TLDR: Amazing game, if you are a fan of action games similar to DMC, enjoy the intense emotions of Game of Thrones style, this would be a top tier game, highly recommend.

This is currently my game of the year, in this era of sequels and remakes, this does come as a completely fresh and new experience that has been sorely missed in many regards. This game gives a solid foundation of story building along with an easy way to access information in most cutscenes if you are ever wondering who or what is going in, even the world to lead to this moment.

The Action - Gameplay of this is stellar, the fighting feels very smooth, and each new ability unlock gives an excitement to try out and see if you want to change your full set to adapt this into your moves. Fighting is flashy, the stagger system adds element of strategy whether wish to pump out raw damage or stun enemies to dish it out, I found both viable but merely matters how you enjoy playing which is nice. The only complaint I have, is once you find your groove, it can be hard to mix it up, towards certain point I found -my- combo and everything extra never got used enough to find if viable, since the flow of combat was so smooth already.

The Story - From the beginning you find it wholesome enough, but it shows its fangs and sinks its dark gritty teeth in and refuses to let go. It is extremely well thought out, even sub quests lead to expanding the world and characters, but the world feels alive, once it catches you, you want to just keep going through. You'll have characters love, others absolutely despise, and death is not lightly here, if you know Game of Thrones, you'll know every character is at risk of departing too early.

Which can be a drawback, losing certain characters that added a mood that made it easier to deal with situations and brought humor or joy to even out those dark moments can be a hindrance. The story is solid up to about 75% way in, pacing does get little weird with certain motivations to feel for certain characters coming up short and not as climactic as feels it should have been. The good news is the ending does pay off well, feeling epic throughout as did previously and gives a satisfying conclusion.

Graphics - Per usual Final Fantasy games have amazing graphics, emotions can be easily read in cutscenes by facial expressions alone, the landscape is gorgeous, and many details are laid about to add to the world building, if know where to look. There are some moments in the sub quests where character interactions are bit lackluster, there is issues with running 60fps even on performance mode, and I experienced very few glitches in landscape, granted none of this felt bad to knock this, only to mention, but was plans to patch these issues in works already.

The Devs - I feel this is important to add in current sphere of gaming, compared to many other games that are triple A, the devs that were behind this game actually -care- about their players and the product they made. There is no microtransactions, no plans to milk us for profits or battlepass stuff, we get to experience a solid story, with solid gameplay.

As final summary, obviously this game is not the shining perfect beacon to end all be all, I would certainly change somethings, even in the story. However, this an amazing game for people wanting darker stories and feeling epic, letting you battle however you feel comfortable with plenty of options. That said, concerning this whole review bombing, I felt to add my own review as I know this game and the team behind it deserve better.

There is no definition of what 'Final Fantasy' games should be like, or they should all be turn-based. I've been playing FF games since the 1980s from native JP FF1. in the old days, we didn't have the technology to support fast pace action games, so turn-based games make sense.

In this modern world, I'm glad to see Yoshi-P and his team is not afraid to try new things and push things to the limit, truly showcasing what the PS5 hardware is capable off. Gone are the days where you wait for the next pre-rendered cut scene to happen. Now, not only you are part of the cut scene, they managed to introduce real-time action combat within as well.

Of course, because actions are real-time there will be less turn-base aspect to them. Instead of planning and coordinating attacks by utilizing you 'traditional' team of 3-4. You now have to learn boss mechanics in real time. For me, this is not as issue as I also do savage/ultimate raids in FF14, and this actually makes combat a lot more interesting and can actually get quite challenging at times. I get how this can be challenging or frustrating to those who are used to more slow paced battles, but Yoshi-P's team spent the extra time to introduce items to make combat easier shows that they understand and they cares.

Lastly, I just have to add that even if some players don't like this title because it is not 'traditional' enough for them and give this a big '0'. I'll challenge them and ask if they can rate the story, music and technical spectacle a '0' as well. If they do, than I'd say most other games out there also deserve a '0' except a very selected few.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FFXVI’s gameplay is nothing short of exhilarating. Simplistic though it may begin, through progression, the combat becomes deep, complex, and extremely satisfying. Combat feels intuitive, simple, yet complex enough to offer variety. With “Devil May Cry-esque” combo style, when you finish a particular long fight with one of the Eikon’s final abilities (Mastered Flames of Rebirth being my personal favorite) you feel as powerful as Mythos should. Additionally, the game adds seamless transitions from in-game combat to cinematic combat in the form of QTEs (Dodge, Strike, and Clash) which enhance the spectacle without distracting you from the action.

