No one get to choose how things end and no one is promised a respectful send off and that's just fine, because real life violence is awful and sad and leaves you feeling empty in a way this game converts just beautifully. Gameplay, esp combat and exploration, have improved so much and overall this game is just an absolute gem, 10 out of 10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Metacritic made it so hard to post this review. It kept crashing and saying error 500 and noticing the high reviews are being legitimately bombed to save this game it's just unreal . There is less bombing and more actual opinion about the game on the negative reviews scores than the overrated ones. I notice how the majority of the reviews for the game being amazing do not point out it's flaws. Whereas the negative reviewers give reasons and also explain why the game is goos. So unfortunately I have lost faith in the gaming industry and seen it's true colours even on metacritic. Regardless here's my review. Joel's character is weaker and his demeanor is smaller and not so interesting. The new character Abby also has little interesting points. In the first game Joel gave us meaning to be interested he lost someone close who was innocent. Ellie also is innocent and being chased and protected which is interesting. In this game Abbie's father was not innocent so no one cares if he dies. They made a clip of him regretting the surgery but it doesn't make you like him. There wasn't any scene that makes you like Abbie in a way you want to help her agenda knowing the first story. And the creators make you play this very lake character for hours. Sex scene was disgusting and unrealistic. Graphics great but I buy a game that is made for the story for the story and the story was over the top violent and sexual in a lesbian or gay way. Which is fine. But way too focussed on it to be enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They didn't run out of ideas, that's for sure. However, the ideas they ended up using are very telling of the questionable narrative talents of Halley Gross and the other two "writers" Neil hired as fillers.

The plot holes in both narration and character arcs made this sequel disconnected from what the fans loved and championed about the first. In a way I get what ND was going for because in the real world if this were to happen, it would likely end up the same way: merciless, unfair, and saddening; but the execution needed a little help from Troy, I believe. Maybe it wouldn't have been so jarring to fans had he voiced and mocapped the "sequence" to show more the regret Joel had for trusting a pack of strangers and giving his and Tommy's names outright. There's a part there were they could've zoomed in on him and showed this so as not to leave the fans saying 'what the hell happened to Joel? a hunter would never do this!'

Also, what happened to the black doctor we all shot in the first game?! Yes, the surgeon in the first game was black, which makes Jerry's character so bizarre and last-minute to even include.

Still giving it a rating of 6 because it tried with all the Mortal Kombat fatalities which was nice. And you can't deny those graphics. That next-gen rendering alone already gives this game half the score.

This form of media, as a game specifically, is excellent. It is clear that Naughty Dog has created a very real and detailed world. One can see that they worked very hard. The scenery in this game is beautiful. It is highly detailed, mechanically consistent, and a testament to how hard they worked.

For this reason alone, this game does not deserve a one star. It is a good game. Perhaps, based on this alone, it deserves at least 3-stars.

What is left to be judged is the story. If you're reading this, I highly recommend you play the game yourself no matter what you read here and form your own opinion. Many people are leaving bad reviews based on an early event that leaves feeling players betrayed or "shoved SJW ****

Naturally, players will be angry and leave bad reviews for this, but again this game does not deserve that. The circumstances that happen in-game are believable and real. The story is just as real as the first game. It is surprising, frustrating, depressing, fun, and so much more.

This is a must-play game. The bad reviews are undeserved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (In normal circumstances I’d give this game a 9 but the tons of bad reviews given by haters that are based off of spoilers made me give it a 10 to “compensate”)

Now about the game, as you may now every technical aspect of it is gorgeous and on point. Graphics, mechanics, expressions and so on. The story is dense and complex and although I’m a huge fan of the first game and the characters, Joel’s death felt necessary (yes, I agree that it should’ve been a little less “lazy” about how it happened, but still necessary). The second portion of the game, where you play with Abby made me care a lot about her, despite what she did, and that’s where the game is so genius. I felt horrible fighting against Ellie but I felt even worse fighting against Abby in the ending. I was in pain every time I cut her and by the end of the game I found myself crying just like Ellie cried after sparing abby’s life.

