    I tested Returnal out because its now part of PS Plus Extra. I have never played a roguelike before and heard that it was quite hard so i was very skeptical at first. After the first 10-20 minutes i already fell in love with this game so much that i couldn't stop anymore. The gameplay and visuals of this game are out of this world. to my surprise i made it through the game pretty easilyI tested Returnal out because its now part of PS Plus Extra. I have never played a roguelike before and heard that it was quite hard so i was very skeptical at first. After the first 10-20 minutes i already fell in love with this game so much that i couldn't stop anymore. The gameplay and visuals of this game are out of this world. to my surprise i made it through the game pretty easily and was able to first-try almost all of the bosses. I never thought that i would like this game, but what Housemarque has delivered here is just a masterpiece of a game. I really hope they do make more of this game, it doesn't need to necessarily be Returnal 2, but like the spiritual sequel would still be enough. I just want to play more of this game. One of my favorite games ever without a doubt and i have played a lot of games already.… Expand

    The game felt like it over promised and under delivered. On top of issues with my PS5 this game did not answer to the hype that everyone was trying to feed into it. I beat the 6 bosses in about 12 hour which did not look good for a game that had a price tag of 70 dollars. Then finished the secret ending in just about 16. The way they try to keep you in the game which feels like forcedThe game felt like it over promised and under delivered. The way they try to keep you in the game which feels like forced achievements to pick up or level everything.

    Honestly the game looked alright for what it was. There were some noticeable pop I got when playing along with when transitions large areas. The image took a dark tone for a bit because everything still did not load in. The color pallet for some bosses felt overwhelming which seemed to just distort or just make seeing anything harder then it needed to be.

    I felt the games overall presentation was so so and the story came to an ending where you mostly have to come up with your own story. But still your character is stuck. More like hell then it was being space exploration. Its mostly a 6.5 hopefully they give it some DLC because the re-playability since its the same ending with no changes really doesn't have you wanting to replace it again.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Returnal is, by all means, absolutely excellent execution of a story-telling technique which rarely is seen in the gaming industry, the "Greek Tragedy". They have managed to intertwine the gameplay mechanics of a rogue-lite with the story premise to hit each of the specific rules which the genre requires. Greek tragedy in itself is a form of theatre which strikes themes surrounding suffering and human misery.

    To correctly explain how this is so greatly achieved I'd like to introduce you to the few conventions behind how these theatre pieces build:
    Time: The entire plot takes place within one day or cycle
    Place: There is one main stage, where most of the story is driven
    Act: There are no part-stories
    Violence: All violence takes place outside of the main stage

    There isn't supposed to be any anticipation. The audience knows what will play out.
    The point isn't to figure out what is about to happen, but rather to learn from the choices the main antagonist has made, and what consequences panned from them.
    The plot is not in the center! But rather; humans, feelings, ideas. Aristoteles made a recipe with all the main ingredients:

    Plot: This is the most important part, and there is only one plot
    Character: It's a tragic hero, you're supposed to like the hero at first, but you'll find his/hers flaws and grow to dislike them based on the choices.
    Theme: You're supposed to learn! There is often an act of cosmic revenge against the plot's hero.

    Now that we know the premises of the story, and the requirements of a greek tragedy we can finally start filling in how Returnal executes all this.

    The plot is as follows: Selene has crash-landed on a planet, with one goal, to fight through it all to reach the end, where she'll be able to send a signal for her to be rescued. In all its simplicity, this is the plot. We as the player know that it'll have an end, and approximately how this end will turn out. The tale of the dying child, the car crash, and other memories aren't subplots but rather a tool used to tell us about the hero's choices and the consequences she will have to deal with. Selen's hubris is by all accounts to become an astronaut. This means she would go to great lengths to reach this goal, often with consequences following those she has power over, in this story, it's Helios (her son, also characterized as the ship she shoots down and abandons).

    The theme isn't just an astronaut setting out to reach that spire and send the signal, that's just the main plot. The deeper meaning and the story which emerges tell us about an extreme want to fulfill the goal of becoming an astronaut. Which leads to the hero pushing away her family and failing to attend to her own child. Her desire to become an astronaut even leads to a car crash killing her child all because she was too distracted with her goal, letting her mind wander while driving. This all leads to the story's theme: finding a way out of loss and grief, where Selene first blames everyone else for what only amounts to her own mistakes. The cosmic revenge mentioned earlier is to not allow her to become an astronaut, even when she has nothing connecting her to the earth anymore. All to finally make her face her choices and to recognize that she is the reason it all went badly, which will break the cycle and escape her depression (secret ending).

