    Returnal is a phenomenol game and the first proper PS5 title. The moment you first feel the rain drops via the haptic feedback on the controller is an event in itself. Sometimes I load the game up when friends visit and just hand them the controller. You can literally feel every rain drop and it builds an amazing sense of environment. The graphics are beautiful and the use of the adaptive triggers is smart. Those cool ideas we saw in Astro are now being applied to stunning use. I now find it odd playing older games without these features. The gameplay is wonderful too. All my experience of play the souls games and Gears of War down the years is now coming to fruition in this game. The game is a 3rd person shooter and has a lovely flow to it once you get to grips with everything. You progress through each area and then have to take on a boss to open the next area. The boss battles become a balleric dance as you learn the pattern of their attacks. Also its a rogue like game which means each area is procedurally generated so no 2 runs are the same. There's also permadeath which means you could be hours deep into a run and then have to restart. This has been a cagey topic with some gamers however for me it adds to the game and is better for it. Housemarque made some brave decisions and I applaud them for it. I'm not going to spoil any of the story but the world building and atmosphere in this game is unlike anything I've experienced before in gaming. It reminded me of playing Control. There's a certain David Lynch meets Ridley Scott vibe that I love about it. Imagine if Alien/Prometheus directed by David Lynch and you get the gist. I loved this game and am working my way to the platinum trophy. For me it's outstanding and has stuck in my head like no other game before. 10 out of 10. Well done Housemarque.… Expand

    If you loved Hades, this is the way to go. Hard game, less rewarding than hades, but amazing graphics and very smooth gameplay which will suck you into a never ending flow

    Don't give up on this game. It is a masterpiece! Tight game play, fantastic audio and of course it is gorgeous. It is tough but fair. Learn from your mistakes and and you can get through it. Impressive all around!

    I am 40 yrs old, been gaming last 30 years, casual games are not cutting it anymore, so had to play challenging games such as Bloodborne, Dark souls series, Demon's souls to satisfy my hunger for hard games, self flagellating myself during evenings after work when kids are asleep. But then comes the Returnal, and rewritten the history of challenging game for me who never tried roguelikeI am 40 yrs old, been gaming last 30 years, casual games are not cutting it anymore, so had to play challenging games such as Bloodborne, Dark souls series, Demon's souls to satisfy my hunger for hard games, self flagellating myself during evenings after work when kids are asleep. But then comes the Returnal, and rewritten the history of challenging game for me who never tried roguelike type before.

    When I died first time after 2 hours of careful run, and had to start again from zero, I realized that this game must be crushed and the trophy hung on my wall.

    This is the game that gives you the rush, the adrenaline you were looking for. This is not just a game, this is a new gaming style.

    Graphics and design 10/10, game dynamics 10/10, sound fx and music 10/10 (music score is Promethean, you will feel like you re in the movie Prometheus, I have to say I am a fan of Ridley Scott scifi movies and music score), game stability 8/10 (crashed few times and wasted my 4 hours of epic run). Randomness of level design, enemy locations and types will make every run fresh and unpredictable.

    I also feel myself like Tom Cruiser in Edge of Tomorrow, where he gradually turns godlike after every death vs aliens. Here is the same mechanism, after days of unsuccessful runs, you will gain immense skills and easily develop muscle memory to annihilate top tier enemies in no time.

    Lore and story is intriguing too, I kept doing runs even after beating the game few times for exploration, lore and new weapons, alternate ending. There is entire forum discussing ending of the game online. Very philosophic ending for me, every one explains the ending differently.

    For me, easily GOTY 2021 for now, and best GOTY contender vs upcoming GoW Ragnarok. Heard many users demanded save game option patch from developers, I am against it, this game must be played without save feature to fully experience it.    … Expand

    Such a great game. The combat is fantastic, and it's such a rush when you 'git gud'. It's basically a housemarque arcade game, but with a AAA budget. The best game on PS5.

    A very painful game that sometimes can drive you crazy. However, the beauty that remains in the plot and horror behind it can worth the hours spent. Certainly, the most difficult game I have ever played (I enjoy dark souls, but returnal is in other level).

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished this game yesterday after playing casually since release.

    The game starts pretty rough, short cutscene and you are good to go. Run, jump, shoot and dodge bullets. The game is a roguelite so there will be progress we carry from run to run. Like for example new weapons or items (artifacts and parasites as well as consumables) are unlocked permanently.

    Action is fine, world is ever changing. 6 Biomes to be explored, each with a really difficult and unique bossfight. The game looks and runs fantastic.

