This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I recommend to play this game twice. Once story based, and then the Final Fantasy mode. In the story mode you’re going to experience the world of FF16. Do every side quest. It’s really interesting. Then in Final Fantasy Mode you can experience the games main story line only. It’s great and extremely sad. It’s literally a story about people fighting to live their lives as they want to. There are only a few happy moments for them. The rest of the story is just sadness and death. I experienced this more, while playing the second time and only playing the main story quests. That’s why I recommend it.

The gameplay is great and it only gets demanding in Final Fantasy mode. But with new game plus it’s still doable. A great game. Especially for people who have never played a Final Fantasy Game before. And for people who loves game of thrones.

Final Fantasy XVI is a 2023 action role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix. It is the sixteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, and was released for the PlayStation 5 on June 23, 2023.

The game is set in the fictional land of Valisthea, which is divided into six realms blessed by Mother Crystals. The story follows Clive Rosfield, the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, as he embarks on a journey to avenge his father's death and stop a mysterious group known as the Ifritian Order.

FF16 features a real-time action combat system that allows players to control Clive and his party members in battle. The system is designed to be fast-paced and fluid, and allows players to chain together combos and abilities. The game also features a variety of weapons and abilities that can be customized to suit the player's playstyle.

In addition to its combat, FF16 also features a strong story and cast of characters. The story is dark and mature, and deals with themes of revenge, loss, and redemption. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the voice acting is top-notch.

The game's visuals are also impressive, with stunning environments and character models. The soundtrack is equally impressive, with a mix of orchestral and electronic music that perfectly complements the game's setting and tone.

Overall, Final Fantasy XVI is a great game that offers a fresh take on the series. The combat is fast-paced and fun, the story is engaging, and the characters are memorable. If you're a fan of action RPGs or Final Fantasy in general, then you should definitely check out FF16.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the game:

    Pros:

    Fast-paced and fluid combat system
Strong story and cast of characters
    Stunning visuals and soundtrack
    Plenty of customization options
    Challenging difficulty modes
    Cons:

Some technical issues (e.g., framerate drops)
Side content is not as engaging as the main story
    Lack of post-game content
Overall, Final Fantasy XVI is a great game that is sure to please fans of the series and action RPGs in general. It has a lot to offer, including a fast-paced combat system, a strong story, and memorable characters. If you're looking for a new RPG to sink your teeth into, then FF16 is definitely worth checking out.

The game is great. A good return to form for Final Fantasy. You can argue that the story is a bit bland, but that's what classic FF did, and it's not bland, but predictable at points, wich is not inherently bad.

The gameplay, music and graphics are amazing, so it's a great entry pointing on the right direction

First the game length I completed the story in 60 hours, with side quests and hundreds at about 66 hours. Currently in the 100th hour in New Game plus in Final Fantasy mode. That out of the way let’s get started with the story. It is probably one of the most captivating stories in the franchise, it keeps you invested from beginning to end. Along with the story, the characters are just as captivating. Clive is probably the most surprising character because from the outside looking in you think he’s the typical Square Enix protagonist who has this chip on his shoulder but in reality while he holds so much resentment for the sins he’s committed he is still a hopeful character that pushes on for a better world and cares for the ones close to him. Cid is the most fun character because of his quick wit. Then there is Jill who you know she has done bad things and Clive’s road for atonement is as much hers as it is his. They game even goes as far as making you hate a character because the character is supposed to be hated as well as characters you feel sorry for because of the position that they are in. The game is linear storywise, which isn’t a bad thing and the world being zoned instead of being completely open world really helps. One big problem with open world games is you get the story started then next thing you know you fell off the beaten path completely. Early in the game your map is more of a pathway but it does open up fairly quickly and the zones are pretty large. The combat system starts out restrictive but once you open up more Eikon abilities you have more to play with and when you master abilities you can mix and match your abilities no matter what Eikon you have assigned. The Eikon’s are the massive summons of the game and while you can only use Ifrit in the Eikon battles you are able to drawn upon 8 different Eikon abilities throughout the game and you draw your magic from those abilities. The use of the Eikon abilities is similar to that of the Eidolon abilities in Final Fantasy IX where you use their ability. Side quests can be a mixed bag. Yes there are quite a few fetch quests which in modern day RPGs that’s what they are but there are some that land you some items that you may want to make it through your journey. But that being said all the side quests do add important context to the world and it’s people. As far as creatures go you do get a lot of you classics like Bombs, Chocobos, Ahrimans, Adamantoise, Malboros, dragons, and so on and so forth. As far as difficulty it falls in line with the final fantasy franchise so don’t go in expecting souls like difficulty. As far as gear it’s your typical final fantasy style where you get better equipment, you don’t use the other equipment unless you reforge it. Some of the accessories buff your stats or lower the cooldown time for Eikon abilities. Finally the score for the game is magnificent. Find the Flame makes the hairs stand up every single time I hear it. I put it up there with classic final fantasy themes like One-Winged Angel, Liberi Fatali, Apocalypsis Noctics, The Red Wings theme, Terra’s Theme, and the Final Fantasy theme. Hands down Final Fantasy XVI can easily be considered a contender for game of the year and if you have a PS5 I highly recommend picking it up. Expand

