    Aside from the graphics and fluid gameplay, everything about this game perplexes me. The biggest con: game is way too difficult (not Souls or Hades) but borderline unplayable. Can’t believe I paid 50 bucks for this… Literally made an account to leave this review

    My GOTY for 2021 without a doubt! So many things to say, 170 hours played and still loving it. One thing though: it takes a bit of free time and perseverance to get the hang of it, but it's worth the effort.

    In a time where franchises are reused and remastered RETURNAL offers fresh ideas in both visuals and gameplay. The start of the game is extra challenging getting used to the loop mechanic but stick with it! The more you explore the 6 biomes the more you are rewarded!     Wasn't expecting much, but it became my favourite game on PS5. Gameplay is top notch, once you start you get sucked in & can't stop thinking about this game until you finish it.

    Amazing game! Fluid controls, mysterious story, and addictive gameplay! Another classic game that in a way, is a genre on its own with a mix of rogue-like elements. Flashy physics and lighting, enhanced by the dualsense. A must play for sure!

    Way too hard, even Harder then the souls games. Here you cant grind and rank up to make sure you beat it. If it was possible to beat it without replay same Maps for days it could been a 9/10 but since im stuckt in biome 3 still i cant give it more then 6/10

    I finished Returnal a month ago, but felt like leave my thoughts here. Hard game with a really satisfying gameplay loop. VFX and sound are top notch.

    Recommended for those into hard game and roguelike

    this game is very stressful but u know tht u can beat it and tht makes you try and try again. i got platinum for this game. i really like its story. housemarque are genius to make this game run without cheap ray tracing. i hate ray tracing on 30 fps. i wish them good luck on their next ip

    Pre patch, was not a good game due to lack of saves. Now that you can save, came back to Returnal, completed, and impressed with the underlying story of the game. Great combat, good story, not.many games like it, feels so rewarding once completed. Great game.

    Everything about this game is amazing. Even if it is not your "type" of game play it anyway and you'll still love it. Truly a top tier game.

    Really addicting third-person shooter. 9.2/10.

    Pros:
    - Great, smooth gameplay
    - Extremely fun
    - Great bosses and enemies

    Cons:
    - Bugs, crashes, reset save data of entire 1 hour runs
    - Ending wasn't as satisfying

    This game blew me away! The dualsense haptics, visual stunning graphics and great gameplay. 10 of 10. It's hard and sometimes unforgiving but that is also a part of the thrilling story and the challenge. You'll have a great time with this!

    One of the best games i've played in a while and one of the best rougelike's, i'm so happy the genre finally has a AAA game. So many unique elements have been introduced into this game that make the gameplay so fun and rewarding to play. Also the use of the PS5 controller Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback is really good. Well done Housemarque! Cant wait to see what you release next

    Best audio experience I've ever gad. I can tell the difference between raindrops on my helmet vs the ground. Fantastic graphics.

    I had to swap some controls to deal with the difficulty curve, but once I beat the first boss, the game was the perfect difficulty for the rest of the way.

    I keep coming back to run it over and over without getting bored. This is my type of game.
    Its like playing a mixture of Metroid/Rouge Legacy/Space Harrier and the Movie edge of tomorrow.

    We don’t deserve Returnal. Amazing and addictive gameplay, engaging narrative, and now with the addition of endless mode and COOP as a FREE UPDATE, Returnal is cemented in my top 10 games of all time. Thank you, Housemarque for this masterpiece!!!

    Brilliant gameplay, the most "Gamey" game you'll ever play with absolutely world class particle effects. Boss fights gave me an adrenaline rush no other game gave me in a long time.

    Now that its cheaper, with saving, co-op and a free dlc I absolutely recommend anyone who couldn't pass or get into it at launch to jump in now.

    Amazing game just made better with the new coop and Tower DLC. Nothing else out there, makes all other shooting games feel slow in comparison. The only truly next-gen game I’ve played on the PS5.

    Абсолютно бестолковая игра, чрезмерный хардкор для растягивания времени. Я люблю SoulsLike и RougeLike игры! И очень надеялся на эту игру. НО это бестолковый кусок чего угодно но не игра!

    Wow. Simply Wow. I got Returnal by accident since it was free on the PS plus extra, and boy, has this surprised me. From a gameplay perspective, this is a fantastic rouge-lite. The graphics are incredible; the adaptive controller support is to the finest of details. And the story... oh, the story... A must-play game.