I played this with the Ring of Timely Focus equipped the entire time, so I can’t speak much about the difficulty save for it wasn’t as challenging as Elden Ring, but I also played it on story focused mode. I never felt underpowered or overpowered.

Nothing more can be said about the writing accomplishments of the Final Fantasy writers other than they are some of the best in the industry and the writing in Final Fantasy XVI was nothing short of magnificent. Every story beat, every main quest, every side activity came with a compelling human story. Stories about slavery, prejudice, life, death, nihilism, everything in between give the story a more adult feel which is only made better with the atmosphere, characters, and score. Final Fantasy XVI is probably the first game in which the side missions felt just as important as the main questline. Even the dreaded “fetch” quests were brilliantly incorporated, and none felt like a chore.

While the graphics won’t win it any awards competing with the graphical powerhouses by the likes of God of War Ragnarok, Last of Us Part II, or Horizon Forbidden West, the graphics in FF16 are a touch more improved than its predecessor FF15. Fidelity and textures aside, the environments themselves looked handcrafted and hand placed. The detail of each settlement, the topography, the atmosphere was expertly rendered making the world feel lived in, beautifully serene yet grim. From the forest, deserts, marshes, cities, hamlets, etc., the level designers have done so well with their world-building that I couldn’t help but to take a moment to admire the world around me no matter how trivial or insignificant they were to the story writ large.

While much of the story has you follow open-world corridors, once you’ve run through the entirety of each territory, the map feels more akin to open sandboxes such as what Bioware achieved with Dragon Age II. But that’s not to say that this was poor design. On the contrary, the overall story benefits from the more linear paths to help players get invested in the lore of the world which by the way is a new feature during cutscenes.

Amazingly orchestrated, FF16’s musical tracks perfectly encapsulate the atmosphere of the world expertly. Nothing more to say. It’s a Final Fantasy game afterall. My only complaint was the music that triggered when mounting your Chocobo which sometimes took me out of a serious moment with its goofier theme.

I finished my first playthrough with a total of 64 hours of gametime. There is a New Game + feature in which you keep all your items and gear, but I haven’t embarked on that journey yet. However, I imagine that you can easily get more than 100+ hours of content out of this title which is becoming more of a rare oddity with recent RPG titles. And there are hopes of future DLC.

In all my playtime, I NEVER experienced anything remotely buggy or glitchy. And as of this review, Final Fantasy 16 has not have a single update since launch and it doesn’t really need one. I should need to tell you how rare that is in today’s world.

SUMMARY: This game is a masterpiece in my eyes. From the characters, the world, the story, its’ themes, its atmosphere, the musical score, the gameplay, the scale, everything just feels good, and I would hope after reading this review, you will give it a try. And if you are a fan of Final Fantasy as a whole, you must pick this up, you won’t be disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wrote a 5000 character review, but metacritic failed and I lost my review.

I will summarize. The game is very good, not great. The first 75% of the game is vastly superior to the final 25%. There are many things to praise, like the epic moments and the fun combat, and many things to criticize, like the lack of depth to the combat and party characters. While I'm at it, I'll also criticize the FPS and worst motion blur in a game ever. And I'll praise the story and lore creation. Custcenes in the game are also excellent.

Eikon moments are absolutely awesome. Leviathan is "Lost", and absent from the game entirely, which is super confusing. Odin doesn't get a proper Eikon battle, but does have some great cutscenes. Ultima is really lame and underwhelming.

Voice acting is top notch. Dialogue is good. Great at points, cringe at others. Profanity is fine to introduce, but it is overdone. No one repeats "F F F F F F F" in a string of words, literally. The final part of the game does become overly dramatic with the characters dialogues.

Characters themselves are mostly very good. Clive is excellent, but the game and subsequent supporting characters suffer from Clive being a one man army. There are however, other lovable characters, like Byron and Cid and Torgal. Other hatable characters like Annabelle and Benedikta and Barnabas. Other characters somewhere in between. Strong cast, but none of them are as deeply explored as Clive, and the game would be better if some of these and other characters would have been more fleshed out.

The open areas of the game, and pacing of the story sections I think give me hope for FF7 Rebirth to absolutely knock it out of the park.

There's a lot of good to like in this game. I would love to give all of my feedback to the devs, because they created a very good game, an excellent one at parts, but one that is held back by a number of things, as well as missing the boat on something can make a final fantasy game truly special. It's like they gambled it all on combat that would be fun and welcoming, while all but abandoning core elements of rpgs and final fantasy games that have gained them their player base over the years.

