Awakened in a strange new land, and displaced from his final resting place, The Penitent One is thrust back into the endless cycle of life, death, and resurrection, with no other option than to explore this perilous new world and uncover its long-forgotten secrets.

Hordes of grotesque enemies stand in your way, awaiting final judgement by the brutal hand of the Penitent One, with titanic twisted bosses also lurking in the darkness, waiting for their chance to return you to the grave from whence you came.

Blasphemous 2 is not for the faint of heart. The battles can be difficult at times - to a controller-breaking level. However, if you’re a fan of the stresses and strains found in Souls-like games and are willing to learn the moves inside out, then this Metroidvania will reward you with beautiful finishing kills and adrenaline-filled boss fights.

Blasphemous 2 is a near-flawless sequel that only improves on its own formula. The game is bigger, bolder and more confident in every facet. Combat is more diverse and brutal, the platforming more fulfilling and the presentation more enriched and hauntingly beautiful. One of the best 2D Metroidvanias that honours the Soulslike formula, whilst carving out its own path.

Blasphemous 2 is a bold step up for The Game Kitchen, and somehow manages to feel both familiar and brand new.

Blasphemous 2 is one of the best metroidvanias ever. The Game Kitchen has outdone itself in every way to create a masterful sequel to the second pilgrimage of the Penitent One.

Priced at a decent $30 and the size of only 2GB, Blasphemous 2 offers well over 20 hours of Metroidvania Action, and for those who are patient and are willing to learn and explore, it’s a must buy.

Our pilgrimage is one marked by the cuts and bruises we accumulate along the way, yet we find ourselves encouraged by a familiar mantra: how sweet the pain, indeed, when it is our own. [Issue#389, p.106]

An aggravating mix of truly gorgeous visuals and some fun platforming challenges with unsatisfying combat. It feels often flat, and doesn’t live up to the first game. [Issue#32, p.72]

A worthy follow-up, which improves in almost every way. Varied weapons, skill tree, a nice mix of platforming to complement the combat. IA worthy follow-up, which improves in almost every way. Varied weapons, skill tree, a nice mix of platforming to complement the combat. I would appreciate more standard enemies instead of just variants (different colour with different element of damage). The bosses are overall fair and generally well telegraphed, although the difficulty curve starts well, then seems to go all over the place, as with later bosses feeling far easier than beginning (this could be from reflexes improved or better abilities/magic). This can be apparent with enemies later that their main difficulty is they take half your health bar with a hit (yes, this can be mitigated with appropriate items etc).

Audio and music are serviceable, yet I felt I loved the music more this time round. If you are a completionist, this game is very doable, however, there is some very obscure achievements/items that seem a little too vague just because they can, such as the finding of 10 hidden symbols. The NPC's and bosses and some death animations are still grotesque as ever. The Game Kitchen took to heart feedback from the original and made this truly what defines a sequel. Worth the price point and can't wait for DLC (there was 3 in the original). Kudos devs.