The game is very hard, sometimes I was very close to rage quit, but, in a magical moment I realized it was possible to mastering the game and after that, it was a Nice ride! I got the platinum trophy before the save state update, so I’m really proud to achieve it… The game mechanics are awesome, the sounds, graphics, everything… The only fault of the gameThe best exclusive of the PS5. Maybe Sony will force Housemarquee's hand on this one as both painted it as a AAA game for the masses, it's not and Sony knew it. It's a game for a very specific niche.

    Later on when you reach other biomes you'll be able to collect new weapons and items (via data cubes) which can unlock for future cycles, these are way more powerful. Also when you reach a certain point in the game you'll start with 15 proficiency by default, which boosts your starting point. The game is a struggle, no doubt and there are definitely a few bugs but they're free and far between.    … Expand

    You know a game is bad when the developers though its fine to rely on the console sleep option + a uninterruptible power supply for a save system while holding the console hostage (cant play other games or you lose the "save")
    Should be dumped and removed from store just like cyberpunk

    It's a buggy mess. Doors don't open so you have to restart the cycle. Enemies that shoot you after they've died. Enemies that shoot through doors.
    There's an audio bug since the recent patch where the game makes a loud booming glitch noise sound instead of the sound effect.

    Returnal is an amazing title. Something new and different from previous Playstation exclusives. Of course it's a truly difficult and unforgiving due it's rogue like game, but that's what makes it refreshing and different.

I'm sucker for punishment. My adrenaline will get so pump by dodging and try not to get hit by the alien fire. When you beat the boss and head to the next biom or level, it so worth it.     I really wonder who had the idea to make a roguelike when there is so few exclusive game for PS5 at this time.
    No save point and no difficulty mode bring together are serious dealbreaker for me. I would have wanted to love this game but in this state It's impossible for me with family or work.
    Just a waste of money, it's really sad .

    Seeing an Indie Studio make a AAA game that they want to make gives me hope for the Gaming Industry. I picked this uo because I love Hades and I was not disappointed. 10/10

    Exclusion has a new name. Returnal. No savegame(s), no level of difficulty and it's crashing (without possibility to save...great combo).

    Great game for 5% of gamers. And this is an exclusive. Great job Sony, not.

    Don't buy it now for this price.

    I’ve played every Housemarque game so far and this is the best thing they’ve ever created. A wonderful PS5 exclusive this is essential if you love serious sci-fi storytelling, built on a rogue-like ‘souls’ style progression within a dynamic combat system. Visually stunning the game looks and sounds incredible with inspiration from Alien, Solaris, Lovecraft’s ‘cosmic horror’ and Dark Souls.I’ve played every Housemarque game so far and this is the best thing they’ve ever created. A wonderful PS5 exclusive this is essential if you love serious sci-fi storytelling, built on a rogue-like ‘souls’ style progression within a dynamic combat system. Visually stunning the game looks and sounds incredible with inspiration from Alien, Solaris, Lovecraft’s ‘cosmic horror’ and Dark Souls. Yes this game requires focus & time put into it to make progress - but if you do you will find a very rewarding action RPG that is difficult to put down.     Overrated game, a lot of bugs and crashes, fog and popping in PS5, the gameplay makes me feel dizzy, the enemies are repetitive. Death Stranding was killed by that but in The Returnal nobody says nothing. Also the game have a 10gb pre-patch. Days Gone was criticized a lot for the day-1 patch when only had 2gb. The marketing around this game are massive but the game is just a poor game.     The game has some Performance issues such as random freezing and frame drops. The main mechanic of the game I feel gets in the way of the overall design as you spend a good portion running back to certain boss rooms or what have you. The bosses attack in a sequence rather than mixing up their attacks and this ultimately kills a lot of excitement as far as how to take on said boss. The gameplay is fun, it's just that with every boss death, I find the will to fight for another 30 mins to get another go at the boss eroding. And it's hard in a way that it is unforgiving, doesn't give you any leeway in terms of what's available to you (weapon choice? nope. keeping health? nope. any sort of guaranteed leveling? nope. any way to keep progress beyond a couple of traversal things and RANDOM perks you might or might not get? nope!).
    I would be great for the price of $40 - a standard game, for a niche player base. But at full extra next gen price of $70 (if you're in a lucky region, right?) - no, I don't think so.
    I spent the money. I loved 10 hours of the game. I am now at 15+ hrs, and I already am about to think twice if I want to spend time on the game, considering the gratification (or lack of thereof), I got coming this way.

    Hardcore folks will like this. Tight shooter, all that kind of stuff.
    But for general hardcore (Souls, Sekiro, Hades) - this one could be WAY WAY over the head (it is for me).

