    Caveat - there may well be a lot of people new to final fantasy or even some fans who can find the fun in this game and judge it for what it is. I, however, can't. I am judging it on what it is not. Normally I'd suggest not to do this and to judge something on its own merit. The difference here is this game is called final fantasy 16.     And it's biggest problem is the patronising lip service it's trying to show it's older fans. If this game scrapped the shallow and awful character upgrade system and concentrated on being an action game with no rpg elements at all it may have been better. I'll end with this. For those of use who loved final fantasy and adored the depth of its upgrade systems and strategical pseudo-turned based combat, this game is not for you. Love to you all    … Expand

We're all in our 20s to 40s now, and how many generations of Final Fantasy can we actually play?     To add injury it is highly aggravating that it can hurt your PS5 for its overheating issues. I just spent 70ussd and next thing it can literally destroy your console.

    Removed what makes Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy... Seems like a fun action game but does not match the name of the game. Resolution and frame rate deff could use some help. Not a fan of the motion blurr.

    It is just terrible. Despite average graphics, it can't even maintain a stable 40 fps. The developers are just brаinlеss idiоts. As for 2023, it is simply unplayable. Even though they released the game on a single platform, they didn't manage to give it a decent optimization.

    Conclusion:
    It is a pity that nowadays developers dare to release such low quality gаrbаgе. Maybe the story is much better than the rest, but now I doubt I will finish the game.    … Expand

    If you adore the early final fantasy games (even the newer ones like FFVIIR) then this game isn't for you. The RPG elements are just an illusion and the game feels like a DMC ripoff that you can easily purchase for way less money.     I got baited by the demo, which was by far the best part of the game. It seems like the game took the worst parts of FF14 which are the endless mind numbing fetch quests and threw them into FF16. Go talk to that guy and go bring this to this guy/girl. Some boss fights are great but some others are way over the top.

    -No party system. get used to playing as the same guy from start to finish. With the "exception" of...the next point im going to make, the dog.

    -The pet dog torgal barely has any interaction. he gets a stat screen but you get no say or option to affect it in any way? not even food or other means to decide how he fights and gets stronger? big missed opportunity.

    -While the story is fairly impressive, and a less-then-wide cast of lovable and memorable characters, there are many segments that felt rushed and not fully realised, and suprisingly felt more like a means to answer questions quickly, There are also segments where the pacing becomes a bit too slow, and honestly. kind of boring. being forced to help npcs in a town hardly stays fun for long.

    -Virtually nothing else to do in the game except fight. fight, and more fight. most final fantasies have minigames of some kind to world build and overall add to the variety of experiences, and also rewards to go with it.

    -sidequests are the epitome of uninspired. there is some effort to make them connect to the main plot but you could skip all their cutscenes and it wont impact your view on the main story at all. also the rewards for sidequests are often underwhelming, and not worth the time in the grander scope of the experience, although they begin to pay out better by the time you reach the endgame.

    -No robust character customization. final fantasies are known for this. your only form of "customization" comes in the form of 3 accessory slots that in most cases slightly impact your moveset damage and cooldowns.

    -your combat abilities come in the form of Summons (eikons in this game) that provide you with cooldown attacks which is very thrilling visually, althought limiting it to just cooldown attacks and 1 passive function left me desiring more. A party system could have strongly helped in this department.

    -Music, sound design, effects and graphics or any other "superficial" aspect of the game where all top notch.

    conclusion:

    If you want a water-downed action rpg with impressive flashy visuals that dont challenge your mettle in any way with a decent/solid story, this is worthy of buying it used or on sale.
    on the flipside.....
    If you are planning to buy it, thinking you are going to get the true final fantasy experience, expecting that will get you lost in all of its depth and many facets of gameplay systems...... i cant recommend it in the slightest as you will be left wanting for somthing a bit more. I said all this without complaining that its not turn-based gameplay. Honestly, it was the furthest thing from my mind when i was playing this, final fantasy isnt about how the combat is, but more how it moves its genre to new levels, and makes you feel immersed in every way possible. The combat in this game did not redefine anything, its just the DMC combat director moving all of his usual stuff he does into a final fantasy action game.

And can't forget, the crystals and a billion pointless garbage side-quests to artificially inflate the size of the game to justify charging full game price for a 20 hour experience which is what made some parts of FF7R mediocre on what could have been an overall amazing game and got people worried about the sequels.

    I remember the days when Final Fantasy was synonym of trailblazing and doing things that no game had done before, this game was another nail in the coffin of mediocrity that is the current state of Square.

    Final Fantasy XVI is literally the cookie cutter of games, exactly what was expected of a game directed by Yoshi-P. Did not disappoint in that sense, the most run-of-the-mill, vanilla, mediocre game with zero memorable features. It was either that or doing what he does for most of XIV which is recycle old Final Fantasy content.

The gameplay is so shallow and easy that they might as well have made it an interactive movie experience. Turd of a game, don't care if Yoshi-P name and CBU3 made it.

