It's a hard game to look at this. The most unpleasant hero in the history of video gaming. Downgrade from Samus to this. The story is so banalic and simply. There is no ballance in this game. You have many useless items and no healing with boss saving, so enjoy the pain! Save your money and time, don't play it.

I had never experienced like this in games before and its absolutely MASTERPIECE and SONY take a chance and provided to developer everything what they need to make this game. Its very challenging and if you rookie easy going player avoid this game, but if you try to challenge you skill and mechanics welcome on board. I'm about 4-5 hours game play and can't even beat first BOSS. OMG.

Graphics are okay not the best ever but not the worst , Ray tracing on console seems still behind. It has a aliens / promethous atmosphere. GAMEPLAY is rather generic looters shooter stuff and becomes boring fast , enemies are bullet sponges , doesn't do much different than any other rogue likes but is hard-core with no saves and you lose pretty much everything. Some bugs and crashes.

I'm in the 5th area and although the game (about 30 hours) is challenging I'm constantly drawn to it. It's a game you have to be very mindful of your health and you can not go charging into a room full of difficult opponents and make it very far into the game. This game really showes the power of the PS5 and seems to get better and better. It would be a nice touch to have a save feature for progress that would be lost upon death (which wouldn't hurt the games focus on dying and starting over), this would help greatly for the times the game crashed or getting stuck in a glitched spot or even if my wife needs me to run an errand.

I'm looking for the last parts of the game even though I know it's going to be punishing.

However, like many roguelikes, once you've visited the areas there isn't much new to see. The bosses are great fun though I suspect most people will find the game too difficult. The main flaw with the game is the lack of saves, with today's autosave and series x just resuming games this is a huge flaw in what would otherwise be a higher rated game. Unfortunately, the difficulty negatively combines with the lack of saves to make parts of the game boring. If you've played for an hour you don't want to have to repeat all the work just because you're not aware of a new game mechanic that kills you. This was never going to be the game of the year, I did expect it to be more fun after my experience with returnal. The devs should have taken more input from games like hades, incorporated saves and made the game more accessible e.g. TLOU2. Expand

This game presents everything that is wrong with video game industry in 2021. Boring, generic and pointless. What's the target audience here? Who are they making these games for? This game nothing that Rockstar Games have. It's not even Day Gone level. Not even Assassin's Creed or new Doom games. Not even Control level.

It's too hard and dying feels extremely unfair and that's just not acceptable in a game where dying plays a fundamental role in gameplay. I don't care about becoming better by a magnitude of my current skill level and would just like to enjoy the good aspects of the game, like the visual and level design, but there is no difficulty setting to at least let me do that.

I find myself dying because I'm unable to accurately judge the environment behind me and bump into something. You constantly need to jump and dash and you can't aim at the same time, this is annoying with a gamepad, simply a poor design choice. The bullethell-style gameplay requires this and it's just not fully working with a thirdperson perspective, it's janky at best.

The projectiles are bright and the enemies light up, sometimes. Yet many enemies just merge with the background textures and more often than not you can't see them properly. The projectiles also vanish inside dense grass models just to appear suddenly and hit you. The HUD elements and particle effects are so dense that enemies and projectiles get obscured when you're aiming at them. That exponentially increases the difficulty in avoiding anything and you'd think this would be such a simple and obvious thing to not mess up so badly.

The adrenaline effect makes your screen light up red when you kill enemies and the first time I experienced this I thought I took damage - that's just a little detail to illustrate how they messed up basic design choices.

The game is visually stunning and the sound design is good, the vibration functions of the PS5 controller are also well implemented. But the difficulty is needlessly increased by annoying control and gameplay design decisions that I just can't comprehend in the least and sometimes seem objectively wrong.

If dying would feel like it's unquestionably my fault then at least I had myself to blame. But frequently dying because I'm unable to properly see anything or extreme spikes in difficulty just feels cheap. Way too expensive for a game that is so hit and miss. The way it is now I will likely never be good enough to handle the bogus difficulty aspects of the game to finish it.