    This is the fifth stage of grief. All of the five bosses represent their own stage in grief. All of their names also tie closely into the theme. If you haven't connected the dots yet, the language used for the bosses is greek, as in Greek tragedy. Because most of us don't understand greek we'll have to do some digging to come to the story's conclusion in the same way. The stage is Atropos, which in itself means "the unchangeable". Atropos was one of the three fates who decided when and how people were to die. This undoubtedly ties into Selene's mistake/choice in killing her son.

    The house sequences represent real-life feelings that try to take over the imaginary reality Selene has made up. Rather than real life, this imaginary world has reversed how consequences would normally play out. Here she gets to choose after knowing the risks associated, this is related to how she wishes things were with regards to her choices made in real life.

    We are supposed to learn from this, just as traditional greek tragedies. Selen's life will never get better, but your own life can if you learn from the story. People make mistakes, and mistakes lead to atrocities. People often make mistakes based on good reasons, pride leads to doom and arrogance before fall.

    This game is a blast. It's so much fun and the challenge is amazing. The sound design and the enemy designs are absolutely on point, I love the Lovecraft aesthetic. The gun play is amazing and buttery smooth, I never find myself getting annoyed with the controls. Overall this game is amazing and if you want a really good shooter to test out on your ps5, this is the game for you. At thisThis game is a blast. It's so much fun and the challenge is amazing.     Excellent game! I haven't had such a joyful gaming experience in a long time. Challenging but not overly hard if you take your time to master the game. I encountered one occasion of the door bug and had to restart the run. It was annoying but not game breaking.

    It’s definitely a solid 9. Why not 10? After beating the final boss game gets too repetitive and become much much easier. If you complain about difficulty, you really must s*ck in shooters, the game is very forgiving if you know what to do. And there are some weapons that are overpowered.

    I'm not very good at roguelike games but I really enjoy Returnal. Cool graphics, enemies, excellent use of dual sense. Very tense gameplay.

    From the architecture, level design, music, sound design, gameplay and story, Returnal gave me an experience I would have never expected from a AAA title. This game was a big risk for Sony but one that definitely paid off. Even at a higher price point, I am definitely glad to have spent it. Although difficult, making my new ps5's controller dipping with sweat, the feeling of accomplishmentFrom the architecture, level design, music, sound design, gameplay and story, Returnal gave me an experience I would have never expected from a AAA title. This game was a big risk for Sony but one that definitely paid off. Even at a higher price point, I am definitely glad to have spent it.     One of the most unique games I have ever played! The amount of times i have repeated the cycle over and over and it never gets repetitive to me at all due to the Random Map Generator. Takes advantage of the PS5 specs to create a very smooth gameplay, even though in the last map section it drops frames due to the insane number of laser puzzles in game. Overall, you have to give this game a try!

    Housemarque took many risks with Returnal, and it is not for everyone. This is a game that inevitable will be compared to others such as the Souls games—as it is uncompromising in its challenge and demands you meet it on its own terms. On a technical level, however, it cannot be mistaken that this game is first class in visuals, sound, and atmosphere. Add in to that mix a clever, twisted,Housemarque took many risks with Returnal, and it is not for everyone. This is a game that inevitable will be compared to others such as the Souls games—as it is uncompromising in its challenge and demands you meet it on its own terms.     Returnal has some of the best gameplay in gaming however the story feels dull at moments and not interesting. With that being said Housemarque delivered on this game and should be very happy with what they did with this game. Looking forward to their next projects.

    I did play it after they implemented a save function, otherwise the game would have been unplayable for me (rest mode aside). Huge positive surprise. The gameplay and the different weapons feel really good. The opponents are challenging but never unfair. To me the story was just really disappointing and confusing.     It's a perfect game for who wants a real challenge. I am glad Sony delivers game likes that Demon's Souls and now Returnal. If you are TPS fan you should definitely play this game.

    Excellent gameplay, good adaption to dualsense, good visuals and particular effects. Definitely worth your time

Sería más comprensible si lo hubieran hecho compatible con 5 consolas a la vez, pero Dios mío, es UNA. 80 euros de precio estándar y dónde está el departamento de QA de este juego? No se le ve.

The xeno-species, the enemies you fight, the environments and the architecture are all so unbelievably interesting just to look at you will feel    This game is amazing.

    The gun play, movement, and graphics are all what you'd expect from a next gen exclusive like this: top notch. What is even more well done is the aesthetic of the game.

    The art-style of this game is simply unmatched. The xeno-species, the enemies you fight, the environments and the architecture are all so unbelievably interesting just to look at you will feel like you're in another place. The bosses. The BOSSES. Amazing set pieces with backdrops of atmospheric music. The boss in biome 3 had both me and my brother with our jaws on the floor at the awesome visuals and tension the game provides. Your body will react viscerally to the challenge - Increased heart rate, adrenaline flowing. This fight or flight response you'll get often in the game leads to truly satisfying victories; something rare in gaming these days. Truly, the bosses are a sight to behold and are among the best boss fights I've played in some time. Specifically from boss 2 and on; it's like watching a fireworks show as you play. Stunning. Most games can only dream of delivering such rewarding highs; many games these days are designed to make you feel powerful and hand you a participation trophy. This game will not give you one - If you expect that, it will knock you on your ass.