The story and the combat flow smoothly and most - not all - side quests are pretty interesting; they can give a dive on the past of some of the side characters. I took a point off as the camera moves a little quickly, or is slightly jerky, or something... Can't quite put my finger on why, but something there doesn't quite sit right. Plus I love souls games, and while the fighting mechanics are fantastic here - they aren't quite up to souls level. Close though - which is a BIG compliment.

Ff16 is a feast for the eyes and the heart, the game starts quietly but from the first eikon onwards it becomes grandiose, spectacular! The boss battles are something never seen before, perhaps only God of war reaches such a graphic marvel, but here are also the amazing music that makes everything epic! The combat system is fun and devastating! And while some may miss the turn-based combat, this game is 100 percent Final Fantasy, a true fan won't be disappointed! However, it has 3 flaws, which if they were improved in the next chapter we will have perfection. 1. Monsters encountered during exploration really too simple 2. Motion blur can not be disabled 3 management of 'equipment of the character too Basic. For those people worried about how much different this game is to past games, don't worry about that. Final Fantasy is a series that's been known to make drastic changes to it's formula over the mainline entries and this is no different. It's not a turn based battle system anymore but that shouldn't matter in the long run if the gameplay that's here is good and it's great. The action styled combat is terrific. With tons of battle options and things to do, it's really fun, especially the Eikon or summon fights that serve as easily the biggest draw in my book to get people to play this game. The story is very well done, albeit with the caveat that it dives deep into a few tropes that I personally HATE towards the end of the game. But it's not afraid to have a heavy dose of a level violence that surprised me alot when compared to past games as well as depicting multiple sex scenes that, while not graphic, were here. In past games, it was a wonder if the characters even knew what that word meant but it's very clear here. The influence of Game of Thrones is so beyond obvious it might as well not even be said, but I love that they weren't afraid to go the extra mile here for a more mature experience. The characters feel realistic and most of the voice performances were outstanding, most particular the actor for the main character Clive. It really brought me in to the experience. My main gripe, outside of the tropes, is that the middle portion of the story can drag badly after one of the most climatic fights in the whole game and that the experience feels more linear then I was hoping for with a lack of side quests until the very end of the game when they stuffed it to the brim with them. Overall this is an experience that I will recommend to every RPG and Action game fan I can. Do not let the people complaining about this "Not being their Final Fantasy" dissuade you from playing one of the best FF games ever. It's probably in my top 3 FF games ever, with it being a few terrible tropes away from it getting a 10 for me. Expand

I know a lot of people are probably disappointed that final fantasy has moved pretty far from its original roots as a JRPG. I'm not one of those people. While there is some work to be done with this new direction, I do feel it has breathed new life into the series.

The combat is absolutely phenomenal. In my opinion, It's probably in the top 5 combat systems of all time. Ryota Suzuki called FF16 his masterpiece, and boy oh boy does it show. I don't think I have had a larger smile across my face during some of the fights in this game. It's visceral, it flows well, and it FEELS good.

The story and characters are also fantastic. As someone who couldn't relate as well with the last few protagonists of the final fantasy series, Clive, Cid, and many other characters were EXTREMELY relatable. The world and characters are complex, dark, grim, and MATURE. This is probably the best aspect of this new Final Fantasy and its a HUGE step in the right direction. I hope they continue down this path with future releases.

