After just two hours there is no reason left to be invested anymore. Basic revenge plots are basic, and The Last Of Us should be held to a higher standard than that. This plot is one drawn out trope. There is no reason to care what happens after the destruction of the powerful and emotional relationship crafted in the original. After that we know there will be no answers to the questions fans have had for over half a decade. Every moment after that is an exercise in masochism; nothing left but going through the motions until the game gives you are reason to care again, which it never does. Not even at the end, when it has a chance to give some kind of satisfaction it chooses to keep depriving the player of any sort of pleasure.

Why would a fan want to play a game that makes a point to not be rewarding? They do not.

The last of us 2 is so boring and uninteresting, they killed off Joel in the first 2 hours of the game in the worst possible way, instead of given his character a satisfying conclusion like Arthur Morgan. The game has nothing new, the characters sucked including Ellie and the end is one of the worst if not the worst in Gaming.

It’s obvious the amount pain stakingly long hours and hard work were put into this, and it heartbreaking to see it all undone by the shear disrespect shown to the characters we all grew to love. I’m fully aware it is not our story to write, but while playing through the game I couldn’t help but feel maybe they didn’t realize what made The Last of Us so special to us in the first place. It seems instead of leaning into the heart and soul of our established characters, “subverting expectations” was the main focus. We weren’t asking for a tame story line filled with roses. We’re well aware things can go terribly wrong in this world. We simply wanted to experience a story that honored the characters. I truly appreciate all of the work that went into making the gameplay so excellent, and I was crushing not to be able to enjoy it to its fullest. I won’t go into story details out of respect and I’ll sum it up quickly. From someone who truly loved these characters, I was heartbroken by not only what it was, but what it showed it could have been. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to enjoy this game given I was a huge fan of the first one however, after 7 years it seems naughtydog has lost their touch.

While Joel’s death was necessary it wasn’t what anyone who played part 1 would consider reasonable however I am willing to accept that as it’s a great driving force for Ellie and Tommy.

My issues come when you are first forced to switch to play as Abby, a character who we instantly hate and actively root against. Her backstory while tragic isn’t close to enough to make up for what she’s done as I find it hard to feel pity for someone who’s dad was killed while cutting open a child’s head without telling the child (Ellie) or her by then surrogate father Joel who brought her across the country. So when she finds him dead I don’t feel much pity.

I found myself rushing through abbys sections as I just wasn’t invested in her and found the children she helped to be a ham-fisted attempt to give her some depth as it was so out of character that it completely threw me off.

I found that most sections became highly repetitive outside of the flashbacks, it seemed like a copy paste and re-skin most levels.

Finally to the ending, to see Ellie not only cut Abby down but also nearly kill her only to change her mind because of an image of Joel she sees as she drowns Abby was highly unfulfilling, there was no real reason Ellie would’ve stopped it’s not like Joel would’ve stopped if it was Ellie who’d been killed and Ellie showed no signs of having mercy until that last 5 minute section.

Overall I found the gameplay to be alright but not improved enough on the first game to be worth the 7 year wait, the story made little sense and seemed most contrived and the level design seemed lazy after a couple hours gameplay as it was just more of the same and ended with so many unfulfilled opportunities and a cliffhanger which suggests Ellie either goes to Jackson and live a good life with Dina or the more likely she is now a depressed loner wandering the wasteland.

This is just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own I hope you guys enjoyed the game!

An insult to our beloved Joel and TLOU franchise. If you want a feeling of what it is like, just think about the last season of GOT, which never should have been shot; thus this game should never have been made. As a legend once cried: My dissappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined!

GRAPHICS, it's a triple A game in 2020 of course it's looks beautiful.
LEVEL DESIGN, the world is designed well, it allows a lot of exploration and it is always rewarded by getting new weapons, equipment or resources.
SOUND, the sound is amazing. Shooting, punching explosions and other stuff sound really good.
DIFFICULTY, the difficulty customisation is perfect, you are able to adjust the main characters, the enemies, the environment, resources and so on.
FLASHBACKS, those were good and I feel the game should just start with them and the story in them was actually well written and told.