For me, the main flaw about the game is the over use of violent deaths. Yes, the universe of the is cruel and raw, but the excess of deaths made care less. The scene where Abby found Owen, the love of her, dead should’ve felt so much more emotional for me but it just felt like another one. Having said that, TLOU part 2 doesn’t seem right till you really finish the game. If you choose to play it, make sure to play it till the end cause each second of the story is fundamental to the experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have so many complaints I'm not sure where to start. For about 50% of the game, you are playing as Abby, this character who, I suppose, we are supposed to connect with & feel sorry for — ya know, after she brutally murders Joel. I understand the story was showing us that there are two sides to everything & that what Joel done in the first game also had consequences for others, but his murder comes after he & Tommy are so kind to help out strangers who are lurking in the mountains? Joel may have warmed up to Ellie & eventually softened, but at his core, he was wary of other people & never let his guard down. So for him to end up in the situation that eventually gets him murdered (30 mins into the game) felt hollow. Which makes his death all the harder to deal with. So, we play as Abby, & for the whole game, I only wanted Ellie to finish her off. Her backstory that was overstuffed with parallels to Ellie & Joel's beautiful journey from TLOU felt like the game was forcing nostalgia & sentimentality down my throat to make me, if not like her, at least empathise with her. I didn't. Some parts with Abby as our playable character were fun, I do enjoy stealth missions, but this was also achieved with Ellie as the primary playable character. I heard the game was roughly 25 hours long, so I had huge expectations for the twists & turns this story was set to take, but in actuality it's the same 12 hour story from 2 different perspectives, the second perspective being one I had no interest in learning about until around 18 total hours in. I ended up somewhat curious about how the Seraphites started & who their prophet was. & I never found out. Maybe I missed something, some optional dialogue or some writings, so I can't completely criticise this chunk of plot amounting to basically nothing. Once Yara & Lev entered the story, I could see the direction we were headed in; a similar one we played before with Joel & Ellie. When we set off as Abby & Lev, it was too blindingly obvious that ND were trying instill a similar warmth in us, one that was cultivated through an entire story of learning about the unlikely pair that is Joel & Ellie. Maybe I would've cared more about Abby & her irritating friends if I had spent a whole game learning about them & being a part of a forming bond, but I wasn't. We are thrown into the lives of these people who we have nothing but disdain for after they kill Joel & expected to end up chummy with them after seeing a few thinly written moments about their friendship circle being loyal to a fault. This critique of Abby's story isn't to say I found Ellie's segment of the game completely without fault, however. I think it's amazing that ND managed to write in a bunch of new characters on the "good" side & yet, somehow, make them all so unlikable. Dina & Jesse, yes, you were poorly written. I have a particular pet peeve with plots, & that's making people pregnant for the sake of making a story more interesting. This game does it not once, but twice! Pregnancy is an easy way to add some difficulty to a story set in the middle of a post-apocalyptic world — & that's exactly why it was added. This peeve of mine is a personal preference of course, however I do find it lazy to throw in pregnancy for some shock factor. I can't sit here & say it was all bad. I cried a lot. Plenty of moments had me in tears. The downside to that, though? They were all Joel related. The museum flashback, his death, his conversation with Ellie at the end, that unfiltered, raw emotion that made me fall in love with the first game was back, if only fleetingly, since Joel exists only in Ellie's memory now. Despite loving these few & far between moments we had with Joel, the writing felt odd. I can't exactly place my finger on it. Joel felt very different & a lot of the scenes felt they were trying too hard to remind us of moments from the first game. Ellie & Tommy quickly became my comfort in this game, as I stumbled around with these unfamiliar & unlikable people, I pined for moments with them. Even when you are playing as Abby & you must rush to cover as Tommy fires a sniper rifle at you, I felt happy in the comfort that someone familiar was nearby. TLDR; if you have a massive attachment to the first game, then this game is not for you. I rate it 3/10. A 3 b/c the game truly is beautiful. The scenery & surroundings are astonishing and it is all so carefully crafted to create a beautifully torn world. A 3 b/c I had some moments of fun, Ellie's chapter in the mall was a defining moment for me, I loved everything about it, sadly those moments did not come often. I spent the whole game waiting for that sweet relief at the end, I wanted Ellie to finish Abby off, since that is what the whole story was about. We had faced countless trials, for nothing. Yes, they had both ruined each other's lives & they were "even" but, I still don't care about Abby.

