Fortunately the game is fun to play and the story is enjoyable. Chicago feels alive and the hacking powers are awesome, though the "uniqueness" of each NPC isn't eventually what we first feel.
Although being fun to play, the game stays short in many things when comparing in to some other sandboxes (gunplay, plain characters, car collisions and driving...) and Aiden Pierce himself isn't at the height of a title like this.

Summarizing, the game has some ups (humor, gameplay, story, innovative online multiplayer) but its downs (graphic details, driving is tough, characters are charmless...) prevent it from reaching the initial concept it was delivered. However, it's remarkable that Watch Dogs is easily the best AAA title available for PS4 and a recommendable buy

    The Good

    -A rich and vibrant world
    -Some good level design
    -Enjoyed the hacking element

    The Bad

    -Vehicle handling is poor
-Sound design is woeful, cars and guns in particular sound awful
    -Side quests can become repetitive
-Doesn't look great for a supposedly "next gen" game

    Overall, an
ok game but definitely not the game we we're promised when announced.

And it's not like the entire world is just the city. The middle of the map is the huge city of Chicago, the top left side of the map is nothing but out doors, trees, dirt bike tracks, and trails, along with boats to ride in and all that run stuff. If you go a little lower on the map, it's sort of a rural area with some nice big houses and kind of like a smaller city with theatres and different stores and stuff. And if you go to the south side of the map, you get the kinda gangster neighborhoods, and you also get the industrial complex type of place.

Another thing that's awesome about this city is you can basically get anywhere's you need to go on the entire map, by using a car or boat. Meaning that a body of water is never too far away

I love the variation and different settings in Watch Dogs. Half the fun I have in this game is just exploring the city.

Let me discus a pretty popular topic about this game, It's graphics. The graphics on PS4 and PC(I own Watch Dogs on both)are pretty good looking graphics. The graphics were downgraded a little, but the game still looks pretty impressive. The lighting and reflections at night are VERY impressive, and this game looks SO awesome when it's raining at night, and all the lights are reflecting off of the puddles of rain water. And thankfully, in Watch Dogs, it rains a LOT.

Another VERY impressive thing about this game is the water simulation. Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag's water looked SO amazing. So it's only natural that Watch Dogs would have body's of water that looked just as impressive, because Ubisoft makes both games. Simply put, I've never seen such realistic water in any game I've ever played, it looks THAT good. While your riding in a boat the waves react like they would if you were really in a boat. And if your driving in a boat through the city, you can literally see all the city lights reflected in the water.

The textures of the buildings in the city and the textures or rocks and mountains also look good and seem to have high poly counts. And during the day you'll frequently see the sun, with numerous light shafts shining through trees. The only part of Watch Dogs that I feel could have had better graphics is when it's day time, and the sun's light shafts aren't present, or the suns not shining. In those circumstanes the game seems to be missing something, it's not missing textures or shadows, it just needs a little more lighting during the day and more reflections.

Despite not looking absolutely perfect all the time, Watch Dogs is a CLEAR generational leap forward when comparing it to games like Grand Theft Auto V. GTAV is clearly a last gen looking game, and Watch Dogs is quite obviously a lot better looking titles.

I'm sure if Watch Dogs would have only been released on the PS4 and Xbox One, it would look even better than it does in it's current state.

Besides the graphics of the game, the gameplay is quite fun. I like idea of the cover shooting/hacking gameplay. It reminds me of those "over the top" perspective shooters in a way. And I love the way you can get the perspective of the cameras that you hack, and from that cameras perspective you can hack grenades in enemy's pockets, or blow up an electronic right next to an enemy to kill them. I think the gameplay in this game was really just a great idea by Ubisoft, I've never seen a shooter like this at all. I also love the stealth aspect of it, and I found it addictive to want to stealth your way through areas other than going guns blazing. But the gun play is good too. There's nothing really new about Watch Dog's gunplay, but it's solid nonetheless, and this game has a really good selection of interesting guns.

This game will quite literally keep you busy for well over 100 hours. I've been playing this game for over 100 hours already and haven't 100% the game yet. Of course if I really tried I could have completed it in around 100 hours probably. I just have so much fun messing around the this vast open world that it's taking me this long to complete it. But yes, there's a quite a LOT of content, but it is kind of repetitive, but it's also fun.

Then of course you have the "Digital Trips", which are in effect a game inside the Watch Dogs game. In one mini game, your a giant spider tank, and you basically just have fun destroying cops and scaling the building of Chicago. In another mini game, your sneaking around the city and shutting down generators one by one while trying to evade these robot looking things with spot lights for eyes constantly searching for you.

This game is easily an 8.5/10

Incredible graphics mix with very fun and open gameplay. Hacking adds an interesting and amusing twist. Listening in on text and phone conversations is sometimes hilarious. But it also adds another layer of gameplay depth that is fresh. Kudos for a great game. I don't understand the hate. It almost kept me away from the game.... so glad I took a chance!

My only concern was that the game would be identical to Assassin's Creed IV which I had found monotonous in it's repetition of the same tasks/gameplay.

I'm now at the stage where I have just finished up to Chapter 3 and my overall opinion is that the game is much better than Assassin's Creed IV (maybe I didn't like the historical setting on that one) but still suffers from what, based on playing two Ubisoft games, is extreme repetition of the same tasks.

I'm not going to talk to the graphics because in my mind they look fine. Did they blow me away? No. But hey certainly aren't as bad as some people are making out.

Whilst this is an open world game the city of Chicago actually feels fairly small and one of the biggest problems for me is that despite a couple of differences (Pawnee in particularly) everywhere in the game looks almost identical. With the absence of variety in location this is just further exacerbated by the repetition in the nature of the missions. At the start of the game the hacking idea is new and exciting and I have to confess I do still enjoy the stealth nature of trying to hack into cameras and solve a mission entirely that way. However, after 15+ hours it just becomes far too similar. There are probably around 4 different mission types which effectively repeat throughout the entire game. Therefore, it is very easy to become bored by what you are doing.

The story itself is nothing new and revolutionary and in some respects felt to me a bit like a tv show where they have 22 episodes to fill what could essentially have been done in 8 so everything is long and drawn out just to extend the life of the story rather than because there are jaw-dropping twists and turns that keep you engaged.

It's interesting seeing so many comments on the driving mechanics as from my perspective I actually found it far easier than driving in GTAIV or GTA V. I do share the frustration though that even after breaking line of sight far too often you would almost escape in the car only to have the police/enemy suddenly arrive in oncoming traffic from nowhere and the whole chase to start up again.

The side missions/collectibles I just found incredibly frustrating. The gang hideouts and criminal convoys in particular are actually pretty difficult and frustrating and so don't really inspire completion unless you are someone who has the patience of a saint.

That also leads me to another issue which really was the significant frustration in how easy it is to die and how repetitive this makes everything. Save points are few and far between and often you end up having to repeatedly sit through cut scenes of 5 minutes+ without having an option to skip them. As mentioned on another review it is far too easy to die after taking only a few hits often meaning you don't even get chance to turn round to face an enemy or get to any cover before you are killed. For me the worst thing in any game is forcing people to repeat huge swathes of action over and over again. The only challenge I find here is not putting the controller through the tv!

That being said with the exception of Aiden Pearce the other characters are engaging. The novelty of hacking is interesting and for me the stealth aspects of the game are far superior to those in ACIV and really set it above that. I think with either more variety in the types of mission or differences in location then this would have really helped the game.

