Final Fantasy XVI is a remarkable addition to the franchise, delivering an unforgettable experience that combines captivating storytelling, thrilling combat, and breathtaking Eikon battles. This game feels like a return to form for the single player FF's.

The storytelling in Final Fantasy XVI is masterfully executed, taking the time to explain lore and characters to create the rich and immersive world of Valisthea. Characters relationships are deeply developed, making them relatable and memorable. Clive's story keeps players emotionally invested, resulting in a captivating journey from start to finish.

The combat system sets a new bar for other action games. Each battle is a spectacle, filled with fast-paced movements, strategic decision-making, and skillful combos. The result is a dynamic and thrilling experience that keeps players engaged throughout their adventures. For those not familiar with action games, the accessibility options make the combat easy to pick up, especially if you're more interested in story.

The Eikon battles in Final Fantasy XVI are awe-inspiring showcases of power and scale. These massive encounters with Final Fantasy's summons leave a lasting impression with stunning visuals, mesmerizing animations, and changing set pieces. Each clash with an Eikon tops the last, I found myself at the edge of my seat the whole ride.

Visually, the graphics are a feast for the eyes. The detailed environments and towns create a world that feels more grounded than other AAA games, while still keeping the fantastical theme we'd expect in a Final Fantasy game.

The musical score of Final Fantasy XVI is a masterpiece in its own right. Enchanting melodies and stirring orchestrations perfectly complement the game's atmosphere, enhancing the emotional impact of every moment. Soken's soundtrack leaves a lasting impression and will surely be regarded as some of his greatest work.

FFXVI is a remarkable addition to the franchise, earning its place among the greats. With its engrossing story, thrilling combat, and awe-inspiring Eikon battles, Yoshi-P and the team at CBU3 delivered a gaming experience that is nothing short of epic.

Was hesitant bc I’ve never really played final fantasy well since ff10 but I gotta say it’s an amazing game and worth every penny if you like gow or any other action adventure game with rpg elements or are just a final fantasy fan then you’re going to absolutely love this game. Must buy 9 outta 10 for me

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is genuinely the best game i've ever played. The experience was unreal, it made you feel every emotion possible. first off the story, its done perfectly. the pacing is great(granted you do some side-quests lol) and a it never gets boring and every time you stop playing it leaves you itching to play more and continue the stellar story
next the side-quests. they are some of the best side-quests i've ever seen. often side-quests just become grindy and they never have much depth but those issues aren't here.
the quests are beautiful, happy, sad, impactful, and most importantly it doesn't feel like a completely different game from the story when you do them. it blends together so well and you actually feel like the things you do make an impact on the characters and people of the game and the amount of dialogue random Npcs have is pretty incredible. their just fun to do as well, and the rewards you get are great like various upgrades or one where at the end of a side quest line you get the best sword in the game (not counting new game+ gear) so i definitely recommend doing them.
next the music. Jesus christ someone went hard with these. its some of the best **** ive heard in my life and when i finished the game i literally saved like 25 songs to my personal playlist so that should give you a good idea on how good the music is. As for the ending song it will make you **** cry and feel hopeful at the same damn time.
    next is combat.
now for older and newer ff fans no it is not turn based
however it seems like its a little harder to make turn based work in modern games( excluding persona)
i just don't think it would work here with this game and turn based isn't nearly as popular as it once was
it just doesn't seem like what a-lot of modern players want
turn based fanatics can go on about turn based is better or it fits more or it takes way more skill or blah blah games aren't about being good at it or about the game being insanely difficult its about having a fun beautiful experience and this has that in spades.
to keep it kinda short the combat is **** awesome and epic. the combos you can pull of are satisfying and i adore the eikon powers and i'm betting and hoping you will too.
dodging feels satisfying landing strong attacks feels satisfying and its just all around super fun
it never gets boring either, certainly didn't for me.
the boss fights are....this game has the best boss fights of anything ever
towards the ending i got so excited about fighting the final boss i was **** up quick time events cause i was so excited and **** and i accidentally pressed a bunch of wrong buttons. (yes it has quicktime events however they arent annoying and were actually very satisfying to pull off)
it helps that they are paired with the most godly music you'll ever hear so..yeah.
they are satisfying and so damn fun to fight and its also an insane spectacle cause this games graphics are **** unreal. i took so many screenshots throughout the game cause it looks too good and idk how they did this but they did and its perfect.