    People have been complaining about the difficulty. Yup. It's hard. It requires focus. But, I beat the game the day I got it - Yes, I beat it in about 10 hours. As a first time player, I was able to master the loop and beat it within one day. Some have been stuck in biome 1 for upwards of 20 hours. Your mileage will vary here, and it will be entirely based on your skill. If you love twitchy shooters, or games that require fast reflexes, this is for you. If your speed is more something like Ratchet and Clank (which is amazing in its own way) this game might be frustrating. It's never unfair, but it will demand focus, effort, and paying attention to the tells enemies will give you. You cannot check out and hope to breeze through. You have to play optimally. This is a "hardcore" game through and through. And I wouldn't compare it to Dark Souls either; it's not anything like that, and people who love DS might hate this - I hate DS and loved this game.

    The story, while segmented in telling, is captivating and compelling. I always wondered what was going on, and getting the next piece of the puzzle was always so cool. I actually cared and asked, "What's going on there? Who's that?" Bringing up something like R&C again, I couldn't care less about the story - The dialogue is always cringey, and I'd skip to get to the gameplay. That is not the case here. Every lore bit is tantalizing so that it will motivate you to continue playing to figure out the mystery of Atropos. The world they've created again is incredibly stunning, interesting, and original. Everything here feels so bespoke and effort-filled. The devs hit a homerun aesthetically here - And I can't deny the audio here helping. Guns, enemies, music, all sound perfect and work in harmony.

    I take a point off for the game lacking the refinement you'd expect in the "rogue-like" genre. It's not really a roguelike. It has a lot of metroidvania DNA as well, which I love. But so many of artifacts, consumables, and parasites feel like garbage, and you're just hoping to get what you need. In something like Hades, the game makes sure you have what you need to progress, and then it's on your skill. Sometimes here you'll have the run of gods, and others, you'll get smacked down 5 feet from your ship and there's not much you can do about that. There isn't a LOT of permanent progression. That comes mostly in the way of weapon traits you unlock, which are awesome, but you can't always enjoy because you just might not get the gun, or gun with the traits you want. There's a lot up to chance and the game could use some balance tweaks to make more fun.

    The game might suffer for some without a save feature; I felt it was fine, my game never crashed and my final cycle was only about 2 hours to beat the game. You likely won't lose much progress due to crashes or updates; that being said, they might update it to add a quicksave feature. Didn't feel like I needed it.

    Amazing, amazing game. It will stick with you - For better or for worse. If you have a PS5 and love a hardcore, challenging shooter/bullet hell - Pick this up.    … Expand

    This game is so much fun to play that when you lose against a boss after 2h30 of grinding 3 levels, you do not get upset because you know that the next time you play, the experience will be different.     Love the mini boss fights when the doors are locked or the optional yellow doors and the 3 waves of enemies you have to defeat.

    Do not get discouraged, the beginning is the hardest as you have to learn how to play the game and your weapons get stronger once you start learning new weapon abilities.

    I am at the last boss (I did not have enough healing to beat him, plus I am not the best gamer out there) and cannot wait to see what Housemarque will do on their next PS5 game!

    The biggest con, how it holds your PS5 hostage for 4-5+ hours on a good run, but its almost part of the charm, having so much riding on a single run you play harder and smarter and realise safe isn't always your best bet, sometimes you just have to risk it and get in tbere, pick up that malignent item and gamble the run on chance and when it works and your stats pump and you become a beast its all worth it    … Expand

    This is my first roguelike game I have ever played and yes, it is hard at the beginning but with some practice you will be fine .Atmosphere, sound and graphics are just amazing, gameplay is so addictive.

    Hands down the best game of the year, One that brings me back to when games were challenging but also genuinely fun to play. Glad I waiting for the ability to suspend a run. Because the game challenges you and you want to meet it regardless of the time you've been playing.

    In a world of sloppy and shameless cash grab remakes, and on rails PlayStation narrative driven games void of    Hands down the best game of the year, One that brings me back to when games were challenging but also genuinely fun to play. Glad I waiting for the ability to suspend a run. Because the game challenges you and you want to meet it regardless of the time you've been playing.

Having a save feature would take away from the punishing aspect of the game. The graphics are amazing with no weird glitches or anything. The load times are non existent which is impressive.     Goty for me, this is a game you invest in and get rewarded with great gameplay and some crazy bossfights! The game also chalenges you to pick up upgrades that are life treathening yet so compeling that is why you have to outway the good vs the bad with every run!!