In summary, the game is slightly above average for me but is certainly not something that in my mind inspires me to 100% completion or repeat play.

The slow motion or "focus" function becomes lost in the controller and you frequently rediscover it by accidentally activating it from time to time but never actually use it.

The game is an unfinished product with multi platform game breaking bugs. Such as the loading screen bug that prevents me from continuing my game (corrupted save files) Ubisoft has been very sneaky and has avoided the pressure from thousands of players unable to continue playing the game. Others load into the game to find they cannot hack or have their inventories wiped (no guns etc) along with many performance issues with the PC version of the game.

If it weren't for the deplorable customer service and game breaking bugs I would rate the game an 8.5 but in its current state of disrepair with no patch ETA the game is useless to anyone experiencing these issues. Hopefully Ubisoft reads the critic reviews and the 300 Page Official Ubisoft forum thread dedicated to the loading issues and realizes it has angered thousands of people who are now rethinking ever buying another Ubisoft title.

Ubisoft also for me, failed to nail the scale of a bustling city. Hate to say it, but truthfully no one has ever come close to GTA V in replicating a really realistic living breathing city, not even Infamous Second Son. This felt like a wasted opportunity.

I'm disappointed that after reading a few reviews from reviewers that I've held in high regards, I could not seem to get to enjoy Watch Dogs at all like they did. I've bought it on launch day, and since then has only played this dull game 6 times. I'm seriously considering selling this game.

For those who enjoy taking your time to soak in the atmosphere, driving leisurely around open world maps and stopping at certain places to enjoy the atmosphere, this game is not for you. It feels like a botched up job and the ultra big budget marketing campaign feels like an exaggerated lie.

And the driving physics is just plain wrong. For an open world game where the majority of the time you have to traverse the large map by driving, I feel that Ubisoft really crashed and burned on this aspect of the game. There are no two ways about it. Its just dumb elastic car physics. You will fail a lot when trying to turn. It's so unrealistic how the cars turn it felt like a cheap low budget racing game you play on your phone.

No, the reason I'm here is because I played the game, and after 40 hours of endless "stop this crime" missions, I have concluded that Watch Dogs is one of the worst open world games to come out in a very long time. My major issue with the game is how dead and empty it feels. Every single mission is milked and repeated over and over again. Several times I found myself asking, didn't I kill this guy before? Didn't I stop this crime a couple hours ago? Didn't I chase this car yesterday?
I struggle just to explain how repetetive the game is. It's the same with the story. Every single story mission finds you hiding behind a dumpster trying to hack SOMETHING.
Which brings me to the hacking, the main gimmick behind the game. How is it? Well, for an hour or so, it's actually quite fun. But once you realize that every single hack is scripted, the joy ends. You see, the hacking is basically "press 'square' to watch an animation of something happening". Eveything from exploding underground pipes to moving bridges is scripted.
When the ONLY marketing draw of the game is bad, you know the game is screwed. But no, the mediocrity continues.
Before I talk about the driving, let me get this out of the way. As a main character, Aiden is worse than AC3's Connor.
Driving, as you must have heard a thousand times, is awful. There are no propper physics and the car damage belongs to the PS2 era. The only vehicle that was remotely fun to drive is the motorcycle.
In brief, the game is terrible beyond redemption. The only thing that is actually good is the soundtrack.
We all know Watch Dogs 2 is coming out in 2015, or if things go south, 2016, because it's Ubisoft. So let's hope WD2 takes the same road AC2 took: Turn a mediocre game into game of the decade.

The main difference is that this game contains a much more annoying forcible push to multiplayer but in modes that are unimaginative and repetitive. They get really old and really fast and are much worse than the also repetitive single player "side quests".

The city isn't breathing life, it's idiotic. Shoot a person? Police are on to you and you lose "street cred", ok. Run over a civilian? No police but you get a drop in reputation. Cause an accident killing tens of civilians or intentionally push a car to crush pedestrians? Nothing.

Civilians behave idiotically following accidents. Often they remain in burning cars or sit around burning cars waiting to explode. They don't tend to each other, no police goes on the scene and no ambulances come as well, no matter how many dead.

The story is bland (although not as predictive as some say), the world isn't immerssive (nowhere near Assassin's Creed for example), the characters are stereotypical cardboard and some are downright annoying.

Also, Aiden is unable to jump over stuff. Sure, he can vault over obstacles, but he can't jump over a half a meter pit to get from a railing to a roof (the kind of jumps they breeze through in Assassin's Creed).

I am willing to disregard technical issues but the failing in storytelling and gameplay I can't forgive. I'm giving it a 5 because it's slightly better than the PC version

On the other hand it does nt do anything out of this world, the driving is average, the shooting is decent, the hacking is really quite nice but I am disappointed by the fact you can't Deus Ex your way through with minimal mass murder. This game is a lot like the original assassins Creed, there is something missing here but the foundation of a great game is there, except it is no where near as repetitive as Assassins Creed 1 and has a better **** finale with all of Chicago's technology being used against you rather than a billion English soldiers to counter kill. It's freaking unfinished. This is why AAA games can never be trusted. Sometimes I get so disappointed with mainstream games that it forces me to post on this retarded site. Stop paying reviewers off Ubisoft and actually make a decent game.

Tons of side missions and things to find. I would still say GTA V has the best open world city if that helps anyone see where my point of view lies. Some of the music is good, i like how simple it is to change songs or turn music off. I wish I could play my own mp3s but that's neither here nor there.

You can go stealth or full out warfare or a mix and match successfully. Lots of guns to play with and the gadgets are great if you remember to use them. I didn't utilize the slow motion as much as I should've but it's a cool feature. Good, solid game.

Online interaction with other players is seemless, and the game does a great job and being able to transition from side mission to online to campaign. The city is ALIVE. you can walk down the street and eavesdrop on conversations; I've heard at least 40-50 conversations, and they've never repeated once. You can hack text messages and read some pretty hilarious private conversations. People are walking everywhere, cars are all over. It feels just right. I've witness car accidents I've had nothing to do with and watched the drivers get out and argue with each other. I've passed by a motel and watched a women yell at a man from the topstairs balcony about infidelity. I've heard freestyle rap, and caught two people "in the act." You can spy on people inside their homes and observe peeping toms (ironic), people dancing in their underwear, and all sorts of shennanigans.

It's a game with a lot of personality and content. Very solid, but I would hesitate to say it's the "game changer" people were looking for. A solid 8.5-9/10, but a 10 to offset the influx of 0's people gave it minutes after it was released (I.E. without playing it)

It really saddens me all the hate this is getting, it means someone is really ruining a triple-A game for them, at the same time, I wish I hadn't finished the game yet, or if I can repeat some of the epic missions without losing any progression. However, the side missions are satisfying.

All in all, the game is really good, not game-of-the-year good but GTA good. And I don't like comparing it to GTA, since each had its own purpose and both have their merits.
Play it, you won't regret it.