    The only drawbacks here would be: runs are usually pretty long, so it feels kinda bad to die to something you just didn't see after having prepared for something else for an hour.

    There should be another way of "checkpointing" the current run in my opinion. There are some, but an easier one would be much appreciated. One quicksand per run maybe?

    Other than that: the game is hard. Brutally so. It takes time and practice to make progress here. But playing run by run helped a lot, especially when the game fully unfolds in its last third.

    Thank you for adding the suspend cycle save feature! Personally I don’t have hours these days to put towards games so having this temporary save makes this game so much more accessible for me. And still allows it to be played the same way for those who don’t mind the long runs. Now it’s truly the amazing game it should be.

    Really a fantastic game. I was one of the people who didn't have too much difficulty completing it. There's plenty of shortcuts throughout the game's biomes to suffice for not having a save option. There's also the experience and knowledge you gain from having to repeat encounters. Loved the story and gameplay so much. My favorite game of the year!

    Un juego muy desafiante al que llevo unas 16 h y no he conseguido pasar del tercer bioma, si no tienes paciencia y ganas de superarte no lo juegues. Para mi ha sido una grata sorpresa el jugar a este juego, ya que no habia jugado antes a algo parecido, y he de decir que a mi m gusta bastante. El dualsense una maravilla.

If you are, or have ever been, a big fan of old-school bullet hell shmups such as Gradius, R-Type, or Ikaruga, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Returnal. Housemarque Studios did something really impressive here by essentially blending a third-person over-the-shoulder shooter and shmup into a very unique and satisfying experience. If you find Roguelite / Roguelike games too frustrating, or are not a fan of "get good" games as a genre, and I would stay far, far away from this title. ​I think a lot of the frustration people are feeling will be fixed with a few quality-of-life improvements, and I am confident that Housemarque will do so in future updates. I just wish it had released in a little bit better shape. This game is absolutely a 10 in my book, but I had to deduct a few points for the extreme difficulty and few, but major, glitches and bugs.    … Expand

    If you own a PS5 you must play this game. The game also have a suspend cycle option now. Easily a recommendation for anyone who like challenge. Beautiful Graphics, 0 bugs, Amazing game-play. 10/10

While that game is challenging, shooters have yet to capture a balance between defense and offense. Remnant strikes that balance beautifully with a challenging but manageable gameplay loop.     The gameplay is very good but the super shallow story with many plotholes and the dev studio refusing to introduce a game saving mode as an option made come to the conclusion that this game is not worth the asking price but rather worth a few bucks if you want to try the roguelike games.

The true difficulty comes from finding the time to beat it in one play though without turning your game off. Initially I had thought this was a cool concept, however I learned quickly that it was more annoying than truly challenging. Overall, I think my biggest gripe with the game was that (unlike binding of Isaac) the items you could get were not carried enough and did not have nearly enough synergy to them. For example, think of the thousands of combos you can make in binding of Isaac. One good example is brimstone and that other ability that makes your tears go in a circle around you and away. This turns you into a spinning laser wheel of doom. There is nothing quite so fun like that in returnal. I think that was the part I missed/hoped for most. Again, I do want to stress that, in spit of these things, Returnal is a good game. The atmosphere is breathtaking and the controls are wonderful and responsive as is the movement. The story was also very intriguing and kept be going through the (way too long and checkpoint free) 10ish hours. In short, there is a lot of fun to be had here but I can't help but compare it to other games that don't force you to best them in one sitting or games that have far more synergy or fun items.… Expand

Buried beneath all the frustration is some tight, adrenaline pumping gameplay with varied enemies and exciting bosses, but the game is constantly getting in your way of enjoying it. Atropo comunque è bello da vedersi e l'atmosfera di abbandono a se stessi è molto immersiva, ma è anche dicretamente cattivo da punire ogni errore del giocatore. il divertimento però è assicurato e la caratteristica procedurale delle mappe e degli upgrade rende ogni partita diversa. fin qui tutto bene, ma giocandoci abbastanza ecco che vengono fuori i problemi. il gioco è ambizioso, ma crash e bug non sono rari e questo unito alla mancanza del salvataggio è un grosso problema. se in un gioco con checkpoint o salvataggi manuali un crash del gioco ti può far perdere poco, qui ti porta a dover rifare tutto daccapo... comprendo che l'essenza dei roguelike non comporta i save game e le consolle adesso permettono di mettere il gioco in stand-by, ma perchè non permettere di poter salvare il gioco per spegnere la consolle o cambiare gioco?
    anche la trama lascia un po' a desiderare perchè se il viaggio interiore della protagonista è profondo tutto il resto che ruota attorno a lei è alquanto nebuloso...
    inrfine una critica per quanto riguarda i collezionabili. alcuni di questi sono collocati in alcune stanze che hanno un basso rateo di comparsa e questo complica molto la loro raccolta e di conseguenza la possibilità di completare il gioco al 100%. completare il gioco e non poter cogliere tutte le sfumature di questo perchè si fa in modo che i collezionabili ( registri e glifi) siano priaticamente introvabili, è frustrante.    … Expand

