In the aspects where it counts, Skate Story absolutely rules. It’s a joy to play once you get used to the controls, it oozes style, the vibes are tremendous and the soundtrack is out of this world. It suffers from the aforementioned control issues and its enormous weirdness might be a turn some people off but overall it’s just a genuine blast to play.

And although the sheer number of “cool” ideas stacked on top of each other threatens to collapse Skate Story in on itself, Eng is able to keep it all together—to keep it all moving forward, deeper into Hell, towards a date with the devil, always in tune with the true story of skating.

Skate Story is a surreal, style-heavy skate adventure with a surprisingly tight sense of flow, smart risk-reward combos, and a standout soundtrack. Its hub sections can feel like filler and the camera occasionally struggles at high speed, but the overall trip is inventive, hypnotic, and hard to forget.

Skate Story is not simply another skating game but a myth told through motion, a battle fought through balance, and a journey measured in realms that culminate in swallowing the Moon. The result is a skateboarding game of rare poetry. There is the poetry of the skating itself, the miraculous interplay of body and board rendered with aplomb. There is the actual poetry that accompanies the end of each level. Finally, there are the tender emotions that refract through, and seem amplified by every bailed kickflip in this surreal, shimmering take on hell.

Unlike the glass skater, Skate Story is far from fragile. The combination of narrative, visuals, and soundtrack creates a great title for those who enjoy deep and reflective experiences.

In its best moments, Skate Story is just an unbelievably cool game – and that totally makes up for the slightly more tedious sections.

As Skate Story’s credits rolled, I wasn’t totally sure what to make of it. Despite its imperfections, I knew I liked it, but I struggled to articulate why. I won’t pretend that every metaphor or symbol resonated with me or even made sense. It’s a deeply poetic journey, and the way to enjoy any good poem is to focus more on how it made me feel rather than any literal interpretation. In that sense, I’ll fondly remember the awe I felt admiring this imaginatively conceived underworld, the adrenaline rush of barreling through courses as a shining beacon of defiance and perseverance, and the thrill of hitting stunts so sick that entire celestial bodies shatter at my awesomeness.

Don't get your hopes up if you're looking for a great skateboarding game. This isn't it. But it is a very good game that has a lot of skateboarding in it.

Behind its galaxy-warping visuals, Skate Story is a game about play. Some attach to skateboarding for its competitive potential, but it’s also about enjoying the environment, testing abilities, and teasing adrenaline. It’s about loitering as much as it is about achievement, and Skate Story celebrates this paradox.

Though Skate Story may be a barebones skateboarding game, the rest of the game is a stunning visual and audibly experience. The game's soundtrack is incredible and perfectly fits the abstract, psychedelic visual style.

From its striking wash of chromatic aberration against the glow of the crystaline skater against the forboding hellscape of the skate park, Skate Story is a feast for the eyes and a must-play for skateboarding fans looking for a short but unforgettable indie hit.

While it lasts, this is quite easily the most strikingly unique and visually interesting skating game you can play, and we can't help but respect its relentless effort to go against the grain.

Its minimalist visuals and Blood Cultures’ soundtrack build a strong atmosphere, but the abstract narrative and repetitive structure may feel distant. A bold, artistic experience that favors mood and interpretation over traditional storytelling.

The Skate part of Skate Story is very good, offering variety, pace, and a unique approach to boss battles. But it's less intricate by design than other skating sims, and that's to make room for the Story part. Your mileage may vary on this, and there's clearly a lot of thought gone into every element, but sometimes so much of it comes off as noise. Or maybe you're smarter than me, and you'll just get it.

In Skate Story, the journey through the Underworld has contrasting highs and lows: the many segments of intense speed, psychedelic scenarios, contagious music, and surreal poetic narrative are interrupted by alternating moments of monotonous exploration, banal eccentric comedy, and the frequent disruption of the flow due to any little stumble by the fragile glass skater.

Skate Story is a beautiful and unique skateboarding game with great, stylized visuals and interesting characters. The movement might make you queasy and the skateboarding element could have been developed further, but it does a lot with its premise and refuses to pander to convention, which is refreshing. A wonderful creation, but not always a great game.

With its ridiculous story, unique visuals and brilliant soundtrack, there's a lot to like about Skate Story. Its gameplay is the weakest link here, though, with fiddly controls and other issues introducing a level of frustration that might push some players away.

Despite its share of rough edges, Skate Story still won me over. It leans more on style than substance, but that style is some of the most striking I’ve seen in years, and it carries the experience far. The problem is that the game rarely finds inventive ways to use its own brilliance, leaving it feeling like a journey that peaks too early.
