Fantastic game...although I wouldn't recommend it to a casual gamer.

I've always been a fan of souls games (dark souls, demon souls, bloodborne, sekiro etc). and therefore didn't find Returnal TOO challenging, but I think anyone who hasn't played a souls game before will find this extremely difficult..and potentially off-putting if they aren't patient with it. Having said that, the new feature that allows you to save your cycle and turn your PS5 off is very welcomed.

Graphically this game is phenomenal, the boss fights look fantastic although I'd question the difficulty of some of them (I found some of the bosses way too easy).

Only thing that prevents me scoring this above an 8 is the extremely vague story, even after searching online for an explanation of the story and ending, it seems nobody really knows. There's a secret ending which I watched on youtube, and even that explains nothing.

Ultimately, it feels like you're just running round trying to kill the boss and unlock the next area because that's what you're supposed to do...rather than understanding why you are going through these areas, what it all means etc.

Definitely not an easy game, but every run you make you learn a bit more about the terrain, the mechanics, the weapons, and what it requires to turn yourself from the hunted to the hunter. Once you reach that point the game takes on a whole new level of fun. Already receiving one game of the year award, this game definitely deserves it. And with the most recent 2.0 update you can save your progress mid-run to allow switching to a different app or turning off the system without having to start a new run. This was never an issue for me since rest mode worked great and I don’t share my system, but this is great news for anyone holding off on beating the game due to that setback. Thank you Housemarque for one of the most enjoyable (and frustrating but in a good way) games I’ve had the chance to play! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you're a masochist and like a game that sucks all the fun out of you then this is the game for you (especially in biome 3). Arrogant devs with daddy issues who even increased the difficulty of the game in the last 3 updates. "Get gud bro" has no meaning here: if you die = levels are randomized, guns are randomized and items are randomized so its a matter of luck if you're getting good items or not. Yesss update 2.0 has a suspend function but its no save game ! If you die = you start all over again and your previous run was all for nothing
Absolute **** punishing game mechanism with no respect for gamers and a pricetag of 80 dollars

It feels great to play and traversing areas is fluid and fast. The issues lie at the core structure of the game. Death as a mechanic is not new but it's not something anyone can implement without horribly breaking a game completely. Returnal is very inept at this or does it on purpose. At first, dying time and time again feels meaningful, you keep some upgrades, you retain lore entries and also some auxiliary equipment, however you keep nothing that would remotely give you an edge over a failed run. The alt fire should be a stock feature and the atropian blade only helps you uncover rooms with health pickups. Using it on enemies is almost suicidal. Aside from that, all is lost and you're tossed right at the beginning of the game. every death is a full restart. The closed loop is a cool sci fi horror staple but it needs to be built around some passive progression. Returnal only makes it harder and harder for you to advance closer to the goal. After getting all permanent equipment, restarts grow exponentially more challenging, with instances of a dozen of enemies spawning in the very first room, at this point you have a pistol and a glorified grass cutter. You'll begin to die more and more often than before and deaths will lose all meaning very quickly.
No matter how used you are to fighting generic tentacle enemy #5, you can only do so much with basic gear against a horde of them. Some enemies will fold you in 2 good hits, and any human error which happens to the very best players will be severely punished and completely doom a good run.
Health pickups are abundant but do little against waves of enemies that grow more and more in volume as you advance. Bosses are not easy either and pretty much the bulk of failed runs lies at their feet. Dying on the first area is bearable and you can catch up relatively quickly, but dying close to the end is pretty much an insult. The only thing that can put you on the winning path is either finding the most precise and optimal loadout of weapons, health augments and parasites OR endlessly repeat cycles till you pretty much memorize every enemy type pattern to a T.
As a working adult, I don't have that kind of time. If you get the best weapon early on and a rare as **** type of parasite which prevents death, sort of, then you're set for a good portion of the game. The last stretch is a nightmare, no matter how well equipped you are though.
In summation, you need to clear this game in a single run, with no save data, no passive progress, no checkpoints, random weapons with random stats, random parasites, random level enemies and very challenging bosses. Every death drops you right at the beginning with absolutely nothing carrying over besides mundane equipment that only helps open new areas and gives no extra advantage.