For me, this is like a 7.5/10. It's absolutely worth a playthrough, as I'm well into the NG+. There's also so much room for improvement, and it would be really nice for Final Fantasy to return to form after 15 and 16 (and to some extent, 13 and even 12), kind of strayed from it to varying extents.

As a final point, FF7 remake is the closest to a true modern FF game that we have, and I hope beyond hope that rebirth delivers an epic experience and creates the benchmark on how FF games should play going forward. Well developed characters, well developed story, and a combat system that is true to form to final fantasy, where magic and abilities and gear and items all work together to create a full FF experience.

Probably the best game I've ever played. Everything about it is super amazing from the boss battles to normal battles. Only gripe I have is that it's a bit too easy and the quick time event window is too large making it feel as though they are kind of pointless. If the input window was a lot smaller and timing a lot tighter it'd feel so much better.

    Positives:
    - Very well constructed and complex narrative, especially the 2nd part of the story
    - well-written Characters that have their own unique struggles
    - Beautifully build world/lore that adds a lot to the over-arching theme of humanity/hope/willpower
    - Impactful and fun gameplay system, each Eikon fills a different "role" (which I suppose is their way of adding some complexity to the gameplay system)
    - Best boss fights I've ever seen in a Video Game
    - Side Quests that are 100% worth doing, since they provide so much context to the ending, lore and world-building
    - Beautiful graphics and scenery with a big drawing distance
    - Chests that you actually need to search, unlike how it was handled in RE4R

    Negatives, albeit minor nitpicks:
    - World feels a bit empty at times, but given the context, it's no surprise really
    - Motion-capture lip sync seems a bit off in every other language other than German/English
    - If you don't like Final Fantasy as a series or don't enjoy narrative driven games, this game might not be as good for you
    - Side Quests need to be done to understand the whole picture
    - Would have loved if we spent more time with the characters in their youth

Easily one of the best in the series. Yes, it may not be a classic final fantasy game, but each game in the series is different. Each numbered game since 12 has had a completely different combat system than the last. That is just what these games have been for a few years now. The writing, the monsters, the bosses the characters. All of it screams final fantasy. There are of course flaws, some side quests do fall flat bust some are just as equally amazing and heart wrenching. I think if they went forward with an FF game like this in the future, they need to flesh out the things to do within and outside of the side quests. Finally while I loved the set pieces and story highs, it did no favors for the moments after these "highs". The momentum just made you want to push through the busy work to get to the big story moments. Which in some way sounds good but makes the downtime in between the moments a little boring and pointless at times.

Still loved it. Will take some time before I end up playing it again however.

This game is easily one of the best Final Fantasy to come out. It's my favorite since 12 and already in my top 5. The combat evolves on itself as the game progresses, it's beautiful, has a great sound track, and endearing characters. Some of the Side quests can feel like a trudge but every one of them add flavor to the world in a unique way.

My only negative would be the no mode where we can equip every 4 or 5 Eikons but that's more of an endgame want,

But honestly, that's not enough: the combat system is absolutely the very best RPG combat system I've yet to encounter. Never a dull moment, with tons of variety and fun to be had. The animations are superb and the combat flows fluidly and without a hitch in a very fast paced and enjoyable manner. I've played a ton of RPGs and nothing compares to this milestone achievement of a combat system they have here: I absolutely love it! And I can't speak enough to the beautiful graphics (I Play in graphics mode on PS5) and the performance in Graphics Mode on PS5 is good. I won't say it's great as this is quite a demanding game for the PS5 hardware, though I'm sure a modern video card would run it at like 60 + fps without a hitch. The PS5 in Graphics mode runs 30-40 fps I'd say (at least that's how it feels when I play). Again, "Good" performance not "Great" but more than satisfactory for me and doesn't take away from the gameplay. Going into this game I didn't expect I'd love it nearly as much as I do. I'm 20+ hours in, so not too far in, but the gameplay loop, story, graphics, diversity in environments and characters, etc., are all top notch and the boss fights are especially rewarding and challenging. 10/10. First, I want to address peoples comment on how people can give 0 to this game. The question is how can someone give 10, which is an absolute perfect when there is no perfect in this world. 0 and 10 are the exact same rating except it’s the polar opposite. The only difference is people actually had to PAY for this game. So it is more likely 0 would exist if they didn’t like the game.First, I want to address peoples comment on how people can give 0 to this game. The question is how can someone give 10, which is an absolute perfect when there is no perfect in this world. 0 and 10 are the exact same rating except it’s the polar opposite. The only difference is people actually had to PAY for this game. So it is more likely 0 would exist if they didn’t like the game. Whereas, fanboys or people with low expectations and the inability to review would give it a 10 for satisfying a couple of category or for just not being bad. If perfect existed in your world, then it is clear that you don’t know what you are talking about. Ever think your spouse or job or anything else in life is perfect?