    BAD:
GAMEPLAY: it's just the same as 7 years ago, no improvements but also hasn't got worse, but yeah I think some new features would have helped the gameplay. It becomes tedious after 10-15 hours.
LENGTH: the game is way too long, 25-30 hours for this story is ridiculous, 15-20 hours would have been enough.
ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS: yeah most of the things in there are useful options that can help people, however there are option that make no sense and seem to be put in for the journalists that review the game. There is an option that makes you invisible when prone, another option lets you stay under water without drowning, you can turn weapon sway off which makes certain upgrades useless and makes you feel like you are playing a trained soldier rather than a teenage girl.
BUGS, for a triple A game, there are so many bugs, I had to reload entire levels or restart the game on several occasion because the game was soft locked and I couldn't go on because a NPC didn't move to a certain spot.

    WARNING SPOILERS
STORY, the story is complete trash. I don't know who the people are that believe this story is well written or well-told.
CHARACTERS: The characters are introduced by name, like Jesse, Dina and so on, there is often no background to them, no story on how they met or how they ended up where they are. Every character that dies in this game dies after couple of scenes and isn't mentioned anymore people like JESSE and MANNY who are obviously important to the story, they die right in front of Ellie and Abby and they aren't mentioned after all, not a single word. Character development is awful, everybody but YARA and LEV are replaceable and unlikeable. YARA and LEV's story is nice and has some emotional and deep scene throughout their missions, especially the island scenes.
STORY ORDER, the order how the story is told feels backwards, Ellie kills these people like Danny, Jordan, Nora or whatever the hospital girl is called, then 7-10 hours later they are introduced when the player takes control over Abby. When people found out Danny is dead, they were mad and sad, as player I didn't care I knew nothing about that guy there was no connection. The order would be a lot better if the player would play Abby and Ellie each day, starting with Abby then Ellie "chasing" after her, so with Abby's missions we would get to know the "villains" we kill playing Ellie, but yeah none of this happens. Killing any of Abby's friends felt like killing any other enemy in the game, just another faceless character.
PURPOSE, the whole story is about revenge constantly showing the player revenge is bad, it is a cheap way of story making and it showed in the writing.
I have nothing against Joel being killed I feel it had to happen his actions needed consequences but it was badly done as Joel had 3 scenes before being killed. I have nothing against Naughty Dog's approach of making female lesbian characters and Abby's design, I see the media using this a reason why people don't like this game but it isn't.
The reason why people don't like this game is because it isn't made for gamers but for the journalist and reviewers. Accessibility options killing off the entire gameplay and the whole LGBT thing they are trying to do just shows me they are trying to please "video game" journalists.

In the end the game itself wasn't terrible as many people want to make it sound but it was certainly wasn't good either.

This a heart wrenching sequel that is vehemently set on destroying just about everything that people loved with the first game. What was initially a promising start, quickly devolves into a very grim and nihilistic narrative that is propped up by not only convenient plot devices, but driven by unrealistic actions from previously well established characters.

The ending is probably one of the most anti-climactic and disappointing aspects of this entry, with no payoffs for the player for having to trudge through what is Nietzsche's wet dream, leaving behind what is a needlessly ambiguous and unfulfilling finale which completely invalidates almost everything had endured up until that point.

Visually, the game is one of the best on the market, with gritty visuals that help bring the cold and desolate world of this series the life, and for this the game deserves its due credit. From a gameplay perspective, this entry has stayed largely static. There was nothing intrinsically wrong with the first game's combat, but it was nothing special and a bit bland though not bad. The sequel offers more of the same but with a few new additions to revamp the affair. It does still fulfil its role however as the series isn't renowned for any spectacular gameplay. The animations are fluid, the scavenging and crafting aspects are serviceable though the AI has still remained rather horrid despite whichever difficulty you set.

Though, despite the narrative being severely compromised, it would be rather disingenuous to not acknowledge the fact that it's functional while gorgeous, and therefore not deserving of a completely horrible score, however this is a series that was previously lauded for its fantastic storytelling. It has failed to reach those heights again with its janky pacing, with an over reliance of intermittent flashbacks and expositional preaching through dialogue more aimed at the player themselves than between the characters.

I would not recommend purchasing this game at all. If you're truly curious, then it would be prudent to hold out for a sale or a used copy. Otherwise, please; just satiate your curiosity of the game's narrative through playthroughs found online as the only thing worse than having to experience this entry as a die hard fan, is the stinging feeling of having wasted money on it.

It's like the makers of this game hates you and the world and want you to end up hating the world as much as they do and want to destroy every shred of legacy the first game had and every shred of fun you'd have. I'd give this game a negative score if I could.