TLDR; ever played DOOM 16 on ultra nightmare or Dead Space 2 on Hardcore difficulty? This game is like that. You must know the game and its mechanics by heart and invest ungodly amounts of time on it. It will demand everything from you and give absolutely nothing in return. Not even a good story and/or ending. Avoid.

You start fresh, discovering a really good atmosphere and an intriguing story. The difficulty is high, but the more you play, the more you improve. The problem starts when you get to the second half of the game. You can either restart from the first biome once and again, or go to the third with a gun and a short life bar, and due to a really poor and randomized level design, after the first door huge enemies will destroy you most of the times. It becomes tedious because at that point there is not new learning, nor new abilities unlocked.

Furthermore, the weapons you can unlock at the final stages of the game are worse than the first ones, which doesn't make any sense in my opinion. You probably will end up with a simple gun hoping to get a better weapon that most of the times won't show up. I know that getting that final solar fragment will be only a matter of time, but it could have been a much more pleasant experience, without lowering the difficulty, just with a better level design and a more logic weapon and ability increase through the game.

I know I'll get that final

Even though I don't really like some mechanics and elements of progression, such as not being able to raise character's power in a more constant and controlled way like skill points and such, still I learned to like and go along and I'm so glad I did! And yes, it makes more sense given the game's premise.

I thought that, at a certain point, the game loses the right balance in its challenge and, later on, it happens again, but in reverse. But none of that prevents Returnal of being a masterpiece with a fun and challenging combat!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Returnal is a breath-taking experience made for the PS5. It consists of a very difficult playstyle with only 2 checkpoints throughout the whole entire game.
With a splendid narrative and awesome graphics, this game feels next-generation.
However, the multiplayer sometimes breaks and crashes which could ruin the experience for some.
Extraordinary game and a must-buy in my opinion!

It has features that are quite punishing, meaning that it has no save point and dying lead you to the beginning of the game. Why am I giving it a 7? Well, as it is included in my PS+ subscription, my financial commitment is not as high as other gamers reviewing this game. So I can simply enjoy playing it, treating it like the good old coin op in the old days (which it seems to be emulating a lot), knowing that I will not finish it. In this sense, it is a great download and a must play. Expand

The bulk of the negative reviews on here are invalid because of A) Patches and B) Limited perspective. I'll explain the majority I see.

Complaint: "No save system to pause runs". This has been patched and now runs can be suspended, so that negates a majority of the negative reviews.

Complaint: "There is no progression system". This is completely false. People are just not used to this style of progression. They are used to skill trees, leveling up, etc. The progression in this system doesn't rely on traditional methods. Progression in this game relies on A) Your own skill-based progression (play more, learn more, get better) and B) Unlocking new items, artifacts, parasites, etc. to use on new runs. To say there isn't a progression system is ridiculous. It's just not your typical, boring, overused systems.

Complaint: "It's too difficult". This is also completely false - and plays into one of the game's pitfalls in my opinion. This game is actually too easy. Once you learn and adapt to the playstyle, unlock new items/artifcats/parasites and develop strategies to make an OP build, this game is far from difficult. In my playthrough right to the credits, it took a measly 12hrs of gameplay, I only died 17 times, and only 1 of those deaths was during a boss fight. It's not a hard game - you just need to get better.

As for my quick list of positives and negatives. World and graphics are beautiful. Each biome is just unique enough to keep the player intrigued. Combat is fun as hell. Story is shrouded in mystery and keeps you wondering. Several strategies to building yourself to OP status. Enemy variety is decent (not amazing). Boss designs are wicked.

On the other hand, the game is too easy. Weapons aren't all equal, so I stuck to the same 2 weapons as much as possible to get through the game. I wish this choice wasn't so clearcut and each biome tempted me in some way to use a different weapon. Enemy variety is OK, but for each biome the skins of the enemies change but they feel like the same enemy from the previous biome. Not enough diversity here. And of course, again, this game is just too easy. I was expecting, from the reviews, an extremely difficult game, and it was nowhere near that.

