Of all the Final Fantasies they could have taken inspiration from, XIII was an interesting choice. I'd say it looks nice, but that's only in cutscenes or as a facade from the sparky, flashy particle effects.

There is such a ludonarrative dissonance between your character being so powerful in combat, but a complete pushover as all of the NPCs constantly degrade you. I don't want to help these people, I don't want to save this awful world. They try to ground this game in some sort of medieval reality, but then Clive jumps around doing goofy combos like Dante from Devil May Cry.

Some of the cutscenes are breathtaking and the story has some good beats. But that's really about it. And that's the kind of thing you can get for a $12 movie ticket, not a $70 game.

But this is just a really boring Game, you litterally grind trough every fight pressing only a few Buttons and Dodge. No more thinking about any Strategy its just hack and slay.

Also im so bored out by the Story, this is more of a bad Game of Thrones Spinoff than a Final Fantasy. Im quite sure that it will be the first Final Fantasy Title that i stop playing mid game, cuz after 20h in the game i already really have to force myself to play it. Its no fun at all. I dont feel the Characters. Its just a very bad Game in my Opinion.

FFXVI manages to make a war between kingdoms using gods as super weapons so boring it will bring you to tears.

FFXVI manages to make a war between kingdoms using gods as super weapons so boring it will bring you to tears.

    Story:
    - Overwritten dialogue: I get its a fantasy game, and maybe there should be some fantastical dialogue, but some of the crap that comes out of these 2D husks is just unendurably pretentious. I found myself avoiding quests towards the end of the game just so i didn't have to listen to NPCs vomit exposition at me. It also doesn't help that more than half the game is a cutscene.
    - Unearned plot-twists: There will be several plot twists in the story that simply don't make sense with the information you have at the time. These jarring twists are often explained after the fact, which sometimes make them sensible, but very often this still is not the case.
    - Awful pacing: Abuses time jumps frequently to feign character growth and story scale, as opposed to organic character/story changes over time. Important parts of character journey that would've been REALLY interesting to see are just completely skipped over, only to be constantly referred to in afterwards. You'll get this a lot during the early game, and its really frustrating.
    - Character motives and relations are not well established, if at all. At times, established motives will be utterly countered by a characters actions, which are always nonsensical. This is to progress the story in the way the writers want it to, without a care for consistent character writing. Part of this problem is the pacing mentioned earlier.
-Illogical lore: Eikons are basically super weapons that most kingdoms value majorly, and yet they hate other magic users. Why?? They are identical in every way other than eikons having MORE magical power. Really makes no sense to me. Eikons are also implied to be equivalent in strength through character dialogue, but this is clearly not the case in the story. Why this is so is never explained.
    - Terrible characters: A combination of dull writing, near-absent facial expression and flat uninspired voice acting (at least the English VAs) lead to a bunch of forgettable NPCs. This is particularly the case with the MC, who expresses one of 4 emotions: happy, angry, sad or very sad. It doesn't help that almost every single character has either a British, Spanish or Irish accent, making them quite hard to separate. Would have liked to see more variety.

    Gameplay:
    - Boring Action: There is absolutely no style or excitement in combat. It is just a load of button mashing with very limited ability cycling and easy dodges. Every ability and attack is something you have seen before if you have played any RPG. The game also has too much visual noise, often making combat utterly disorientating. The enemies are all just massive damage sponges, often taking minutes to kill anything bigger that a foot soldier. This is especially true in the large cinematic fights, which quickly lose their appeal when you are stuck there for 10mins fighting the same fight.
    - Useless Crafting and Currency: You are often flooded with crafting materials and Gil to pad the rewards screen of the dull combat you've just endured. These materials are hardly ever used, as crafting options are severely limited, to the point that it may as well not exist. Money also has no function outside of buying musical tracks for your home base.
    - Linear dungeons: Most dungeons have 0 branches, instead being a stroll through generic RPG settings. In the rare cases where a dungeon has a branch or two, exploring them is not rewarded, as you will either get a useless crafting item, useless currency or a potion, which you have an infinite supply of with your bottomless pockets of Gil.
    - An Empty World: Unrewarding in the same way as dungeons, with the only thing to discover being various combat trials. This open world is slowly and painfully opened up through linear missions, and really isn't worth the wait.
    - Fetch Quest Fetch Quest Fetch Quest: Every side quest to my memory is basically "Go here, kill this, fetch this back, mission complete!" Not a very interesting formula. There were some interesting stories in these quests, but they are few in number.