    now we get to characters
holy hell where to start... how about with clive our main guy.
hes such a good main character youll find yourself loving his interactions and personality from the start.
he actually shows emotion too like hell cry and laugh. albiet not a loud one but he will chuckle and smile frequently and he's very logical cause sometimes you'll find yourself saying his exact line before he can.
every other character is like this too. you'll feel for them you'll love them you'll be happy and sad for them
Clive certainly wont outshine everyone by a wide margin, in fact you may find yourself loving other characters more than him and i certainly wouldnt blame you for that.

for example and lets just use one cause this is **** long enough already

    Cid
from the first line you can tell **** i'm gonna love this guy"
    and you'll be right
everything about him, his character his humor his voice his beliefs and his interactions with other characters is done flawlessly.
the only complaint is i want more with him but wanting more isnt really a good complaint is it
i think it give you plenty especially since his death elevates the story

now cid is not in the game for too long
he dies after the first 25% of the story buut the impact he makes on the characters the world the story, to Clive and most importantly to you, is incredible.
you just have to play it to understand

    now for the ending
now i may have put spoilers but i will never spoil an entire ending but this had me **** crying and it was just so beautiful, the perfect ending to this game and probably anything ever.
the songs that play at the end are literally some of the best songs you'll ever hear and the end of the story will change you.

    so thats my review
    go play this game RN
    its worth every damn penny
just take your time and have fun with it and you wont be sorry

    ps i ain't a professional critic.

Story and cinematic scenes are epic to say the least. Acting is great but there are unnatural and awkward pauses throughout the entirety of the game. Gear is borderline irrelevant as you just craft the next pieces that correspond to the story and guaranteed material drops from bosses. Combat lacks variety as you can just rotate the same skills for maximum DPS, stagger, and damage immunity. There has been a long cry for the mainline series to return to turn-based or ATB at the very least and XVI’s gameplay and combat (or lack there of) have hit this home harder than ever. Trying to be a generic, action RPG won’t get Square Enix there. The heart of the original FF was a party based game similar to Dungeons and Dragons and XVI walked completely away from that. Character diversity is seriously lacking as well. Movies don’t assume the viewer is uneducated and video games shouldn’t either. If you're bad at action games and want something super easy then this is the game for you. Outside of knowing what skills cause the enemies stagger to go down faster it doesn't really matter what combination you choose. Just spam moves and dodge and you'll never see a game over screen. I am ashamed I purchased this game new just adding to undeserved sales numbers. At least we know this game won’t be in contention for GotY. Expand

After two and a half years of waiting I was not disappointed. But on the contrary it exceeded my expectations. I really like the medieval, somewhat gloomy and more mature/serious setting, which you're not normally used to from an FF. From the narrative of the story as well as the interesting characters (with a great voice acting), the detailed graphic world (which is semi open, with sometimes smaller and somewhat straighter and sometimes larger areas to explore, which I think is good - after all, the focus is on the story) to the great cinematic staging and the breathtaking and perfectly fitting music that make the whole thing even more epic. I have the audio and bass really loud when playing because it's just WOW. And I mean you can pet Torgal! I don't even want to get started on the combat system. It's action-packed and incredibly fun. The boss fights are varied and a highlight. Depending on your own fighting style, Clive's skillset can also be adjusted using the numerous skills that you can learn throughout the game. You don't even have to worry about "wrong" builds, you can experiment freely. The skill points can be freely distributed and reset. And the people who hate the combat system on principle and complain and give 0 points just because it's not turn-based and claim it's not FF. I do not understand you. If it's too hard for you, you can always equip rings to make it easier for you.