Now that’s out of the way.

The game clearly has a great artistic feel from music to graphics. I would even say it’s one of the best for environment / feel they are trying to portray like every Final Fantasy. However, that has become the base for a very long time. Over 20-years. It’s like voice acting is expected in games today, so it doesn’t get a 10 for having great music or graphics which it’s already known for as a Final Fantasy title.

That being said, what makes the game suffer is really the creative direction & gameplay of the series. The title is one of first MAIN titles given a rating of M, which says something. That something being their target market is no longer towards the light-hearted adventurous players. You can tell that they are totally targeting the Western audiences with the Brute character designs, blood, gore, and sexual themes etc.

This in of itself makes it a Western RPG not. Japanese RPG.

It’s medieval Europe and I will praise they did not bow to the Woke crowd and adjust to include Blacks. It’s not like they included Asians. No gaming company should bow to the Woke on creativity, that’s why Disney is failing so horribly. At any rate, being set in medieval Europe I would have enjoyed the series a lot more if it had a different Art Direction.

It seems like the Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was just the beginning of the Dark Gore style art. XVI reminds me a lot of it. It really started with XV but these type of art direction is only captivating to Western players. Previously, even during the PS1 era, a lot of people hated JRPGs or video games in general. They only started climbing aboard gaming during Xbox 360’s release. That has caused the FPS genre to take off. These players are often polar opposites.

This game basically threw away what final elements it had as an JRPG (started at FF13) in attempt to capture the Western audiences. Notice the art-style changes vs Tales of, Persona, Xenoblade etc.

One of the most important and greatest things about JRPG is its enormous world, and ability to travel around the world. I’m not talking about travelling around an island or a country but an airship with the ability to dive in water or into the air to roam the world. That has completely disappeared.

The second, is the light-hearted main characters, elements that appeal to teenagers or younger audiences. It is clear to me from the art direction, that they no longer want to appeal to younger audiences except probably the older Western generation from the PS1 and 360 eras. Look at the difference between popular games like Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite etc vs the New Final Fantasy Art styles. This has bothered me, because I prefer light-hearted characters opposed to brutes of the Western games.

I remember someone made a video talking about Cloud, how he looks like a girl and they can’t take him to a bar for a beer like Thor. Brutes are the character designs of the Western society. It’s like how woman look like crap in video games for West vs Japanese designs. So I don’t like their art and creative direction. This game atmosphere reminds me of Vagrant Story from the 90s or the Stranger of Paradise closer to the 2020s. The atmosphere is one of the same, dark, gloomy, etc not magical like Final Fantasy games should be. It is a very Westernized Design for western audiences. Reminds me of another art style Elden Ring.

Other JRPGs like Tales of, Xenoblade, Persona, etc all is taking a very light-hearted approach but Final Fantasy games are becoming what you call Western RPG not JRPG.

    Battle system
I always like new battle systems and learning about them. I don’t really care if it’s button smashing or strategic like Marvel Midnight Suns, it’s all fine to me. However, this is more button smashing.

I would write more but I don’t have time to waste on this review. It’s a hype, and fanboy game. Maybe it will appeal to Western players more, who knows? I guarantee you that a lot of the 10/10 reviews are also fake as I stated nothing in this world is perfect, especially if you paid $$$ for it.

To me, it wasn’t worth the $150. I don’t think it was a life changing game. There was nothing revolutionary about the game.

    Visuals: 10/10

This game is a visual treat, everything from the different clothing materials and how they react to lighting, armour, weapons, environment, monster design, eikon design, characters. Not to mention the great detail gone into animation. The combat is fast, detailed and a real spectacle to watch - as are the large and epic eikon battles that feel like a blockbuster movie.