All in all, definitely worth a play. Enjoy the mystery. Enjoy the new style of progression. Enjoy the amazing combat. 8/10

Maybe it's just random, and lucky, but I believe I've seen the map getting easier as my runs have gotten longer. Learning the trade offs of picking things up, and how to maximize chances for success is one of my favorite aspects. Your strategy is worth something here, and that's the way a to make a good rogue-like work.

Two gripes: one, it absolutely would more fun to be able to save a run, than to lose a great one, because you have to leave in the middle. I have no problem starting over when I die, but to be forced to leave in the middle of an extraordinary run, because you have to is terrible. Putting the PS5 in sleep mode doesn't work if someone else wants to use the console before you get back. Second, the regen cut scenes shouldn't need to be skipped. You should have a setting to auto-skip everything except new scenes.

I was excited for this game, and it more than met expectations.

While I love the gameplay and the shooting is fun and frantic, it really feels like a bullet hell shooter at times with all the colorful orbs flying all over the screen at all times. The biggest issue stems from the fact that since this is a rogue style game, you really have to be able to stand the overall lack of progress that can happen from dying to some, frankly, very cheap enemies toward the end of the game. Also, with no save system in place, if you cant do it all in one go, or if you get an update that completely destroys your best run, its very easy to lose all motivation to continue when you lose a 5+ hour run and have to start from the beginning. Doesnt help that the game is very buggy as well here and, as has happened to me as well, you might run into a door that just wont open for no reason that is vital to progress. I already dont really like Rogue style games personally and having all these barriers to keep me from continuing a run doesnt help things at all. It's a shame too because I really like this game and want to continue playing it. Its a testament to how good the gameplay is that I want to continue banging my head against the wall and the story is no slouch either. Its just, as of this writing, there's way too many things technically that can go wrong that could easily ruin a long run that takes me out of the experience completely. I'd recommend holding off on this for a few months for the devs to fix all the bugs holding it back. But I would highly recommend it once that happens. I will definitely be returning to the game as soon as that happens. I really feel like this could be the best post-launch PS5 exclusive this year with how good the combat and story are here. For now, though, I've lost any interest in continuing till that occurs. Expand

The gun selection is minimal and the artifact/parasite selection is fairly barebones with minimal prospects for any broken builds or major synchronizations of items. With only 6 biomes and a roguelite with very low replayability, I'd have a hard time recommending this game at it's current price point. It is, however, a beautiful game with very compelling atmosphere and an intriguing story. The game play is solid, but the decision to make it a full rogue-lite was, in my opinion, a mistake. The RNG factors in so heavily that it is hard to want to run the game over and over. I have played over 20 hours and come close to defeating the first boss but have yet to. This is a game that I may dabble in, but it's absurd decisions in design make it something very less appealing to keep trying. I have enjoyed other difficult games and slowly struggled through because there was always a way to figure it out (ie Sekiro, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, etc.) and progress and eventually complete.

If you love this game, that is wonderful and I am envious. I want to love this game, but it truly feels insurmountable for me and that is a shame. Thankfully I have it in physical format and can trade it in once I finally give up all hope of beating the game and seeing the story play out.

If you are not a twitch reflex player and don't like a game that you have to replay, do yourself a favor and pass this up. If you are great at bullet hells and like rogue-lites then this may be a good purchase for you.

People are upset there is no save function so you can't shut off your system or close returnal and return to it later. Your run will begin again.

The graphics are 1080p upscaled to a 4k image and it is very crisp. It's still one of the best looking 60fps games out there. The dualsense implementation is very well done. The haptics are well done and you feel the rain drops and every obolite you collect. The adaptive triggers are also used very well as they require a half pull of the trigger or a full pull for special shot.

I found the game to be fairly unbalanced near the end game In the final levels or biomes as they call them. You really need the rng to be nice to you as it constantly destroys good runs.

I have beaten the entire game and I am just finishing up my platinum and surveying the biomes.

It took me 30 hours to beat the game. And it will take another 50 hours or so to finish the surveys of the biomes due to poor RNG. Really unfortunate as it's far to random as some rooms simply never spawn so your stuck in hell. Updates should fix this.