If you love TLOU, don't tarnish the memories you have w/ it. I wish I hadn't

I know that it's difficult to accept such a difficult story for characters that many of us fell in love with 7 years ago, but the world that ND created for TLoU is not a kind one. This game isn't about closure, satisfaction for the player, or teaching obvious lessons. It is a story about ramifications, revenge, and hate and the cataclysmic costs associated with them.

From a technical perspective, ND outdid themselves. The game is visually stunning, the mechanics have improved from the already great game play experience of the first game without deviating too much, and the variety of approaches the player can take to each encounter makes for an experience with many possibilities. The attention to detail is second to none.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part II is no masterpiece and a flawed game, but it’s still really good. So I finished playing The Last of Us pt. II and it took me a while. I’m here to talk about the good the bad and the fantastic. I am not one of those people who saw the leaks because I hate spoilers and I still don’t know what all the leaks were, but I can tell which one was one of the leaks. Now I’m going to talk about the stuff people don’t like because I want to get it out of the way. From what I can tell, a lot of people have a problem with the amount of diversity or that it’s “too woke”, if you are one of those people, I think that this complaint is invalid and that you should grow the hell up, it’s 2020 it’s, a different world now and you’re going to have to get used to how things are now. Also the the game isn’t as woke as people say it is because they’re more subtle about it and I really liked how it was handled in this game. Now another thing that a lot of people are against is the death of Joel and that it happens way too soon. When I first heard that this game was about Ellie’s quest for revenge I was a bit worried and in the trailers it seemed like Dina who is Ellie’s love interest is the one who gets killed, but instead it was Joel. I’ve heard a lot of people saying that Dina should have been the one to be killed and not Joel. As much as I loved the character of Joel in the first game and I was very upset when he died, I honestly thought that this made more sense because not only is it a good motive for Ellie, but also because you as the player and a fan of the first game, you feel motivated to get revenge on the people who did this. If it was Dina who got killed, I don’t think I would have been motivated at all, however I wish we spent more time with Joel before he was killed, but it’s really not that big of a deal. Before I get to the stuff I really loved about this game I have to talk about the stuff I didn’t like. When Ellie finally decides that her quest isn’t worth it and decides to go home, Abby, the person who killed Joel and Ellie’s main target tracks her down and finds Ellie because Ellie has been all over Seattle killing Abby’s friends, and it then cuts to a flashback to four years prior and we finally learn why she killed Joel, (I wont spoil this because it’s one of the best parts of the game) I almost liked this but then it cuts to the same time Ellie first arrives to Seattle but we see it from Abby’s POV. I understand what they were trying to do with this part, but I feel like they were asking too much for us to care, however there were some things that I liked about this part but I honestly think that they should have just showed us the flashback from four years prior and then cut back to the present. I think maybe it would have been better if this part was offered to us as a dlc like “Left Behind” or something, if it were like that then I would probably like this game way more

Since it’s a game by naughty dog, there was a lot of stuff that I really liked. First off the graphics are AMAZING and it’s probably the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a video game. I was really sold on Jackson as a survival colony and I really wish we could have seen more but it’s no big deal. I thought Dina served as a good love interest To Ellie and I really liked her character. The gameplay is a major upgrade from the first game. Another thing I really liked was the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie. I honestly liked Abby as a character and I really liked how she’s more than just a villain and I did like that they showed that her and Ellie aren’t that different from each other. Out of all the good things in this game, the best part was Ellie. When I heard that we were going to be playing as Ellie in this game I was pretty excited because I thought that she was a great character in the first one and I wish we could spent more time with her there but we’re mostly playing as Ellie in part II, and I really think that Ellie had a really good arc in this game and I know that a lot of people are calling the ending BS but I really liked it and it was really nice to see how much Ellie has evolved and the person she has become. The Last of Us part II isn’t a masterpiece it has some things that rub me the wrong way and I really didn’t want a sequel to The Last of Us, but I’m glad it’s here because I had good time playing this game.