...And causes South Koreans to cut up the game disc. Like I should have done.

Everything you suspected was true: the leaks, the agenda pushing, the cruel crunch culture at Naughty Dog (ND), the abuse of Youtubers regarding DMCA claims by MUSO, Sony and ND.
Oddly, all this goes into the mix to make a game that looks as good as the story is awful.
Bland gameplay, lack of environmental puzzles, horrid characters, plot holes, repetitive gunplay combined with stealth and Abby-Shaped Meat Monsters are the order of the day here, and, presiding over all of this is the ravaged corpse of what was established in the first game. All the characters you loved, vandalised.

A clear lesson that people do not want to be preached to, or to have their games made by idiots who listen to misandristic witches.

It's funny though, how a game that focuses on looks above everything else, was made by a group of so-called feminists. You'd think they would know better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Warning spoilers**** The mechanics and beauty of this game is wonderful. After over 21 hours of gameplay, I have to say they did a good job on making the game engaging and fun, However, the story is lackluster at best. Look, I don't care about the morality of the characters. It doesn't matter if you have to see Ellie and Joel as good people or not. We are attached to them, and we literally see Ellie grow up in front of our eyes. How they handled her story and fate was a disgrace. It felt like I was teased for 21 hours and I didn't orgasm. Nothing about the ending was satisfying. Everything that happens to Ellie just complies together to one **** sandwich after the other. the revenge plotline is as old as time. I think the best game that did the revenge killing was the god of war 3. This is about a character who finds and kills his father, and when you kill his father you get to beat the hell out of him however long you want to. Then the game ends, and the main character has a ****ty life, due to his poor choices. the ending for last of us 2, nothing like that. There is no satisfaction, nothing. It's not only just sad, but it felt meaningless. I still hate Abby, no matter how much they try to humanize her. It's like trying to explain the actions of Micha in red dead or the actions of fountain from Bioshock. Like yes, everyone is the hero in their own story. But goddammit Ellie is our hero, Shes the one we are rooting for. she should have died on that beach with Abby. Making her live a bleak life with everyone she loves dead or hating her is just cruel. I'm disappointed in this game. Expand

Personally I do not understand the reviews on both sides, certainly the game is beautiful and that is undeniable, the gameplay has not changed much but it was already good in the previous opus. The music is perfect one of the best sond tracks I've ever listened to and I thank Santaolalla for that.

But all that brings us to the scenario, the story is the heart of the game, for me will never be as good as the first onebut it certainly does not deserve all that hate.

Naughty dog took a very risky direction by killing Joel from the start of the game, I think it was a very bad idea knowing the community's love for this character.
I'm not saying it was a bad idea to kill Joel, I'm just saying it could have been done better.

And it was also I think a bad idea to base all the marketing on an adventure of Joel and Ellie when in the game certain passages of the trailers have certain swichted ofcharacter and changed models

    (not cool NDl.)

So no, the game does not deserve 0/10 and no it does not deserve to be called a masterpiece

    I think 5 / 10 is an appropriate rating.

I got about an hour in as well and could no longer play it.

I play games to escape the nonsense of daily life, because I'm subjected to it everywhere I go. Way to ruin a potentially excellent game.

I probably, like many, can not understand the very moment when the game studios began to bend under the minority. They began to follow their lead, afraid of their criticism. It would be worth ignoring them, so that they do not begin to understand that their screams find a response.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing the game and watching others play it, I must say that this game is probably the biggest letdown in gaming for me personally. This game was actually so bad to me that I created an account to express my displeasure.

Admittedly, the game does have some good aspects to it, good graphics, VA, music, and the gameplay is good if you enjoyed the first TLOU gameplay. However, if you found the gameplay of the first game to be mediocre or bad, do not expect anything new from this game, most of the changes are purely cosmetic.

    The problems:
Before I get into the atrocious story, I want to first talk about some of the glitches that occur in the game that many people seem to overlook. Kill/execution animations do not play out correctly (models would seemingly disappear), camera problems during interactions, and not being able to fire my gun during scripted segments of the game. Just to name a few.

This game also has many "walking simulator" areas, just walking without end and nothing really happening. It starts to take away from the story and bore the player.

