    I haven't cried over a video game in a LONG time, but good lord man, this broke me. Final Fantasy XVI is 1000000% my game of the year, and has reinvigorated my love for video games as a hole. It's in my top 10 video games of all-time now. I'm truly thankful to Square Enix for this incredible work of art. ;-;

The game plot is so childish. All the villains are stupid. Very disappointed. The character design is good but not get enough supported in the plot. It is not RPG but I am ok with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Live your life and meet your terms. FFXVI continues with the trend of the saga to always changes, transforms and that is Clive Rossfield. Clive can be anyone of us. That suffers, that has moments of happiness, and seeks to fulfill the goals of his life. A shield, a brother, a Lover, a Friend, a Leader when needed, and even more.

He is the person that demonstrates that even if you are gifted with a great power, that is not relevant because what actually makes us great are the bonds that affiliate us with our goals to pursue. All to pursue an unknown future that is worth with fighting for. With a more tremendous Sacrifice, there is a greater chance to embrace a better future even though it is not visible. I consider that FFXVI innovates in-game story mecánics that should all future RPGs have and for the future FF it should have a bit more of RPG elements.

At the end of a Story, a new one begins.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I'm just after gaining Shiva Eikon powers, before final showdown with Odin and I have to say that.... it was the most boring Final Fantasy in my career. I'm fresh after finishing FF6 and repeating 9. My God... so many things went wrong in this one. Plot was great until Cid's death, then suddenly game lost all its pacing. Dozens of completly random side quests (talk to 1st person, talk to 2nd person, kill something, bring item to 1st person). And there is more and more of those between almost every bigger main mission. Even main mission are all like: run through corridors, valleys, kill every group, 2 mini bosses and main boss. Rinse and repeat. Characters are boring. Jill is there just to be a meatshield and show Shiva from time to time, Clive is so cliché with his "I have to save the world and let people choose their lives". Boss Eikon fights are really good, so is the graphics. Fighting itself is .... meh.... I would rather prefer what they did in 7 remake. As there is absolutely nothing left of rpg tactical thing. FF16 is just Devil May Cry, so if you like action hack and slash mashers you will probably like the game. I'm not even sure if I will have enough will to finish the game. And that's really bad if you have to make yourself finish something that should be fun. Plus for graphics, eikon fights and powers, moogle and first half of the plot. Expand

I don't often give 10's, but in my opinion this game is a masterpiece... I love everything about it, the Characters, the music score (which is phenominal), the story and the gameplay and enjoyable and satisfying combat system are all excellent here. It's rare that a game grabs me like this one has, and i find myselg wanting to keep coming back to it. I hope they make a sequel set in this universe.

Boss battles consist of on the rails QTE nightmares. They do look epic tho, but this is not supposed to be a interactive movie. Sidequest and exploring feel like a chore and reward nothing but crafting materials that you craft 1 thing with at start of chapter then they pileup in inventory by the thousands. Enemies level with each chapter making leveling irrelevant as they stay at your level and you don't feel like you grow in strength. Visuals are amazing if it wasn't for choppy framerate and horrendous blur, the blur got patched tho, still sucked for half the game Animation is horrible reusing the same animation for 90% of the game, zoom in on Clive he waves hand zoom in on NPC shoulder shrug zoom to Clive reaches for camera to giveget item. Main character voice is like the town drunk woke up in the snow to cold to express or speak words instead of mumbling them. Barely showing feelings true game except for some random times in battle. The rest are good voice acting.

First of all, I think people should wait until they actually finish the game before rating the game a 10 or a 0 after only 6 hours of gameplay. So, I'm a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, since first playing FFX as a kid. So it pains me to give this game such a low score. So, I'm a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, since first playing FFX as a kid. So it pains me to give this game such a low score. I thought the series had hit rock bottom with 15, and maybe it technically had, and while the two are very different, I feel like both of them are a low point in the series.