    Sound/Visual Design:
-Visual: Comparing FFXVI and FFXV, I actually like the designs of the gods in FFXVI more (except for Ifrit and Bahamut). The main villain is also VERY creepy in its design and initial presentation, In other aspects, such as level visual design, the game is typically flat and uninteresting visually.
-Music: FFXV has some tracks that I still listen too today, like Somnus etc. In comparison, 16 flaunts around generic fantasy crap that you wont remember, despite there being quite a range of tracks on the home base juke box. I played the betrayal theme in my homebase as it matched my mood playing the game and my thoughts on the games marketing. Sound is also poorly mixed, with the BGM overwhelming all other sounds, whilst massive terrifying creatures make roars that you have to strain to hear.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One point for Jill character design, and another point for the Devil may Cry action alike combo. Ekion fights are epic, but the rest of the game direction is so bad. Overall experience is worse than early PS2 game with a glitchy story plot twist.

Still it's the best ps exclusive in the last two, a little better than ghost of Tsushima. Way entertaining than HFW and GoWR for sure. But, if you're into action arpg and didn't against anime style character and story. TOA, Xenoblade are just better choice with a lower price point and more interesting combat and story.

    - The general story doesn't impress me that much. It started good but it turns to something that feels like it wants to be something that it just isn't able to accomplish. It often remembers on FF13 on a weird way.

    - It also lacks of lightweight moments. I know it is suppose to be dark and mature. But this one is actually just joyless depressive and meaningless brutal.

    - the worlddesign is quite boring. Especially compared to FF14, FF12, FF10, FF9. It doesn't feel high fantasy for me at all. It's medieval with fantasy titbits here and there.

    - It has way too many and way too long cutscenes.

    - No actual party-system, elements and buffs/debuffs, minigames. Equipment is there but it doesn't matter much.

    - The so praised summon battles are cutscenes and quick time events for the most part. FF10, FF12, FF7R handled it a lot better, imo. Cool graphics just don't impress me as much as cool mechanics. Sorry.

    - I refuse corridor leveldesign like this. It's acceptable in FFX and FF7R because the combat was fun enough to carry it. But we are at NVME-SSD's now and I'm just tired of it.

    - And to make it even worse, they weren't able to make exploring worth it, even it's that linear already.

    - The sidequests are that bad, too.

It's basicly just an interactive movie with some hack and slash sequences, which feels way more backwards than FF13 at this point.

One point for the music though. Square never disappoint here.

The lack of depth in customizing your characters performance really starts to show itself. It is VERY similar to what they did over the years in ff14 by dumbing things down far too much and instead of stopping, they just dumb it down more. A lot of people praise Yoshi like a cult leader but Ive seen this coming from him for awhile. The guy does not know how to give depth to the games player base and that bs continued in 16.

The other problem is the dungeons. The pattern is literally a copy paste of FF14 dungeons….. Trash mob > mini boss. > trash > mini > boss

I did not buy a single player expansion for 14. I bought ff16.
Honestly think after 24 years of FF games this is the last one im getting. I play this and I cant just pretend I dont need a lot of depth in my character gear weapons and even level up abilities.

If you quit finally ff14 and dont plan to go back, chances are youre not going to like 16 at all.

Weakest point is the story, which for a final fantasy game is absolutely horrendous news. no spoilers, but this game has so may plot holes it would make an excellent sieve. and the end game story is just awful, explains nothing, and leaves you wondering. Honestly, this is the most disappointed I have ever felt finishing a Final fantasy game out of the entire franchise, and it gives me zero ambition to want to play through it again on the game plus mode. Bring back Tabata. FFXV was a game actually trying something and was a good blueprint for the series. XVI feels like a half-hearted attempt at trying to copy other games and TV shows.