The gameplay is amazing and is the real showstopper. It plays amazingly and is so smooth. Some of the best gameplay available on next gen. Another home run for Sony.

A 2-4hr run for a rougelite is really long if you plan to visit every single room you encounter cause that really helps to finish the game.

I'm not usually a fan of roguelike games, but this one is definitely the pinnacle of the genre so far. The learning curve is absolutely terrific and well balanced. The story and atmosphere puts off sci-fi thriller vibes that are almost on par with Ridley Scott movies. There was a strong desire to finish the game just to see how it would end.

I think the balance needs some small tweaks which is why this isn't a perfect score for me. The last level was particularly brutal. The mobs do a bit too much damage and there isn't as many opportunities to obtain the necessary upgrades that will be needed. I also fought with the controls, specifically the triangle button, when I would attempt to pick up an item. It would often using the grappling hook mechanic instead and killed me a couple times as a result.

The lack of a true save option also hinders this game. While I didn't experience any crashes, I did run across a bug that prevents doors from being opened. I was forced to restart the run because of it.

Overall a terrific game and proves why Sony is the dominant player in the console wars.

The shooting in Returnal does feel good and for any long time shooter veteran, the game is not that hard. The difficulty is in time.

The shooting in Returnal does feel good and for any long time shooter veteran, the game is not that hard. The difficulty is in time. Make a mistake and restart and you could lose hours of progress. I am not made of time so O started save scumming using the PS+ cloud saves. I am not sure I needed to. On a second play through to unlock the secret ending, I blazed through the first 3 worlds with 0 deaths. But I get I had too because I didn’t want to spend hours and hours in the same starting area, fighting the same enemies. The secret of Returnal is that the game gets boring.

Returnal added an additional game mode that has you fight for as long as you can in an infinite tower. This fulfills the promise of the game more than the “story” mode, and reminds me of replaying the Lone Wolf level of Halo Reach. In many ways it is like playing Tetris. You just go as long as you can or want to for fun. Again, this will be no problem for veteran shooter fans, and I cleared all 3 bosses in my second run. All in all, Returnal feels like a great AA game but a game of the year. This was a nice title for PS+ Extra.

The story mode needed some limit on how long it will waste a player’s time. I’ve got other things to do and other games to play. Some runs will be blessed with gimme’ pickups and avoidable mini bosses and other runs will be cursed with the worst of everything. The rearangable dungeon is supposed to feel different every time, but aesthetically it does not and the pieces are so limited, all levels look the same. The story mode needs some actual save points, shorter runs, or consistent difficulty between runs. All-in-all, I feel like the industry praise for this game is meant to push the “rogue like” genre and the general sense that playing games is supposed to mean something. Like, if you can beat games like Dark Souls and Returnal, you have really done something. But I am too old and too practical to buy into that fantasy. Games should be fun from start to finish and Returnal is not. Worse, when Returnal is not fun, it is not fun by design.

Challenging but rewarding. Kept me engaged for a long time, and the co-op system works really well.

Lots of fun. Gameplay loop is frenetic, smooth, and not terribly unfair. There are some moments that are few and far between that are a little too difficult (looking at you trap door mini bosses) but overall lots of fun.