Tl;dr version: The game has incredibly flashy if repetitive combat, with the exception of the eikon fights which are the best parts of the game. The story gets interesting at times, but dull characters don't help make this straightforward story stand out. It's alright as a one time play through, but I don't think it will leave much of a positive impact on the franchise. It will probably go down as a very dull entry in the series.

Longer version: The demo had me hooked on the game, especially with the way it ended. However, that demo hid the worst parts of the game: the pacing and by extension, the side quests. In between the highs of the eikon fights, which are a lot of fun and very flashy, are dull parts where you return to the hideaway and get bossed around by Mid or go around running inane errands for some random npc, even though I'm supposed to be the leader of their whole resistance, but whatever. The side quests are also basically just that. Dull fetch quests, with dull npcs. Sometimes they are interesting, but after running around delivering apples, it was clear they were going to be like that the entire game.

As for the story, it can definitely be confusing at times. The game has a compendium where you can look up terms, people, and places, but until those places or people become major players in the story (which is like halfway through, since the first half focuses on like 2 or 3 kingdoms out of the 6 in the game) their roles in the game's world are kind of confusing. In the final leg of the game, you get an NPC, Vivian, and she has a map and goes through and explains each kingdom's motivations and what exactly they are doing at that point of the game, which is incredibly helpful, it's just a shame nobody does earlier in the game. But that leads me to my next point. Most of the characters are just so dull and they don't really feel that special. I liked Byron and Cid, but everyone else, even Clive himself, are just kind of boring. I've never cared less for characters in a Final Fantasy game than in 15. At least 15 had some cool DLC to flesh out their main cast. You get a glimpse of the main enemy after you get the first eikon, and I thought there would be more interesting developments, but there wasn't really. Yoshida's involvement was so hyped so maybe I was just spoiled by 14's amazing story, although that game had over a decade to develop its plot with amazing plot twists. There's also a lot of stuff that was interesting but never explored, like what about the lands outside of Storm and Ash? Why is Leviathan not there? What the heck happened to the Fallen?

And then, finally, the combat. It's incredibly flashy and cool looking, but the game seems to boil down to: press R1 to doge, hit an enemy until they stagger, then use all your cooldowns at once, repeat. You get many eikon abilities, but you will mostly use phoenix and ifrit abilities the whole game, and near the end once you get Odin, Zantetsuken makes every non-boss enemy a joke. Some eikon abilities feel straight up useless, like Ramuh and Shiva. There are "Eikonic vulnerabilities" which are elemental weaknesses essentially, but it's so inconsequential that you won't even notice they are weaknesses. They also went the FF14 route where you can use fire magic on fire enemies, etc which I felt was weird. Things like weapons, armor, accessories, crafting, and leveling up felt almost entirely pointless. I used like the same 2 accessories the whole game, potion healing up and the one where dodging increases damage from attacks. Things like +10 defense or attack felt like they made no difference, and neither did any new equipment or leveling up. You unlock trials throughout the game which force you to use certain eikons, but I didn't love the combat, so I didn't finish them all. There are hunts which are a nice challenge if you are under leveled. It's a shame because I feel FF7R had the perfect balance of action RPG and classic turn based RPG elements, but they decided to go for style over subtstance with this game.

Overall it's not terrible, but I just don't see any lasting appeal with this game. After I beat the game, I just had no desire to play it. Like ever again. I spoke with a few people who also bought the game, and they feel pretty much the same way I do. It's fun at first but really overstays it's welcome.

