and honestly I very much appreciate that there is no real complexity here and that you feel the full weight of responsibility and want to make things right more than anything. The Callisto Protocol takes a while to get into and yet becomes a game that is hard to put down and not think about, everything I did felt memorable and everything I saw is something I want to forget. Final score 9/10

I wanted to play the game, come back to my dweeb gamer social circles and tell everyone what a refreshing, ground-breaking innovative product this is within the sad sea of the gaming industry that it is today. But instead of it being a beautiful sailing ship in it, it turned out to be just another piece of floating garbage.

I'm not going to even get into the details, you can find them all out by reading other reviews. In short - it just does not play or feel good. You walk through corridors, maneuvering a broken melee combat system. Finished this one hallway? Good. Here's another one just like it. This time? More enemies. Did we design a combat system that makes it fun and engaging to encounter them? NOPE. Just keep trying your luck positioning yourself right while holding a left thumb stick at a certain direction at all times. Game design 101.

There's nothing interesting, thrilling, nor exciting that wants you to keep sinking your precious time into it. It's a generic journey that feels more like work than a fun experience. If I were you, I'd take my bets out and replace them on Dead Space Remake, because in 2022 the best game design seems to be the one from 14 f'ing years ago.

For a game like this, which involves a lot of dark corridors with flashing lights, I really recommend turning off performance mode so you can get the ray tracing effects. The sound design is also another area the game excels in, especially with the ambient noises. The voice acting is good, but can be a bit cheesy at times. I think the sound design is a very great feature of this game as it really adds tension to the slower moments and really adds to the brutality during the action moments, it’s something you have to experience with headphones to get the full effect. This game has the best graphics I’ve ever seen, and the sound design is up there.

The gameplay was decent, but didn’t feel fully intuitive at times. I believe it felt a bit clunky because the controls felt “heavy”. Just all movement felt like it was in slow motion, but the action animations felt like they were sped up really fast. I also found the combat a little too simplistic for this day and age, but despite this, I was able to enjoy it. The biggest issue with the combat is that it works very well when facing one or two enemies, but toward the end of the game it becomes highly frustrating because the combat was not designed to face that many enemies. So it turns into a pseudo-stealth game. It’s not bad by any means, but hopefully the sequel addresses this. The game was a little more linear than I was expecting. I had to mentally switch my mentality from survival horror to action horror to really begin to appreciate what they were trying to do here. I enjoyed my time with the game. It doesn’t really do anything new, and outside of the presentation it doesn’t really do anything new to the formula, but it did a good job reviving the space horror genre prior to the arrival of the Dead Space remake. It’s not a GOTY contender, it’s not anything you’ll remember and want to revisit years to come, but it’s a fun ride. All in all, it’s a solid new game series, and I think there is huge potential for growth with future games.

I found the melee combat system to be so frustrating- ended up setting auto dodge and auto melee up to save from getting too stressed out. The gunplay feels slow and clunky with slow reloads and difficult to switch between weapons in the heat of battle - often it feels like a modern resident evil title in a sci fi / space wrapper.

The story was the weakest element with standard horror fare and little to connect the characters to the world in a truly meaningful moving way. However the fidelity of the characters is so striking it allowed me to accept the sequences for what they were falling into a sort of 'b' movie atmosphere.

Hallways are coated with blood, corridors are cramped, littered with severed limbs and are dimly lit. You can hear the screams of victims off in the distance, it's all pretty engaging especially if your playing at night. The enemies looks grotesquely amazing and so does Callisto's graphics in general. The combat( I'll get to the negatives later) is gritty and in your face, especially the physical combat and some of the death animations. The gun combat isn't anything special or new but serves its purpose. The GRP is easily the best mechanic to me and allows you to throw enemies into shredders, spikes, off cliffs etc so using can really save you ammo. Enemies can be tough, even by themselves so using your gun, GRP and stun baton together seems like what the game designers were going for and that's a good thing since it (kinda) keeps the combat from getting stale. The music and sounds can really get your heart pumping when walking down a smoke filled corridor. And the machine guards are a nice touch from fighting humanoid monsters. The controls aren't exactly bad, I like that you use L1 to run instead of mashing L3, and I like the use of the PS5 speaker when conversations start so that's another plus. some people might not like that there isn't a map but I think that's one of callisto protocol's best features. Well, now for the negatives. First, the story, again, I haven't beaten it yet but the story is pretty meh right now in my playthrough of callisto protocol. It seems pretty straightforward and while that isn't bad, it does seem a little predictable. The characters seem extremely one dimensional, Jacob and Elias doesn't really seem to have personalities and are just doing what the plot needs them to do, I do hope that changes later in my playthrough though but I'm half way through it so I kind of doubt it. The combat is easily one of the biggest problems along with the combat dodge mechanic. Fighting a single enemy can sometimes turn into a boss fight set to bastard mode which I generally like but when two or more enemies show up...your f****d. And that's being generous if all three are In front of you, if one or more enemies are behind you then get ready for a death animation. The dodge mechanic is pretty hit and miss even though the game says there's no timing window but it seems like there is or maybe the game decides whether or not it works but that's with a single enemy, when two or more enemies take a swing at you, your getting hit and it becomes frustrating since you progressively fight two or more enemies at once. Callisto protocol also suffers from glitches from time to time like writing on the wall suddenly disappearing then reappearing, awkward death animations like when you get your eyes poked out, sometimes their thumbs are in Jacobs head instead of his eyes etc these glitches are minor but can be distracting sometimes. And listening to audio while being unable to move really breaks the mood, why not let you move your character while listening to audio files? That just seems lazy. Callisto protocol has issues just like any other game but overall I think it's still enjoyable and worth playing. 8/10 for me. Expand

What matters in the game is the gameplay, the combat is very well designed, fast thinking and cleverly acting allow the player to prevail in the struggles, or if you try to melle a group of enemies, they will eventually brutallize you, still a chance is given, but the point is to use all of your dispossables in order to survive in combat.