Now, the bad. I agree with a lot of complaints regarding the overall "corridor" feeling that this game has. This game is MAJORILY on rails. There is SOME side quests in previous areas that you've visited, but you will almost always be experiencing the game exactly how everyone else is. This is where both FF16 and the FF7 remake suffer, and its where Square Enix needs to put their attention next.

As someone who loves open world games, Final fantasy doesn't need to be open world. The game doesn't need to be fully open world. It does, however, need to FEEL LIKE A WORLD. Final Fantasy 16 feels like a series of corridors and scripted events, one after another. I think a system like Dragon Age 3, where you have maps of semi open world environments, would work well for Final Fantasy. This is absolutely where the game suffers the most. Square Enix needs to find better ways to break up the corridors.

Overall I am loving this game. It's a huge step in the right direction and It will attract a wider audience. I'm hoping we see more mature Final Fantasy games in the future.

If you are a fan of the series you will find yourself feeling nostalgic quite often. There is no way this game deserves the 0's the idiots rate it. Sorry people but get over the fact that it's not turn based anymore. Guarantee most of the 0 raters haven't even played it. Some are very interesting and cover the lore bits that are not told in the main story but answer a lot of burning questions I had in the back of my mind. Combat can be either button mashing or very complex as you wish it to be. The game doesn't really force you to 'git gud' in the first playthough difficulty though which is quite unfortunate. Only certain optional challenges make you to rethink the way you play and even that they are still not punishing enough. Maybe this will improve in the new game+ difficulty which is actually why the game isn't a 10 for me yet. Locking harder difficulties behind one playthough is always a no for me. The game can still improve too on the optimization front. I have some framerate drop in small corridors which makes zero sense but it's there I suppose because the smokes from these stupid braziers. Framerate mode still needs patching and motion blur needs to go. (I am aware that they are planning to add an option to turn off motion blur but it is not here right now as I'm writing.)

Anyway, 9.4/10. would buy any story DLC.

He matado a muchos jefes usando la misma estrategia

Honestly, I give it a 7, but to counter the zero score trolls I've bumped it up to a 9.

The game is a bit slow, dry dialogue at times, and an overuse of cutscenes, but later in the game it really picks up and the story gets a bit more personal. I enjoyed the 52 hours I got out of it and will likely play it again someday.

The combat is fantastic, though some might yearn for a greater level of challenge. They went all out on the soundtrack. Deviating from the open-world formula, this game sidesteps the pitfalls of excessive content, providing a more focused and refined adventure.

While its strengths are undeniable, there is a longing for more gameplay variety, such as engaging minigames and puzzles. Additionally, expanded customization options overall and especially for party members would have added depth to the gameplay experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been looking forward to this game since it was announced. I hoped it would be 2023 game of the year. I still think it deserves GOTY and I loved my experience, especially with the boss battles, combat, and characters. However, there were some unexpected low lights, mainly about story (unexpectedly) and game systems (especially crafting).

it is a game that was built "in scope" and on time. Many of my wishes are for systems which could've likely been added with infinite time and resources. But game companies don't have those, so I can appreciate that. However, I did not expect to be disappointed by the story in the way I was, so that is really unfortunate. Still it has one of the best game stories I've played in recent memory and I really applaud it for that! I want other game devs to take the story in this game as inspiration; I just had maybe unfair levels of expectation for the story which I feel did not totally play out.

Voice Acting - 10/10, honestly, I'd say 11/10. IMO there has never been better voice acting in a video game, period. Every actor gave themselves to their role, you could feel their pain, happiness, sadness, hope.

Music - 10/10, There were no misses for me on the music. Every track was beautiful, emotional, fitting! The music was gorgeous. Soken NAILED it, you can feel his and his team's passion and talent.

Eikon/Boss Battles - 10/10, The spectacle of these battles is something I've always dreamed of in video games. It's like dreams coming to life. Beautiful, immersive, exciting. Every Eikon battle, I felt delighted and a little anxious. Every single one kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was next! I LOVED these, I could never wait for the next one, what a treat!

Characters - 10/10, Everyone is so well realized, even the most basic NPC in the Hideaway has something to share about themselves with Clive. The characters are deep, relatable, fun to interact with, interesting to learn about. I also think the character based side-quests are really effective.