But honestly, that's not enough: the combat system is absolutely the very best RPG combat system I've yet to encounter. Never a dull moment, with tons of variety and fun to be had. The animations are superb and the combat flows fluidly and without a hitch in a very fast paced and enjoyable manner. I've played a ton of RPGs and nothing compares to this milestone achievement of a combat system they have here: I absolutely love it! And I can't speak enough to the beautiful graphics (I Play in graphics mode on PS5) and the performance in Graphics Mode on PS5 is good. I won't say it's great as this is quite a demanding game for the PS5 hardware, though I'm sure a modern video card would run it at like 60 + fps without a hitch. The PS5 in Graphics mode runs 30-40 fps I'd say (at least that's how it feels when I play). Again, "Good" performance not "Great" but more than satisfactory for me and doesn't take away from the gameplay. Going into this game I didn't expect I'd love it nearly as much as I do. I'm 20+ hours in, so not too far in, but the gameplay loop, story, graphics, diversity in environments and characters, etc., are all top notch and the boss fights are especially rewarding and challenging. 10/10. This is the best FF game since 10, and possibly the best story and main character of any FF game. The side quests and combat are a huge leap forward from FF15 and even the FF7 Remake. The amount of story and world building that you discover via side quests is enormous. Active Time Lore system should be implemented in every story heavy game. The music is amazing. This is a different game all together: an effort for Square Enix to maximize its sales worldwide as a AAA title. Meaning that it has to let go some of the tropes that has made the series popular to begin with: turn based battles. This, along with FF XV, is the nail on the coffin for that particular mechanics, with the company actually hiring a Capcom veteran to supervise the action sequences. What we have is an enjoyable, albeit simplified mechanics that can be played by those who are not used to action games such as DMC, yet complex enough to be enjoyed at that level. This obviously drew a lot of criticisms from many older fans, hence the 'lower metacritic' scores. However, I do agree with them in some points: this game is uneven. It carries Square's worst traits in the last few years: it's inability to create an open world RPG that is the flavor of today's gaming landscape and its predisposition for them to tell the audience THEIR story, instead of having an audience of 'creating and living' in a story of their own making. This is a linear experience that reminds me so much of FF 13, with characters designs similar to FF XII. The positive side, in term of presentation, Square literally has gone all out and it is an incredibly produced game. You can see that looking at the scope and cost of this project, they literally moved all of their resources here, leaving some projects such as Forspoken, feeling unfinished. However, despite its advancements, it feels literally a primitive game in comparison to Tears of the Kingdom or last year's Elden Ring,, with its focus on emergent gameplay, without sacrificing its narrative. Will it sell millions? For sure. Is it a game changing sequel that will win game of the year? Sadly, it isn't. Expand

Sincerelly I'm in love with this game. Story is being awesome, its not childish like foster Final Fantasies, the game grown more, has a great battle, you have more and more things to discover and get hyped with development of the plot. Will not be loved by everyone, but nothing will.

But I must say that I HATE quick time events and there is a lot in this game, so, I can't give a 10.

I liked it, it was good, but I didn't love it. I really liked most of the characters, but the pacing and flow of the game was not great.
The combat is fun with a lot of ways to play it differently, but the funnest builds aren't necessarily the best ones. I ended up using a sort of super power focused build where I could just play reckless and offensive, which was effective, but kinda mostly just about rotating through abilities and made any combat against groups of enemies trivial.
The story didn't super land for me. It was good and interesting, but the emotional punches were more like emotional taps on the shoulder for me. Like I knew the moments where I should have been crying as I am apt to do in games and movie/shows, etc. but for whatever reason it never really got me.
The structure of the game also feels very much like running MSQ on FFXIV and the side quests feel like the blue quests. Same for the camera direction in non FMV cutscenes. The short in-game scenes when talking to NPCs have like the exact same camera direction and character animations from FFXIV lol.

I still recommend it, but it's kinda a mixed bag. I will say it is like... 70% cutscenes or at least feels like it, so if that isn't your jam, then you might not enjoy it. Its hype moments are super bad ass though, so it was all worth it to me.

I guess anything passes as a Final Fantasy these days. This game goes to prove people will buy crap as long as a big name is attached to it. Shocking performance, story pacing and side quests. The gameplay is so shallow and easy that they might as well have made it an interactive movie experience. Turd of a game, don't care if Yoshi-P name and CBU3 made it.

