I watched some reviews for GT7 before it released and was excited to play the game. During this review period no details on microtransactions were shown. The game is released and microtransactions are displayed. This would be acceptable IF they provided reviewers with the microtransaction model before release. THIS IS A DISGUSTING PRACTICE and should not be considered common practice by consumers. They clearly delayed microtransactions to get positive reviews. I also feel reviewers have a responsibility to update their reviews or do a follow up when such substantial changes are made. On top of this when they realize people are finding a way to make grinding for credits at least somewhat bearable, they release an update to reduce the amount of credits you can earn in almost every race. The downfalls of an always online single player model have been shown in full force with nearly 24 hours of downtime for server maintenance. I can forgive some of the bugs but when you have ill intentions with your extremely loyal fanbase, and treat them like cash cows, that is something I can't forgive.

Some of this is my fault too. I bought this game without hesitation because of my enjoyment of past Polyphony Digital releases. But now I know that every developer's integrity is for sale. This has been a learning experience for me. DO NOT PRE ORDER GAMES. Wait a couple months before you purchase a game. VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET and the industry will change.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pay to win and grinding required for most late game cars, missing much in the way of progression and career mode. Missing ability to sell used cars and buy car upgrades (they have to be won with tickets...) No endurance races for late game cars. Required online only, if the servers have an update day bye to the game and any add ons you bought also you won't be able to get a refund, might be less of an issue if you can buy the disk version. Also there is an unskippable 10 minute intro credits scene. Game itself is good but it's trying so hard to not let you actually do racing you have to listen to a million interrupting texts that ruin any immersion. It's too bad that this could have been an extremely impressive game but it ended up being another over hyped game that under delivers. Expand

The gaming industry seems to be changing for the worse, it’s embrace of new technology has been used to create better gaming experience but also as a mechanism for padding the already hefty wallets of the industry executives.

How i miss the simple days of when games didn’t connect to the internet and they had to be playable from day one. It’s a shame that all of the hard work from the developers, artists and productions can be thrown down the toilet by a few soulless individuals, bottom lines are truly dreadful.

Well, we're here, how did we get here? Today PD released an update that nerfed pay outs for some events, why? To answer that I'd like to explain a bit how this game presents itself to the player.

    - - - - - - -

The problem with Gran Turismo 7 is GaaS, or Games as a Service, what it basically entails is cutting off half or more of the final game content to release via 'free' updates, updates which will have content that gradually increases in price/value as it is released, games that feature a lot of grinding are prime targets to be converted to this system and it is a plague among the gaming industry as it makes you choose between time and money, that IMO does not make a game a 'game' anymore but something meant to fleece you as much as it can.

The only GT games I've played are GT3/GT5/GTS, I can tell you that the initial grind in GT7 is much more forgiving than in GT3, (can't say much for the others as I didn't really play them much) I made $1m Cr. in 5 days, that same feat took me months in GT3, however this is at this moment in the game, the GaaS system itself features continuing 'free' updates (update is "Free" content is not) which will introduce cars that are inevitably better, cooler and have more features than the base cars in the game and Polyphony will MAKE you want those cars, because if you don't get them, you'll start losing races, you'll start to be pestered with all sorts of ads that show you cars only in the new updates then you will have to make the inevitable question:

Is grinding for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week for 2 weeks, worth less for me than the $40 it takes to buy that shiny new car right now with microtransactions?

And you'll most likely answer, no.

And then it will most likely happen again with the next update, gradually increasing in credit price, then when you least expect it, you will be paying so that you don't have to play the game, GaaS inherently gives you an extreme goal and begs you for money to make it easier (this is why you CAN'T sell cars), it is insidious and is destroying my love for gaming, it inserts itself in the most forced ways in games for the sole reason of making a quick buck off of you and it IS working, only way to stop it is to stop buying games that peddle it, publicly call out the publishers and developers that insert it into their game that previously did not need it at all.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for GaaS, worst thing about it is that you don't even own a license to use the content you buy, you don't have any rights to the fake money you pay real money for, if they shut off the servers they can legally do so without providing any kind of restitution or any kind of reward for time/money lost.

GaaS takes your time, your money and your rights away.

Forgot to mention, all GaaS games in one way or the other feature cheap psychological tactics that ensure you get hooked to the game and always come back for more, which does this game use? The skinner box or Operant Conditioning Chamber:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning_chamber

What this usually amounts to is adding RNG elements to the game, Yep, you guessed it right, the Star Tickets, they give the illusion of being fully random and that you have a one in five chance of something but in reality the Tickets are fake, What you will get from it is already decided by the game, probably long before you get the ticket, want to test this out? Claim a ticket and as soon as you get the thing, close the game and try again, you will ALWAYS get the same thing, no matter how many times you try.

