    Bad gameplay, too many irritating mandatory puzzles, too many cutscenes, not enough changes from the previous game... Even most execution animations are the same. The storyline makes little sense and some characters like Jormungandr and Fenrir feel completely irrelevant. The game feels rushed even after so many years in development and it got repetitive pretty fast.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I did enjoy some parts of the game, I had the most dissatisfaction with the story and characters. Let me list some pros and cons

    Pros:
    - Satisfying combat, more enemy variety, verticality
    - Beautiful art direction
    - Barely any bugs, smooth gameplay

    Cons:
    - Story: Based on the trailers, I had the bare minimum expectation of an epic story. The story, however, was very bland and unambitious. Jormungander did not play any significant role. There was no time travel. Everything in the story went against what we saw in the murals from the last game. It felt like the theme of "denying fate" was an excuse to not include events depicted in 2018's murals. No (real) Tyr leading us into Asgard, no giants raiding Asgard, etc. Did we even get to see who blew the horn from 2018's game? I hated playing Atreus as well. The segment in Ironwood was so boring and dragged out.

    - Characters: I felt the characters were rushed. Characters like Angrboda and Thrud were easily forgettable and annoying. I did not have any problems with Atreus in the previous game, but in this game, man is he one annoying **** He's the typical angsty teenager depicted in early 2000's shows. Makes me feel like I'm playing Abby the ogre from the Last of Us 2. In this game, one of the themes was trust between a father and son, but Kratos did not reveal much about his past to Kratos, but instead to Freya and Mimir. Like what? I wanted to hear Kratos talk about his pale skin, red tattoos, what he did in Greece, etc. to Atreus! NOT FREYA AND MIMIR. And boy was Thor a total letdown. He did not provide the level of excitement that was presented from Baldur. Only 2 fights with Thor that wasn't as grand as the ones with Baldur. They tried to make us sympathize with Thor and his family issues but I just couldn't. I'm playing GOD OF WAR, not GOD OF SYMPATHY. All in all, this game lacked the epicness and ambition from previous titles, it was not exciting to play.

    - Boss fights: The boss fight with Thor in the beginning and the fight with Heimdall were somewhat satisfying, but the others were bland. The fights with Niohogg and Garm were so lame. I guess it's just me hoping for boss fights like in God of War 2 and 3, but seriously, fighting in a flat arena and hitting the bosses when they are vulnerable for a couple of seconds gets so repetitive and boring.

    - Asgard: What a total letdown. I was hoping to see the pinnacle of Norse architecture after climbing the wall but all I see is a small wooden village.

    All in all, the game felt rushed. I heard that they were originally thinking of making the Norse saga into a trilogy, but instead compressed it into 2 games which may explain the lack of content that I was hoping for.    … Expand

    Probably fine if you are twelve.
    I'm not. The game has very nice vistas and good music. That's it.

    The fighting isn't interesting nor challenging. With Kratos it's just "OK", but his son is not good at all.
    The story holds no interest. It's bland and uninspired. If Kratos doesn't deserves his title of God of War anymore, I find Atreus properly insufferable. You have hear that brat's two brain-cells attempts at manipulation all the time.

    The dialogues are pure drivel. And, to top it, you can't skip any of them. I can only explain why they would inflict them on us by hubris and utter contempt for the player's time. I've spent most of the "cinematic" time watching YouTube and it was just bearable ... up to a point.

    First, there was that squirrel that has childish vibes that I don't like at all, thankfully I may never see it again.
    But later in the story, you suddenly encounter another annoying child (with a surprising very non-Scandinavian look : I guess someone has to check that box, that's not the issue here).
    She uses kind of paint-ball attacks that may be appealing if your are a young girl or something. For an adult man who bought this for fights and blood, it's cringe inducing.
    The game proceeds to ask to to do some slow, tedious, utterly boring harvesting task, slowly carried by some cow. After a few minutes I simply had to stop : Animal crossing isn't my thing.
    I've waited two days to go back. My first move was to mute the voices : much better.
    But an hour or so later, I was still on that stupid cow doing some stupid tasks interrupted by lame fights.
    No, no way. F this, I'll reroll an Elden Ring character instead.    … Expand

    A game that after 4 years looks like a dlc. He still has the same shoddy physics and no one in the press seems to care. A very similar combat with an annoying camera, the non-main characters have a poorer design and quality and the scenarios are continually hidden in fog, the ps5 does not contribute much with its ssd and does not have the possibility of ray tracing of any kind. theA game that after 4 years looks like a dlc.     The games is OK. It's more of the same from the first gow. Graphics aren't as big of an improvement as you would think from a ps5 game. The gameplay is nothing to special. The hype was not worth the wait.

    15 hours of cut-scenes, 10 hours of gameplay.

    PS4 gen game, Corridor slow pacing mostly forward-lined, super mediocre in terms of character progression and Armor/Weapon. Same monsters and locations as in gow'18. Continuous spoiling suggestions from mates on what and how to turn/put/solve/brake during a puzzles - shows how this game being targeted for 13+ year teen minds..     Its just a polished game with story for teens Arteases age.
    However this game cant stand even closely with such big boyz like Assassin Creed Valhalla or Elden Ring.. It is not! its like an expansion for 2018 GOW

    Decepcionante, estos de Santa Mónica que les tenía en lo más alto se han cargado esta maravillosa saga. Han convertido a KRATOS el jodido dios de la guerra que con sólo esa mirada a hércules se meo el los galllumbos en un tertuliano del sálvame. Juego soporífero muy a mi pesar.