This really feels like a PS5 game, textures are sharp and detailed. Lighting is wonderful with bloom as you exit indoors and ray tracing. Frames feel fine despite having it on 'graphics' mode. The only noticeable slow down was during an intense eikon battle cut scene, and was very slight. Audio: 10/10

The music is fantastic. Depending on the moment (light hearted, exploring, dramatic/tense, epic battles etc) the game perfectly manages to capture these moments with a great OST. Sound effects are good, from the creatures to the rustling of plants you run through and chaos during battles. Voice acting is Hollywood quality, it gives the atmosphere of a more dour/serious medieval movie. British talent used, and different emotions/moments are captured very well. Gameplay: 10/10

Thought has gone into this game in this regard. Combat is fun, you can fight with Clive's sword and do some different attacks, but thanks to eikon abilities, the amount of attacks/magic or chained movies you can do is impressive. They also look great. You can also evade and if timed right - can get a stronger hit in. Eikon battles other unique styles of fighting each time, one is a throwback to Panzer Dragoon (Sega Saturn) another slow and heavy like a wrestling match, others much faster. You can upgrade your combat abilities too as well as weapons and equipment. Though this is a character/narrative driven game like those before it, you won't be able to fully change your weapon class/clothing. You can select a difficulty level (story or action focussed) and can even wear 'easy mode' rings that make combat simple, not what I'd recommend but if you're quite new you this type of game or find it hard, you can still enjoy everything it has without the difficulty beings an issue.

You can ride a chocobo and navigate the large world, this isn't an open world game like Skyrim, but rather a vast sand box of large open areas interconnected. You can fast travel or cookie explore them on foot, including various towns. You can hold the touchpad at any time including cutscenes to pause and get instant information (up until that point in the story) on the character's you're with, their empires or kingdom they are from. The location, lore etc. This is a great addition as this game has a fairly in-depth story and without this, it'd be easy to lose track of some information/names etc. Storyline: 10/10

It's hard to fault the story in any way. Enix put a lot of thought into this game's world, everything is there for a reason, and all elements, all kingdoms, characters etc are grounded in the same story. Nothing feels out of place or incoherent (like almost all of FF15). Thanks to the detailed world and backstories given, along with the great voice acting. The story already has some of it's work cut out, but it doesn't slack in any way. It is interesting and engrossing, you feel for the character's and grow attached to them, some moments or interactions might make you smile, other big moments will shock or upset you. Also this is an adult game, it feels like LoTR, Elden Ring etc in tone. There's blood and violence, there's sexual innuendo, swearing and grounded/serious atmosphere.

    Summary: 10/10

This is either as good as FFVII or close. As things stand this will very likely be in the running for GoTY. If you have a PS5, you'd be crazy you skip this game.

(Ignore the 0/1* reviews. This is review bombing from people that haven't played the game and they were submitted on the day of it's release)

overall - The game is fine if you like this kind of story, a fan of Devil May Cry, and don't mind endless cutscenes. But that's it. Everything else felt barebones or just filler. It's cutscene, fight, cutscene, rinse repeat. None of the Final Fantasy charm, characters for the most part felt boring especially the non-playable ones. It would've been cool if Jill was an official party member who you could customize and use her for different strategies. Weapon upgrades and crafting are basically nonexistent. Side quests were garbage (way worse than the FF7 Remake ones). There's just very little world building, surprise element, or sense of discovery in this game. Progression and ability page are very uninspired. Not even a freaking side activity or mini game. And even the combat which is the best part of the game is faced with repetitive enemies and strategies. Again, if you like to just watch a story with minimal control go for it. Final Fantasy 7 Remake might've upset people off with some of the story changes but at least it brought the best of what made Final Fantasy great and at the same time modernizing it. Final Fantasy 16 is not geared for fans of the series.

Even with all his numerous issues, this game is an incredibile experience and a rare case in which the AAA quality hits you with all its power. Yes, the RPG elements are superfluous, maybe the standard difficulty Is too easy, but in front of all the things that they did right i just don't understand how you can say this is not a great videogame.

It’s been a long time since a game was so shocking, and it’s also memorable after the end. I hope to launch a DLC.

It's miles better than Final Fantasy 13, better than 15. But it's still not quite up there with the classics, MMO's asside Final Fantasy wont ever be what it used to be
The games good, it's just not 10/10 it does nothing revolutionary that games previously haven't already done, some released many years ago have done it better.

I have played every Final Fantasy game since FFVII and through the entirety of the story of this game, and have done quite a few of the side quests too, overall I agree with other reviewers that it is the best mainline FF game in a decade, that is if you don't consider FFVII Remake and FFXIV Shadowbringers and Endwalker. I believe all those games had a significantly better story than FFXVI. But certainly this game is better than XII, XIII, and way better than XV since the latter was a development nightmare and felt unfinished. However, like most FF games after FFX, this game has quite a few flaws.