I know it’s a roguelike, but to lose EVERYTHING when you die? Come on!? When you die, you get sent right back to the very beginning of the game, and you die A LOT. And you can’t save anywhere within the game at anytime.     It's rare that a game occupies my mind in moments of other activities (work, gym, hiking, etc.) but that's exactly what Returnal is doing. It's haunting my thoughts and making me examine my time-management for the next opportunity to explore this immersive and creepy world.     I love Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro. So Im ok with difficulty. But this game is unfairly complicated. Im stuck in the third biome and have to go through the biome 1 over and over again with no progression at all. And there are crashes ruining part of my attempts. I really dont have time to make million runs hoping one day to succeed. Its so frustrating and Ive paid my money for this.I love Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro. So Im ok with difficulty.     What a thoroughly enjoyable experience, within the genre it represents. A nice balance of mystery to the story, action to the gameplay and puzzles to progress. The Metroidvania elements of unlocking new key areas to explore as you cycle back through the gameplay loop.

    Bright vivid neon colours, dark ambiance and interesting AI deliver another Housemarque masterpiece.

    First of all: This is NOT an easy game, especially for the now and then gamer. It is quite possibly harder than Demon's Souls, yet by far not as rage inducing. The premise of Returnal is based on the old rogue-like arcade games; today its similar to how Geometry Dash works. That being sad I strongly belief that more games should implement a similar mechanic, as it makes    **NO SPOILERS**

    First of all: This is NOT an easy game, especially for the now and then gamer. It is quite possibly harder than Demon's Souls, yet by far not as rage inducing.
    The premise of Returnal is based on the old rogue-like arcade games; today its similar to how Geometry Dash works. That being sad I strongly belief that more games should implement a similar mechanic, as it makes playing much more rewarding and nervewrecking. You constantly find yourself being afraid to absolutely not die, because if you do everything besides beaten bosses and map exploration is going to be lost. It really makes the game so much more immersive: For example I often found myself in the dilemma "should I risk going for that one item?.. if I die I'll EVERYTHING".
    I love it!

    Let's talk about the gameplay in detail.

    THE MOVEMENT! Holy moly is this a smooth shooter, I have not yet seen anything like this before. This definitely makes Returnal top tier in the shooting genre. Combined with the everlasting fear of death this causes a huge addiction potential - BUT IT IS SOO FUN. I cannot understate this, playing Returnal filled me with pure joy and excitement (and stress).

    Level design: Before I played Returnal I begged it wouldn't be another generic alien world... and believe it truly is not. Once you load in or teleport into another area (it only takes seconds thanks to the SSD by the way) I was like: "Yeah, this is AAA" - if not AAAA by todays standards ;). There is such a variety of designed elements you recognize, it creates an immersion you hope other games would offer too. Not a single thing seems off or not thought through. Level design wise this is equal to Bloodborne, the Uncharted series, Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex just to name a few. Outstanding work!

    Shooting and weapons and Fantastic Beasts: Returnal offers a wide range of futuristic weapons. Upgrade to these can always be found on the map in crates, "loot rooms" or just straight up laying around on the ground.
    THE ALIENS! Sometimes you find yourself sweating your ass off, trying so hard not to die and then suddenly realising: "What the f*ck is going on right now??!?!?" There is so much stuff on the screen, yet it looks absolutely stunning fighting the various different types of enemies. Somehow the projectiles and beams and massive firework-like explosions are never cluttered and always smooth.

    In summary:

    Returnal manages to reinvent the rouge-like genre for the PS5 with a Doom-Eternal smooth gameplay out of this world. It is through and through thrilling, never letting you bored or stop wanting to play. With it's outstandingly creative level design Returnal produces an immersive alien world with an unclear, yet super interesting story path. Quite frankly I would give this game a 10/10 while playing. Yet objectively I must say I would have loved to see more "in-world mechanics" (just like the "elevator"), the sound design loses to games like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and some areas are too slim and repetitive to enjoy the perfect movement and exploration possibilities.

    Very bad game. it’s completely forgettable in this context — beyond recognizing that doing a lot of damage and being able to take a lot of damage makes the game easier. I now plan replicate this build on every run, and if the world doesn’t give me the necessary gear to do that, I’m going to feel like it’s wasting my time again.

    Average gamer, dropped 70 quid on something I can't get off the first biome. I don't have time to spend hours on a playthrough, at the very least give a save option. At best follow Insomniacs example with Spiderman and add another tier of difficulty to make it easier for us casuals! At the price tag EVERYONE who buys it needs to get their moneys worth from it.

