It's unlocked halfway through the DLC and can also be used on the mainland. Additionally, a new weapon class has been implemented, and only consists of the Spectre Gauntlet.     A masterpiece (Dunkey's Voice). Loved it so much. The graphics are out of the world and it adds to the already amazing story from the previous entries.

    An excellent dlc! It brings new enemies weapons armors skills that make fresh even the main game. Guerilla does the best graphics and give us so much freedom for the gameplay

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The DLC was really short, and entire chunks of the map are just... empty. Nothing to do and totally pointless. The boss battle was pretty stale and predictable, too. I'm not sure where people are getting the idea from that it was cool.

    Putting aside any sentiment about representation, the "romance" option came out of nowhere and was very poorly written. Basically, the protagonist inexplicably and IMMEDIATELY falls for a character (although they don't express this to each other until the end) who is essentially a copy of her, which seems pretty narcissistic.

    The new character is also pretty boring; you know how every buddy cop movie has both characters be exact copies of each other? And you know how that makes for SUCH an interesting dynamic? Except wait, they don't do that... because it's BORING.

    Aloy has an actual, literal clone in the game who is less of a copy of her than Seyka (the new character) is. Characters need to be different and varied to create fun and interesting dynamics to explore. Seyka is not that. Her gender is irrelevant.

    I bought a PS5 for the ONLY reason of being able to play this DLC, and I'm honestly going to return it. This was a waste of my time and money.    … Expand

    Unfortunately, the negative reviews have nothing to do with the quality of this DLC. Burning Shores is one of, if not the best, DLC I've played. Burning Shores offers a real next-gen experience. The graphics look CGI-like, the story is excellent (adding a better conclusion to Forbidden West and humanizing Aloy more), the gameplay is fun, and the new map section is a fantastic add-on with much more verticality to the world design. Burning Shores is an excellent add-on to an already great game. However, there are some minor flaws here and there, such as Aloy getting knocked down easily in fights, a shallow melee system, collision-detection issues with objects, etc., but these are easy to look past. If you've finished Horizon Forbidden West, I consider this a must-play experience.    … Expand

    The combat is the same from the base game, which is great, but has incremental new abilities and mechanics (also new incredible machines to fight)
    Soundtrack keeps awesome, giving the perfect tone whether on combat, exploring or on story moments Story was amazing, even being a little short, we got to know much more about the Quen, more Zenith    Best in game graphics ever seen. Period.

    Excellent DLC ! This new character of Seyka is very endearing. The fights are still as epic, new machines, new skills, an unexpected end, but it's always a pleasure to play Horizon. I recommend if you liked HFW

    If woke means that I believe everyone is equal and should be treated as such, then I'm happy to be woke. This is a video game. Who cares if she's bi, gay, straight. The game is incredible, the graphics are beautiful, for $20 this is more than worth it, and I'm glad I have the ability to enjoy something for what it is rather than be obsessed with the word 'woke'. Well done devs.

Not to mention with some random girl we have zero connection to! Every flirting scene between them is unbearably cringey and awkward. Idc that Aloy is gay, but at least make her gay with someone we CARE ABOUT! What about Alva or Zo? At least we have a connection to Alva and Zo and they actually serve important stuff to the main story! We have no connection to Seyka and she serves next to no importance in the dlc. And why didn’t we contact Alva at all during the dlc!? She is part of the Quen so what the hell?! Thsi dlc threw commons ense out the window and was made to cater towards a totally different audience. No surprising the dlc is getting negativity. And personally it’s a 0/10. Talanah who she bonds with since zero dawn is hundreds time better, there's also petra, beta, alva, even regalla would probably be better, that's how forced seyka is, other thant that, main villan is basically "Big company capitalism bosses all bad, came back do bad things, defeated" repeated again, no more words can say.