Returnl is a 3rd person rogue like game and is by far the most next gen feeling game to have come out.. the moment you start it lets you know theres some magic in this dual sense… I came for the rougue like but stayed for the hand massages from the rain.. its pure magic playing this game, running through its dungeons, collecting new guns as well as artifacts to boost your stats during your run… I love the world, the colors, the lasers.. the way it eels to shoot, the combat, dodging, dashing, jumping shooting.. all of it is masterpiece level… And then theres to bosses.
Im gonna be up front with yall.
    I did not beat returnal.
I love almost everything about this game but I didn’t have it in me to continue playing after 4 hours.
Why? Because the bosses absolutely ruin this game.
As a rogue like, the hook of the game is explore the dungeons, collect what you can, attempt to take down the boss and unlock the next world… if you die along your way you lose almost everything and have to go back in.. rebuild.. come back stronger than last time to try again.. in a rogue like th reward is the boss battle, hades is a great example of rogue like done right.. its exciting to take on the next boss, learn its attack patterns, get a nice build ground and clean house… and the reward for defeating a boss is a new area with new weapons and enemies..rinse and repeat, heres a cool new boss, heres a cool new level to explore… but the bosses her in returnal are absolut garbage… they aren’t “difficult” theyre cheap and annoying.. you feel no progress while fighting them, because it literally feels like youre fighting a sponge… you go from satisfying combat in the rest of the game, to these moments of boring sponges that do nothing cool but waste your time and kill your run… the boss battles are again the reward in these types of games.. this is how you reward me? With enemies that don’t want to die and do nothing but try to cheaply kill you. The bosses ruin returnal. Ive said it probably a million times. Theres a difference between difficult and frustrating. These bosses are frustrating… theyre not enjoyable to take down, theyre not enjoyable to fight.. the yfeel like impossible obstacles in the way of an actual good game…
But If you love punishment and the idea of hitting your head against a spongy wall.. returnals world is breathtaking, its beautiful, its so fun to run thourgh.. so immersive, d one of the coolest experiences on next gen consoles there is.. the bosses just need nerfed.. I want to feel like I got out of there by the skin of my teeth, not that im sure lucky I got a health consumable in one of the rooms… they don’t feel balanced with the rest of the game.. the rest of the game is a fun challenge, the bosses are not.
    I give Returnal
    an 8.5/10

Exceptional game to show off the PS5 and its controller. Controls are incredibly smooth to help with the faster paced gameplay. Sound is top notch. The story is very intriguing and fun for what it is though somewhat too ambiguous at times--tons of mystery though. And graphics are overall, extremely good. May not be quite the best in some areas but the overall physics and details make this world come to life in terrifying ways. But the biggest draw here is the controller.. my God is rumble feedback amazing.. it just feels so good with every detail. adds an immense level of immersion to a game. and the Haptic feedback, though may take a little getting use to, does add an incredible dynamic to gameplay. Only major complaint is the lack of checkpoints. Theres many people that don't understand what a Rogue-like game is and that you're suppose to start over with each death with nearly nothing. But I will say, it would be nice to have had a save feature for runs. Then once you die, that save becomes deleted so you truly start over. But at least you are not forced to play Returnal for a few hours or put your PS5 into Rest mode. Oh and if there was a setting to control the resistance of Alt Fire for haptic feedback, that would have been amazing. I wouldnt mind increasing the resistance by another 5% to 10% more.

My only other complaint would be the $70 price. It is a bit steep. The game could have used a bit more content at the endgame level to help diversify itself. Something other Rogues will accomplish.

Super fun gameplay, really enjoy how massive the maps can be if you want to explore everything..... Only gripe is that the no save option for a long run makes finding enough time for the game difficult

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was disappointed by the ending (of act 2, I googled the remainder). The combat is engaging and challenging to a point, but there is a distinct lack of variety in play styles that ultimately boils down to strafing and shooting for every monster. I think it's the $70 price tag that makes this worse. If this were a $40 title I think it'd be a 10/10. But I expected more content for a full priced title like this.

    Spoiler:
Also it was pretty disappointing to learn that the entire game took place in Selene's head and it made me not really care about exploring and uncovering more about the alien world.

Fantastic rogue like game. If you are looking for a challenging game, then don't miss it. Although it has some issues but, it doesn't mean it's not a great game. Don't miss this game either you are a rogue like fan or not.

Returnal is an example of awfully balanced game, where gamedesigners forgot to learn about "Difficulty curve". Hiding low length and zero content behind "Hardcore".

So maybe I don't "get it" but this clearly isn't a game for me. As a long time gamer with limited time, the last thing I want to do is do things over again. Bold, demanding game that blends rogue-like mechanics with the production values of a blockbuster. While it's been controversial for many the fact that you can't save, once I have finished the game I'm 100% with the devs decision.

A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.

An unobvious reinforcement of PlayStation’s range of exclusives. You can love Returnal, you can hate it, the feelings can even be simultaneous. Even though it’s tough love, there’s something about this game that makes you scream into a pillow and then try again. And again. And again. [07/2021, p.44]