The source of inspiration of this game is clear and it comes from other series which I love (Game of Thrones, Attack on Titan, Elden Ring...), but still maintaining a Final Fantasy identity. The combat system it's enjoyable, maybe even too easy and forgiving. I also appreciated the brave choice of being a pure action game. Enemies and mechanics are often repeated, rpg elements including gear and crafting is almost absent, but I still had a good time for my 60 hours of gameplay.

Unfortunately there are also all the problems of FFIV, with uninteresting side quests, forgettable side characters, long dull dialogues which don't add anything to the experience, but actually feel outdated, like if a modern title was padded with content from an older MMORPG. In almost every quest you are asked to fetch an object or kill a monster after lengthy tedious dialogues. Most of the characters are bland and uninspired to the point of being almost annoying for their lack of depth, especially in the side quests.

The world is gorgeous to see and I have been particularly impressed with the vegetation richness which was probably also contributing to the framerate drop even in performance mode. I appreciate the connected locations without a proper open world which we have seen too many times, but despite the reduced size of the locations they still feel incredibly empty with no reward for exploration. Loot is practically absent and with no secrets to uncover you have little reason to explore the map. The experience feels very disconnected teleporting continuously from side quest to side quest which makes you miss the sense of journey which was so present in other titles.

The plot has its great moments especially when confronting major opponents and the story overall is well told especially compared to FFXV. That said, the world, its characters and their motivations didn't feel believable and as soon as you look a bit deeper into the narrative it makes less sense and it's hard to feel immersed into it.

It's a title where a player can find extremely high quality content unfortunately mixed with mediocre quests, dull characters, a world that feels empty and undercooked rpg elements.

This game, although did not disappoint me as much as 15, was still a disappointment. Maybe it was my expectation, but knowing the person who did Dragon’s Dogma do the battle, as well as story by the person who did Heavensward, I was expecting more, especially a flesh out story.

The story, for me, is pretty much unforgivable. They promoted it as mature and dark, but what I found was superficial themes and focus on nudity for that “look at us, we are so mature we have r-rated scene”. Instead of Game of Thrones, maybe they should have look into Evangelion more and Akira to have a deeper philosophy, especially since a lot of it is anime inspired rather than some ‘realism’.

The pacing is awful and the game is 80% cutscenes. It is a failure as a game itself. It doesn’t have much customisation or just gameplay. We went from point A to point B, fight a boss, watch cutscene, and repeat. I found myself bored and tired. Theres no reward for exploration as well, no hidden dungeons to tell extra lore. All lores + details that actually add depth and development to the main story are in side quests for some reason. Side quests that the developer said was optional. No sprint button and OMG no auto run for chocobo!? Like we have to hold R2 for the chocobo to sprint. Like why?

I do like the characters but the story beats are awful. I think I can forgive the lack of gameplay but I can’t forgive the story. I feel FF strangers of paradise have a better story and twist than this. The ending is emotional but I cant shake off the superficial storytelling. They should have edited the story / direction of the game more.

Final Fantasy 16 is not a bad game, but it's also not a good game, and crucially, it's everything I don't want from a FF game. Bloated cut scenes, shallow combat, minimal and essentially pointless RPG elements such as leveling up and weapon upgrades and a boring story filled with too many characters that I do not care about.

On a positive note, the game runs well, it's a very pretty game and the music is excellent. In fact the music might be my favourite thing about it. Can't fault it. But that's about all the nice things I have to say about the game.