    Conclusion, platinum both ZD and FW, left very dissapointed, for the future third installment, I'll wait for sony to put it free than maybe given a try.    … Expand

    Not enough interesting NPC’s or side quests and everything is rather samey. There is one big set piece which may have seemed cool on paper, but it just doesn’t work. If Aloy is gay, no one cares, but why does every couple in Forbidden West and Burning Shores gay? Its the end of the world, but how did the population continue? Exactly.     For me, Horizon is Aloy's story first and a gorgeous game second. A deep personal tale about an orphaned girl rising to save the world. So I am very invested into her character. After original indications by the writers that Aloy was 'too busy saving the world' to have a romantic interest, she now apparently has time for romance as an LGBTQ character. While this may satisfy a segment of the gaming population and be indifferent to another, it strongly alienates another segment of the player base who have seen her as a straight woman. She also had interest in male characters as she did not shut down Avad's approaches and instead also delayed them to be addressed in the future.

    I sincerely hope that Guerrilla games has respect for gamers that differ with this profound character narrative and provide a choice for Aloy to chose building a relationship with a male character in HZ 3.
    The Witcher series did a marvelous job of this in the Triss / Yennifer choice and there is no reason not to allow player agency in this aspect of Aloy's story.    … Expand

If you would try to create a damn relationship that would go from the very beginning of the franchise or at least beginning of second game, we would understand.     You gave the responsible role of plot writting to a young and inexperienced, talentless writer who nearly ruined the entire franchise. A character like Aloy cant have such an abomination by her side.
    BOYCOTT AND do NOT buy this DLC.

    Frozen Wilds was 100000 tomes better!

    I saw it coming from Horizon Forbidden West after playing it. I knew they'd go there, LOL. The world building deserves some credit but the story is the weakest part of the entire franchise. And it would of been better if it was a male character, Aloy is annoying and naggy.     At this point it feels that the devs (like Bioware) ran out of anything worthwhile to put.
    I am sad and disappointed because after the original game I had high hopes for this one, but it's just a reskin.

Unrealistic dialogues, cheap drama straight out of a morining teen show. The main antagonist is stupidly comic his actions are too stupid and exaggerated.     the story in this DLC is atrociously bad! it has ruined an entire franchise and a once beloved character in the short 4 hours it lasts - which is the only good aspect about it.

    do not buy, and I would implore you to stay away from future installments of this excuse-franchise to push a political agenda.

    I was in love with the Horizon Series, and after Forbidden West it was about to be my all-time favorite game, but that Burning Shores ending was so disappointing. It ruined the story for me. It was horribly written and obviously thrown in for American political reasons. It's such a shame this keeps happening.

    I'm part of the lgbtq community, and even I was starting to feel weird about how there are very few honorable male characters, and how there are so many lesbian characters. So, many side quests had lesbian characters. It's not even representational of life.
    Then the ending seriously threw me off, cause it just felt so out of place. There was no real story development for that love scene in the end. It seriously felt like they just threw it in to make 'woke' quota deadlines. if the 'woke' crap was just better written it would be so much more accepted, but at this point, it's really becoming a problem in ruining the art of storytelling.     The DLC is everything I wanted: more story, great new and returning characters, stunning setting, fun new skills, and new awesome looking weapons and armour. This DLC was the perfect excuse to revisit Forbidden West (even if I forgot most of the controls and died a few times while I got back into the groove), and I enjoyed every second of it. Highly recommended!

    First game was one of my favorite games of all times. Amazing story, amazing gameplay, amazing and emotional ending. I finished every little quest in it.
    Second one became more preachy, the story became a literally version of Marvel and Aloy's character became way less of likable rebel and instead became an arrogant saviorist, over opinionated and hands down annoying .

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The weakest Horizon game/addition to date. The world of Burning Shores, which is meant to be post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, is bland and (except for the excellently modeled) lava flows, it is frankly boring and doesn't feel much different to post-apocalyptic San Francisco. The Hollywood sign only gets a passing mention. The new machines offer little dynamic gameplay (the mosquitoes are frankly just annoying), the waterwing is just a gimmick. Unfortunately, the new land mass also doesn't directly add the main landmass. It is also a small world with a lot of open water and only some islands, which don't offer any tallnecks.

