    Hard but so enjoyable and fun. Everyone review-bombing just sucks at video games. If Baby Park is your favorite Mario Kart track, this is not the game for you.

    Returnal is cool. It's very, very cool. But it also thinks it's a lot cooler than it is, and that's where difficulties arise. And I'm no stranger to hard games. But with, say, something like the Souls series, you're getting a game that's both less difficult than returnal, and a lot more cool and thoughtfully crafted. Souls games are made up of ever changing and meticulously crafted worldsReturnal is cool. It's very, very cool. But it also thinks it's a lot cooler than it is, and that's where difficulties arise. And I'm no stranger to hard games. But with, say, something like the Souls series, you're getting a game that's both less difficult than returnal, and a lot more cool and thoughtfully crafted. Souls games are made up of ever changing and meticulously crafted worlds full of lore and secrets that beg to be explored. In Returnal you have 12 billion variations on the same 4 rooms. Literally. It gets unbelievably boring with every 2-4 hour slog and you wonder how they got away with ramping up the difficulty so high on a game with so little variety to offer. It's very arcadey. Yet despite this arcadey simplicity, it has the gall to also demand everything and then some from it's players. It demands so much more than something like Dark Souls or even other Rogue likes, yet what you're receiving in return is really a little too simple when you strip away the next gen graphics and haptic feedback.
    So to the creators of Returnal, I say you should be very proud of yourself for making a really cool game. But I also encourage you to find some humility, because it's not THAT cool. Not cool enough to warrant it's teeth shattering frustrations, anyway. Very disappointing.    … Expand

    I'm usually not the roguelike kinda guy, but this game got me HOOKED.

    A truly next gen experience, loving it. The biggest thing for me is not having to repeat the bosses every-time - Seriously, this is huge, and I'm really glad they did it like this!     I get that that's part of the beauty/challenge with for example games like enter the gungeon, but It just keeps me from wanting to jump back in a lot more often.

    The bits and pieces of storytelling are perfectly placed to keep you wanting to look in every corner of every map. I don't know man.. there's litterally nothing I can find that I dont like about it. The difficulty is awesome, the visuals are awesome, the haptics are AWESOME! The eery alien kinda horror mood is awesome!!

    I guess honestly only negative, that has been mentioned more often: can't save mid-run.
    My ps5 is in standby mode while I'm working, after work I kinda HAVE to play this game or lose my progress from last night. Not a deal-breaker but just a little quality of life thingy. ohwell.    … Expand

    Absolutely amazing game, the atmosphere is so well done with the 3d audio tech and the best dualsense features yet, have now made it through to the 3rd Biome and when I die I just keep coming back for more. Super fun and highly addictive with very challenging gameplay.     Returnal is a great display of the power that the PS5 provides. The game itself is brutal yet rewarding journey through 6 areas that are somewhat randomly generated. I like the nature of this rogue-lite, the graphics and boss design are insane and the sound design is superb. For me it is no 10/10 because the permanent progression feels too weak in comparison to genre contenders and theReturnal is a great display of the power that the PS5 provides. For me it is no 10/10 because the permanent progression feels too weak in comparison to genre contenders and the missing auto-save via save and quit is unacceptable. It is not about being able to save, but having to turn off auto-updates and place it into rest mode to persist your game is absolutely off for such an expensive game.

    I am still the opinion that 79€ is too much for this game, although it is a great game that will have you on the hook between 15 to 80 hrs depending on your skill level and whether you want to go for optional stuff. I would definitely recommend this game if you are familiar with fast paced rogue games, shooter and/or bullet-hell games. If this is not your dish then this game will probably drive you nuts. Also I would suggest to get it on a price drop for 10-15%. The game is great but still slightly overpriced in my opinion. Enjoy this great PS5 exclusive!    … Expand

    Después de algo más de 10 horas jugando, puedo decir que es un buen videojuego. Lo compré de salida por 59'99€ y me parece una buena compra.

    El juego plantea un verdadero reto y está enfocado para echarle buenos ratos de por lo menos un par de horas, ya que cada game over nos llevará a empezar desde -prácticamente- el principio del juego una y otra vez.     This game is amazing. This game test your skills. Dont read bad review its only because its too hard for them . Its for hardcore player only . Hardest game i ever play more than souls for me but love it. Only one badside if they can add save only if you not die because sometimes playing 4 hours or more in row its not possible for everybody

    This game was so harder than expected.
    I'm a souls series fan and returnal is different from that but I played in a tence place.
    That experience was good.
    And resource management was very difficult but every choice taking rise or nothing, was fun.