Hated playing as Abby, didn’t enjoy one second of it, didn’t care about her and it felt as a side quest the whole time, just helping unknown kids which I also didn’t care about. Bad ending, not conclusive enough, made it feel like everything I did and felt was for nothing. And Joel’s death was too early and badly done, didn’t like not knowing why they had killed him, knew he was going to go but it should’ve been a better way. Other than that, great gameplay, graphics and music. Big mistake Neil, BIG MISTAKE... Wish I had only played the first one, masterpiece 10/10. Truly sad at this moment. A lot of anger... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was very excited to get this game after being a fan of the first one for years! I found the music and the visuals good although I feel not much has improved on the gameplay, which I felt could’ve been smoother. This game was more focused on story however. I’m usually quite lenient with this part because, hey, gamers want to have good gameplay. Since it was more story oriented, here it goes. First things first, the characters. The psychologies of characters are uncharacteristic to what they were in the first game and that made the dynamic cold and less engaging. The political view has narrowed down to the mentality of the 'popular' few and is therefore less universal and diverse. I think too many directors have watched The Walking Dead and maybe think that, that’s how peoples’s minds ought to work. You can’t help but feel that this tendency for the arthouse blues and constant sighed deliveries are the directors attempt at adding enigmatic depth when there really is none. It’s POST-APOCOLYPSE! Am I supposed to believe that Ellie would give up a steak sandwich to make an LGBT point or that there would be a droid-filled she-hulk with a gym pass? Which leads me to my next point. Glaring feminism and LGBT references do nothing for those movements. They just annoy fans who enjoy good stories. All that did was make characters colder and less relatable. Who chose Abby to be one of the protagonists??? I really had to grit my teeth to finish the second half of the game. The character sucks. Her self destructiveness, egoism, constant 'Are you ok? Are you ok?', most likely thrown in to endear her to the audience. POP PSYCHOLOGY. Read a Dostoyevsky book to see how real psychologists write, reason and discover pathological tendencies. Also Ellie’s constant attacks on Joel just seemed petty, egotistical and lacking in any sort of values. More relevant in the 'rich' western world than in the place she was inhabiting. Her warmth, loyalty and cheekiness from the first game were swallowed up by a much more base instinct and so she became less profound for me. I think in general this was another popular franchise that was derailed by a wave of these so called “reformers”. The problem for me is that they seem like petty tantrums that should be left at an appropriate age. If you want to succeed further start with a relatable and resonating storyline. Good ones tend to penetrate cultural differences. For example: I've recently watched a film called 'The City of God'. Great film. Now I'm not a little Brazilian kid, but I could resonate with feelings like power, jealousy, love, lust... The characters don't have to be white, straight or male. It’s a question of depth. Most reviewers quite frankly discredited themselves by telling would be buyers to ignore the tens of thousands of frustrated fans. We're not cattle to use for a quick financial gain. The insolence to then write articles to explain why the unhappy gamers are wrong is quite frankly outrageous. In my opinion there is nothing to attach to in this story and a mark of a good story is usually memorable characters. Are these though? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first game. So much so that my daughter's name is Ellie. The best parts of that game were easily the characters. The story itself is relatively simple, but is made so beautiful with how each event is explored between Joel, Ellie, and everyone else involved. The gameplay was fine. I liked it more than Uncharted because I had grown tired of climbing building after building in videogames. The visuals have become dated, but the cinematic aspects of the game make it a masterpiece in my eyes. The sequel on the other hand... is not.

The Last of Us 2 improved in many ways from it's predecessor. The gameplay is rock solid - building on the foundations of the first whilst not being an over-complicated mess. Visuals are top-notch for the PS4. The setting & cinematics bring you in like no other narrative driven game. But the major issues lie with the story and the characters. Almost a 180 from the original.