Having a director of marketing as one of the producer was never a good idea. They are smashing non sense dialogues toward the end obliterating what they layed out in the first part of the game. The game is a missing opportunity from head to toe, the concept was good (slaves = interchangeable battery, crystal=petrol, finite world on the brink of extinction), but the game miss the point completely. Beside the bad story, the game design is just completely insanely anachronistic for a AAA premium game (and I am not talking about the linearity). It is the worst action / beat them all in the market, it looks like te game refused to incorporate years of video game literacy. It is very pretentious and almost condescending towards the user. It is not the worst Final Fantasy, but close enough. Expand

47% in the story, I think the Demo a bit overhyped my expectations of FF16. So far, the game graphics and performance is acceptable.
Action combat is good, cinematic QTE is great but that's all. The other aspects of the game feel so rough. Side quests with ! is tedious. Just sticked with those hv + on them.
Story is alright but nothing too immersive, and lack of characters interactions

And CB3 really failed in the RPG elements in order to make this a masterpiece. Pretty much you don't need to care with your gear set up and 95% of the time you just found to polish your combo execution skills. And, that's the core element of action game.

In short, it's a fun action game with a touch of rpg and long story. But, it reli fail to deliver a well rounded Rpg experience. 2/10 one for combat and other other for cinematic Ekions fights.

I have been playing the game for almost 25 hours now and I am extremely disappointed with the game. I never thought a main final fantasy entry could be this bad. I respect people who enjoy the game, but I look at the amazing triple A games we saw this year and the last couple of years and I can't help but feel that this game doesn't stand slightest bit of chance against these other games (God of war, FF7 remake for example). Everything in the game screams half baked. Combat is repetitive, non challenging, non tactical. I wish the combat could be compared to devil may cry or Bayonetta. I would've enjoyed it if it did. At the very least DMC had combo structures and tactics behind it. This game simply doesn’t, you rely on a standard combo that you can mix with magic bursts. You basically only unlock two additional basic moves: stinger, and a helm breaker. Combat goes like this: combo and mix magic bursts and evade when needed. Release all your eikonic abilities, wait for them to cool down and keep doing the same combo with magic bursts and evade when needed. All the flashy stuff you saw in trailers are eikonic abilities that need cool down to be used again. Magic has no effect on enemies. Facing a fire lava beast? Blast him with fire and it will take damage with no problems. No poison or sleep or silence effects. Need to buff your attacks? Use an item. Want to heal? Use a potion. Can you ask the dog to heal you? Yes, but it does almost no effect.

Graphics is just another giant mess. They opted for a non open world game and we ended up with poorly lit, barren areas with players having to literally crank the brightness slider to the highest possible to be able to play the game. At the very least FF15 felt fun to roam the world. That game had day and night cycles, interesting missions and hunts, party member to keep you company and make the game fun and enjoyable to play despite it having a dark sad story, when you rested at night and cooked a meal you felt you were relaxing like the characters. That game was made with love.

Games like god of war and ff7 remake were both linear games and had beautiful environment designs and ran near perfectly smooth with no issues. I don't know what to say about the story except that I felt I have been experiencing a cliche play displayed at an underground theater for amateurs. I hate to be so harsh, but there's nothing remotely exciting for me in this game at this point and I feel sad about wasting 70 USD. I have to be so critical because I am a big fan of the final fantasy franchise. I always expect immense creativity from square enix especially when it comes to final fantasy games but this game is just a sad half baked product that feels extremely disappointing.

At one point you feel like you're playing a Devil May Cry wannabe game, suddenly shifts to being a shallow MMO RPG with laughably dull and outdated side quest design, to over the top cinematic battles held back by Quick Time Events (QTEs) that have a very long window that takes away the purpose of QTEs which is to be engaging and interactive.

This is not how to evolve a franchise; this is just a poor uninspired attempt at copying other games while shoehorning bland RPG elements in the mix.

And the story is another story; without going into much details, but everything the game does well to build up its story and characters throws it away mid way through the game and takes a completely uninteresting pivot that ends badly.

This is by far one of the worst Final Fantasy games and one that doesn't bode well for the franchise's future, because despite having a somewhat good combat and characters, the game ignores the things that it needs to excel and innovate on as a Final Fantasy game.

My advice: don't think of it as a Final Fantasy game. You'd enjoy it for its combat that is clearly and heavily inspired by Devil May Cry. Otherwise, I don't recommend it at all as a Final Fantasy game.

    * Game's performance is not well optimized by the way.