    Amazing game.I really enjoyed wandering through Atropos. In my opinion the saving mechanics are not always fair, I lost a couple of runs due to auto-updates of my ps5 and game. Graphics are good however textures get very blur when you’re too close. Except for those few issues, I enjoyed taking the challenge given by Housemarque and I’m looking forward to playing future DLCs (hopefully…)

    Very tough but also rewarding if you stick with it. Just be careful as this game is extremely niche and some people may not mesh with the expectations and play style.

    Not only the best PS5 game to date, but one of my favourite all time PlayStation games. Fun to play, and difficult to master but the game rewards you for your time and patience. Just don't give up, or you will miss out on one of the most amazing gaming experiences to date! Housemarque are an incredible developer, and I hope their new relationship with Sony is going to be a fruitful one!

It feels great dashing and jumping out of danger while blowing everything up around you. For platinum hunters, it is a pain in the butt... I don't believe it was the right call to leave procedural generation up to chance to obtain the platinum... It literally added 3x toVery strong game. I enjoyed every minute of the main campaign... Other than that, a great pickup, (I refused to grab the game at $70 as that is way too much at the moment), but recommend this for under $50.     Quite disorientating to start, but the storyline is superb and quite unsettling. Gameplay mechanics are spot on and the visuals can be truly breathtaking at times, the first proper ps5 game in my opinion.... A must play.

    One of the greatest games of all time. There is a learning curve, but it's highly rewarding for those who stick with it. I didn't think I would ever beat the first biome, and now I have the platinum trophy. In addition to the flowstate-inducing gameplay, it also has some of the best sound design ever in a game. The story is pretty deep and metaphorical.

    That being said, they really do need to add a save feature. It's super frustrating to have to lose progress if you want to take a break and play another game.

    This game is amazing. A showcase of what the PS5 can do and what a good budget TPS roguelite can look like. The symbolism in the story is also strong and while the game is quite hard, it feels very rewarding to play. Best game on the PS5 to date

    I'd normally give this game an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 but the fact that you can't save makes me downgrade to a 5. It is pretty terrible that the devs were too lazy to add in a save function. Overall I really liked the game and it took me right at 19 hours to beat the last boss. It definitely could have had more permanent upgrades and could have had easier settings or something but it was doable.

You start the game thinking you are just fighting aliens in a far away planet but then everything changes when you reach the dark and surprising true ending. Then you discover that you have been playing a horror game all along. A horror experienced by Selene, the protagonist.

Et ordentlig story spill burde ikke være som Souls serien. Det går heller ikke ann å bruke særlig mange av tilbudene for å ikke måtte starte på nytt. Veldig skuffet over spillet!

Everyone's experience will vary greatly depending on what items and weapons they unlock. Compared to Hades, which is a streamlined experience everyone can enjoy, I think Returnal is more layered with complexities to a point that is borderline bloated. I have been waiting and waiting for a game that is challenging, mysterious, and one that is constantly reminding me of classic games, where i actually had to put some real effort and skills, in order to progress further.     Olha, eu não consigo entender como as pessoas dizem que esse é o verdadeiro GOTY de 2021, a movimentação do game é toda bugada, fps caindo no ps5, narrativa não tão bem elaborada, a gameplay que é bom porém não é aquela coisa da nova geração. Sendo bem sincero, esse é um dos dos jogos mais decepcionantes da Playstation Studios.

    The atmoshpere and graphics are top notch. The feeling is like the movie prometheus and that is awesome in my book. The no saving option is a risk in case of lock up/crash but is a fun new way to think. Gameplay is well written and you wanna know more about this mystical place.

The shooting mechanics and moment to moment gameplay is incredible, but the game was made artificially long to justify the full price and added Sony tax. Brilliant, but bloated. Wonderful and disappointing in the same breath. 7/10

    A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.