I don't agree that characters make decisions that don't line up with what was established in the first game. The stakes have changed and I feel like they handled the situations as we can expect. I think the story has very solid plot points that would've been much better if told in a different order. Meeting Abby and then watching her immediately kill Joel was gut-wrenching. And it could've been great storytelling, if they never tried to make us care for her character - but they spend half the game trying to make you like her. While playing as Abby I found myself purposely dying out of spite for her character. I believe a better approach would've been to start the game off as Abby with her father (not dissimilar to Kingdom Hearts II's opening) so that we can better understand this characters actions. Also, it would've been better for Tommy/Dina dying in the opening with Joel & Ellie out for revenge, and later Joel dying in the theater.

Overall I like the story they wrote, but a little more time in the writer's room would've done this game wonders.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me begin this review by saying yes, I understand parts of the story can be controversial to others and can be disappointing with the choices in which naughty dog decided to go with TLOU part 2. But let me say that even with the ideal story changes, this game was one of the greatest PlayStation exclusive games that ive played since the original TLOU.
Let me start by saying that the story was shocking and compelling, and for me at times very questionable. Specifically with playing as the character Abby, for with not understanding who she is or what he purpose compromises of, it throws a curve in our feelings towards what the idea of the story will be like. But with this addition of characters, it begins to show not just one side, but both sides of the story. Since this game half way will cut to Abbys beginning of the story when Ellie enters Seattle. It shows the struggle of both these characters attempt to survive through the deserted streets of Washington Seattle, in which two groups are at war over control of seattle, being the Washington Liberation Front known as the wolves , and the seraphites known as the scars. One group is a broken down branch of fireflies that have taken a new name for themselves, being more militarized with weaponry, vehicles, and Dogs. While the other is a cult like villagers that believe in the beliefs of Their prophets, and the ways of the new world and removing the old world, they take advantage of the environment, using guns and mainly bows and arrows. Ellie begins a quest to hunt down Abby due to her actions in the beginning of the game. Throughout this story, you will watch as drastic actions are taken in order to survive in which will change the characters forever.
For game play, the gun play, stealth, and crafting have been taken to a whole new level with crafting, being an easier and better way to advance your weaponry with you no longer needing to craft holsters but instead finding them within search areas that can lead you to finding guns and training manuals. Manuals are used in this game as a form of learning new skill branches in which could help you craft items more efficiently, enhance your stealth abilities, upgrade your weapon sway and so on. upgrading weaponry now visually shows on weaponry in which now finding parts to upgrade are mainly focused towards only needing to upgrade weapons. Crafting items has been taken to a whole new level with being able to create new items that can help you efficiently in the battlefield against both the infected and human enemies, advancing melee weapons now work in a more efficient way by removing shiv doors in which now gives you a chance to upgrade your weapons more often since hand to hand combat has become a more implemented part of combat. With the removal of shiv doors, this now allows players to be able to enter loot rooms without the use of shivs, but instead will have to find a hidden way into the room. In my opinion I think this is a better addition to the game since while shivs are still an existing tool in this game, are now more used to help with quick stealth kills and to get out of grabs by infected enemies.
Within the beginning levels of this game, it allows you to explore areas within the downtown seattle area in order to find Ellies beginning items. in which you are able to open a map and find hidden areas that contain loot within question mark areas on your map, in which you will be able to find hits that can lead you to new areas. This is the only time that TLOU uses an open map system, this part can be related to what Metro Exodus does with its maps, while it may be not exactly open world, it does use the same idea of searching areas to find tools and and equipment to help you in your adventure.
Combat in TLOU is fully insane, gun fights feel a lot more intense and smooth with cross hairs staying the same as the first game. Body damage to enemies has become more visible with head shots now showing a lot more damage, such as holes in heads and blown off jaws. hand to hand combat becomes violent when items are thrown in the mix, especially since with there being more melee weapons to pick up, it also allows you to upgrade every melee weapon you find.
In the end, I highly think that while many dislike this game due to its story and for some reason its ideal of lesbians being apart of a game being a problem, the game on its own is phenomenal, its game play gets fully overlooked and frankly, if you're someone who doesn't finish a game and writes a review about the game being bad, your'e not just ignorant, but your'e also making yourself look stupid. Finish something before you judge it, because it can contain a lot of potential ideas for future games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No amount of lovely graphics, amazing work by the actors, sound design, and user interface improvements can change the fact that many things in this game just do NOT make any sort of sense. (I cannot be appeased by the addition of a dodge and jump mechanic when you brutally murder one of my favorite characters of all time).