As someone with 35 years of gaming experience, I can confidently say that Final Fantasy 16 is not only the worst in the series but falls far below the average quality of similar games. In the 20 hours of gameplay I've experienced, I can only describe it as dull and agonizing. It requires deep breaths and self-encouragement just to hold onto the DualSense controller. This game is an exceptionally boring and uninteresting RPG from a major game developer.

The weapon and equipment system feels superficial and pointless. Any new weapon that appears only provides a permanent +5 attack boost without changing the attack style, making them indistinguishable. The repetitive tasks for forging materials are uninspired and offer no significant rewards.

The team system lacks presence and interactivity. The characters have monotonous attire and limited attack styles. The maps or level designs are small and uninteresting. It's shocking to discover that even at 60% progress, there are only two area maps available.

The variety of enemies is extremely lacking. The bestiary lists only 47 non-playable creatures, including 15 eikons, 1 owl from cutscenes, 2 Chocobos, and the rest being various types of enemies and bosses. In actual gameplay, only encountering around ten different enemy types on the maps is disheartening.

All side quests involve simply traveling from point A to point B to either defeat enemies or engage in dialogue. They are repetitive and lack creativity. The material rewards obtained upon completion are meaningless since new weapons and upgrades are only obtained through story progression, making the rewards feel insulting.

If I were to describe it, Final Fantasy 16 can be seen as a realistic version of "Tales of Arise" without an equipment, companion, and skill system, with severely reduced maps and enemy variety.

As someone who has reached a mature age and has been gaming for 35 years, I have learned not to be driven solely by emotions. I have been able to appreciate controversial titles such as The Last of Us Part II, Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 13, and Final Fantasy 15, finding the positives in each of them. However, this time, Final Fantasy 16 has brought me nothing but agony. Skipping through dialogues quickly has become the norm, and now I can only hope that my patience will allow me to complete the game.

The positive reviews read like they were written by a PR agency which should be an indicator that they are fake. here is the actual score of the game from someone who has done a full play through.

Score as a Final Fantasy game: 0.025/10
Score as an action game: 3.2/10
Score as a Dark Souls Clone: 9.5/10

First this is the worst story i have ever seen in a video game. Beware the toxically positive FF14 community that try to flame anyone who brings a valid criticism to anything Yoshi P touches. It is disconnected with the only good character leaving after 18% of the game. The ending was terrible but honestly a fitting conclusion to this horrible game.

    Cons:
-All the bad elements of FF14 were copied and pasted into this game. All your quests will have you talking to multiple people who don't matter to waste your time. All the monsters and areas were copied from FF14 and had their graphics slightly up-ressed. The story is mostly copied from shadow bringers expansion. All the character models are slightly up scaled graphics of FF14.

-A death or two is impactful, killing everyone is just lazy story telling.

-This game has more adult material in it than all the Grand Theft Autos combined. Using the F word every third word and screaming it does not make something better. It does not make a setting darker. It is just lazy story telling.

-Completely disconnected narrative. After beating the game and getting to the end nothing in this story makes sense. There are cheesy cut scenes that have cringe dialogue with unlikable characters that talk about things that have no connection with the actual story in the game. The only likable character exits the game at around 18%,

-Unfulfilling end and conclusion. Nothing is accomplished or saved at the end. You are left filling empty and fatigued after getting to the end. I had to force myself to finish this game just so i didn't feel bad about spending all the money of buying it.

-Really terrible boss fights and cut scenes. This game is like junk food in the boss fights. Only tastes good for 15 minutes after it comes out and leaves you with a stomach ache and regret over making bad life choices. This was made for the Instagram generation that needs a ton of flashing lights and movement to keep their interest for more than 2 min. You can't even tell what is going on in most of the fights. Again this was another aspect copy and pasted from FF14. The initial Ifirit shceme in the main game (after the prologue), has the same background as FF14. It is pure lazyness.

-Length of game: The initial playthrough took me around 22 hours (over 75% of this time was doing really poorly designed fetch quests that required me to go to multiple locations and talk to npcs that don't matter to waste my time, like FF14). That was with completing every side quest, crafting every weapon available on normal difficulty, and completing every hunt. I have never clocked in less than 80 hours on an original FF game. Like FF7 remake after finishing the game you are forced to play through it again on a higher difficulty to feel like you have truly beaten the game. This allows lazy devs to use a small story and game twice to make it feel like its larger.