Story: Without any spoilers, I was very disappointed with how the story progressed, beyond the first 5-6 hours. At a point about a quarter into the story, it was very clear to me how it is going to progress. The problem with Final Fantasy after FFX is that their stories has become derivative. This felt like a repeat of FF Type-0 story and a poorer version of FFIX story with some elements of Shadowbringers. The script was very poor clear from the fact that the player was literally told at many points what they should think of the story. The best part of the story is Clive, who is the most relatable main character since Tidus of FFX. But the villain is very boring and one-dimensional. Overall, the story arch was very disappointing and in my opinion they dropped the ball with the ending and ruined Clive's arch entirely. I would not give this game any score above 7 based on story alone.

Quests: The quests, even in the main story, can be very tedious at times. Lots and lots of fetch me this and that quests in the main story line that slow down the story in crucial moments and generally feel like fillers. Side quests are even worse. Ever since playing Witcher 3, my bar for quest quality has risen. Many of the quests here felt more like errands/chores than actual quests. I would give the quests a 6 at most.

Gameplay: This was the most disappointing element to me. PlayStation has no shortage of great action games, namely God of War, Horizon, and Uncharted; and FF has always been the main reason I have bought a PlayStation as it was a defining JRPG; with this game, it no longer is and that is sad. If you are new to FF and enjoy action games you may be fine with this. RPGs need not be turn-based necessarily, albeit I greatly enjoy games like Dragon Quest. When I compare this game to other RPGs, such as Elden Ring, or action games like God of War, the gameplay is neither here nor there, and is quite shallow. a 4 or 5 is the best here.
Music: The highlight of this game and the only reason I am giving it a score above 5. Very timely and epic, and on-point throughout the story. A 10 here.

Performance: This game certainly suffers from framerate issues as others have experienced, even in frame rate optimized mode. A 5 here.

Conclusion: Overall, I was very disappointed after playing 30+ hrs of the story mode and this is going to be one of the more forgettable Final Fantasy games for me. The story was very derivative, and it felt like retelling of FFIX, XIII, XIV Shadowbringers, and Type-0. Final Fantasy games have become derivative and lost their originality. I did not enjoy the direction they took the gameplay and found the quests tedious. I recommend this game to you only if you ARE NOT a Final Fantasy fan. If you are, prepare to be bored and disappointed.

Nothing else comes close to being as good as Final Fantasy XVI. This is and will always be the best game of all time.

Weak as a RPG with a lack of systems and worthwhile loot. Weak as a character action game with its lack of combat options. Piss easy difficulty throught the first playthrough. Squandered potential in its story as it nosedives into tonedeaf JRPG tropes. All in all it was a slog and would not recommend.

Kind of shocking really. I didn't know they still made games that were (not really exaggerating) 75% cutscenes with cheesy QTEs and where the only interaction with the environment is press button to duck under or squeeze through things. The first hours are pretty excruciating with the amount of walking down hallway to next cutscene that happens. Action combat seems to be the big selling point here, but for me it's kind of meh. Trash mobs can just be button mashed to death. Bosses and big monsters are a little more engaging, but only a little. They should probably just drop the RPG pretense entirely, since the numbers go up more or less on a set schedule and the gear is basically handed to you in an extremely straightforward way. It's not a bad system, just not enough to keep me interested if the rest of the game is me just sitting through a movie and occasionally carrying things back and forth for NPC side quests. Maybe it's my fault, but I shouldn't have played this right after Tears of the Kingdom. My immediate thought upon seeing beautiful vistas and grand environments are of how they're basically static paintings and there will be nothing to explore or discover there. I need a little more engagement than press R2 to open the door. Expand

Truly peak final fantasy with amazing combat and E-IKONIC boss fights. Don't listen to the noise, judge for yourself. The side content can feel a bit MMO-like but you don't need to do those. An easy 10.

This game is phenomenal. People trying to say it's not a FF game are just stuck in the early 2000s and don't get me started on Xbox player being mad. Super great story and characters and addicting game loop

People nowadays accept paying 80$ for a game that has framedrops well below 60 and resolution goes as low as 720p. A mediocre game at best overhyped by their own fans and gaming media. Battles are way too easy, you can just press two buttons (rip square one) and any extra skills that you use make it a kids play. Setting, story, chars and monsters are the only interesting thing that save this game.

I'm only halfway through but it's already in my top 5 Final fantasy games.
It helps to go in with an open mind, don't expect the FF of old, it hasn't been turn based in over two decades.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