It was the biggest disappointment of 2022, the story made no sense and the antagonists were a joke, the dialogue was corny Af, and the characters sounded like marvel characters rather than characters from Norse Mythology. Kratos is not Kratos anymore. Atreus is annoying af and overall the story feels like it was written by a child. They ruined a story that had so muchWtf was this game. But the BIG problem is, this is not God of War, this is just a Marvel movie. They transformed Kratos into a banana; the guy only cry and talk about how he became a hippie.     The level design sucks, especially the puzzle. Battle design is almost same as God of war(ps4). DON'T waste $70 on this game unless your are fan of the ps4 God of war.

    Encontré interesante el que estuviese un Dios de la guerra que provenía de la antigua Grecia para hacerle frente ahora a Dioses Nórdicos. Demasiado Soporífera, pierde muy rápido el ritmo que hace parecer al Digimon Survive un juego con mayor ritmo siendo    Como juego de video cumple a medias.

    A lot of tedious filler, picking up hacksilver, mashing attack button, throw axe at bucket, pick up hacksilver...repeat...just not very interesting to me. Also, the story felt a bit stale, seems like they've already covered most of their ideas for plot in previous games.

Graphics and OST are amazing, story is bellow average and gameplay is... bad. Atreus and Kratos were a disappointment, the people from Asgard talk like they're from California, Mimir and Freyr probably will be on the next Marvel movie and they killed the only good side character in the entire game. Just another terrible overrated third person walking simulator with reused assets and boring gameplay. In its core just a 80$ DLC for the already bad 2018 version. Stay away from it if you actually like video games and not movies.

    I expected more from this game. Sadly, it feels like a copy and paste from God of War 2018. The lack of innovation really hurts the narrative and dull gameplay. Once you look past the hype, this game is just another linear action game with a decent narrative.

    God of war 2018 is masterpiece. More than half of Ragnarök was slogfest.
    Dreadful Atreus levels w very limited exploration and rewards
    Then u got forced walk n talk, automatic platforming with zero danger and npc ''narrator'' telling u what to do 90% of the time. Game developers treat the player as baby....
    Very rushed ending

    This God of war is just a Fake Ragnarok, nothing happens from the beginning to the end and we take no pleasure to play, go take Sonic Frontiers instead, there is gameplay at least there.

    Honestly one of the most beautiful and complete games I have ever played it's a lovely experience start to finish and has a level of polish other games just don't match. This is modern gaming done right and pretty much perfect.

    imo the best combat ever from the first game is even better... feels smoother and the enemy variety which was probably the only con you can attach to GoW 2018 is vastly improved.

    Continues the Story set up perfectly and closes it up in a emotional and satisfaying way. The Great Characters are even Better. Soundtrack is perfect. Graphics are the best on the market. Traversal    imo the best combat ever from the first game is even better... feels smoother and the enemy variety which was probably the only con you can attach to GoW 2018 is vastly improved.

    Continues the Story set up perfectly and closes it up in a emotional and satisfaying way.

    The Great Characters are even Better.

    Soundtrack is perfect.

    Graphics are the best on the market.

    Traversal is much better.

    Puzzles are more complex (tho the characters help too much for my liking).

    The Wiritng is honestly some of the best ive seen in a video game.

    Simply magnificent. In a day and age when we get incomplete or sometimes outright broken game releases, GoW Ragnarok stands as a towering achievement in the industry. The story, gameplay, visuals, sound design, acting, everything about this game is state of art. And above all else, it's ridiculously fun to play. Highly recommended

    This is my favorite god of war yet. Its the total package and Im thankful I have had the opportunity to play it. The combat improved, environments breathtaking, customization of gameplay is great & story is fantastic. I had a lot of minor glitches where I had to restart my check point, restart game & some buttons didn't work but thats it but hopefully a patch fixes these, very veryThis is my favorite god of war yet.     This is a century defining game, it didn't only made us feel the power, frustration, pain, suffering and rage when we were young, but ut evolved everything to an unprecedent new level. The story, the caring for details. This is a masterpiece and deserve only the best.

    The story this time around is laughably convoluted and the pacing is just atrocious. There are HOURS of unskippable walking sections and cutscenes that have you stuck listening to some of the sappiest dialogue imaginable. Sounds more like an ethics lecture for elementary school children than centuries old beings discussing the consequences of their actions.

    combat is still much the same as 2018 but feels more restrictive. A few late game abilities will reward you for just spamming the same move over and over.

    The creativity and roots of this franchise are gone and I dread the thought of Santa Monica's next game after all the smoke the critics have blown up their muffs.    … Expand

    I have played video games for the last 20 years and it's games like God of war ragnarok what keeps me playing, there's really not surprise that a playstation exclusive is good, but God of war takes your expectations and makes them even better. There is really not a negative thing to say, ragnarok is a masterpiece and if you own a ps4/ps5, you have to get this game.

Avoid avoid, it even killed the respect I had for the first one. How can you release a game like this. The story is almost all written in the mythology, how can you be so lame at writing a story??! Some people don't deserve their job. The puzzle mechanics?? OMG let me move the camera 1.5 seconds before giving me the whole solution and repeat it until I do what you asked for!! The graphics are the same than the first one but the story, OMG what a shame. The gameplay is worst, far worst. I wanted to play something else than Elden Ring for a bit, just to try this present I had for my birthday... Guess I'll uninstall and never purchase any God of War ever again. Amazing gameplay, wonderful story and ending and wonderful music. Even the side quests feel as big as the main quests. It’s simply a masterpiece.     I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

    Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.