Oh, the multiplayer is a nice addition an might the best I've seen in an open-world game.

the online modes are quite cool, my favourite is the 1 vs 1 hide and seek mode where one tries to hack the other and the other has to find the hacker in his version of the city and kill him. works good and is pure fun.
the story is cool but is stretched and most missions gameplay doesnt vary too much: go to a, hack something, get away go to b, meet somebody and do some other stuff at b... simple structure and almost always hacking stuff and killing or sneaking through ppl involved.
the main charakters are very cool and illustrated nicely, while the main charakter lacks emotion. i dont get why they did this, maybe so the player can replace the dull personality with some of his own attitudes or stuff, i have no idea

i totally dont get why others hate the car controlls that much, they feel the same as GTA5 and also the games is not menat to be a racer so its okay to have simple controlls. also i dont need to have a car crash engine that is detailed as **** thats what i played burnout for.
Side quests are surprisingly rewarding and never get that repetetive and boring cause they are short living fun without repeating random citizen dialogs.

okay finally lets get to what could be improved:
    1) gimme moar easter eggs, its an open world dammit
    2) mission design could have included more ways to beat the targetor simply more posibilities of what to do, sometimes main missions play like side quests
    3) some kind of death matchy open world mmo death match or mmo hacking event
    4) the story overall could be more epic, its cool but there is soo much room to improve.

overall, i like the game much more than the overhyped GTA5.

First off, Watch_Dogs isn't a horrendus game. Its main flaw is the GTA V was released. Whilst GTA V felt like a next gen game in last gen's body, this feels the opposite. However, On certain missions, I found myself not even having to enter the "restricted area" to complete the mission, making the game a matter of finding the right camera to do the job, rather than a game of skill.
The major bane of mine though is the driving. It is awful. Beyond words. Cars feel very cartoony, smashing through anything apart from trees always in a massive cloud of dust and sparks, yet losing little momentum. Cars feel the same, with variations only in speed, and have no weight to them. Another thing about this game (and not only this game) is how the game seems to rush. An example. Your character never walks anywhere. Another example. He gets in a car, and somehow, the engine is started before he even sits down and shuts the door. The whole process of breaking in a car to driving away lasts about 2-3 seconds.
And the character. He is dull. And just seems to mess up not only his own life, but his family's lives. And he never apologises for putting them in danger. Also, for someone who cares sooo much about his family, he doesnt seem too concerned with taking the lives of civilians, stealing their money or spying on them. The best characters in the game are the side characters.
Tech wise, this game has a veneer of prettiness, that is all too easily scraped off. Why is the reflection on the side of a skyscraper a reflection of an empty city road. On every building? Why do the L Train tracks sometimes run nowhere? Why when it rains, do cars not get wet, or splash as they go through puddles? Why are there so many people in Chicago related to Olympic athletes? And why oh why is Chicago so lifeless and devoid of traffic?
Storyline wise, Im not sure sometime what is going on. I am aware of the general direction, that he is avenging the death of his niece, but missions confuse me sometimes. Why was Jordi holding some people hostage in "Not the Pizza Guy"? Why will no one meet Aiden face to face without leading him on a merry chase?"
Chicago itself is a dull place. Too quiet, boring and lifeless. Look at Los Santos. Full of character, always something happening, a joy to explore. Chicago has none of this. There is no inspiring areas to play about in, everything just feels the same.
Music in the game is terrible, so much so that I switched it off. Look at GTA V. The music hand picked to suit the feeling of the city Enough said.
All together, Watch_Dogs is an OK game at best, but is by no means a next gen game. Wait for GTA V to come out and show Ubisoft what a next gen open world should be. Ubisoft should seriously consider finishing their games before release, this has the same unfinished feel as the AC games. From now on, I shall not be buying any open city game unless the Rockstar Logo is on it, I have been massively dissapointed by everything else.

First of all, i will start with the main character which is Aiden Pearce. This is the character that the player will play as and this person comes out for some unfortunate events that changes his life forever, and then of course Aiden will have to go and try to make up for this mess that has happened.

I think that the graphics within this game is absolutely stunning, i got the feeling that i actually would be in the city of Chicago. Not only the graphics was great, but the animations of the people going around of the world was really pretty as well. One of the things i noticed was someone in a park was playing around with a football, and i was amazed how realistic it looked.

The whole story in Watch Dogs could at some times be a bit confusing, and it lost me a few times because i didn't really find it that interesting. The campaign missions was sometimes very similar - go here - shoot them - hack this - do this puzzle - go to next mission like. But the missions also had their moments and some of them was REALLY FUNNY.

There is one more thing i need to talk about, and that's the physics of objects within the game. I really think that they nailed the physics and how much damage the objects do on the car, it really suits the game well and i enjoyed them.

All in all, this was a great game and i enjoyed it most of the times i would recommend anyone who reads this to go and try it out, because it is a fun experience and it's different with all the hacking going on within the city itself.

Now, despite its numerous failings in both story and at times graphics and overall visuals, as well as its failure to deliver on several early promises, Watch Dogs is far from a bad game. It is a really enjoyable and replayable experience, even if it is a highly flawed one as well. As with many similarly flawed titles of its genre and caliber, the main attraction and the main thing that works the most in Watch Dogs is in fact its open-world setting and the relative freedom players are allowed in deciding what they want to do or where they want to go, as well as when and why or why not. Choice and hacking capabilities alone make this a worthwhile title to play, even if it isn’t quite the hit they were looking for. I for one certainly enjoyed my time with this game, as well as the fact that it retained similarities to their other recent titles- such as Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, without going overboard into those territories at all. If there’s one thing that can be said about it, it’s that Watch Dogs is certainly one of a kind- even if it isn’t because it’s sailed into uncharted territory, and is only because there hasn’t really yet been a game quite like it in conceptual terms. If they do choose to make it a series, which seems viable considering it sold pretty well, I’d be interested to see the hopefully improved sequel and to compare its rights and wrongs to those of this title as well.

Concept: Explore open-world Chicago as the revenge-seeking, trenchcoat and ballcap clad hacker Aiden Pearce. Enjoy some cheap thrills and spills, laugh at the mostly overdone story moments, and torment the people of the city with environmental chaos and hijacking of the citywide OS employed by a corrupt corporation.

Graphics: The game looks good on most consoles and devices, however there are times when it is visually muddied, and it doesn’t like up to the frame rate or overall graphical awareness originally promised as well.

Sound: There are several tunes in-game that work and several that don’t. The accompanying score works in most instances where the licensed content doesn’t.

Playability: With the exception of the odder than not vehicle controls, the other mechanics handle fantastically. Naturally, because of the vehicle controls, pretty much any of these mechanics being used during chases are more frustrating than not.

Entertainment: It’s in its own class and genre thanks to the exceptional hacking abilities afforded to your character, and overall it’s quite an enjoyable experience. Also, there are some doge jokes to be made about and in the game. I kid you not. Seriously.

    Replay Value: High.

    Overall Score: 8.0

This is a really fun game. An open-world sandbox with an added element of open-world elements through the hacking mechanism, which I must admit is far more fluid than I had anticipated. I will take off a point though because there's no driveable helicopters or aircrafts in general, which feels sort of limiting at times. It does make sense too however with how some parts of the game are structured, if you could just fly you wouldn't bother to solve half the puzzles within the game that require you to vault around, especially the CTOS Towers.
There are plenty of weapons, all fit nicely on a radial wheel and are categorized with added secondaries like frags and IEDs. You can craft on the go anytime which is also nice, though unrealistic. But for the sake of convenience and gaming-practicality, its a good mechanism that shouldn't and doesn't conform to reality.
The campaign is very lengthy and nice with lots of drama, tragedy, etc and there are also plenty of optional side activities that are not necessary but are rewarding. I got this game the day after release date, and I'm still having fun playing it. Also there is a season pass I did not get yet, but I'm sure that adds even more to the content. I did get it on the PS4 however so I did get some bonus missions which were quite fun too. There's also a great variety of online segments to even further the amount of fun you can have and adds a level of competitive play.