Combat 9/10 - The combat REALLY worked for me. As a person who loves FF eikons, enjoys action combat, but also enjoys simple, easy to understand systems, this combat system felt satisfying and fun. I have never experimented more with different builds mid-playthrough in a game. Normally I to find the most efficient way to engage with combat systems and don't experiment much, but this one encouraged me to try new abilities and I really enjoyed that! The only thing I wish is we could've used our ability points to customize the companion characters' fighting styles.

Side Quests - 8/10, I think some will say there were too many side quests, but I'm not sure about that. I think there was a good amount. The dev team said they wouldn't just "make you kill 5 wolves for no reason" and they definitely delivered on that. Every side quest had a reason and they were effective for world building. I would've preferred more focus on the main characters in the side quests rather than side NPCs like Quintin, Martha, and L'ubor. Side Quests to help you learn more about Barnabas or Ultima for example could've helped and I didn't really care for those 3 hub characters.

Game Systems - 7/10, This 7 sadly pains me, because Active Time Lore is a huge for me, I think every story game should have this. I read every entry multiple times. To the low lights: a massive low light for the game is crafting. It's really disappointing. As a person who loves to explore and see every inch of the map, at first I was excited that there were so many items to also collect. But there is no purpose for the literal 1000 bloody hides you will collect, despite helping Mid make a workshop. I was so excited, maybe we can use the Workshop to do projects for the hideaway? But no. The game really needs some use for all the crafting items you are given. The forge is ok, but all of the weapons are just straight upgrades. I wish there were some options, even if basic "make this one to do more will damage", or "make this one to gain more LB charge", IDK something unique. it was just +stats each time. I really think there was a missed opportunity to use the crafting items. Either make gear for your party members or make cosmetic items for the hideaway, something, anything!

Story - 7/10, it's an epic FF tale and every aspect of the story related to the Eikons was compelling. Demo story - 10/10. Game story through Bahamut - 10/10. After, it starts falling to 6/10. I hated Barnabas and Ultima and they never paid off as villains for me. it is hard to relate to either of them. I had higher expectations for the villains as a CBU3 fan. I left the game adoring Clive, Jill, Joshua, Torgal and Dion. I did every side quest, and upon doing that and heading for Origin, I had real hope that we could give these characters peace. To end on tragic ambiguity was just gut wrenching. Did you have to? It was such painful ending that it did sour the journey for me a little.

The combat system has the incredible property of being easy to pick up but a ton of mastery is required if one wants to dig deeper; unfortunately true difficulty only comes up in NG+ or arcade mode. Still it's deeply satisfying.
The OST is as usual godly, Soken is quickly ascending in my personal pantheon of musicians.
The graphics are nothing mind blowing but the artistic direction is incredible.
And this was the goal, a good and satisfying story, relatable characters and fun combat: a complete hit.
Final Fantasy 16 falls flat, unfortunately, on mainly two other aspects: side quests and RPG systems.
Side quets are not overall "bad": they do what I care the most, the world building, and they do it perfectly. In fact I highly suggest to do them, because they expand the world a ton. But they are mechanically uninteresting. A minigame or something different from the usual game play would have a huge impact.
The RPG systems instead are a complete failure in my eyes. There is a levelling system and stats, they have impact sure, but you don't have control over them, there is no choice to be made and thus no consequences. An example: on the "offense" side you have "attack" and "stagger" as stats, but ALL weapons have the same value for both, this means I'll always equip the best weapon available and I cannot "build" a "heavy attack" or "heavy stagger" Clive. Same idea goes for belts and bracelets regarding HP and defense. The accessories, on the same vein, do not impact stats heavily, so you end up equipping the ones that give extra XP, AP, etc. This, by consequence, kills the utility of crafting and looting/exploring, especially because you naturally get the best equip by simply playing the story.
Fortunately this is an easy fix since is mostly dependent in on tweaking stats, and I hope CBU3 makes a balance pass on items.
The RPG part basically comes down to Eikon and skill selection: all are different and interesting, but without other layers like elements or statuses, they do not have the impact they could have had in a more complex system.
This is not a dealbreaker but with better systems in place, the game would ascend to the masterpiece level.
Given the quality of the main goals the dev had in mind, it would be criminal not to still give 9 to this title: I enjoyed the ride very much and it landed in my top#3 FF tier list easily. If you pick this up, just do not expect deep RPG systems and you'll enjoy it too.