I can say I'm a big FF fan and have played almost all parts of the series and also love turn-based battles but also action-heavy ones. And if you look at the other parts, the classic turn-based combat wasn't in every part. Furthermore, both in this part and in earlier parts, there is a fantasy world in which magic is worked, chocobos, a party, mogs, crystals, the espers (sometimes less important, sometimes more). In this part they were given an important and novel role. And I think that's a good thing. How can you seriously say it has nothing to do with an FF anymore? Final Fantasy as a series itself is always trying out new things and is constantly changing, then and now. And the (alleged fans) who are building something else simply have no idea about FF if you think it's not a "real FF". Don't be so defiant and get your emotions under control. Get involved in the game and give it a chance, Yoshi-P and his team put a lot of love into it and you can feel it. It would/is a pity that the game suffers because of people like that, which it doesn't deserve at all and it's not fair either, because it's a really great game.

The combat is surprisingly deep. If you don't turn on easy mode, it provides an incredible challenge that can be met with a variety of gameplay styles, from a melee focused parry build to a ranged caster that focuses on dodging. The more Eikons you get, the bigger your potential arsenal becomes.

Graphics are just amazing. There is nothing to say. The visuals are incredible and the vistas sweeping and detailed.

My single complaint is that there is no kind of mini map or map overlay. Either give us full map accessibility or no map.

The FF16 team has also said that they will be patching in additional features at a later date, like disabling motion blur, which should help many people.

And when reading reviews remember this: A game should be rated on what it is, not what it is not.

I want to like this game, but, unfortunately, I can't. For all its spectacle and presentation, it has some very glaring flaws. The high are very high, but the lows are very low.

    Pros:

When the game ramps up, the spectacle is captivating. The game is load, bombastic, and phenomenal. You feel the power fantasy the game is striving to deliver. This game is what God of War used to be, what the new installation of GoW should have been, not the lame duck it has become.

The cast of characters is likeable. Clive, Jill, And Cid are phenomenal characters. I liked spending time with them. I didn't mind not being able to control them. I didn't mind not always having them in my party. The story is very much Clive's story, and Clive is strong enough to carry the narrative on his own.

The game looks amazing. I played it on Frame “Rate mode” over “Graphics” and it still impressed me on how visually stunning the game is. The amount of detail that went into this game makes it worth owning a ps5. This is next gen gaming, and it was about time we got a game that merited the purchase of the ps5, because after 2 years of its release, almost every title we’ve had has been a ps4 port.

    Cons

The story is bogged down with a lot of pointless filler. At first it wasn't a problem, but towards the latter half of the game the filler becomes egregious. It dampens the flow of the narrative. Every major chapter completion is mired down by a pointless fetch quest that does not add any value to the overall narrative. These moments should have been made side quests. For example, looking for a hooker has no impact on the overall narrative and should have been written out of the main narrative.

Side quests are dull and repetitive. Many side quests are "go there, mindlessly kill a few enemies, and come back." While many games follow this formula, the stories tied to them are lackluster. There are very few side quest that had worthwhile interactions. After a while, I just ignored all the talking. I did them only to get for the few rewards they provide.

Hunts are fun. Some of them pose a little challenge, but everything rewards you with material for a crafting system that has absolutely no value, there is little to be gained from them aside from the fun in engaging with them.

There is a lack of enemy variety. While there is good selection of enemies to fight, the more interesting types are locked behind the campaign. The world of Valisthea is an expansive open world, but you do get some small areas to explore. However, most of these areas have the same three types of enemies: bugs, goblins, and chocobos. These enemies don't really pose a challenge. They’re sponges, but that’s it.

The combat system is too plain. The game can feel like a one-button smasher most of the time. I have to intentionally make it challenging for myself since most enemies aren't engaging. The only time the combat shines is when you're fighting a mini-boss or boss battle.