    This game is highly unusual and so many people just don’t know how to measure it. It looks like uncharted, has elements of demon souls, plays like super stardust HD and is wrapped up in a dead space mystery. Yeah you die a fair bit but because the core game is so solid it is always a pleasure to go again, just like super stardust. I seriously love.

    The mbince is amazing when you play you're in the returnal universe

    The dualsense is really extremely well used it is next gen this controller (the only one for that matter)

    I paid 55 euros day one in store and my PS5 runs everyday now And those who put 0s are pitiful

    Possibly the worst character design in the history of video games. A technically very competent game, but in serious need of the ability to save your game so those of us with less spare time stand a chance. Environments also very samey and often feel quite empty. Massively over-priced too.

    Well first the good stuff. Graphics, gameplay, soundscape and all that is well crafted and very atmospheric. And especially with headphones the world feels really alive and you are constantly on your toes.    Returnal is a game of mixed feelings. In overall, it is a good game but there are few things that need addressing. Of course this just about my strategies and how I approach the game.

    Well first the good stuff. Graphics, gameplay, soundscape and all that is well crafted and very atmospheric. And especially with headphones the world feels really alive and you are constantly on your toes. Gameplay is also top-notch. Sometimes you want to stay far away from enemies to snipe them safely. And sometimes you need speed and agility with close combat. That is all really great. And the story is ok, but maybe it is not the most important part of the game anyway.

    But...

    Then there is the but. First of all I do not feel that this game is too hard. I appreciate that I need to play well and I respect the roguelite idea. I have never played one before but I get it. But in overall the game is too unbalanced in favor of misfortune and lack of choices. That may sound weird because it is all about choices. You have just one weapon and two items in use. So you need to make smart choices.

    But in my gameplay I feel that there are zero choices. First the weapon. I still haven't beaten the third boss and I have already noticed that only Tachyomatic Carbine and Hollowseeker are viable options. They both have enough range and the fire rate is good. When game is hectic, I really want that at least some of the bullets reaches enemies. But if weapon lacks range or I need to be very accurate with my shooting, it becomes unnecessarily hard.

    Then I can have two items at my disposal and I should be careful what to choose. But even here I have no choices. In this game health is scarce and I really need all I can get. So all the items I want to collect are Silphium Vials and Large Silphium Vials. And if I happen to have both, I will never trade them with anything else. So to me, the other interesting items are wasted and unnecessary.

    Also for malignant items the risk factor is too high. If I am careful, I can get all necessary upgrades via non-malignant chests etc. Sometimes I take parasites but very rarely. The debuff -effect in them is mostly just too nasty. So that is out of the strategy too.

    And currently I have only one viable strategy to progress.

    In the first biome I try to collect as much obolites as possible by killing enemies and collecting. And then I try to reach the shop. Most of the time I have enough obolites to buy the Astronaut Figure. And If I am lucky, I have enough to buy Large Silphium Vial too. So I am buying health.

    Then I travel to the second biome. In there I get a guaranteed Silphium Vial in the start. So, at this point both item-spots are most likely reserved. Then I only need to stay safe and hopefully I am able the get the weapon I like to advance. In this biome collecting obolites seems to be unnecessary, because the shop is so far away and is totally not worth the risk. When I reach the hallway which has the shortcut to the second boss, I go forward a peek through the door. If there happens to be the big hall, I go in and check the item on the pedestal. If it is a Silphium Vial, I grab it and return to the shortcut to get to the third biome (or second boss).

    So at this point if I am reeaaally lucky, I have a Astronaut Figure, Large Silphium Vial and two small ones. So all health. Nothing else matters.

    At this moment in the third biome I just need to travel through it to the third boss. I try to stay safe and be smart with enemies and collect every single silphium I can find. Also I may encounter shop or other manufacturing pedestals. And if I am lucky I might be able to buy more health, or maybe artefacts.

    So in a way it is all about luck and "I might get something", which is demotivating. And then there is the kicker. If it happens to be so, that there is an area, that happens to have more hard enemies than usual, I may lose all my Silphium Vials just to stay alive. And after that there is only one choice again ...restart... Because there is no way to go back and somehow collect more Silphium Vials there is no point to go forward anymore. And that frustrates and feels unrewarding.

    So these are my feelings about this game. It could be great, but it gives very little hope to the player if one is not especially good with these kind of games.    … Expand

    I love this game, fresh and frenetic.
    If you search a 3th person shooter that is also a roguelike game, this is a good choice.

    A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.