I also wanted to discuss the discrepancy in the trailers compared to the game. In the trailer, you will see Joel with a big beard and looking much older than he does in-game, this is because they wanted to make it look like he has a bigger role in the game. Most of the scenes that feature Joel in the trailer are flashbacks in the game and looks younger in-game. There is also one scene in the trailer where Joel catches up with Ellie, in the game, it's a completely different person. Some pretty shady stuff if you ask me.

The story is the biggest problem of this game. In TLOU 1, the story was the focal point of the game, the created bond between Joel and Ellie to form a father-daughter relationship. Part 2 throws that everything that TLOU 1 created for shock value (killing Joel), to make way for a character named Abby. If you liked the first game for its story at all you will probably not like her as she is Joel's killer. You are then forced to play as her for about roughly 60% of the game (25 hours long by the way) in the game's attempt to make you sympathize with her. If you are someone like me who wanted her dead, that also sucks for you because Ellie's revenge campaign against Abby ends in sparing her life while losing two fingers in the process.

This game has a basic revenge story that uses Joel's death to start the entire story tries to sell the "revenge is a vicious cycle" trope and how people should try and seek forgiveness in others regardless of what they have done. This would be slightly better if Abby was in any way likeable but still, it is a weak plotline.

This bad story also has more problems given bad character development, plot holes, and holes in the decision making of a character.

    A few examples:
    - Joel and Tommy who have survived at least 3 decades follow random strangers into a trap after saving Abby.
    - Ellie, in a cutthroat post-apocalyptic world, spares Abby after killing countless amounts of people including some of her own men. Ellie will even execute Abby in the aquarium fight if you mess up but has a change of heart at the end?
    - Dina, who was Ellie's partner for a while, abandons Ellie at the end of the game for no apparent reason.
    - Tommy suffers a gunshot to the head and survives despite being in the middle of nowhere with little medical treatment (granted, I am ok with this happening, but still is a plot hole nonetheless).
    - A member of an opposing faction saves Abby from certain death.
    - They give Abby many superficial opportunities to look like a good person.

I am aware that TLOU 1 had plot holes as well, but there were fewer instances and it did not affect character development.

What the developers do not realize is that yes, there are two sides to every coin, but many people have already picked their side. You can't just have Abby kill Joel and think that she will be redeemed by showing off all the good stuff she has done.

The worst part about this whole thing is that I personally didn't think that The Last of Us needed a sequel, and this game trying to justify its existence makes it that much worse.

In my honest opinion, I think this game is a 4-5/10, but the people controlling Metacritic are fixing the reviews so I'm making this a 0/10.

Please do not buy this game, it will show developers that they can get away with **** writing and little to no improvements to a game just because its predecessor was a masterpiece.

Really disappointing! I agree that games need more diversity in them. But TLOU 2 just slaps you in the face with it, the story itself is just really bad and makes no sense.

Best thing about it's predecessor was when you finished the game and the credits rolled you knew you would be playing it again in the future. I don't feel I will be playing this game again.

Died by the hands of Abby which we play with and trying to understand her, but you can't love a character that killed the most favorite character. At the end Abby is left with a place to go to and a friend, and Ellie is left with absolutely NOTHING. The fact that she turned out to be a better person than Abby by letting her live is not enough. This just shows how much influence Halley has had on Neil and how much she doesn't know a thing about Joel. Only youtubers and famous people are rating it high, and I think that shows something...I tried so hard to like the story and love the ending but every time I think of Joel it's like a part of me died. I beat the game. What i have to say is that this is a game that can be only appreciated and fully understood if you play it open-minded. The game does not have morals and concepts of what is right or wrong, on what is bad or good. It's actually really hard trying to explain it and you can only feel by playing it, seriously.

The game does not have morals and concepts of what is right or wrong, on what is bad or good. It's actually really hard trying to explain it and you can only feel by playing it, seriously.
    .
About SJW stuff people are saying, i really didn't notice anything, really. Me and ALL of my friends who played it thought everything to be perfectly fit within its universe and anything felt forced at all. Ellie and Dina relationship felt so natural as her with Riley, and the polemical Mysterious Woman is not a transsexual (not even Gay) like everybody is saying and her ripped body is actually explained within its context. Seriously, i really don't know how can people find this to be "SJW festival" when the entire game is all about violence and killing people, literally. There's not ONE SINGLE line of dialog or face expressions where female characters feel superior or more empowered than male in this game or the contrary, seriously. Not one single thing. The characters kills black men, black women, white women, white men, they kills everybody, It's equally balanced and i can't understand why people are so upset about this.

