    Got the game on PS+ for free, that being said I’m not disappointed with it. The game has great visuals, responsive gunplay and music fits the mood it’s going for. A lot of people seem to give it negative reviews stating there is no saves, check points etc but, it’s a roguelike game, kinda comes with the territory, I just left my PS running which ya probably not a great idea but whatever.Got the game on PS+ for free, that being said I’m not disappointed with it. The game has great visuals, responsive gunplay and music fits the mood it’s going for. A lot of people seem to give it negative reviews stating there is no saves, check points etc but, it’s a roguelike game, kinda comes with the territory, I just left my PS running which ya probably not a great idea but whatever.

    I also see people calling the game super woke and the protagonist a Karen, honestly just ignore those, not too sure how the game is woke other than it’s a female lead?

    That story is meh, you kinda can see it coming at the start, it tries to be a lot deeper then it ray is.

    In the end for me it was free, solid 7/10. Full price I’d say 6/10.    … Expand

    for those who want try have some advise dont pay for this game i get it free in my ps plus extra and im not satisfied.
    you think its a hard game, no its not hard its unfair i tell you why? i spent about 20 hours playing returnal and then i decide that it , its enough wasting my time. when i first time encounter the first boss i decide to grind make my self powerfull enough and after 3 hour i beat the first boss and guess what i kill every enemy in my way to the second boss, in game like dark souls you can go to boss watch their move, reaction attack and just die nothing to lose just few soul. but in returnal i try realy hard to beat second boss and i couldnt and died.........return to zero hehehehe its not funny at all then i quit the game.
    by the way the creatures not interesting for me and enemy fire something at you remind me of contra game in old consul.
    my true score for this game is 5 but i love ps exclusive game.

    The moment to moment gameplay in Returnal is top notch, which is why it's such a shame that progression is so broken that most players will quit before beating it. You can lose hours on a run when you die, and gain nothing from each successive death. The developers didn't learn a single trick from looking at other successful roguelikes.

    If they had fixed the progression and balance issues this could have been a Game of the Year contender. I still feel that there's enjoyment to be had in Returnal, but overall the game feels rushed, unfinished, or poorly designed.    … Expand

    The game would be 10/10 for me if I weren't a completionist fixated on getting a platinum trophy. I spent too many hours speed-running for the last three ciphers and it ruined the whole experience. I believe I cannot rate the game 2/10 if I spent 112 hours playing it, haha. It brought me joy and challenged me, would recommend it to everyone who is not trophy-obsessed.

    One of the main motifs of the game is dealing with loss and depression. It's hard to use the word in this context, but it is brilliant how the developers presented this everyday struggle. It really drives the point that this is not a struggle to be disparaged and does so in a very unique way.

    As the hero of the story, you don't understand what you're dealing with or even going through. Every time you fail (fall) you start from square one (the crash) and have to deal with the impossible again. And then on top of it, every run (day) is "not fair" in its own way.

    The game is hard, but I really enjoyed going through it. There are some balancing issues but the gameplay and story make up for it. The music is also amazing, the boss fights really feel like boss fights (especially the one with the organ) I really enjoyed my playthrough and I've been looking for some free time to do it again and check out the new DLC.

    Here's the problem. This game is fabulous for about 2-3 hours. It's NEAT. I get the concept but I'm not into playing Dark Souls or Bloodbourne or Elden Ring or any Souls clones anymore. They are tiring and I still have the new Demon's Souls to try and grind through. They are a dead, beat horse. I'm glad this was free as part of my PSN plus package. Would have been severely mad at myself if I paid for this game. The first time I died I could tell it was to advance the story line; had no chance to beat the red beast thing. After that I died a couple of more times getting the hang of the game. After the 4th death the game got significantly harder for no apparent reason other than I was progressing along in the map finding and some of the story items. Then after about 2 hours I had a good base down and I cleared the entire map and move from objective point to objective point to the boss. SPOILERS. I found the machine that takes 6 ether and paid the cost. After I stepped inside, I had no idea what just happened. My hands were sweating thinking if I just died, I would quit the game. I did not die but I also did not know what happened until a little later. I was using a great pistol but only level 1 because one it was shooing 4-5 homing projectiles per shot and two it had the green alt-fire projectiles which packed a real punch. I really did not find a better weapon this run thru. My fav is the rifle though. The pistol worked well until the boss where it did not have much effect. I was able to get the boss down one full bar and 7/8 of the second bar before getting killed. All the Sudden I was born again at the machine that took 6 ether and I was like heck yeah so I ran for the boss immediately. This time I was better at dodging I felt but he mowed me down before I even got one of his life bars gone. I'm feeling like the game made it harder yet again and each hit I did take was packing more damage. After I died I thought I would go back to machine kind of like Bloodbourne lets you shortcut to the boss that keeps beating you....but no. Back to the crash cut scene and starting all over again. I played for 10 minutes, read an online review that someone played for 20 hours and only go the boss twice and died and I was thinking this is probably like Infinity Blade and I'm not about to level up 56,734 times to beat the God King. It was fun for the 3ish hours I played. I quit and deleted it. Thank you PSN for making this game free as part of my package because I'm 99 percent sure i won't play it again unless they add a save feature.    … Expand

    Returnal is a great game for those of you dark souls and Elden ring players looking for a challenge out there this is the game for you. Though it does have some bugs here and there but its fine.