The implementation of an upgrade system baffles. As you progress through the story, the game gives you the gear it wants you to utilize. It drops a lot of upgrade material, but there is absolutely no use for it. There is never a moment you need to worry about crafting or upgrading a weapon or gear. Every boss fight gives you a weapon to "craft". Once you “craft” that weapon, you have no incentive to see the black smith again until after you’ve killed your next boss. Since you can't upgrade these weapons and since they're the strongest weapons between every chapter, you don't have a need to see the black smith. The game should have just given you the weapons.

The crafting system would have been more sense if none of the weapons in the game had attack values, rather different elemental properties or effects. With all weapons being on par with each other, upgrading could have been more engaging, but that leads into another issue.

A lot of the strategy from former titles has been stripped from this game. Let’s say one of the swords would have had an ice element to it. It could have been your go to weapon to fight fire type enemies. Everything is so bare bones.

Every town in the game feels empty. There are lot of towns in the game, but despite how many npcs, there are, most of them feel empty. How difficult would it have been to add shops, smithies, and Inns to these locations? You can’t even rest at an inn to heal your wounds. You either have to die intentionally, or buy potions heal, then buy more potions.

They say there's some challenge in new game +, but new game + only works if the base game is good enough to pull me back into it.

I like Final Fantasy. I want these games to success, but this is a great game to buy on sale.

Please take this into consideration that when people say this game had too much cutscenes and not enough gameplay -- I believe it was estimated to be about 11 hours of cinematic cutscenes. Most reviews that are bashing this as merely watching a movie simply either didn't stick through the beginning, or chose to "skip" the gameplay.

To that point, I felt the sidequests were really great worldbuilding. In fact, side quests towards the end are crucial for understanding how the story wraps up, and it is clear from reading reviews that many people who formulated their opinions simply did not do the quests. Sure the game runs linear through its chapters, but it is by nature of the type of story it's telling. I tried to pace myself to finish all sidequests available before moving on to prevent a pile-up that would cause burnout -- it was very doable for this game. The only thing I did postpone a bit was some of the hunt board, which is basically just going to find a monster out in the wild and slay it.

Content-wise, there were moments of joy and moments of anguish; fists were clenched, and tears were shed. This is an emotional ride that left me wanting more -- and I do feel compelled to play NG+. I'm a fan of how they documented and organized lore within the game and allow you to read about different locations, history, and character profiles. The fact that NPCs change their dialogue as you walk by them through various parts of the game adds much to the immersion. The voice acting was on point.

Where this game could improve: pls, the text can be hard to read sometimes. I was playing on a 65" tv and i'm not sitting too far from it; I can't imagine someone playing on a smol monitor. The weapon/equipment system was also lackluster, though abilities more than make up for it in that you have quite a number of combinations of skill sets to choose from -- making your gameplay unique.

Too easy, even on the highest difficulty I never died.
Of RPGs it has nothing, much less excels as hack & slash, this game is a limbo where it fails at nothing, I give enough only for the fairly accurate story.
The FF saga died with 12, a real shame.

It's as epic as the series ever has gotten in ages! The music is absolutely incredible, followed by equally exhilarating fast-paced action combat, all tied up by an extensive lore, beautiful and breathtaking cutscenes and a gripping story! Again, the dualsense controller haptics implementation is masterfully done. All in all, it is a MUST BUY PS5 GAME!

Didn't like the main ending villain, but the Game of Thrones feel for the first 90% makes up for it. The only problems are that loot is pretty much useless, making exploration also useless. And the sidequests are a MAJOR slow down to the main quest rhythm, specially towards the final mission when all of the sudden you get like 15 quests that take about 4 hours while you should be going after the bad guy that's about to destroy the world. 3. TOO. MUCH. FILLER. The main story has lots of amazing moments, but suffers from too much tedious filler content in between. This makes parts of the story a real drag and makes the pacing very uneaven.

Overall, a big step up from the FF15 trash, but far from the FF golden days (FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, FF12). The FF7 Remake is by far a better game.