The gameplay loop for much of this game is as follows; run along an empty corridor for a few minutes heading in the direction of a way point, get to waypoint, cut scene begins. Cut scene lasts for ten minutes and has zero interactive elements. Control is returned so you can smush a handful of pathetically weak baddies and one tank who is also easy, but takes ages to kill... all of this is dealt with by hammering the square button, interspersed with the occasional dodge or use of special power... then back to hammering square while you wait for your special abilities to recharge. Then you get another corridor or cut scene. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

Cut scenes consist of weirdly stiff and awkward character animations, poor camera framing, and bland, overly written dialogue with very little substance. I think the worst thing about the cliched dialogue is how smug it all feels. Bloated, cliche-riddled pseudo-poetic nonsense. Characters you barely know will go on and on about their tedious backstory for way, way too long while stirring music builds in an effort to force you to feel some sort of emotion or connection, with all the subtlety of a brick to the face. Most of the cut scenes in this game are like having somebody grab you by the shoulders whilst screaming "feel something!" directly into your face. I can't say that I appreciated it.

It's a forgettable story about warring nations, magical crystals (seriously Squenix, you can stop with the crystals at this point) and a band of rugged heroes battling to save the people by murdering the **** out of a whole lot of people. It's a bit more complicated than that, but not by a lot. Game of Thrones comparisons can be found all over the internet, probably because of all the scenes with olde worlde maps and little pieces representing armies being moved around by various factions, cut scenes prefaced with "meanwhile, in a far away land..." showing the game's numerous two-dimensional cartoonishly simplistic villains chuckling evilly whilst discussing their painfully dull plans for world domination and power mongering... things of this nature litter the game. Honestly calling it a game feels misleading as so much of it is just watching cut scenes.

There are a million other things that I could rant about (the side quests, item collection, upgrades and leveling, the number of times the game hands control back to you just so that you can press a button or two only to be dRaGgEd BaCk InTo MORE cUt ScEnEs... my god) but I'll refrain. I can't say that I truly hated FF16, because it's a pretty game that functions as intended, and it's obviously well liked by a lot of people, but I was bored whilst playing it and now, reflecting back on it, I'm sad. I really, really wanted to like this game, but I just didn't. I'm probably getting grumpy with old age, perhaps my soul is dying. Who knows? All I know is that I did not connect with this game on any level, and I'm bummed about it. All of the crazy people giving this bland and shallow nonsense a perfect score... I wish I was there with you, drinking the Kool Aid and having a grand old time, but I'm not. I'm going to pour myself some hard brown liquor and maybe download some of those shiny remasters of the first six FF games and play those instead, and pray to the gaming gods that I haven't gotten so old and bitter that I can't enjoy those anymore either. Fingers crossed.

The story and the gameplay are really good. However there are some issues regarding the rythm of the game and the optional content. The main defect of this game are the level of difficulty: the fights are too easy and if you want a more challenge from the enemy, you have to wait until the end of the game.
Another defect could be the almost complete absence of RPG elements:
    - you can't use other party member and even Torgal (the dog) are totally useless;
    - the menu are totally useless and also the equipment you give to Clive, except for the sword
    - no object to grind from specific enemy, neither particular strategy to build for challenge specific enemy
    - the word are amazing, but you can follow only a specific view whit no hidden areas to discover
    - the subquest are not so characterized, so as to become all too similar
I prefer Squarenix tells to the public from the begin that this are an action game, without any role component, instead of giving false hope to all old fans of the saga.

For reference- final fantasy 7, 8, 9 and 10 are my previous favourite final fantasy games- anything after I either didn't finish or found quite… not great. I sort of gave up on final fantasy after finding 12s story less interesting, 13s world corridor like… 15… we dont talk about launch 15. Well, you have played them..

But then they released ff7 remake, and I fell back in love. The nostalgia mixed with epic gameplay and graphics- I was convinced square may be back in the game. After watching playstation access explain how this game had heavy game of thrones references and much more adult themes (and a fight director from devil may cry) I actually did something I haven’t done since CDProject red stole all my faith.., I preordered a game. This game. I have absolutely zero regrets. All I can say after the above is that this game gives and gives until it has no option but to end. Then it carries on. I am so thoroughly impressed with this game I have made a metacritic account to talk about it and to attract more people to this incredible game. Well done Square. Amazing job. Cant wait for FF7r2!