To me, it was a great game, and worth every dollar I spent on it. With a somewhat small library of games to choose from for the PS4 atm, this stands tall with giants like Infamous SS as one of the best available titles right now on the new system. I'm sure that holds true for the XB1 too atm

    For Starters-
You get the people that hate the game for the graphics, now i don't get this at all.
The graphics them self are just purely beautiful, and if you hate on them it's either your consoles fault or there is seriously something wrong with you in general.

Then.. you get the people that hate on the game for not offering a very good storyline or with very good voice actors or a well written script.
The game itself actually tries its best to pull you in, yes it has some parts to where it would seem a bit too bland, but Ubisoft actually did a really great job compared to the other "rushed" games that they've had in the past.
This game wasn't rushed, neither was it underdeveloped either, they actually took the time to make sure that the game you're getting isn't the proverbial trash that you would see now a days with games that hadn't put anything to nothing at all to developing a game.

Then you have the people that complain about the game not working at all for their system.
You can find many answers to seek help for your problem, but obviously if the game can't run on your console then it's not the games fault.

Take a look at all of the recent patches, fixes, and updates that they've been releasing lately.
They've fixed the game up so much, you couldn't tell how much of a mess it was at release.
For all those who returned this game just because it had a few minor "problems" with it, then shame on you.

For those of you actually wanting a real review out of this game, then here it is.

The Story stars out by showing you the life of a brilliant hacker named Aiden Pierce whom using his skills, along with the notorious hacker group "DedSec" to show the citizens that the ctOS corporation isn't doing their job right with the technology they've developed.
The game goes right into showing you, the protagonist having a "hit" on you to take you out once and for all by a mysterious counter hacker trying to get rid of you.
Two Hit-Men then go after you while you're out and about with your neice and her two children. The problem is, when they had tried to shoot you, they end up shooting the youngest of them all and ending her life.
The first part of the game to where you are able to do anything, is an interrogating scene to where your job is to get information out of the Hit-Man that went after you.
Of course, none of it is working so the game tells you to shoot him in the head. Pretty straight forward.

You then are shown a scene to where there's a dead body on the ground, and one of the gun men try's to shoot you.
Your Back-Up or Partner shoots the guy down, and you wonder where the hell this guy has been since you were in that room beforehand.
You then need escape past the police and get out of the building, but it isn't as easy as it sounds.
You need to make sure you're not spotted, and of course this is where the hacking part of the game starts.
    -
You start off by hacking into cameras to see where your path is ahead of you, and unlock doors that are inaccessible for you.
After you use the camera on the outside to unlock the first door, you are introduced to one of your first "Hacking" gadgets you can use.
    The Distractor.
You grab some electrical scraps to craft the weapon, and throw it towards the other way.
You set it off so the guard is out of the way so you can proceed to the next area.
You see the Captain of the police and a few police officers being interviewed by a news station in a bar, and sneak past them through the back (Or.. walk right in their line of sight and fail the mission... your choice of course)
You'll see a few security guards chatting through a glass door, so you'll want to hide to the side of it, or just not be near it at all.
You'll call up your DedSec buddies, and they'll tell you to find the security guard with access codes to the servers mainframe to cause a "Stadium Blackout". After finding him by hacking a few cameras, you'll have access to a new weapon called "Blackout". You'll select the weapon and press the trigger button to make the whole place go dark.
You sneak past the security guards, and then have to get away from them by using a car giving to you by your partner or run the whole way there (not the smartest idea.. go with the car or a car in general).
At this point, there's a lot of action going on, and i have to say that i was impressed by the amount of it.

After all of it, you can either go on campaign missions, online missions / activities, or.. do whatever you want.
And this is just a small portion of the game.

Added up you're getting MANY hours out of this games campaign alone.
Overall, I'm impressed with the sheer take that Ubisoft has taken with this game, and it was well worth the wait.

The gameplay feels good, the controls are both on console and on PC pretty smooth when you are on foot. The aiming is precise and the freerunning is also enjoyable even if you play with keyboard and mouse. The driving, however, is not even close to finished. The cars don't behave like cars but more like bumper cars. You also cannot shoot while driving which leaves you only the hacking as defense while driving.
The hacking is also one critical point. You can use the hacking feature, but don't have to. In fact, besides of some puzzles, it is much easier to shoot your way with a silenced weapon, than to hack your way through the levels.
You also gain Exp during missions which gives you the option to skill more unnecessary hacking abilities. Funny, how the main theme of the game can be so obsolete.
As obsolete as the hacking is also the reputation system. If you rescue people from crimes you gain reputation which as insignificant effects on your game. If you have a bad reputation, people will call the cops when they recognize you, if you have a good reputation nothing happens.

    The Missions:

The missions are always the same: follow someone, hack into a system, jump from camera to camera with your hacker abilities and unlock a door. Then shoot everybody and escapy by car. The last part is always the scariest, because the driving is really bad.

There are several side missions which consist of stopping people from reaching a certain destination, killing people, rescue people, scare people and shoot up gang hideouts.
Also existent: mini games and god knows how many collectibles.
Funny: the most fun part of the side missions and mini games are chess puzzles.

    The story:

Awful. Just awful. Predictable and boring. After the first Act everyone with an average IQ knows how the story will end eventually. Ubisoft has not learned anything about narratives in the last years. It takes the topic of hacking and global connection way too serious.

    Overall:

Much potential, wasted for the sake of making fast cash. It really has potential and I hope they will learn from this mistake named Watch Dogs and correct it in Watch Dogs 2. Currently it's not match for GTA V and can compare itself maybe to the Saints Row series.

There is still a long way to go.

I think it was smart for Ubisoft to delay this game and release it during a very dry period on the next gen platforms because if this game were to come out along side other triple a titles I don't think many people would even bother finishing it.
This is not a bad game game, but it is also did not live up to all the hype it received.

This is not a bad game game, but it is also did not live up to all the hype it received.
The story was mediocre with a very obvious plot twist that takes place.
The game also tries making you feel sorry for the main character however his behaviour does not help with this.
He literally slaughters more people than any of the villains in this game and also manipulates people into doing his work putting their lives at risk, and all of this isn't for him to gain anything, it is all to avenge someones death.
This also put his sister at risk which caused him to kill even more people in order to save her, why is her life more important than the people he kills? There is also a mission where he needs to take on someones identity but he is forced to kill that person first, during this mission him and his accomplice are upset and uneasy about the fact that he has to kill someone even though he would have already killed a good number of people before this mission.
He also steals cars, and hacks bank accounts in his free time and we are meant to feel sorry for this guy?
The gameplay was not too great either, a lot of the time you have to wait for a button command to appear on the screen before performing an action. For example, simply being next to a car and pressing triangle will not let you enter the car, you need to position yourself next to the door and wait for the command to come up, this gets annoying when you’re being chased by the police and you have to quickly switch between vehicles.
There is also a problem the cover system has because the only way to get out of cover is to push back on the left stick and wait for him to to stop crouching leaving yourself exposed. Press circle will make him vault over the cover and pressing cross will make him run to the nearest cover, doing this over and over will make him run between 2 covers repeatedly. This will get annoying if someone runs up behind you when you’re behind cover and you need to sprint somewhere else.
The game itself was decent and the hacking elements adds a unique experience which do make game stand out so it has potential to improve.
The game also sets itself up for a sequel which we will probably see in the next 2 years, hopefully they can improve on the flaws this game had and make that game turn out great.