    Thank you for a good game.

First off, no way to suspend the game, NONE whatsoEVER, to explain why this is bad, runs can go on for 3 HOURS only for you to either get bored / exhausted, stop caring and either die or    Dear god what a mess.

    The graphics are absolutely stunning and show what the PS5 can do... that's the only positive thing about this game. Don't be fooled this game, it's an absolute atrocity to play. First off, no way to suspend the game, NONE whatsoEVER, to explain why this is bad, runs can go on for 3 HOURS only for you to either get bored / exhausted, stop caring and either die or kill yourself on purpose, only... there's a problem with that. See, whenever you die in this game you start all over again, and I don't mean just the current segment you're in, no no no, all the way to the beginning (you get to keep perma-upgrades, but those are rare as hell and usually garbage, see for example the melee upgrade is absolutely useless in this game). The game's story is lackluster to call it that, it's bad, unquantifiable bad. You play as this absolute coconut called Selene who after crash landing has absolutely no recollection of anything that is happening on the planet which she either scoured or her clones did (???). You find logs scattered on the planet that were left by none other than yourself or previous itterations of yourself that tell absolutely no story other than look, there's danger and something nonsensical about how the whole planet makes no sense.
    The adrenaline system is also a massive pile of steaming dung, you get a bonus for killing enemies without getting hit which is fine, but they give you a melee bonus at rank 3. Did I mention that melee is useless?? Yea it's still useless at rank 3 adrenaline and to make matters worse the melee hit doesn't snap onto enemies making it really frustrating to use. To make matters worse enemies have a melee attack when you get near them that can quite frankly be easily dodged... but your dodge is on a 2 second cooldown... If you get near a bunch of enemies you're going to get hit no matter what you do and it's going to reset your adrenaline level to 0 which makes you lose ALL the perks you obtained.
    What's driving me nuts is the fact that this game is hard, and it's not Souls like hard, where the difficulty is high but the game is fair, no, this is a game that will screw you over after 1 and a half hours because you couldn't see something stupid coming up.     Housemarque, after years of attempts is still unable to produce something worth your time, avoid this game, it's not even worth it for the people that got it for free on PS+

Sure you get ether that carries over but it caps out at 30 and there isn't enough things to do with it. When runs take hours and you got nothing failed attempts other than "git gud" makes me feel bad, it doesn't make me want to try again.

    In terms of story, what story? It's overly suggestive with no conclusion or closure. Games like dark souls don't spell out the story but they have context clues in the item descriptions and environment. While Returnal has files to read they are mostly not relevant or too vague. And the secret ending which takes a bit to get is point less, adds nothing and explains nothing. A player can't be invested if the story isn't compelling. More cut scenes and more metaphors like how Silent Hill suggests the true nature of things would go a long way

    There is no point to this game which makes me want to never come back. There needs to be payoff with difficult, it has to feel rewarding. The devs here are clearly learning and I hope they iterate in their next game but when Hades exists recently for a fraction of the price, I would rather play that instead of Returnal.    … Expand

And I just can't make it past the first boss. In fact Ican rarely make it to the boss. Played hours and hours and hours (30+) and just can't make it past. I've now given up and moved to other games, but essentially I paid aI'd love this game. It's beautiful, it's exciting. BUT it's just too difficult.     Best Ps5 game to date excluding the remake of DS.

    Housemarque was not a bet really. They know how to make awesome gameplay loops. Fun, frenetic and challenging. Just like all housemarque games. Kudos for making something of this scale though.

    Game is awesome, but is not for everyone. yes you die and return to your ship, but the game is still progressing. In fact you need to keep dying to be ready for the bosses and level up your character, as crazy as that sounds. The atmosphere has a real Prometheus (Ridley Scott) vibe, the game play is superb. housemarque really did their thing here.

Yes, the game is an awesome showcase for PS5 features, the framerate is incredibly smooth, but above all, the gameplay is FUN and ADDICTING.
    There is a learning curve to the game, and above average difficulty, but the process is    I was on the fence whether I should buy it on release or not, and I can say that after I am done with the game, Returnal has become one of my lifetime top games. Yes, the game is an awesome showcase for PS5 features, the framerate is incredibly smooth, but above all, the gameplay is FUN and ADDICTING.
    There is a learning curve to the game, and above average difficulty, but the process is fun! It doesnt feel repetitive, and each time you die, you take as a learning lesson and you just want more! It is like you are sucked in an endless loop with Selene, you always want to play more and more. The game makes excellent usage of dual sense, the 3d audio is amazing for the immersion and the game makes smart use of audio to be part of your gameplay. What I mean is, there is a special shot that you can use, and instead of using a visual UI to show you when the special shot is ready to be used again, there is an audio cue to tell you its ready.