    - the combat feels smooth, customizable and fun
    - the OST is beyond fantastic, elevating the already enjoyable story
    - the Active Time Lore is a great QOL feature that I would love to see more

    Cons
    - side quests are largely generic and meh, the good ones being back loaded before the final mission
    - the pacing suffers at points thanks to the game inventing banal problems for you to solve (Goetz and his trader pass for example)

This might be the coldest I've ever felt about a game before release only for it to blow me completely away. As somebody who played every mainline entry in the series, and somebody who also loves DMC, dropping the RPG genre and becoming an action game was worrying but god damn did the risk pay off.

The combat in this game feels so goddamn smooth and looks so fantastic. What the game lost in the RPG department it gained in ability customization as you can change the way you interact with the combat by swapping your abilities and bases for those abilities at the drop of the hat. This is also helped by the fact that respecing is free of charge which encourages experimentation.

The story… wow. Hearing how cutscene heavy this game was got me beyond excited and boy did it not disappoint. This game is not afraid to take its sweet time telling its story and allowing you to fall in love with the various players in it. And honestly, it is a stand out after stand out.

Dion, Byron, Gav, Tarja, Martha, Quinten, L'ubor, Charon, Otto and more are fantastically designed and directed characters that will never have you confused on who they are and what they want. It truly is a testament to how strong the story is since they and their names don't end up in an incomprehensible mess in my own head.

And when the story decides to be epic, oh once again, it accomplishes that with beyond flying colors. Supported by a heart pumping OST, from the awe inspiring Ikon battles to the quiet character moments, the game never trips up with awkward dialogue or voice acting.

I genuinely had to try to find blemishes but by the end, two have become readily apparent. Besides the final batch of sidequests, most of the side content in this game feels quite generic. And while I get that moments of excitement have to be counterbalanced by moments of quiet respite, sometimes the game goes a bit too heavy handed and trips up its own pace by inventing unimportant trouble that you the main character have to deal with (once again, Goetz and his traders pass).

So yeah, is this game perfect? No just like every other piece of media in existence. But is it a good time? Nope, it is a fantastic time. What a ride to finally play something that feels worthy of the AAA designation. Beautiful new step towards the future of the series.

Some more than others. But this was just a slog to get through. First time I have skipped a cutscene because I just didnt care…

Gameplay was epic in the summon battles. Great in boss battles. Everything else was so easy and boring a 3 year old could beat it.

Graphics. Muddy. Blurry even with blur off! Why do the field areas look like ps3? And the frame drops are reaaaallllyy bad

Sound is great. Music is great in the battles. Everywhere else is generic

World. Again some great inside areas. All the outside areas look like ps3 and blurry. Replay. Never again. I wanted it to be over with how generic the battles were. Such a waste of time. Cant wait to get back to FF7 rebirth.

I really liked the part when old fans got owned by modern game mechanics. But no, in all seriousness, i'm actually really happy that this is what FF is now and will likely win GOTY. Best part is that these old "fans" can't do absolutely anything about it. This actually gives me hope that there's still hope for future of video games. Innovation is always the key.

    Masterpiece!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was very amazed at the graphoc capability of the PS5, but most of it came from cutscenes. FF16 is cutscene heavy and at times it felt as if I was watching an anime rather than playing a game. Luckly, its a very well told stroy and intersting storyline to follow. I was sad to see some gre
at characters killed off lime Cid and Joshua, but the MC, Clive, is a complete badass. Maybe too overpowered. The final fight felt like when the MC suddenly is more powerful than god himself and felt too easy. The map is very intersting to explore and many variety of enemies and sidequest, but some parts are just ehh. Waloed is just a empty rock with nothing to give and its the final area of the game. It was very disappointing nonetheless. Some sidequest just felt like walking around and talking to diffrent npc with no real significance other than feeling like you're helping the world and building up Clive's reputation. The other characters of the game felt unique and intersting like Cid, Jill, Gav, Joshua, Torgal (ofc) Mid, etc. The cast is amazing just wish you could fight alongside more of them. As a game in general, its very well made and allows all types of players to experience the game how they want to. At times it felt like this game was designed to be paired with the new access controller beacuse of the many rings you can equip to make the game "easier" to play. You can always just not use the rings and play the game as intended and the many combinations of attacks kept every fight interesting and a bit challeging. Overall the game is great with a few thing it could improve on, but still a game I would recommend to anyone who likes a good story with a dark tone.

