A part of it - game looks like a very big DLC to the previous part, good finish and story in general. Some of the characters wasn’t “opened” well, hope they will recover it in the next part? A lot of questions without answers as well. Hope they will hear out their fans and will remove all ridiculous characters from the next game. Expand

Pretty much a DLC for 2018. Hasn't really evolved gameplay wise.

Dialogue is Marvelesque with cheap oneliners spoken in modern American accent and vocabulary.

Kratos has almost completely changed as a character. Instead of being a more mature, stoic warrior from 2018, he is filled with emotions and has his heart in his hand.

This is not your traditional Gof of War. You are not always in control of Kratos. Just think of Sony making God of War like they did with Last of Us 2 playing Abby. Not invested in Abby or Atreus, too bad you will be forced to play the character.

The story is actually less adult oriented and more in line with teens. Its still a decent game but I would wait for a sale. Its the weakest

Let me give you 2 pieces of advice.

    1. Play on hardest difficulty. Actually its not really hard but its the only way to actually enjoy the gameplay which is perfect. This way you learn all the moves and play to 100%. 2. Go for side quests as soon as they are available. this way you will make main bosses easier and if you come back to side quests after you will be too high level and one

Overall great game and number 2 for me after elden ring this year.

Personally I think this game missed the mark. It is padding hard, overstays its welcome and has some good aspects, e.g., locations, visuals. However, the story progress, traversing and fighting are definitely the worst part of it.

Personally I think this game missed the mark. It is padding hard, overstays its welcome and has some good aspects, e.g., locations, visuals. However, the story progress, traversing and fighting are definitely the worst part of it.

Simply said fighting heavy, unresponsive and unnecessary cumbersome /artificial difficult which slows down enemy engagement. Weapons don't have weight, lock on is bad, you constantly get attacked from enemies out of view, the enemies do not flinch - The Draugr / boss encounters being the worst offender for enemy health, damage and arena and (mini-)boss design and layout. Even standard enemies feel "spongey" and damage you receive seems way over-tuned, leaving you in defense / reaction mode most of the times (at least above normal difficulty; haven't tested below).

When I think about it, the gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Dark Souls but in a bad way, as the latter has not that many unblockable attacks and encounters feel better designed (thus feeling better IMO). Bottom line, from a gameplay-perspective, the mechanics are not as sophisticated to stand on their own and, thus, are not on par with other hack-n-slay-games, e.g., DMC, Bayonetta or even old GOW, as well as DS, though this may be intentional. IMO this game feels frustrating for the wrong reasons.

Further aspects relevant to the (lowered) score, in short: The game crashes on PS5; the performance (FPS) is not great / stable unless on performance mode which does impact quality a great deal; the map design is visually great but gameplay-wise repetitive; the gameplay basically hasn't changed much / at all from GoW 2018, which is probably due to the same weapons, I wanted God of War but this has too much (God of) Junior in it, while Kratos doesn't feel powerful at all.

As the sequel to the God of War 2018 reboot, this game has done it again. The story telling and following the evolving relationship between Kratos and Atreus is so captivating. Teaching new lessons to aspiring fathers such as myself. Amazing story, great gameplay, and my vote for Game of the Year

An amazing game that is unfortunately held back by questionable combat and camera choices.

The narrative and story telling in this game is phenomenal. Just like the first game, it really feels like you're almost playing a movie. They break up the game much better than the first with much more obvious side quest areas. The side quests themselves are worth doing just for the narrative elements alone. They are truly amazing and fulfilling pieces of content that are just as good as the main storyline. They also are almost a necessity if you are playing on the harder difficulties.

The armor, weapon, and skill tree systems have all been expanded from the first game. There's a lot of terrific rpg elements to be found here with lots of ways to customize your builds.

Unfortunately the combat still has some pretty massive issues, especially on the harder difficulties. It can be somewhat hard to explain because it really just comes down to the combat not "feeling quite right."

Hit indicators are absolutely terrible. Attacks coming from 180 degrees in front of the player have no hit indicators at all. There's way too much going on the screen for a player to be able to see a fireball coming from a 90 degree angle. The VAST majority of my deaths are from due to offscreen, barely visible attacks. It also seems that even the hit indicators from behind don't always work. If your camera is slightly tiled downward, if an enemy is in the camera view, the hit indicator won't show.

Almost every enemy has some form of super armor during certain attacks. You will often be hit in the face as you're absolutely wrecking an enemy. This can even occur during some runic attacks. This is one of the worst aspects of GOW combat. There should be very few and very specific enemies that have super armor. When you're fighting a group of 10 enemies, the last thing you want is for a random grunt to disrupt the combat chain because they decided to launch one of their random attacks that gives them super armor. This is probably much less of an issue on the easier difficulties, but if you're playing on the hardest difficulty, one hit from a grunt his likely at least half your health. The combat often doesn't feel like it "flows" well as a result.

Which also leaves me to my next point, which is that gear upgrades on the hardest difficulties almost have no purpose. Every enemy will two shot you. This is the laziest form of difficulty scaling. Difficulty should come with better AI, more attack patterns, and smarter encounters... not just scaling the damage up 300%.

I know that some people will say "just turn down the difficulty," and they might be right to some degree. Turning down the difficulty will probably result in the combat flowing better, but I don't think that's the actual issue at heart. Kratos should feel powerful, and he just doesn't when a random grunt ignores your attacks.

Despites GoW shortcomings and frustration in combat, they are mostly overshadowed by its many incredible moments and overall story telling.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