    For those worried about save points and time constraints to play this game, until you finish the game your runs will last at BEST 1 hr. Post game, when you are already good with all upgrades, then yes, your runs could last 1-2hrs. At least I consider myself an average/not very skilled player, I would die much faster than that, I was able to have fun in attempts/runs that would last between 20/30min. And by no means dying necessarily means you made no progress at all, each time you return you may encounter new story pieces revealed to you, and a few items in the game are permanent and stay with you even if you die. Weapon trait upgrades are also permanent. You dont need to defeat any boss more than once, and once you defeat a level boss, there are permanent shortcuts that quickly take you to the latest level you were.
    If you have the opportunity, I strongly suggest playing this game.

    For reference I usually play RPG's and JRPG's, and some games like uncharted, last of us, god of war, and hate soulsborne games.    … Expand

The reason this game is a 9 and not a 10 for me. is because it needs an auto save feature that let's you turn off the console and continue where you left off.     This game is a very interesting challenge, I haven't had any since I played sekiro on PS4, the graphics look great and runs at 60 fps pretty much all the time, looking forward to a sequel.

    8.6/10 - Say what you will about the lack of saving and not having items or weapons carry over during sequences. Those are valid hiccups that possible hold the game back for some including myself at times but nevertheless Returnal for me was a very good game! I thoroughly enjoyed my one with it but certainly felt frustrated during other times but they were not frequent.

    Game is great, gameplay was great, story was weird in a good way, some alien and interstellar vibes. Roguelike sou expect it to be punishing. After finishing all the biomes the story is not over, you still find logs and cutscenes to the story. Well for me atleast i’ve seen 2 after the credits rolled. Maybe there’s another ending. Still having a blast.

    It took me around 23 hours to fully beat the game, and I have to say: it is very difficult. The difficulty didn’t feel unfair and as a soulsborne fan, it was very welcoming. I liked the world of Atropos a lot, the visuals were good, but not too next-gen feeling. Overall, I highly recommend this game. Even if you don’t like the steep 70 dollar price tag, you should try buying it on sale.

    Returnal is an excellent rougelike, phycological horror that really showcases the PS5's SSD and Duelsense capabilities. Housemarque have proved they are a formidable studio with their first AAA title and I can't wait to see what they make next.

    Yes it's challenging and yes the lack of the save feature is an oversight but this is one of Sony's best new IPs in years. The world is fantastic. The gameplay is super addictive and controls are smooth as butter. The story (so far) is spooky as hell. I'll be dumping many hours into this.

    However, some serious issues need to be ironed out before it can be called a great game.
    Random laser turrets shooting my character through trees and world objects or occasional overlapping waves of simultaneous enemy attacks that make zero safe doge space can be tough but fair.
    Having the game crash on you losing 6-7 hours of your hard-earned progress however is not. There is absolutely nothing enjoyable about that or healing items(that you are hugely reliant on) spawn inside a world object(like a tree) or the challenge room not opening after defeating all enemies leaving you not only without any rewards to complete it but also stranded and forced to restart, again losing all your headway.
    Since every time you are back at square 1 with zero upgrades( except some traversal items you earn after bosses) and because of their RNG nature, it can be more than a little frustrating, to say the least.
    The game is original in its own right and really didn't have to try and outdo Souls Sekiro Nioh and Fallen Order, all of which(probably because they like to spoil players for choice) include the simple quality of life courtesy of progress saving and/or difficulty selection.
    Since the closest you come to a save mechanics is putting your console on standby, which might include several days and hours of dedication, you can only pray you don't blow a fuse (literally and proverbially since apps don't run simultaneously) when your kid wants to use the console for something else or wife decides to watch Netflix on it instead.
    You can see where the whole roguelike logic falls flat. Sadly recent patches have been breaking more than they fix. Network play hasn't worked for me once regardless of the version.
    From experiencing zero bugs or crashes on day one to cluster-#$&k after patches 1.33, including removing what little extra possibility of healing there was on stage one to get a leg-up after a failed or crashed run. (coincidentally this feature was left in for when the reviewers rated the game prior to release)...
    Effectively making it next to impossible to play for a casual Sci-sci lover with a family life like myself.
    Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to like, and even love about Returnal, it's just that some of its choices will be a hit and gather high praise for its originality for some while being a definite miss for others.
    There are great roguelikes out there that make you feel more powerful with each run and despite having to traverse the world again making it a new and refreshing experience. This title fails to deliver on that front after a certain number of deaths. In fact, certain items you unlock closer toward the end game feel like a big step back/are progressively weaker than a lot of the early unlocks.
    The weapons grossly lack balance some (3 specific ones) being A tier with correct perks (again random rolls) and offering a shoot and forget advantage, while others having little damage in comparison or requiring very precise aiming(not easy when you have to dodge incoming attacks all the time )to make them remotely worthwhile.
    Much like the weapons, 70% of which will be throwaways the unlockable weapon perks and augments have a similarly abysmal difference in utility. Some being godlike (heal on kill chain, increased damage overtime etc) and others( high calibre, stun resistance, which you might need 1% of the game if at all) literally being dog$%t with no ground in between.
    This means that your success will not be dependant as much on your skill and knowledge of enemies and how to counter them but how the rng dice roll in or against your favour, making the lure to continue akin to gambling which can be inherently disagreeable.
    There will be runs when you feel like you are at the mercy of the malignant Cthulhu rng gods themselves.
    All this makes little space for build variety and replay value. To be clear I completed the game(after 45 hours and 25 deaths) and then beaten the whole campaign a second time to get the secret ending, when close to the finish I got stuck on doors not opening and decided the game just does not want me to have more fun. At which point I really did not have any desire to start everything from scratch just to have it all erased again because of a glitch,
    While there is fun to be had, buying an €80 AAA title from Sony's stable, you really shouldn't have to expect to become a beta tester, so perhaps just wait until alll the bugs are all fixed.    … Expand