Combat in Watch Dogs is great with some good shooting mechanics and it has stealth if you want to be a ninja in a trench coat. The weird thing about Watch Dogs is how they screw up one of the most important things in a free roaming game, the driving. It has some weird physics and some simply bad driving mechanics. I haven’t written anything about the story yet well that’s because it’s quite bad and the main character Aiden Pearce is as interesting as a rock.
Well the story about Aiden Pearce who lost his niece in a ordered hit on him now his out for some vigilante justice. I really like the game but don’t buy a ps4 or an xbox one just for Watch Dogs.

Get to where they are, press a button, and you're done, off to the next.
The other 'collectibles' are sidemissions: clearing out gang hideouts, destroying criminal convoys, etc.; but all of these are simple kill-em-all-and-be-done-with-it. Yes, you can choose whether you want to go in guns blazing or if you want to be sneaky, but there's not much of a difference. The sneaky approach utilizes hacking, but the hacking mechanics aren't interesting, to say it kindly. Hacking is way too easy, and there's only 1 type of puzzle. At least in AC4 there were 3 or 4 different kinds of puzzles when hacking...

The other major letdown is the fact that there's tons of multiplayer issues. Every time I tried to initiate multiplayer, the game told me it was unable to connect to public sessions, and that I should check my NAT type. My NAT is type 1, and noone on the forums could tell me why NAT type 1 was wrong (and that's correct, it shouldn't be wrong at all).
Even if you manage to access multiplayer, every form of multiplayer apart from 1v1 requires PlaystationPlus.

Visually, the game fails to delives too. It's graphics are on a par with last years GTA V for the PS3 - dissappointing for a PS4 game to say the least.

It's sad to see that a game that could've been brilliant ends up being mediocre, and saying that is pretty generous...

First off, I hadn't followed any news about this game prior to launch. I hate being disappointed because of hype. The only knowledge I had was that it's a sandbox game with a vigilante hacker in it.

At first I was quite surprised finding myself playing a version of GTA. I wasn't quite sure if it was a good surprise or not. The controls didn't seem quite right and the overall feeling was not like I expected it to be. The beginning seemed a bit forced and I couldn't play the game for long at a single sitting.

It didn't take me too long to get over the controls and it seemed quite enjoyable after getting some skills unlocked. The invasions irritated me at first, but once I got the mechanics behind it, I started to love the concept. Hacking is usually quite fun, though a bit simple to my taste. There could be another dimension to it.

    My problems with the game:
    1. I expected there to be more possibilities for playing smart. I don't mind violence in games in general, but the vigilante theme would benefit from having less violent solutions in general IMO. Too GTA now.
    2. Super repetitive and simple side missions. Some of them could be more random events you'd pick up when walking in the streets and it would force you to react on the spot. Now the events wait for you to pick it up when it suits you.
    3. The immersion is just not there. I think it's because I'm annoyed with the inconsistency of the main character. The moral compass is spinning like crazy. It's too easy just drop this and to pick up another game.

Overall it's a fine game, but there's so much missed potential. l suppose there will be a sequel, but I'll wait for the reviews before buying it. While I don't regret buying this game, it's not quite the unforgettable masterpiece it had the potential to be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say I was heavily disappointed by this game. Personally, I had been looking forward to this for a long time, as soon as the concept was announced I was on board and was excited when things geared up to the release date...this quickly changed after a few hours of Gameplay.
    My main issues include:
    1.) Generic/repetitive gameplay
I was initially impressed and enjoyed the hacking abilities provided to us in the game as they were new and unique to gameplay in general on such a large format but after a couple of missions the couple of distraction/explosion options became very repetitive, you can only trip a car alarm or raise a forklift to grasp the attention of enemies so many times before it becomes a bore. I know there's only so much that could be done but surely Ubisoft could have held back on some stuff or added more as the game progressed for a bit of variety. In the end it dwindled down to 3 types of gameplay 1.) Sneak/stealth through an area to hack a box; 2.) Escape from or destroy police/fixers who are chasing after you; 3.) Shoot out/kill a bunch of people. Doing the same 3 things with slight variety over and over really does take its toll.
    2.) Very poorly written storyline
Incredibly generic and boring, a white guy with stuble seeks revenge on the death of family member? Come on Ubisoft, how cliche can you get? The plot for the game really just revolves getting revenge on the people who killed your niece/kidnapped your sister/or (spoilers) killed Clara to some degree. I think a companies writing is very poor when they have to rely on the deaths/suffering of female characters to create drama/plot. I thought this was 2014, can we not get some decent writing that doesn't follow the damsel in distress story-line?
The areas of plot I was interested in were completely brushed over. The Human Trafficking storyline was only relevant for a couple of missions and was never heard from again (even though that's what Ubisoft marketed the game about) which was disappointing as I think it's such a powerful issue in our society today, especially one that's not very well known about, I think exposing this issues in Watch Dogs could have opened up some new boundaries.
    3.) Poorly done characterisation
Aiden was a rather bland and unlikable main character, there was nothing notable or unique about him that could make him stand out. He's just another generic white guy with stuble, there's nothing wrong with white male characters but mixing things up now and then really doesn't hurt.
Characters that were completely brushed aside (i.e. Default) without any reasoning. For example, there's a massive build up and hunt down for the character Default but it all ends in you hitting him over the head in the street and walking away? It just felt so weak, we know nothing about that character, hell we don't even know what he looks like.
All in all most characters just weren't fleshed out, they had no depth and therefore I felt nothing for them when they went through hardships/died/betrayed/etc. I thought the writing for pretty much all the characters was done to a low standard, AC2 proves Ubisoft can create interesting characters/characters of diversity/strong female characters so I'm not very tolerant to their standard in Watch Dogs.
    4.) Rubbish side missions
Extremely repetitive, definitely a case of quantity over quality. Even side missions I found really interesting/liked doing initially got boring because of the sheer amount of them (i.e. Crimes detected and Gang Hideouts) and ones that weren't repetitive and were actually interesting ended up having a poor execution (I.e. Missing Persons mission).
    5.) Bad/clumsy controls
I know people will always agree/disagree on this concept when it came to games but personally I found the handling, especially with driving, to be very poorly done. I found the controls to be very clumsy in some areas which made some missions/gameplay a bit frustrating.

This is by no means the worst game I've ever played, Watch Dogs did have some unique concepts and enjoyable moments but overall I found myself bored/frustrated while playing this game rather than excited/interested, which really says something for all the hype surrounding it prior to release. I'm actually glad I got this game as a gift because if I'd paid for it myself I would have felt like I lost out on a bit of money.

This game is a revelation. Nothing like GTA, unless you play it like a too-bit criminal going all guns blazing (which the designers have given as an option to accommodate different user playing styles) there is way more subtlety to this game than just stealing a car and blowing stuff up. If played correctly you are taken into the world of hackers and basically being able to do whatever you want with the click of a smart phone.

The more you play the more you learn. The game is open world so it can be played at ones pace, do what you feel like whenever you feel like kind of feel. The game is packed full of mini games and side missions to keep you occupied, or you can simply roam the streets creating mayhem (without anyone knowing it's you). The main story is quite compelling and gives nothing away early on, longevity also excellent.

The graphics are excellent, although some people say they aren't (no idea why). Gameplay and overall feel to the game is very good including driving, free-running an shootouts. The game also has really addictive online features, facing off against other hackers to name just one.

Overall Watch Dogs is an excellent game. Different to all the norm free roaming games out there. People are disappointed with this game because it wasn't what they were expecting.......THAT'S THE IDEA! ITS DIFFERENT! A revelation compared to the majority of other YAWN roaming games.