Exploration is non-existent, the devs outright lied about the story dungeons being "expertly-crafted" when they're literal hallways. RPG elements are barely even present at all and the combat simply revolves around spamming your cooldown abilities as much as possible. The difficulty is insultingly easy to the point where you have to actively be trying to die in order for story bosses to kill you.

I am a long time FF fan and I played many other action, rpgs, and action-rpg games. FFXVI is a good game but it has many core fundamental flaws that prevented me from giving it a higher score. I already wrote this before but got the 403 error, thanks metacritic, I apologize if you're reading this twice.

    Flaws Include.

    1. Easy difficulty with little to no challenge even on action mode. The mobs of enemies are just punching bags that barely do anything. They don't dodge or block and barely attack, some have a guard but that's easily circumvented. The enemy variety is small, you fight the same scorpions on different locations and every nation has a big guy with a big hammer or axe. The combat gameplay is amazing but there really is no incentive to make the best combos or to improve on them like in the game this was inspired by, DMC.

    2. Little to no itemization. You upgrade your sword very easily, and it's always a minor/flat increase like +5 damage/stagger. All the accessories mostly decease cooldown or increase damage of eickon ability, the only cool accessory is the berserker ring which actually does something. Your belt and wrist guard are no different to your sword, it's all defense and vitality increase. The only thing you can customize are your eickon ability and you can only really upgrade them once to improve them. The other upgrade is just to move it to another slot. Every battle gives you a lot of materials to upgrade or craft. It's very easy to get your best in slot gear, no thinking required.

    3. No RPG system. There are no buffs or debuffs in this game. Get hit with bad breath? Well it only does damage. No poison, haste, stop, paralyses, doom, etc. No elemental wheel. No way to strategize and exploit enemy weakness. All you do is just wail on them with your sword until stagger breaks, use limit break, hit them with all of your abilities, rinse and repeat.

    4. Too many side quests. At first the game starts you with only 2 or 3 in the early game which is fine but then amps up the frequency. Before the final boss I had more than 10 side quests that popped up. This really ruined the pacing. Near the end it felt like an MMO and trust me I played quite a few, you start by picking everything up at once, skip dialogue/cutscene, go here, kill that, collect this, go back to npc, accept reward. And some side quests felt meaningless, they could've been taken out and some MSQuest could've been sidequests.

    5. Quick time events are meaningless. The QTE are cool but it pauses the game for like 5 or 6 seconds just to press one button. There is no skill required and it just ruins the flow of battle. Kingdom Hearts II and older God of War games did it better. Those scenes would be better if it didn't have them so I could grab some snacks and enjoy the awesome Kaiju battles instead.

    6. No reason to explore map. Only things worth finding are the notorious marks or eickon trials. Only chest in the world just give you materials you already have or could just buy from an npc.

There are smaller nick picks I have like your chocobo is just faster walking, no chocobo racing or treasure hunts like in FF9. No mini games to change up gameplay or just to relax like prior entries. Party members don't show up in side quests or respond in any way like in Mass Effect.

Don't get me wrong, FFXVI is a good game. I love the story, combat, characters, dialogue, eickon battles and set pieces. But I was so disappointment by it that I was not having fun halfway through the game. I had to force myself to get to the end, it felt like a chore. I was gonna give it a lower score but Soken's music is magnificent like always. I will definitely get the album when it comes out. Anyways, thank you for reading.