-There are so many more cons but i think the story being so bland and terrible is the biggest one.

    Pro:

This is probably the best dark souls game ever made. That is what all the development resources went into. Do you want to have scored events where you can flex you Epeen to your friends or the internet with how much better you are than them? There is a score based on battle performance for every level, zone, and trial.

In the same vein on "Final Fantasy" difficulty every fight is a struggle to manage your resources to win as you get later into the game. It requires perfect dodges and giving screen prompt commands that no longer appear on the screen and you just have to know what to press during mini cinematic events.

Conclusion: this is the worst Final Fantasy game ever made. It is a bad action game, but a great dark souls like difficulty game once you beat it and can do a second play through on the original intended difficulty. My review is based upon this being marketed as a main line Final Fantasy game.

This is at best an AAA title for Nintendo Switch (and I play on Nintendo Switch too) and I would be thrilled if this is not called a Final Fantasy game and is a debutant like Hogwarts Legacy was.

You know how FFXV had "A FF for fans and First timers"? (and it really is that). SE, you made your shot with calling up newcomers, you delivered, what you delivered, drop it off and return to roots. This one should be "A FF for Tik Tokers and those with attention span of a gold fish". This game is bad even for "hack and slash" type of games. I really don't see how is this called a FF game, when it's clearly a mish-mash of more popular games of this genre (God of War, DMC) with a "GoT" wannabe story. I expected Hogwarts Legacy to be watered down to bare bones of what deserves to be called an RPG, but I don't understand why SQUARE ENIX decided to cater to eventual newcomers, because there are plenty of other games out there that are "meta" and easy enough to play for people that are starting in JRPG and RPG overall. Final Fantasy was known for it's kinda complex combat system and managing right tactics at right time and it has a specific audience. It makes me sad seeing how they dumbed down whole game for masses.

Starting with preformance issues on preformance mode, reviewers described it as "minor stutters here and there"- No. They are not minor stutters here and there, but every time you enter some kind of "city" I would get motion sickness from such a poor optimization, and it doesn't get better with spending time there, it's the same if I just entered the place or I've been in it for 30min. Lack of customization in graphic settings is sad, I automatically turn of film grain and motion blur in every game because I just can't stand it.

Story started off strong, but it gets watered down, like they wanted you to hook up but for the rest of the game you hope it will have such a strong punch but it never happens, this basically became a dopamine chaser. Comabt gets old pretty fast, because you just smash square button and kick out same bullet sponges over and over. I got Garuda element but it doesn't really contribute to anything. I tought there would be some elemental weakness or some tought behind it, but nope - just a new flashy way to hack and slash trough mobs.

More often than not, I feel like game forces me into "Jesus take the wheel" mindset during epic battles. This mechanic was supposed to be the most epic in the game, that makes me want to jump out of my skin from excitement, but instead I drench it because I become a passive observer with ocassional QTE reminder that echoes Netflixes "Are you still watching?" There is waaaay to much cut scenes and with that many cut scenes you expect to know what is going on and who is who in every given time, but I find myself pulling out "Active time lore" more often than not, because there is too much kingdoms, dutchies and what not to keep track off. It feels thrown out and not fleshed out how its supposed to be fleshed out. Witcher is an example where you clearly know at any given time who are the "baddies and good guys" without suffocating the flow of the story.

I recently finished DIablo 4, and even Diablo had more fleshed out story and "who and why's", Even Diablo has more open map and world. honestly can't wait to finish this and jump back in Diablo.

Don't even consider getting this game if its not on some major sale, You will not get Final Fantasy expirience at all and you will be disappointed once more at how a huge respectable company can massacre belowed franchise because they are greedy or bored or don't even know in which direction they want to go anymore.