I'm surprised at the critic score. Apparently the game offered more healing options a few patches ago, that surely would be something I'd have welcomed because there are not nearly enough health pickups around (many of them inaccessible until you unlock some item later on). In fact before reaching the first boss there are never any health pickups nearby but plenty of opportunities to take damage. That just goes to show how the enforced difficulty of this game is far above average.

The story is interesting and I found myself going into each run like it was an old school arcade game! Not been able to save is new to me, it feels different to demon souls but is still punishing and brutal for new players. There is a survival horror element which adds a great atmosphere to the game, coupled with the consequences of dying (losing all, yes ALL your equipment) makes each encounter feel tense and exciting. The controls are great and the game plays exceptionally well, movement is fluid and dodging is your best friend! The camera could do with having a recenter feature but on the whole it works well. Visually you probably won’t see a better game currently. The colours pop against the grim environments and the HDR feature is great. Frame wise it’s great and rarely drops and the level design is truly something to behold. Each time you die the layout is completely different along with the enemy’s that spawn and the gear you can get. If you have a nice amount of time to invest in a beautifully stunning and immersive game this is for you. You will need a few hours per run so casuals this may not be for you! For me I love it and although I haven’t finished it the main gripes of others, no saves etc haven’t bothered me, I love it. Expand

Amazing game, but the lack of any kind of 'save and exit' feature (like in Demon's Souls) really hurts the experience. As soon as you exit the game, it's equivalent to death and having to restart from the beginning. The recommendation to 'put the console into rest mode' just isn't good enough in a AAA title.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer but it still took a couple of attempts to beat the first boss. Now keep in mind, being a rogue-like title, each attempt basically means replaying the game from the start and surviving all the way up to the boss.

The game is harder than Demon's Souls in my opinion and it feels like deaths hurt a lot more in Returnal than they do in Demon's Souls where you often unlock shortcuts to bypass large sections of the map. The game also completely lacks any sort of difficulty setting, so if you don't like difficult games or easily get frustrated, you might want to give this game a pass, but if you don't mind a challenge, this is a really fun game.

Overall I'm giving Returnal an 8 out of 10. It's a polished experience with excellent gameplay. But it's riddled with some annoying mechanics and lacks the bells and whistles you would normally expect to see in a AAA title.

Graphics are okay. but not next gen. It looks worse than Read Dead Redemption 2. gameplay is very bad, you die all the time and hours progress will be gone. Sad game.

While the game looks and plays fantastic the inability to save at certain points brings the game into a boring and repetitive cycle. Unless you have a three hour time slot which let’s face it not many people do these days you will find the game frustrating…

Returnal is gorgeous, compelling, eerie, and truly next gen. But it's also bland, excessively repetitive, and utterly disrespectful of players' time. As a procedurally generated rougelike game, players are entirely at the mercy of what is rolled in the world when they spawn. If you get a bad roll, it just feels like you're wasting your time on a game leading you towards certain death.Returnal is gorgeous, compelling, eerie, and truly next gen. As a procedurally generated rougelike game, players are entirely at the mercy of what is rolled in the world when they spawn. If you get a bad roll, it just feels like you're wasting your time on a game leading you towards certain death.

Case-in-point: I spent an hour and a half exploring every nook and cranny of the world it dropped me into. Every side path, every locked door, every upgrade. The very first time I got to the first boss, I was actually in a very good place with a solid integrity and resistance build and a powerful carbine. But a couple mistimed dodges in the boss' third phase sent me back to the crash site with a new map to explore. I spent another hour exploring this new map but this one had only one integrity upgrade and the only improved weapon was a slightly better side arm. When I got to the boss again, I had no chance; I gave it the old college try but without upgrades I got smoked at phase two.