Additionally some games go even further pick from a pre-selected list of rewards to give you depending on how good you are doing in the game or how specific your gameplay has been going compared to secret parameters, most likely refined and extracted from all of the metadata they get from everyone collectively playing the game, all of this effort, all of this is done for only one reason, to fleece you for content and make you pay at every turn, is is the most anti-consumer thing you can implement in your game short of actually taking money and being legally allowed to not give you anything at all, which is unironically called 'Gambling'.

This is a problem that the gaming industry inherited from the mobile game industry, IMO if developers and publishers want to make games that change the core mechanics to something that better fits GaaS then they should release those games on mobile systems where anti-consumer tactics are accepted and applauded.

    * very less event in campaign mode. Cafe mode is garbage. (I completed in one day)
    * very less track. Without city track.

    - Can't play the game without network, even the single player campaign mode.
    * This is not reasonable!!! If you close the server in the future. I can't play anything!!! I paid for a full game!!! OK??

    - Serious imbalance between expenditure and reward
    * PD still decrease the reward

    - Bad roulette system
    * some modification parts / cars can only be get from roulette. That mean I need to buy / modify a car by luck??

    - Bad AI.
    * The AI is not trying the overtake. It just want to hit / crash your car

    - Bad balance for the performance point
    * Even I modified the car to the maximum PP for the race requirement. The performance still have big different with other cars. That mean the have to play by luck. you will never know which car is the fastest one on a specific PP limit.

Due to maintenance. Some invitations from the car dealership have expired.
PD no compensation at all. What they replied for that???
    - to avoid a situation where a player must mechanically keep replaying certain events over and over again?????
    * Are you joking to me? The campaign mode's event is the least one in GT series. I have completed all events already. But still not enough money to buy / modify the cars. How can I "avoid keep replaying certain events over and over again"???
So, your action is decrease the reward to avoid.....??
You decrease the reward make me more an more keep replaying certain events over and over again!!!
If you really want to fix this. You have to update with the new tracks, new events to "avoid us keep replaying certain events." Instead of decrease the reward!!! OK??

    - Car price linked with the real world prices??
    * Why don't you adjust the price as same as the real car? 450,000 USD to buy the Cr.. Then you can buy the Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster in GT7. Sounds Good??
    !!!!PD, It just a game!!!!

This is a console game, not mobile game. Not "Pay to win". Don't destroy the GT series, PLEASE!!!

This guy Yamauchi says "they don't want people have to drive one race again and again to gain credits..." and hen they slice the reward so u have to drive it even more. Is this some kind of haiku?

Polyphony Digital and Sony's decision to deliberately mislead the public by introducing extreme credit reward limitations following a patch released 1 week after the original release reviews is a slap in the face at best and possibly criminally misleading at worst. Not what I would come to expect from a respectable developer and platform as PD and Sony.

The campaign is abysmal and anything resembling an actual endurance race is gone. Endurance races no consist of 10 laps at Daytona. They make it nearly impossible to get cars without micro transactions. The roulette system is set up in such a way that 99% of the time you get the smallest reward so you have no other choice but to purchase credits if you want to obtain certain cars. This is something you would normally see in a F2P game, not one that cost $70. They recently further nerfed payouts for races just to push things further toward micro transactions.
I would have been happy with a length campaign like the old days (which is what they sold me on), but that certainly isn't what is in this game. Not to mention you cant play campaign when servers go down.
To further ruin the experience my game was bugged for 4-5 days where if I opened licenses to complete them the game would just shut down. I reached out to PD and Sony and neither would do anything. Dont waste your money buying this game they certainly don't care about you after they have your money. I'll never buy another PD game again, which is a shame because I thought they were one of the good devs left. apparently microtransactions bring even the top companies down.

Now it doesn't sit well with me that the Boss says things will improve...improvements (key game making) on this level should have been in the game already.

What's the bet soon we will see a season pass for $49.95 as a pay-gate for future content.

I will not be participating in the rout by PD/Sony.

Roulette tickets are a joke. The chance to win something decent is terrible.

The outage...OK fair enough, but the communication to the community was appalling.

The fact that Collector Level means what? Nothing....you are supposed to earn credits (or buy them with a credit card) and buy cars and this raises your collector level...it takes so much to raise this and you get zip, nil, nada for it....so why both with it...was it just to fill a gap on the screen?

The need to be ONLINE or you can't play is predatory.

No true endurance races...where's the ones of 30-50 laps races...boring with current selections!

The advertising states you can sell cars...you cant! - But there is an achievement that wants you to buy the same car 10 times....guess what, if you do this you are left with 9 cars you cant use...and can't sell...LOL, what a joke!!

RIP Gran Turismo franchise...the party is well and truly over.

Let me know when someone starts a "Class Action" against Sony and Polyphony Digital. 'Fraudulent Misrepresentation' and 'Breach of a Constructive Trust' come to mind.

The camera alignments, especially behind the car and on the hood are a joke and look like a copy paste. The graphics are certainly not bad, but they have as much to do with next gen as an unripe banana in the freezer. Already the rain effects are a joke. How can a single modder at assetto corsa conjure up hyper-realistic rain effects and Polyphony digital, a 300-strong development team can't manage this?