The minor frame drops and side quest are the only weak points in the game I would say honestly. But the lore that is provided after completing the side quest are well worth the tedious task. And, if the game is played in Frame rate mode I don’t see the drops. I strongly recommend this game, if you want a gripping tale of self discovery, revenge, and high stakes adventure. Learning how to utilize Torgal properly only extends combos in a satisfying manner. People who bash the combat system in this game "press same button 30 times" just suck at action hack n slash games.
Story Till now the game hasn't missed any story beat for me. Some lines do feel cringe especially when Clive is trying to act traumatic, but the main story is just epic and full of surprises and hype moments World
With GOW R and this game I am glad more and more games are ditching the mindless empty open world formula. Open zones in ff16 have distinct personality and are brimming with details. Towns and cities are lively, dungeons have a unique theme Boss
Boss fights are great and each Boss fight offer a different kind if challenge Eikonic fight This is where game gets hyp since each eikonic fight plays out differently and have their own gimmicks Music
I am convinced that all the best producers work for gaming industry Cons: Unstable performance mode
Do yourself a favor and play this game on graphic mode since it provides most conscience as of yet and it's easier to pull of combos. Resolution drops to 720 p on performance mode Lack of party characters Clive has a deep and varied arsenal of combat mechanics, but being not able to command other party members especially when they have a move set is dissapointing. At least make like Torgal Game can be too easy in the first play through. I don't remember dying at all
Mixed: Side quests are a hit and miss. Some of them are qitcher 3 levels of amazing while other are your usual "collect 10 apples" mmorpg-esq quests In the end all low lives review bombing this game for not being final fantasy enough just prove that they haven't played any old school snes, ps1 era final fantasy game. The side quests can be a bit repetitive but there were still some really nice character moments that happened during side missions. The story is mature and questions the morals of the society that is Valisthea. The time skips also really help you feel how much had happened in Clive's (main characters) life and allows full character development. The relationships he builds also feel natural and genuine because of these time jumps. The story climax had me crying. On a note for those who are wary because of the review bombing I don't feel these are worthy. Yes there is less diversity in terms of skin colour in this game then perhaps in others however I don't feel this is deserved. The story and themes are what are important and those are very mature and raise social issues in their own way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is incredible! I bought a PS5 specifically to play FFXVI, and I have absolutely no regrets.

I was mesmerised the whole way through. The story, music, visuals, and voice acting were all so well done. The combat was super fun, and while it initially felt a little simple, figuring out new and more effective combos as I got further into the game gave it so much more depth.

The world and the characters were brilliant - I really bonded to all of Clive's hideaway family, as well as all of the side quest characters dotted around the world, and I found myself celebrating and mourning every twist and turn of the story with them. Once I had cleared all of the side quests and hunts, and it was time for the final battle, I desperately didn't want to go. It took me most of an evening before I felt ready to leave the hideaway. But holy moly it was worth it - even with the half an hour of sobbing through the credits afterwards.

I'm not entirely sure how I'm supposed to come back down to reality now that I've finished the game.

All of the motifs that make Final Fantasy what it is are present with the franchises trademark reinvention of itself and gameplay that comes with each new entry. It might be missing some of the traditional RPG elements towards the beginning, but by the end of the credits this is debatably my all time favorite in the franchise (Toss up with 7). Hands down the best Final Fantasy in a decade plus, if not the best all time. This is the best Cid of any Final Fantasy game, and imo Clive is the best protagonist in the series. The mature themes are a refreshing and modern take on the franchise. My biggest issues: Elemental magic doesn’t really exist in this game (fire should be strong against ice, etc. They all do the same damage regardless) and the grand amount of crafting materials you pick up throughout the initial play-through don’t go to much use after the midway point of the game even though that’s the majority of rewards from chests and exploration. 10/10 game and the story is gripping and you become invested in these characters and the world. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy XVI takes a lot of gameplay and story inspiration from the likes of the recent God of War games and the Devil May Cry series and it shows. The epic Eikon fights, and the hack and slash combat remind me of these games. I personally think these kind of games are fun, it reminds me a lot of .Hack as well. The characters have a lot of depth, and there are some really raw emotional scenes, and Game of Thrones-esque family and political drama. Clive's and Dion's voice actors especially really impressed me in those moments The side quests also have Clive build a lot of relationships with some important side characters that pay off a little past the halfway point in the game. The awesome boss fights and the mystery of the Eikons were exciting enough on their own for a game, but I think what I enjoyed the most was watching Clive grow as a character. He starts out as a 20 something, brooding, revenge seeking, dark hero, who feels he can only trust himself, and he grows up to understand that there are a ton of things he can't do on his own even with his magic. He builds trust and friendships through sidequests and learns that there are things that everyone can do. I thought this theme of a hero building on people's talents through his relationships and learning to accept help when he needs it subverted the dark hero trope in a really special way. I'd love to see more games set in the world of Valisthea Expand