Now I fully understand this is the whole concept of roguelikes and that's not really my concern. I loved Hades, it was probably my personal Game of the Year when it came out. But Hades sprinkled in things to do between respawning and reaching the boss again. Returnal doesn't offer the same kind of hook. In Hades, navigating through rooms and finding upgrades is a reward unto itself; I always wanted to see what the next rooms had in store. Hades let you carry over gems between runs that you could use to expand your capabilities. In Returnal the 'upgrades' are more akin to what you'd find in a looter shooter -- randomly dropped on the ground or found in random chests -- so there's no sense of accomplishment or progression beyond defeating bosses or finding the (very rare) permanent upgrades. Meanwhile the only currency that transitions between runs is Ether, which, unlike the gems in Hades, has very limited uses. Combined, this makes Returnal feel MUCH more tedious than other popular roguelikes.

It's beautiful, it's atmospheric, I love the story elements, the soundtrack, the overall ambience -- but the core gameplay just doesn't grab me. And knowing that my ENTIRE experience is contingent on randomness sours the experience greatly.

It’s a good solid game . To be honest I’m not the biggest fan of the progression method because it takes way too long to progress if you just want to have fun . It requires a lot of runs and planning to get to the main campaign parts so have to be tactical and play very cleverly to advance .

This could have been an amazing sci-fi, 3rd person shooter, with a great story, a touch of horror and a cool alien rabbit hole to dive into. But no, they had to add "souls like bullsh*t".

Why? It pains me to see how incredible this game could be. But, at least for me, there is SO MUCH stuff against it. First of all, there is no way to save, which means that - on top of the loop mechanic

Why? It pains me to see how incredible this game could be. But, at least for me, there is SO MUCH stuff against it. First of all, there is no way to save, which means that - on top of the loop mechanic - you always have to start from the 1st stage. Even the souls games allow you to save your progress in that sense. Also, most of the upgrades are temporary (apart from some permanent stuff you collect, like tools). This "roguelite" bullsh*t takes away a lot of fun and the sense of progress.

I am trying to like and enjoy this game, but it's just not clicking for me. Also, "the true next-gen game"? No way in hell. The game does use the dualsense features, but there are TONS of PS4 games that look way better (Horizon is a perfect example).

I know my opinions are going to be unpopular, seeing how much praise this game is getting. I hope Housemarque is willing to hear feedback, though. I am sure there are many people who think the same way. This game needs some sort of save feature so we do get a sense of progress. As of right now, I really would not recommend this game to anyone.

Your equipment/weapon upgrades aren't brilliant. I would have probably persevered with this game but my PS5 crashed a while in and I had to start from the beginning. I know this is part of the game loop but it doesn't really respect most people's time. We're not all teenage slackers with entire days on our hands to do what we want with. No bugs either, so if you were thinking about getting this, know that it now works properly. As for the experience itself, this is a highly atmospheric, mysterious, pretty game. The otherworldly, Alien-inspired ambience and creepy narrative kept me going till the end. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is mediocre. There is not enough variety in the level layouts, just rooms that are rearranged in different order, which gets repetitive fast. Also, about half of the weapons and 90% of all "powerups" are completely useless. There's a couple good weapons, and all you need is health and damage resistance. There are no crazy synergy moments like in good roguelikes, almost everything exists to dilute the item pool with trash, and that's like the number 1 cardinal sin in such a game. With such bad design, replayability goes out the window. The initially compelling fragmeneted narrative also ends with a disappointing "non-story", that just leaves everyone speculating. I hate games that do that. Overall, it's a fun enough 20 hours, but it leaves a disappointing aftertaste. Worth checking out on sale. Expand

Really like it. Haven't had any of the issues others have stated so far luckily. I've only gotten to the 2nd Biome but I've been exploring the 1st one looking for a bunch of stuff so I've played hours but I'm not actually that far yet. The gameplay loop is not fun enough for how frustrating the game ends up being. All of your runs come down to luck rather than skill, and the length it takes to get to each objective is far to long for the system, especially with the drip feed of story beats. I would not recommend this game to anyone especially in it’s still flawed and buggy state

But the difficulty of Returnal doesn't come from combat, which is not easy but far from hard. The difficulty comes from the randomness and lack of useful pickups.