Looks fantastic on the PS4. The shooting is top notch, if not a bit easy. The driving does need some work (the obvious comparison being GTA). I found the driving mechanics to be more akin to an arcade game than a realistic simulation. But that isn't really the point of this game. Once you ramp a bridge on a motorcycle going full throttle in slow motion you'll say, "oh, that's why I bought this game."

Missions kept me entertained, but after a few hours do get repetitive. The hacking works very well most of the time (there were a few times where I attempted to hack a camera but triggered an explosion instead). Overall the game's aspects come together very well. Like many reviewers have said Watch Dogs 2 will most likely knock it out of the park, but for now enjoy a great first entry in the series.

Absolutely not what it was marketed to be- if this defines next gen, then best to take a few year gaming hiatus. But we know that advertising ploy is simply not the truth. The marketing was a lie and we know that from playing the game: dull game play, keep holding that button down to hack, worthless plot, last gen graphics, poor driving, awful third person view (how long do you really want to stare at the back of this stereotypical pointless character's dull jacket), lack of freedom/reward/fun... "Fanboys" is such an overused and meaningless insult. Fact of the matter is that yes I would rather be playing GTAV than this every time I try to play this game. I accept the fact that this was a waste of my sixty bucks. Perhaps the fanboys of this game cannot and so they defend it while calling those who compare it to GTAV "fanboys" But the games are very comparable and watch dogs fails against GTAV in almost every regard. Maybe if they hadn't have taken themselves so seriously (if the had taken that cue from GTAV), that the best games combine seriousness and self reflective humor in balance, then this game wouldn't have been such an epic let down. Did you like Grand Theft Auto? Or Infamous 1&2? If so, this game should feel very familiar to you. The whole time I played Watch Dogs, it reminded me of a mix between GTA and Infamous, with the ability to hack into your surrounds. This wasn't a problem for me, as I love both of these franchises, but overall the game just felt very familiar.

It trys to be new and exciting with the hacking mechanic by allowing you to raise bollards or blow up steam vents during car chases and cook a grenade on a unsuspecting guard, watching him fumble manically as he attempts to grab and throw his beeping demise away. Initially this gives a false sense of choice; try stealth, try hacking or all out action. But soon you realize that hacking makes the game a breeze, allowing any seasoned gamer to slide through without an interruption and meet its underwhelming conclusion.

The story itself doesn't even sound interesting from the outset. You are trench coat wearing, gruff-voiced Aiden Pearce and you're out for revenge because some hitmen murdered your niece. So nothing original there, in fact that sounds like the set-up to any action movie from the 80s or 90s. But the important thing to consider is how are you gaining your revenge? Well through murdering other people... who probably have nieces themselves and other family members who would miss him. So Aiden on-top of being a mass-murder, is a hypocrite. This detached me from the character, I couldn't relate to his motivations or methods. Some people may argue; its your actions that are controlling Aiden, and you're deciding to kill those people. True I'm the one pressing the R2 button as a lodge shotgun shells into a gang members head but Watch Dogs down right condones and expects you kill and murder your way through the story missions, by giving you a huge arsenal of weaponry and placing you in situations which don't allow stealth. This is not Deus Ex, i defy you to do a non-lethal run.

So where the protagonist failed for me, is there a redeeming antagonist that pushes you to actually finish the game, so you can confront and stop them? First of all, a lets consider that Ubisoft created Vaas (from Far Cry 3) who was one of the greatest villains in recent memory. So you can understand my anticipation for this game and expecting at least a decent villain. Did they recapture that magic? Well... no is the answer to that. The antagonists in this game are a bizarre choice, considering the world Ubisoft is trying to create . You'd expect a game which reflects current world issues about a lack of privacy from the government and supposed big corporations spying on their customers and knowing their darkest secrets. Would call for a CEO or owner of the so-called Blume corporation to be the main villain. But no, its a mob boss. Isn't that a staple of the Grand theft Auto series? I was just expecting something different, but that's the common theme with Watch dogs, its just painfully generic. Everything it attempts to do has been done better in older and better games. It which stands fine by its own but falls short of recent open world games like Grand Theft Auto 5.

Perhaps Watch Dog's biggest downfall is its repetitive nature. While the story missions remain fairly fresh throughout, the side content has a different fate. It has to be the greatest example of quantity over quality I've ever seen in a game. Why have 20 fixer missions when you can have 40 and they're all pretty much the exact same gameplay segment over and over again, except in a different location. I shouldn't feel like I'm completing a chore when playing a video game, they're the opposite of that. They're the epitome of procrastination, putting you off completing meaningful tasks and work and instead move some pixels around a screen. The worst offender is the drinking mini game, if you want the trophy you have to complete 11 drinking mini games against 3 opponents which can take upwards of 4 hours. Because the mini game is so damn difficult. I've actually had a harder time progressing through this, than I have the campaign mode. That's just silly.

Overall, a game which is above average because it has nice graphics and good controls. But as open world games go, this will just keep you occupied until a new GTA, Red dead or Fallout comes out, its worth a purchase but maybe at a reduced price.

I attempted to record the mission, just to prove how idiotic the game is, but my Ps4 only recorded the last 2 seconds of gameplay. I tried to start a record session, and the game didn't even record. My Ps4 has had 0 issues with any other game in the topic of recording.

The Graphics are obviously downgraded. You should not allowed to fabricate gameplay at any press conference just to garner attention. Every model except Aiden looks as if they were made out of clay - especially the cars and environment during the day. Speaking of cars, do the designers have drivers licenses? Have they ever drove more than one car? Most of the cars drive the same - like ****

Game receives a lowly 3 out of 10 for the innumerable amount of game breaking errors (that example was one of tens) and the impudence the designers treated us with.

Is it the perfect dream game that everyone has awaited their entire life for? Probably not. But, it's a really good game.

Comparing it to GTA V I would give Watch Dogs the nod as far as actual gameplay goes. The missions seem more interesting on WD for the most part, though it's close. But, GTA V does have a better overall story and more interesting characters.

    Gameplay:
    1) The controls are not intuitive on PC controls. The use of middle mouse button clicks and then scrolling to control menu is slow, cumbersome and frequently inaccurate. Its impossible this was not highlighted in play testing.
    2) The crouch hide mechanism is daft. It only works when you are in specific area otherwise you character will just stand then taking fire. And then when it works is still doesn't work corretly and you'll find yourself hiding in the wrong side of a barrier.
    3) Frustrating elements of having to take down (non lethal enemies). This is stupid. You are tasked to attack and probably kill tons of enemies armed to the teeth but you must melee them to take them "down". Totally useless especially when these target can killed by explosives accidentally and you have to restart.
    4) When you finish the game you cant redo old missions you can only replay those mostly crappy VR games.
    5) Driving controls are crap in the game and the game forces you to use vehicles that you dont want. If you enter a mission (first time) with a vehicle you want you get one try. If you fail and restart it will remove everything you had before that like you own vehicle. So sometimes these driving/chasing missions are depend on luck if you get a good vehicle for you. Other times they force you to use crap vehicles. This just feels forced and a waste of time.

    Technical (on PC)
I tried to like this game but its a horrible pile of code on the PC. With a decent rig the game will and sometimes take out the OS as well. It also will degrade performance if you restart / reload too many times. Then game will get gradually slower until unplayable (about 3-5 reloads / mission restarts) then you have to restart you the game or your computer to get back to normal performance. Tested on two different machines and a google of performance issues on Watch Dogs will give you tons of hits.