    Gameplay itself never manages to capture the player. The storyline is generic, the villain is generic, and overall, the narratives seem like we've seen them before in the Horizon world, and not just once. Aloy meets a random Quen woman called Seyka who, being an outsider, has a similar background to herself - a storyline that has already been explored with at least Beta and Talanah - and is tasked with the most straightforward unimaginative quests ever - save the world with her, this time from nuclear poisoning, by stopping the eccentric last surviving Zenith guy (who doesn't get much of a character either) from escaping with his space shuttle.

    The new weapons offer little excitement - even the Zenith weapon - and the search for Brimglow is boring and exhausting. While Frozen Wilds hat a clever way of explaining why Bluegleam is what and where it is, Brimglow just sits there and never gets any kind of background.

    The OG Horizon characters play no role at all, as we are only forced into mainly interacting with Seyka - a shame mainly with regards to Beta, who is finally free from the Zeniths and now just somehow sits at home, even though Aloy keeps referencing how important she is to her. It is here where we get to the most controversial point, the Seyka romance. This would always be controversial, because some people straight up dislike LGBTQ+, and even more people probably dislike the fact that this topic is presented to them over and over again in games. Others might not like it because people were comfortable with Aloy being asexual, a sexual orientation that gets little exposure overall. Others may dislike it because they had hopes for Erend, Talanah, or other people. Others dislike it because the lesbian/gay character arc is already old news to Horizon players, with both Tilda and Elizabeth Sobeck (and also Petra Forgewoman, Brageld and Janeva) being openly gay - Tilda even being openly gay towards Aloy, which Aloy didn't tap into (in the main game).

    I dislike it because it is completely out of character and also misplaced such a short DLC. If Aloy needs a romance storyline (imo she doesn't), it should be put in the third main game, and here, with options that are more viable and deep. Players are humans, and most people I talked to have explained that Aloy and Seyka just don't vibe together. Aloy behaves like a teenager at some points (something she never does) over a character she's barely done one mission with and barely had any time to bond. How the Seyka thing will play into Horizon III also remains a mystery - especially for players who didn't buy the DLC. It kinda cuts off other romance options.

    The pricing is probably a bit too high as well, Horizon players may still want this, but buy it when it's on sale.    … Expand

    My favourite sharpshot bows from Zero Dawn became useless and crafting arrows is now a time-consuming and expensive process, and the low inventory capacity for arrow resources is a significant issue for me to receive nice and dynamic adventure.
    The rarity system in the game is lacking, with orange chests often containing expensive trash instead of rare ones. Developers must improve the system.
    Despite introducing new characters, the game developers have not done enough to bring in new machines, resulting in the game's new machines being subpar.
    Looks loke Metacritic is accused of removing or editing posts. Such unethical practices need to be eradicated from the gaming industry and fully missmatched with freedom of reviews and comments
    Side quests looks boaring and archievements are very casual, and not so hard to get Platinum.
    Only for PS5 - so if your have PS4, you need to buy a new console or ask it from your friends.
    Nothing special in DLC for a such price, I think this DLC should be free for Forbidden West owners

    Also cancelled my PS Plus subscription, bacause don't want to be a sponsore of this game types in future.    … Expand

    There’s just not enough content for the price. The new ‘good’ character is lame and boring. All the new male characters are jerks. The main quest can be completed in a short few hours. Combat is the same. I think I’ll skip the third game.

    Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is visually the best game I have ever played, and in terms of gameplay, it is enjoyable for me, although it may not be for everyone. But the story is the biggest weakness of the game, and I don’t think the story will be great in Someone’s opinion and it may just be the difference between those who say it’s mid and those who say it’s bad. But in different ways, this game completely shows off the power of the 9th generation console.

    Burning Shores is definitely worth a visit. The story builds nicely, the side quests have nice depth, and Aloy and Seyka may end up forming something more than just a friendship. The question is whether a little more content could have been added. After all, it's all stuff we've seen before. [Issue#327]
