Jan 9, 2026Much like the Skater themselves, let me be clear: this is 100 percent recommendation, Skate Story is genuinely super cool and an artistic marvel, albeit not in the way a Clair Obscur is. Unique, fascinating, a tad realistically frustrating at times, despite the otherworldliness of the world, and a pretty cool time, all things considered.

Dec 8, 2025Skate Story is the perfect skateboarding game for your friend who always says they’re working on a screenplay but never actually gets around to finishing it. Or maybe that’s you. Or maybe that’s me. Or maybe it’s just perfect for everyone. You’ll be moved, you’ll bump to the incredible music, and most importantly: you’ll shred.
-
Dec 8, 2025Skate Story is a bold and convention breaking skating game that wears its love for the sport on its sleeve. With a satisfying control scheme to master, psychedelic environments to trick through and incredible music to bop your head to, Skate Story is an audio/visual sensation that's only mired by it's confusing gameplay turns near the end. It's a real one of a kind for a genre that's almost as old as the medium itself.
-
Dec 8, 2025A skateboarding sim which transcends the genre through its dazzling psychedelic presentation, smart design, and comedic lightness of touch.
-
Dec 8, 2025If you approach it with an open mind, ready to embrace its surreal presentation and atmospheric pacing, you’ll find something profoundly satisfying here. It’s a testament to how video games can transcend genre conventions and deliver something that’s both technically impressive and emotionally moving. For fans of skating games, artful indie titles, or simply those who appreciate when music and gameplay merge into a harmonious whole, Skate Story is an experience worth savoring.
-
Dec 8, 2025Skate Story is a memorable, fun, and engaging game that, even with its odd details, offers an incredibly refreshing experience not seen in the genre.
-
Dec 17, 2025In the aspects where it counts, Skate Story absolutely rules. It’s a joy to play once you get used to the controls, it oozes style, the vibes are tremendous and the soundtrack is out of this world. It suffers from the aforementioned control issues and its enormous weirdness might be a turn some people off but overall it’s just a genuine blast to play.
-
Dec 8, 2025And although the sheer number of “cool” ideas stacked on top of each other threatens to collapse Skate Story in on itself, Eng is able to keep it all together—to keep it all moving forward, deeper into Hell, towards a date with the devil, always in tune with the true story of skating.
-
Jan 6, 2026Skate Story is a surreal, style-heavy skate adventure with a surprisingly tight sense of flow, smart risk-reward combos, and a standout soundtrack. Its hub sections can feel like filler and the camera occasionally struggles at high speed, but the overall trip is inventive, hypnotic, and hard to forget.
-
Dec 15, 2025Skate Story is not simply another skating game but a myth told through motion, a battle fought through balance, and a journey measured in realms that culminate in swallowing the Moon. With its bold visuals, haunting soundtrack, finely tuned physics, combat woven into skating, and a difficulty that balances punishment with accessibility, it transforms skateboarding into something cosmic and unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression as one of the most original and striking indie releases of 2025.
-
Dec 9, 2025The result is a skateboarding game of rare poetry. There is the poetry of the skating itself, the miraculous interplay of body and board rendered with aplomb. There is the actual poetry that accompanies the end of each level. Finally, there are the tender emotions that refract through, and seem amplified by every bailed kickflip in this surreal, shimmering take on hell.
-
Dec 9, 2025Unlike the glass skater, Skate Story is far from fragile. The combination of narrative, visuals, and soundtrack creates a great title for those who enjoy deep and reflective experiences.
-
Dec 8, 2025In its best moments, Skate Story is just an unbelievably cool game – and that totally makes up for the slightly more tedious sections.
-
Dec 8, 2025As Skate Story’s credits rolled, I wasn’t totally sure what to make of it. Despite its imperfections, I knew I liked it, but I struggled to articulate why. I won’t pretend that every metaphor or symbol resonated with me or even made sense. It’s a deeply poetic journey, and the way to enjoy any good poem is to focus more on how it made me feel rather than any literal interpretation. In that sense, I’ll fondly remember the awe I felt admiring this imaginatively conceived underworld, the adrenaline rush of barreling through courses as a shining beacon of defiance and perseverance, and the thrill of hitting stunts so sick that entire celestial bodies shatter at my awesomeness.