The dark mysterious planet of Atropos is a brilliant setting and the unique alien lifeforms pose an incredible challenge. Housemarque turns a bullet hell arcade shooter and gave it a brilliant fleshed out story. Highly recommend this incredible game despiteA brilliant take on a genre I dont often play.     Incredible game, demanding and satisfying, sometimes frustrating, it's an incredible and intense experience.

    It felt like a soul-like experience, it's the first rogue-lite I played that much and to the end.

    If you like this kind of games don't skip it!

    Es un juego oscuro con apenas detalles. No es next gen como lo prometió Sony. Usa trucos como neblina, oscuridad y luces para tapar que va a 1080p. En lo jugable el personaje es errático y la cámara no se posiciona bien. No lo recomiendo

    A challenging game with a lot of fun mechanics. You gradually learn how to get better. I enjoyed my first hours in the game. But now I have experienced my fifth crash. Almost all crashes happened when I was getting close to finishing a quest / biome. Challenging gameplay is fun.     The fact that this game hard crashes is bad enough but the fact that there is no real auto save makes it a disaster. Losing around 8 hours of progress. I doubt they'll bother to make the call to fix the save issues people are having.

    Nothing like losing 30+ hours of gameplay because of a bad patch by the developers. It was already bad enough having to deal with a few glitches killing a few of my runs but this is totally unacceptable. WASTE of $70.

    This game amazes me every time I play it. Excellent graphic and sound sector. Particle effects are very beautiful. The gameplay is very fluid, fast and adrenaline-pumping. I hope Housemarque will continue to support Returnal with new updates and new activities to do. Good job

    I’m not normally a fan of roguelikes, but I’m hooked on this game. 15 hours in and I just keep thinking about my next run. The game is hard, but once you make a plan and find a weapon that you like it becomes easier.

    Addictive, difficult but worth buy! You'll die a lot but every new game will be unique, thats the best part of the gameplay. I miss checkpoints or autosaves but it's the magic of this game.

The story is intriguing, the visuals are sublime and the gameplay is very fun. It's a spiritual successor of games like Metroid Prime, also its inspired by movies like Alien, Edge of Tomorrow (which actually comes from a Japanese novel called AllReturnal is a challenge for real gamers! And a very satisfying one. Housemarque is specialist for this kind of games that test your abilities. The story is intriguing, the visuals are sublime and the gameplay is very fun. It's a spiritual successor of games like Metroid Prime, also its inspired by movies like Alien, Edge of Tomorrow (which actually comes from a Japanese novel called All you need is kill), Interstellar and even The Arrival. Its also one of the games that best uses the capabilities of the DualSense, demonstrating their great future and that haptic functionalities will become a standard. The game has worth every penny and as I mentioned its a challenge that every real gamer should face. There will be no regrets… Expand

    A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.