The action sequences are some of the smoothest in the genre, making it easily one of the best action games on the market. Every strike, dodge, and combo feels fluid, granting players a delightful sense of control and immersion.

Progression in Final Fantasy XVI is both intuitive and logical. The journey of character growth and skill acquisition is mapped out clearly, ensuring players always have a sense of direction and purpose. This clear path forward, paired with the game's intricate storyline, makes for an engrossing experience from start to finish.

However, no game is without its flaws. While the Eikon battles are nothing short of epic - grand in scale, rich in detail, and heart-pounding in intensity - they come with a caveat. These confrontations, despite their cinematic brilliance, often feel scripted. The sense of real danger or potential for loss is somewhat muted, giving a feeling that there isn’t a genuine risk of failure. It's a minor blemish on an otherwise stellar combat system, but noteworthy for those seeking the unpredictability and challenge often associated with boss battles.

Visually, Final Fantasy XVI stands as a monumental achievement in the realm of gaming graphics. Every frame, every scene, and every character design exudes meticulous attention to detail and artistic flair. The landscapes, both vast and intimate, don't just serve as backdrops; they breathe life and history, drawing players into a world that feels as real as it is fantastical.

But it's not just the visuals that captivate; the auditory experience is equally mesmerizing. Masayoshi Soken, a name synonymous with musical brilliance in the gaming world, has outdone himself with the soundtrack for Final Fantasy XVI. Each track, from the stirring battle anthems to the poignant, melancholic melodies, elevates the gaming experience. Soken's compositions don't just accompany the narrative; they tell a story of their own, making the journey through the game a deeply emotional and memorable one.

Together, the graphics and music of Final Fantasy XVI create a harmonious blend, making the game not just a playable adventure, but a cinematic journey of the senses.

Absolutely loving this game. It’s a linear, story-driven, game and that’s exactly what I’m looking for right now after open world burnout. I’m a huge fan of the story, which I think will make or break this game for people (if you don’t like the story, you probably won’t like this game).

Something about this game makes me nostalgic of my early gaming days in the late 90’s early 00’s.

Something about this game makes me nostalgic of my early gaming days in the late 90’s early 00’s. It’s hitting all the classic video game notes. Just a great overall experience, focused on story and epic moments.

I find the combat very satisfying as well. Im getting pretty good at stringing together pretty awesome combos. There’s quite a bit you can do with the combos that keep things varied and fun. The visuals and sounds really enhance the combat. Feels very impactful.

Voice acting and cinematics are absolutely top notch and the game is chock full of epic moments.

I’m playing in quality mode because performance doesn’t hold 60 fps. That’s my only knock on the game. That being said, the 30 fps in quality mode feels good (and looks incredible), especially during combat. The motion blur when looking around can be a little rough.

I am about 20 hours in the game and I can't wait to turn my PS5 on again, counting minutes to finish my job every day, sleeping thinking in the game, avoiding social life to play the game... such a few games makes that happen with me. I removed all the helping rings to make the game more realistic and the combat is awesome. I would give it a 10 if it had fishing (I loved that in XV) and also the performance mode needs minor improvements in the frame rate. I totally left my Zelda in the middle of the story and will not go back there until I finish this game. I will update this review once I finish the game, may take a while... Expand

Fantastic game, my only complaints are sometimes the frame rate drops and in some areas the graphics looked out dated. Other than that phenomenal game. 9/10

First Final Fantasy game I have played and I'm loving it.
Combat is great and the music is fantastic, only done with 1/3 of the story but so far it's great.

Whilst the map is quite linear, this actually feels refreshing given how bland open worlds have become and how majority of developers don't understand how to create a unique open world that isn't riddled with meaningless endeavours and horrendous side quests.

Whilst the map is quite linear, this actually feels refreshing given how bland open worlds have become and how majority of developers don't understand how to create a unique open world that isn't riddled with meaningless endeavours and horrendous side quests.