You’re genuinely only ever a few fights or a couple hundred yards at most away from the next cutscene, it’s frankly jarring just how often they take control away from the player, and half the time it’s to say nothing. And the world is so empty. Now by empty I mean the bestiary is like 38-40 creatures and over half of that is Eikons, some important characters, an owl you only see for a couple minutes, and then the other half are enemies. So essentially when you’re walking around any of these on rails or even semi open stages you’re going to be fighting the same 5-6 enemies for the majority of the game. And there’s geniunely nothing to do except advance the main story. The shinies on the ground on the map? It’s about 2-5 gil, a potion (of which you can only have 7 of ever), or 1-3 crafting mats. Wooden chest on the map? It’s about 100 gil or about 20 crafting mats. Finish a side quest? Oh yeah crafting mats. Boss time oh yeah!! You are rewarded with crafting mats. Major plot enemy or Eikon fight?!?! You guessed it! More crafting mats!!! And thats assuming you can get through all the QTEs they put into every Eikon fight to hide loading times that literally consist of either “press square” or “press R1” and you have like 10 seconds to do it so no rush. And those QTEs will about take care of the last half of their Hp so don’t worry. Did I mention crafting mats? Because you literally barely ever need to use it. You are 100% guaranteed to get the next best weapon from a mat dropped by last chapters boss. There are no status effects, no elemental weaknesses, which I feel like they forgot. Because enemies cast stuff like bad breath, poison mist, etc., you get several elemental spells, but all they do is damage, again no status effects, and in no greater amount than any other spell. It’s….pretty, and the story really tries to stay relevant minus some very weird points it REALLY wants to drive home and some massive plot holes, but it has some really good scenes for sure. But this game only feels like a slightly interactive visual novel with some good boss fights. Better to watch a stream or a YouTube vid because it really just feels like a GoT fan fic movie. Please don’t waste your money. Expand

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons.

The combat system is not nearly as deep as people make it out to be. Normal enemies are a cake-walk, so while you might come up with combos, they're dead before you even finish them. Boss enemies generally can't be juggled, so they can't be comboed. It basically becomes a game of dodge, attack, dodge, attack. Initially you'll use high stagger moves, then when staggered you start off with a multi-hit move to build up combo and then spam all the skills to do the highest damage. In the end it's just a rotation. It's fun, but we've seen better.

Side-quests are boring, the game would be better without them. Old FF games did not really have that many side-quests and what was there was more interesting in terms of characters and reward.

Items are also useless for the most part, which in turn means exploration is meaningless. Yay, more sharp fangs! There are no status effects, so no items to help with that, only a few potions can be brought along and usually they'll drop them right in front of the boss arena. You just never actually have to prepare for anything.

Eikon fights are all about the spectacle. The actual gameplay is worthless.

I'm baffled by how positive the reception has been to a game that has such terrible game design. If you strip away the spectacle, the game itself has nothing going for it anymore. In fact, I think you'll be having more fun just watching the game than playing it. It would just be better as a movie.

The only difference is people actually had to PAY for this game. So it is more likely 0 would exist if they didn’t like the game. Whereas, fanboys or people with low expectations and the inability to review would give it a 10 for satisfying a couple of category or for just not being bad. If perfect existed in your world, then it is clear that you don’t know what you are talking about. Ever think your spouse or job or anything else in life is perfect?

Now that’s out of the way.

The game clearly has a great artistic feel from music to graphics. I would even say it’s one of the best for environment / feel they are trying to portray like every Final Fantasy. However, that has become the base for a very long time. Over 20-years. It’s like voice acting is expected in games today, so it doesn’t get a 10 for having great music or graphics which it’s already known for as a Final Fantasy title.

That being said, what makes the game suffer is really the creative direction & gameplay of the series. The title is one of first MAIN titles given a rating of M, which says something. That something being their target market is no longer towards the light-hearted adventurous players. You can tell that they are totally targeting the Western audiences with the Brute character designs, blood, gore, and sexual themes etc.

This in of itself makes it a Western RPG not. Japanese RPG.

It’s medieval Europe and I will praise they did not bow to the Woke crowd and adjust to include Blacks. It’s not like they included Asians. No gaming company should bow to the Woke on creativity, that’s why Disney is failing so horribly. At any rate, being set in medieval Europe I would have enjoyed the series a lot more if it had a different Art Direction.

It seems like the Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was just the beginning of the Dark Gore style art. XVI reminds me a lot of it. It really started with XV but these type of art direction is only captivating to Western players. Previously, even during the PS1 era, a lot of people hated JRPGs or video games in general. They only started climbing aboard gaming during Xbox 360’s release. That has caused the FPS genre to take off. These players are often polar opposites.

This game basically threw away what final elements it had as an JRPG (started at FF13) in attempt to capture the Western audiences. Notice the art-style changes vs Tales of, Persona, Xenoblade etc.