    A rogue-lite action shooter mixed with sci-fi and eldritch/cosmic horror elements, being told with rich lore and intriguing narrative that may leave you guessing at what is actually happening with our protagonist, Selene.

    The performance of this game is smoother than butter. Housemarque made a clever decision in prioritizing frames over fidelity and the result is break neck action that will have you on the edge of your seat as you blast everything to bits.

    The audio is phenomenal, between the environments, the OST and the sound of enemies, you really feel immersed and that you're on Atropos, even more so with a great set of headphones. This game is best experienced with headphones as it can certainly help pinpoint where immediate threats may be coming from.

    Returnal is the best use of Dualsense yet for the PS5, from the gunfire, to the feeling of them reloading, and especially raindrops, the Dualsense only enhances the experience and sets the standard of how its features should be implemented.

    It is a difficult game, (chalk it up to RNG at times), but the delayed gratification you get from Returnal when you are victorious and move onto the next bio-me is entirely too satisfying. You will get better at this game if you focus on killing everything as opposed to just getting to the next level so it certainly helps to take that approach.

    This game is an absolute must-have for PS5 owners (it is on PS+ Extra) and more than worthy to check out if it hasn't already graced your library.    … Expand

    Great gameplay, I actually hope future games borrow the smoothness and mechanics from this Returnal. The story is wack or I don't get it, I should watch an explanation video because its very jumbled and metaphorical. This game hit all my needs tho, I can't think of a single thing it was lacking and maybe going forward they can expand it to 4 player co-op with wider maps or something.

    GOATED OST. Many people sleep on this game but it's dope. Surprisingly well crafted, and it's clear the developers actually play game. Only issues are QOL issues.

The story and cut-scenes are not deep or rewarding enough, and the game is difficult and non-adjustable. I loved the atmosphere but hated the dying system, and would have preferred a more linear experience like a Doom or god of war for example. Overall, if you enjoy the rogue-like genre, you might enjoy this game, but otherwise, it may not be worth the grind. I give the game 72/100.    … Expand

    The visuals and the sound design, they are absolutely fantastic. Pylon weapon makes me giddy. Creatures and world design is a delight.

    That said, the harshness of the save system, or lack thereof, in combination with the overall difficulty made it unplayable for me.

    It's well crafted, but too unforgiving. Most of the gamer demographic these days are adults with children, pets, responsibilities and limited time. For people that enjoy the grind, the puzzle of figuring out how to approach the difficulty, then this is surely amazing. For those of us that can't, it quickly becomes unplayable.

    I appreciate the total commitment to the style from the devs, and definitely respect the players that complete it on this difficulty.

    But I was very sad to feel so excluded from this game. The craft behind it is great, but I strongly disagree with some design decisions.

    Last personal and very subjective thoughts, mostly just a plea to the developers:
    I really wish you'd implement a mode for the rest of us that also want to experience it. I don't even care if you call it "chicken mode", I'll take anything at this point. I just really want to shoot demon dogs dogs with angry red projectiles, while spacy music plays, but also feel like I make progression worth keeping.    … Expand

Most games when you're on alien planets it's just "ah it's a shooting game, and things here are named Bobblebloop and Bozzlepop so they have five legs instead of two" or whatever. The sounds, the atmosphere, weird random noises and visuals, ugh it's SO CREEPY and alien lol, and I say that in a really good way if that makes any sense. I don't know why I fanboy over this game so much, it's just been tough finding a good repetitive'ish game to mindlessly (but concentrate hard in) play the last few months for me, and Returnal was it. Super-frustrating in the first cycles, but please believe me when I say it gets easier down the line, without me wanting to spoil how and why :P… Expand

    I really enjoyed this game at first, the graphics are amazing and I loved the sci-fi atmosphere. All this quickly wore off on my 100th play through of just the first level. This game is way too repetitive and difficult to enjoy.

    I just couldn't get into this game as I have with other roguelites. Runs felt more like extended boss runs with very little improvement. An utter grind and a disappointment, though the gameplay and visuals are outstanding.

    A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.