    I think this might be the worst Final Fantasy game in the series. The storyline is excellent and it grips you right from the start but that's all it has going for it.

    The game play is as linear as FF13 but can you believe, actually less intersting as you spend most of your time button mashing between three buttons for 1 character, and getting RSI in the wrist as a result. You can't equip new weapons or armor, there are no side activities, no secret bosses or anything like that. It's basically the Last of Us, everything to look at and nothing to do. I remember when one of the developers said they were concerned about the direction Final Fantasy gameplay was going. They were correct.

    I've been playing FF games since the NES, and have enjoyed the development of the series over time. The recent action-hybrid system in FF7 Remake, for example, was a particularly good innovation that built upon    Final Fantasy XVI is not a good game. It is representative of a cynical, lowest-common-denominator approach to game development--the ultimate expression of flash over substance.

    I've been playing FF games since the NES, and have enjoyed the development of the series over time. The recent action-hybrid system in FF7 Remake, for example, was a particularly good innovation that built upon the successes of the past. XVI, however, abandons the past in order to chase after an entirely different gaming audience. The developers have betrayed their own fanbase, cynically concluding both that their old fans will buy the game anyway, and the new audience will be bigger.

    The problem is that XVI doesn't even succeed at what it is trying to be. As an action game it lacks combat depth, and it is very rudimentary and simplistic. Anything even slightly challenging would frustrate the so-called game journalists and lead to lower reviews, so players are treated to the most repetitive, basic combat available in any modern action game, paired with a complete absence of difficulty. The summon battles are even more unsophisticated, playing out like a two-button rail shooter. The very basic QTEs shoe-horned in throughout the game add to the sense that the developers have no new ideas.

    In addition, the developers seem to have cottoned on to the idea that 'mature' means copy-pasting from Game of Thrones. After all, GoT is popular, just like action games. Sometimes, the blatant ripping off of GoT content is so ridiculous as to be laughable, but mostly it comes across as extraordinarily cringe-inducing. This would not be such a big deal if the game were not convinced that it is an HBO miniseries instead of a game. Be prepared to actually 'play' the game for only 15 minutes out of every hour spent with it. The cutscenes are continuous and relentless. But given how dreadful the combat is, perhaps the interminable cutscenes will be a welcome relief.

    Pacing is simply awful, and the towns themselves are reduced to linear paths with NPCs along the side, to say nothing of the dungeons which are even less interesting. There are no places to explore, no treasures to be found in hidden areas, and the sidequests are creatively bankrupt, straight out of the WoW playbook. The storyline goes to pieces in the latter half of the game, and the final boss and conclusion are ridiculous and unfulfilling. The game adds a more challenging NG+ mode after completion, but it's hard to believe anyone would voluntarily play through it again after knowing that the latter portion of the game offers nothing.

    The music and voice acting are both solid and even good in places. Neither is quite top-shelf but both are serviceable, let down by writing, pacing, and setting more than by execution. But these few bright points are obviously not enough to carry the game.

    In the end, a lot of money spent on buying favourable impressions might lead to some people buying this game unaware of just what they're going to get. But, if they've any sense, they won't make that mistake twice: this game really will be their *Final* Fantasy.    … Expand

    Final Fantasy 7 remake in the other hand is a masterpiece.

This is not a RPG, there are no party members, the only different roles are what skills are equipped which is used in any type of action/adventure game these days, Square Enix has lost what made Final Fantasy special which can be seen by it losing ground to other less known brands like Monster Hunter, Persona Series. Those games have focused on gameplay and being innovative instead of graphics and being like everyone else cough Devil May Cry cough. Also did not enjoy all the needless cutscenes which should only be there for the major story elements, for example this game has over 20 hours of cutscenes vs FFX's 6 hours which did it alot better and more meaningful.… Expand

    Eu gostei muito de Final Fantasy VI, até hoje acho que não joguei nenhum RPG que chegasse próximo da experiência que aquela obra prima da Square me deu. De fato um dos melhores jogos já feitos, mas aqui fica a pergunta, será que vou voltar a jogar um RPG desse desenvolvedora? Porque aqui em Final Fantasy XVI não será infelizmente, aqui é apenas mais um hack n slash como tantos outros.

    I think newcomers can like it but for old FF fans this game is terribile.
    I quit FF16 after 30 hours and play just some hours FF 7 (1997 version) to make my heart happy again!

The high-octane battles and "story" that everyone else were praising were really lackluster to me. I give it a zero the same way unjustified 10s are being thrown in this utter disrespect to the legacy of Final Fantasy.

