    It didn't take me long to realise how special Octopath Traveler 2 is. It is a game that has so much to do and explore, but never feels overwhelming or watered down in any way. Featuring one of the best turn-based combat systems I've ever encountered, alongside an emotional and deeply connecting narrative on all fronts, Octopath Traveler 2 is truly a monumental achievement that confidently stands among some of the genre's finest entries.

    By strengthening the writing and characters, Square Enix has brought every other aspect of Octopath Traveler snapping into focus with this second entry. Beautiful, engaging, and challenging, Octopath Traveler feels like a classic JRPG, in all the best ways. This is a huge, and hugely rewarding, game.

Part of originality is gone, but new elements are reliving good formula for veterans and new players too.

    Octopath Traveler II plays it safe when it comes to its core gameplay, offering a handful of small positive tweaks that don’t entirely make up for returning problems like clumsy party management and battles that take too long to wrap up. Thankfully, the game also takes a big, confident step forward in writing, offering a cast of well-wrought, interesting characters and a vividly-detailed world you won’t soon forget. Octopath Traveler II may have the same old engine under the hood, but the road trip it takes you on is well worth experiencing.

The turn based combat is one of the best out there, combined with an amazing job system that gives a lot of depth. Random encounters are fast and fun, while bosses need tactics and can be challenging. The break system, attacking enemies with their weaknesses to leave them open for more damage when broken, is a great tactical feature. At no point of the game I needed to grind (except optional super boss).

    Characters and stories are absolute peak. All 8 travelers are so different, offer so many aspects and each story is at least great. The best ones are absolutely phenomenal, while even the weakest character arc is still good.

    The music is one of the best Soundtracks ever. Each character theme fits so well and grows on you while experiencing their stories.

    It also feels way more like you are in an actual party now, due to the combined chapters plus the final chapter which combines everyones story. This was missing in the first one and is totally nailing it in the 2nd one.

    The only issue I can see are the first chapters. Most players will collect all characters first, most players will play all first chapters to get the proper character introduction, which can lead to the feeling of playing the tutorial 8x in total. But overall, it is one of the best JRPGs ever created.    … Expand