Playing as clive the protagonist who isn't just some edgy and all cool dude, he's real soft deep inside and he feels most human than any other video game protagonist.

    Pros :
The first half was addicting as hell, not saying it fell of at the second half but just wasn't at the same level as the first. First, The SOUNDTRACK I can't begin with how good it is literally 10/10. Orchestral music and choir is always good.

GAMEPLAY is fun 10/10 and once you get all the abilities it just gets better. I finished the game but I still want to play again to try out a different build. It gets boring a bit but that's because I was trying to 100% the game so it kinda feels repetitive at the end (like every other game). The eikon battles are one of most cinematic boss fights I've ever seen in a video game. Better than any fromsoft games or GOW and that says a lot. The boss fights are literally the reason u should get this game. Dungeons are kinda bland like each dungeon has 3 mini bosses and 1 major boss. Dungeons are kinda small and all look the same the loots are crappy no reason to explore at all other than a THOUSAND of the same crafting materials that u probably won't use. And 2 gil(the currency). Crafting sucks here cause you'll probably only craft the purple gear cause their materials come from boss drops while they give u a lot of green gear recipes which are usually crappy.

STORY wise 8/10 , if you're into politics, war and slavery, you would love this game. I couldn't really follow at times but that's where ATL (active time lore) comes in. In the middle of the cutscenes, whenever you feel lost you can pause the game and activate ATL and it really helps explaining the lore. Some warning though, I've heard a few who said ATL spoiled some major part of the story which shouldn't have happened yet. I guess a developer oversight. In between major boss fights are quite boring main quests. I understand its for the world building and the lore but I find myself getting sleepy with the dialogue which u probably shouldn't skip. I wanted to just get it over with and just rush to the next boss fight.

    Cons :
The side quests 4/10 - Oh boy, there were some sleep inducing side quests. Just talk to npc A then B then to C. You kill some monsters and u go back to A. They never really stray from this formula even until the end of the game. Especially where they literally gave 10+ of these kinds of quests before the final boss. I was trying to 100% the game but I couldn't really bear the sleep inducing quests anymore and was just skipping through the dialogue. But there are really some emotional ones where u get to know more of the main characters. Some tearful moments too.

The world 5/10 - Kinda empty? In the beginning you couldn't really venture out aside the main quest locations but it does open up quite abit further in the game but not too much. There were not any memorable locations here cause they feel kinda samey idk.

The CHARACTERS are 7/10 some main characters they really should have fleshed them out more. Other than Clive, the characters feel a bit bland? The party members are real quiet in battle and they disappear during non main story quests. Some side characters like the leaders of each town were just downright boring. I hated doing their quests but you can't skip these cause they're main story quests.

Overall 9/10. I LOVE this game the boss fights are just the best in video game history. Thats probably the reason u should play the game. Some cons but the pros outweighs the cons immensely.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Normally in real life I am paid to run errands. I paid 70USD buying this game and I have the feeling that most part of the game is about going from A to B to speak with someone or get something and then return to A to finish the quest with and extremely bad designed npc (those faces, those movements when leaving tbe conversation...)
I'm a die-hard FF fan. Where are the magics? Where is the looting/item customization? Why the only freedom I have to make Clive stronger is to go after any quest to the blacksmith and buy the mandatory sword? I'm an almost at the end of the game but it is taking effort to turn on the PS5 and keep playing. I think I have died once so far so where is the challenge? In my mind FF games where about leveling up, finding better gear, exploring, using magics and state ailments. I understand the new direction, more action focused, but not at any price. It is 2023 and I had to download FFVI to play it at the same time because 16th makes it really difficult to be motivated. I got to the point that if it was possible I would kill all those people in the hideaway. All of them. All of them so woke, so good people. Come on.

Benedikta and Kupka where very nice villains, but they leave very quickly. The eikon battles are like a film, you mostly do not need to do anything at all. The world is stunning, that is true. And the story as well, credit where is due