    Yep, Final Fantasy 16 over not being a Final Fantasy game at all, it was an even boring and tedious action game.
    The whole package is just a movie covered with shiny particles and fluff, but miss the actual substance.
    A shallow experience and more specifically this FF16 is a terribly low point for the Final Fantasy franchise

The only reason I completed this was because I paid over $100 dollars for it and wanted to get my money's worth. XIII had its flaws but was better than XVI. XV had issues but was better than XVI. Who exactly was XVI aimed for? Certainly not long time FF fans, clearly. I struggled so much to complete this boring game by the time I finished, I was angry. The ending was a joke just like the story. The characters were ridiculous and probably would not have been if SE explored in detail the time periods of each of them rather than doing time skips or having players have to read in some history archive about pivotal parts of the story, terms, places, etc. Why could we not learn what exactly Clive went through where the demo leaves off or Jill for that matter or how about some better insight into Kupka and Benedikta? Explore all of these characters so we can actually get to know them especially Dion and Barnabas. Or how about SE introducing these vast kingdoms and lands but only allowing exploration to the outskirts or abandoned broken down places? Just a lazy way of doing a game. The treasure boxes scattered around were a joke. Nothing of value at all rather crafting supplies instead of actual potions, or armor/weapons. I got to the point where I just skipped some of them because more often than not there was a goblin coin inside. There was no party. No matter what anyone says, having Jill or anyone else "fighting" in battle was laughable. You can only control Clive and have the dog fight by commands but any others just walked around occasionally doing some useless attack and were otherwise just as much helpful as looking at paint drying. This is some medieval game that just so happens to have some magic sprinkled in and the Final Fantasy name packaged on it but it ain't FF.… Expand

    The Ps5 Port is also a complete mess with with 20-40 fps in performance mode and the graphics mode with a 30 fps lock.There is also Motion Blur which you can't turn off. Brother in christ it is 2023. The story is blant and empty, but the voice actors are doing a good job.

    Been trying to play this for now over 8 hours and it just isn't getting any better.

    Can I give you some advice?
    Avoid Final Fantasy 16.
    Because like Final Fantasy it is ridiculously poor in content and in every element of the series, except the names.
    And as an action game it's just bad.

The side quest and the really really slow parts of the story is just so frustratingly boring, I ended up having to skip through most dialogue and just straight up skip entire side quest cute scenes, and I feel bad cause the voice work in this game is incredible with every VA doing an amazing job, but I just couldn't be bother to care with how slow and tedious the writting could be. The story and environments are so uninteresting, oh boy I sure do love walking through grass area 1 and unlocking grass area 2 and then heading to boring brown ugly desert with nothing of real substance to do in any of these places, its a shame this game limits itself to these boring uninspiring locations and not even making them fun in any way with stuff to do or what not but thats okay its the best this small indie company can do with a IP thats not that well known so they really had to limit themselves on what they could do. And the gameplay gets so stale so DAMN quickly, I love pressing square 5 times and then pressing one of 2 abilites I have at the end and calling that a COMBO, maybe I should spicy it up after the 100th time of doing this and press triangel imbetween each time I press square, whoa! now this is cool action game gameplay. Don't even get to control a different party member or change my weapon at all, forced to play the exact same from start to finish with never any real combos just **** ability moves that like pretend to be combo moves but they're just extra moves you press every now and then.
    THAT DIRECTOR 100% LIED TO **** EVERYONE
    Ryota Suzuki, the Goddamn DMC director, you cannot tell me ff16 is your personal masterpiece when this **** isn't even in the same league of DMC combat, you sir are a liar and need to rethink what your personal masterpiece is cause this is far from it.

    Look I really wanted this to be good, the trailers and demo really painted a picture that this game would truly be a masterly beautiful final fantasy game, and I could excuse most of the problems I have with this game if it kept the same enegry and motion that the demo had with obviosuly more then a pathetic number of 6 Eikon fights and just been more creative and exicting with your story Goddamn it your final fantasy with unlimited themes and potential WHY are you limiting yourself like this.

    Because "playing" ff16 isn't fun at all, since it's basically 85% cutscenes, and the story is even a boring and sluggish dull mess. While the gameplay is button smashing meet bullet sponge mobs + cinematics qte bosses (all scripted).
    Hugely disappoint experience imho

    One of the worst action games I've had the misfortune to play
    Practically this Final Fantasy 16 is like a game in Beta, where the only complete element is that of the plot while everything else is absent. Especially the boring gameplay at QTE.

    Well knowing how 90% of everything are cutscenes connected by almost soulless "gameplay" phases and almost totally devoid of player interaction, I'd say I can't even call this a real game.
    Then I call it Fake Fantasy 16, the shameful crap of YoshiP

    The soporific story clash with a braindead gameplay.
    Poorly written story, bad written characters, bad pacing, objectively zero exploration, zero secrets, and a forgettable and generic art design.     The first thing I have ever say is: don't waste your time and don't waste your money with this fake game
    The reason is the ridiculous gameplay button smashing, and the BORING and anonymous story.
    The graphics is late old gen, on the same level of a PS4 porting, but with terrible framerates drop and popup.
    And in the end I'm severely disappointed by this FF

    Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry.     New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
