You are a demon in the Underworld, made out of glass and pain. The Devil has given you a skateboard with a simple deal: Skate to the Moon and swallow it - and you shall be freed.

Ollie, kickflip, and grind your way through the ash and smoke of The Emptylands as you take on a seemingly impossible quest. Learn to master your weight and motion to conquer the weeping concrete. Savour the ritualistic beauty as you set your feet to pop a perfect kickflip.

Skate fast to destroy vicious demons, help a forgetful frog, and save other tortured souls on your journey from fragile beginner to a hardened skater. Push through hell and discover The Devil’s greatest weakness: humility, perseverance, and a disgustingly sweet backside tailslide.

Much like the Skater themselves, let me be clear: this is 100 percent recommendation, Skate Story is genuinely super cool and an artistic marvel, albeit not in the way a Clair Obscur is. Unique, fascinating, a tad realistically frustrating at times, despite the otherworldliness of the world, and a pretty cool time, all things considered.

A skateboarding sim which transcends the genre through its dazzling psychedelic presentation, smart design, and comedic lightness of touch.

In the aspects where it counts, Skate Story absolutely rules. It’s a joy to play once you get used to the controls, it oozes style, the vibes are tremendous and the soundtrack is out of this world. It suffers from the aforementioned control issues and its enormous weirdness might be a turn some people off but overall it’s just a genuine blast to play.

Though Skate Story may be a barebones skateboarding game, the rest of the game is a stunning visual and audibly experience. The game's soundtrack is incredible and perfectly fits the abstract, psychedelic visual style.

As Skate Story’s credits rolled, I wasn’t totally sure what to make of it. Despite its imperfections, I knew I liked it, but I struggled to articulate why. I won’t pretend that every metaphor or symbol resonated with me or even made sense. It’s a deeply poetic journey, and the way to enjoy any good poem is to focus more on how it made me feel rather than any literal interpretation. In that sense, I’ll fondly remember the awe I felt admiring this imaginatively conceived underworld, the adrenaline rush of barreling through courses as a shining beacon of defiance and perseverance, and the thrill of hitting stunts so sick that entire celestial bodies shatter at my awesomeness.

Skate Story is a highly author-driven skateboarding game with accessible mechanics and a distinctive surreal urban style. Its minimalist visuals and Blood Cultures’ soundtrack build a strong atmosphere, but the abstract narrative and repetitive structure may feel distant. A bold, artistic experience that favors mood and interpretation over traditional storytelling.

With a campaign that takes around six hours to complete, I didn’t enjoy my experience with Skate Story very much due to its weak story, the bugs I encountered, and gameplay that feels like it’s missing “something extra” to actually be fun. The impression it gives is that either the game clicks with you and you find it brilliant, or it doesn’t, and there isn’t much you can do about it.