This one does a great job with combat, world building, and story. Great game and outstanding edition to this legendary series.

Yoshi P novamente salvou a franquia. Com uma jogabilidade inovadora pra série, e co, muitos elementos vindos de FFXIV, o jogo conta uma história envolvente e madura. Seguindo os passos de grandes jogos da franquia, como FFVI

    4. The game is one continuous deserted identical repeating corridor - killed a pack of enemies, killed the boss. Reminds me more of the Diablo series.
The game is incredibly boring and monotonous. The plot is +- ok, some blood, some drama. Good for 14-16 year kids.

Undoubtedly one of the finest Final Fantasy titles in history. This is a shining masterpiece through and through. Exhilarating and fast-paced combat inspired by Devil May Cry. A gripping storyline that is carried by wonderful characters. Yoshi-P, Square Enix's very own GOLDEN KING is the mastermind behind this mainline entry in the series. The genius/madman from Capcom Ryota Suzuki was grabbed by him personally to be the Combat Director. Platinum games and the Kingdom Hearts teams also assisted with development. This is a dream game made by a dream team .

FFXVI not only has an excellent combat system, but its narrative is also on a supreme level. This is one of my personal favorite storylines in a video game and it impeccably captures the themes of brotherhood, family, nobility, redemption, regret, hope and faith. Furthermore, the whole experience is tinged with a cinematic flourish that will leave you inspired.

Trust me when I say that this is not one to miss. After completing the opening segment and witnessing the title card drop, you'll be thanking GOD that you had the privilege to play this game.

Well i have to say for a final fantasy game Yoshi-p dropped the ball on this one the game is good but that's it good nothing more, it is very hollow and overall lacking for a ff game i think ff7 remake combat would have been so much better way to go in this game and when i start to think ff15 is a better game i know something is wrong.

Sincerelly I'm in love with this game. Story is being awesome, its not childish like foster Final Fantasies, the game grown more, has a great battle, you have more and more things to discover and get hyped with development of the plot. Will not be loved by everyone, but nothing will.

But I must say that I HATE quick time events and there is a lot in this game, so, I can't give a 10.

Excellent music and combat. Dialogues and voice actors did and amazing job. The obscure tone is actually great in this FF. Nice game with nice OST and cinematic present skill. I can say it's way better than FFXV in story telling. The Battles are new to final fantasy series and i have no problem with it, we can't always remain same and don't have any innovation. We can get different battle like turn based in old series , action in FFXV , Half action in FFVII REMAKE and also new action play style in FFXVI. It's possibly the most complete new AAA game that came out this year. It has great combat even though it's sadly a bit on the easier side, great boss battles, AMAZING soundtrack and a great story that keeps you on the edge. Pacing is pretty inconsistent at times going from set piece to set piece back to back and then doing filler stuff for an hour after that though.

Yeah, the music, story and graphic are pretty good. But there's maybe five minutes of gameplay between every 20 mins of cutscenes. It's more like an interactive anime with Quick Time Events (in 2023?). Fights are kinda boring and are easy and accomplishable by 1 button spam. Story is ok but it tends to drift from itself and gets dragged on at times. Side quests are weak and boring. With soYeah, the music, story and graphic are pretty good. Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