Unconventional but highly enjoyable. I couldn't put the game down for hours at a time. The main problems I had were switching weapons during boss fights and enemies attacking me from behind when I couldn't see them, but it wasn't enough to deter me. The game lacks a cruel lack of diversity in the proposed approaches (stealth often goes out the window) as well as in the variety of enemies, bosses, ... in the end, a lack of overall diversity in most of what it offers (game mechanics, weapons, type of proposed approaches, ...).

The difficulty... as some people have rightly pointed out, the change in difficulty is not particularly interesting. The only thing it changes is that in hard, all the mobs are very hard hitting hp bags. A higher difficulty isn't supposed to just increase the amount of lives of the mobs... it just makes things more annoying. Oh, sorry, I forgot that what already looks a bit more like a "real" hard mode (less bullets, less healing items, perma death, ...) was another game mode not included with the base game.

The story is nice and easy to follow but it is very predictable, not very gripping and you don't really feel any attachment or interest towards the characters (at least I do).

The death animations are just gory and, for some of them, bugged in their animation.

The combat system is, in my opinion, problematic. The dodging system is a pain as soon as you are confronted with several enemies and the more you advance, the more the enemies are numerous. In the end, the combat phases just become boring. The weapon switch well... you don't switch weapons in combat unless you have 15 meters between you and the nearest enemy... well you can but you'll probably get hit while you're switching the ***** gun.

I'm more or less halfway through the game and I haven't seen a single boss yet (even though I've searched pretty much everywhere). From what I understand, there is only one mini boss and one end boss.

The atmosphere is good but it doesn't provoke any feeling of fear, uneasiness, ... it's just gory with regular jumpscares (hello **** mobs coming out of the chests) but I don't have the feeling to be in a survival-horror. This aspect is quite subjective, maybe it's just me who is not sensitive to the fear the game is supposed to provoke but I found this aspect rather disappointing.

In short, a big disappointment for me and clearly not worth 60 euros. If you can get it for less and you like the genre, the AD and the atmosphere are nice. Other than that, skip it. The game is not worth its price and prefers to make a huge communication campaign than to release a complete and optimized game.

The commercial policy of the game is more than questionable... hello the season pass bringing two more modes and extra death/kill animations in a 60euros game.

I personally don't have too many bugs (except for the death animations) or optimization problems (ryzen 7 5800X and 6900XT) but, from what I hear around me, I've just been very lucky.

Then the frustration kicked in as the mechanics felt counterintuative at first. He moves slowly, there's no quick-turn, the gun swapping is slow, the dodge is weird, cheap deaths, etc.

But there was something there that made me want to push on.

And then it all fell into place. At some point it all clicked and felt right. I got my head around the mechanics and what the gameplay was. From there I was pinging off my head with adrenaline. Each new area felt intense, and the more I jacked up my guns and gear the more satisfying it felt. Everything has a weight to it (reminded me of Joel in The Last of Us 1), and therefore is really satisfying to pull off.

The sound design and execution is literally the best I've ever heard in a game (I noticed in the credits it's done by Skywalker Sound, so it's no wonder). The visuals are insane and dripping with tension and atmosphere. The story is serviceable, but comes home with some interesting stuff at the end which definitely makes you want more.

Overall I ending up really enjoying it and have finished it 4 times already, trying different play styles on each run, and also getting the Platinum. My only gripe in the end is that it didn't launch with New Game Plus.

The graphic is really impressive, well done, lightning and shadow are on point. Sound impressive and game constantly tries to keep you on edge with sounds. Horror....hmm not that much horror here, cheap jump scares here and there, gory yes but that is it, more on the disgusting side than on horror itself. The gameplay is a mix, you can fill the punch with weapons or baton. The dogging system is hit-and-miss, off-screen indicators are non-existent and dogging takes over so you are unable to move so some encounters could get hectic and chaotic. So combat is good and dogging is bad thing here. Story...what story? The game is short but sweet, at least for me, since I enjoy graphics and action here. Expected horror and left disappointed, story hungry, and sometimes frustrated with dodging. Repetitive survival horror that feels like a life sentence, The Callisto Protocol is as bereft of life as the harsh conditions of the moon on which it’s set. [Issue#23, p.70]

Callisto Protocol makes some mistakes, but in general computing the good wins by far. It is true that it is somewhat angry to see that something with so much potential has not been fully squeezed, but what it offers is already much more than most. We trust that combat system that we have loved and its setting to make the game worthwhile and we would love to see a second installment.

A visually beautiful sci-fi experience which, surprisingly, doesn’t resort to simply cloning Dead Space. The difficulty and the fear factor both don’t reach the heights I’d expect, however. A shame! It could have been extraordinary.