The Last of Us Part II attempted to try and coerce the narrative that Joel's death triggered an intense feeling of vengeance in Ellie and that urge for vengeance resulted in her losing everything and winding up alone (According to her; one of her worst fears).

Why does the narrative of this game codemn Ellie for wanting to avenge her Father-figure and reward Abby for gaining revenge on her father? Surely, if the main theme of this game is about condemning hate and violence, then why is it that Abby, a character we have literally almost zero history with rewarded with killing Joel and avenging her Father, while Ellie, who has suffered the loss of many friends and the guilt of survival because of her immunity punished for wanting to avenge the only person who was like Father to her?

    What. Was. The. Point?

It is quite clear that the intent was to make it appear that Ellie loses herself to her vengeance. In many aritcles about the game, the phrase; When You Seek Revenge, Dig Two Graves has been used, but I am quite curious as to why Ellie needed to learn this lesson and Abby was able to succeed in this regard. Why should I care about Abby? They do not even give me time to like her before she callously tortures and kills Joel (effectively robbing another daughter of her father).

This could theoretically work, but it would take much more gameplay with Abby prior to killing Joel then Naughty Dog decided to do. Killing Joel within the first two hours of an almost thirty hour game is as illogical as some of the characterization and plotlines shown throughout this work. Perhaps it is not the best show, but given the character limit and for the sake of coherency, I wanted to make it rather brief and easy to follow.

-Abby's father, Jerry Anderson, was going to kill a 14 year old girl on the off chance that there could have been a vaccine made. There was no quarantee this would work and if it did, how well would a vaccine be able to be made and circulate throughout the world given its current state 20 years after the initial infection and fall of civilization? Who is to say it would not be hoarded by the powerful and used as leverage.

And was Ellie even aware that this would result in her death? I feel that's an important factor to make known to a person, especially as a doctor. Most of Ellie's dialogue going towards St. Mary's hospital indicates that she believes she will survive the procedure. Neither Marlene, Joel, or the Doctor allowed Ellie her choice. But we know why Joel did it. He couldn't lose another daughter.

-How in the world did Abby and her group manage to track down Joel to Wyoming and how did they find out a man named Joel killed her father? Did she brutally torture and kill every poor schlub named Joel until she managed to stumble on the right one because Neil Druckmann decried it so?

-How did Abby and her group travel from Seattle, Washington to Jackson, Wyoming and not suffer any injuries or deaths in their group to and from their destination? In the previous game, Joel and Ellie just barely made it to Salt Lake City and they both nearly died multiple times, as well as lost Tess, Henry, and Sam during the whole trip.

-Why the hell would Joel and Tommy (two seasoned survivors trust Abby and her group)? Why give them the location of their settlement? Joel has been established as ruthless and cynical. Yes, it's been four years since the first game, but Joel spent 20 years (five times as long) as doing everythig he could to survive and has been shown to be resourceful and strong.

-"As a hardened survivalist, Joel displays terrifying intensity, strength, cunning, and fierce fist-fighting prowess; he can perform fatal chokeholds, string combinations of hard punches, and other miscellaneous attacks with little fatigue or hesitance, and he has become adept to the point where he can out-brawl and overwhelm opponents half his age quite quickly. " The Last of Us Wiki. Apparently, the writers forgot this in their haste to put the main character of the previous game down like a dog and shove Abby at us like a replacer.

I don't like Abby. Nothing will make me like Abby.

As far as I'm concerned, the only Last of Us game is the first installment and the Left Behind DLC. Naughty Dog, you really screwed the pooch on this one.
