Dec 8, 2025The Skate part of Skate Story is very good, offering variety, pace, and a unique approach to boss battles. But it's less intricate by design than other skating sims, and that's to make room for the Story part. Your mileage may vary on this, and there's clearly a lot of thought gone into every element, but sometimes so much of it comes off as noise. Or maybe you're smarter than me, and you'll just get it.

Dec 8, 2025In Skate Story, the journey through the Underworld has contrasting highs and lows: the many segments of intense speed, psychedelic scenarios, contagious music, and surreal poetic narrative are interrupted by alternating moments of monotonous exploration, banal eccentric comedy, and the frequent disruption of the flow due to any little stumble by the fragile glass skater.

Dec 8, 2025Skate Story is a beautiful and unique skateboarding game with great, stylized visuals and interesting characters. The movement might make you queasy and the skateboarding element could have been developed further, but it does a lot with its premise and refuses to pander to convention, which is refreshing. A wonderful creation, but not always a great game.

Dec 8, 2025With its ridiculous story, unique visuals and brilliant soundtrack, there's a lot to like about Skate Story. Its gameplay is the weakest link here, though, with fiddly controls and other issues introducing a level of frustration that might push some players away.

Dec 8, 2025Despite its share of rough edges, Skate Story still won me over. It leans more on style than substance, but that style is some of the most striking I’ve seen in years, and it carries the experience far. The problem is that the game rarely finds inventive ways to use its own brilliance, leaving it feeling like a journey that peaks too early.

Dec 8, 2025With a campaign that takes around six hours to complete, I didn’t enjoy my experience with Skate Story very much due to its weak story, the bugs I encountered, and gameplay that feels like it’s missing “something extra” to actually be fun. The impression it gives is that either the game clicks with you and you find it brilliant, or it doesn’t, and there isn’t much you can do about it.

Dec 8, 2025Regardless of the hit rate, it’s clear Eng is trying to say something with Skate Story. That alone puts it in a class of its own among skating games. Whether Skate or Session or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or even the lo-fi arcade hit Skate City, skateboarding games typically stick to one narrow message: Skating is cool. Skate Story fully acknowledges that — and then builds on it. In Skate Story’s vision of the world, the arc of a flawlessly executed kickflip is no different than Rothko’s stroke. Now go grab your brush.

Dec 8, 2025For all of its surreal elements, it really understands skateboarding, and it turns out that hell is the ideal skate park.