Lack of in game save of PC is just stupid. You cant select different save slots etc you only have checkpoint saves that you cant chose. So you something goes bad and it check points you then you are practically screwed. In essence you cant experiment because unless you played a mission before you dont want to end up in a situation where you experimented but are check pointed badly. The only alternative is then restarting the entire mission. Possibly a game limitation for old (PS2) era limitations but surely not for modern consoles and definitely not for PC.

I see such high meta scores, I'm wondering if Ubisoft are paying them off or something... sounds fishy.

the hacking aspect is good but it needed more. you can only hack a few things and most things don't work as you would want. example is police chases. when the cops are called something called a "ctOS" scan is started, which is supposed to be a series of all the cameras in the city looking for you. the problem is, it doesn't work that way. it puts a bubble on your mini map and if you are in it a % indicator goes up, if it hits 100% the cops TELEPORT to you.

the police chases itself aren't to bad. unlike GTA 5 cops do not have ESP. but you cannot shoot while driving. only hack. and if you are on foot. you die VERY fast.

there are various side activities to do, but most are chores or boring in general.

probably the best part about the game is the invasions for online play. players can join your single player world and hack you or stalk you. you have to find them before they hack you (it gives you a small search area first) it's unique because it makes you paranoid. thankfully you can turn this mode off, but it resets your multiplayer rank completely if you do.

there are some other online modes but for the most part they aren't special.

overall the game is only slightly above average. it wasn't worth the wait. GTA 5 is a much better game, has much more content as well. if you NEED a new game, watchdogs isn't bad. but if are content with what you have, just pass it or wait for a price drop.

They have been making this game for over 4+ years, having several massive delays to "bring it up to quality standards" while boasting some of the most intrusive and annoying DRM (with outages at release like SimCity) there is just to have pirates crack the game a whopping week before release? I mean, holy f*ck Ubisoft, you screwed up big time with this one.

As this game is a colossal failure beyond my abilties to write in the form of sentences, I'm simply going to list all the problems in this "Sandbox" game:

Watch_Dogs automatically tries to force you into the "Good Karma" route as doing literally any actual "random" event on the world map is just "DURRR, EYM A CRIME SOLVUR, I LISTEN IN ON YUR PHOON N DEN GO 2 SUM PLEYC 2 WITNES SHET LOL". Playing as a bad guy? Well, you'll have no opportunity to say, take advantage of a situation but the worst crime here is the system itself. You need to stay close enough before & when the crime is being commited and If you step in just a little when the game deems it to be 99% close to a crime being commited (as symbolized by the PROBABILITY OF BEING A VICTIM TO A CRIME PERCENTAGE METER above a person's head), both parties (the robber and the one getting robbed, for example) will both fitz into a seizure, ignore eachother and start to casually powerwalk away from the location, and the game saying "HAHA, YOU FAILED TO PREVENT A CRIME, THE CRIMINAL SAW YOU THROUGH THE EYE IN HIS NECK AND NOW HE WILL GO AND COMMIT A CRIME ANOTHER DAY XD". It's just development stupidity beyond my imagination. What did I do subsequently? I shot the criminal in the back of his head and went away smiling. But shame that I got no reward stopping a future crime, nor did I get the opportunity to loot his corpse as the only thing I gained was a "MURDERER!!!!" popup at the top right of my screen.

The police in this game has to be some of the worst I've seen in a while. They are either ignorant, deaf and dumb clutz when you are sneaking around, taking them out loudly with a baton or they're all super-cops, unloading a 100% accuracy barrage of bullets from all directions after rushing to a scene at 160 km/h because they got a report that someone got bumped by a car. I even had the audacity to try and lose them by driving in reversed traffic at full speed in a sports-car. Nope nope nope, said Ubisoft, they have cybernetic implants along with a 600% boost to their handling and breaking capabilities when chasing you, Ubisoft states while jerking off. Don't ask why, our game is perfect and completely justifiles a 60€ pricetag that will drop faster than my libido after orgasm once people start reading reviews for our rubbish. Another police problem would be that patrol cars don't react to traffic laws being broken whatsoever. Drive in opposite lane? No problem. Bump and scratch into people? No problem. Be inches away from driving over a dozen pedestrians? No problem.

Another huge immersive problem would be the people themselves in the city. Apart from a few heavily scripted instances, the personality and overall consistency of the inhabitants are completely off. I've seen dozens of hobos playing virtual reality videogames on their high-end phones while listening in on people that "recently had a panic attack" talk in very deep, collective and calm voices about casually commiting illegal activity. And when that Isn't blatantly obvious, there's also the fact that ALL pedestrians are capable of literally pouncing away from your car If you approach them at even miniscule speeds. This includes eldery people and while seeing an old lady in her 80-90's spasm 4 feet away from my car's hood within the blink of an eye, It's not very realistic while also concreting in the "Good Karma" ideals that the developers have in mind, not letting you do mass murders so easily or realize the absurdly bad car physics to hitting a human body. The cutscenes also look abyssmal with every single NPC set of teeth resembling the detail with that of carved bricks of limestone.

Cars and every aspect of the driving element in this game is copypasted from Sleeping Dogs. While functional, It's FAR from what people expect in this kind of game and more importantly, it's way different from what was advertised as the only "dynamic" thing about cars in this game is that a few plastic covers will fall off after enough damage. The fact that some cars will THROW themselves on the horn 0.0000001 seconds if you slightly bump their rear end is also another example of horrid game design when combined with the constantly occuring scenario where I'd be driving through an intersection, have a truck drive past, I speed up, and the truck suddenly slams on his breaks as he's 85% done crossing the intersection, causing me to crash into his backside because the turd AI in this game told him "SCARY SCARY SITUATION, HE CLOSE, U SLAM BREAKS NOW OK?" It's cheap, It's false advertising and It's Watch Dogs. Stay away.

The story is quite good, with a couple of plot twists, trust me, and the character is not generic and the story isn't only based around revenge. If you've actually played the game, you'd know.

Watch Dogs is a memorable experience, and I'm looking forward to what they do with the series.

Considering that, this game is is almost a complete failure in what it tried to do and what it didn't accomplish.
Firstly, consider the graphics. Considered the first "truly next gen" experience, as it was being billed, this game on the next-gen consoles looks almost exactly like the last gen stuff. There is no way it looks better than InFamous did back in March and, in particular, the facial features were awful. I've seen better facial features on characters in games dating back a year or two. The graphics are a definite let down.
Next is the gameplay mechanics. The hacking system is the big thing that seperates this game from other GTA-style sandbox games. It doesn't do enough to truly make a name of itself in the genre and that is extremely unfortunate. The genre is in desperate need of an original idea and this didn't quite deliver. The hacking is ok but it's not enough to separate this game from the pack.
The story is fairly standard but it's passable. The problem I have are with the characters, in particular the main character, Aiden Pierce. They try to bill you as a Vigilante throughout the game but, make no mistake about this, Aiden is a bad guy. He's only got one redeemable trait and that's his love for his family but that doesn't get in the way of him easily killing people for no reason and stealing from people with cancer (yes this is true). They try to make him seem like a poor soul trapped in the world he's living in but the fact of the matter is that he enjoys what he does and he'll never redeem himself because he enjoys it so much. There's so much hypocrisy involved with this character it's astounding and the writers here failed to deliver with him and pretty much everyone else in the game. I certainly won't remember a single character from this game in the next month and that's the sign of bad design
In the end about the only thing I enjoyed with this game was the online multiplayer stuff, even though that was not handle in the best way, and the fact that there are alot of side missions and distractions to keep you from realizing you're playing a game that, not only doesn't live up to the hype, but isn't even close to the quality of game that InFamous or GTA 5 were. Ubisoft is billing this as a new flagship franchise here and I can only hope that repeat what they did with Assassin's Creed 1 and 2. While 1 is not very good at all, 2 will redeem the franchise just enough to make it a AAA title going forward. Very disappointed by how things turned out here.