But why you have to play it open-minded then? Well, as i said, there are no right or wrong morals here. *No one is a hero and this is a hard and sad world to live in for EVERYONE* (this phrase is very important). Well, basically the game tries to make you understand every side of the story. Characters motivations, Why they did what they did, Their human side, Their empathy capacity on bad/good people and thats it. So people got a misconception of the game thinking this would be a lovely revenge story (yeah, lovely revenge) about Right beating Wrong in a heroic and epic way like every other single game in the market, and they got their mind closed on it. So when they realized what the game is about - a harshly violent, MOSTLY SAD / DEPRESSIVE story with no morals of right and wrong, bad or good where NOBODY is safe and no one is a hero - Oooooooooh boy, you can understand the hate, seriously, if you're reading this and you bad-rated the game because of its story, i can understand you. The game will not satisfy everyone.

If you identified more of yourself within the love story from the first game and want to play Part II, don't. Stay in the first game. If you do it, you MUST play tihs willing to understand every side of the coin here and have a minimum ammount of empathy for everyone, including people you *think* are the bad ones. hence the open-minded thing i'm talking about.

I give it a 8 because i feel like there could be more of it, you know? They could push everything much harder to cause more impact, because i sadly didn't feel much empathy about its characters as i wanted to. I cried in the end, yeah. But not because of the depressive ending or anything, but because i wasn't able to feel it, and i know the potential is there even though i can't find it. But i'm willing to try it again.

The game is a technical marvel and shines in every aspect in the visual department, framerate is solid and the visuals are varied, vibrant and simply bursting with detail. Gameplay is tense with every enemy feeling like a genuine threat and combat and customisation is deep and engaging. Exploration is deeply encouraged and rewarded in spades making combing every nook and cranny of each new area feel like an effort worth the time to dedicate to it. The voice acting as well, as you would expect, is top notch with the cast bringing their alls to the roles and it truly shows.

Where the game suffers tremendously, is with the story, writing and pacing. The Last of Us 2 is bogged down by it's cliché and poorly written revenge plot with baffling decisions littered all over the 25 hour campaign, some dreadful dialogue and terrible story structure. The story feels awfully rushed and carries almost no weight in comparison to it's predecessor. The cast of characters this time around are incredibly bland, generic and forgotten the moment they exit the screen or are killed off and all of the emotional tension from the first game we have come to love, is disregarded in favour of this bland storyline about the cycle of revenge and the need to remind you every step of the way that violence is not the solution. It truly feels like a child's interpretation of what violence looks like. Furthermore the depth and charm has been all but stripped away from Ellie and the game as whole, and we're left with an unpleasant, miserable husk that made me half wonder if this was the same lass we travelled across the country with in the first game. The writing does improve noticeable in specific sections of the game, and they are noticeable, but that's spoiler territory I'm not going to dive into.

Overall, despite enjoying my time with the game and seeing that it excels in the gameplay, visuals and technical departments, it's bland and forgettable cast coupled with a horribly written, poorly structured plot make the Last of Us Part 2 one of the most conflicting titles I have played in a very long time.

This isn’t a 0 because the game itself is a terrible game (though it is terrible in many ways). If it was just bad then it would at least merit a 2 or 3 purely on its technical achievements and sound design. Its a 0 because of how disrespectful it is to the masterpiece that came before it, and it is also so spiteful to the audience, as if it’s trying to give fans a crash course on how to ruing a legacy. I don’t have to go into detail about what exactly is wrong with this game, that would just be another drop in the ocean of people on the internet explaining this unholy mess. I’m writing this for every normal person considering of spending their hard earned money on this: don’t. Go on YouTube and watch the thousands of videos explaining why this game fails as a whole. The lesson is flat and childish. The game tortures you with its characters and payoffs. It actively tries to get you to stop playing. I don’t even care enough to elaborate , I want to stop talking about this. Off the top of my head I can give you 20 better ways the story could have gone. At the end of the day, this game makes you sad not because of the story, but because you know that the future of this franchise we all hold so dear to our hearts is irrevocably changed for the worse. TL;DR: go play metro exodus or horizon zero dawn. I wish I was someone who read a review like this before I spent money on this.