    Really enjoyed this game. Was a bit unsure at first but once I got into it I found it great fun. Platinum trophy wasn't too difficult and am now enjoying the ascension dlc. Great music and fun gameplay. Sounds very difficult on paper but isn't once you get into it and find your own techniques.

    Definitely a blast to play and a showcase to witness. The vibrant colors and exotic looking aliens are on full display and the ps5's SSD is extremely fast throughout the entire game. No loading screens at all, just tons of fun and lots of swear words.

Dynamic 4k is good enough, and it has ray traced shadows reflections and all that fancy stuff. But the textures are ok,not very next get and the particles are insane. I was on a run where I nearly doubled my health and my gear level was 11. I got tired and went to bed. The game updated and my cycle started over. Meaning I lost a lot of my process and had to run the cycle over. While this is frustrating it's still not terrible. The cycle reset needs to be focused on Death only not if the application crashes or updates.    … Expand

    Just incredible. Amazingly fluid gameplay and a mysterious engaging story.
    It can be frustrating at times but you really feel how you're mastering the game more and more with each new cycle.

    If I knew this will be another soul-like game I’d never buy it. Dozens of hours spent for nothing. I’m not a hardcore player, just like enjoying the game. Wish this monsters added some kind of difficulty change possibility. Guys if you care about your mental health don’t buy it.

Unfortunately the story completely fell apart in the finale, but throughout the mystery was great. The only issue is the lack of save system that everyone mentioned, but I’m certain this will be addressed in a patch. With that being said, I can completely understand how this is a game that is not for everyone.

    EDIT: Since they added a save feature, I’m revising my score from a 9 to a 10. Going back through it a second time is really making me appreciate the atmosphere and sound design even more.    … Expand

And this is not a short game, which means that it certainly becomes monotonous at some point. After 20 hours I'm still far away from the ending, but I have the feeling I have seen and played enough.
    The hard difficulty brings another problem: it's not only frustrating, but it also gets really unfair all the time. A lot of death don't feel like they were your fault, more that the randomizer gave you useless items and spawned enemies in the worst way possible. Especially later, there will be enemies that are just infuriating and a chore to fight.

    These are at least for me points that prevent that I give Returnal a higher score. It is sill a great game, but these great aspects come with drawbacks.    … Expand

If you don’t like hard games, play something else. if you take your time and create a good build up during the game (which i know takes some time, but is so addictive!) then its not that hard.     It may seem unreasonable at first, but it is designed so that anyone can clear it if you understand the game system and devise a strategy. It's certainly difficult, but gives you a great gaming experience. I played the roguelike style for the first time, and I was very excited and enthusiastic about it. If you have a PS5, you should buy it definitely.

This game might not be for everyone as in it is like demon's sour dark souls but, there is something rewarding when you do get that good run and beat a boss to make progress.     Eh, looks good. Mechanics are ok. Gameplay hurts more than any souls game in the records. At least in souls games; I can feel the progression and sense of loss when death comes.     I was really excited for this game but after purchasing it on launch day I am very disappointed. The game is visually great but the game play is horrible. Every time you die you start the game over from the beginning, there are few way to refill your health meter, the item and weapon drops are random, and the game environments change every time you die.     A great, challenging game that's beautiful to look at. The difficultly is pitched just right so all bosses are tough at first but get easier after multiple runs as you learn they're attack patterns and weaknesses. A video game as video games should be. Evidently not for everyone though!

    That said, there is are two major negatives holding this game back in comparison to others in the "rogue-like" genre (i.e. Hades, Binding of Issac,    Overall, a very solid experience.     That said, there is are two major negatives holding this game back in comparison to others in the "rogue-like" genre (i.e. Hades, Binding of Issac, etc.) and that is the exceptionally long amount of time you must dedicate to each run to have even a semblance of a chance of defeating a boss, and the lack of any save and suspend feature allowing you to save your progress on a run and close the game to play something else, or to simply turn the console off. As of now, the only way to take a break during a run is to put the PS5 into rest mode, which is a risky proposition for a number of reasons. These two issues work in tandem to hold your PS5 hostage while playing the game and severely hamper an otherwise excellent experience .    … Expand

    Dos semanas antes de salir el juego estaba dudando si comprarlo o no,por que sabía poco de su historia y los vídeos que había visto me gustaba pero como que me faltaba algo....y ya se lo que me faltaba,jugarlo!!!!

    Como rogerlike que es su tipo de juego,no vas a tener puntos de guardado como tal, así que si tienes que dejar una partida a medias y hacer "trampas", puedes dejar la consola en standby.

    Así que a los que estéis dudosos,os gusten los juegos desafiantes pero justos y la ciencia ficción, os animo de verdad a que lo probéis que no os va defraudar de verdad,ha sido todo un descubrimiento para mí.    … Expand

    A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.