Very disappointed with the game. The main character is so bland and the story itself is very generic. Ubisoft clearly tries way too hard to make this their Grand Theft Auto and congratulations, it's a sandbox game with no heart and soul.

I wasn't caught up at all in the hype for this game. And, never am for any game really. I just wait until a game comes out and then I see how it is. Sometimes the game looks fantastic but other times it looks terrible. Overall, it is probably comparable to GTA V's graphics. But, not better. One would think since Ubisoft is such a big company and they are now dealing with a more powerful system it would be better. The gameplay is fair to good. Depending on what you're doing in the game. Nothing really stands out as being great though in that regard. Certainly not much that is very fresh. The hacking is cool though and a nice feature. The driving isn't nearly as difficult as people are making it out to be. It just takes some practice. And, of course, it depends on which car you are driving. Some cars just don't have good handling, that's all. So, choose to mostly drive the cars that do have good handling. The story is the weakest part of this game by far. It's weak, standard, and sappy. It gets a little better as it goes on though. The characters for the most part are forgettable. Anyway, it gets an 8 from me because despite its flaws it somehow manages to be a lot of fun. There are good missions and good side missions and enjoyable activities. Lots of content here too, lots of bang for your buck. Expand

Watch Dogs is a game that carries a lot of hype about being a true next gen game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. I feel it's nearly impossible for anything to live up to the level of hype this game received. It is my intention to review this title fairly without any level of hype or hatred for this game as I never got in to the hype and I do not hate Watch Dogs.

The narrative in Watch Dogs showed promise at first but quickly starts to fall apart and not just due to the cliche vigilante revenge story. Certain narrative decisions make it little to hard to believe that anyone would make that decision and Intelligent characters start acting irrationally at almost the on set of the Pearce family saga and many players will put together the entire story line about halfway through. It's not that it isn't a fun story, it's just painfully obvious.

A game I originally thought to have more in common with Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs is in every way an open world game in line with Grand Theft Auto and like GTA it falls victim to some of the common issues in almost all open world games. While it is obvious the game is also running on some last gen tech, I do not count off for that due to that being something of the norm at the moment, but we need to move passed this phase. Even with that said graphically I feel that it is a mixed bag. The game looks simply amazing at times, only to fall off at others. I perfect example of this is how almost every character outside of Aiden and Clara looks in game. Nicole & Jackson Pearce look like they had been ripped straight from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood graphically and placed in a game with a next gen version of Aiden and that not even getting in to how other non-important characters look far worse.

The city is very hit and miss as well, I am not 100% certain what version of Chicago this is but it isn't remotely close to the one I have visited. Look I am not saying we need this 1:1 ratio of the city, but things should at least be close. Chicago is graphically inconsistent as well. It has some real beauty at times then the quality suddenly drops to muddy/blurry textures and bad aliasing. I am a bit concerned about the lighting and shadows in the game outside of direct sunlight as many of the lights at night do not cast shadows. That said I think the game looks astonishing at night when it's wet from rain and no visible light source around, but that in itself is the problem as they are covering up their faults by adding a layer of water to a darker landscape. Reflections in this game are rarely ever even used and in almost every event they are faked out to try to add to the realism, the issue I take with this is that the reflections are almost 100% of the time not even close to accurate. You might be standing on a rooftop looking at a window of an intersection when in reality it is a city skyline. I have found myself on street level staring in to a building that shows a road running right through the city and in to the building I am looking at, I then turn around and find river and a bridge.

While the game is set at 30fps it has some frame rate issues on the PlayStation 4 (900p) and the Xbox One (792p). The drops are not considerable enough to cause a panic but should be noted after the game was delayed to correct issues like this.

The game controls well and has some good mechanics with the hacking but lacks any real combat. Melee combat is really non-existent outside of the a quicktime style take down and shooting is a very basic version of the mechanics found in Splinter Cell: Blacklist. It just always feels so subpar in combat driving scenarios. That leads to another issue, for a game that tries to allow the player so many options to achieve their goals the game tends to fall back on one of two things, firefights and car chases. Hacking was suppose to be the thing that makes it stand out, but then it falls back to being GTA kill everyone or escape and the hacking is a minute tool used to change traffic lights or raise barricades / bridges. most of the time it's not even needed as you can get away with little no no effort (until much later in the game). While on driving, the driving in this game takes the poor controls of cars in every other open world game and decreases handling to make them that much more of a chore. Motorcycles are almost flawless so I highly recommend using those or the special stealth car unlocked in 'uplay'.

The multi-player is unique and feels genuine, but is basically a trolling simulator The main quest will take one to two days to complete and the game offers enough side missions to make any 80 hour players scream with joy. The issue with those side activities is that once again like most open world games, they are very repetitive and lack any real diversity. Overall I think Watch Dogs is a solid game that everyone owes it to themselves to try, I feel that it is a very strong rental but not worthy of purchase

I also love watching some random person running around looking for me when I'm sitting in a parked car right in front of them. "Hey, dummy...I can almost smell your musk from here!" It's hysterical to watch and I can feel their frustration from the other side of the country. Then, when they do discover you...it's on. I had one situation where I drove my car off a bridge, jumped out of the car in mid air and landed near a few docked boats. The guy chasing me followed my lead and a boat chase ensued that resulted in a hacked bridge and my getting shot to pieces. The multiplayer racing is also fun and totally unpredictable (but in a good way). The world is rediculously detailed and alive. I guess I wish there was a little more verticality, a few more things to hack, and shooting while driving, but those are small gripes for a game that never loses my attention. It's been a long time since I last itched to get home from work to play a game. When my wife starts getting pissed at how little attention I am giving her, that's when you know it's good. Expand

Much better than other players are letting on. Not entirely sure why people are so disappointed either. The game is fun, and whilst it's true the first act starts slowly, it certainly picks up pace and certain parts extremely memorable (e.g. the scene where you escape from your apartment). Also, the online integration is cutting edge - no one has done this before and it's amazing.

And the character development is **** I didn't feel any emotion when Clara died, or when Aiden's family had to move away from Chicago. Other than that, the game is perfect.

Now, one thing that REALLY pisses me off is the final mission. THEY **** BOTCHED THE FINAL MISSION! You just go around to three cliché hacking things and stand near them while hacking them. The twist is, you have the entire police force on your ass and if you shoot them, it ruins your reputation. So you have to stand near a stupid hacking thing while being chased by a seemingly infinite amount of helicopters and cars. This mission is retarded, and I am yet to complete it.

Watch Dogs is a fun open world experience. However, the repetitive chases and the formulaic gameplay tend to get tedious and boring after a while. As such, you might want to enjoy the different multiplayer experiences and take frequent breaks to just roam around the city.

It’s a bold first step on the new terrain for Ubisoft. The game is enjoyable, offers some interesting mechanics and lasts for long enough, but is bland as a whole. The characters lack personalities, the city could use more distinctness and the story is instantly forgettable. [07/2014, p.46]

Overall, it is almost without a doubt the best platformer that has popped up on the current generation of consoles and is a bedrock on which Ubisoft could build a brand to remember.