I think this game is a solid 7 but I decided to treat it like it treated me, so I went to random.org and selected randomly from 1-10 and that is the score I gave to this game.

As per usual, you can’t have anything without including the idiots. This is an incredible game on so many levels and I had very low expectations jumping in. Don’t let the dumb whiny babies (or idiots again) affect the game for you if you’re contemplating it, the save feature (or lack thereof) is just fine and adds a bit more pressure to each run!

Not bad, not great, it's a fun ride with some original elements and some pretty vanilla ones - in particular in the third act. Liked the pace and lightness of it all. The animation itself too is on point. Pretty amazing what's possible nowadays. The animations inside an animation were pretty original too. The humor never close to edgy, I was never bored, but equally easily forgotten as well.

This game is a masterpiece, & the best game currently on ps5.
The first truly next-gen feeling game.
The graphics are decent without being mind blowing, but gameplay/gunplay are top notch, & the bosses are phenomenal.

It is hard but there is progression, so each run isn't necessarily a waste if you die, but the consequences are still major, so keeps you on your toes.
    Must play game imo.

A competent, but massively overhyped title for PS5 fans to point to when it's brought up that half of PS5 exclusives are remasters or sequels that no one asked for. More normalization of padding and dodgy save systems that will annoy you on the inevitable crash. I doubt anyone who rated it a 10 will even be playing it this summer.

I'll start by saying that I don't really like rogue likes. It doesn't have too many variations in successful builds, it isn't particularly short, and it takes a long time to really get a run going.

So why have I scored it so highly? Well Retural nails pretty much everything else it does, the combat is perfect, Selene moves with such ease and agility that bouncing around avoiding projectiles and firing off return shots is just a pleasure to play from start to finish, and beyond. The bosses are fantastic to behold and final phases are often visual spectacles unto themselves, and the random nature of each room keeps you moving and thinking rather than in games like Dark souls where it is more a learning process of placement and positioning. The story is blended in brilliantly and can leave you scratching your head but when you unravel all the various elements, home segments, logs, and alien cyphers, you have a tale that is more akin to Silent Hill than Aliens. The sound design is impeccable and you feel like you're really in the game as sounds seem to come from their corresponding direction not just a vague to the right, or behind me.

This game will frustrate you, it just will, at some points you will feel the challenge is insurmountable as your best build gets annihilated by some kamikaze missile firing punk, but because it's such a joy to play I was heading back in, after my blood pressure returned to normal, to try again. Sitting at the end having completed all 3 acts feels good in a way that completing games rarely does. It made me work for it.

After you get past the wall of frustration that always accompanies these kinds of games, you will find it was well-worth the journey. This title is a complete success on every level.

The story is conveyed through subtle queues, audio logs, cut scenes, and play sequences that draw you in and let you engage as much, or as little, as you wish. The first act provides a well built sci-fi experience, always leaving the hint that something is amiss. The second act delves into family trauma, cycles of abuse and neglect, and the destruction of real relationships by obsession with the fantastic. The third act provides an excellent resolution. There are many moments that induced chills.

Subtle. Understated. Powerful. That is Selene's story. Many "first games" are stories begging for sequels, this does not, it does not end on a cliff-hanger. Instead, it comes full circle. There will be a sequel because it deserves one, not because it begs for it.

For gameplay, there are a variety of weapons that for the most part, are fun and satisfying to use. There are systems that could be way better-- the proficiency system, in particular, is absolutely horrendous and needs to be rebuilt. But when you do get a good setup and get rolling, the game is incredibly fun. It translates games like Megaman into the 21st century. There are weapons that just do not fit the game, or that were misconceived. But this can be overlooked.

The boss fights are excellent. In particular, the fourth boss is genius. It ties into the story, into the acoustic design of the level, into the sci-fi and personal lore-- it embodies what this game does right.

I bought a PS5 bundle that had this game in it, and at the time, I was unsure whether buying a PS5 was even the right move. However, after playing this game, I am 100% confident-- it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