Forza 7 has some better textures and lighting effects ingame, a 5 year old game. Then this lie referring to raytracing. This is only available in the menu and in the replays, here the end customer was misled by the marketing.
The microtransactions weren't mentioned by any game journalists as they weren't included during the initial testing phase, that's cheating and pure guerrilla marketing.

Even worse are the far too meager races, as GT4 was able to offer multiple times more when it was released. This seems to me to be an arbitrary decision by the developer to stop players from grinding so that more money can flow into the microtransactions, the last patch with the reduced prize money confirms this enormously.

What has happened to sony and polyphony digital? From such a great service with manageable microtransactions to an artificial money printing machine. How can such a large and renowned company miss the target so far?

This wouldn't normally be an issue but race rewards have been NERFED. The reason behind the high car prices from the developer is to reflect real world prices, well who in the world would pay 100k for a Nitrous system?! Timed released cars require a large amounts of money and are designed to incorporate micro transactions.
The car selection is really lacking also. Sure it seems like a lot of cars, but most are are just recycled. They are the same cars but rebranded as rally, police, concept, or different year versions. My actual favorite was the 2019 Supra and the 2020 Supra.
I was overly hyped for the game because of my love of cars. This game managed to take the toxic side of the car community and pack it into a game. If that was the goal of the game, then they did a great job. I bought this game to relax and drive cars, and escape from the reality that I'll never drive a Bugatti. Now I'm stuck with a game that has boring races, terrible dirt tracks, and no real replay value. More disappointed in this game than cyberpunk, and at least they offered a refund. I didn't take a refund from them, but this game I would. I would rather play a buggy game with heart, than a void experience forcing me to micro transactions. Great job ruining this game after the first patch that was geared towards reducing player economy, than fixing things like dirt maps.

Then there's the gameplay which tbh can be fun in certain races but I have had so many races where I'm quite frankly bored, the Endurance and nascar being some of the worst offenders. Also the campaign can frequently leave you frustrated as npc's on every difficulty can spin you out in a moments notice without any warning or penalty attached to it. Then last but not least there's the pesky microtransactions that quite frankly breaks the game as they are really hard to avoid especially after the latest patch which nerfs the prize money and ups the prices of some cars. This in my opinion was the last straw for me which makes me want to give it up. How did poliphony not realise this would annoy players and push them away from ever picking it up again. Beats me. I thought $70 was a lot but that I would be rewarded. I poured hours into the game over the first week and was moderately annoyed at the roulette wheel, but could live with it. Little did I know this was an online only pay to win game. I would never have bought it for that price. As soon as the server was cut I could not play the single player game (it makes me sick to my stomach that I wasted money on this, I could play that stupid real racing 3 on my phone for free if I wanted that experience). Then I find out they are nerfing the already low payouts for races, not to mention used cars like the GT-R from the mid nineties going for $369000 (that is just insane). The prizes for winning were still pinned to 1998, but the cost of the cars pinned to some insane currently inflated price tag, and then they cut it in half. That is just nuts.

Sony and PD, why on earth would I even turn the game on again at this point. I haven't, it has sat unplayed for almost a week now on this news. I can't even understand the calculus behind the decision, unless it is just pure greed, again if I wanted to play a game like that I could just play that stupid mobile game real racing 3. I have no interest in F2P, and I certainly feel ripped off right now. I am angry that I even invested in a wheel and pedals to play this game and then this happened. What a bait and switch, what poor practice, what poor handling. I hope this game score hits 0.0 and lives in infamy for how to poorly handle your most loyal customers. Because what you are doing is sticking your thumb in the eye of the people who cared most about your system and your game. GT7 is the reason a lot of people even chose PS5 over Xbox SX... Well it used to be, it probably will be a reason people choose to not return now. Seriously, if I was in your shoes I would be fixing this today, not tomorrow, not next week, not in a month, today. Because, quite frankly, the damage you are doing to your reputation and the rep of this series is pretty close to irreversible.

I hope you read these reviews, a lot of people are upset, and it is because you changed the fundamentals of a solid game into a cash cow for milking. Treating your customers with disrespect by breaking the game and MTX is always a way to lose money and support.

Gran Turismo 7 has a lot of good and plenty of great. The use of DualSense and the particularly well-tuned loading is exemplary, and there's a huge amount of work behind the game, with a lot of detail that's almost hard to believe at times. [Issue#318]

Gran Turismo 7 brings to the tracks every single thing fans always wanted: the GT Mode everyone loves, plenty of customization options, car loads, classic scenarios and one of the best DualSense and 3D Audio experiences the PS5 has to offer. This is the best Gran Turismo experience we have ever seen in a long time.

Gran Turismo 7 is a love letter to motorsport history and an impeccable technical showcase. The franchise's traditional formula gets good improvements, but it's still extremely true to its roots. One of the best racing series ever shines spectacularly on the PS5.