The story has some of the best character development I've seen in recent years. Side quests start of basic as you start off basically putting you in Clive's shoes to see if you want to commit to belonging, but if you do the rewards get better and better with unlocking top tier swords, increasing potion count, unlocking accessories which can be used to modify actions, moves, damage and evasion in combat, to unlocking materials for upgrading weapons. One of the biggest complaints I've seen is the claim that it's not an RPG (Role playing game) yet by definition you're playing as Clive who grows emotionally, takes on responsibility, grows in strength whilst supporting those around him, all of this takes place in the span of around 20 years. With some characters changing for the better, others for the worse.

On top of that Eikons abilities can be upgraded and even well into the game 60+ hours I was still unlocking abilities not tied into the tier unlocks in the menu. This replaces the standard in other RPG's (Particularly in Final Fantasy games) where you unlock abilities / strengths / perks in weapons, here it's Eikon abilities.

Music is phenomenal, I even brought the Ultimate edition that comes with 8 cds.

There's actually a lot of content in the game from unlocking character bios, unlocking music that can be played at the hideaway, arcade mode, Eikon Challenge gateways, Hunts, side quests, tomes, observing the political landscape bios etc.

Boss battles (Eikon Battles) are possibly the best I've seen in a long, long time and are actually rewarding.

The story is told in a way where you can empathise with Clive's cause and want to accomplish his story so that the world is rid of the prejudices and evil that plague not, it's not just about ridding the world of the shadow evil figure. This always makes for a great story when you have to deal with the prejudice that the character has to deal with because you actually grow alongside the characters.

Combat is amazing and has multiple variations that players can go about, some critics complained all they had to do was hold a button, whilst failing to mention that this was an accessory they had equiped.

Progressing through the story and map, at times I'd get to a point where I think "I've seen all I have to see in this" then something new happens. The best way to explore the maps though would be when you have the green marker for a side quest show up, as discovering the full map in the areas before the side quests become available kinda makes the world somewhat empty, but once that side quest becomes available that area is given meaning.

Definitely looking forward to what is in store for the future of FFXVI, even though I'm just over 60 hours in, I'm still be amazed at what I'm finding and seeing.

Amazing graphics, Exciting free-flow combat and Breathtaking Eikon boss fight... Despite many shortcoming, it's still a enjoyable Final Fantasy game.

    Pros

    - Combat gameplay: it's new, it's refreshing and it's spectacular. Fat plus, that outweighs many minuses. - Game tries to be comfortable and flexible for player in every aspect. Starting from difficulty, ending with descriptions of everything in the game. - Again, game has many spectacular episodes: starting from cut-scenes, ending with boss fights. Sometimes you do not fully

    - Again, game has many spectacular episodes: starting from cut-scenes, ending with boss fights. Sometimes you do not fully understand of what is going on the screen, but, who cares, just press square. :) Many cut-scenes, i like cut-scenes.
    - Interface is ok.

    Cons

    - IMHO, main story is too long, too many side quests. Structure and content of side quests are simular and repetitive.
    - I like to explore, and game do not encourage you to do so
    - Mob hunting, no direct mark like in sidequests. I think perfect game do not require you to google, this activity require you to google rather often. It's tiresome to run through whole location in search of the monster, especially when you do not have any other incentives to do so.
    - Pathos of NPCs.

    Neutral

    - Story is interesting to follow, but... it has novelty is under the question, main motive of story is somewhat similar to FF7 (doh...). From logical point of view of NPC behaviour and reasoning not everthing is perfect also.
    - Semi-open world. It's hard to build good open world. And you do not need to, to make RPG good.
    - Hero progression and abilities: are simple and straightforward. Many abilities to choose from, but my top was unambiguous.
    - Some characters are charismatic, some are not not: for example, main hero.
    - Soundtrack is... meh

Overall, game is great and I advice you to try it, it's a new level in terms of spectacular combat and cut-scenes in action RPG.

Final fantasy XVI is a very refreshing experience for the series.

The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is very cool, much better than its predecessor and the history it's like a spin-off of the Game of Thrones.

I will give a 9 just because the fights are so nice and do not happen all the time.

Great mature story, amazing and complex combat, likeable characters and many side activities make this game a great deal for your money. It took me 60 hours to finish this game and I will surely come back to beat this game on a higher difficulty setting. What is also important for some people is the fact that getting a 100% completion is a fantastic experience

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