One of the most important and greatest things about JRPG is its enormous world, and ability to travel around the world. I’m not talking about travelling around an island or a country but an airship with the ability to dive in water or into the air to roam the world. That has completely disappeared.

The second, is the light-hearted main characters, elements that appeal to teenagers or younger audiences. It is clear to me from the art direction, that they no longer want to appeal to younger audiences except probably the older Western generation from the PS1 and 360 eras. Look at the difference between popular games like Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite etc vs the New Final Fantasy Art styles. This has bothered me, because I prefer light-hearted characters opposed to brutes of the Western games.

I remember someone made a video talking about Cloud, how he looks like a girl and they can’t take him to a bar for a beer like Thor. Brutes are the character designs of the Western society. It’s like how woman look like crap in video games for West vs Japanese designs. So I don’t like their art and creative direction. This game atmosphere reminds me of Vagrant Story from the 90s or the Stranger of Paradise closer to the 2020s. The atmosphere is one of the same, dark, gloomy, etc not magical like Final Fantasy games should be. It is a very Westernized Design for western audiences. Reminds me of another art style Elden Ring.

Other JRPGs like Tales of, Xenoblade, Persona, etc all is taking a very light-hearted approach but Final Fantasy games are becoming what you call Western RPG not JRPG.

    Battle system
I always like new battle systems and learning about them. I don’t really care if it’s button smashing or strategic like Marvel Midnight Suns, it’s all fine to me. However, this is more button smashing.

I would write more but I don’t have time to waste on this review. It’s a hype, and fanboy game. Maybe it will appeal to Western players more, who knows? I guarantee you that a lot of the 10/10 reviews are also fake as I stated nothing in this world is perfect, especially if you paid $$$ for it.

To me, it wasn’t worth the $150. I don’t think it was a life changing game. There was nothing revolutionary about the game.

The story is like if the folks who wrote Kingdom Hearts 2-3 tried to make a Game of Thrones story. It is full of adult content mixed in with absolute nonsense mixed with "gotcha" moments that make your eyes roll. Also side quests hell, awful, useless side quests.

Another point where this Final Fantasy 16 fails it's the graphics, once upon a time the meaning of the franchise was also his wonderful graphics, but here in FF16 they have made a step back even on this, with the low poly textures, the framerates drops, and the background and NPC that feels like a PS3 assets port.
And in the end, even the plot so much pumped ended up to be a snorefest of tediousness, especially after the first hours, like they know exactly what was the plot downsizes, and so they have decided to promote the game only accompanied by something from the first 3 hours, for this reasons the bait Demo.

The combat is a carbon copy of KH and DMC which doesn't translate well in FF and the graphics are drab if you aren't watching a summon. Characters lack personality and face textures. I Don't get the hype for this game it barely feels like a Final Fantasy game. It just rips off DMC's combat and the length of MGS cutscenes. Do not get this game you will be disappointed if you're a fan of the older and superior turn-based Final Fantasy games.

The game is far too easy and even boss fights are stacked with checkpoints so that you can restart mid-fight in the unlikely case you would die.
Fighting is boring and ultra repetitive.
The gear system and abilities system are jokes and are not interesting.
The item system is useless and you can breeze through the game by using only potions.
There is no strategy in fights, you just damage, damage, and damage. No status, no magic, nothing… And there are so many explosions of lights that you can not see enemies attacking.
The pacing of the game is horrible with extremely long cutscenes for the main story where people walk slowly, talk slowly, stare, and repeat the same things over and over. Every motion is slow, taking a quest, giving an item to an NPC, displaying the reward screen. And most of the time you can not speed it up, it’s either skip it or endure it.
The main story is extremely simple and always repeats the same pattern: The bad guy of the hour appears, side quests to solve to go to the bad guy lair, fight with the bad guy, repeat over and over until the end. The villain of the game is revealed extremely early and from there there will be almost no twists. Everything that happens is easy to anticipate. The relationships between people are strange and very cringy. Even the romance between Clive and Jill is not good. The characters that accompany Clive are dull and uninteresting. Their clothes and designs are so devoid of color and originality that they look like any other random NPC. And since you do not control them, it does not feel like they are part of the adventure. The story is also an uninspired copy/paste of Game of Thrones and Witcher 3 in so many ways that it’s impossible to find a shred of originality in it.
The side quests are a complete disaster and just MMORPG like side quests, devoid of any interest and impact on the story. You could just skip them and be the better for it. Their pacing and fetching pattern is also horrible.
The game has 2 lore characters that are here to give the impression that the story is complex and ends up telling you most of the time nothing: One of them tells you: The king will probably do something soon. How is that even smart?
There is no exploration, no map with free movements. It’s corridor after corridor after corridor.
The chocobos are nice because they make you gain time. Otherwise they are useless. Same for the Mog.
The main villain looks like an alien version of Marilyn Manson and does not inspire fear.
The main character is a little interesting at the beginning but becomes very dull as the adventure goes on.
Also the power scale does not make sense in this game, with simple thieves challenging your character to fight when he has god-like powers.