-
Dec 8, 2025Don't get your hopes up if you're looking for a great skateboarding game. This isn't it. But it is a very good game that has a lot of skateboarding in it.
-
Dec 8, 2025Behind its galaxy-warping visuals, Skate Story is a game about play. Some attach to skateboarding for its competitive potential, but it’s also about enjoying the environment, testing abilities, and teasing adrenaline. It’s about loitering as much as it is about achievement, and Skate Story celebrates this paradox.
-
Dec 8, 2025Though Skate Story may be a barebones skateboarding game, the rest of the game is a stunning visual and audibly experience. The game's soundtrack is incredible and perfectly fits the abstract, psychedelic visual style.
-
Dec 8, 2025From its striking wash of chromatic aberration against the glow of the crystaline skater against the forboding hellscape of the skate park, Skate Story is a feast for the eyes and a must-play for skateboarding fans looking for a short but unforgettable indie hit.
-
Dec 8, 2025While it lasts, this is quite easily the most strikingly unique and visually interesting skating game you can play, and we can't help but respect its relentless effort to go against the grain.
-
Dec 28, 2025Skate Story is a highly author-driven skateboarding game with accessible mechanics and a distinctive surreal urban style. Its minimalist visuals and Blood Cultures’ soundtrack build a strong atmosphere, but the abstract narrative and repetitive structure may feel distant. A bold, artistic experience that favors mood and interpretation over traditional storytelling.
-
Dec 8, 2025Skate Story seemingly captures the freedom and bite of skating with ease, while also showing just how difficult it was for developer Sam Eng to reach that point.
-
Dec 8, 2025The Skate part of Skate Story is very good, offering variety, pace, and a unique approach to boss battles. But it's less intricate by design than other skating sims, and that's to make room for the Story part. Your mileage may vary on this, and there's clearly a lot of thought gone into every element, but sometimes so much of it comes off as noise. Or maybe you're smarter than me, and you'll just get it.
-
Dec 8, 2025In Skate Story, the journey through the Underworld has contrasting highs and lows: the many segments of intense speed, psychedelic scenarios, contagious music, and surreal poetic narrative are interrupted by alternating moments of monotonous exploration, banal eccentric comedy, and the frequent disruption of the flow due to any little stumble by the fragile glass skater.
-
Dec 8, 2025Skate Story is a beautiful and unique skateboarding game with great, stylized visuals and interesting characters. The movement might make you queasy and the skateboarding element could have been developed further, but it does a lot with its premise and refuses to pander to convention, which is refreshing. A wonderful creation, but not always a great game.
-
Dec 8, 2025With its ridiculous story, unique visuals and brilliant soundtrack, there's a lot to like about Skate Story. Its gameplay is the weakest link here, though, with fiddly controls and other issues introducing a level of frustration that might push some players away.
-
Dec 8, 2025Despite its share of rough edges, Skate Story still won me over. It leans more on style than substance, but that style is some of the most striking I’ve seen in years, and it carries the experience far. The problem is that the game rarely finds inventive ways to use its own brilliance, leaving it feeling like a journey that peaks too early.
-
Dec 8, 2025With a campaign that takes around six hours to complete, I didn’t enjoy my experience with Skate Story very much due to its weak story, the bugs I encountered, and gameplay that feels like it’s missing “something extra” to actually be fun. The impression it gives is that either the game clicks with you and you find it brilliant, or it doesn’t, and there isn’t much you can do about it.

Dec 8, 2025Regardless of the hit rate, it’s clear Eng is trying to say something with Skate Story. That alone puts it in a class of its own among skating games. Whether Skate or Session or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or even the lo-fi arcade hit Skate City, skateboarding games typically stick to one narrow message: Skating is cool. Skate Story fully acknowledges that — and then builds on it. In Skate Story’s vision of the world, the arc of a flawlessly executed kickflip is no different than Rothko’s stroke. Now go grab your brush.
-
Dec 8, 2025For all of its surreal elements, it really understands skateboarding, and it turns out that hell is the ideal skate park.