Some of the musical pieces are good, especially during boss fights (except a very strange techno music that is the most horrible thing I have heard in an RPG). But others themes are just copy-paste of older FF music ( FF VIII, FF XIV) that do not have their place in this game.
The only thing this game has going for it is that it is quite beautiful. But this is often diminished by having a lot of dark and dull environments. This makes the world dull and everything but a fantasy world.

Also some of the Dominants fights and the last fight are quite epic. It’s such a shame that they are so easy and simple. It removes all sense of stakes and dread.

A superficial experience. The itemization and progression is terrible. The action combat is pretty cool but came at the expense of so much that made the Final Fantasy series great. They can add action combat without losing dang near everything that made FF great along the way.

There's next to no real strategy needed, it's super linear and you'll watch the game play more for you than you will actually play. I'm legit surprised this is a staple game to the long running series and not a spin off. Story is on par with a Disney marvel film with their objectives to cater towards mass appeal. It's safe, generic and lacks anything of substance. Unfortunately, that's all the game is. A story in which you are railroaded into playing the entire time with next to no real way to change the pace or outcome of. Side quest are very generic fetch or kill quest that don't even grant much for completing.

Visuals are god-tier but that's it. Gameplay wise it's the most boring, mundane experience I've ever had with a final fantasy game. There's no thought process needed to play it. You'll just be mashing one button for hours. No party management, no level grinding, no exploration, no resistances or any sort of build variety/theory crafting..Apparently the last real final fantasy game was 15, this is not my final fantasy and is my biggest regret of spending $90 on for sure in my long gaming history. What a waste.. Square Enix really dropped the ball on this.

The physics are beyond horrible. The lighting effects are a joke. The story is complete trash. It is the typical "muh dark mature story" cliche garbage beloved by toy-collecting Millennials. Maybe if these developers were more mature about developing their games than writing cringeworthy stories for bully-victims, this game wouldn't have facial animations as awful as Mass Effect Andromeda. For goodness sake, why are developers so obsessed with exaggerating the dramatic music in games? Enough already. It's embarrassing to be a gamer these days because of stupid garbage like this.

The combat is boring and repetitive. When I pay $70, I expect a combat system with depth and detail. All the developers did is put pretty lights during every move, to give players the illusion that the game is fun. None of that is fun for me. This game fails to add the attention to detail you would expect in a AAA game. There are too many invisible walls in this game, just like the last two arty farty God of War games. Speaking of God of War, there are too many cutscenes, even during the terrible boss fights. I don't want to watch a freaking movie, I just want to punch monsters. The side quests are boring. The level design is poor and so are the camera angles. Dead bodies and plants don't react to your movement. The animations are pathetic.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, this game will go back to the shelf and collect dust. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. The greedy developers were too cheap and lazy to implement multiplayer. I am sick to death of these greedy developers increasing the prices of games, only for us to get half of the game. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.

I'm very disappointed even though I expected nothing, and I rate it 0 because I feel like I completely got scammed by unfair and subjective reviews which are probably purchased, so I'll just balance it out.

    10. Music is not on par to previous titles.
    11. Some aspects of the game design are very unnecessary.
    12. OVERALL: this is a complete failure as a "Final Fantasy" title. As a "Devil May Cry"-type title, it works. Graphics are nice too. But the most important aspects of the game are terrible.

If this is the direction SquareEnix is going with Final Fantasy, then Final Fantasy as we knew it is dead.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry.
